Happy new Year and welcome to the first issue of 2012.
This month we’ve got a packed magazine for you. We take a sneak preview on page 54 of one of the first major shows to take place this year, interiors UK at the neC in January promises to be as exciting as ever.
We’ve asked a few of the designers we’ve had the pleasure of working with during 2011 to give us their highlights from the year; Lee Broom had an exciting and busy 2011 which culminated in him winning the ‘Designer of the Year’ award 2011 at the British Design Awards; a particular highlight for Howard sullivan was the Dazed and Confused exhibition taking place at somerset House in London; and the team from glasgow-based graven images reflect on their many highpoints of 2011.
Mark Ludmon takes a look at the world of interior lighting – this is always a favourite feature topic for me because i love beautiful lights. Apart from the obvious practical purpose they serve, they truly have become stunning works of art. Turn to page 31 to read about the latest trends.
Leading designer Dan Hopwood tells us about his week, reflecting on the way he once imagined his life as a designer would be when he started out in interior designer 18 years ago… it’s slightly different to what he thought! Turn to page 11 to read about what he gets up to.
We hope that 2012 has got off to a good start for you. Don’t forget to keep your contributions coming in.

A Week in the Life of… Dan Hopwood Eighteen years ago, when leading architect and designer Dan Hopwood started his own interior design studio, he decreed that work should start at 10am. He had ideas of sipping lattes in an elegant cafe, scooter parked close by, whilst idly sketching ideas for the latest fabulous project… Think on Dan!
i limp home for 8am and start work by calling the various builders who are working on my projects. They are usually tucking into bacon butties by then and so an ideal time to catch up on progress.
i am lucky. My office is run efficiently with a small but very able team. Marc has been around for six years and oversees the daily running of each project and keeps control of budgets. Kristina is young, but highly qualified and very talented. she will one day be a great designer and i enjoy watching her grow in knowledge each day. Carole has looked after my books since the day i started the company and i must admit she can be quite scary, i’m glad she is on our side.
Monday mornings in my office, like in many others, should be about planning the week ahead but frankly after catching up on each others’ weekend of fun, we face the barrage of calls and emails from clients who have had time to think over their projects. The afternoon is usually packed with finishing the mountain of paperwork that has accumulated over the week before. Who’d believe a designer’s life could have so much paper work?
still at home, i plan my day and check emails. i also have a chance for a creative moment, time to think about what might be. When i arrive in the studio there is little time to consider the broad picture. With the team poised ready, i already need to know the direction in which we are going.
if you put together a party of interior designers, the first question asked is: “Are you busy?” Our working lives are a bit like actors and, like them, when busy, we really are busy. Time has to be well planned, especially as you need to be calm and in control. That’s our theme.
Before i know it, it’s time for lunch with a new client who is beyond excitement about her first marital home. And no ordinary home it is, being in Chelsea and once belonging to Oscar Wilde. Trying to daintily balance sushi on chop sticks i take her through the logistics of carrying out t
Monday now in 2011, each day starts with a sprint down Harley street, half asleep, to the gym for an intense 20 minute workout, where work is the last thing on my mind.

The Chelsea suite
in.His LiFe : 13 s the design. Although much of our conversation covers the details of her wedding dress, she does run a top hedge fund and is german; there is no doubt i have to perform well. On my return to the office i am told that the dining chairs that are due for delivery on a project in Holland Park are delayed as the fabric is damaged. Unfortunately, the upholsterers have cut the fabric despite being notified not to do so before checking it. There is lots of finger pointing, especially as the fabric cost over £4000. Of course, my clients have organised a dinner party and so my own dining chairs have been whisked away for their pleasure. i will deal with who is to blame once the desired chairs have been delivered. Then a sad moment; i have been informed that the restaurant we designed in Mayfair last year is about to be sold and another designer is going to transform it into something else. That’s the fickle commercial world for you. tuesday Tuesday morning starts uber early at 6am for a tour of a classy spa in an hotel in London. i am working on a similar one and, while there are no spa users there, the spa manager and i have a chance to poke around. We are in the manicure/ pedicure room, she posing as the client and me as the manicurist, as we work out the ergonomics. such rooms are very complex to design and difficult to get right. i am not allowed to take photos but, thank goodness for iPhones; i take a few sneaky pics. Back on my trusty scooter and off to Holland Park to another a project, a mid Victorian
terraced house. My original brief here was for re-decoration and some fancy fitted furniture. Before starting, feeling uneasy about putting good work on top of bad, i decided to strip back some of the ceilings to see what gremlins are hiding. i discovered that the electrics could set the house ablaze at any moment with one thin wire feeding the entire upper three floors. And, antics of previous DiY bodging threatened the house with collapse. To add to this difficulty the house is listed, the clients would not vacate the house during works and the original budget now had to stretch to the remedial works. sometimes i think that it would be easier to pull a rabbit out of a hat. A year on i am now overseeing the final snagging and the house is looking superb. Having circled Hyde Park more than once today, i return to the office. i have taken on heading the continual professional development programme for the British institute of interior Design (BiiD). it’s something i feel strongly about as interior design now moves into the realm of a profession. i give over a few hours a week to pulling together an interesting programme of talks for next year. Luckily, i can delegate much to a very experienced board of interior designers. We call and email each other to discuss the possibilities, usually knowing if the selection is appropriate as we all want to attend ourselves. Last week i attended a BiiD meeting held at the RiBA to discuss employment law. Perhaps a dry subject but all those present felt glad to be so, myself included. Thankfully, the fog has now been lifted on that subject. The day finishes off nicely reading an article about the re-launch of an old institution which i worked on in Cambridge; Fitzbillies, which is a scrummy café/restaurant. t
14 : in.His LiFe s Apparently there are queues around the block to get in, perhaps because of my design, but more likely the skills of Tim Hayward, its owner and FT food critic. Wednesday Back to the gym of course and then a stop off to send a baby jacket to singapore, knitted by my mum. it’s for the newborn of a client whose home i designed in London some years ago. now married, they plan to return soon to London with the new baby and would like an even bigger home. The last place was a slick “babe magnet”. i think the new place may have a slightly different tone. Like many designers, i have my faithful clients and this couple are amongst them. i look forward to the prospect of dealing with people that trust me, know how i perform and enjoy being part of the design process. Returning back to the studio i receive an urgent call from a retired American architect who is planning to return to London. i am working on refurbishing a flat that i did for him 13 years ago in Marylebone. That should be fine, but having let him have pretty much his own way on the design, he is now panicking and wants me to re-assure him. Here is my chance to move him into the 21st century. i don’t stay long in the studio. We are furnishing a modern home for very young clients in Holland Park. Apparently, all the curtains should be rejected as the curtain maker is incompetent. i call round. The lady is concerned that the hems for the voiles are one inch different between the ground floor and the basement. i explain that the fabric is railroaded and the ceiling height differs between the two floors. Disaster is avoided. t

Holland Park s she is now worried instead that the gardener has not cut perfect angles on the topiary. Back again in the studio and on the phone to a heating engineer who is surveying a Chateau in the south of France that i will work on in the new Year. My French is ok, but my A level didn’t cover the vocabulary for blocked flues and dodgy fuse boards. However, it has to be done so that we have a clean slate ready to create the rock ‘n’ roll home that my clients want. My brief is that it has to look amazing, yet looking like they haven’t tried. i’ve had a call from Andreas von einsiedel, the well known interiors photographer. Many years ago my parents kindly let me design their flat in London. it was photographed by him and was my break. He would like me to sign off the photos again so that he can so that he can publish them worldwide. Wow! 18 years on and the project is still relevant… thursday Thursday started glumly. i have spent many long evenings with a couple pulling together the designs for their new home in Hampstead. They have now decided to go it alone. i’m crestfallen, i had put a lot of love
into that project. i discover later that they had been approaching my suppliers, trying (without success) to obtain trade discounts. i am curious to see what the end result will look like. For the rest of the day i am bouncing between Kristina and Marc checking drawings and specifications. in between i am informing progress by e-mail to clients. Running a design business means i have to be the glue, filling the gaps to create projects that are seamless. Wrongly, i assumed the designer was the prima donna, but i doubt that this will ever be my luxury. news from the spa. A smart out of town company is investing in it and would like me to make my designs fit in with their corporate image. How much of my work might be stripped away? no matter, there will be more money to spend. it’s six and my colleagues are off home. i’m off to Wandsworth for an 8pm meeting with a couple i have worked with before. They would like to add a basement to their already extensive house, with a games room, a swimming pool and space for a new
bedroom for their teenage son. i understand their life style, after all i designed this teenage boy’s nursery. They want something cool and funky in keeping with a ski chalet they stayed in. i begin to doubt that there is a recession on. Friday i scoot over to the other side of town to give a talk at KLC design school. i’m a regular there, often doing talks on inspiration and occasionally acting as guest tutor. i rather enjoy observing students discover that interior design is not quite what they thought it to be. t

his year’s sleep event, the only european showcase dedicated to hotel design, architecture and development, began in style with a packed British institute of interior Design (BiiD)-sponsored seminar presented by BiiD Past President, Lori Pinkerton-Rolet. Lori delivered an inspiring talk, entitled “Fit for Purpose”, which examined the process involved in finding and appointing the best fit design practice for a hotel project. Using findings from extensive research carried out amongst BiiD members and hotel owners, Lori explored the key criteria that determine how the right interior design team for a hospitality project should be selected. The session played to an appreciative, standing room-only audience in the event’s seminar theatre located on the busy show floor of the exhibition.
“With BiiD members very active in the hospitality sector, the sleep event provides an important opportunity for our members to keep up to speed with the latest hotel design trends, innovation and thinking,” says Diana Yakeley, BiiD President. “We were delighted also to support the seminar programme at the event. Lori’s talk provided an informed perspective for both designers and hoteliers, helping each side to understand each other better.” Lori is a Director of Rooms-service Ltd which provides bespoke design for the boutique hotel market. Other BiiD members who provided content for Lori’s talk at sleep included stephen Ryan, John Beven, Christina Fallah, Adrienne Chinn, Jacqueline Cornforth, Karen Verzariu, simon Hamilton, Matteo Bianci, Dean Keyworth and Julia Kent.

Scene changes Mark Ludmon looks at how theatre interiors have evolved, focusing on two new projects
The Marlowe’s main auditorium
W
ithin the first two months of opening, the programme at the new Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury in Kent featured ballet, opera, live bands, comedy, classical music and even some drama, with ice skating, workshops and poetry nights coming up. it demonstrates that, especially outside of London, theatres need to be flexible spaces that can host all kinds of entertainment and not just plays and musicals.
The Marlowe Theatre foyer
Theatres have evolved considerably since the 19th century when architects and interior designers such as Frank Matcham were creating truly theatrical buildings through a fantastic mix of styles from Oriental and italianate through to Renaissance and Baroque. now it is not enough to have just fixed seating facing a proscenium stage, with a small foyer and a few bars for interval drinks. The Marlowe Theatre may be named after a playwright from over 400 years ago but it reflects the latest thinking in design from Keith Williams Architects. it is a new build, replacing the old Marlowe Theatre which started life as a cinema in the 1930s. t

26 : in.UK s Within the impressive new 4,850 sq m building, the main auditorium has a capacity of up to 1,200 over three tiers – over a quarter more than the old building – designed so that no seat is further than 25 metres from the stage. This is a significant improvement on many of the seats in the old auditorium which were up to 35 metres away. The new 195 sq m Marlowe studio, with flexible-format seating for up to 150 people, has been created to provide a space for workshops, training and new and experimental work. The three-level foyer connects all the main spaces to the auditorium. A processional staircase appears to float within the foyer, described as part-sculpture, part-furniture. its external faces are clad in black plaster while its internal surfaces are made from black American walnut and inset tubular stainless-steel handrails and integral lighting. The materials are referenced in the main auditorium where the main surfaces are again lined in strips of black American walnut laid over dense plaster to give a subtly striated visual quality to the walls. This treatment also provides the necessary sound diffusion as part of the acoustical design. The convex balcony fronts are constructed from engineered pre-formed black walnut and form a broad horseshoe plan. Along with the wall surfaces, they give the sense of a highly crafted timber internal space on a grand scale. The auditorium seating, which was developed with seating suppliers Poltrona Frau has been clad in a bespoke fiery red/ orange leather, making it look like blades of colour against the darkness of the auditorium. The acoustic plaster reflector suspended from the ceiling above appears
The foyer staircase at the Marlowe Theatre as a series of dramatic folded plates. “Designed to reflect sound from the stage into the depths of the auditorium, we have emphasised its form with alternating, abstractly composed surface treatments in grey and black to give a sense of the energy being emitted from the stage,” Keith adds. With three bars and the River Restaurant, the foyer opens up links to terraces overlooking the River stour as well as views towards Canterbury Cathedral.
The furniture and fittings of the theatre, which were specified by Keith Williams Architects, include a suite of furniture predominantly by eames but with some items by Ronan & erwan Bouroullec and Patricia Urquiola, all supplied by Vitra. The £25.6m development was completed by main contractor isg Jackson in October and was the fourth realised theatre project for Keith Williams Architects which also created The Birmingham Rep, The Unicorn Theatre in London and Wexford Opera House in ireland.
in.UK : 27 Waterside theatre RHWL Architects has been working on theatre projects for 40 years, including what was one of the most innovative theatre buildings of its time, the Crucible Theatre in sheffield in 1971. Principal architect norman Bragg, who worked on the Crucible at the start of his career, recalls how that project broke with tradition by having a thrust stage, pioneered by the Chichester Festival Theatre designed by Philip Powell and Hidalgo Moya and opened in 1962. “in those days, it was seen very much as the way forward in theatre, with the actors right out in front of the audience like in their living rooms. But 40 years on, the proscenium style is still with us and shows no sign of changing.”
HUFTOn & CROW
RHWL has its own Arts Team division specialising in theatres and other arts venues and it has worked on refurbishing many 19th-century theatres – including some by Frank Matcham – as well as developing new ones. One of RHWL Arts Team’s most recent projects is the Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, which opened last year, replacing the town’s old Civic Centre. The building’s architecture, with an undulating roof line and structural ghulam timber columns, was inspired by the rolling hills of the Chilterns and its pine trees, explains norman, the project’s architect. inside, columns are set in a pattern to mirror the random scattering of trees in a forest. in the main auditorium, the wood of the balcony fronts and side walls suggests the stacked timber of a wood yard. While the main auditorium has a proscenium stage, it has added flexibility from a large flat-floor configuration in the stalls, allowing seats to be removed using motorised elevators. it means the three-tier auditorium can have a capacity of either t

Under operator Ambassador Theatre group, the theatre has a programme of West end shows, comedy, dance, gigs, ballet and opera and also hosts community events, training, business meetings and even sports demonstrations. The theatre has a large foyer covering all levels, with five

There is also a promenade area between the two performing spaces where exhibitions can be put on. norman points out that, with these kinds of bars, restaurants and exhibition spaces, modern theatres often look to attract people throughout the day, not just for performances. “it’s taking on a different approach to what they wanted in Victorian times.”

fabulous wooden floor in nicholas Kirkwood’s prestigious London shoe store has been finished and protected using Bona’s waterborne lacquers. The floor was designed by Richard Woods studio and installed and finished by wood flooring and furniture specialists, etloe, who consulted with interior fit out company, snake skin Jacket, over the most appropriate way to finish the surface.

Beautifully finished flooring
Richard Woods’ ‘wrong wood’ design was screen printed using oil based paints on to plywood strips which were then pinned and glued using Bona’s silane-based adhesive to a ply subfloor. gaps were filled using Bona’s gap Master (black) to ensure compatibility with the adhesive and top coat. This floor deserved a carefully considered lacquer specification to ensure an adequate level of surface protection and the right look. Bona’s technical team recommended using two coats of Bona Mega, followed by three coats of Bona Traffic – the company’s toughest lacquer – to protect the soft plywood flooring and the screen printed design. To achieve the required glossy look Bona Polish (gloss) was applied after the top coat of Bona Traffic lacquer had cured. A Bona spray Mop, the easy way to maintain a wooden floor and keep it looking as good as new, is being used for daily maintenance. etloe is now working with Richard Woods studio to develop a flooring product based on the specification for the nicholas Kirkwood store, which will allow their designs to be used more widely in commercial environments.

lothing and lighting design come together in the latest products from Belgian-based Deltalight. The manufacturer, which specialises in contemporary lighting, worked with fashion designer Tim Van steenbergen to create Metronome, inspired by the company’s existing conical Husk design. The result is a light made up of a waterfall of white aluminium strips, playing with light and shadow. “Thanks to my shows and theatre work, i understand the importance of lighting,” Van steenbergen explains. “Light can make or break something.” The Metronome comes in four versions, in aluminium: white, red, black and a combination with cork. Five XXL versions of the Metronome pendant lamp were used by Van steenbergen at his catwalk show to present his 2012 summer collection, and these are also available tailor-made for both residential and commercial interiors such as hotels, restaurants and retail. Paul Ameloot, general manager and designer at Deltalight, adds: “We wanted to explore new shapes, colours and materials within our own sector but we also wanted to find common ground with other trendsetting sectors. Brainstorming with creative people from various sectors, cultures and worlds is extremely educational and refreshing. Fashion was top of our list.” Collaboration is at the heart of a new collection from elstead Lighting which has teamed up with fabric and wallpaper manufacturer and designer Harlequin. Light by Dernier & Hamlyn at Coworth Park, Berkshire or postcards.” However, he says that over the past 15 years, it has been increasingly working on contemporary lighting, not just for hotels and other historic buildings but also for super-yachts. At Dorchester Collection’s hotel Coworth Park in Berkshire, it worked with Martin Hulbert Design to develop a chandelier above the reception desk which combines a brass sheet beaten by hand to look like leaves. Dernier & Hamlyn also integrates the latest in energy-efficient lighting into projects. in its work on the restoration of the Theatre Royal in newcastle and the City Varieties music hall in Leeds, the company produced lighting that recreated the beauty of the original fittings but used LeD technology. its work at the City Varieties, in partnership with Theatresearch, included refurbishing four original sunburners and manufacturing
a new one in the same style as well as producing new chandeliers, wall lights and ceiling fittings for the auditorium, lobbies and bar areas, all in the original 19th-century style. However, the LeD technology means the lighting requires less than 1,000 watts for the whole theatre and makes it easier to maintain. The old and the new are combined in a new concept from Kevin Reilly Lighting. A candle made of high-temperature wax is carved out and a bulb is inserted inside, creating a permanently “burning” source of soft light. Called the White Altar, they are embedded with electrical fittings that enable each fixture to emit a warm glow throughout the day or night. “A light during the day needs to be minimal and sculptural but at night it should be magical,” Kevin explains. He has also developed the concept for an elegant

My 2011 highlights… in.Design spoke to designers Lee Broom, Howard Sullivan and the team at Graven Images about their highlights during 2011 Lee Broom
each year, Lee Broom’s star shines ever brighter in the design world, and 2011 has seen him rise to even greater heights. He founded his own company four years ago and has gone on to become one of the UK’s leading interior and product designers. so far, he has designed over 40 bar and restaurant interiors across the UK and won nearly 20 awards. in February this year, he opened his first shop within The Bluebird in Chelsea, London, which he marked by creating two new lighting products – the frosted Decanterlight and the Decanterlamp. in May, he designed an exclusive collection of parquetry-inspired furniture and lighting, called Parq Life, for UK design brand Deadgood!, which combined the traditional herringbone pattern of parquetry flooring with contemporary curves in furniture. in september, he unveiled his latest collection at the London Design Festival, called salon. inspired by the curvaceous lines of 1930s upholstery, with a hint of fashion fetishism, the collection features soft silhouettes contrasted and accentuated with modern stud detailing. in line with previous work, he has used traditional British craftsmanship. interior projects this year have included the personal shopping suite at Topman in Oxford street, London, which echoes the mood of a contemporary gentleman’s club.
it uses Lee’s signature pieces such as the Cathode Console which acts as a neon-lined concierge desk. since september, shoppers at Westfield stratford City in east London have been able to see Lee’s large circular lighting in corridors off the main walkways – a dazzling array of fairground light bulbs surrounding a polished lacquered brass ring to create a halo of light. To top all this, he has ended the year by winning the title of British Designer of the Year in the elle Decoration awards, voted on by designers and the public. “it’s been a brilliantly busy year, and winning this award is a wonderful way to end it,” Lee says.

This year marked a quarter of a century since glasgow-based design company graven images was founded by architect Ross Hunter and graphic designer Janice Kirkpatrick after graduating from the Mackintosh school of Architecture and glasgow school of Art. The practice has grown into a specialist in interior design and other design disciplines in the hotel and leisure, corporate and public sectors worldwide. Over the past year, it has been busy with many projects overseas, under design director Jim Hamilton. The latest ones to be completed include the interior design of the reception, restaurant, ballroom and other public spaces at the Radisson Blu hotel in Chicago and full fit-out of the new-build Missoni hotel in Kuwait. Other hotel projects are under way on the Caribbean island of Aruba, in Oman and in Copenhagen but this year it has been winning awards for its hospitality venues in scotland.
in October, it picked up nearly all the interior design awards at the scottish style Awards:

Original features were restored with lofty ceilings, intricate gold-leaf detailing and sculptural plasterwork, with a new mix of showpiece main halls, intimate rooms and breath-taking spaces over five floors. giving credit to gi group’s in-house team, Ross says: “A lot of our work in recent years is overseas so it is really nice to be recognised nationally for a project in our home city in glasgow. To be honest, we’re not usually ones for awards but to be recognised among design royalty such as David Collins and ilse Crawford is brilliant.”

For Howard sullivan, director at international design agency Yourstudio, one of the highlights of 2011 was the Dazed and Confused exhibition running at somerset House in London until January 29. “As trend monitors, part and parcel of our work is to see all the latest and most exciting environments we can. My favourite in 2011 has to be the very modest but highly creative Dazed and Confused retrospective exhibition. Having been a seminal publication on the world of fashion, music and street culture, the way that the pages of this magazine – going back over the 20 years that it’s been published – spill out into the space is staggering. Contrasted with the formal baroque interiors of somerset House, a series of cuboid forms slither, forming slabs you walk over, arches and triangles you walk under and generally creating a really dynamic trail through the space. each of these forms has pages of Dazed and Confused magazine through the ages sandwiched underneath the glass section on one side, with the other sides being mirrored. A great exhibition, and a great showcase for such a creative and dynamic magazine. We give it 10 out of 10.

Hidden secrets Mark Ludmon finds out how a modern sound system need not spoil your interior design
M
usic is an essential part of any leisure space, but it can be a challenge to balance the needs for a luxurious and relaxing interior with the hardware of a sound system. in top-end restaurants, bars and other venues around the world, this has been tackled by installing “invisible” loudspeakers from UK-based Amina Technologies. They can regularly be found in leisure environments where
clients want high-quality entertainment, information and communication systems but not have the interior design corrupted by visually obvious technology. One of the most recent projects to use invisible loudspeakers was the grill at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. The luxurious interior was designed by s2dio, a design company in Kuala Lumpur founded by Ramlee Mahat, t
installing Amina speakers
52 : in.UK s a Malaysian-born and London-trained designer. The elegant interior, complete with in-built fireplaces, features islands of glass lacquered dark timber interspersed with inverted waterfall chandeliers that sparkle like ice crystals. Ambient music is provided via Amina hidden speakers which lie cloaked beneath the surface of the highly lacquered ceiling islands, making it impossible to see any music source. They provide a highly dispersed and even level of sound, filling the entire space with clear natural sound but in a way that makes it impossible to perceive where the sound is coming from. This was achieved on site by first building plywood island structures onto the ceiling. The Amina product is set into the island with the active surface of the Amina panel set flush with the front of the plywood. it is tested and then the whole surface,
The upstairs bar at the Bingham hotel
including the speakers, is veneered over and gloss-lacquered in situ. “The result is truly magnificent, blending the highest quality in modern exuberant Asian style with a graceful acoustic ambience to create a venue which fully matches the opulent lifestyle of the guests it attracts,” says Amina managing director Richard newlove. Unlike traditional pistonic loud speakers, Amina speakers work in the same way as natural musical instruments do, such as an acoustic guitar or piano: the vibration created in the body of the instrument produces the sound. in these speakers, excitation drivers set up tiny vibrations in the sound panel which transfer through the plaster, and the paint or wallpaper that is placed on top of it, and then excite air molecules at the surface. These then excite other air molecules and so on until the sound reaches your ears. Amina speakers were used as part of a project at the Bingham, a boutique hotel in a
georgian grand house in Richmond in southwest London. Former store rooms were converted into a new events space called the garden Rooms, where Amina’s Plaster in-wall loudspeakers were installed into the ceiling. An opening in the ceiling was made and the speakers were mounted within this opening. They were covered with 1mm to 2mm plaster skim and then decorated over. Upstairs in the main bar, two Amina AiW 5 80 watt plaster-in-wall speakers were installed and plastered over so that, once decorated, they are invisible. They were specified by soundceilings, which specialises in AV for the hospitality trade. “At the Bingham, we believe a lounge bar should be a place to relax, enjoy a drink, and unwind in front of the fireplace,” says hotel manager isador gorgevik. “The room is the star, and we wanted a solution that was sympathetic to the georgian features, be minimalist, but deliver superb sound quality.”

Launched in 2004, it is the only UK event focused solely on materials for surface design, enabling architects, interior designers and specifiers to source innovative and inspiring surface solutions. The show takes place from 7-9 February at the Business Design Centre in north London and features natural stone, wood, tiles, recyclable materials, metal, living materials, paints, illuminated surfaces and coatings that can be used internally and externally. not only does the event include an exhibition, but there are also interactive features, live demonstrations, seminars, talks and debates, all reflecting the theme of “material thinking” and highlighting the thought processes that go into the development and selection of materials. One of the features is Future Thinking, which will highlight not only the latest materials in production but also those still in the development stage. it will be curated by sCin, the UK sourcing and advisory company for materials, and will include the development of hybrid materials and the new generation of composites.
