Style Signature Retailers, interior designers, architects and specifiers heading to the January Furniture Show (Birmingham NEC, January 22nd – 25th) can expect an even bigger and better event with extended show space and more exhibitors.
W
e catch up with Paul Rom, CEO at ROM, one of the leading international bespoke furniture manufacturers, to discover what they’ll be unveiling at the show, how individuality, connectivity and digitalisation is becoming key in consumer buying habits, and why retailers should visit the show… How long have you been going to the show at the NEC in January? ROM has been exhibiting at the NEC on and off since 2006. The company was present from 2006 until 2011 and then since JFS restarted in 2015. What’s the best thing about it? For us as a Belgian supplier, it is the opportunity to have a large audience in the UK and to meet almost all of our partners during the show. Year-on-year, JFS is without a doubt the most important event in the UK for us. When do your first start planning for the show? We exhibit at five major fairs throughout the season in Europe and JFS is the only major fair we exhibit at in the UK. Throughout the year we plan the show through debriefings, stand booking, what improvements can be made on the year before, idea generation, planning for architect briefings, product selection, set-up and stand design. Things
‘Signature’ by ROM really do start to be put in motion I would say around September, in the lead up to the show season. Any ‘inside information’ about your plans for the 2017 show? This year, the main star of the show will be our new collection called Signature. Featuring a slim silhouette and brand new comfort technology, this stunning collection brings modern elegance and functionality together to create an exquisitely revolutionary range. Integrating a number of new intelligent features into a beautifully presented collection, Signature effortlessly combines contemporary style
with innovative design. The collection is the perfect extension of our existing product ranges which of course, will remain and which we will continue to add to as well. What trends will be emerging for 2017? I think it is more about what is becoming important within the furniture business. Individuality, connectivity and digitalisation are at the forefront of what the furniture industry is concentrating on. People want to have their own style, and there is a clear willingness to design individual products. We are currently the only company on the market that offers the opportunity to combine all of these elements into one

How do you typically spend your evenings while at the show? We typically spend them with our sales team. As we have a dedicated UK-based team of sales agents and our headquarters is based in Belgium, we unfortunately don’t have the chance to get together very often. A Week In The Life Of Evros Agathou Evros Agathou is the Creative Director of the international awardwinning London design studio, Avocado Sweets. Founded in 2010 by Evros and his wife Susie, Avocado Sweets combines their skills in interior design, branding and public relations to deliver stand-out concepts that have caught the attention of the media and design lovers world-wide. Evros is an alumni of KLC School of Design and a BIID member. Monday I start the week taking my 6 year old son to play football at 8am. I’m not really a morning person and it’s getting harder as the temperature drops. But I love seeing the energy, enthusiasm and skill he displays first thing in the morning. He’s fanatical about football and I help coach years 1 and 2 at the school.
Susie (my wife and business partner) and I have breakfast in a new little place on the Holloway Road and discuss the week ahead. Being hospitality designers we can’t help dissecting the interior and debating the viability of the concept. The owner is beyond charming and the interior has some potential but lacks personality and hasn’t really tapped into the current casual-

I stop myself from offering advice! This week we’re planning for a new residential client and catching up on various exciting on-going hospitality projects. I head out for a site meeting with the contractors on a restaurant design as they’re installing the booth seating and I need to check it’s fitted correctly. Tuesday After catching up in the studio, I set off early afternoon to travel to Croydon for a photoshoot. I’m going to visit a unit we designed in the new BoxPark complex of shipping containers. I get there early to check out some of the incredible street-art gracing Croydon’s buildings these days. BoxPark is looking great. Our clients, Wine & Deli have received lots of amazing feedback on the design and their concept is really hitting the spot with the locals. I love this stage of a project where all the planning and creative work comes together and you get to enjoy the results. We conceived a totally unique urban-deco look, mashing up graffiti art with decorative Tom Dixon lights, metro tiles, bistro chairs and a hot pink trim. Built in a shipping container, the space is tight and we worked every inch to create a comfortable enough kitchen area with as much seating as possible. Wine & Deli is the brainchild of three energetic local young guys and their passion and drive is infectious (not to mention the fabulous array of little known boutique wines and exciting deli plates).

18 : in.HIS LIFE presentation for a new pizza restaurant concept. I’m really excited about the design we’ve come up with and I’m looking forward to sharing it with our client - a father and son, making their first expansion move from their successful central London flagship site. We’ve mixed bespoke designs with some beautiful tiling, lights and seating. Let’s hope they like it. Tonight it’s my children’s school disco and I’m helping to run the photo-booth. Cue a barrage of excited primary school children, ridiculous props and far too many crisps and sweets (unfortunately not for me). I’ve lucked out with my fellow helpers and we all have a good laugh and raise lots of money for the school’s new science room.
Chit Chaat Chai restaurant dining room, Wandsworth, London Wednesday Today is all about creative inspiration as I prepare concepts for a new client. This client found us through the home renovation and design platform, Houzz, and was drawn to our colourful unique designs. He wants to create a really stunning sociable space so I’m freeing up my brain to start visualising his home. I like to bring in ideas from our hospitality design into the residential setting, while creating something unique and personal for the client. I tend to mull over ideas during the day, travelling on the bus around London soaking up the sights and sounds, and looking at new product designs. Today I’m completing the final stages of a tattoo design I’ve created using Ancient Greek patterns at Scratchline in Kentish Town. Despite the pain, the process gives me some focussed time out to innovate, which I carry

20 : in.HIS LIFE on to the next stage. I catch up over lunch with Susie who has been working on some branding concepts for a commercial client. Working in hospitality design is a great excuse to eat out and today we’re trying a very interesting Chinese street food restaurant with ‘smacked cucumber’ as a surprisingly good starter. After lunch we plan out a talk I’m giving to students from KLC School of Design. As part of their alumni network I know the level of self-discipline and self-belief you need to make it in interior design. After setting up Avocado Sweets from scratch six years ago, it’s great to take some time to reflect on our journey and how far we’ve come. It’s been a busy week so we head home after school pick up for some family time with our kids. Saturday Susie is taking our son to a party today so I hit the shops with my daughter. Hmmm, it’s a dangerous combination as she loves new products as much as I do! She’s got a great eye and always comes up with left-field ideas. I’m trying to encourage her as much as possible to hold on to that freshness. It’s what draws our clients to us and sets us apart from the crowd. We check out Size? to see their new trainer designs and wind up at Spun in Covent Garden where you can watch rock being created before your eyes. It’s an old friend’s birthday tonight so I head out to The Oxford in Kentish Town for some food, drink and great company. Sunday Sunday is all about good food (again!), family and friends. This time we’re cooking.
Islington apartment living space and Lego wall There’s nowhere I’m happier than out in the garden with my BBQ. I treat myself to some choice cuts from our local butcher and get to work on the spices. I love mixing up Eastern with Western flavours. I’m guilty of constantly over-catering so we try to make sure we have friends and family over to share the experience. We designed our home with hosting in mind, so we all enjoy hanging out in the kitchen and garden, come rain or shine! With no separate play-room we keep all the kids occupied with the vertical Lego play wall we installed in our open-plan living room. Sharing our living space reminds me constantly what a difference a welldesigned home makes to our quality of life. Design is about effortless enjoyment and enabling that enjoyment. That’s what we live for every day at Avocado Sweets. It’s been a full-on journey and I wouldn’t change a thing!

ou may have a client who is looking at letting out their property, or even have your own property that you want to generate income from in some way. Holiday letting offers you flexibility and control over your property, as well as being a lucrative asset acting as another income stream each month.
As you can appreciate, the interior is very important in a holiday let. This really makes a difference to how guests feel whilst staying in your property. Coming To Fruition Suna Interior Design is an award-winning boutique interior design consultancy who provide interior services for both property developers and the hospitality industry. Helen Fewster and Rebecca Tucker head up the London-based studio ensuring that a high level of attention is dedicated to each client and project.
S
una interior Design was briefed by fruition Properties to create an exceptional design for their four bedroom show home in contemporary and charismatic ravenscourt Park. The brief was to create an interior design that would pay homage to
this beautiful, leafy location in West London, and appeal to the potential purchasers who will most likely be young families, european or city first and second time buyers as well as those who are downsizing – all of whom though enjoy entertaining.
Thus it was important to ensure that the design be chic, trendy and make a memorable and lasting stylish impression. “The team was inspired by the location, the lovely coffee shops, green and leafy ravenscourt Park and the family-friendly

24 : in.Brief atmosphere and wanted to bring this all into the design,” said Co-Director and interior designer rebecca Tucker. The palettes in this design dictate the mood and usage of the space. So for the often-used family room the colour palette comprises mustard and chrome with accents of greys, black and white. “Suna interior Design wanted to create an impressive impact with the design and using a dramatic palette is a great way to do this,” rebecca added. On the ground floor the front entrance opens onto the big and inviting family living room which leads to the dining room and then the kitchen. “As the rooms are essentially staggered it was vital to create a striking backdrop for the space,” explained rebecca. “To do this we selected the eye-catching, large-scale brushed geometric print wallpaper in ivory and mustard from Harlequin. We ensured that each room has its own feel that also complements the others, by creating a visual differentiation between each.” The family living room introduces the salient palette with two bespoke mustard punchbutton tub chairs sit in front of the window. rebecca selected the nest tables (between the tub chairs) and coffee table from french Connection because of their intriguing look – mottled glass with black metal – and opted for the grey rug with a subtle stripe which brings the room together. The bespoke ‘L’ shaped sofa with a velvet finish in a champagne colour sits opposite, defining the seating area. Two large statement, black framed mirrors overlook the dining room which features

The bespoke white dining chairs with black piping detail sit at the elegant white lacquer table. The table setting is chic and sophisticated in its design. Behind the dining room sits a breakfast bar creating a division between the dining room and kitchen. “elegant black stools ensure that talking, drinking and eating can also take place in a less informal environ,” said rebecca. “it was very important to create a design that was both aesthetically pleasing and functional at
the same time. Storage falls into this genre – a home is lived in and needs somewhere for treasured items to belong. So we’ve incorporated various forms into this design, such as the closed cabinetry below the gallery of family portraits in the dining room and the open display unit in the kitchen, for the beautiful collections you love and want to display.” Heading upstairs, past the original abstract floral artworks, commissioned for this project from artist Steve Humble, on the first floor, is the formal living room. This is
a more mature space and features a softer, more muted palette which is neutral, clean, elegant and sophisticated. each piece in this refined room, from the bespoke sofas to the dark wood coffee table with a white faux-leather finish has been thoughtfully selected. A large brushed chrome, round mirror overlooks this refined room. further enhancing the ambiance is a cultured corner for cocktails or a whisky, a pair of contemporary Camerich chairs sit on either side of the stylish cabinet in the corner of this room.

28 : in.Brief The mustard and chrome palette again features in the guest bedroom/study, creating a vibrant and exciting space. (The 60’s inspired design of interlocking rectangles wallpaper from Harlequin creates a geometric impression and focal point in this room.) Drawing your eye towards the bed and hanging above it is the prominent, rounded metallic spiked mirror. The bed itself features a low and long bespoke black panelled headboard and is dressed with a selection of black, white and mustard cushions and throws. Two stylish Snoopy lights from Conran sit on either bedside table, with their marble bases and black enamel ‘lids’.
The impressive master bedroom is stylish, sophisticated and luxurious
The slim-line black metal, industrial desk and dark-wood shelving create the study element. To give the study a quirky touch items such as the moustache jars and solitaire game accessorise the space. Above the desk hangs a British isles word map, an amusing artwork which is made from the names of each of the locations it covers. “in the teenager’s bedroom we wanted to incorporate a sense of both fun and style,” said rebecca, “so we selected the playful, slightly stormy Nuvolette wallpaper from fornasetti and trendy, modern items of furniture. The palette continues the mustard, chrome, greys, black and white theme. The punchy mustard on the bed creates an impact in the room while the greys and blacks add a layer of sophistication and the white cabinetry and bespoke white lacquer headboard enhance the sense of space. “The fun Anglepoise bedside lights from french Connection feature a marble base and chrome touches. The chrome is repeated in the studded mirror. Completing the look is the Hans Wegner style shell chair
The engaging guest bedroom is dramatic and impressive in black and walnut and the feature pendant light.” Opposite is the child’s bedroom. “Here we selected a palette of soft blues and yellows, representing the playful sunlight and blue skies that stream through the
windows,” rebecca said. “This room is filled with fun, from the build-your-own bulldog head hanging between the beds, to the bright yellow contemporary bedside lamps, the bespoke BfG throws and roald Dahl cushions on the bed. Added to this are the eames style chairs and table and the

An amusing and creative space for any child.” On the top floor is the master bedroom, which is luxy and comforting. The palette reflects this and the adult haven that it is through the warm greys and taupe used, which create an impact and enhance the views of London. The feature wall behind the bed has a diamond pattern in silver and taupe, onto which sits the bespoke floor to ceiling panelled headboard. “To enhance the opulent feel in the room we selected a combination of textures, for example the quilted throw with matching cushions on the bed together with a faux-fur throw to create layers of luxury,” explained
rebecca. “At the foot of the bed is a bespoke punch-button bench that completes the bed detail. The contemporary black glass and polished steel table and chair inform the dressing area.” An additional point of interest in this room is the gallery of black and white images hanging opposite the bed. “This was a great project that we really enjoyed working on and bringing to life,” stated rebecca. “for example on the ground floor we wanted to ensure that there was a layered effect to the design in order to give each room its own space, but so that the entire area worked together too. The client enabled us to be bold in our decisions and the result is an interior design that pays
homage to this beautiful, leafy location in West London. “This ideal entertainment home is chic, trendy, creates a very stylish impression and is a design that the client loves and fits the brief. if we’re talking specifics, then we’d have to say the slim-line black metal, industrial desk in the study is one of our favourite items. it’s retro and industrial and adds an edge to the room. i also really love the Nuvolette wallpaper from fornasetti in the teenager’s bedroom, it’s both calm and dramatic! if we had to pick a favourite room though, we’d have to select the family room, it’s really impactful and sets the tone for the interior design in this fabulous home.” www.sunainteriordesign.com

Diana’s OBE was announced in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in June this year. “I am exceptionally honoured and proud to have received the OBE, particularly as the citation was for services to the UK interior design profession,” she said. “It was a huge privilege to receive it from Prince William, in the company of so many other remarkable recipients at Buckingham Palace.” Diana has served as President of the BIID for two terms and is also a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers (FCSD). Diana trained at the Inchbald School of Design in 1979 and commenced practice in 1981 with Yakeley Associates. Her career flourished as she built a reputation for understated, elegant and luxurious design. In 1983 she was elected to the BIID and her involvement with the Institute continued to grow, with her election to
fellowship of the Institute in 1994. Diana has designed numerous interiors for residential, commercial, civic and other buildings in Britain and abroad. In 2011, she was asked by the British Government to curate the temporary conversion of iconic Lancaster House in the Mall as The British Business
Embassy during the London 2012 Olympics, to showcase the best of British design and manufacture. Diana is married to the renowned Americanborn architect Stephen Yakeley, and they have five children.

BIID Has Designs On Japan The British Institute of Interior Design is celebrating a successful trade visit to Japan, organised with help of the UK Department for International Trade. Led by BIID member Noriko Sawayama and in collaboration with the British Embassy in Japan, a number of BIID members, including BIID President Susie Rumbold, travelled to Japan on a two-week mission to help export British design skills and knowledge, and promote the value of the BIID and its members abroad.
T
he next four years see Japan hosting a number of international sporting events, including the Rugby World Cup 2019 and the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, bringing with it a surge in visitors to the country. Japan’s inbound tourism has already doubled over the past four years and is expected to double again by 2020. In preparation for this
influx of tourists, Japan is in the midst of a significant hotel development boom across the country, bringing vast opportunities for BIID members to be involved in these exciting hospitality projects. According to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), design is the UK’s largest and most successful export.
In response to the strong demand for UK interior designers, in October a group of BIID members, including BIID President Susie Rumbold and BIID Past President Daniel Hopwood, embarked on a two-week trade mission to Japan. Known for its high professional standards and creative expertise in interior design,
36 : in.BIID not just in the United Kingdom but internationally, the BIID were invited to speak in front of several large audiences of hoteliers and developers about UK design for the hospitality sector.
“The tour provided an ideal platform for the BIID to promote British design talent and highlight the possibilities for collaboration between designers in Japan and the UK,” said Susie. “There are hugely exciting opportunities in Japan at present for the UK design community. One of the great benefits of being a BIID member is being able to showcase your professional expertise internationally and to form relationships with both BIID members and potential clients across the world. Visiting Japan provided real creative inspiration, as well as being a valuable professional networking opportunity.” As well as presenting to hoteliers and property developers, the BIID also visited a number of universities and design shows across the country, including JAPANTEX, IFFT, Tohoku Bunka Gakuen University and Kyoto
Sika University, to promote British interior design, the benefits of the BIID, and what it can offer overseas members. BIID members also benefited from a fascinating cultural tour, visiting historic and modern architectural highlights and learning about traditional Japanese crafts and skills, including authentic Kyo-yuzen dyeing, one of Japan’s best known dyeing techniques. Members participated in a full-day workshop in Kyoto where they created traditional Japanese paper, visited an exhibition to celebrate the 300th birthday of Jakuchu Ito, one of Japan’s most renowned artists, learnt about Nishijin Brocade, Japan’s famous and richly decorative shuttle-woven fabric produced in Kyoto’s Nishijin district, and tasted Japanese delicacies. The BIID currently has 30 Japanese members with several other members working on projects based in Japan. The Institute is expecting this to grow over the next four years.
