Welcome to the June issue of in.Design.
Opening this issue on p06 we take a look at New Designers – the yearly showcase for some awesome emerging design talent. Get over to Islington this June and July to be able to say “I saw them before they were famous!”
In Week in the Life (p10) Aneeqa Khan talks to us about how she launched eporta.com, which now has 800 vendors, giving them the opportunity to sell to a much wider market than they may be able to reach on their own. And as eporta will soon launch in the US, she seems to be on the right track!
Staircases are often not considered as ‘interiors’ but simply as a build element – but whether starting from scratch with a new build or undertaking a refurbishment, there are some truly stunning staircases that can be the design focus of any property. On p24 we look at a couple of fabulous designs to get you thinking. And talking of design focus, choosing the right rug can finish – or even dictate – a room’s theme. See p18 for some wonderful creations.
If you need a show fix after the fun of last month’s Clerkenwell Design Week, consider a trip to Olympia for the HOUSE fair (see p36), where the BIID are hosting several talks in the HOUSE theatre. It promises to be an informative event as well as providing design inspiration with over 450 brands exhibiting!
Fancy a trip where you can combine hospitality with great interior design? Then the Pullman Liverpool has to be on your map! This new waterfront hotel, designed by Denton Corker Marshall, features in in.Brief on p28 – it’s sure to impress.
And if you’d like your project, event or diary to appear in in.Design, give me a call!

A Week In The Life Of Aneeqa Khan Aneeqa Khan is the CEO and founder of www.eporta.com, the leading global platform connecting trade buyers with interiors suppliers. Launched in 2015, she has already built up an impressive 800 vendors!
Monday Monday morning starts with a 7am cycle class at a gym near my home, and then over to Clerkenwell where our offices are. We moved office 6 months ago and it’s a great place to be – filled with many creative and entrepreneurial people (and great food places!). We’re in the same office as an interior design practice and a design and architecture PR group so we’re in good company. We have a 9am company team meeting where everyone gets together and talks through their last week and the week ahead. The team is growing fast and we have many different skill sets, from people who select the interiors brands we work with to very technical infrastructure software developers, so it’s a good way for everyone to know what’s going on. Tuesday Nowadays much of my week is taken up with meetings, and today’s no exception. I spend the morning meeting with the CEO of a new brand who would like to join the platform, discussing their new collection of items and new product launches. Next I’m off to meet with the team at Clerkenwell Design Week to discuss our partnership with them as we are their digital partners this year, making it easier for trade professionals to build relationships with suppliers during and after their show.
The Ashbourne sofa from A Rum Fellow is a continual best seller
The third meeting of the day is interviewing someone who would like to join our team as a Community Manager, working with our community of interior designers and architects to source furniture and lighting – the interview went well. Between meetings I spend an hour

Boeme, one of the most popular British brands on the eporta site reviewing/approving new changes that are being released on the platform with one of our software developers. I do this for every change we make, so often I’ll do quick reviews a number of times a day. We’re known by our community as having very simple to use technology so I’m obsessed with keeping it this way with any change we make! After two more meetings I’m off to have dinner at Sticks’n’Sushi with another founder
who is at a similar stage of scaling their business, and we exchange ideas on the best way of doing things (hiring, processes, accounting, legals, anything!). London has become one of the most interesting cities for tech innovation and everyone is always interested in sharing ideas so there’s a great network of us around now. Wednesday The morning starts with a 7am swim. I then travel across town for breakfast with
the CEO of Charlotte Tilbury who has just moved offices and used eporta to source some exciting lighting features; they’re the fastest growing beauty brand out there so it’s always exciting to meet them. I’m spending most of my day in the office today. The morning is spent pouring over feedback coming through from our existing members on what we should be doing next, and then sitting down with my co-founder Simon to start drawing out changes
12 : in.HER LIFE we should be making to the platform. Simon and I have been friends for over 10 years now since we met at university, so these sessions are always good fun. Tonight we’re holding a drinks party for a number of architects based in Clerkenwell, so Simon and I head down to meet the team there after we finish. Thursday The day starts meeting with our current investors, which include Robin Klein, on how the business is going. As well as formal meetings, I regularly meet informally with our backers such as Will Cooper who set up Achica, Rohan Blacker who founded sofa. com and Ed Wray who is behind Betfair – they’ve all started their own businesses at some stage so are eager to help us along our journey. Then it’s back to the office to trawl through CVs and meet with people I’ve been
introduced to as potential team members. Recently, as we’re needing to grow the team, this is a really time consuming part of my day-to-day. We’re lucky in that businesses such as ours attract a high level of interest – but it takes time to find the right people not only in terms of experience but also personality and attitude. Our team has a real patchwork of skills, which is what creates energy, but sharing a common sense of ambition is what keeps us together, so we’re always looking out for that. Friday I’m back cycling this morning at 7am. After a few meetings on the way into the office, I’m on the phone with our international partners in the US. The team will be expanding there soon so I’m now regularly speaking with interesting companies. Friday afternoon we have tea with a group of talent scouts we work with – design

Sarah Christensen is one of the smaller niche brands that eporta support bloggers, art and design college teachers and journalists who have scanned the trade shows globally and provide a list of the best up and coming talent. As well as working with well-known brands like Roche Bobois, Poltrona Frau, and Cassina we are committed to sourcing at least 10% of our catalogue from emerging talent that buyers cannot find elsewhere. This is one of the most rewarding parts of my job as we allow very, very, small businesses access to a global network of buyers. At the end of the day, it’s a team catch-up on how the week went, and Friday team drinks at our local pub The Clerk & Well. Saturday The day starts with a long early morning run in Hyde Park. I’ve always found it hard to sleep in on the weekend so I’ve learnt not
to try! I live with my partner and we both have hectic jobs so the weekend is golden. Today I’m meeting with a few friends for a Portuguese brunch (one of them is Portuguese) and we talk about everything that isn’t design. I studied Politics, Philosophy & Economics at university so have a range of friends doing interesting things; from working as a video curator at YouTube to being a campaigner for the Living Wage Campaign. I’m in the States next week for work and often my weekends are travelling to weddings (I’ve hit the age where wedding season has started!) so when we’re in London we try to do something interesting in the city. A friend of mine is a theatre producer so often we’ll head down to see one of his plays – today we went to see the comedy duo Johnny & the Baptists at The

Networking: a major part of any business! Soho Theatre who were great. Sunday I love cooking on Sundays when I’m in London so I usually start with breakfast. Today it’s Indian themed – as I’m part Indian I usually try to incorporate a spicy twist to anything I make. I’m most creative on the weekends and it’s often when I have my best ideas so I’ll usually spend a few hours working on strategy in the late morning/afternoon, as well as anything that came up during the week I didn’t manage to get done. My aunt is in London today so we meet for an early dinner; she’s a sculptor from Holland so it’s always great to see her and see what new pieces she’s working on. Then I’m off home to pack as I’m flying to New York at 6am tomorrow morning!

Rugged Hero Whether the centrepiece of a room that dominates the decor, or the lynchpin that ties the room together, the value of a well-chosen rug cannot be understated!
R
oger Oates (www.rogeroates. com), renowned for reinventing Venetian Flatweave floorcovering for the 21st century, launched their New England Collection in spring. The unique woven texture, vibrant designs, and bold use of colour set the collections apart and form the company’s signature striped handwriting for floors and fabrics. The New England Collection comprises two designs, Whitman and Westport. Whitman is inspired by folk embroidery. A lover of all things textural, Roger Oates has been inspired by black /white and red /white folk embroidery.
Jennifer Manners’ Drizzle in Purple Rain
Using a similar principle of just two colours he has designed a simple, striking herringbone weave structure. The addition of a bold border creates a design that is evocative of folklore but with a smart, contemporary twist. The seminal colourway combines both red and black.
in.VOGUE : 19 Westport’s iconic design has a simple textured herringbone ground with a generous decorative border made up of narrow bands of colour, punctuated with a contrasting rib section. Two distinctive and contrasting themes prevail: a neutral ground with an accent border colour; and quieter, understated, unifying tones. International design studio Vanderhurd (www.vanderhurd.com) launched its latest rug collection, Amelia Truss, in May 2016. The new range explores the relationship between natural and rational systems between art, craft and design. The designs developed organically as the complexities of the weaving process and the possibilities for creating depth and volume unfolded naturally. It is a first time collaboration between Creative Director Christine Van Der Hurd and her son-in-law Jacob Van Horn, Vanderhurd New York Studio Director. The Amelia Truss design is a hand woven sumac construction created on an upright loom using 85% linen yarns. The additional 15% viscose yarn is blended with the linen to give both strength and luminosity to the rug. The design is revealed in a shifting pattern with layers of lines and colour underpinned with a grid or ‘truss’ structure. It is available in five colourways that realise a sophisticated combination of soft subtle hues, some muted, some more vibrant. The results are rugs which blend effortlessly into any interior. Sumac is a tapestry technique of weaving, similar but stronger and thicker than a Kilim, with a smooth front face and textured reverse. The technique involves wrapping coloured weft threads over

Thanks to the company’s longstanding relationship with exceptionally talented and experienced artisans working in India and Nepal, it has been able to devise new weaves and patination, while retaining the highest quality. “The collection represents the next step forward for Vanderhurd - a body of work which remains true to our design principles but breaks out into fresh territory,” explained
Christine. “Our mission at Vanderhurd is to preserve the art of weaving by being forever innovative. This collection embodies that mission.”
with each rug being individually hand woven and hand dyed in India. The entire collection is also available in custom colours through Vanderhurd’s bespoke division.
Vanderhurd took initial inspiration from the work of American artist Sol LeWitt, known for his monumental wall drawings and ‘structures’ from the late 1960s. This is reflected in the rigid geometry created by colours that pulsate in staccato lines, which move through and across the rugs’ patterns.
Jennifer Manners’ (www.jennifermanners. co.uk) rug collections strike the perfect balance between elegant and eclectic with exquisite attention to detail. Inspired by her travels around the world as an American TV news reporter, Jennifer’s designs are a marriage of images and objects collected from Mumbai to Monte Carlo and everywhere in between! The Amelia Truss collection by Vanderhurd story in beautiful detail and is brought to life by the artisans who craft the pieces by hand. Jennifer’s rugs can be hand woven flatweaves, Tibetan hand-knotted, or highquality hand-tufted so that the character of a room is enhanced by the particular style of rug that suits it. Every Jennifer Manners rug is one-of-a-kind and can be created in any design, colour and size. The watercolour effect of the Drizzle rug is created by gently rhythmic daubs of ‘paint’, crafted in wool and bamboo silk. The play of light across the surface further enhances this water-like appearance. From a distance, the small abstract shapes of township rooftops can be seen to mirror the regular undulations of crocodile hide. ‘Skin’ draws on these curved forms and is further enhanced by raised-pile bamboo silk, which adds texture and depth to the design. Topfloor by Esti (www.topfloorrugs.com),
the Chelsea Harbour Design Centre rug company, presents ‘LUMINOSO’, a new collection employing the latest generation LED light technology. LUMINOSO combines the luxurious softness of hand-tufted rugs and carpets with the extra feature of fixed or changing, single or multicoloured lights woven into the pile of the rug or carpet. This ‘multi-media’ collection, debuting with a unique piece called Stardust, features a light generating unit that feeds the fibres from a small transformer connected to a mains power source – a technique first used by the company 10 years ago. Finer gauge fibres also give the rug a softer feel underfoot without losing any of the intensity or drama of the light effects. Wool is the ideal material for LUMINOSO because it provides softness and wearability with just the right amount of density to hold the LED fibres in place, however silk or silk and wool pile is also possible, adding more glamour to the rug when needed. The
LUMINOSO, from TopFloor by Esti standard pile height is 12 mm, but custom pile heights are also possible. Because of the different lighting options available, a LUMINOSO rug or carpet can have several different ‘personalities’ according to mood. The LED fibres can also be woven into one of the company’s award-winning designs to give even more versatility. Imagine a rug or carpet that takes on a whole new look when night falls! LUMINOSO is perfect for cinema rooms, dressing rooms, bedrooms and other ‘family entertainment’ settings. It can also be used in contract and hospitality schemes to reflect a corporate logo, style or indeed on board private yachts or planes. It is a customdesigned product, which means there are no standard designs or colours, and is currently available with four different lighting modes. So whatever the room’s main flooring comprises, there’s a rug to put the finishing touches to anything!

‘Spine’ is a unique stair concept designed by Zigzag Stairs (www.zigzagdesignstudio.com) head designer Nick Burborough. ‘Spine’ was installed as a central feature in a beautifully converted farmhouse. The staircase sits in the middle of a large open space lobby on a marble floor, and rises up through a horse shoe shaped stairwell.

ELD partnership has designed a dynamic new office space at Mediahuis, home to the new Media Combination from the former Concentra Group and Corelio, providing more space for the growing editorial department. As well as providing meeting areas and work stations, ELD partnership’s design includes a contemporary helical staircase, by EeStairs (www.eestairs.co.uk), which climbs effortlessly between floors and provides a spectacular focal point. “The Mediahuis building needed expanding as staff numbers grew, but rather than the new extension feeling like a distinctly separate area to the rest of building, we wanted to create a cohesive space,” explained Geert De Clerk, Project Manager for ELD partnership. “The extension to the building is a bright and airy space which draws the eye, making the original building and the extension flow seamlessly into one building. Old and new have been brought together by a helical staircase which transfers the sense of community between the different parts of the building.” The helical design of the staircase provides a journey on which users rotate more that 360° and can take in every aspect of the space around them. Pairing these distinctly different surfaces has resulted in an attention-grabbing staircase that fits perfectly in the building and is effective in softening the feel of this modern interior. The staircase provides sweeping curves, a sense of natural warmth and texture from the combination of finishes, and a stimulating journey for everyone that uses it.
