At in.Design, we cover all kinds of interiors, from offices and public buildings to hotels and shops, but this month we focus on the home. inspired by March’s KBB Birmingham show, we look at the latest products and design ideas for bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens, where classic and contemporary sit side by side.

Traditional and modern also feature in our focus on two home interiors: we look at a fantastic restoration project by Cornish interiors of a Dorset home from the 1930s as well as some contemporary luxury apartments in Hong Kong designed by two of the world’s best, Tara Bernerd and Koichiro ikebuchi.

This month, we also hear from Roland Hartmann, the south African-born interior designer whose firm Hartmann Designs has worked on an incredible range of hospitality, residential and commercial projects in europe, Africa and the Middle east over the past 11 years. As well as coming face to face with mountain gorillas, he talks about his work on a penthouse apartment for a celebrity client – we know who it is but we couldn’t possibly tell.

Finally, on behalf of the in.Design team, i would like to congratulate and thank outgoing editor emma Denning for all her work developing the magazine over the past two years, including its redesign in 2010. she has now moved on and, as her former deputy, i have stepped into her far more fashionable shoes. i hope i can continue to make this a useful, interesting must-read title for interior design professionals.

hotel in the Lake District beat projects from across the globe to win the title of world’s best international hotel interior. Fidget Design, based in the Lake District, Cumbria, gained the five-star award in the UK Hotel Awards for best UK hotel interior for its work at the Cedar Manor Hotel in Windermere. But, as one of the highestscoring winners in the UK awards, it went on to be judged in the international Hotel Awards, leading to it winning the global title as well. Alison Tordoff, owner of Fidget Design, said: “To discover that we have won the award for the world’s best international hotel interior is just amazing. Winning both awards shows that the Lake District is right up there in terms of design and in terms of the quality of our accommodation.” Highly commended in the UK hotel interior category was The Claremont Hotel on the isle of Man, designed by Matthew godley interior Design for sleepwell Hotels and eclipse Developments (UK). The other highly commended interior was The Torrance Hotel in east Kilbride, designed by space iD. The five-star award for best UK hotel architecture went to the savoy in London, designed by Reardonsmith Architects, while the five-star award for the UK’s best new

Cedar Manor Coach House lounge and bedroom hotel construction and design went to the Town Hall Hotel in Bethnal green, London, designed by RARe Architects. Chewton glen Tree House suites in Hampshire, created by Blue Forest (UK) and Terence O’Rourke, won the five-star UK awards for both best hotel architecture and best new small hotel construction and design.

Winners in first Wood Stock Design Competition

T

he winners of the inaugural Wood stock Design Competition, organised by the American Hardwood export Council (AHeC), have been announced. The 15 shortlisted entries were showcased at the Maison & Objet exhibition in Paris in January, when the top three projects were revealed. The winner of the category for stand-alone products or furniture design was geoffrey graven of strate Collège Designers in sèvre, France. His piece, Tandem, is a seat containing small shelves plus a revolving table, designed in American white oak, showing off the grain and texture of the wood. The category of interior design was won by Audrey Yaacouli and Mélanie saillard of Lycée La Martinière in Lyon, with “The Contemporary Ornament”. Reminiscent of work by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, it is a reception desk for a school, with a repetitive use of squares and cut-outs that create shadows. The contrast of wood species creates interesting patterns with the light American tulipwood against dark American walnut. The third category challenged applicants to design an extension or renovation to an existing building. it was won by “The Transition Cube” by Mathilde Lanoë of the institut d’arts visuels in Orléans. The innovative wooden cube structure is moveable, creating an intimate and warm environment in the winter, but can slide back to allow sunlight into the conservatory area in the summer. The cladding in

The Contemporary Ornament American ash is contrasted by the darker foldable seats in American gum. AHeC launched the competition to encourage young professionals and graduates to explore the use of American hardwoods in design. it attracted entries from young designers and architects across France and Belgium.

A week in the life of… Roland Hartmann

Roland Hartmann is founder and managing director of Hartmann Designs, a leading interior architectural design firm in the hospitality, residential and corporate industries, with a portfolio of work across Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Born in South Africa, Roland was educated in Johannesburg before moving to London and later setting up his London-based firm in 2001.

Celebrity’s south Bank penthouse Monday Monday was spent on a return flight from south Africa. For Christmas i received, from my wife, a trip to Johannesburg to celebrate my brother’s 50th birthday with friends and family. During this short stay i also met with a client who flew in from ethiopia to discuss the design of two new-build properties. A highlight of my trip was meeting Jeremy Franklin, an inspiring up-and-coming artist from whom i purchased art for both myself

and a client. even though i was tired on my return to London it was great to be back home and be with my wife and three children. tuesday By the time i sit down at my desk i have already orchestrated the morning family routine of waking, dressing, feeding and dropping off my two older children at the child minder and school. The remainder of

the morning was meeting with my design team, catching up with emails, general correspondence and telephone calls. Together with the team we further developed a concept for a furniture scheme for a house in Buckinghamshire, which we recently completed. it’s an impressive georgian house surrounded by outstanding mature gardens, with the recent addition of a large lake. it is a seven-bedroom t

12 : in.His LiFe s house with a new living room and master bedroom extension with a spectacular contemporary glass conservatory which ties the house together. Late in the afternoon i went to support my son’s football team in the rain and cold. sadly they lost 6-0 but sushi in the car cheered up two eight-yearold losers. Wednesday i started the day with a contractors’ meeting to discuss the final snagging details for a small beauty and treatment salon in Kensington, followed by a lunch appointment with my PR consultant to discuss upcoming features. in the afternoon i visited a project which we are currently working on for a celebrity client (pictured). This involves combining two penthouse apartments into one large river-facing apartment on the south Bank. i am using all my years of designing to create one stunning penthouse with unique features which will enhance the owner’s experience of the apartment. i ended my day with a quick meeting with a client discussing a furniture scheme for their current central London apartment. thursday Back to the airport. This time it was an early start, travelling with a client to sofia in Bulgaria to meet with various stone and marble suppliers. What should have been a three-hour flight turned into a 12hour journey with an unexpected stop in Budapest due to heavy snow in Bulgaria. Although this was annoying and frustrating it gave my client and i the opportunity to discuss the fine details of the luxury six-bedroom development in Fulmer, Buckinghamshire. This is a large private speculative development currently under

Celebrity’s south Bank penthouse

Development in Fulmer construction. it’s a six-bedroom house with a new extension comprising of two new double-level octagonal pods. The groundfloor level of the pods will be a large formal living room leading to a state-of-the-art home cinema, whilst the upper floor houses the master bedroom leading on to an amazing master bathroom. The house is set in five acres with an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, mature lawns, wooded grounds and even a stream with several koi carp ponds.

Friday After a good night’s sleep and a delicious breakfast we headed out in the direction of sofia to meet the various local suppliers of marble and limestone. sadly there was not much to see of sofia as it was covered by a blanket of snow. After meeting not so successfully with various stone and marble companies we finally met with a company that both mines and supplies stone. We identified a fantastic limestone which can be used both internally and externally. t

The return ight to London fortunately was uneventful and i was home in good time to spend the evening with my family. Saturday and Sunday Late in the morning we all went to the zoo and had a really enjoyable family day. The children were excited to see mountain gorillas, something my wife and i have been fortunate enough to experience in their natural habitat whilst i was working on a ďŹ ve-star hotel in Kampala, Uganda. sunday is always a slow starter followed by a last-minute rush to drop the children off at their organised activities. The afternoon was spent together with friends enjoying coffee and cake. All in all it was a good week with important decisions made to keep projects moving towards completion.

Homes ancient and modern Mark Ludmon looks at two very different residential projects – modern apartments by Tara Bernerd and Koichiro Ikebuchi and a historic restoration by Cornish Interiors

O

ne is a listed Art Deco house overlooking Portland harbour in Dorset, the other is a newly built luxury residential tower overlooking Approach Bay in Tseun Wan, Hong Kong. Portland House and The Westminster Terrace represent two very different approaches to designing home interiors, with one needing to be sensitive to its historic status and the other offering carte blanche for creating the most contemporary of designs. Portland House Portland House is one of the few remaining examples of spanish Hollywood Art Deco in the UK. it is a large detached villa built in 1935 for owner geoffrey Henry Bushby by architects Lord gerald Wellesley, who was the Duke of Wellington, and Trenwith Wills. The home was donated to the national Trust in 1970 and gained a grade ii listing 11 years ago. After being let out to tenants for some years, the national Trust brought in Cornish interiors to restore it so that holidaymakers could relive the experience of living in a luxury 1930s home. “The national Trust wanted the house to have a 1930s Art Deco feel, evoking the glamour and sophistication of the era,” explains interior designer Cathryn Bishop, who founded Cornish interiors in 2003. “Being a rental property, there were also lots of boxes to tick to satisfy high visitor

expectations.” Cornish interiors worked closely with a team from the national Trust to source original deco pieces. They found 1930s beds, which needed bespoke mattresses to be made to fit them. soft furnishings were inspired by deco, using collections that evoke the imagery of the 1930s, cruise liners, starbursts and metallic colours. Beds and furniture were sourced from Wessex Beds while new items of furniture came from Lloyd Loom of spalding. They found period antique furniture at sheryl’s Art Deco emporium in surrey as well as at Hemswell Antique Centre in Lincolnshire, where the artwork was also bought. Reupholstered antiques and new Art Deco sofas came from another specialist in 1920s and 1930s furniture, scandecor. All the soft furnishings were made and fitted by Palmers Furnishings while new flooring came from

home interior specialist Designer Contracts. “One of the biggest challenges was finding the balance of interesting vintage pieces but with all the comfort of mod-cons that visitors are used to,” Cathryn adds. As well as sourcing new items to fit in the property, there was an extensive amount of restoration of the old. Original baths were re-enamelled, parquet flooring was sanded back to how it looked in its heyday, and light fittings were refurbished to reveal silverwork and crystal. This tapped into one of the specialisms of Cornish interiors which has regularly worked on the conversion and restoration of listed buildings although it also does interior design and project

24 : in.TeRnATiOnAL s the Westminster terrace From a bygone era, we come right up to date at The Westminster Terrace in Castle Peak, Hong Kong. This 42-storey tower was developed by grosvenor and Asia standard as an exclusive residential development with a clubhouse, landscaped terraces, infinity pool and tennis court. Designed by Londonbased architects Paul Davis & Partners with Hong Kong architects Aedas, it features 59 luxury duplex apartments, with unit sizes ranging from 3,200 to 6,500 square feet, including a penthouse on the top floor and two large apartments below. The 8,343 sq ft penthouse on the 40th floor has been designed by Tara Bernerd & Partners, the practice founded by British designer Tara Bernerd and architect Thomas griem in 2002. it has a living room and dining room with views over Approach Bay plus a master bedroom with a private study room and three guest bedrooms that include walk-in closets, ensuite bathrooms and more views across the bay. The interior design of the apartment – which can no longer be pictured as it has been sold – reflects the meeting of east and west, using materials such as marble, stone and onyx – one of the key features is a striking onyx staircase. The public areas and two of the show apartments were designed by Atelier ikebuchi, the practice headed by singaporebased designer and architect Koichiro ikebuchi. One of Atelier ikebuchi’s priorities was to bring selected exterior architectural elements into the interior to emphasise the development’s unique location and evoke a sense of continuity between the outside and inside. Contrasting textures and materials were then used to enrich the visual experience of the spaces. t

What’s cooking From affordable solutions to luxury concepts, Mark Ludmon examines some of the latest designs and appliances for domestic kitchens

A

long with padded shoulders, big hair and legwarmers, the 80s is remembered as the time of the Ram flat-pack kitchen. Ram Kitchens, part of Yorkshirebased spring Ram, was founded in 1979 and was at its height in the late 80s before going out of business. now PJH group – one of its original distributors – has brought the brand back, reviving its values of being British made, robust and high-quality craftsmanship. The new range features a

broad selection of kitchen furniture solutions to suit different budgets and specifications, including the one pictured below. At the designer end of the spectrum, ngi Design has introduced a minimalist kitchen range, Lucrezia by Cesar, which reflects its understated italian heritage. Combining warm wood shades with contemporary white, it comprises linear shapes and a mix of materials that allow for many different solutions. Part of ngi Design’s designer

The Viva concept from Cococucine adds to its portfolio of contemporary designer kitchens with italian quality and avant-garde design that is “revolutionary”, according to managing director Roger Lynn. Features includes a 60mm ultra-low plinth and a 2cm low-profile handle-less section as well as a new Antaro soft-close drawer system manufactured by Blum. And so to bed From beds and mattresses to lighting and other furniture, Mark Ludmon finds out about some of the newer ideas for bedroom interiors

M

arch is national Bed Month, when the UK’s bed manufacturers highlight the importance of getting the right furniture and design for your bedroom. The sleep Council, which organises the national awareness month, will focus on the ground-breaking study that found that, if people switched an uncomfortable old bed to a new one, they could get an average extra 42 minutes of sleep. With one in 10 Britons saying they suffer from insomnia over a year, the sleep Council also stresses the importance of creating “a restful sleeping environment” through bedroom design.

Beds For the look of natural wood, British design company ercol has introduced the new Bosco bedroom collection, made from oak

with a translucent “flat matt” finish and fine finger joint detailing. As well as beds with pre-slung slats, it includes wardrobes, generous storage chests and bedside cabinets, complementing the Bosco dining and cabinet furniture launched last year. They all feature the beautifully crafted finger joint detailing, rounded corners and easy-togrip integral handles. The striking headboard with slanted panels contrasts with the solid wood bed frame, and the simple sweeping lines strike a perfect balance between modern good looks and traditional craftsmanship. new beds from Love Your Home For Less include the Lola upholstered bed, which features piping detail along the headboard and footboard and stands on 17cm dark oak legs. Also new from Love Your Home For Less is the isabella upholstered bed, which

has a frame made from solid beech and a 155cm high headboard with individually sewn buttons. Furniture Designer David Linley, who has created bespoke furniture as part of bedroom interior design projects, has developed a range of classic bedroom furniture. They include the Reed Ottoman, which features elegant fluted walnut legs and can be upholstered in fabric or leather. it comes in three different sizes and two different shapes. Also from Linley is an elegant bedside table and a side table with a drawer and lower shelf. They are available in three choices of wood combinations including walnut with rosewood stringing, burr walnut inlay and satinwood banding. fabulous wooden floor in nicholas Kirkwood’s prestigious London shoe store has been finished and protected using Bona’s waterborne lacquers. The floor was designed by Richard Woods studio and installed and finished by wood flooring and furniture specialists, etloe, who consulted with interior fit out company, snake skin Jacket, over the most appropriate way to finish the surface.

Beautifully finished flooring

Richard Woods’ ‘wrong wood’ design was screen printed using oil based paints on to plywood strips which were then pinned and glued using Bona’s silane-based adhesive to a ply subfloor. gaps were filled using Bona’s gap Master (black) to ensure compatibility with the adhesive and top coat. This floor deserved a carefully considered lacquer specification to ensure an adequate level of surface protection and the right look. Bona’s technical team recommended using two coats of Bona Mega, followed by three coats of Bona Traffic – the company’s toughest lacquer – to protect the soft plywood flooring and the screen printed design. To achieve the required glossy look Bona Polish (gloss) was applied after the top coat of Bona Traffic lacquer had cured. A Bona spray Mop, the easy way to maintain a wooden floor and keep it looking as good as new, is being used for daily maintenance. etloe is now working with Richard Woods studio to develop a flooring product based on the specification for the nicholas Kirkwood store, which will allow their designs to be used more widely in commercial environments.

Mark Ludmon looks at the latest design ideas for bathrooms from showers to furniture

P

ractical concerns always need to be balanced with aesthetics when designing home interiors, and this is particularly the case with bathrooms. “Designers want to be able to specify stunning design without compromising on functionality,” says Vanessa Allan, marketing manager at British manufacturer samuel Heath. The company has launched a range of concealed showers that offer flexibility for designers but also use the latest thermostatic cartridge technology. They feature a new rough installation kit that is fully accessible for the front, providing a “pour forward” protection that reduces the risk of water damage by making plumbing and installation issues easy to spot and fix. Made with european brass, the showers have been hand-polished and plated in up to 34 individual processes for a flawless and durable finish. Finishes include stainless steel, chrome, polished nickel, matt black and antique gold.

Victoria-n from Roca

A new collection, the Barium 12 bespoke frameless shower enclosure, comes from The shower Lab to meet demand from designers looking for a contemporary look. Described as “dramatic”, it features 13

Kanuka from Moods Bathrooms stunning glass designs including the MesH modesty panel. The 10mm glass door is hinged from a fixed hinged panel, which is particularly useful if the wall is not entirely vertical as The shower Lab can specify a glass panel to a required angle. For tight spaces, Barium 12 is designed to allow the inline and return panels to sit on a halfheight wall so that a bath or vanity unit can be accommodated next to the showering area. Bette has introduced Bettefloor – a steel and enamel floor-level shower surface that

is a stylish and hygienic alternative to a tiled shower area. it is flat and angular, like a large tile, so fits perfectly into the overall tiling pattern and is permanently waterproof. it features an uninterrupted, gentle slope to a central outlet which has a cover that closes flush with the shower surface. Bettefloor comes in 48 different sizes and in a range of colours, including new white matt, to harmonise with tile and flooring. At KBB Birmingham in March, Kaldewei will showcase its coloured floor-level Conoflat shower tray which is available in 12 matt

shades to complement the latest tile colour trends. Made from 3.5mm steel enamel, it appears to be completely flat – a perfect fit with the current trend for floor-level, walk-in shower areas. Furnishing A new furnishing system has been developed by italian bathroom specialist glass using multi-functional, wall-hung modules for creating hamman spaces, shower areas and bath areas. Designed by LucidiPevere, it can make the shower area a more integrated part of the bathroom, t

The new 2012 Moods Bathrooms collection from PJH group includes the Kanuka bathroom suite that blends minimalist lines with sumptuous curves to create a bold and contemporary look. The organically-inspired design aims to satisfy one of the latest trends in mid-market bathroom design. As part of Clerkenwell Design Week in May, 12 new designs will be unveiled by italian bathroom and home specialist ex.t. it follows a new partnership with interior design company Plug in Design to become exclusive distributor in the UK and ireland for ex.t’s contemporary ceramics, bathroom furniture and other furniture and accessories. Described as “very on vogue”, the collection has elements of european design flowing throughout.

Osmos from glass Sanitaryware At KBB Birmingham, Twyford Bathrooms is launching the UK’s first truly rimless WC for the home, the Moda Rimfree, described as “one of the most notable landmarks in the evolution of WC design”. A new water distribution system, with self-draining jets at the back of the bowl releasing water round the whole bowl, means there is no need for a rim, making it easier to clean. Also at KBB Birmingham, Roca will showcase new products including the Dama-n range

of standard and compact WCs and basins alongside the matching Dama-n furniture which comes in dark or light textured wood as well as white or dark green PVC finishes. it will also be launching the in-Tank Meridian WC which incorporates the tank in its interior without the need for a concealed cistern. For small bathrooms, Roca has developed the Mini – a compact and stylish combination of furniture, basin and mirror, or mirrored cabinet, made from melamine-faced chipboard and finished in white, oak, wenge or grey. t

BIID starts Interiors UK with a bang Inspiration from designers Dan Hopwood and John Evans

T

he British institute of interior Design (BiiD) kickstarted this year’s interiors UK event at the neC in Birmingham with two thoughtprovoking talks playing to packed house of more than 100 designers in the show’s dedicated seminar theatre. BiiD members travelling early sunday morning for the event were treated to a networking breakfast hosted by Kensington Home Technology, followed by two inspiring talks from Dan Hopwood, BiiD’s head of continuing professional development, and BiiD member John evans. in his talk called “Confessions of an interior Designer”, Dan Hopwood provided a sometimes serious and often funny insight into his company’s major projects, outlining some important trade secrets and sharing the ups and downs of how he achieves the finished result. He also considered the alternatives to fast-changing fashions in interior design, convincing the audience of the necessity of using an interior designer.

John evans then spoke on “The path to professionalism”. John cast a critical eye over his own career path, outlining how professionalism has helped his business evolve, explaining why it is integral to the success of any interior firm and looking at how the membership of the BiiD is key to this professionalism. His discussion proved a huge success with the captivated audience keen to ask questions, and many queuing after the seminar to hear more. “it was great to see so many members at interiors UK,” commented Louise nornes, the BiiD’s marketing assistant. “Both talks proved extremely popular with many designers travelling from the West Midlands, but also from London and further afield to hear Dan and John speak. Our thanks also go to industry partner member Kensington Home Technology for hosting the pre-talk breakfast.” More information on forthcoming BiiD hosted seminars can be found on the website at www.biid.org.uk.

Balcony Systems launches DIY self-cleaning glass solution Balcony systems, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of glass balustrading, Juliet balconies and curved sliding patio doors, has launched its new Balconano self-application coating process that transforms ordinary glass into selfcleaning glass. Balconano is to glass like Teflon is to your frying pan. Balconano is a hard, durable protective coating that covers the pitted surface of glass and other ceramic or silica based surfaces, making it smooth and water-repellent. Dirt and other deposits cannot cling to the glass surface and either wash away easily or are simply cleaned with water and a cloth, without the need to use harsh chemical cleaners. Available in an easy-to-apply “wet wipe” sachet packaging for easy storage and use, the coating can be applied to kitchen tops, sinks, shower enclosures, ceramic tiles and many other areas. “Having achieved tremendous success and high levels of customer satisfaction with our pre-applied revolutionary coating, it was clear there was demand from our customers, dealers and installers for an answer to protecting already-installed glass and other elements,” says Balcony managing director effi Wolff. “Balconano offers an eco-friendly, durable and convenient solution.” Call 01342 410411, email enquiries@balconette.co.uk or visit www.balconano.com.

Zip HydroTap moves into busy B&B stowe Farm bed and breakfast in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, is a busy family-run business that often caters for up to eight people at a time with only one kettle to service the breakfast room as well as the family home. Owner Jo Belcher (pictured left) turned to Zip Heaters for an instant boiling water solution that would help to serve breakfast quickly and conveniently. “Before our HydroTap was installed, we had to reboil the kettle numerous times in one breakfast sitting,” says Jo. “i knew that this wasn’t environmentally friendly at all and that it was increasing my monthly fuel bills too. A friend recommended that i purchase an instant boiling water tap and when i discovered that Zip Heaters offer a HydroTap which delivers instant filtered boiling and chilled water in one tap, i knew this would be perfect for our requirements.” A site investigation revealed the guest house was in a hard-water area so, for the bed and breakfast to benefit fully from a new HydroTap, an optional Zip FL3000 filter would need to be added to the under-counter system to combat the effects of limescale. Zip also offers comprehensive service and maintenance contracts. Call Zip on 0845 6024533 or vixist www.zipheaters.co.uk.
