BIID Launches Professional Pathway The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) has introduced the BIID Professional Pathway – a new qualification which will, for the first time, provide a national, professional standard for interior designers

“T

he biid Professional Pathway is the most exciting and significant development in interior design education for many years,” explains Sue Timney, President of the biid. “Until now, anyone has been able to call themselves an interior designer, regardless of qualifications, experience or proven talent. From now on, the biid Professional Pathway will set a new, rigorous standard for professional competence.” The biid has worked closely with designers from commercial and residential fields, leading design educators and other industry professionals to develop the biid Professional Pathway.

Comprising five distinct modules – design Process; Communication & Presentation; Construction, Materials, Manufacture & Sustainability; Professional Practice, and Final Project – the biid Professional Pathway is designed to be undertaken whilst the candidate is working as an interior designer. This allows the use of knowledge

© AMeliA TroUbridge

and skills gained in everyday practice to evidence professional competence. The biid Professional Pathway also offers flexibility with different entry points that recognise the qualifications and experience interior designers have already gained. interior designers, design practices and specifiers of interior design services will all benefit from the introduction of the biid Professional Pathway. it bridges the gap for interior designers between education and achieving full professional standing. Taking part in the biid Professional Pathway also consolidates and validates the skills of self-taught designers and offers a clear distinction between professionals and hobbyists. Candidates will be able to certify their professional competence, demonstrating that they have met national standards. Meanwhile, design practice employers will have a national benchmark to track the progress of their employees. The biid Professional Pathway will also provide clients with confidence that the designer they

Sue Timney, biid President have hired meets the highest professional standards and is equipped with the skills, knowledge and creativity required to carry out a brief. Entry to the BIID Professional Pathway is free as part of a BIID Associate Membership. If the candidate is employed by a BIID Design Practice, they are entitled to a 25% discount on their annual membership rate. More details on the BIID Professional Pathway are available at www.biid.org.uk.

Clerkenwell Design Week Preview From the 21st to the 23rd May, the fourth annual Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW) will welcome over 150 UK and world-wide designers and manufacturers to showcase their latest designs against the extraordinary backdrop of historic Clerkenwell

W

ith only three days in which to take everything in, you’re going to need a very well organised itinerary!

In addition to the fifty-strong community of furniture showrooms, CDW’s exhibition venues represent centuries of the area’s history. The Farmiloe Building, a former Victorian merchants’ warehouse, will play host to high-profile international brands, and the 12th century crypt and garden of the Priory of the Order of St John will act as the hub for interior decoration trends, featuring names such as Ochre, Sé London, and the young vibrant furniture brand from Portugal, Ginger & Jagger. The House of Detention, a subterranean Victorian former prison, will again come to life as the festival’s hotspot for emerging creativity and innovation, with both new beginnings and welcome returns among this year’s exhibitors. Evil Robot will be

showcasing new work alongside other cutting-edge designers including James Tattersall, Fred and Juul, Freyja Sewell, Regina Heinz and Foreign Bear Studio, and London-based furniture designer and maker Alexander Mueller will be showing his latest projects. The show will also premier Viennabased designer, Philipp Aduatz. Debate is integral to the A&D community! This year, CDW focuses on the folly of recent education reforms to remove design from the UK curricula. Editor of onoffice James McLachlan and designers MARK are curating an event to highlight the importance of creative thinking in schools, inviting established designers and architects to contribute an object they made during their time at school, and share how their academic learning influenced their career. Renowned for its installations and cultural projects, CDW will bring the district to life with inspirational creative thinking. Internationally acclaimed lighting designer

Sharon Marston will create a unique one-off installation in the loggia entrance of the Priory of the Order of St John. A magical installation will envelope the space in a dazzling torrent of hand crafted woven brass mesh and fibre optic filaments, characteristic of Marston’s stunning chandeliers. There’s far more going on than we have room to mention here! Check out www. clerkenwelldesignweek.com and follow on @clerkenwell13 #CDW13

A Week in the Lives of David Long & Gaynor Pharoah

David Long and Gaynor Pharoah have spent their lives at the forefront of design, and started a new venture launching ‘Luxurious Living’ 18 months ago, presenting Coleccion Alexandra exclusively to the UK. Gaynor talks us through a busy week!

in.Their Lives : 19 Tuesday Living in the Yorkshire Wolds is a joy, and the journey to work in the morning takes, on a good day, just over half an hour through the glorious countryside. Looking at the rolling fields and the changing of the seasons is a wonderful start to the day and always soothes the spirits at the end of a hectic day. As Tuesday is the first day of our work week, it is always busy sorting though emails from the website with requests for catalogues, product pricing and registering for newsletters, which usually takes all day to get through. every day there is a steady stream of requests from the website and Lucinda and Kayleigh spend the mornings updating the database, sending out catalogues and following up to say hello to everyone. We have only just launched our new website, which has taken months to put together, so we are excited with the reaction and feedback we are getting. Our next thrust is our On Line Product resource

Library for specifiers, which we are now working on. Whilst catching up with information requests carries on, David and i have our weekly Marketing Morning – planning features and editorials, upcoming exhibitions, and our eMarketing campaigns of our lovely eNewsletters which we strive to make stunning to look at and really informative too. Wednesday it has been a busy start to the year. January and February are invariably full on months for us. We had a terrific show in Paris at Maison&Objet, following on with Cevisama in valencia, where we had stunning room sets of the Bath Collection, and we’re busy preparing for salone internazionale in Milan. We were delighted with the reaction to the stands which showcased our latest collections and the launch of the

The Leonid Collection extends into the office

20 : in.Their Lives evolution Contemporary Collection and the heritage Traditional Collection; the new furniture catalogues are some of the best we have ever seen. We have been working hard on making contact with the numerous enquiries whose contact details we took and have a diary stretching into April for visits to present the furniture and bathroom collections. Wednesdays are a key day for chatting to people and sending out emails with information about the new pieces and we have created a Wednesday Workshop where designers can chat to us on skype or FaceTime about their projects and the products they have selected and we can work with them on putting together schedules and samples and offering other pieces that may be suitable to complete the project. We’ve a collection of over 2000 pieces of not only furniture and the bathroom collection, but lighting, accessories, textiles and rugs; specifiers are so appreciative to have a little help and it is really enjoyable working with them. We loving making friendships and helping with sizings, working on bespoke pieces and seeing the schemes that designers are putting together using our pieces and the transformations created with different finishes. Thursday Thursdays and Fridays we devote to projects. Today we have a designer coming to visit the showroom with their developer client with whom they have worked for a number of years and who is excited to look at something completely different. We will pick them up at the station in York. Our showrooms are just round the corner, overlooking the city’s roman Walls and the castellated round Tower which will be

We like to travel to valencia at the end of the month and arrange for designers to visit the factory. it is a wonderful experience to see the craftsmen whose specialist skills in leather have been passed down the generations and are now reworked into contemporary designs. The highlight of the trip is always the lunch or dinner reception at Maria’s home which is a stunning

showcase of the collections! To be able to spend a few hours touching and feeling and sitting on the pieces and having an understanding of what has inspired these collections is a wonderful experience. This Friday however Maria is coming to London and we are spending the weekend with her. Our time will be taken up with hours of chatting about business, the projects that are moving forward – from 5*

hotel projects to a super yacht and work on that client’s home – and meeting a dear client who owns three luxury hotels in London and whose new home in Portland Place we have been helping her with for the past year. Saturday Our York showroom is always busy on saturdays with at least two appointments in the morning and afternoon of architects

26 : in.Their Lives and designers who travel from far and wide to see us, not just to chat over the collections, but often to take the opportunity to have a weekend break in York, which is a fantastic place. i have been working and living here for eight years now and there still isn’t a day that i don’t look at the York Minster and the cobbled streets in the shambles and love being here. Today though we are going to enjoy London, staying at the Wyndham hotel which feels very much home from home to us, we love it there, and after breakfast in our room we wander down the Kings road into sloane square where we stop for coffee and wait for our son Danny to arrive to spend the day together. This will be the first weekend we have not booked the theatre or something at the Albert hall for the sunday, we are going to relax and enjoy the Marina and spa at the hotel for most of sunday. Sunday A day of much needed rest! At home we try to get out for walks with our three little shitzus, and living in the Wolds we enjoy walking in some spectacular scenery. Today though after a morning in the spa, having enjoyed the sauna and a lovely swim, we will visit the v&A and enjoy a lovely afternoon tea listening to the piano. Monday The showroom is closed on Mondays, so we are able to relax at home, planning our work for the week; evernotes syncs to all our computers, and the staff have shared files, a godsend in every way. Week planned for the coming week, now we can enjoy looking forward to the unexpected!

Formica Group Introduce The Axiom Worktop Range The role of the kitchen is changing: they are more spacious, brighter and attention is paid to the form as well as the function

T

he kitchen has become a social hub, a living space rather than just a place where food is prepared. With open plan living becoming more popular, the choice of worktop colours, textures and patterns has never been more important. As architects, specifiers and kitchen designers look to inspire with stylish and contemporary kitchen worktop options, they require a variety of designs and finishes to stand out from the crowd.

Puregrain

With these considerations in mind Formica Group has introduced its Axiom速 worktop range. A complete choice of worktops, splashbacks and upstands, Axiom速 allows

you to create the latest looks inspired by the European trends, whether it be a more traditional or a contemporary style.

A Question Of Taste Whether you’re entertaining friends, impressing work colleagues, or relaxing with your partner, a well-designed dining room or dining area adds flavour to your menu!

I

n the same way you wouldn’t leave the choice of ingredients to the last minute, you’d not leave the room setting to chance. A beautiful dining area sets the scene long before the food arrives, and adds to the enjoyment whether it’s simply soup for lunch or a seven course dinner banquet. And when your sitting room and dining room share floorspace, or your whole living area is open plan, it’s time to become very inventive! “For the dining room our clients are looking for classic pieces in solid, natural wood in timeless shapes,” described Ryan McNeish, Head of Design with Halo. “People are not afraid of mixing elements and looking for vintage pieces alongside well-made contemporary pieces. Our Drift dining table is very popular, handmade in wild grained solid oak with a kiln-bleached finish, this centrepiece table is solid and generously proportioned with clean, unfussy lines. It is an excellent example of a piece that will sit well with a variety of looks. Our clients choose natural wood because it acts as a perfect backdrop – they can then create an individual look, adding colour and texture as well as other more personal style elements.

A room is never just a room. “The dining room is where many nostalgic family memories are made – it’s where we all want to have Christmas dinner!” claimed Charles Martyn Sowter, of Jonathan Charles Fine Furniture in Sheffield. “We see many projects come through from interior designers doing whole house schemes and often the dining room is the focal point. Memories are made of this! Biedermeier from Jonathan Charles Neil Partridge, Co-Director of NGI Design, “so try to choose complementary pieces to create a cohesive design. The most successful open plan layouts use a design theme or colour palette throughout the different zones to create a sense of unity. Accentuate your design by choosing cushions, throws and rugs in complementary patterns or shades. You can also use vases, mirrors and picture frames to really tie the whole look together.” A visual break between the different spaces is ideal, “so you could opt for a L-shaped layout, or add a kitchen island to create a barrier between the living, dining and kitchen areas,” recommended Neil. “If you’re fretting about dirty pots and pans being on show, a raised edge can be added to the outer worktop to keep this hidden away!” Creating a seamless integration between

SieMatic BeauxArts: seamless integration between kitchen and living spaces kitchen and living spaces is extremely popular, agreed Bernard Otulakowski, Managing Director of SieMatic UK. “Designers can select discreet cabinetry that harmonises with the living area and is capable of turning kitchen islands into decorative pieces of furniture. Utilising flexible open shelves for the display of decorative objects can also help to create this move from one area to another,” described Bernard. “To create a relaxed kitchen living area it’s important to create a dialogue between the kitchen and living spaces. One of the most effective and

contemporary ways of doing this is by using open display shelving. Start by using the shelving within the kitchen area and extend this into the open living spaces. You can place your kitchen gadgets on the shelving in the kitchen area, and place books and decorative vases towards the other end. This will blend the definition between the two zones and create one harmonious living space.” Kitchens and bathrooms may, according to estate agents, be what sell a house, but when you’re living there it’s the sitting and dining rooms that do the talking!

alking to manufacturers and designers, we’ve noticed there is no single trend for bathrooms – and how could there be with so many different types of homes, and even more types of householders, all with their own sense of style? “Today, more than ever, we see people taking inspiration from many different influences, all which drive trends,” said Drummond Shaw, Director of Drummonds. “There are some really creative designers and clients out there, who are confidently taking great products and mixing up

styles. They don’t feel compelled to match styles throughout or re-create certain uniform ‘looks’. Nowadays, people want their bathroom to make a more personal statement, based around important ‘focus pieces’ and distinctive finishes. It’s an individualised approach which is becoming ever more important throughout today’s interiors.” Drummonds’ baths make a great centrepiece for this eclectic look, combining classic forms and bespoke finishes. “These include handpainting in any colour as well as burnished metal, metal cladding and

Bette Silhouette

40 : in.VOGUE our newly commissioned fine art finishes by Costello & Welch,” added Drummond. “These range from specialist paint effects to a new textured concrete finish which perfectly bridges the gap between traditional and contemporary style.” Whilst the concrete adds a fantastic urban yet decadent style, the home spa look is holding its own in the aspirational stakes. “Many consumers would like a sleek, spa-like bathroom and there are some key products that can help to achieve this look and quality of experience,” claimed Sven Rensinghoff, head of marketing at Bette. “Enamelled steel flush to floor shower areas, like the BetteFloor, that give a ‘wetroom’ look without any of the associated potential problems are growing in popularity because they are permanently waterproof, durable and easy to clean, as well as being accessible for all.” “We are seeing a steady increase in demand for our enamelled steel baths too,” he added. “Their superior durability, stability and light reflecting qualities, together with new advances in their formation and enamelling mean you can offer clients baths with flowing lines and minimal rim widths, like the BetteLux. We are also seeing more bathroom designers add some statement colour to the bathroom – using baths like the freestanding BetteSilhouette bicolour, which has an interior of white gloss and an exterior in a choice of colours, including new violet.” David Osborne, Managing Director of Roman, agreed that when it comes to bathroom design, the key trend is to create a spa-like sanctuary. “Indulgent products which look great are the key trend,” he said. “So it’s all about spacious enclosures, walk-ins and

Bespoke Sculptures from Roman wet-rooms. The styling of these products is very minimalist, with a frameless finish and clear 10mm thick glass. Likewise, low level trays have become a must to reinforce this designer finish. “One of the other trends we have seen as a manufacturer is towards bespoke products. Many of the specifiers we are working with

They want to create a specification that totally works in their design space. We launched a Project Specification Guide in response to this and it allows specifiers to pick and choose every part of their showering specification.”

The recent ISH expo in Frankfurt left visitors buzzing with inspiration. Rachel Martin, Director of Merchandising at C.P. Hart, noted that technology is big news when it comes to the bathroom. “Hansgrohe, Dornbracht, Toto , Viega and Grohe are among the key designers investing heavily in making technology in the bathroom more accessible and affordable,” she said. “Specifically,

44 : in.VOGUE Hansgrohe has introduced the Select range which incorporates a “push button” mechanism which alters the flow of both fixed and hand-held shower heads. In terms of finishes and materials, gloss is becoming less prominent with Kerlite taking centre stage. This modern material gives a matt, almost stone-like finish and works well on a wide range of bathroom furniture. Other popular textures and finishes include linen prints and wood-grain, while grey is definitely the colour of choice”. Technology in bathrooms is usually discreet, with complex temperature control systems hiding behind very simple to use buttons! “Despite the growth of hi-tech gadgets for the home, we are noticing that consumers are seeking bathroom products with intuitive technology to make life easier,” said Geoff Wickett, Hansgrohe’s Marketing Manager. “The new Raindance Select programme from Hansgrohe doesn’t come with a complex set of user instructions, but simply in the form of an elegant button which controls the water source with one click. Users need to simply click the Select button, either on the shower itself to change spray mode, or on the shower control in order to switch between shower heads or to the bath filler.” The bathroom industry is entering a period of design innovation particularly in the development of more hygienic WCs, explained Rob Jull Managing Director of RAK UK. “For the first time in many decades the traditional toilet has attracted the attention of many of the industry’s top designers to produce toilets which are genuinely more suited to the needs of the present day,” he claimed. “From our early involvement in rimless WC

Flush to floor: Bette demand some four years ago it is clear that the new design process would be a great benefit to both private home and the commercial applications, so we became one of the first in the market following the original demand of HTM64 for full rimless pans,” Rob added. “A fully open rim makes the flushing and cleaning of a WC pan completely transparent and must be a good thing in the long run. Once we all get used to our toilets looking slightly different it will surely become the norm throughout the industry.” Space-saving is still a consideration, whether because of the smaller footprint of some new homes, or as additional bathrooms are built in to existing bedrooms. As consumers become more discerning,

seeking quality products that are well designed but with an affordable price tag, manufacturers such as Kaldewei are pulling out all the stops to develop products that offer unprecedented value in terms of design and performance. Kaldewei’s new Cayono bath is part of their Advantage (entry level) product segment. “Its clever design features space saving outer dimensions with a generous interior,” described Angela Ortmann-Torbett, Kaldewei Sales Director, West Europe. “The completely flat base is available with antislip enamel finishing allowing safe footing for comfortable showering.” With seemingly no limits on the choice of materials and styles for bathrooms, you can really clean up!

Julia Brendel enjoys the sculpted feel of different textures with traditionally woven fabrics

Pinch of Salt Home are experiencing a strong sense of nostalgia There is a clear trend in which New Media and Technology is becoming far more involved – digital printing is spreading from clothing to walls, tiles and sofas. “This technique enables a new freedom of design whilst remaining environmentally friendly,” said Julia Brendel, whose designer fabrics and luxurious textiles include cushions, lampshades, bed throws and tablecloths. “Most of my fabrics are traditionally woven at the moment and this remains a conscious

decision as I like the sculpted feel of different textures that digital printing can imitate for the eye, but can’t for touch. It also suits my current collections when the connection between the finished product and good craftsmanship is so obvious. “It’s clear that hands were involved in the process, not just computer drives. Furthermore, there is a degree of continuity and history in creating designs in the 21st

Century on looms that were used for the same process over a hundred years ago for other designers. New technology is, however, here to stay and I look forward to seeing just how far I can push it forward!” Liz Cann, Design Director at Sanderson, Zoffany, Morris & Co. is also enjoying the freedom that digital printing brings. “Whimsical prints such as Jubilee Square and large scale feature prints such Sussex Downs, both from our new Designer Options collections are very popular at the moment as they offer an alternative to traditional floral motifs and appeal to younger customers,” she claimed.

Two of our most popular print cloths for curtains are a beautiful spun linen/viscose cloth that has the look of linen, but without the creasing, and cotton satin. Both these qualities drape beautifully, a factor that is very important for many curtain makers.” Silk weaves such as damasks and taffetas always look luxurious and beautiful but can be very expensive. “Many mills have now developed polyester yarns which, when woven on silk looms, look almost identical to silk but at a much more affordable price. They also have the advantage of being immune to sunlight, unlike silk,” Liz explained. “Wool is another popular trend as it offers warmth and texture and also drapes extremely well, even some upholstery weights. It is a quality that works well in both traditional and contemporary interiors.” You’d expect films and music to influence interiors, but so does economics! Whilst hemlines may follow the stockmarket – being lower in times of recession – this is reflected in decor too; in this downturn we all crave the ‘good old times’! “In the current economic climate there is a strong sense of nostalgia when it comes to fabric designs,” observed Sarah CampbellLloyd of Pinch of Salt Home. “Floral prints and patchwork quilts are definitely back in fashion, providing a homey feel. Lots of colourful cushions lying on the sofa, or the bed add style to any space, whilst also making rooms more uplifting and tasty.

They are preferred over their modern counterparts for their ability to add a touch of class and luxury to most interiors. Classic velvets are being used for both modern and traditional applications, showing the need for a more refined, sophisticated look even in contemporary settings.” For durability and both tradition and cuttingedge fashion, leather ticks every box! “Neutral shades continue to play a very important role in leather and creating accents,” observed Chirag Patel, Managing Director of CrestJMT Leather. “Trends in upholstery leather continue to change and shift every year. The changes are often subtle, but collectively can create a different look and feel. Perfectly Balanced

Kitchen Designer of the Year Colin Wong tells us ‘how I met the brief’ with his distinctive brand of contemporary design, influenced by feng shui, with this beautiful Edinburgh project

A

gainst the dramatic backdrop of the Tower of London, a hush in anticipation as the tenth annual Designer Kitchen & Bathroom Awards are announced.

Moments later Colin Wong is beside awards host and media personality Oliver Heath, displaying an award for Kitchen Designer of the Year! Rewind to early 2012 and Colin is being

briefed by a professional couple who are building their dream home on Lanark Road in the south west Edinburgh suburb of Colinton. They want to make their kitchen the social hub of their new home, to make the most of their natural surroundings, and to create clean lines without looking stark or as if the space takes itself too seriously. The sleek, spacious and modern new-build had five bedrooms, an established garden, a movie room and a rather awkward kitchen space, which included a separate kitchen, utility room and dining room. “At this stage, I felt these rooms were at odds with the open, contemporary feel of the rest of the house. And there was simply no ‘wow factor’. The garden stole all the glory!” Colin explains. “Initially puzzled by the initial spatial layout, it was explained to me that there was a major steel post off centre to the space, and the walls had been positioned to conceal it.’’ “At first, I, like everyone else involved with the project, saw the steel post as a restrictive element to be worked around, and became rather obsessed by it – man versus post. But then, after some time at the drawing board, I really felt that I wanted in fact to work with it. I felt it needed some companionship to create the symmetry needed in the space. Post or no post, this was what the space was asking for.”

in.BRIEF : 55 And the clients knew Colin had nailed it. “This was the catalyst that allowed me to transform the fractured space into a bold, bright, open-plan space.” From that point on, the post instead of being hidden, became an integral part of an island ‘close’ to the centre – but now the heart and second focal point of the space, the other

being the incredible view. Bespoke stud supports, shallower than the depth of the island furniture itself, gave an impression of the island floating and offset the strength of its supports, as well as echoing the position of the house – balanced on a slope. The supports created the effect of a commercial ‘chef’s pass’ for an air of theatre

in the style of the best restaurants. They also acted as a picture-frame for the ‘painting’ that was the stunning view to the tiered garden behind, visible through a series of glazed sliding doors. It was important that the design complemented this main existing focal point, without trying to compete or detracting from it.

Colin is drawn to designing items in sets of three

56 : in.BRIEF

The island has the impression of floating The furniture for the sink run of units was aligned to complement the island, and the imposing tall appliance bank that usually overpowers a kitchen was recessed into the wall to avoid being too dominating or creating one focal point too many. The view could be enjoyed in full from the comfy seating and a fun dining area. It was also reflected in a mirrored splashback behind the sink station to the breakfast bar on the island, where diners would be sitting with their backs to the window. This

mirroring also added to the sense of light and space. The principle of symmetry carries through in every detail, including the two sets of draining grooves either side of the sink, rather than a single set. Colin’s design ethos is that the space itself is more important than the designer or the client and must always be considered first before adapting it to the people who will inhabit it. Every space has an optimum layout. This scenario was no different in that the optimum spatial layout was created,

For the high-end kitchen The philosophy of a modern kitchen: A modern kitchen is full of contradictions. It must be multifunctional and have an a esthetic clean design. Often it is placed in an open environment partly functioning as a kitchen and partly as a living room/social space. Equipped with the necessary appliances, but at the same time it should take up limited space. And last but not least it must fit the user’s needs for functionality and ergonomics. By adding movement to your kitchen these contradictions can be eliminated. Movement via linear actuator technology can hide appliances not in use thereby creating clean multifunctional surfaces, such as lift kitchen tables to ergonomic correct working heights, or bring down cupboards to reach tableware. There are endless possibilities when adding electric movement.

58 : in.BRIEF then the details were tailored to suit the client’s tastes. Colin’s design incorporates some of his design beliefs which see him drawn to designing items in sets of three – which can be seen by the pendant lighting, bar stools and tall units – a ‘magic’ number in design that, according to Colin, always looks better than two or four. A feature colour of burnt orange was set against a neutral palette of soft whites and greys, with a splash of mulberry too at the request of the couple.

Whilst it is hard to pin Colin down to any specific style of designing, his portfolio is peppered with designs that show a strong contemporary style with sleek Germanic lines and gentle curves utilising robust, bordering on sometimes industrial, materials. He also likes to source bespoke ‘shabby’ pieces of furniture or lighting to complete the look. For this project, he used appliances by Neff, a Smeg sink with taps by Franke, furniture by Haecker of Germany, work surfaces by Silestone and paint by Farrow & Ball. The

plain porcelain tile flooring was chosen for its ‘blank canvas’ effect, to prevent it from becoming a feature in its own right. Colin credits a time of global travel and living overseas for giving him an international outlook and style in his work. As a resident of Canada and Hong Kong he carried out design and building project-management for retail, restaurants and nightclubs as well as residential projects. Travel and food are running themes in his career, as Colin has also owned

On his return to Edinburgh, Colin set up a design and renovation company to undertake the purchase and refurbishment of period properties in the city. He then set up kitchen design studio Development Direct in 2002 to work with architects, interior designers, developers, retail and residential clients, providing full in-house design, project management and turnkey service. In 2006 he added a newbuild division which specialises in the design and build of bespoke new homes. His signature style is also influenced by the principles of feng shui, part of his Chinese heritage. Feng shui, translated directly into English as ‘wind-water’, is an ancient Chinese system of auspicious orientation, originally applied to spiritual spaces but now also used in the home and places of business. It centres on the idea of energy flow or qi riding on the wind but being retained by water. Qi translates as ‘breath’ and is pronounced ‘chi’. In the Lanark Road design, feng shui elements included bringing the outdoors inside through the mirroring and framing of the garden, increasing natural light with an additional slot window, and setting the units back to create room for the dining area to breathe. The result is a perfectly balanced, bright and energetic living space. This all led to the design, as part of a portfolio of recent work, earning Colin the accolade of Kitchen Designer of the Year in the latest Designer Kitchen & Bathroom Awards.

The view meant that initially the garden stole all the glory “It was a privilege to have my work seen and appreciated by such leaders in UK design. I live, love and breathe design, from the big idea to the smallest detail – it’s always at the forefront of my business,” said

Colin. Most importantly though, the clients were delighted with their new kitchen space, which balanced simplicity with sophistication in Colin’s inimitable style.

years it took to develop his first vacuum cleaner, James was also battling to convince other manufacturers to embrace his new technology – and then protect his invention when they copied it. He has a reputation for taking risks and using frustration as a fuel for creativity and solving problems.

Thomas Heatherwick owns Heatherwick Studio which he founded in 1994. described by Sir Terence Conran as a “Leonardo da Vinci of our times’, he is one of the country’s most original creative talents. He has produced everything from sculptural chairs forged from the world’s largest aluminium extruder and the stunning Olympic cauldron to a bridge that rolls open and closed and an exuberant seed bank, ‘hairy’ with fibre-optic lights (the award-winning UK Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai Expo).

“Our Honorary Fellowships are incredibly important to the institute,” says Sue Timney, biid President. “They provide an opportunity to recognise those who have inspired and influenced designers today. As an institute we genuinely value the amazing originality, flair and creativity that make Thomas and James such eminent and respected figures in the design world. We are delighted to confer these Honorary Fellowships in recognition of their immense achievements. it’s also a mark of our own stature and progress in recent times that, in return, such great designers can accept our invitation and be a part of the institute in the years ahead.”
