Welcome to the May issue of in.Design!
Spring is in the air, with summer close on its tail (or so I’m told, we’re still all wrapped up against the cold here!) and to celebrate we’re looking at Outdoor Furniture in our in.Vogue feature on p22, and also speak to Rebecca Le Noel, co-founder of unique upholstered outdoor furniture company Coco Wolf, in Week in the Life (p08).
We get back to work in our second in.Vogue feature on p16 which focuses on Breakout Spaces, and stay with the work theme for in.Brief, where we take a look at The Office Group’s flexible workspace in Angel Square, Islington, created for them by interior architects and designers Shed.
Our Prize Draw is back (p36), and this month we have two copies of JOI-Design’s book, 101 Hotel Rooms, Volume 2 – regular readers may remember we gave away some copies of the first Volume a little while back.
The BIID have written a really useful guide for home owners (see p34), leading them through the sometimes fraught journey of choosing an interior designer. The guide points out the advantages of using a qualified interior designer, and outlines aspects such as contracts and payments – it’ll be a useful tool for both sides!
And last but not least, May brings with it Clerkenwell Design Week, a fantastic event which showcases massive creativity – maybe we’ll see you there?
If you’d like to let our readers know what you’ve been up to, please get in touch, we’d love to hear from you!

Seventh Heaven! The 24th – 26th May will see Clerkenwell play host to surprising and delightful collaborations for the seventh edition of Clerkenwell Design Week
‘C
DW Presents’ will bring six specially commissioned public installations to the area, each in context and offering a fresh insight into design and materials. The Fringe, sponsored by Greene & Co, gives visitors a chance to explore the rich creativity within Clerkenwell, as local practices, businesses and organisations throw open their doors. Integral to the festival’s success, the CDW Presents programme offers an insight into temporary architecture, materials and the use of public space. Partnering exciting architecture and design practices with suppliers of innovative products makes new connections and delivers inspiring results: free for all to experience, this is where CDW can flex its creative muscle to show new approaches and fresh ideas in key locations as part of the visitor experience. St John’s Square will be home to the Museum of Making, a pavilion of making in Clerkenwell – across the past, present and future. The deconstructed Swedish barn designed by White Arkitekter, sponsored by EQUITONE, will host a selection of fascinating artefacts from Clerkenwell’s history as a centre for making and craftsmanship from the Museum of London; alongside a collection of tools for contemporary design. Contemporary design curator Pete
Collard is responsible for all the content of the Museum of Making, and there will be workshops and demonstrations by The Goldsmiths’ Centre, Craft Central and Thomas Matthews, held in the pavilion so visitors can be hands-on with making and learning. Billboards by Giles Miller Studio, sponsored by British Ceramic Tile will help guide the way through CDW for visitors this year. Taking shape as a series of installations, the component parts have been specially made in collaboration with British Ceramic Tile.

A Week In The Life Of Rebecca Le Noel Luxury outdoor furniture brand Coco Wolf was founded in 2014 by sisters Rebecca Le Noel and Claudine Davis and their partners. Creative Director Rebecca talks us through a busy week – and some lovely meals! Monday I wake up and head to a Pilates class, which gets me invigorated and motivates me for the week ahead. After Pilates I usually swing by Planet Organic for my daily juice and coffee. This week is London Design Week at Chelsea Harbour which has provided us
with opportunities to showcase Coco Wolf’s new and unique designs. We recently did a photoshoot with luxury textile brand Holland & Sherry, which lead to two pieces of Coco Wolf furniture being displayed in their window at Chelsea Harbour. The Justinano arm chairs have been fitted with removable covers made from Holland & Sherry fabric.

10 : in.HER LIFE Throughout each day there is plenty of admin; price requests, quotes for designers, setting up trade accounts among other tasks. I love to cook and am always keen to try out new cookbooks and recipes for my partner James and me. On tonight’s menu is monkfish curry with cauliflower rice from the Deliciously Ella cookbook. We then sit down to a few episodes of House of Cards before heading to bed. Tuesday Our sales rep and I have three appointments today. Our first two appointments are with interior design companies, and the third with yacht designers. It is important for me to attend these meetings, as I get to know our clients, their requests, concerns and even gain ideas – their knowledge in the industry is invaluable. We always bring one of our favourite chairs along to the meeting to show how it is constructed and to educate people on the innovation of our product. Each appointment usually lasts up to an hour and in between meetings we are grabbing coffee or lunch on the run.

I have a face time call with Adam, who is in charge of design and development at the factory where they are showing me a new way of attaching our slip-on covers to a custom size order. A decision needs to be made before the covers go into production tomorrow morning. I must admit that I was sceptical at the new way of attaching the covers, however the new design improves the way covers hold on to the furniture making it far more streamlined with openings almost impossible to detect – you would never know it is a slip-on cover.

12 : in.HER LIFE Lounge showroom is a stone’s throw away from the Chelsea Harbour Design Centre and provides interior designers with a hub to view their seven companies and the other collaborated brands. We take photos of their outdoor space for our reference, before we make plans of how to transform it into a tranquil setting that fits with the other brands. From midday I am at the Best and Lloyd showroom with the owner, Sam, a great friend. He is moving out of his showroom on the Kings Road and into the Fromental showroom at the Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour, and has asked for help in his lighting display. I pick out the most eyecatching lamps and create a display that pops with colour, so the lamps fit within the Fromental setting. We then spend the rest of the evening packaging up his latest collection of lights for the move. Wednesday evening I cook a new recipe from Yotam Ottolenghi’s Nopi cookbook – lamb rump with vanilla-braised chicory and sorrel pesto. Thursday I wake up early to get ready for my gym class and cycle down through Hyde Park to Core Collective in Kensington. After my class I grab a juice and walk back through Hyde Park, and chat to my sister Claudine about our schedules for the day ahead. We put a plan together of what our vision is going to be for the Covet Lounge showroom outdoor area, following yesterday’s meeting. We then head off to the nursery to buy plants and containers for the showroom; back at Covet Lounge, we prep the outside area for the delivery.

Fire It Up Designer fireplaces that can be tailored to suit any space are becoming the ideal interior accessory for the modern home
S
mart Fire UK, the UK’s sole distributor of EcoSmart Fire, provides elegant fires that are fuelled entirely by bio-ethanol, which means they need no chimney, flue or extraction system. They provide energy efficient and cost effective indoor heating as well as warmth, ambience and a stunning focal point. The EcoSmart Bio-Ethanol Fire Box has become a popular choice with architects and interior designers looking for versatility and flexibility whilst designing their own fireplace.
For an alternative to the Fire Box, the EcoSmart Bio Ethanol Burners are the obvious choice for creating a design statement. Their versatility means they can be placed anywhere – within the middle of a table for a talking point over dinner, around the pool or in the centre of a stylish lounge. For external fires, EcoSmart Fire has a range of stylish and contemporary designs. New additions include both the stunning Wharf (shown) and striking Step Fire Pit. Other designs added to the collection include Ayre, Base and the Lighthouse Series.
“Bio-ethanol is a fantastic resource as it removes many of the design constraints surrounding traditional fires,” explained Paul Holt, from Smart Fire UK. “Because there is no need for a chimney or a flue, less space is required and no heat is lost internally. Additionally there are no issues dealing with a mains gas supply as the fire has its own independent supply of fuel. The external heaters offer the same levels of versatility. They can be moved around the outdoor space, can also be used internally and provide a stylish focal point.”
The fuel is stored in the device’s internal reservoir meaning there are no pipes or cables required during the installation process. All the workings of the fire are managed from inside the box so they can be installed into a standard frame or inside an existing fireplace.

Breakout! The formal arrangement of desks, screens, cubicles and separate meeting rooms is fast becoming a thing of the past. Oliver Ronald, Sale & Marketing Director at The Boss Design Group, tells us why every office should have breakout spaces
T
oday, modern offices feature openplan flexible spaces populated with informal collaborative workstations, acoustic office pods and soft seating. The popularity of break-out spaces has soared too, with idea walls, chillout zones, phone booths, and touchdown spaces all becoming a common feature in
modern offices. So much so, that it’s safe to say the pendulum has now swung towards office furniture that facilitates improved communication and collaboration in an informal setting. Whether it’s visual, territorial or acoustic, it’s important that space is created for workers
to enjoy privacy from distracting phones and co-workers, either on an individual or team basis. Soft seating for break-out spaces has come into its own. Personal touchdown spaces, headspace and breakout furniture that provide ergonomically sound alternatives to sitting at a desk or table are now widely specified.

In fact, that’s how the office started 400 years ago in Edward Lloyd’s coffee shop in London (now Lloyd’s of London) and it looks likely that offices for the millennial generation will be designed in exactly the same way. By combining the relaxing atmosphere of a coffee shop with the advanced technology and comfort associated with a modern day office, productivity levels can actually increase. Unlike external coffee houses, employees feel more at home in the work café, whether working as an individual or collaboratively in a group, without being too remote from their office. Reshaping cafeteria facilities and creating a workplace café where employees can meet, work, relax, eat and drink, ensures an efficient use of space that may otherwise be redundant for large periods of the day. Smart work cafés are often divided into sub zones with facilities for food and drink, collaborative spaces and quiet areas, as

Modular furniture is fast becoming a star player in breakout spaces thanks to its unrivalled levels of flexibility and practicality that serve to improve work efficiency and wellbeing. Upholstered in either fabric or leather, modular furniture – especially with timber detailing – offers specifiers and interior designers significant freedom of creativity whether designing office receptions or corporate breakout areas. www.boss-design.co.uk
Soft seating designed for collaborative, work lounge and reception areas creates friendlier and more inviting working environments to improve team communication, motivation and productivity. For privacy seating and acoustic rooms, mrfdesign’s soft seating ranges offer a wide selection of armchairs, sofas and modular seating for office reception spaces, breakout areas and larger office atriums; satisfying the current trend for relaxing spaces within the workplace. There is a need for multipurpose seating designed for impromptu ‘touchdown’ areas, informal spaces for meeting, relaxing, socializing and eating while at work, with high back sofas to create privacy for the user within the open plan office – all these requirements are well met by the s380 Julio and the s410 wingback sofa designs. www.mrfdesign.co.uk

Al-fresco Fiesta The summer is on its way, and we rush to head outdoors! in.Design takes a look at some of the accessories we’ll be needing...
W
ith the longer days upon us, now is the time to make the most of the great outdoors. With so many of us spending our working lives in stuffy offices or on the road battling traffic, there comes a time when our soul yearns for wide open spaces. Check out Ecora (www.ecora.co.uk) for a wide selection of dining, kitchen and lounge accessories including many products for alfresco dining and picnics. Getting together with friends and sharing a rustic picnic or more elegant al-fresco dinner has never seemed more appealing. So, pack up your bags, drop by the deli and head for the hills, coast or country this weekend.
A fresh, nautical feel from Dedar
Of course, eating outdoors has its own nostalgic atmosphere, but there is no need to skimp on style. Why not make your picnic a gourmet affair with linen napkins, tablecloths and blankets? Take some vintage style glassware for wine, flasks for tea and baskets for serving fruit or sandwiches. Why not pack some handmade ceramic bowls for olives or baby tomatoes?
in.VOGUE: 23 Don’t forget to take plenty of cushions for lounging on the beach and rugs and throws for keeping off the chill as the evening draws in. Pfffh is the new pouf by lifestyle brand Fatboy (www.fatboy.com)! It is very likely that this typical sixties retro look will make you feel a bit nostalgic. And because of its vintage vibes, Pfffh looks like it could just as well be a cherished family heirloom. But Pfffh is certainly not old-fashioned. The clean and round shape contributes to a modern feel and the different coloured prints make it look totally fresh. And because of its oversized character it looks tough and sturdy too. Pfffh is a big boy which makes the print that much more eye-catching. The embroidered print gives texture to the fabric. This results in a nice vintage hue, although the materials used for Pfffh are completely up-to-date.
This jubilee edition of the Drachmann bench helps Skagerak celebrate 40 years of design The high-end woven acrylic jacquard fabric is provided by Sunbrella. The fabric has a water-resistant treatment making the pouf perfect for outside too. Pfffh comes in four different colours and in combination with the rich prints, each colour is more than capable of reviving any room. Or reviving the 60s – the choice is yours!
Get a sixties vibe with Pfffh from Fatboy
Fatboy has also introduced two brand new parasols that fit perfectly in lush gardens and urban areas. The outspoken
Parasolasido and Bouqetteketet patterns were especially created for Fatboy by Dutch graphic artist Saskia van der Linden. Saskia studied illustrative design and became famous because of her unique approach in her work with digital collages. The result is a vintage, romantic and poetic look for Parasolasido and Bouqetteketet. Saskia’s characteristic and distinctive illustrative touch matches very well with the Fatboy collection, which stands for iconic products with a unique twist. To celebrate their 40th anniversary, Skagerak (www.skagerak.dk) has set out to create some of their most iconic products in limited editions, available in Denmark, Germany, UK, Sweden and Norway.
24 : in.VOGUE The first limited edition product to see the light of day is the Drachmann bench which will be available in a jubilee edition carrying a number from 1-40. After more than 30 years on the market, Drachmann has cemented its position as a popular garden chair and bench. With the classic X in the backrest and the strong, weatherproof material, Drachmann has inspired many followers across changing times and trends. The original idea to the design emanated from an old painting of a house that belonged to one of Denmark’s most talented poets from the Modern Breakthrough, Holger Drachmann. Following the bench, the limited editions of two other distinguished products will be launched this summer. And new for 2016, Dedar (www.dedar. com) have launched a collection of soft-knit outdoor fabrics featuring a fresh, nautical feel. In a colour palette of bold and primary shades, the fabrics are a comfortable choice for outdoor living that, thanks to their unique softness and superior performance, can also be used around the home. Woven from durable polypropylene, the collection is stain resistant, antibacterial, hypoallergenic, non-toxic and easy to wash and dry. Being solution-dyed, the fabrics are guaranteed maximum resistance to light and discolouration. Just add a string of fairy lights, some antimidge citronella candles or lamps, and you’re all set for summer!

Focused On Flexible Interior architects and designers Shed were recently commissioned by The Office Group (TOG) to create a 4000m2 flexible workspace in Angel Square, Islington, with fabulous results!
T
he Office Group provides flexible spaces to meet and work across the UK. Shed wanted to reflect the progressive spirit of the Office Group movement and its newstart-up residents, which led to a desire for a new aesthetic. ‘Not another mid-century modern interior’ was much the starting point as was the challenge of transforming a 1980’s office block. Shed explored ‘Work In Progress’ – the workspace members involved in the making-of, and also an under-construction
in.BRIEF : 27
Natural cork and specialist timbers balance tech-inspired colours in the Workroom design approach, inspired by makeshift art and construction sites. The building displays its heritage in all its postmodern glory. There are Italianate clock towers and turrets, and harshly punched shapes on the façade. It has the blocky nature of a Lego model. Postmodern architecture led to a postmodern-influenced interior. Given a dreary office block, the solution was to install pastel coloured ‘trays’ in high gloss mosaic resin, to define the clubroom and lounge areas and contain the new design within the existing building. The ply backed resin floor finish runs up the walls to form a low datum. Coloured paint chips layer with clear resin, like a new kind of terrazzo. The resin trays set new rules for
the space, and create a new architecture within, without being precious of the building’s features. There were parallels with 80’s art, particularly the Memphis movement, where colour, texture and shape clash in curiously wrong ways. This inspired a multi layered graphic approach yet the overall effect is timeless and contemporary. Shed battled tedium with a riot of immersive colour and texture, clean lines and graphic pattern. Dividing the site into component parts allowed each to have a signature palette of colours and finishes. Lounge, Workroom and Meeting Room spaces pop with their own energising colour, in pastel peach, mint and yellow, while circulation spaces allow a respite in monochrome.
The palettes show a duality in feeling. In the Lounge, playful pink glossy resin is matched with an industrial exposed ceiling. In the Workroom, natural cork and specialist timbers balance tech-inspired colours. In meeting rooms, textured blue resin surrounds the room, balanced by simple white walls. Through imaginative use of colour and pattern, cost effective methods are given personality. High-level design meets low cost materials. Basic white tiles line the walls of the tea points, lifted with grout in yellow and pink. Carpet tiles in offices take alternate stripes diagonally across the floor. Even in the post room, a simple pink edging costs little but brings a smile. The value lies in an idea, not what it costs.

The ply backed resin floor finish runs up the walls to form a low datum The lounge space begins with our reception desk, a layering of metal finishes. Tactile perforated aluminium meets brushed stainless steel. Partitions follow the Work In Progress idea; end-grain plywood frames filled with glass, referencing half built stud partitions. The huge corner sofa was imagined as a stack of mattresses, in shades of pink, with playfully oversized bolster cushions. It’s of a size to generate collaboration between the pools of people side by side. Sitting centrally is the ‘Pivot’, a large coloured disc seemingly dropped from above, forming the tea point, where visitors make drinks with instant hot water. Above, tubes of light create graphic movement in the exposed ceiling. Each office floor features a pocket of ‘Lounge’ – a breakout space for eating and meeting. Carved into the walls, the phone booths shut off the buzz for just a moment. A low-hanging globe pendant illuminates felt lining and a colour-speckled worktop. Spaces pop with their own energising colour ‘studio’ offices. An open mesh curtain circles a generous sunken banquette, to create an intimate working environment without putting up walls and blocking natural light. Cutting into the raised floor system allows a step down to the concrete slab, exposing more structure and defining a space. End grain tables add a subtle graphic layer. Feature pendants, like stars in space, are a uniform glowing white. Members can
choose the pace of work that suits them best. Personal booths are more private, an intersection of planes of cork and specialist timber. Guests can pin their ideas to the cork through the day. With over 30 sites and growing, Shed thought it was about time The Office Group had a desk they could call their own – ‘the perfect co-working desk’. The dual finish and fold up cable trays are designed around sharing and owning space. A lifted lid shows the desk is in use.
Meeting rooms range in size. The resin tray transforms to create mini rooms sets, running high up the walls and folding down to create shelves, and cutting in to house monitors. Meeting tables are custom designed to be part of the furniture family. Chairs include Tom Dixon Y in yellow. Routes from A to B are lined with customdesigned grid wallpaper, evoking memories of graph paper in maths lessons. Layers of graphic finishes break up long corridors,

The Clubroom is a more focused, members-only room concluding with graphic chevrons drawn on the wall with light tubes. There is a high level of re-use throughout the project. The office ceilings are reused, and all office lighting is reused – modified with a simple diffuser. “Each of our buildings has its own unique identity and, with the bold aesthetic of the Memphis movement as our inspiration Angel Square is certainly no exception,” said Charlie Green, Co-CEO of The Office Group. “The design draws on the shapes, colours and textures of this post-modern style to create a workspace which captures the creativity spirit Islington is known for.”

T
he guide explains the process of collaborating with an interior designer and offers a step-by-step guide for clients which covers:
• • • • •
• How to appoint an interior designer What do interior designers do? How does the relationship work between designer and client? Getting started — where to find an interior designer Fees The project process – from start to finish
“As the professional institute for interior designers in the UK, the BIID has created this user-friendly guide to help both clients and the designers they work with,” explained Susie Rumbold, BIID President Elect, who co-authored the guide. “As a practising interior designer, I often find that prospective clients are unsure where to start researching a potential designer and are uncertain of the process of hiring a designer to help transform their initial ideas into reality. This new guide aims to demystify this process and help clients consider what they want to achieve when setting out on a design project. “The key to a successful project lies in finding an interior designer or design practice that you feel has the appropriate experience, competence, sympathy with your vision and rigorous working practices to suit you and your aspirations. We hope this guide will help to set clients on the right path to achieving this.” To download a free copy of the new BIID Client’s Guide, please visit www.biid.org.uk/find-a-designer/clients-guide.
