A must-see is the Sleep Set built concept rooms, organised as a competition each year. Five international design practices will create a guestroom working to this year’s theme, ‘The Science of Tribes’, drawn from pioneering social science research which identifies social groups based on the shared values, lifestyles and aesthetic preferences of their members. Singapore-based WOW Architects, Mitsui Designtec from Tokyo, and London offices of Aukett Swanke, Gensler and Studio Proof will each collaborate with suppliers to realise their concepts. Once unveiled the finished rooms are a can’t miss highlight of the show and visitors can see the designers make their case before a panel of judges in a late morning conference session on day two, followed by the lunchtime announcement of the winner. Interior design and branding agency Superfutures is creating the 2016 bar, the networking hotspot over the two-day event. With this unique opportunity to let their imaginations fly, the designers are collaborating with visual artist Tupac Martir and food conceptualists Studio Appetit to create an immersive experience where the bar will become a lens to further explore the individual meanings behind the neighbouring Sleep Set bedrooms. A Week In The Life Of Susan Knof Susan Knof, Registered BIID Interior Designer, is the owner and Creative Director of KNOF design. KNOF design is an award-winning international design firm focusing on projects with a modern, natural, and glamorous aesthetic. Susan’s tenure includes roles at large architectural practices, such as Gensler, TPG, and SOSH Architects based in New York City. Having lived and worked in three major cities on three different continents she has a cosmopolitan style and flair to her designs. Her background and experience of living and working amongst different cultures and currencies helps her to seamlessly connect to her international client base. Susan is a business-minded Bohemian and has the luxury of calling both New York and London home. ‘My design style is about balance and harmony through contrast and quite often my life reflects this design approach,’ she says. Monday I love the fresh start to the week and commuting to my office in Soho, taking in the vibrant atmosphere and buzzing city life. I like to start the week off with structure to plan the exciting days ahead. This week I am catching up with the different teams with a latte in hand while setting out our programmes and deliverables. I like to check in on each project to make sure they are being looked after tenderly and efficiently. Tuesday Today I have a regular bi-weekly construction meeting in North London with the mechanical and structural engineers, project manager, and A/V consultants. We
spend hours labouring over every minute detail to ensure the overall building is fully coordinated. After a thorough coordination review we organise our budgets, fees, proposals, and building programmes. I believe the beauty in a building is a lot like humans, it’s what’s on the inside. Of course, for me that is the interiors, but it goes deeper than that. It is all of the detailed technical and structural coordination that becomes hidden in the wall cavities and ceiling voids. The more seamless a design, the more time, thought, consideration and heart went on behind the scenes. For example, a cantilevered stairway does not just float without careful calculation on

With this in mind I tend to spend Tuesdays focusing on the ‘behind the scenes’ work. If it is not thought about before it becomes very difficult later in the game. Exhausted yet fulfilled, Tuesday is done! I head home for dinner and a warm bath with essential oils and a cup of chamomile tea. Wednesday After a busy Tuesday session, Wednesday is greeted with a more restful and invigorating morning yoga class at Triyoga on the king’s Road in Chelsea. It’s another day of balancing. After a nice early start I feel clear-headed and ready to tackle the many facets of my company from accounting, IT, construction programmes, and dealing with clients, teams and manufacturers.
With a relaxed start to the day and the more practical aspects tackled, I am feeling in the flow, so I have opted for a late night in the office. I find beauty in the serenity; when everyone has left I can hear the hustle on the streets of Soho below. I turn up some great music – I’m obsessed with Spotify playlists and get so inspired when I have some good tunes to help get into the flow of the design process. my favourite part of my work is the early conceptual design phase where ideas are free flowing and just starting to come together. The detailed coordination and construction meetings are a necessary part of the process, but my true passion lies in the creative process, planning layouts and material palettes. Thursday As well as working on projects in the Uk, I also spend a lot of time working on international projects. One of the challenges
working on international projects and teams is the differing time zones. Thanks to the beauty of Facetime I can travel without the jet lag. In sync with the sun I will start my calls east and head west through the day. Today I start my day with conference calls in Indonesia. It’s 9am in London and already the afternoon in bali. I am working with manufacturers there to help on a project in Western Africa. This is a dream job and I feel blessed beyond words about the collaborative approach and beautiful designs that slowly form. To make sure it all comes together we have weekly calls to stay organised and track all design changes. Next, I travel to Europe where I am liaising with manufacturing teams in milan and technical teams in Sofia. Just hearing the Italian accents puts me in a good mood. Next is London, ahh back to greenwich meantime. I respond to one of my local

I love a nice stroll through the Design District along the Pimlico Road stopping at a few favourites including Soane Britain, Linley, FBC London, Ochre and a last inspiration stop at Potterton Books. This week ends with a catch-up with some friends and good food at Ducksoup on Dean Street in Soho. 28 : in.BRIEF divides her time between New York and London where she lives with her husband and two daughters, running design practices in both cities. “I love designing small spaces,” said Rachel. “They demand a lot of creativity to find the right balance of just enough furniture to make the space feel warm and inviting but not too crowded to make it feel overstuffed and cluttered. “In one of my previous projects I was tasked with the challenge to make use of a small passage that led from a master bedroom into a larger family sitting room. The client wanted to utilise the space and create a transition from the calm of the master bedroom and the livelier living area.” It’s important to establish a purpose for the space before you start designing, advises Rachel. Make sure you have a clear vision of what you want the space to achieve, whether it is to provide storage, a small hideaway area, or act as a simple room divider. “In this case, we decided to turn the space into a study for the lady of the house,” she explained. This turned out to be a “jewel box” inspired room – the walls are papered in Maya Romanoff glazed paper in the deep teal blue that was echoed in the Pierre Frey curtains. When working in small spaces, it is common for many people to think small. But don’t – think big, especially when it comes to art! “Oversized art works really well in small spaces, creating a visual impact and focal point,” Rachel told us. “In this project, I used oversized art work by the artist Kerri

30 : in.BRIEF Rosenthal to ground the room and give it scale, the desk is my custom design and the desk chair and lounge chair are vintage Ligne Roset and Milo Baughman, both found on the 1st Dibs website.” In the same way, a few big items in a small space look so much better than lots of small items as these give the impression of clutter. Focus on what furniture you want and don’t over purchase. “I turned a small dark closet into a dressing table so my client could utilise the room as a multi-purpose office and dressing room’” Rachel continued. “I think Virginia Wolff would have approved of this modern woman’s “Room of One’s Own!” When working with a small space, you still need to divide it into different zones, this ensures that the space becomes functional and not just a mix of different uses that clash. Focused zones give the space a clear use; this makes the space seem larger as you can immediately see what you can do in the different zones. Rachel started with the desk area and then created a makeup and reading area. The use of colour is also intrinsically important when designing small spaces. “I believe it’s best not to overcomplicate the colour scheme in a small space, and so I stuck to one colour – teal – that was inspired by a favourite dress that my client owned,” Rachel added. “Using a strong colour will also help tie the different zones together. “One of my favourite items to use in small spaces is furniture made from clear acrylic. As well as being functional, you can see right through the furniture, meaning they
don’t take up much visual weight and keeping the space uncluttered.” In this room the walls were filled with art, including inside the makeup closet; using
art doesn’t take up any space as it sits flush against the wall, yet it adds so much design value and personality to the space. www.rlaxerinteriors.com

Tapestry For Our Times Last month’s feature gave an overview of the contemporary tapestry exhibition, Here & Now, currently showing at The National Centre for Craft & Design in Sleaford, Lincolnshire until Sun 15th Jan 2017. This month, we explore how tapestry is relevant for our current times.
T
he word ‘tapestry’ often evokes images of epic scenes hung in the grand interiors of palaces, castles and national trust properties. Whilst it is true that the UK has a proud history for commissioning and appreciating tapestries since the middle Ages, the medium is by no means confined to the history books, or to heritage properties.
a state of focussed, considered concentration on tiny areas, building up shape, narrative and imagery, employing hand skills and ‘time’; the results - unique, immersive and tangible experiences that resonate with today’s world in subject matter, process and as finished pieces.
Here & now is an exhibition that showcases artists who have crafted their skills over many years as well as young artists working in the medium. they are all committed to creating tapestries that are as reflective of the times we live in now, as those produced in the past were of their time.
www.nationalcraftanddesign.org.uk
Contemporary weavers are pushing the boundaries and making tapestry relevant in today’s world, whilst managing to remain committed to traditional techniques, ensuring their legacy. in Here & now artists deal with everything from current political issues to selfies and body image, contemporary feelings about motherhood, freedom of expression and suppression and more. But tapestry is relevant today in more than just subject matter. Just consider the societal hunger for chances to escape our frenetic world as well as the desire for textural experiences and interactivity - on a superficial level witness our constant caressing of screens - coupled with the pursuit of ‘one off’ and personalised experiences. the medium satisfies all of these current ideologies; the act of weaving giving makers the chance to withdraw into

Student Design Challenge Returns Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) is pleased to announce the return of the BIID Student Design Challenge.
H
osted by De Montfort University, Leicester, the one day charrette-style, CAD-free design competition will take place on Saturday 19th November.
Exclusively open to third year BA Interior Design and Interior Architecture degree students, the BIID invites course directors from across the UK to nominate and register teams of six students to take part in this industry-led competition on behalf of their university. The competition has been created to help students design collaboratively in small groups, an essential practical skill that is used in many design studios. Each team will be presented with a design brief on the day and will be given just six hours to develop a design proposal, before presenting their designs to a judging panel led by BIID President Susie Rumbold. Each group will be paired with an experienced, practicing interior designer and BIID member who will shadow the group, providing guidance and advice. This year’s event is taking place at the Vijay Patel Building, a new £65m flagship building at De Montfort University. The
building is the university’s hub for all Art and Design subjects and boasts spacious multidisciplinary studios and design collaboration areas as well as providing a dynamic and engaging environment for the students. After last year’s success, the BIID anticipates a large sign-up rate and advises universities
to register teams as soon as possible. To register your university and six students to take part in the competition, please visit http://biid.org.uk/events/biid-studentdesign-challenge-2016. The deadline to apply is 12:00pm, Friday 11th November 2016.

Knowledge Hub Launched The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) has launched its new online e-learning platform, the BIID Knowledge Hub.
I
n a first for the industry, this cloudbased online platform will host a wide range of educational content to foster the learning and development of interior designers and interior design students. Users can register and access the content on the platform free of charge. “The BIID has developed the new BIID Knowledge Hub to deliver flexible, online learning for interior designers. We understand the time constraints interior designers are often under so we wanted to create a solution for Continuing Professional Development (CPD), which was easily accessible,” commented Susie Rumbold, President of the BIID. “This platform is designed to complement the wide range of live learning events we already offer, such

Stand Up For Furniture Exports! Leading members of the furniture industry met recently with the Minister of State for International Trade and other MPs and peers, to discuss investment in developing export markets.
T
he Export & Growth Event was held at the House of Commons on 11th October, organised by The British Furniture Confederation (BFC) and sponsored by Stephen McPartland MP, Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Furniture Industry Group (APPFIG). The industry, through the BFC, is keen to ensure that the Government understands the contribution the furniture sector makes to the UK’s economy as well as its trade balance sheet. The event was held to demonstrate its ability to grow exports, but also to express its concerns about the level of Government help available. A recent survey completed by almost 150 UK furniture manufacturers indicates that over 50% are planning to increase export activities over the next one to two years; yet 80% had been unable to access EU or UK Government funding for investment in export and growth. When asked about what intervention from the Government industry would like to see post Brexit to ensure the best outcome, the following themes were regularly mentioned:
• Greater liaison with industry to fully understand the market conditions and requirements the industry needs to protect, develop and promote. • Retain commonality of standards and ease of moving goods from Europe into the UK and vice versa. • Access to the single market and, as required, access to the European labour markets for certain skills (e.g. upholsterers).
Stephen McPartland MP praised the furniture industry for being “robust, with lots of gumption.” He outlined how it’s a £10bn sector, employing more than 106,000 people and exporting around £1bn. “It’s very diverse and it makes some of the best products in the world, products that many overseas markets admire and want to get hold of,” he said. www.britishfurnitureconfederation.org.uk
