London Design Festival: Design Is Everywhere The London Design Festival, in its eleventh year, expects more than 250 partners and over 300 events celebrating the best in design. As ever, the Festival also delivers its own varied programme of commissioned projects with highlights at St Paul’s Cathedral and at its hub venue, the Victoria and Albert Museum, with a number of site-specific installations
T
he theme for 2013 is ‘Design is Everywhere.’ A strong message and bold solution, which celebrates every-day, often unappreciated objects as well as the noted design icons we all know and love. The Festival wants to raise public awareness on the
importance of design and how it surrounds us in everything we do. The London Design Festival is reviving its longstanding relationship with The American Hardwood Export Council in a highly ambitious public project to be installed with the poetic backdrop of one of the city’s bestloved landmarks, St Paul’s Cathedral. Endless Stair will invite visitors to climb a series of 20 Escher-like interlocking staircases made from a prefabricated construction using 44 cubic metres of Tulipwood. As a viewpoint, the structure is on axis with the Millennium Bridge leading directly to the Tate Modern and will provide an impressive view of the River Thames.
Table and lamp by Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen
The complex construction is designed by Alex de Rijke, co-founder of dRMM Architects and will provide something of a challenge for engineering partner Arup. Tulipwood is a plentiful and sustainable American Hardwood export, composed here for the first time as cross-laminated timber (CLT). CLT is a method of exploiting the structural properties of timber to create panels that
can form buildings quickly, efficiently and sustainably. Traditionally, CLT is made using softwood because it provides a cheap and readily available source of wood fibre. The Endless Stair pioneers the use of a hardwood species, which is inherently lighter and stronger than its softwood equivalents. The Festival will continue its unique collaboration with the world’s leading museum of art and design, the V&A, which in 2012 saw audiences reach 111,538 for the ten day period of the festival, one of the busiest weeks recorded in the museum’s history. As the central hub location for the London Design Festival for the fifth year, it will again house a broad range of commissioned activity which will be spread throughout the museum and include installations, events, talks and workshops. Swarovski is to set twenty influential designers and design figures a challenge on the theme of detail. Each member of the group will select an object from the V&A’s galleries and use Swarovski lenses to magnify highlights or curiosities within its design. The detail might be hidden – it may
in.SHOW : 07 be in combinations of objects, an uncovered texture, it may reveal or redefine a gallery view. The project will invite visitors to embark on a more intense experience of the Museum’s collections; a ‘journey of detail’ to discover features that they may have otherwise overlooked. The V&A and the London Design Festival offers a packed programme of lunchtime talks, gallery talks, hands-on workshops and provocative debate every year. This year will see a more curated approach by dedicating a theme to each day of the programme to help visitors and participants to make the most of their time and interests during the Festival. The themes for each day are Future, Materials, Making, London, Science/Nature and the programme content is made up of contributions from a wide variety of Partners and collaborators. The Global Design Forum brings together some of the most revered names in the
OFF | CUT, a Fritz Hansen and Chung Tyson Architects collaboration worlds of design, business, branding and innovation to explore how design can make the world a better place. Comprising keynote speeches, panel discussions, fast-paced
presentations and Q&A sessions, the Forum creates a rich platform for open discussion and debate. The programme sees a revised approach for 2013. In the early evening of Monday 16 September at the V&A, graphic legend Peter Saville will headline with a conversationstyle opening in the Main Lecture Theatre. The next day, four main sessions will take place in the Purcell Rooms in the Southbank Centre, involving over 20 high-profile international speakers.

The Districts are a great place to start the Festival journey as each area hosts a wealth of varied activity often within the distance of a few streets. This year two new Design Districts, Chelsea Design Quarter and Clerkenwell Design Quarter, join the existing three – Brompton Design District, Fitzrovia Now, and Shoreditch Design Triangle. Habitat’s Platform Gallery will add a global element to the mix of Partner events this September, hosting 16 leading designers
from 10 countries in East, West and Southern Africa. Highlighting the current shifts and developments in design across the continent, Cape Town based curators Trevyn and Julian McGowan will select over 20 pieces of new furniture and a capsule collection of ceramics, glassware and lighting, all drawing from the most contemporary applications of African pattern and scale. Through a development programme called Design Network Africa, external influencers, including the Habitat senior design team, exchanged their design knowledge and skills. As part of the festival Viaduct at Clerkenwell Design Quarter will be showcasing furniture by photographer Fien Muller and sculptor Hannes Van Severen. Their unique design pieces are minimal in form and detailing but maximal in their usability and use of materials. Their sculpture-like contemporary designs incorporate lighting with storage and work spaces to create single, multi-functional units. The exhibition will run throughout the London Design Festival in Viaduct, Summer Street. The Clore Study Area at the V&A will host an exhibition of issues 8 – 18 of Circular magazine, the award-winning collectable publication from The Typographic Circle. Domenic Lippa, Partner at world-renowned design studio Pentagram has been designing Circular since 1999 and describes the practice as a ‘labour of love’ – combining his interest in both typography and magazine design. Circular, issues 8 – 18 have no set style or consistency, each issue is designed from scratch and is unique. Work on display will include pieces from some of the best graphic designers, including Vince Frost, Stefan Sagmeister, Alan Fletcher, North, Tom Hingston and Spin. The Typographic Circle is a not-for-profit organisation formed in 1976 to bring together anyone with an interest in type and typography. For full information visit www.londondesignfestival.com

Alongside the itinerary in the show’s main auditorium, additional live seminar sessions will occur daily within the individual show hubs, including the BIID sessions, with British design stalwart Giles Miller.
Spanish tile company Apavisa (K&B Hub) AUDITORIUM Benjamin Hubert has been commissioned to design a 200m2 auditorium to house Talks With 100% Design. Hubert has designed a modular system titled AMASS. Comprising
of three simple modular elements, when assembled en-masse the design generates a hanging structure that defines a visually iconic space that accommodates an audience without excluding passers-by. Over 40,000 of the modular elements will be used, inspired by the controlled randomness found in nature and the building blocks of life. The three modules can be connected in several different orientations to build variation into the structure. Designed to be re-used after the exhibition, the modular format of the product enables the same components to be re-assembled in any context or space. The modules are injection-moulded polypropylene and entirely recyclable at the end of their life. Following 100% Design, AMASS will also become available as a product for dividing commercial and soft contract interiors.

A Week In The Life Of William Knight William Knight of Media 10 is the Show Director for 100% Design, the UK’s largest annual contemporary design event. In a very busy pre-show week, he opens his diary to us Monday Working in design promotion as I have done for 14 years still gets me out of bed on a Monday morning. It’s a fascinating, multi-dimensional industry to work in and a privilege. Over the years I’ve been lucky enough to see and be part of many different aspects. My current role is quite technical, balancing event production; with all of the project management skills it demands sales management and promotion alongside
creative and strategic development of the show. Each day throws up unexpected challenges and opportunities. Much like many others I spend time planning my week carefully. Rarely does the plan I write match the week I have! Monday is a key day for recapping sales figures, assessing what’s anticipated for the week ahead and catching up on activity delayed from the previous week. Across

The Coronation Festival was organised by Media 10 the week is punctuated with creative and design meetings; 100% Design has commissioned a range of teams working on individual features within the show. Connecting ideas with potential sponsors, generating design solutions and developing opportunities for people, projects and investment is a brilliant part of my job and something I’ve enjoyed doing over the last few roles I’ve held. Tuesday The day that is often the busiest my week, Tuesday seems to bring all of the areas
of my life that compete for attention to the fore. Today I’m tackling one of the key aspects of 100% Design in its new form since Media 10 took the show over in 2012; the entrance tunnel. By creating an installation as soon as a visitor enters the show is an essential part of the experience – an immersive space that draws people into the halls. Our team working on this, show designers Thomas.Matthews and Studio Design UK, combined to develop a concept with drama; the show opener promises to be dramatic and a great way on introducing our theme this year – Creative Balance.
If my diary allows, and with meetings scheduled accordingly, I head to the British Library in St Pancras, one of the most extraordinary buildings and resources in London. I’ve been a registered reader there for some time; working in my favorite part of the library – the Business and IP Centre – provides focused time to think, work and respond to the series of challenges and questions regarding the show, delivery of the projects we’re working on and the incessant emails. I’m fortunate enough to be asked to

a number of events, exhibitions and receptions throughout the year. This evening is the opening of the Richard Rogers show at the Royal Academy; brimming full of the brightest and best from architecture, design and the wider London cultural world, it was a seriously warm night, the crowds were melting, but it promises to be a successful show. Wednesday Despite working in the east of London and living in the south, I spend a fair amount of time on the west of the capital, due to frequent visits to Earls Court. Despite it being the focus of so much of my attention, visiting an empty exhibition hall always feels disconnected from the reality of the show. The detail that goes into preparation for the show is extraordinary, and complex. Huge amount of effort and co-ordination takes place between us as the organiser and service providers – from catering to rigging, security to the huge number of contractors brought in to the build. Every inch has to be produced, covered, looked at and considered. Today we’re looking specifically at the area taken on by Mette, the multidisciplinary design practice. We’re provided the challenge to them of designing the restaurant at the show. Inspired by the brief of a ‘farm kitchen’ the focus is on developing product design that allows the individual to cultivate food products. I’m always interested in how design can affect positive change, and in this particular instance not only can we achieve a great show experience through the restaurant and seasonal menu, but we can also bring kitchen design and micro-agriculture to life.
Benjamin Hubert has designed 100% Design’s auditorium Thursday I find myself back in the office with a relatively quiet day on Thursday. Keeping a check on sales progress, managing the accounts and ensuring that emails are not getting too out of hand! At this time of year requests for press interviews build up. As the face of the show throughout the year I work with both my in-house marketing team and the press and communications specialists on the show, Caro Communications, to maximize the potential of securing coverage and getting the message about how exciting the show promises to be into the press and
beyond. The one meeting I have is on another of the amazing projects we’ve commissioned, the Hanging Room, an architectural installation for the office section of the show by workplace specialists TILT. The concept looks at how space can be transformed within working environments. Progress is good, as their vision for the space is clear. Working across seven key installations, one for each section of the show (Office, Interiors, Kitchen & Bathroom, Eco, Design & Build and International), the tunnel and main

22 : in.HIS LIFE auditorium, the teams are varied but the vision and clarity behind the designs is a key factor in brining the projects to life. Friday The last day of the week I really try to keep clear; it’s often blocked out in my diary. I aim to catch up with people I’ve not been able to meet or connect with at any other stage of the week. Often my call list covers a huge range of partners, exhibitors, suppliers and designers. I’m fortunate to have a great team in-house on sales, marketing and production. I rely on them hugely, an essential part of being able to perform in the role. The multidimensional nature of the task means that I need to rely on my co-workers to support projects, step up to the challenges and work across the show. Together we cover a great deal. Lunchtime at the end of the week is often spent in the local pub – the mood and feeling as we head into the week-end depends on the successes of the previous week.

24 : in.HIS LIFE Saturday My company, Media 10, was the proud organiser of the Coronation Festival. I was lucky enough to be brought into the hugely impressive team responsible for the show. This meant spending time on site – in the back garden of Buckingham Palace! The show, underpinned by exhibitors that have royal warrants, was a truly memorable experience and a fantastic show to be part of. Sunday Like most parents my week-ends tend to be dominated by children, their activity and desires, as well as servicing the ever more packed social commitments with friends, family and local life in Greenwich. If I’m fortunate enough to grab a bit of spare time a run, cycle or sail really marks the week-end out as different. It’s true to say however, at this time of the year, that emails and the week of work ahead weigh heavy on my mind. I often find myself on Sunday evenings making lists for the priorities for the week ahead and hope it’s not just the first hour in the office that allows me time to concentrate.

The design will demonstrate the Studio’s love for the interior design process and will capture the excitement of the build phase of a project in its rawest state. As well as leading names in the design industry, Decorex continues to welcome new and exciting creative talent. Every year, the mentoring programme Crafted selects a

Martin Brudnizki Contemporary silver and wood accessories from Shona Marsh This year is no exception, as original designs from bright new talent will be showcased. Highlights include Billy Lloyd, an awardwinning potter, who will be exhibiting a selection of interior accessories, such as his cylindrical pendant. Shona Marsh will present her set of contemporary silver and wood accessories, while Daniel Spring will showcase his latest collection of highly reflective, polished and plated finished furniture, such as his playful ‘Puddle’ table. Gillies Jones will exhibit her bold and colourful hand-blown glass bowls and returning to Crafted this year is Cumbria Crystal, with its set of hand-crafted glassware. Also exhibiting under the Crafted program is Out of the Dark, a charity/social enterprise that supports individuals from disadvantaged
backgrounds. The organisation helps steer people away from crime by involving them in elements of craft, DIY, and work skills which helps develop their self-esteem and confidence. Another exciting design is the bespoke sculptural Elementi copper cabinet by new exhibitor, Italian designer Andrea Felice. Although contemporary in design, the piece reflects the Art Deco era with copper mosaic panels cleverly disguising two cupboards and five drawers. British company, iwoodesign will present a stunning collection of sleek contemporary wooden accessories, which cater for the luxury home, super yacht or corporate jet; the traditionally handmade pieces are comprised of wood sourced from all over the world.
Family-run business The Reclaimed Tile Company will also take a stand for the first time this year to showcase its colourful collection of reclaimed vintage tiles and antique terracotta tiles from across Europe. Designers and manufacturers of contemporary lighting, CTO Lighting, will exhibit a range of elegant brass lights comprising of the Braque table light, the Heron floor light and Harvey, a pendant light. Decorex are thrilled to welcome back the rug company GoodWeave, who strive to highlight and work against illegal child labour in the rug industry and to offer educational opportunities to children in South Asia. Earlier this year they ran a competition with students across the country giving the winner the opportunity to display their designs at Decorex. Charlotte Wildsmith was announced the winner and her light and colourful collection will be presented

designjunction showcases design against a stunning industrial backdrop, striking a balance between creative and commercial, while offering a much-needed alternative to the traditional trade show. “This year we have 150 international brands, 30 design led pop-up shops, a strong selection of eateries like Jamie Oliver’s Barbecoa, live ‘making of’ demonstrations from Brooks Saddles and a 3D printing machine, plus an inspiring programme of talks and seminars,” explained Micheal Sodeau, designjunction’s creative director. “designjunction is like a mini city, with specific areas or ‘quarters’ for eating and socialising, for exhibitors, for business and trade. I want people to walk into the show and want to spend the whole day there. It’s not just about buying and seeing, but immersing yourself in it. It becomes an experience rather than a day’s work.” This year, designjunction returns to the centrally located 1960s Postal Sorting Office, where a powerful line-up of renowned international brands, smaller cutting-edge labels, pop-up shops, largescale installations, eateries, flash factories,
seminars and screenings will be presented across three floors of the impressive 120,000 sq ft venue. designjunction will feature more than 150 brands, making it central London’s leading destination for contemporary design and the most important global meeting point of the Festival. Since its inception 2011, designjunction has achieved global success, transporting satellite editions of the show to other destinations including Milan and more recently New York.

A Bona Finish For A Green Fir Floor Bona don’t just gloss over a flooring project – they prepare and preserve too!
T
he John Hope Gateway is royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh’s biodiversity and information centre. it’s a shining example of green construction and sustainability, and the restaurant area features a Douglas Fir floor which has just been finished with Bona traffic HD. the 500m2 floor was sanded and finished over just five days by Fife-based Cleaning Systems UK. the team treated the floor in four sections which allowed the restaurant to remain open while the floor was renovated. the whole area was initially sanded back to bare wood using Bona’s DCS ‘dust free’ sanding system which meant there was no need to ‘tent’ the adjacent mezzanine area. the sanding dust was recycled by being bagged up for use at a local stables! Each section was then primed and given one coat of lacquer at night, ready for two further coats of lacquer the next day. Bona traffic HD was specified for the final two coats to provide the required level of durability in such a busy space and the inevitable food and drink spills. Bona mega Gloss was used for the initial lacquer coat with its glossy finish acting as a wear indicator, to ensure the surface will always be refinished before it is worn down to bare
wood in the future. Bona traffic HD is a very low VoC formulation designed for protecting wood floors in highly trafficked areas. its fast development time means that even busy commercial floors can be put back into full use just 24 hours after application. Cleaning Systems UK specialise in the renovation, cleaning and maintenance of floors in commercial and residential environments, including prestigious royal palaces.

Latham Has The Natural Touch The natural choice in timber and panel products – James Latham – is now offering Natural Touch, Kronospan’s newest innovation in wood panel manufacturing
N
atural touch is the first embossed-in-register melamine board where the grain texture precisely matches the surface finish. now, the authentic look and feel of real timber – the graining, the subtle variations of shade and tone – is accessible on almost any project. this physical depth is achieved by precisely synchronising the surface structure to perfectly match the image of the wood grain below. the result is an organic texture that is pre-finished, extremely durable, easy to work with and offers a consistency in both colour and grain. this means that architects, interior designers, contractors and furniture makers can now achieve an authentic rustic realism using melamine. With natural touch, the applications are almost limitless. it can be used for cladding walls, building furniture, creating fixtures as well as making striking punctuations to spaces and surfaces and the versatility of this product has made it particularly popular within the shop fitting and hospitality sectors.
“the reaction from the market to this product has been really positive,” said James Latham’s Group product Champion for melamine, paul morson. “interest has not only come from top end shop fitters, but also bespoke kitchen and wardrobe manufacturers who want to offer something different from their competitors. We’ve also seen lots of enquiries from exclusive designer outlets and retailers because not only is it a cheaper option than a finished veneered board but every board of natural touch retains a consistent appearance.” Supplied in 14 different decors including rare timbers such as Hemlock nordique, Elm Lava, Cinnamon Walnut and three kinds of oak and with a range of matching edgings, natural touch is now available directly from stock at all nine of James Latham’s UK-wide panel distribution sites. the natural touch range also carries full FSC certification.

ent has always been a show about ideas, and as such it fits perfectly with what is best about London as a design capital. In many ways Tent embodies the qualities that make the city so appealing; independent, edgy, hard to pigeonhole, a place to find the unexpected and innovative in a market that all too often proves predictable and homogenous. Despite its growth over the last seven years, Tent London still manages to feel as far away from corporate as it is possible to be, yet products aren’t art installations - they are chosen because they sell.

Great Expectations! With a massive show season upon us, we talk to five interior designers about what they are most looking forward to. Blanca Sanchez of Halo Design Interiors, Clare Pascoe of Pascoe Interiors, Hugh Jamieson of At Home Interior Design Consultants, Cambridge, Ros Wilson of Roselind Wilson Design and Nico Yiannikkou of Y2DC share their survival tips!
I
s there anything specific you are most looking forward to at this September’s show season?
Blanca: I am looking forward to finding new products and to seeing existing suppliers moving their collections on. In particular, I am searching for more British product. I enjoy making links with and supporting home grown talent. This not only helps the local economy but also brings our projects to life as we work alongside gifted creative people. We also avoid the summer shut-down issues which affect Continental supply. Clare: I’m always looking for emerging British talent and designers who focus on chic sustainable design. Realistic pricing is also a consideration – but this does not necessarily mean cheap; the price should reflect the individuality, effort and skill – but I also want to see evidence of commercial sensibility and not just an over inflated ‘designer’ price tag for the sake of it. It’s a fine balance; but those who get design and commercial economics right are onto a winning combination. Hugh: We have such a great mix of design inspiration from the various Autumn Exhibitions, now referred to as London Design Festival. designjunction is rather
more edgy now that 100% changed its look last year and thinned down on quantity of exhibitors but went up several notches in quality. Decorex has the usual mix of mostly traditional and/or classic products – again rather more interesting last year and of course a new venue this year. Maison&Objet is timed for a perfect visit to Paris! Ros: I’m hotly anticipating the stylish new venue for Decorex at Kensington Palace. This refreshing change will no doubt be host to a flurry of new suppliers, new talent, new ideas and loads of inspiration. For the past two years I have visited Maison&Objet and the creative display of the exhibition stands is an absolute must for designers. This year I was astounded by an exhibit entitled “First Foods” which showcased homeware designs by various designers relating to food. Nico: Nothing specific, it’s more the chance to see the innovative designs which are coming through from new designers. Some shows have become too commercial and are overrun by the big brand names. It’s a shame we don’t have more independent designer shows which focus more on the upcoming designs/designers. 100% used to have a spin off exhibition at one point that was more focused on this but I am not sure if this is still part of the current scenario. Having said that of all the shows my
particular favourite would be Maison&Objet. Also keen to see how Decorex will work in Kensington Gardens this year. Do you plan an itinerary or do you simply wander? Clare: I tend to walk quite swiftly up and down the aisles. There is often a plethora of the same exhibitors at these design shows mixed in with sales lead stalls looking to sell volumes of products. I avoid both – I have no desire to have my badge scanned by all and sundry as I get too much junk email as it is. Instead I scan the stands ahead of me
Clare Pascoe

Playroom by Ros Wilson so I can plan those I wish to investigate further. Hugh: It’s obviously great to see suppliers you already know for a quick catch up, but that has to be balanced with having enough time to seek out something different. There might be specific things I am looking for to use on current or future projects, or I could be looking for inspiration; whichever the case I always have a ‘system’ to ensure I don’t miss a ‘lane’! Ros: Given my existing commitments and
workload I usually cannot attend the shows for longer than one full day. As a result I do not have an itinerary but I strategically plan my route around the exhibition halls to ensure I can get it all done on one day. Nico: Not so much an itinerary, but I like to go around the exhibits in a methodical way, though you inevitably bump into friends/ colleagues so that doesn’t always work out! Blanca: I plan an itinerary – ensuring that I cover all aspects of the show in question. Depending on how long I have at the
Ros Wilson
54 : in.SIGHT particular show, and the size of the exhibition, I may earmark particular areas as the most important, to ensure that I get maximum benefit from the show. Do you follow Twitter feeds, blogs etc in the run up to the shows? Hugh: No. I use LinkedIn and take my hat off to anyone who has time to follow Twitter and blogs! Ros: I read the emails that get sent to assess if there are any exhibitions or suppliers I really want to see/meet and I note this information. I also download the app showing the Hall map so that I know where I am at all times should I need to change my planned route to see everything. Nico: No, not really though we have recently been a great deal more active on the social media front especially with our Twitter account.

Blanca: I don’t tend to follow Twitter feeds etc in the lead up to the show. However, having recently started a Twitter feed myself, I intend to search out show Twitter feeds this year for the first time and get more connected to what’s happening behind the scenes as the September show scene starts. Clare: No, this isn’t really my thing. Making it to the shows is achievement enough; even when I was based in London it was a concerted effort to find the time, with most shows easily absorbing half a day. Now I am based in West Sussex it is even more of a mission, hence why I target emerging shows and those who focus on more individual products. Have you ever made a really useful contact/discovery at one of these shows? Ros: At Milan I was thrilled to learn initially that all the Halls are located off one avenue making it very easy to navigate to where you want to go. Later I also learned that the big suppliers have stands in both the Classic and Contemporary Halls so if you are looking for big suppliers, you can bypass some of the Halls accordingly. I always make very useful contacts at these shows so there is no one name that stands out. Nico: I did many years ago. I recall meeting Based Upon when they were just starting their business and have since watched them grow their South East London business into a worldwide product used by designers near and far. We have also developed strong bonds with a number of furniture suppliers whom we have stumbled on over the years.
Dining room by Hugh Jamieson Blanca: I have made many useful leads through the years. One particularly memorable one was finding a Spanish furniture manufacturer at Maison&Objet in Paris a few years ago. They not only make the most beautiful luxury furniture, but they are based on the outskirts of Salamanca in Spain, down the road from where my family comes from, and I have since been to visit them in their factory and used their product in many projects. Clare: Granorte – who supply cork flooring and amazing sustainable boards for making furniture. I love products that inspire you to design a piece simply to use the product. Hugh: Definitely! It’s like all these shows – if you come away with one new contact

take a comfortable backpack for all your brochures and business cards as your hand bag can get very heavy. Take a break for lunch and step outside of the Hall so that you can feel rejuvenated when you go back in. I promise you will get show fit in no time.
Blanca: Wear comfortable shoes and carry water! Clare: Resist picking up every brochure, it kills your shoulder, encourages unnecessary waste and clutters up your office. I instead use my phone to take photographs of the company contact details of those I want to investigate further from the comfort of my office, adding them to our source library if I feel they’re a product that could benefit our projects. Hugh: Comfortable shoes, yes even for us chaps! I wish all exhibitors had zappers, but they don’t so you still need lots of business cards. We prefer to have brochures sent to us – a bag/briefcase can get rather heavy

BIID Partners With 100% Design The British Institute of Interior Design has announced its support for this year’s 100% Design, the UK’s leading contemporary design event. BIID President Sue Timney will be taking part in a special panel discussion on Friday 20th September as part of the event’s ‘Talks with 100% Design’ seminar programme.
The ‘BIID Presents’ session runs as part of the interior design focus from 12.15 until 13.15 on Friday 20th September. The discussion, entitled ‘Today’s Renaissance Designer’, will be chaired by interior design journalist Kate Burnett, and alongside Sue Timney will feature Linda Morey Smith and Giles Miller. The session will allow each panellist to draw upon the different creative experiences and influences of these four top designers and how these are manifest in their work today. “We are excited to once again see the Institute as a partner at 100% Design,” said Sue. “It provides a great opportunity for visitors to see new ideas and innovations, and meet with suppliers and fellow
designers. The exciting ‘Talks with 100% Design’ programme is another major attraction full of great speakers and exceptional content.” © AMELIA TROUBRIDGE
‘T
alks with 100% Design’ will take place in a central auditorium, created by British industrial designer, Benjamin Hubert. 2013 sees each day of talks curated with an individual focus; Interior Design, Architecture, The Consumer and Creative Balance.
BIID President Sue Timney
100% Design is an essential exhibition for designers and architects, with last year’s event attracting over 25,000 visitors. This year’s show is set to feature a broad spectrum of new talent, fresh ideas and innovative design, including an even bigger range of UK and international brands, as well as dedicated group stands from a range of countries. The award-winning layout of the show is defined by four key industry sections; Interiors, Office, Kitchen & Bathrooms and Eco Design & Build. Uniquely, an entire section is dedicated to International Pavilions alongside a substantial platform for new designers within Emerging Brands. Alongside a 60m tunnel entrance, central bar, specially designed restaurant and auditorium, the show also features specially commissioned editorial hubs within each section of the show. BIID Opens Seminar Programme At Decorex 2013 The British Institute of Interior Design will be playing a major role at Decorex International 2013, the luxury interior design show held on 22nd to 25th September at Perks Field and The Orangery, Kensington Palace, London
T
he show’s prestigious seminar programme will be opened by Sue Timney, President of the BIID, on Sunday 22nd September, at 11am. Sue will be in conversation with renowned interiors photographer and BIID Honorary Fellow, Andreas von Einsiedel. Their discussion, entitled ‘The Light Box’, will ask the audience to take a different perspective on the interior, through the light and shade of the lens. Sue and Andreas will be discussing his influences and vision along with the creative relationship he has with designers, and they will reference the BIID Honorary Fellowships, Professional Pathway, creativity, and visually strong interiors which are expertly photographed. Andreas is a well-established and respected photographer who has been photographing interiors for over 25 years. His work has been published in many of the world’s most prestigious design and shelter magazines, however his enthusiasm for photography and interior design remains undiminished. Sue set up her design practice in 1980 after
graduating from the Royal College of Art and being awarded an RCA major travelling scholarship to work in Japan. Originally a fine artist, Sue is known for her breadth of design work incorporating residential, exhibition, restaurant and product design. Sue holds the Medal for Design from the Textile Institute and is a Visiting Professor and Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Art. She became Education Director of the BIID in 2010 and President in 2012. “Decorex is a great opportunity for designers of all levels to see and appreciate the trends and innovations for 2013,” explained Sue. “It is vital for the Institute to support such a respectable show, to illustrate our backing for our industry and its development.” Launched in 1978 as a small, exclusive and targeted exhibition of high-end design merchandise, Decorex was an instant success and has grown to its current size of almost 300 exhibitors. ast year designjunction attracted more than 17,000 visitors, showcasing the best in furniture, lighting and worldwide product design. The show strikes the balance between creative and commercial design, offering a fresh alternative to the traditional trade shows. The event offers a vibrant and less traditional show environment, including large-scale installations, temporary eateries, working flash factories and live entertainment, becoming London’s largest non-purpose-built event space, over the five days. “It is exciting to be a part of such an innovative, forward-thinking show,” said Sue
Timney. “The event showcases a range of high quality international brands as well as smaller experimental labels. Designers can enjoy the dynamic yet relaxed atmosphere the show has to offer.” For more information about the event, visit www.thedesignjunction.co.uk and for details on BIID visit www.biid.org.uk
The BIID will also be taking part in a designjunction debate entitled Creative Luxe on Saturday 21st September at 4pm. Sue Timney, BIID President, will be joined by Rodney Fitch, Charles Leon and David Trubridge in a discussion chaired by Aidan Walker looking at what determines luxury in today’s designs. The panel will touch upon the social and economic implications of creativity, discussing whether this will result in the re-definition of luxury, or its elimination altogether. Since designjunction began in 2011 it has achieved global success, including Milan and more recently New York. From the 1960s Sorting Office, perfectly positioned just minutes away from Clerkenwell, designjunction will play host to a powerful line-up of world class international brands, smaller cutting edge brands and design
