abled, a well-known cosmetic store from marie Claire, is located in London’s tottenham Court road. the Fabled brand breaks the mould on traditional beauty and has created an exciting new retail platform for the world’s premium beauty and skincare brands. the two-level flagship beauty store was created to convey a journey to the consumer, and this is where Solus Ceramics’ trench range took centre stage. inspired by italian architecture, trench is populated with speckles and tonal variations
and offers the look of intensely structured granite in the form of highly engineered porcelain. “Due to the nature of the product, the trench range ticked all of the boxes for us as we needed something practical, non-porous and easy to maintain, and that is exactly what Solus Ceramics provided for us,” explained Laura Dainton, Studio manager at gpstudio, the project designers. “We also used large format tiles as they perfectly reflected the scale of the space available and created a monolithic, pared back feel.”
pete toule, Area Sales manager at Solus Ceramics, added, “Fabled has been a stunning project to work alongside gpstudio with. From start to finish, the project has been exactly what we imagined and we are extremely pleased with the end result. one of our favourite aspects of the striking design was the way in which the large format tiles were used. the trench range provided a remarkable finish, which echoed the sophistication of the building.” www.solusceramics.com

Inspire & Intrigue! designjunction, London’s leading design destination, returns to the celebrated King’s Cross site, bringing an array of immersive projects, innovative materials, and striking lighting installations during the London Design Festival.
F
irmly cementing its reputation as the platform for cutting-edge design, the move to the King’s Cross site in 2016 has seen the success of designjunction continuing to grow year after year. This September, the show promises to not only be bigger and better, but also more enticing, inspirational and the place where design meets, a leading theme for this year’s edition. Making use of the centrally located Granary Square, designjunction’s first openair space has set the bar for the variety of exciting large-scale installations on show for the many visitors expected later this month. A first for designjunction, a collaboration with Turkishceramics will present a striking and fully immersive ceramic installation that will be created in the central fountain space of the square. The selected artist Adam Nathaniel Furman will present ‘Gateways’, a series of colourful tiled gates that will invite visitors to take a journey through the rich history of ceramics in Turkey. Each gate encompasses a different design story, inspiration that Furman has drawn from iconic and historic sites from all over the
world - from the Ishtar Gate of Babylon, the Safavid facades of Isfahan’s Naqsh-e Jahan Square, the gothic terracotta of New York’s soaring Woolworth building to the famous red glazed ceramic Underground stations of London and more. Illuminating designjunction is an array of decorative lighting brands, representing British and international lighting designs across the show’s five key exhibition spaces. Striking installations include a collaboration with two French studios – Blackbody and Haviland, presenting the ‘Helen, Light & Porcelain’ bespoke chandelier, and showcasing for the first time at designjunction is LG Display’s OLED light panels, offering a flexible approach to lighting design. Additionally, Studio Resident, hailing from New Zealand will showcase its Circus Light, an LED system of interconnected brass rings that looks to create a striking vertical decoration within Cubitt House - the show’s trade destination. Not to be missed is also the return of lightjunction, an area dedicated to showcasing a collective of prestigious

Optimised Illumination Optimising the lighting to fulfil the practical requirements for a space, or providing decorative features, is one of the most important aspects of creating a lighting scheme.
B
y carefully composing a lighting scheme from a precise selection of lights, it’s possible to create a design that not only embellishes architectural and spatial features, but also optimises each individual area for the intended task and offers flexibility in how the space is used. Each area is unique and will have different lighting design needs. For example in kitchens, a combination of task, accent and ambient lighting should be used. task lighting is required under kitchen wall-units and above breakfast bars and dining tables
to provide adequate light for both cooking and eating. Accent lighting can be used in kickboards, coving, shelves and niches to provide an extra layer of decorative, visually interesting light to the room, and ambient lighting should be used for general illumination. A garden on the other hand has an entirely different set of lighting requirements. For large gardens with trees, bushes and flowerbeds, light can be used to draw attention to these natural features, creating beautiful landscapes. Use high-powered floodlights to light large trees and spike
lights for low-level plants and bushes. By choosing waterproof fittings, lights can also be submerged in ponds and water features, creating an additional point of interest in a garden. At Collingwood Lighting, our team of lighting designers are on hand to create comprehensive designs tailored to meet the visual and practical needs of any space. A Week In The Life Of Nicky Dobree Nicky Dobree is an award winning international interior designer who creates elegant and timeless interiors that are each an expression of the client’s individual style. Nicky specialises in luxury ski chalets, villas, and contemporary residential interiors. Monday Interior design is my life. I live it and breath it and wake up feeling lucky to be doing something that I love. I tend to get up early to go through my emails and make the most of the hour change to touch base with the European contractors before heading into the office where I can then be fully focused on the team. I walk to work every morning across Vauxhall Bridge to my office in Pimlico popping into Brunswick House on the way, a wonderful treasure trove of architectural salvaged pieces. There is something magical and very uplifting about being close to the river in the London. I pick up a coffee from Taylor and Kallouck opposite the Studio in Moreton Street. It is a wonderful cafe which is at the heart of our small community. I have met some lovely people in here and this morning was introduced to a potential new client too, who lives just around the corner. Once in the office we have a quick catch up on each other’s weekends before I sit down with the team to go through our projects and workloads for the week ahead. Later, I catch a flight to Geneva and drive up to Crans Montana where we are building a chalet for a client. I always stay in the same
hotel just by the lake and even the same room! There is something very grounding about it. Tuesday Being in the mountains is so wonderfully uplifting. It’s very soothing after the city. Having had breakfast I drive to site to meet my client and the contractors. Even though the chalet is a new build, the brief was to design an old chalet in the traditional Swiss style, which is what we have done. Built entirely from old timbers, using local
in.HER LIFE : 17
18 : in.HER LIFE stones, the chalet sits on the hillside as if it has been there forever. Outside, the traditional carnozet is being built. This is typically Swiss and is a small outbuilding attached to the chalet. It is a vaulted intimate stone room where you drink wine amongst friends, and in the winter eat cheese fondues and raclettes, so keeping the smell of the cheese away from the house. There is a fire in the corner too to keep the room warm during the winter months. We break for lunch at Le Farinet and after a plate of linguine a la marinara en papillote, we go to the antique dealers, a wonderful Alladin’s cave where we source some local pieces of furniture from the Valais to add to the authenticity of the interior and to give the chalet its personality. In the evening I drive across to Ferme de Moudon, my home in Les Gets, where I bed down for the night. There is always something magical about coming through the front door which hits me every time. Even though it’s late, I will sit out on the balcony for a while, look up at the stars and listen to the stillness of the night before going to bed. It is wonderfully calming and I have to pinch myself every time that this is home. Wednesday After breakfast on the terrace, I pop into site in Les Gets where we are building a new 700m2 chalet on the piste for a client. It is good to see the concrete frame coming together and to begin to feel the spaces. I then drive across to Megeve, just an hour away, where we are completing phase 2 of the build now that planning conformity has come through. In the afternoon I head over to Chamonix to discuss a new project, before
catching the flight back to London. Thursday I go into the office to debrief the team and to catch up. After that I have a conference call with my client for the hotel project that we are working on in Andalucia, which is due to open in Spring 2018. The Moorish Arab Andalucian architecture of this white hill top village is stunning, and the views across to Morocco are spectacular from the
roof top. I have enjoyed working with a different vernacular and the challenges that we face here are in total contrast to those that we face in the Alps! In the afternoon I go through the soft furnishing schemes with the team, and look at the new furniture and lighting collections that we are working on. Friday I fly to Munich as we are working on a listed 1920’s house in Bogenhausen, one of

the most desirable residential districts in Munich. It belongs to a lovely client of mine whose chalet I did in St Moritz. It has been a challenging three years of renovation and working within the constraints of a listed building but it is exciting to now see the end in sight. The client has been very much part of the journey which I love; it makes the project much more personal. The client also has a wonderful collection of contemporary
pieces, many of which have come from the Carpenter’s Workshop so it has been lovely to incorporate these into the rooms too. We meet on site with the architects and all the team to go through the details and decisions that need to be made. It is always intense as there is so much to get through. I arrive back in London exhausted and glad that it is the weekend.
Weekend The weekend is about food, friends and family and re-connecting with what is essential, so I try to fit in as much of that as I can. On Saturday morning I go out for breakfast with my husband, James, for a good catch up on the week. We will sit for hours chatting. It is one of my most special times. We then wander, taking in vintage shops, antique markets, and an

I am constantly on the lookout for fresh inspiration, be it in a painting, a vintage piece or the colours of the changing season. Inspiration is all around and it is wonderful to have the creative space to embrace it. Later, I bake my two boys their favourite chocolate cake for when they get home. This has been always been a family tradition and their eyes never fail to light up when they see it on the cake stand. I love it when Fabian and Felix do finally come bursting through the door. It is always slightly unpredictable as to what emotional tornado is going to hit but deep down I feel complete. There is nothing that I love more than having my family around me. In the evening we will have a family supper, with lots of chat and laughter followed by a movie. Utter heaven! www.nickydobree.com

Soft Metal! If you’re seeing a lot of copper around right now, you’re not alone! Copper (or rose gold, depending on who you ask) has reigned supreme as the go-to for making a space feel warm, luxurious and interesting.
U
nlike some trends, it isn’t going anywhere, but only getting bigger as it infiltrates all aspects of commercial spaces. The good news? You don’t have to settle for one item, as copper chairs, stools and lighting are all now available to make a room glisten. If you’re looking for an easy way into this trend, it’s stools. Apart from the fact they’re cheaper than splashing out on a full suite of chairs or a new set of lighting, copper stools are unusual enough to make an impact that punches far above their relatively discreet size. For a more industrial look, try adjustable swivel stools with wooden seats. A contrast of pale wood and copper anchors the look a little, bringing it down to earth, and gives them a vintage, loft-living feel. Look out for utilitarian details like angled legs, turn handles and banded foot rests. Copper also looks good across all kinds of lighting, no matter how much you use (the good thing about metallics rather than colours is, perhaps with the exception of gold, it’s hard to have too much of them!). Even the simplest table or floor lamp silhouette looks sophisticated when it’s been rendered in copper, so don’t hold back – try it on every level of your lighting scheme. And equally cool whether they’re part of a
slim, modern design or a more elegant vintage look, copper chairs work well mixed with stools or more simple wood and plastic chairs. Copper works well with white and black, and even unexpected colours like grey, orange and yellow. Look out for dining chairs with pale wood and copper legs too. www.cultfurniture.com

Influenced By Industry With respect for the original design, and in collaboration with Galvanitas, Satelliet has developed several new products to create a complete S-17 collection.
B
ecause of its charm and characteristics, the authentic S-17 is a perfect fit with today’s hospitality trends, and Satelliet have developed a complete collection around this classic chair. Originally the S-17 chair was part of the school furniture collection of the Dutch manufacturer Galvanitas. Specially designed for the secondary education it became very popular as a canteen chair. The specific features of the original S-17, the ‘pair of compasses’ legs and the very sturdy steel U-profile, has been incorporated into the design of the additional table, barstool and armchair. All these items meet the original core values of Galvanitas: solid, steady and ethical.
The stackable S-17 is the driver of the collection and fits perfectly within Satelliet’s collection. The seat and back has the classic qualities of the original S-17; durable, and recognisable by the layers of compressed wood veneer. The sheet steel frame is finished with a very special durable epoxy coating, called the Galvacoating. This gives the frame the necessary protection, and also its industrial look. With the Huck blind rivets the seat and back are assembled in the traditional way to the frame, not only giving the chair an authentic look but also a very solid, strong connection. The blind rivets offer a clean, smooth surface, with a comfortable feel that also prevents possible damage to clothing. Plastic protection glides on the metal legs
not only add a design accent, but also protect any flooring. The S-17 collection is well executed, fitting perfectly together by their shape, design and functionality in any project. The collection contains a side-chair and an armchair, a table, and, coming soon, a barstool. www.satelliet.co.uk

00% Design’s 2017 edition has the theme of ‘Elements.’ Whether in Design & Build, Interiors, Workplace, Kitchens and Bathrooms, or Emerging Brands, many of this year’s displays have also been inspired by the show’s theme. From an immersive entrance feature curated by design writer Max Fraser to the pivotal central bar and surprising features across the five distinct show sections, each installation explores the this year’s unifying theme of Elements. This considers everything from the fundamentals of design to the component parts that make up a product, the materials used to the stories and processes of development.
Bath and Bristol by Ross Bennett (Design & Build Bar)
The ‘Design & Build Bar’ is inspired by London bar design. This installation by Ross Bennett features a variety of elements found in the urban environment, such as London stock bricks made from the clay that the city sits on, pitted concrete similar to that of the Barbican Centre, and oak referencing the river Thames. The bar also features playful materials such as brass, tin, rubber mac and bands which actually stand for objects that were of huge importance in historic London. Furniture brand Arper hosts, for the second year, the digital hub of 100% Design: #ArperBloggersLounge. Centrally located, the Lounge is a dedicated area for bloggers and online media. Sit Back & Stay Tim Armitt, Managing Director at Lyndon by Boss Design, discusses the key role that seating and furniture plays in interior design schemes across hospitality and corporate sectors. Lyndon’s Entente meeting booth is often specified in hotels to meet the needs of corporate clients
T
he importance of seating and furniture within any interior design scheme can never be underestimated. no longer specified purely for visual aesthetics and comfort, seating and furniture is now designed to create quality and creative spaces that aid functionality, productivity, wellbeing and to increase revenue. this shift is being felt across all sectors; from hospitality and corporate environments, to airports and retail. in the hospitality sector, designers and specifiers have long been driven to produce
the ‘wow’ feeling by creating an uplifting environment for relaxation and escapism. But now, it transcends the workplace too. today, there is a switch from seating and furniture that is purely functional, to that which engenders greater quality of work life for employees. High-backed meeting booths that come fully equipped to meet every technological need help create touchdown spaces and informal meeting areas, whilst high tables and stools further aid the process of collaboration. meanwhile, meeting pods and telephone booths help continue the flow of nomadic
working patterns; providing a framework for both collaborative teamwork and headspace. modular seating successfully spans both corporate and hospitality sectors and is the ideal accompaniment for more relaxed and flexible open-plan areas that cater to multiple uses. From straight and curved configuration seating, to more traditional options of sofas, corner units and footstools, the modular possibilities are endless. it’s time to sit back and stay awhile. www.lyndon.co.uk

When Ethics Loom Large… Every Veedon Fleece carpet and rug is purely bespoke; carpets are made only to order to client specification, created specifically for each project.
T
his year, Veedon Fleece celebrates 25 years as a registered UK company. A family-owned company, run by Adam and Clare Gilchrist, with ethically run carpet looms in the Kathmandu Valley, their founding statement was to create the best quality carpets without the use of child labour. Veedon Fleece still stands by its original concept and now creates purely bespoke carpets and rugs on a worldwide basis to an international clientele. The Evolution of Veedon Fleece… often described as couture, each Veedon Fleece carpet or rug is a one-off design commission, hand woven in their own experienced workshops in the ancient city of Kathmandu, nepal. these workshops allow the ability to create the variety and uphold the quality of Veedon Fleece production. Each commission is treated as unique and is looked after from beginning to end by a dedicated in-house team of skilled point paper artists, dyers, weavers and finishers; their carpets are made exclusively on a design commission basis. • Quality of design • Quality of materials • Quality of workforce • Quality of service Adam Gilchrist explained the secret to their success. “it’s not a secret really, just pure hard work, passion and dedication to excellence,” he
Sisters Solace by Sophie Smith said. “Founding our own factory gave us control over what was being made and, as importantly, how our product is made. We limit our annual production to about 10% of what many retail companies produce, and we are lucky that our clients understand that
to produce excellence takes time. “We are lucky that patronage is back and that people around the world are actively working, through their advisors, interior designers, and architects to commission

heirloom quality carpets. Every day i am humbled by the extreme effort that is put into creating by hand these wonderful couture commissions by our people in the Kathmandu Valley of nepal and still am often overcome when beautifully designed orders come in and the final carpets arrive. “Because of this i often attend and help with installations where you can see the true brilliant rationale behind the interior designers’ choice of design, colour and placement within a room.” www.veedonfleece.com *images shown are original artworks, not finished rugs
Alex Joergenson Competition stimulates creativity… Veedon Fleece is proud of its association with the inchbald School of Design, London. Each year, the School’s students are encouraged to submit designs for inclusion in this event (see images), and three lucky winners have their designs taken through to the finished product and are awarded their rugs as prizes. this initiative was instigated to give the designers of tomorrow an understanding of how versatile hand-made carpets can be
and the importance of including them in luxury interiors. Some years the competition has a particularly strong group of entrants and Adam feels there is someone worthy of an additional, fourth, prize, called the “manufacturer’s indulgence.” this year’s winners are roberta Picchi, Alex Joergenson, Sophie Smith, with the manufacturer’s indulgence going to rowan Fuggle.
