hile the classical British weather has been teasing us this month, changing from blazing sunshine one moment to thunderstorms the next, our minds have turned to how to get — and keep — the best tan possible. We’ve been looking at different options to suit everyone: sun beds for the sun worshippers who would like an extra boost before their holiday, fake tanning options for those who’d like a great glow on the spot, and some wonderful sunscreens that will help to keep sensitive skin both safe and youthful. And when baring bodies on the beach, individuals tend to think about the options to look our best. We investigate the different possibilities for clients looking to combat cellulite, including high tech options and the best creams on the market. Our business pages focus on the future spa at Belvoir Castle, where they are looking for tenants and staff to help to create a stunning new spa experience for clients from across the

globe, in a beautiful and traditionally British setting. Our spa guide this month whisks us away to the sumptuous worldwide spa at the Royal Mansour in Morocco, with its absolutely breathtaking interiors, expert staff, and orangery-style swimming pool. We are welcomed by Fiona Knox to the Macdonald Marine Hotel and Spa in North Berwick, where they host Amanda Hamilton’s wellness and detox retreats. We also explore the day spa at the Three Horseshoes Country Inn in Staffordshire, on the edge of the beautiful peak district. The Beach Hut experience is something we really can’t recommend enough: over 25 minutes lying on a warm bed of sand, you are taken from day break through to sunset with gentle and relaxing music: pure bliss. Finally, we speak with Maxine Stead, founder of Alexandra House, about her daily routine and the philosophies that have helped her to create this gorgeous secret sanctuary. Yorkshire spa expands with new Roman inspired thermal rooms One of Yorkshire’s leading destination spas, Alexandra House, has expanded with the launch of two new underground thermal treatment rooms. The Romaninspired thermal rooms, which were opened to the public on 1 June, are a first for Yorkshire, housed in two vaulted cellars in the spa’s renovated 200 year old premises in Huddersfield. Spa owner Dr Maxine Stead has invested £150,000 into the refurbishment of the thermal rooms, which has been carried

out by local tradesmen over the past six months. ondering how you’ll keep that faux glow going for a full two weeks when you’re on holiday? Treatwell ‘s Editorial Director Liz Hambleton tells you how… What is the secret to a good spray tan? The secret is to prep way before you actually step into the booth. With the right prep you can add days onto the shelf life of your faux glow, something we all need to get a handle on when

it comes to booking that pre-holiday appointment. Exfoliation is the best place to start; dry skin and spray tans make for a patchy combination, but a thorough buffing with a potent exfoliator will stop the tan from clustering on your elbows, knees and any other dry areas. Booking a wax appointment before you jet off as well? Make sure you’ve scheduled it in a few days before your tan or you’ll find the colour sinks into your pores and looks a little dotty. Not a good look. What you do after you’ve had your

tan is equally as important. Keep skin free from anti-perspirant, fragrance and avoid working out and water for 12 hours to be safe. When you do shower, swap your shower gel for a moisturising shower cream to stop it stripping your tan away. The final piece of advice? Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise! Just make sure you’re using a product that ISN’T oil based as this kind of formula can breakdown fake tan very quickly. www.treatwell.co.uk

he Macdonald Marine Hotel & Spa in North Berwick is renowned for its beautiful coastal setting and glorious 19th century Victorian architecture. Situated on the East Coast of Scotland, the hotel has 83 unique bedrooms to choose from. The spa is located on the lower floor of the hotel. The spa was open in August 2007 which has part of a multi-million pound hotel refurbishment. What facilities do you have on offer? Our facilities include a state of the art Techno gym; an 18 metre swimming pool; a thermal suite with an indoor/ outdoor hydro pool, ice cold room, sensation shower, massage shower, Aroma grotto, steam room, bio sauna,

and a hot rock sauna. We also have a relaxation room, a spa lounge and 7 treatment rooms. Do you have a restaurant or cafe? What’s on the menu? There is a strong sense of camaraderie and trust, and we all look out for each other. Working

T

he Three Horseshoes Country Inn has been run successfully by our family since 1981, with the spa opening officially in March 2015. We are located in Staffordshire, on the edge of the picturesque Peak District, just below the Roaches Rock formation. The location allows our guests to disconnect from the demands of their daily lives, truly relax and escape – it’s a beautiful place to be. Tell me about your facilities? We are the first spa in the UK to offer the Beach Hut experience which allows our guests to feel the positive benefits of relaxing on a sunny beach, top up their Vitamin D levels and also stimulate their metabolism rate. In 25 minutes, lying on a bed of warm sand, you are taken from darkness to sunrise, peak sunrise, then sunset, whilst relaxing music is gently playing too. It’s the 25 minutes in the day that our guests are

encouraged to do absolutely nothing, just relax and enjoy. Our Farmer’s Sauna is a little different to a “conventional” sauna. Inspired by Austrian spas and the spicy goodness of the forest the sauna replicates the experience of an Alpine Brechel cabin with herbal steam shots and a gentle increase in temperature. One of my favourite aspects of the sauna is the fir tree needles that we have on the floor, which helps to boost the circulation in the soles of the feet. It’s really easy to neglect our feet but this gentle massaging sensation can unlock tension and stress in the rest of the body. Alongside our Stonebath, Rasul and Cedar Plunge Pool facilities we also have our centrepiece facility, The Mill Wheel Shower. The feature is another UK first, turned by water power which pours out from the shovels in intervals, alternatively warm and cold. Our guests always talk about the wheel as something that surprised them – the warm then cold water!

Do you have a restaurant or cafe, and what’s on the menu? We have a Bar & Grill but if you book a spa break you are booked in to dine at our Stables Restaurant. Our menus are designed on the basis of seasonal, locally sourced produce. We have a lot of variety, from our light lunch options of artisan open sandwiches to our delicious and exotic desserts such as our Hot Coconut Soufflé and Passion Fruit Sorbet. Do you have a signature treatment? Our signature treatments are probably our Herbal Steam or Heaven Facial. I love the results of the Heaven Facial and it’s always a pleasure to see our guests impressed too. We think the curiosity behind the Bee Sting ingredient is what intrigues so many of our guests to try it for the first time, but the results encourage them to visit again – which is great! What are your most popular treatments?

Our Kurland Herbal Steam is one of our most popular treatments; it leaves you feeling completely relaxed and comforted, with the added benefits that the steam and muds give your skin. What are your chosen/favourite brands? Spa Manager Katie Kirk worked with Heaven for five years before we merged together with Mill Wheel Spa, and has loved it for so long that it seemed right to introduce it to our guests. It is part of our ethos to offer something different and so we have chosen Kurlan too, as it is different to other spa product houses and loved by us all. Tell me about your staff We are a team of four, additional to a spa manager, all very motivated and hard working. We have all been here since the spa opened and so work together really well to achieve our targets and improve the spa

experience for our guests. Describe your staff inspiration/ motivation and training programmes We all encourage each other as we all share the same aim: to go from strength to strength as a spa, ensuring that each of our guests has a positive and relaxing experience that they will treasure. We have a board whereby we put last month’s figures and targets to see what we have already achieved and the areas on which we can improve. This helps us to distinguish what works best and where we need to address more time or attention. We also train to use our product houses as effectively as possible. Recently we have introduced a new treatment to our menu, which has involved further training with SkinBase Radio Frequency. What’s your philosophy/mantra? We are inspired by the spas in Austria, as they are very different to the spas here in the UK, with more of a focus on wellbeing and wellness. We believe that

by focusing on wellbeing, we provide a more holistic and personal service, leaving our guests in a state of pure relaxation and comfort after a visit with us. What special ‘spa breaks’ are you currently offering? What packages, or specific offers or marketing, have worked best for you? We have found that our full day or overnight packages are most popular and also allow us to get to know our guests that little bit better. B

elvoir Castle is the ancestral home of the Duke of Rutland. The family have lived at Belvoir for 36 generations, in an unbroken line spanning almost a thousand years. The castle was given the French name Belvoir (now pronounced ‘beaver’) — meaning beautiful view — by its first owner, Robert de Tondi, a Norman baron who was awarded the land on which Belvoir now sits after fighting at the Battle of Hastings

in 1066. The construction of the first castle began in 1067, primarily as a means to defend its Norman owners from attack, and so took full advantage of its defensive position high up on the ridge. By 1464 the Wars of the Roses left the building more or less in ruins. Some 60 years later it rose again, but as a nobler structure with a central courtyard, parts of which can still be recognised today. However, in 1649 that too was

destroyed during the civil war. Its third incarnation began in 1654, and was designed as a large family home with no connotations of defence or war. The castle you see today finally emerged in the early 1800s and was built for the 5th Duke and Duchess of Rutland between 1801 and 1832 by the noted architect James Wyatt. January 2013 marked the start of an extensive 2-year restoration programme at Belvoir. The historic discovery of a collection of plans

SPA BUSINESS that Capability Brown had drawn up in 1780 (originally thought to have been lost in the fire of 1816) were uncovered in the Belvoir archives, transforming the gardens’ restoration. Crowning a hill in Leicestershire, the castle’s turrets and towers rise over the Vale of Belvoir. The castle is located 10 miles from Melton Mowbray and 8 miles from Grantham. MY LIFE… Maxine Stead, founder of Alexandra House Spa tells us about her career and how she fuels her day What’s your background – have you always worked in health and beauty? My career began in 1993 when I obtained a 2:1 degree in pharmacology and physiology and consequently a PhD in psychosocial oncology. My thesis explored quality of life issues in women with ovarian cancer and was carried out part-time whilst I was in fulltime employment at the Clinical Trials and Research Unit in Leeds. Upon leaving university I worked in the field of clinical trials, firstly as a clinical trial manager and then moving to the government-funded National Cancer Research Network, when it was established in 2001, to coordinate cancer research across the UK and to increase participation in clinical trials. My remit included managing senior staff and contributing to the strategic leadership and management of the organisation, liaising with senior healthcare professionals and senior staff in government and charitable funding bodies. I was also responsible for the development of national systems and structures. In 2005 I moved to the UK Clinical Research Network, a similar government-funded network aiming to coordinate clinical research across all areas of healthcare, where I stayed until setting up the spa in 2007. My dramatic change in career was prompted by me feeling increasingly

less rewarded in work, which was becoming more and more political and involved a lot of travelling. I took the decision to establish my own business, helping people with busy jobs and lifestyles like mine to take time out and to develop a different approach to life.

How do you start your day? I always eat breakfast – usually a cup of hot water with lemon, followed by fruit with yogurt and muesli. I tend not to rush in the morning as I like to be in a calm frame of mind for starting my day.

What’s the best piece of advice you were ever given? And what advice would you pass on? To break free from your comfort zone – it pushes your personal boundaries and prepares you better for unexpected circumstances in the future.

Do you stop for lunch or graze? Both! I snack during the morning and afternoon on oatcakes or almonds and stop for lunch midday.

Do you have a mantra/philosophy? Everything in moderation – a little of everything does you good and enriches your life.

How do you unwind? I practice Iyengar yoga which I love as it quietens my mind, but challenges and strengthens my body. I love going for walks and getting in touch with nature. I also meditate regularly which is great for settling my mind and body.

What are your favourite skincare products? My skin is naturally dry so I love using facial serums and body oils to hydrate my skin. Eve Taylor’s aromatherapy skincare oils are the best in my opinion and Molton Brown baths products are divine.

What’s the secret to your success? The secret is having belief, working hard and being focused and determined. Even when the spa was new I believed that it would succeed. I have kept the focus of the spa very specific and have not been distracted with providing
