PROFILE

Everything’s coming up roses Marie McAleer of Rosa Red explains how she and business partner Ann Atri pooled their industry expertise to develop a colourful and timeless jewellery brand that appeals to women of all ages Tell me a bit about how Rosa Red was started and what your involvement has been/who you’ve worked with? Ann and I have always been in the retail industry. I was a Senior Buyer at Littlewoods for 10 years. After having my son, I relocated back to Glasgow where I became Buying Director for Texstyle World, which had 85 stores and a budget of £85 million, before taking on the role of Commercial Director at Klick Photopoint, a company which had 600 stores and a budget of £110 million. Ann has worked as a merchandiser and merchandise controller at companies such as Next, River Island and M&Co. We met at Texstyle World in 2002 and then we moved together to Klick Photopoint. We’d always worked very well together, so we decided that we would rather be making sales and profits for ourselves rather than for other people. Initially, we set up a retail consultancy business and we did projects for Caledonian MacBrayne, M&Co and some local businesses. We then thought that we should set up our own retail business – Rosa Red was born. We decided to sell jewellery, as it comes in one size, meaning there wouldn’t be the same stock investment in sizes and colours as there would

be if we had decided on footwear or clothing. Neither of us had been involved in jewellery before – my background was soft furnishings and Ann’s was fashion – but the same disciplines apply, and we were used to sourcing and working with factories in the Far East so this seemed like the most sensible option.

We felt that there was a gap for good quality, fashionable pieces – without them having to be cutting edge. We wanted women of all ages to feel glamorous and stylish without breaking the bank.

What was the aim of Rosa Red when it was first established? We researched the market and felt that fashion jewellery was very much focused on a younger market. We felt that there was a gap for good quality, fashionable pieces – without them having to be cutting edge. We wanted women of all ages to feel glamorous and stylish without breaking the bank. We generally use seasonal colours, such as pink, white and turquoise in summer and red, purple and black in the autumn. Fashion trends come and go, but most women have these staple colours in their wardrobes and we feel that they can extend the life of their outfits by adding a Rosa Red design. This versatility is particularly relevant in the current economic climate. How were the initial products developed, and what was the response? We launched with just five designs! When we first started we didn’t even have matching bracelets. We didn’t have the buying power

to invest in moulds at that point. It was important to gauge the reaction before we proceeded with more pieces. We got our first ‘gig’ through my mother’s friends at the bowling club, and they absolutely loved the designs. Then we did more events through word-of-mouth and people were really positive about the range, giving us the confidence – and the funds – to develop it. Whenever I create a new collection, I have the bowling club ladies in my mind and so far that has served us extremely well. What challenges were overcome when the company was starting out? It was impossible to raise funds when we first started. We went looking for grants and were told that there was no help available for retail businesses. We quickly realised we would have to fund this ourselves, so that was a challenge. We were also dealing with a factory that was not used to the stringent quality procedures that Ann and I insisted on. We had several

PROFILE

dressed up or down according to your mood. We tend to do very well with ‘colour carrier’ designs. This means a design that can be translated in to several colours and can carry on from season to season. Liza is just one such design. We have been running this for eight seasons, also in a variety of colours and it is always in our top 10 sellers list. Which trade shows do you attend and which one works best for Rosa Red? We attend both of Scotland’s Trade Fairs and exhibited at Moda this year, even contributing to the catwalk with our jewellery. We’ve exhibited at both Spring and Autumn Fairs but to be honest, we are noticing a real change at shows. I attended these shows for 15 years in a buying capacity and I can see that people do not buy in the same way anymore. Buyers are reluctant to place orders that tie up cash at the start of a season. They would rather order little and often, and are used to ordering online now, or by using brochures. When was the website launched and how does it support the business? We have always had a website. It is a good way for buyers to see what we have on offer quickly. Orders have increased on the website, which is why we have recently made an investment to upgrade it. We really feel that in this day and age it would be remiss to not have a website. Times are changing and online sales have increased, and are only set to get bigger, so we need to be part of that. What have been the key milestones for Rosa Red? Exhibiting firstly at retail shows was a huge decision for us as there was such a large cost

involved, then the progression to supplying shops which meant we had to change our mind set from retail to wholesale, and then attending trade shows. Renting an office was a big milestone, as was launching our trade brochure. Releasing our own range of packaging was a big step and a big investment. Jo Swinson is our local MP and she wears our designs regularly. She is often seen at Prime Minister’s Questions sporting Rosa Red. The Deputy First Minister for Scotland also wears our designs. It gives us such a buzz when we see people in the public eye wearing Rosa Red pieces. We have just been shortlisted for the Best Small Business category in the Glasgow Business Awards and were recently featured in the business section in the prestigious Glasgow Herald, which has one of the highest circulations of any newspaper in Scotland. How do you view the current market and what trends, both in product and in business, do you see emerging over the coming months? Trading is difficult and we feel that, as suppliers, we take the risk in stock investment so that buyers can buy little and often and react to their sales. I think buyers are looking for entry price point level product that fills the gap for gold and silver as they are now so expensive. We feel that buyers are looking for the right product at the right price, but also want the security of knowing that their supplier is reliable and can support them. I think that people are more cautious about ordering products from a new supplier as the current trading conditions do not encourage risk. Trade shows are expensive for both exhibitors and buyers, so we have to ensure that we use other media to satisfy demand such as brochures, websites, Facebook and Twitter. What are the future plans for Rosa Red? We are committed to offering the best collections and service that we possibly can.

Other suppliers have diversified in to scarves and handbags in the search for turnover, but we feel that this takes away the focus from the principal part of the business and only serves to split sales. We’re very keen to expand more in to England but it is very difficult to source good agents. We want to increase our presence here and abroad, and feel that partnerships with trade and consumer publications will help us do that. We’d love a stockist in every town in the UK and we won’t stop until we get there! $

What sets Rosa Red apart from its competitors in the jewellery market? We may not be able to compete on brand name yet, but we can compete on design, quality and customer service. We’re very often praised for the way we handle our orders and

How important is the location and history of the company to its success? We are based just outside Glasgow, in Kirkintilloch. I don’t really think it matters so much where a trade business is located, as so many orders are placed by email or telephone now. We could be based in Inverness or Bristol. The fact that we have an excellent brochure and website means that we are accessible to anyone in any location. I would suggest that it is our individual histories that have been more integral to the company’s success. We’ve both worked extensively within this industry. We know what works and what doesn’t, and have applied this knowledge to Rosa Red. We run this business as though we were running 1,000 shops and I think that this professionalism shines through.

How has the product offering changed over the years and how would you describe your current collection? As I mentioned, we only started with five designs and the pieces didn’t match. We now run around 50 designs each season, complete with matching necklace, earrings, bracelets and rings. We work very hard to make sure that all the pieces are of a high standard in terms of colour and finish. Rosa Red launches between 20 and 30 new designs each season, carrying over best-sellers from the previous season. We have resisted the temptation to add scarves or bags to our collections as we want to remain focussed on the jewellery and ensure that it continues to be relevant. Our current collection is based on Hollywood glamour. Our strapline is ‘Glamour you can Afford’ and we have really pushed the boat out this season with statement pieces in classic jewel colours such as purple, red and teal. We’ve named our designs after starlets, as they evoke so many images. Garbo, Lana and Bette immediately conjure up old style Hollywood glamour.

I would suggest that it is our individual histories that have been more integral to the company’s success. We’ve both worked extensively within this industry. We know what works and what doesn’t, and have applied this knowledge to Rosa Red.

deliveries where the colour variations were horrendous, necklaces didn’t match bracelets and vice versa. It took us a couple of seasons to make the factory understand that consistency in colour and finish was essential. As Rosa Red has grown, we’ve helped the factory to develop. Initially, we were working from our homes and used our savings to buy stock. All deliveries were made to my home and sat in my front room and my family packed the stock in return for a takeaway. Ann set up a stock room in her conservatory, but it became impossible to separate work life and home life. We were being approached to supply shops, so we had to bring more definitive processes in to deal with these orders. We made the decision to move in to an office. As orders grew, we then hired an assistant and we’ve subsequently moved to bigger premises with a warehouse.

any follow-up queries. We despatch deliveries within 24 hours, and we have a no-quibble guarantee. We aim to have all items from each season’s collection in stock at all times. The brand is progressing, and to this end we have created point of sale, carrier bags and gift boxes in our distinctive colourways to support and enhance our products. We produce a high quality brochure each season to launch the new collection. Customers are very often surprised that our company is smaller than they think it is. Rosa Red jewellery is hand-made, hand painted and hand-polished, which gives it a superior finish.

What are Rosa Red’s current best-selling designs and collections? Our best-selling design has been Ice Storm for the last eight seasons – it just runs on and on! I think this is because it’s neutral and can be
