pring has finally sprung and we can’t wait for what’s set to be the most exciting British summer of our generation. Last year we united as a nation for the royal wedding celebrations. And now, with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee taking place in June followed by the London 2012 Olympics in July and August, there’s never been a better time to be flying the flag for all things Great Britain. So as ever in this issue we have a range of features we hope will inspire your success. First up we’ve spoken to various retail experts in our feature, The British Empire (starting on page 40), who offer their advice on making the most of summer’s impending event spectaculars. Because wherever your salon’s located, the countrywide optimism and heightened interest in Britain offer too many business benefits to be ignored. But as millions plan on jetting into the UK this summer, just as many will no doubt be flying out. So to get your business ready for the holiday season, investing in a range of travel-sized suitcase friendly products is essential to up-sell to every client. Don’t let them leave the country without a mini version of their favourite products. From hot tools to skincare and hair protectors, we’ve got it all covered in our special guide, starting on page 42. Speaking of summer holidays, getting their bodies ‘bikini ready’ will no doubt be at the top of many clients’ to-do lists this month. So

this issue we’ve been trawling the industry for hi-tech aesthetic medical machines and devices that offer real alternatives to tummy tucks and liposuction. And what’s more, we’ve discovered many versions that can be offered in-salon. Advanced body treatments that adopt technology such as lasers, radiotherapy and ultrasound are hot property in the beauty industry thanks to their ability to provide inch-loss and treat cellulite without any pain or downtime. They’re an expensive investment and they aren’t for every salon – but for those with the right clientele, they can be extremely lucrative. he Potting Shed Spa in Batley, West Yorkshire and Zen Lifestyle in Edinburgh were among the winners crowned at this year’s annual Professional Beauty Awards 2012. The results were announced during a glittering ceremony hosted by comedian Rufus Hound at London’s Park Lane Hilton on the eve of the final day of last month’s Professional Beauty expo. Now in its fifteenth year, the Professional Beauty Awards celebrates the best in the business with 12 gongs up for grabs in categories ranging from Beauty Salon of the Year to the best Make-up Specialist, Day Spa and Employer. Entrants go through a strict judging process consisting of written application forms as well as in-salon visits from

Salons and therapists celebrated at Professional Beauty Awards 2012 mystery shoppers and officials which are them independently scored using predefined criteria. The Potting Shed Spa and Zen Lifestyle walked away with the accolades for Best Salon of the Year – three rooms or fewer and four rooms or more respectively. Meanwhile Alison Smith from Skin and Tonic Beauty Salon was awarded with the prize for Therapist of the Year and Elise Scholes Pilkington triumphed in the Nail Professional of the Year category. Meanwhile Saks Hair and Beauty in Kings Hill, Kent, scooped the prize for Employer of the Year – 20 employees or fewer. Owner Claire Denyer, who has already picked up a clutch of accolades since opening in 2006 including a Sapphire Award for Franchise Salon Owner of the Year 2011, says: “Winning

this award has been a personal goal over the last couple of years so I’m thrilled. I believe I was selected as a winner because of my passion and dedication to the industry, my salon and my team. I’m fully committed to staff education and development and believe this shone through in my entry.” This year also saw the inaugural World Spa Awards event launch, which recognised nine global businesses. A panel of seven experts, all based in each geographical area, selected the finalists following a vigorous judging process. Among with winners was Lanserhof in Lans, Austria, which was named Destination Spa of the Year Europe and The Dolder Grand Spa in Zurich, Switzerland, which took home the prize for Hotel Spa of the Year Europe.

INDUSTRY UPDATE National consumer magazine marketing firm waives membership charges for salons Salon owners looking for an innovative way to attract new clients can now take advantage of a free membership with The Hair and Beauty Group. The company, which launched in 2003, offers free haircuts and beauty treatments through promotions in national consumer magazines. The reader leads are then filtered through to its member salons, which are given the chance to up-sell and retain the clients for future business. Every salon that signs up to the scheme is given area exclusivity and can choose how many magazine readers they receive and when the free services are offered. The group previously charged salons £100 to join, a £240 annual subscription and £4 per lead. But changes to the business model mean salons can enjoy all the benefits of membership at zero cost. Tony Corston, owner of Grantham’s Gerard Hairdressing, comments: “We’ve been using The Hair and Beauty Group’s prospects for a number of years now and the system really works. We have turned hundreds of prospects into regular clients. I cannot recommend the group highly enough.”

Five hundred Joico hairdressers, distributors and educators flew out to Antwerp in Belgium last month for the brand’s 2012 Kick Off event. The attendees were treated to drinks and canapés before watching a catwalk show featuring the styling creations of international Joico ambassadors Ulf Schjerpen, David Murray, Bert de Zeeuw and Gianni Scumaci. Various industry names were revered for their hair styling talents last month at special ceremony, The Cut Awards, hosted by consumer magazine Hair. Among the winners was Nottingham’s Angelo Vallillo, creative director at Zullo and Holland, who won Britain’s Best Stylist (pictured). Hob Salons meanwhile took home the prizes for London Salon and Regional Salon Group.

hey’re known for their excessive grooming habits, so it comes as no surprise that the past and present cast of TOWIE have been flying the flag for all things professional hair and beauty recently. First up Amy Childs and Harry Derbridge attended a charity auction and catwalk show last month hosted by Inanch London. The awarding-winning salon teamed up with fashion label Pia Michi to put on the event at the Millennium Hotel in Mayfair, raising £7,000 for Barnardo’s. Meanwhile, Lauren Goodger opened the doors to the first Lauren’s Way popup boutique in Buckhurst last month, which retails her line of self-tan products, eyelashes and clip-in extensions while also offering professional treatments. Finally, last month’s Professional Beauty London was unsurprisingly a hotspot for the groomed stars – with several cast members causing chaos on the show floor and making personal appearances. Joey Essex showed off his spray tanning skills on Crazy Angel’s stand while Amy Childs launched her new strip lashes line in collaboration with Blink and Go. So whether you’re a fan of the show or not, it seems we haven’t heard the last of the gang who’ve put Essex firmly on the map for what’s hot in terms of professional hair and beauty services.

While qualified doctors can only perform such procedures, there are now advancements in the salon market that enlist similar technology to offer tangible results. For even less outlay and no pain or recovery time whatsoever, today’s clients

ody image has become a national obsession. Despite the gloomy economic climate and our ever-stretched wallets, increasing numbers of Britons are opting for surgical procedures in their quest for the perfect figure. According to the latest figures published by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, tummy tucks and liposuction were the biggest rising stars of last year, with demand soaring by 7.2 per cent and 6.3 per cent respectively. But it’s not all good news for the multi-million pound sector: despite an unwavering increase for all the top procedures during 2011, the recent PIP scandal and widening awareness of cowboy surgeons and botched jobs is leading to more patients seeking out minimally-invasive methods. In fact, experts predict that treatments that offer similar results but less downtime are the ones to watch now. Dr Josh Berkowitz, the founder of London’s Wimpole Aesthetics, has seen an increase in interest for such procedures. His clinic offers a range of body sculpting services such as Smart Lipo, Vaser Lipo and Smart Tight. Using ultra sound, lasers, heat and radio frequency, the fat cells are damaged, liquefied and then sucked out via a number of incisions – offering similar results as liposuction but without as much risk or danger of post complications. These treatments, which are usually carried out under a local anesthetic rather than general, cost consumers in the region of £2,500 – a much lower price tag than

can undergo inch-loss and anti cellulite treatments in the comfort of their local salon.

Surgical technology

Based on the same premise as their surgical counterparts, these salon-friendly treatments damage the fat cells by heat,

radio frequency, pulsed light or lasers. But instead of being sucked from the body via incisions (which is obviously the reserve of a skilled doctor) the cells are broken down and deposited through the lymph. Clients are then encouraged to exercise throughout a course of treatments to aid and encourage inch-loss and the excretion of these liquefied fat cells. Laser lipolysis is one of the most popular forms of such treatment available to salons today. Using a laser that emits low levels of energy, the treatment creates a chemical signal in the fatty cells, breaking down stored triglycerides into free fatty acids and glycerol. These are then released through channels in the cell membranes and transported around the body to the tissues that will then use them during metabolism to create energy. With this in mind, exercise is required for maximum results, so many salons combine the treatment with a stint on a vibration plate or similar work out machinery. Popular machines on the market include the i-Lipo (E: sales@chromogenex.com Chromogenex.com), which has been backed up by independent clinical studies that show results, in some cases, which are comparable to those achieved by liposuction. Ultra sound imagery confirms up to 30 per cent reduction in the fat layer depth after one treatment with a typical 2-4cm loss in the abdomen circumference. With four pads, 36 individual lasers can be positioned onto the client’s problem areas to shape and contour the body where needed.



AESTHETIC BODY On the radio

Radio therapy devices are also becoming hot property in this sector. And because such machines use a treatment head that can be manually transported across the body, they offer greater flexibility. Using waves to excite the molecular structure – causing vibrations – and generate heat, the thermal energy breaks down the fat cells. When combined with additional therapies such as vacuum to break fatty tissue further, boost lymphatic drainage and stimulate blood circulation, inch-loss and cellulite reduction become a reality. Lesley Reynolds Khan from the Harley Street Clinic has built up a loyal following of fans with such treatment. She is touting the TiteFX – a popular choice among her elite client base – as one of the top performing platforms for non-invasive inchloss. As the next generation of minimally invasive lipolysis, it uses a combination of clinically proven radio frequency energy, vacuum and an electroporation pulse to destruct the fat cells. “This offers fantastic results,” she says. “It’s the same platform as BodyTite but can be used by therapists.” Likewise, Carlton Beauty and Spa’s

This machine features Multi-Polar Radio Frequency, which doesn’t need to be adjusted by the therapist making it easy to use, along with a vacuum function and colour therapy to break down more fat cells while reducing inflammation and any discomfort.

Wired for sound

Ultrasound cavitation is another popular treatment that’s been a top choice for many salons for the past few years. It also offers a safe and painless alternative to liposuction while being highly effective on cellulite. Using a powerful low frequency ultrasound also emitted via a treatment head, the waves target the fat cells only through a process called cavitation, breaking the fatty areas down into triglycerides and gases, which are then removed from the body naturally through the lymphatic system. Harnessing the power of faradic currents, adhesive pads are fitted to the treatment area – which can include abs, arms, thighs, the stomach or derriere – causing muscle contractions. After a series of treatments, the results are a more toned and contoured physique. So what’s the future of non-invasive inch-loss procedures? A relatively new technology called ‘cool sculpting’ is an up-and-coming technique that experts say is destined for big things. Essentially, the devise targets the fat cells alone, freezing them to the point of elimination so they crystalise and then naturally flush out of the body – via the liver – in six weeks. The first machine in the UK is Zeltiq (Coolsculpting.com) and is currently available at several clinics in the capital. But with a hefty price tag topping £80,000, it’s been a slow burner among salons and the rest of the UK. But whether the treatment uses lasers, radio therapy or electrical currents, it’s clear that technology is only going to get better. This sector is at the top of the list of professional body treatments to watch for many clients, so don’t get left behind.

Natural alternatives If you’re still unsure about delving into the world of aesthetics, some natural-based machines on the market promise to offer similar results

DON’T WASTE MONEY

“It’s important to remember that we’re in the business of hair and beauty – not hotels,” says Lutos. “So many salons that I visit want luxury flock wallpaper or complex boutique-hotel style decor. This is great if you have the budget to replace and revamp it every 18 months. But if not, it’s a really expensive option. Salon walls need to be able to withstand the wear and tear from footfall with water, colour and chemicals being used freely.” The expert’s advice is to opt for plain painted walls throughout the majority of the salon before choosing feature walls to inject your personality and style. He adds: “White or neutral walls can be regularly touched up and a feature wall can be papered at minimal cost. However, if you opt for designer wallpaper throughout and a client gets colour on the wall, you’re going to be faced with a hefty decorating bill.”

DO PICK CLASSIC FURNITURE

“There’s no such thing as a shortcut with salon furniture and if you want items that stand the test of time, then you need to invest in a reputable brand,” says Lutos. “I can’t stress how important this is. A large proportion of my clients are salons that

have bought cheap furniture thinking they were cutting costs, but the reality is that backwashes leak, chairs rip, hydraulics stop working and styling stations quite literally fall apart. If there’s one area that deserves your investment it is furniture.”

“Ask someone you trust to take a tour around your salon and tell you what they don’t like. Do this on a regular basis and really take on board what they say. Do you need to de-clutter? Have you got out of date magazines? Are there corners of the salon with old hair lingering? Do your gowns need replacing? Is the toilet spotless? Is the atmosphere friendly? When you’re at the heart of any business it’s impossible to see the details that a fresh pair of eyes can see. And while it might sometimes be hard to take, we often need to hear criticism in order to build a stronger business.”

Legally blonde Tina Rook, head of Saks Education, explains the confusing subject of apprentice contracts

“T

he law states a contract of employment must be issued within eight weeks of someone starting work. This is no different with an apprentice. As an employer, you have the responsibility to make sure that you provide your apprentices with the opportunity to train as part of their job as well as paying and treating them fairly. “An apprentice contract doesn’t need to differ from a regular employment contract. The one you draw up must cover the basic details of the apprentice’s role in the same way as you would for any other employee. These details include their working hours, rate of pay and holiday allowances and benefits. You should also clearly state their job description

and what is expected of them within this role. You may also want to cover their training schedule and any time off that you’ve agreed for them to study for their NVQ. The contract should also include an agreed notice period as well as any grievance or complaint procedures. “The agreement between an apprentice and their employer is, by its nature, complicated. In fact, apprentices have a very specific legal status. They enjoy certain rights that are not extended to other employees – including protection from certain forms of dismissal such as redundancy. It is important that you understand the nature of the contract. “In practical terms, the apprentice has a set date when their contract will end or an event that will trigger its conclusion.

“Redundancy is difficult area. Given that apprentices are, for the most part, treated like conventional employees, many businesses presume that they can make an apprentice redundant. So it’s vital that you understand the costs of taking on an apprentice as they cannot be made redundant. “Legal precedent has established that a firm is likely to be found in breach of contract if they dismiss an apprentice on the grounds that they can no longer afford to keep them on. “You can, however, legally dismiss an apprentice on the grounds of gross misconduct, for example. Similarly, if they break the terms of the contract then it may be reasonable to dismiss them. “So how can you protect yourself as an employer? “Whether developing a new website or redeveloping an existing one, it’s vital that

you create a strong brand identity that mirrors your business or brand. Moreover, it’s also vital that you recognise the function and purpose that your site has. For example, is it for online appointments, selling your services or simply to give potential clients information? “A lot of salon websites seem to forget that ultimately it’s their clients that the site should be for, so the imagery and style used should always mirror that. For us at Ken Picton, the challenge was to give a fantastic first impression instantly and to show all the services we offer to make the clients want to know more. “In any web development process it’s so important that the team you choose to create it is in tune with your ideas and

thoughts. We chose a company in Holland called U-lab, whose team fully understood the need for our site to be able to work on all platforms, and the ability to have full functionality within each. For example, any use of flash would mean it wouldn’t work on an iPad or iphone. And as we have iPad stations in our salon for clients, we needed a company who were experts in J query Html design. This led to some innovative design with the use of containers on the homepage, which now means clients can create their own settings and the site will remember it for each individual. “The information on your site should be relevant and easy to read. Years’ of research has proved that profiles on


BUSINESS TIPS the people within your team will be the most consistently hit pages on a salon’s site, along with the prices and interiors. Therefore these areas should be given the most importance. For example, we have a complete section on our people, their prices, biographies and the potential to blog on their own personal pages. “The online appointments facility has always been the most hit page within our site and shows that the future of any hair website should have a full online appointment service 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “But don’t forget your website is also one of the best recruitment tools you can have, and doesn’t cost anything – so use it. “Invest as much into your content management system as the design, as this is what will keep it relevant, fresh and up to date. There is nothing worse for a client to return to your site to see there is nothing new to see or read – so having the ability to change the information and update it free and easily is vital. Always look for ways to make your clients want to come back to your site. “Finally, make sure your site is

developed so it is fully optimised with search engines and it will work smarter and harder for you. The use of Google analytics means you can see when and where your site is most used – even down to the cities and pages – as well as the amount of time people spend on your site and what is of interest to them, which

Social insights Social media expertValorie Reavis deconstructs the important figures behind a Facebook business page

U

nless you sit staring at Facebook every day learning all of its ins and outs, you could easily miss some valuable features designed to help businesses make a mark in the social networking world. Case in point? Facebook Insights, a free online tool that illuminates your page’s performance statistics. Last month we launched our Facebook Masterclass series with a brief overview of what Insights holds in store for users. This month leader board statistics, which are the first thing you see when you click on the Insights icon, are under the spotlight. And understanding what these mean is the first step to developing a successful strategy for engagement. Before proceeding, however, you must ensure you’re using the most recent version of Facebook Insights, which should have four key metrics across the top. If you can only see three, click the link at the top of the screen that says ‘Take me to the new Facebook Insights’. On this page there are four metrics, which display a figure for the previous seven days. Every day these numbers refresh to show whether the past week’s figures have gone up or down. This first area, along with the graph below and a few numbers on your wall, give some basic indicators of your performance over time. Understanding what these numbers mean will help you understand

Total likes

This one is just as it sounds – it’s the total number of people who’ve liked your page. This includes all the likes and unlikes your page has received and shows how much that figure has gone up or down since the previous week.

Friends of fans

This is the total number of people who are friends with your fans, so is the total number of people you have a potential connection to. If you post an update on your wall and every single one of your fans shares and reposts that message, this is the number of people who’ll see it.

People talking about this

This is a new addition to Facebook Insights and helps you focus on the number of people who are truly spreading the word about your page. When someone engages with your page updates, that action shows up in certain areas on Facebook for that person’s friends to see. For example, when someone comments on your post, it shows up in the Ticker, on that person’s wall under Recent Activity and in the Newsfeed. Only certain types of interactions will qualify as ‘Talking about this’ – those that create a story in one of these three areas. These actions are: • Liking a page

• Posting to a page’s wall • Liking, commenting on or sharing a page post • Answering a question posted • RSVPing to an event • Mentioning a page in a post • Photo-tagging a page • Liking or sharing a check-in deal • Checking in at a place. This is an important number to follow as it shows how many people are exposing your content and your page to others in their network.

Weekly total reach

Just because you have the potential to reach a lot of people (your Friends of Fans number), doesn’t mean your messages will be shared among all of those people. It’s important to know the actual number of people your message has reached each week. The weekly total reach shows how many people have seen any content associated with your page (including any ads or sponsored stories pointing to your page) in the past seven days. Don’t forget to check your performance in these metrics over time to see if you are improving or not. You can also see the correlation between the number of posts you make and the change in your performance. hen it comes to running a successful business, data is the new currency. Accurate and detailed client records are rich resources salon owners can use to their business’s advantage. And fortunately, thanks to advances in the market, this is where salon software’s analytical brain really comes into its own. “Computerised management packages can collect customer data and compile it into comprehensive reports. Salon owners can then use these to learn and understand their customers’ spending habits better – deciding on the best way to communicate uniquely through more accurately targeted marketing techniques.

The right stuff

“Of course, storing accurate client records is paramount in any business – and particularly those within the service sector – as there’s little point in retaining incorrect information. Salon software makes it easier to collect correct and complete data. How? First of all, where available, postcode recognition ensures the house name and number matches to limit any human error when inputting clients’ addresses. Secondly, the programme will prompt the user to input any incomplete customer details, whether they’re checking in appointments or, failing that, paying a bill. Prompts are also there to ensure completeness of data and highlight any information that has been missed. “Getting the contact details of clients right is paramount to business success. Without it, salon owners will be unable to communicate new offers and services or tell them if they’ve moved premises or if a stylist has left. “Accurate and up-to-date client details also help business owners keep abreast of clients’ technical records. This

or an email with a special birthday discount. It’s proven that clients respond positively to incentives. It shows you care and makes the customer feel welcomed, wanted and valued. They become emotionally motivated to keep coming back.

Building loyalty

“With special software, salons can also automatically rate client loyalty depending on how regularly a customer visits the salon, the quantity of retail products they buy and if they turn up to their appointment. This system helps filter out the type of client who’s only looking for a discount and enables you to spend more time and advertising and marketing budget on the type of client that will make a real difference to your business. “Tesco was one of the first businesses to utilise customer data as a means to track customer’s spending habits in order to channel direct marketing. In the first year of Tesco introducing a loyalty card, their turnover increased by 28 per cent. Meanwhile, in the same period, Sainsbury’s turnover was reduced by 16 per cent while it didn’t offer a scheme. “Rewarding loyal clients not only fortifies your relationship with them; it shows how much you appreciate their custom and encourages them to spend with you. Is it their birthday? Then send them a text

“In the same regard that data correlates customer behaviour, it can therefore help to create targeted marketing campaigns through relevant communication tools. For example, would clients prefer receiving information through SMS, email or a good old fashioned letter? A twenty-something client, who probably owns a smart-phone and is an avid Facebook and Twitter user, would probably respond quicker to a text message or a tweet telling them about the latest offers as opposed to a letter. Meanwhile, someone aged 30-plus and in a full time office job would perhaps prefer to receive an email. By choosing to speak to your clients through their preferred methods of communication, you are matching their needs. “Even little details can make a big difference. The fact that salon software can even store the clients’ preferred choice of refreshment will help strengthen your relationship. It shows you pay a genuine interest into their wellbeing. “Data collection isn’t revolutionary – it’s evolutionary. The unlimited benefits offered by modern software programmes allow salons to digitalise their business thus saving time and boosting profit by analysing customers’ spending habits and returns to the salon. saying has interest and variety and we like to include links or pictures as well as sharing or retweeting things that catch our eye. We try to not continually post about ourselves or only talk about salon promotions – the hard sell approach is not right for this forum. We also, of course, never air our dirty laundry in public. “To get it right, you need to consider your audience. If your followers are mainly clients on Facebook and businesses on Twitter then adjust your communications accordingly. Some companies use platforms such as Hootsuite or Tweetdeck, but one size doesn’t fit all if you have a discrepancy in followers across the sites. Try and judge your audience and post accordingly; it may take a few moments more but you’re less likely to lose followers. “With every post, you’ve really got to think about why you’re saying what you’re communicating. Think of it in terms of old school marketing: what’s my message, why am I saying it and who is listening? “On our pages we communicate on various subjects from staff achievements and salon promotions to funny local news, charity events or an interesting link that we’ve seen. We are creating a brand that is more immediate and personal than an advertising campaign. “Another consideration is deciding who is going to undertake the communications when there are clients to see and a business to run. Some businesses hire a third party for this task but there should always be some input from whoever is running the company. If you’re going to do it in-house then make sure there are two people capable in case someone is unavailable. “Although there are little hard costs, there are hidden soft ones. If social networking is going to be effective and accurately represent your brand it needs some attention. This is fine if you have the time but how many salon owners or managers have that luxury? You are also opening yourself up to criticism in a very public domain, which anyone bearing a grudge can take advantage of, so it has to be monitored in case damage limitation is called for. Think of the criticism that Trip Advisor has suffered recently. Also, if you are not in charge of the communication, it means that your brand is in the hands of someone else. From politicians to fashion designers, the web is littered with examples of junior members of staff tweeting or posting something they shouldn’t.”
