an spray tanning cause lung cancer and birth defects? Some scientists in America think that there “seems to be the potential.” And the possible concern has spiralled into the salon industry’s biggest safety debate since the Daily Mail printed an article in March ‘11 pondering whether keratin blow-dries were poisoning clients. The alarm was raised on spray tanning ingredient dihydroxyacetone – or DHA as it’s more commonly known – when American television broadcaster ABC News ran a special bulletin in June. The report said that while the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the chemical back in the ‘70s, it was only tested for external use and that it could pose a danger if inhaled. The news broadcaster enlisted six medical experts to review 10 studies on the effect of DHA on cells. In the televised report they claimed that if the chemical enters the respiratory system and is absorbed into the bloodstream on a regular basis, there’s a potential threat of lung cancer, aggravated asthma, COPD and DNA damage - which could lead to birth defects. The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA), however, was quick to hit back at the claims. It says that the European Commission’s independent expert scientific committee, the SCCS, has reviewed the use of DHA in spray cabins and confirmed it “will not pose a risk to the health of the consumer.” Product houses including St. Tropez and Xen-Tan have also stressed that the manufacture and import of all cosmetics in Europe are covered by strict safety laws and

undergo a stringent assessment process before they can be brought to market. These tests cover all of the separate ingredients and the final product as well as how and where it will be used. Other industry experts claim that the studies date back to 1999 and offer no new facts. Furthermore, they point out that the tests were carried out on mouse cells, bacteria and salmonella – meaning that there’s no evidence linking DHA to any health problems in humans whatsoever. The truth is that the national press loves a safety scandal. Scary stories – with concrete facts or not – sell newspapers. And once a seed has been planted in the minds of many consumers, no matter what the outcome is, the damage for salons and the sector as a whole has already been done. As ever, education remains key. Moreover, ensuring that every precaution is taken by providing protection wear such as nose filters and eye masks as well as a well-ventilated treatment area will help retain the confidence of clients and staff. It seems that a year can’t go by without the press printing yet another hair and beauty horror story. But the important thing is that salon owners are well versed in all industry developments so they can be confident about what’s on their menu. GEMMA WARD, EDITOR

The changing face of beauty: new report reveals booming skincare sector

T

he UK facial skincare market is poised to break the £1 billion barrier next year according to a new report published last month by Mintel and L’Oreal. The research reveals that advancements in the sector are paving the way for increased spending that will lead the industry to surpass a worth of around £1.2 billion by 2015. The ‘Here Comes the Science’ report reveals the increased importance British consumers are placing on their skincare regimes. The category generated £956 million in 2011 and it is set to grow by nearly £50 million by 2013. Vivienne Rudd, head of beauty and personal care insight at Mintel, says: “Key factors in its growth are the continued scientific and marketing innovation in the industry, the discovery of new active ingredients and molecules that go into today’s new generation skincare products

together with a more knowledgeable and informed consumer who now uses a wider range of skincare products and tools tailored to their skin, lifestyle and age.” Key trends that will fuel customer spend over the coming months include bespoke skincare services such as serum blending, new technological developments including ‘Skinchips’ that offer consumers a personalised skincare analysis, and the testing of efficacy against invasive beauty treatments. The report also revealed what drives consumers’ purchasing decisions. Four in ten women (41 per cent) use products that protect their skin from environmental factors while one in ten (nine per cent) actively seek out formulas containing the latest scientific breakthroughs. Clean skin is the biggest motivator for buying skincare products, with 62 per cent citing it as the main reason for buying. Looking after dry skin comes in at a close second

with 56 per cent choosing products for this purpose followed by protection (41 per cent), to look youthful (37 per cent), to fight wrinkles (36 per cent), to target dark circles and age spots (18 per cent) and to tighten slackening skin (13 per cent). Figures also reveal that most women begin thinking about age maintenance as soon as they hit 25-years-old. Today eight per cent of women under that age use anti-ageing products, which jumps to 26 per cent in the 25-34-year-old bracket. The biggest sellers in the skincare category are moisturisers, which account for £249 million, followed by cleansers (£179 million), medicated for products (£77 million), lip salves (£41 million), eye care (£28 million), masks (£10 million) and toners (£9 million). Mintel conducted independent market research for the report with a survey of 2,011 UK female internet users aged 16plus in 2011 and 750 more in 2012.

Toni and Guy summer party raises £26,000 for charity This year’s Toni and Guy Summer Garden party raised a ‘record breaking’ £26,000 for the salon chain’s Charitable Foundation. The organisation works with a number of causes including the Variety Club based at Kings College Hospital, Macmillan Cancer and HABB. Held at Toni and Pauline Mascolo’s Surrey home, over 500 guests – including the couple’s family and friends, Toni and Guy staff from around the country as well as businesses and suppliers – raised money for the charities through a fundraiser auction. Donated lots included a family portrait experience worth £1,500. The money, which joins funds already raised by the company totalling around £700,000, will go towards renovating the Toni and Guy Ward at the Variety Club Children’s Hospital in London.

Bill Shaw named on Queen’s Birthday Honours list

Over two hundred UK hair professionals descended on Birmingham last month for the La Biosthétique Beauty Stylist Awards 2012. Guests attended a champagne reception followed by canapés while networking and watching a host of floor walking Harlequinthemed models, created by the brand’s Creactiv youth team. Two winners and two runners up were selected from 23 cutting and 31 colour photographic entries by an independent judging panel of journalists and industry professionals. Cut competition winner Andrew Wicks of Josef of Switzerland in Guernsey will join colour winner Alice Yarr of the S P Hair Company in Nailsea, Somerset, to represent the UK at the international leg of the competition in Paris next month. The founder of Yorkshire’s largest independent hairdressing company has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. Bill Shaw, the founder and chairman of North England academy group Dimensions, has undergone a career spanning across five decades. He opened his first salon in Barnsley in 1973, which quickly grew to an enterprise of seven branches. The hairdresser then ventured into training and opened a number of academies throughout Yorkshire. Shaw is also the longest serving director of Habia, having been heavily involved in the organisation for over 20 years. Meanwhile he is currently benefactor of the Guild and Treasurer at the Hairdressing Council.

Hair giant ghd selects its first ever Style Squad Sixteen up-and-coming stylists have been handpicked to become ghd’s first ever Style Squad. The successful candidates, who were put through a vigorous live audition process last month and chosen by a judging panel, will now support the hair giant in its consumer-facing events programme across the UK. Around 100 applicants from around the country sent in applications to ghd, which were then short-listed to 28 young stylists. They were then invited to the auditions at the company’s Style Academy in Leeds, where they were asked to re-create their favourite look from AW12’s London Fashion Week on a training head before presenting it to the judges. Among those that made the grade included Eboni Day and Olivia Reeve from Westrow, Mandy Kent from Sean Hanna Bristol and Clipso’s Amie Fletcher and Sam Ashcroft. Salon social Racoon International RAT Pack member and Aberdeen salon owner Amy Donaldson organised a fundraising dinner dance last month to support children’s charity the Archie Foundation. Attendees were asked to wear their wedding dresses for the ‘Big Bridal Bash’ and buy tickets for a raffle with prizes including Jo Malone and John Lewis goodies. The event raised £2,754 in total. British skincare brand Crystal Clear sponsored one of its therapists recently who skydived to raise money for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. Sixty-year-old Barbara Licinio from Beauty at Home in Bournemouth raised over £2,500 for the charity by taking to the skies in memory of her late husband who died after developing the disease. Now under the same business umbrella, staff from the entire John Michael and Headlines Hairdressing groups united recently for the company’s Annual Awards Night and Summer Ball. Around 200 team members from its 13 East Anglia-based salons celebrated their achievements and nine awards were given out across various categories including Apprentice of the Year and Receptionist of the Year. Mahogany Hairdressing’s head of colour, Tai Walker, headed a workshop at London’s Wella Studios last month for this year’s Colour Project Students. The expert hairdresser unveiled the salon’s Duality image collection before demonstrating how he achieved key looks on the models using geometric cutting and colour blending techniques. Ermira Xhafaj from East London’s Newham College was awarded Eve Taylor’s Beauty Student of the Year Award last month as part of the company’s continued expansion and commitment to education within colleges.

Global tennis star Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova took time out of her busy Wimbledon schedule last month to visit the Clay Salon and Spa in Oxshott, Surrey, for a new haircut and colour. The Russian sportswoman was tended to by the salon’s colour technician Kim Shoesmith and owner James Davis who worked together using Milk Shake’s ammonia-free Conditioning Colour and a layering technique to create the bold bright pink style. ust like the cold winter months, hot summer weather – if clients have been lucky enough to experience any – can play havoc on their hair. Just a fortnight abroad on a sun-soaked holiday dipping their locks in and out of chlorinated pools and salty seawater can cause moisture loss, breakage, colour fade and split ends. Richard Ward, owner of his eponymous salon in Chelsea, says this affects the hair’s porosity – leading it to look unhealthy. “It causes damage to the cuticle,” he says. “The cuticle is made up of overlapping scales and that reflect light when shiny and smooth. When the scales are missing or damaged, the hair won’t shine.” Likewise, damage to the internal structure of the hair – the cortex, where chemical processes take place – makes repairing it more difficult. And these conditions are exasperated by the hair’s common enemies: electrical equipment, sun, salt, chlorine and over-processing alongside air conditioning, which makes

the hair more static and dry. Salons around the country then should be advising clients how to regain the vigour of their pre-holiday manes using special cutting techniques, professional colour, in-salon treatments and prescribed after care.

Seasonal change Advising clients to go for a re-style after a summer holiday is a great way to get rid of damaged ends. Ward recommends suggesting short, textured styles that are full of movement such as bobs, crops and cuts that are layered, feminine and strong. He says: “As September sweeps in, long beach-inspired summer hair sweeps out. This annual trend is like a hair migration; something about those straggly, postholiday tresses inspires women all over the country to go for a real departure hair-wise to greet the new season and complement their new wardrobes.” But for clients that want to hold on to as much of their hair as possible, in-salon colour services can be used to breathe

new life into their manes. Ben Cooke and Jonathan Long at London’s Lockonego recommend offering a vegetable or semipermanent colour or glossing service once a month to help keep the hair in premium condition. “Colour fade is one of the biggest problems with porous hair and the ends are the parts that fade first as they’re coloured the most,” they say. “So recommending regular visits to the salon for a trim is essential while semi permanents are great solutions to combat colour fade and liven up the ends to refresh your client’s look.” Ward adds that suggesting a darker shade for winter can be a great way to help the hair look healthier. “Most women want to reflect the key fashion trends by opting for richer colours,” he says. “Darker hair reflects light better, so going for a deeper take on a client’s current tone and a chunky cut to get rid of their aged summer beach hair will make it feel healthier. Advise clients to for a clear colour gloss to add shine and lustre or a vegetable colour glaze.”

This will help seal the cuticle and re-create that healthy looking shine. Nathan

Walker, international technical director at Trevor Sorbie and KeraStraight’s UK ambassador, believes the service is the best way to regain glossy and healthy locks. He says: “Following the ravages of a summer holiday the hair can be left weakened, damaged and frizzy. An ideal solution to all of this is a keratin treatment such as KeraStraight. Home alone While offering clients the best possible service in your care is essential, ensuring they continue the good work at home will always yield the best results. Furthermore, offering recommendations specific to your clients’ needs and hair type will instil trust in your stylist’s service as a professional while boosting your business’s bottom line. Puopolo says: “I always talk about products with my clients as it’s a part of my service. It’s very important to create a

routine of doing this with your clients, as this way they don’t feel as if they are being ‘sold’ to. Always talk about the benefits of a product and why they need to use it. And always be honest, as clients can see through a dishonest salesperson.” For stylists that are apprehensive about offering recommendations, he adds: “If a client isn’t willing to give the products I have recommended a chance, I find it most effective to ask why the are willing to invest so much money in getting their hair coloured and cut, but then not prolong their results with the right products. It is so silly to spend so much money and then wash the results down the drain with a cheaper product that is wrong for their hair.” So even if the British weather is a complete washout, after summer hair care is still essential for clients that have ventured abroad. Moreover, encouraging them to re-invent their style and colour can be a great way to refresh their look and welcome the new season. So encourage your stylists to talk to their clients – their hair will thank you for it.

How to recruit and cultivate outstanding stylists, therapists and managers

A

salon’s team is its best asset. While clients may initially be seduced by a hi-tech website and ultra modern salon interior, when it comes to professional hair and beauty services, substance will always triumph over style. Operating with the best possible team then is the most essential ingredient for a salon’s success. And while choosing individual staff based on their abilities is often key, the right mix of personalities, enthusiasm and a desire to succeed will ultimately create the best team of stylists, therapists, managers and front of

house staff. “A winning team should feed off each other’s energy,” says Ian Davies, owner of Cardiff-based salon group Ocean Hairdressing. “Each member should support the other and recognise everyone’s strengths. They should share a common goal – they should be motivated to better themselves and their salon, and their shard work ethic should bind them together. Moreover, each member should be driven, creative, show initiative and make positive contributions to the success of the salon.” Charles Dodds, owner of Cutting

Room Creative in Leeds, agrees with this viewpoint adding: “Ability ranks highly but dedication and hard work are equally important. My ideal staff member is the type of person who puts their name forward for everything, always sees room for improvement, never complains, is self motivated and has a hunger and passion for their profession.”

The right staff Deciding what personality traits and attitudes are most important for your team is key to selecting the correct people. Because ultimately, running your salon


BUSINESS with staff that share similar goals will create the best possible ‘winning’ attitude and atmosphere. And that drive to succeed will become infectious. For Steve Rowbottom, co-director of the Yorkshire-based Westrow salon group, this recruitment strategy is the only way to go. “What has been key for our business from the start is surrounding ourselves with the right people who share our passion and beliefs and who have an enthusiasm for the craft of hairdressing,” he explains. “To flourish as a business, it’s imperative that everyone combines their efforts to accomplish the same end goal. For this to happen, everyone has to believe in the business and its core values. Everyone is an integral part of the process but their own unique roles must be recognised and rewarded for them to feel intrinsically valued.” Moreover, the last thing any salon owner needs is any trouble in the ranks. So aiming to steer clear of clashing personalities while still appealing to a broad spectrum of clients is equally as imperative. As Leo Bancroft, owner of his eponymous salon in Weybridge, Surrey, points out: “Creating the right balance within the salon means that not only are all client personalities catered for but that there are no in-team collisions. Team members must be compatible with each other to avoid any unnecessary conflicts and misunderstandings.”

building up a reputation in the industry as a salon front-runner will also ensure you get to handpick the best in the business. And better still – they’ll often come to you. “We receive probably in excess of 20 CVs a week at Cutting Room Creative so as soon as a position becomes available we can reach for a list of people who already want to fill that space,” says Dodd. “We have a rule to reply to every single application we receive so that they know we will keep them on file – and we really do. Sometimes a year down the line we may call up a previous applicant to arrange an interview when a vacancy arises.” Bancroft agrees that raising your salon’s reputation in the industry as part of an ongoing business plan is the best way to tempt the best possible staff. He says: “To attract good people, people with ambition, you need to be proactive. An advert

is not enough. Entering business and creative awards, being involved with The Fellowship as well as letting the industry and local press know what you are up to as a team and salon is the best way to attract proactive people to your business.”

Interview success A key part of the team selection process, interviews and trade testing offer the best opportunity to get know any potential employees’ personalities and professional capabilities before making any firm employment decisions. There are various ways of conducting both parts of the process but, ultimately, finding out as much as possible about the candidate and ensuring they follow your goals should be your main aim. “Our recruitment policy ensures we maintain our high standards of service our clients have come know and love,” says Rowbottom. “We look for

Placing an advert with online recruitment agencies and trade magazines is a great place to start, as is using social media and other broader scale internet sites such as Gumtree. However, to really cultivate a winning team, taking on staff that will learn your salon’s culture and philosophies from scratch can often be the best course of action. “We always invest in our individual team members and grow our team organically,” says Davies. “We encourage internal career progression and nurture each team member to achieve success.” Rowbottom agrees, adding: “The greatest staff are those who are bred from youngsters and believe entirely in your salon ethos and the brand.” But if you’re looking for fully trained staff,

professionalism, competitiveness and the desire to achieve across the board. We also look for good communication skills and creative thinking. Potential employees have to undergo a rigid interview process in line with the NVQ procedure. We ensure they are the best people for the job, and possess commitment and a firm understanding of the Westrow brand and beliefs.” Meanwhile, many salon owners profess to having a sixth sense when it comes to choosing the right people that will slot into the team. “I am very good at getting a feel for the person and can tell within a few minutes whether they are right for Cutting Room Creative,” says Dodds. “I make a shortlist and then these applicants will come back for a more in depth interview. I like to be around for these interviews also but I try not to stay in the office and over-face the applicant. We then usually narrow it down to one or two people who we invite back for a trade test, which is a full column of models in the salon. We make our final decision based on the work produced and their potential.” And while ability is a key part of choosing the right person, many salon owners will overlook imperfect work if a desirable personality shines through. As Bancroft says: “Technical skills can

be taught but personality is something you are born with so it is important that the person fits in with the rest of the team. If I am happy with their ability, we have an open informal interview where other members of the existing team get involved. This way we can see how they might work together.”

Cultivating winners Keeping your team happy will minimise staff turnover and help retain equilibrium in the salon. And employing new team members with this goal at the forefront right from the start will ensure a healthy employer-employee relationship. “Communication is key,” says Rowbottom. “So when you are recruiting, make sure you are open and honest about what will be expected from your new employees. Recognise that the same things don’t always motivate people and that each individual has an intrinsic role to play in the success of the salon.” Of course the best way to achieve this is by setting out clear expectations from both sides at the beginning of employment. “Prospective new staff members need to be shown the opportunities they can be offered in terms of training and a clear wage structure,” adds Dodds. “We detail very precisely – usually on the day we

make a job offer – exactly what their wage will be and how it will be made up. New staff coming into the industry relish being shown in detail about our training program and a clear route to how they can achieve their goals too.” And once you have your A-Team in place, encouraging each member to develop their skills and grow as a salon professional will ensure that they continue to feel satisfied in their work. For many top salon owners, this is the secret to retaining a strong alliance of staff. According to Dodds, investing in an ongoing education strategy will reap many long-term rewards. “Employing staff with potential and creativity is obviously the first step but thereafter frequent evaluation, appraisals, giving feedback and then subsequent training are key to ensuring your team reaches its full potential. This will in turn help raise the bar in your salon, but will also help you retain your staff when they see how much time and effort you are willing to invest in their future.” Bancroft concludes: “Your team needs to know they belong. They need to feel secure and part of the salon’s success. By being open with them and involving them in the salon running they will take more ownership and invest more into their clients and the business.”

ocial media offers relationship-building opportunities that are virtually limitless. And through the use of these ever-expanding platforms, salon owners can gain access to a wealth of invaluable information, prospects and alliances both nationally and internationally. Moreover, signing up to the sites that sit alongside your branding can be an extremely powerful way to promote your salon and services by getting the message delivered to clients across all available news feeds.

Tina Rook, head of Saks Education, reveals the story behind one of the company’s brightest emerging hair stars

ethany Stones chose to train as a hairdresser with Saks Education when she left school at 16; just two years later and she is already set for great things. Business as usual? Stuart Holmes discusses the impending effects of this month’s Olympics

“W

hat effect will the Olympic Games have on your business this summer? It is an unknown quantity and as a once in a lifetime event for many of us, it is very difficult to predict what is going to happen in terms of demand levels during the two-week period. “From salons in Central London to those elsewhere in the UK, this global sporting event could have one of three effects for businesses: no change, a surge in demand, or a fall in appointments and takings. “At the time of going to print, our diary was looking only marginally quieter than what I would normally expect for this time of year and I put this down to the Olympics. Lots of our clients have tickets to go to events and will be making a special trip to London especially for the games. “On top of that people are uncertain about the actual grip the Olympics is going to have on the nation when it starts, so as a result are leaving their plans relatively fluid over the two weeks and are delaying booking their hair and beauty appointments “Depending on where you are in the UK will depend on what effect this massive sporting event will have. “There is no doubt that London salons will feel the abnormal demand levels more than those outside of the capital. “Of course, London is going to be jam-packed with visitors but that may not necessarily equate to more client bookings for hair and beauty services. The Olympics may be a glamorous occasion but are the likes of the Fijian judo team really going to

be booking in for blow-dries ahead of the Opening Ceremony? And how many spectators are really going to want to be coiffed before heading down to the Olympic Park? “My view is that unlike going to other events, sporting occasions such as the Olympics do not necessarily constitute a special trip to the salon.

“On top of that, your regular clients – the normal Londoners – may be giving the city a wide berth and limiting their journeys and appointments during the two week Olympic “I did some detailed research while writing this piece and spoke to a number of other salon owners. Like for us at The Stuart Holmes Hair and Beauty Spa,

there is no huge change in appointment numbers year-on-year. If anything, people are saying they’re marginally quieter. However, at the time of going to print, we are still two weeks out and as we all know, a lot can happen in a salon diary in a fortnight! “The thing is no one really knows what effect this global event is going to have on salons. But I get the feeling it wont have too much of an effect at all. People may delay their appointments by a few weeks here or there but overall they will still be walking through the doors at some stage. “What we have to do as business owners is make sure that we are thinking through the potential consequences of the Olympics and minimising them as much as possible. “We use a great deal of e-marketing within our salon to communicate with clients that we are open for business as usual. Consider adopting this tool as a way of highlighting to your database any last minute availability during the Olympics. Also, where you know of travel issues nearby to your premises, pass on your tips to clients to ensure they can still reach you with minimum hassle. We are really looking forward to the Olympics at The Stuart Holmes Hair and Beauty Spa and we hope you enjoy it as much as I’m sure we will.
