012 has been an eventful year. There have been some amazing highs (the Olympics and Diamond Jubilee) and some terrible lows (saying goodbye to Vidal Sassoon). So as we come to an end of one of Britain’s most important years in modern times, we’ve put together a special commemorative feature – starting on page 52 – looking back on some of the news that shook the industry. While we’ve been remembering the past 12 months, looking ahead to a bright future also played a pivotal role in devising the contents for this issue. As the industry waits with baited breath to hear the results of this year’s British Hairdressing Awards later this month, we wanted to offer some inspiration for those contemplating entering any competition in 2013. And what better way than by picking the brains of some previous winners? From finding the best models on a budget to masterminding an original idea that will really make your entry standout, turn to page 48 to learn some winning tips from the best of the best. But before we welcome in the New Year, Christmas is nearly here. And the entire month of December provides a throng of opportunities for all salons. By the time you read this, clients will have already began their festive shopping and the party season will be in full swing. With this in mind, we’ve endeavoured to help inspire your creatively this month with a range of easy-read pieces including our annual festive feature on hot

Speaking of quick fixes, we’ve also been on the hunt this month for the industry’s best facials that offer surgery-inspired results using a non-invasive approach. Hi-tech beauty services are essential for a successful modern day salon menu and unlike the yesteryear, such treatments are no longer the reserve of clinics and doctors. Sean Hanna celebrates 30-year business milestone with glittering London awards ceremony

S

outh England salon group Sean Hanna celebrated the success of its team while marking its thirtieth year in business with a glittering awards ceremony in London. Held inside Camden’s Koko, around 1,000 attendees including loyal clients and 250 team members flocked to the event to discover the names of the company’s leading salons, stylists and colourists. Owner Sean Hanna, who set the company up with is first salon in Surrey’s Worcester Park in 1982, was joined by a variety of high profile industry names and journalists to present the awards. Among the hosts included creative director Skyler McDonald, Marie Claire’s Olivia Cox,

ghd’s national accounts manager Janine Chapman and L’Oreal’s Anya Haarhoff. Fourteen awards were up for grabs for both individuals and complete salon teams. Lucie Monbillard from the Putney branch cleared up in the Creative Image Awards category winning all three gongs for Avant Garde, Colourist and Stylist. Meanwhile, her colleague Lisa Jane Massey also won Stylist of the Year and Retail Stylist of the Year. The Bristol branch, managed by Adam Vincent, also triumphed – taking home the overall Salon of the Year award. The salon’s Jodie Brain also took home Trainee Creative Image of the Year, Victoria Bowyer won the People’s Choice Award, Charlotte Southward was given the Edward

Bywaters Award while Samantha Lynn was named Receptionist of the Year. In addition to the awards ceremony, attendees were also treated to an inspirational catwalk presentation that showcased the group’s hairdressing talents. Underpinned by a ‘metamorphosis’ theme, the team created a range of looks live on stage capturing a range of transformations. “It evening was just wonderful,” comments Hanna. “I loved our show – we’ve had awesome feedback from it and it was really great fun. Moving forward, we are excited about developing our education and opening our advanced academy. We’re also looking at new sites for our next salon.”

INDUSTRY UPDATE Taylor Taylor named capital’s best salon at the London Lifestyle Awards 2012 Shoreditch’s Taylor Taylor was named London Hairdressing Salon of the Year at the recent Hot Diamonds London Lifestyle Awards while the Langham Hotel’s Chuan Spa took home the title of Health and Beauty Facility of the Year. Competition was rife in both categories with East London’s Taylor Taylor triumphing over several high profile contenders including Jones and Payne, Errol Douglas, Jo Hansford and Stuart Philips. Meanwhile, runners-up in the Health and Beauty category included Gina Conway, Leticia Haute Coiffure, St Pancras Spa and the Westminster Park Plaza’s Mandara Spa. Over 550 guests – including Dame Kelly Holmes, Christopher Biggins and Sinitta – attended the event to find out the winners of 18 categories. They were treated to a three-course dinner and entertainment from Peter Grant and Rebecca Poole.

La Biosthetique names winners of Young Total Beauty Awards French hair and cosmetics brand La Biosthetique celebrated Britain’s best emerging talent recently with its Young Total Beauty Awards. The annual nationwide competition is open to hairdressers under the age of 25 and entrants submit a photographic entry before being short-listed and judged live. This year’s winner was Danielle Cheston from Sheffield’s Hunky Dory, who created a technical avant-garde up-do. Dickson Reid Hairdressing uses Edinburgh Online Fashion Week to showcase its stylists’ talents via internet video The creative team at Scotland’s Dickson Reid Hairdressing created a range of statement styles last month for the inaugural Edinburgh Online Fashion Week. Partnering with Sexy Hair and Ego Professional, the stylists worked on models for 15 pre-recorded presentations showcasing collections by up-and-coming graduates, established designers and high street chains. INDUSTRY UPDATE Salon owner launches “hair and beauty industry’s answer to Trip Advisor” A hair and beauty salon owner is launching a new website this month that is being hotly touted as “the Trip Advisor of the salon industry.” Koulla Swann’s new site Trustedsalon.com offers a rankings-based salon search facility that connects businesses with new and existing clients. Through its pages, clients will be able to hunt for reputable salons – using “honest and fair consumer reviews” – while businesses will be able to use it as a tool for promoting their services and special offers. Its creator says it puts salon owners in full control as a quality assurance team checks each feedback form before it is posted and gives businesses time to investigative negative reviews to put the situation right or post a reply at the same time. “After more than 25 years in the professional hairdressing and beauty industry, I have gained an intimate knowledge of the needs of salon owners,” says Swann. “Together with my husband, we have developed …the 2013 Hair Awards. Aveda’s global masters hit Berlin for this year’s Master Jam

Over 1,000 hair and beauty professionals from across the globe descended on Berlin last month for Aveda’s annual Master Jam event. Uniting the brand’s global masters in hairdressing live on stage, artistic presentations featured work by the likes of Ray Civello and members of the Canadian Artistic Team – Tristin Morrison, Morgan Roy and Marta Murray – who presented a range of styles from red Shirley Temple curls to a black Twiggy crop. The Aveda Global Artistic Team, which comprised of Ian Michael Black, Janell Geason, Allen Ruiz and Ricardo Dinis, presented Aveda’s new Neo Goth collection for AW12. Salon social The founder of North England academy group Dimensions received an MBE last month after being named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. Bill Shaw, Habia’s longest serving director, travelled down to Buckingham Palace from Yorkshire with his family to be honoured for his 40-year service to hairdressing.

Following Peter Mark’s annual Hairstyle Awards, Ladies Full Fashion winner Edita Andonova from the company’s Dublin branch was rewarded with two days of education with Akin Konizi. Held at Hob Salons’ London Academy, the stylist received invaluable expert training from the three-time British Hairdresser of the Year alongside team members Andrea Martinelli and Darren Bain. KMS California sent a flash mob of 30 professional dancers to Salon International’s main foyer to entertain the crowds and promote the brand. The performers wore branded t-shirts while dancing to a mash-up of six hair-related songs. Haringtons Soho stylists Tom Harrigan and Emma Turner won the Redken NYC Men’s Styling Award last month. The pair beat off stiff competition from regional finalists from across the UK with their urban dandy themed entry winning a trip to New York as part of their prize. The Salon Magazine columnist Stuart Holmes joined key policy makers and leading employers last month for an event at Buckingham Palace to help champion apprenticeships in the UK. During the proceedings, the National Apprenticeship Service and The Duke of York announced a commitment to formally recognise and celebrate the achievements of work-based learners. The aim is to ensure apprentices are recognised with the same level of prestige as university graduates.

The right accolade can open the doors to streams of opportunities; even adding ‘award winning’ to the beginning of a name is a guaranteed money-spinner. So this month, we’ve asked the industry’s most successful competitors to dust off their trophy cabinet and spill the beans on what makes a winner…

ways to win industry competitions Swot up on these top expert tips to make 2013 your year as a winner DON’T EXPECT TO WIN THE FIRST TIME Entering industry competitions can be an expensive and time consuming process. However, rather than focusing on winning the first time you enter, use the experience to hone your skills and learn about competing. Hob Salons’ Akin Konizi, who has won British Hairdressing’s British Hairdresser of the Year for three years in a row, says: “Do not expect to win the first competition you enter. Sometimes simply putting your entry together is the growth you need to see what it takes to win. You must have determination and be prepared to work very hard to gain any title.”

LOOK OUTSIDE FOR INSPIRATION In creative competitions, creating an awe-inspiring look that stands out from thousands of other applicants is imperative. And while looking to industry peers for inspiration is a great resource, those that win have often created something completely different. Cutting Room Creative’s Charles and Karen Dodds, who have won a whole host of awards including a place in British Hairdressing’s Hall of Fame, Fellowship Salon Group of the Year and Mizani Catwalk Image of the Year, recommend looking outside of the box: “For all our winning shoots we looked outside hairdressing for imagery that inspired us. This included film, theatre, fashion and even architecture as we nearly always use different backdrops for our images. Our favourite shoot – which won out third BHA – was shot on location in a burnt out loft.”

BE ORIGINAL If you don’t have thousands of pounds to invest in a shoot – don’t be deterred. It isn’t necessarily about how much budget you have to spend but

often more about creating an original idea. “Winning isn’t about throwing money at a photo shoot,” says Zullo and Holland’s Angelo Vallillo, who won this year’s Hair Magazine Salon Stylist award and East Midland Salon of the Year 2012. “Absolutely, you need the best model you can afford, but you also need to look forward and innovate. Don’t copy, instead be creative; play to your strengths so you are confident enough to let the creativity flow and then you will produce something beautiful and original.”

DO YOUR RESEARCH The best competitors always spend months researching ideas and planning their entry. Whether you’re competing in a live competition, creating a photographic entry or putting together a written salon portfolio, it always pays to invest heavily in preparation time. Sean Hanna’s Skyler MacDonald, who has previously won British Hairdressing’s London Hairdresser of the Year and a Creative Head Most Wanted award, says: “I always dedicate time to exposing myself to influences and references that

could be relevant to my shoot. I tend to work with multiple mood-boards – so one for hair, one for make up, one for styling and another for photographic references. A huge amount of research is now done online of course but I still print off my references.” Robert Masciave, owner of Metropolis and past winner of the L’Oreal Colour Trophy, also recommends researching the competition itself thoroughly. He says: “Entering competitions is a complex process which needs a lot of attention to detail. You need to know the competition inside out – I always look back on past winners and entries making notes of all the details including clothes, models and make-up artists.”

CAST THE PERFECT MODEL Choosing the best model – within budget – is one of the most important aspects of creating a winning photographic entry. And while the best of the best can cost thousands of pounds, it is possible to find ‘new faces’ that still offer a high fashion look and want to build their portfolio


BUSINESS for little or no cost. “When it comes to choosing models I get inspiration from the latest fashion runways,” says Masciave. “You can’t go wrong if you follow the top designers’ lead.” Bob Salon’s Roberto Schirru, winner of this year’s L’Oreal Colour Trophy Men’s Image Award, adds: “Your model is key so street cast all the time and ensure that they’re available for each part of the competition. Once you’ve researched your look ensure that it’s right for them as it’s essential that they’re comfortable in the styling and can carry it off with confidence.”

CHOOSE THE BEST TEAM Selecting the right people to make your creative vision happen is essential when entering competitions – particularly in the photographic variety when winning doesn’t just rest on your own area of expertise. “Having the right team around you makes a huge difference,” says MacDonald. “I ideally try and get the very best experts in each field that I am working in. They need to be focused on helping you achieving the best images – it has to matter to them as much as it does to you. Each person has to completely understand what the outcome should be – this is why the mood boards are so important so you can visually engage everyone.”

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT It may seem like an obvious recommendation, but practising and perfecting every look you are going to submit is essential for ensuring you’re the very best you can be for any competition. Akin konizi says: “Prepare all of your looks.

Make sure you know how to get to the final result and that you’re skilled enough to create the best possible styles. Practice, practice, practice!”

PLAN EVERY SHOT FIRST In photographic competitions, having a pre-planned idea of how every shot will look can make it easier to achieve the results you want. “A lot of people shoot their look and then try and work out how it should look; but as much as possible, I try to plan out exactly what my end shot will look like,” says MacDonald. “This includes the angle, the mood, how I will print it and how I will crop it before I even start the shoot. It doesn’t always go to plan but things definitely go better when I have the focused direction before I commence shooting.”

GIVE YOURSELF PLENTY OF TIME Rather than making a snap decision about entering an award, the experts recommend planning early for the best

results. And this is highly important in competitions that warrant written entries with portfolios and supporting evidence. “Like a cheese, an entry takes time to mature and develop into something tasty for the judges,” says salon owner Barrie Stephen, who has won a range of accolades including Best Local Salon at the Hair Magazine Awards and British Hairdressing’s Best Retail Salon. “Choose your category well in advance and for six months prior to the deadline purposely tailor all your PR and salon activity to support the entry criteria so you have examples for the judges. Thinking early will also give you time to collate testimonials, interview the team for quotes, and get information from accountants – especially if it’s a business-themed entry – to really make sure your submission is robust in every way.”

SET GOALS If you give yourself enough time, setting goals to ensure your entry is the best it can be will help give you the best possible chance of winning. Rainbow Room International’s George Square, who recently led the team to victory at Creative Head’s Most Wanted Awards with Best Salon Team as well as Salon Team of the Year at the British Hairdressing Business Awards, says: “Set your team goals bearing in mind the criteria for the awards you are looking to enter. You know if the award is looking for growth and marketing evidence then this is something you must work on. And monitor your goals throughout the year – make sure and look back at what you have achieved and what is still need to be done.”

BUSINESS competition, there’s no reason why you can’t still be creative with your submission. After all, you still need to stand out among lots of other salons. Angelo Vallillo says: “Some competitions are written entries and that can be a bit intimidating. But if you are going beyond the norm, producing beautiful work, contributing to your local community and educating the young, then shout about it in your entry. It’s an opportunity to tell the industry why you are doing so well. Get help with the writing, be innovative with the layout, use pictures to illustrate and get testimonials from clients and peers.”

CHOOSE TALENTED TEAM MEMBERS Salon owners that have talented creative team members should encourage them to enter awards that suit their skill set. While winning accolades as a salon is valuable, pushing the best members forward will still raise your business profile while boosting team morale. “Winning awards can really raise your profile internally and externally,” says Sally Montague, director at the eponymous hair group. “Angel MontagueSayers, who won the Fashionista award in Creative Head’s 2012 It List, has secured an agent and her own course with L’Oreal – bringing editorially-inspired hair to the salon – since winning the award. But none of this happens by chance and if you’re going to enter or put one of your staff forward for an award, it’s important to ensure that they have the discipline to really make it work for the business if they’re successful.”

PREPARE TO SUCCEED Particularly during live competitions where your work and the end result will be scrutinised by judges in the flesh, preparation is absolutely vital. Without it you won’t be able to compete to your highest standards, so there is no point in trying to cut corners. Nail Harmony UK’s MD George Smedley, who has won various nail industry accolades over her career and also judges competitions, says: “Everything has to be meticulously planned from start to finish. This includes what’s in your kit, your model, your technique and your competition design; and then practice, practice, practice and when you think you’re through with practising, practice some more. You also need to include an understanding of the

competition rules in your preparation.”

FOCUS ON DETAILS When it comes to creative competitions, it’s important to do your homework. “Our winning entry this year for the L’Oreal Colour Trophy was classic, clean, forward-thinking and luxurious,” says Westrow’s director Steve Rowbottom. “However we backed this up with extensive fashion and colour knowledge and offered the judges an unique insight into the Westrow world with a specially designed book charting the journey of the team, their inspirations and how they achieved their look. It’s the details that count, and by offering a 360-degree view of your entry, judges can fully engage with your thought process and gain a thorough understanding of you and your business.”

INVEST IN A CAMERA In today’s fast-paced and highly visual world, a decent camera that can document all your business highs is one of the best investments you can make for winning competitions. “Always have a camera with you and keep a spare one in the salon too so you can log everything,” says Stephen. “This includes the big events, the great photo opportunities with clients and the more spontaneous daily moments which can give an amazing insight into salon life. Visuals bring an entry to life and it’s not all about the words. A brilliant photo can communicate so much.”

GET A SECOND OPINION Everyone has an opinion and even if they don’t know much about hair and beauty, friends and family members can be a great resource to bounce ideas. “Nonsalon professionals are great when it comes to awards,” says Stephen. “Invite friends to read your entry and ask for their input and opinions. You want to get the message across to the judges quickly and succinctly in an appealing way, so outside feedback is really good for keeping you on track. If a person from outside of the industry understands and likes it then you know you’ve done your job.”

SELECT THE RIGHT COMPETITION Winning high profile awards are great for any business. But picking and choosing

the right competitions that will help you reach your business goals mean any financial investment is hopefully money well spent. “Home in on what is best for your business before deciding which competitions you’re going to do,” says Vallillo. “If you want to attract more male clients, then target men’s competitions. If you want to build your relationship with your supplier, invest in entering their competitions. Focusing on the end result makes it easier to formulate your ideas and develop the finished look.”

AIM TO OUTSHINE PAST WINNERS Although being innovative and original is always a recipe for competition success, looking at the work of previous winners can help you determine exactly what the judging panel is looking for. “Looking at past winners will give you a great insight into what the industry is looking for in an entrant and of course a winner,” says Square. “Think about what was unique about them and what you do differently that will really help you stands. Use past winners as a benchmark for what you want to achieve and more.”

LASTLY, REMEMBER WHY YOU’VE ENTERED Focusing on the reasons you want to enter a competition in the first place can really aim motivation and keep your team on track. “The buzz that ensues within your business after winning awards of this stature is an invaluable tool for both staff and clients,” says Rowbottom. “It generates confidence, encourages higher standards and helps to motivate existing employees, while attracting a better calibre of new ones. It also positions the brand as a market leader in its field.”

Announced in December ’11, Hob Salons began 2012 on a high after scooping a triple hat trick at the British Hairdressing Awards. The London-based group wiped the floor winning Artistic Team of the Year, British Colour Technician of the Year and British Hairdresser of the Year – all for the third time. Director Akin Konizi, who is now in the BHA Hall of Fame for British Hairdresser, said at the time: “Words cannot describe how proud the team at Hob Salons is to be recognised as the best in Britain, and we look forward to flying the flag for British hairdressing over the next year. Thank you to everyone for their amazing support.”

Veteran hairdressers Charlie Miller and Peter Collinge both received OBEs in the Queen’s New Year 2012 Honours List in recognition for their services to hairdressing. Miller, who celebrated 50 years in the business in 2009, was the first Scottish hairdresser to be given the accolade. His chain of Edinburgh based salons have won a host of awards since the first one opened in 1965 while the hairdresser has also received many awards for his individual work. Meanwhile Collinge, who has spent over 70 years in hairdressing, opened his first salon in Liverpool in 1952 and established a renowned training programme for stylists. Today he is chairman for family business Andrew Collinge Hairdressing.

FIT FOR A QUEEN

Ian Carmichael, creative director at The Dorchester hotel’s Royston Blythe salon, received a Royal Warrant this year as Her Majesty The Queen’s personal hairdresser. The stylist, who has been the Queen’s personal hairdresser for 14 years, coordinates regular visits to Buckingham Palace with his salon clientele and plays a prominent role in all Royal occasions.

fter a gluttonous Christmas when people party and spend hard, January can turn into a month that is hard to get excited about in business terms. “Salon teams work exceedingly hard in December and retail and service revenues have the potential to jump through the roof. But come the New Year when festive frenzy has passed, salon owners need to have their next marketing plan ready to roll out to ensure revenues are protected. There is nothing better for staff motivation than to have a record month to kick off the New Year. Having a quiet January on the other hand simply adds to the Christmas hangover. “Marketing plans for January need to be signed off and lined up for activation by mid-December. Therefore, when you return from the festivities, the only thing you will have to worry about is shifting those extra pounds acquired through

indulging on too many mince pies. “The January sale is synonymous with the retail industry yet not many in the salon industry translate this into a sale on services. At The Stuart Holmes Hair and Beauty Spa, we do. Our annual January sale has become almost as famous as those in major department stores. We use it as a way of encouraging our clients to get out and about again and spending on themselves. “We launch our sale around January 5 and it is branded similarly to how shops brand their sales. We ditch our traditional luxurious brand colours and opt for red and white in all sale communications. It may be garish. It may not be on ‘brand’ with our usual marketing communications. But this campaign is about impact and getting people in through the door. “We make our sale work for us. We only offer the discount on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays. It also tends not to be valid with our senior staff as their appointment diaries continue to flourish no matter what time of year it is. “Our offering varies year on year but we have found the most successful January sale was when we offered a £60 cut and colour. And this was valid on a half head colour, t-section or natural glossing. “We have been running our January sale for three years and now annually find we are fully booked on the days we run it. We promote it to our client database through an emailer as well as through local

newspapers and magazines. We also do an element of online advertising to really push our message across. “When you are in salon management, making the most out of potentially quieter times requires simple yet well thought-out planning. As we look forward to 2013, I would urge salon owners to take a good strategic look at their peaks and dips in demand year on year. Try to identify the quieter months from 2012 and ensure your marketing campaigns for 2013 focus on boosting client numbers during that period. Strictly professional In the first instalment of his new column, St. Tropez’s Jules Heptonstall reveals his hectic weekend schedule behind the scenes of Strictly Come Dancing

“S

unless tanning has become one of today’s backstage essentials. And with reality television shows airing for anything up to three months with long hours and punishing schedules, it can take a significant toll on the contestants’ skin. So for the likes of the stars of Strictly Come Dancing, a tan isn’t just about a hit of holiday colour: it’s about disguising the signs of a gruelling twelve-week competition. “This year is my first working backstage as the show’s lead skin professional. And with the brightly coloured costumes and strong studio lights, keeping the celebrities’ and dancers’ tans topped up is almost as important as the dancing itself. Well, in my head it certainly is! “Every Friday we pop-up a booth backstage and spray the dancers and contestants after their studio rehearsals. We only have ten minutes to tan each person – so being extremely organised is

essential. While one person tans the other locates the next celebrity or dancer, gets them prepped and then changed into a robe. As the tanner finishes with client number one, the next is ready to begin their treatment. It’s almost like a tanning factory line. “As any tanner is aware, week-onweek treatments can lead to a build up of colour – especially on the legs, neck and underarms. So it’s important for us to stress the importance of daily moisturising for tan upkeep and make sure our clients are using the right products to remove any build up before the next application. “On the Saturday afternoon and evenings we are then on hand to add the finishing touches to their tans. This usually includes applying St. Tropez Skin Illuminators and Shimmer Stick to contour the body and give contestants that all important sparkle for their moment under the spotlight. On occasion we will apply an additional layer of wash-off tan to the

legs and arms to give the skin an added depth in colour without any additional tan build up. We also contour the bodies to give them more definition, paying special attention to the legs, arms and backs. “Occasionally we will apply a full body tan using our wash-off products (you couldn’t use self tan as it would start to develop and get darker as the night went on – risky business when it’s live television). You may remember a few weeks ago when Fearn Britton’s partner Artem Chigvintsev danced topless? He missed his tanning slot due to a photo shoot and so the tan you saw was applied in ten minutes with St. Tropez Wash-Off Mousse – my life saviour. “See you next month for more tanning tales.” Jules Heptonstall is St. Tropez’s VIP and celebrity tanning expert and has worked backstage on various television shows including The X Factor, Take Me Out: The Gossip and Strictly Come Dancing.

List the names of all the people you’d like to buy for, determine how much money you can realistically afford to spend on Christmas in total and then allocate a set portion for each person.

If you go shopping alone you are less likely to be persuaded to buy yourself something or dip into your Christmas shopping budget to go for lunch.

In the palm of their hands How to ask for your clients’ email addresses so you can communicate wherever they are, explains Linkup Marketing’s Valorie Reavis

E

mail marketing is one of the most important ways to communicate with clients. It’s easy and cheap for the salon and research shows lots of people prefer it. It helps manage clients’ appointment schedules with confirmations while it builds awareness and drives new business with special offers and newsletters. But even though everyone knows this and you are probably nodding your head as you read, it’s still too awkward for many salon owners to ask clients for their email address. Yet you can’t have a successful email programme without a healthy database and you can’t have a database if you don’t ask for email addresses. However, you’ll be happy to know that there are ways of obtaining this vital information without the hard sell…

it every time you ask for a client’s address. If you have it online, make sure to there’s a link to this policy and assure them that you will never abuse or share their information. Alongside that disclaimer should also be a note about what they will be receiving from you in their inbox. Mention how often you’ll be sending it and what you’ll be sending, then make sure that you don’t deviate from this plan without their permission.

The best way to build up a database of email addresses is to be consistent in your approach. Ask every client for their address no matter what and make sure you ask at the same time every time. This will then become part of a script for you and help you broach the subject.

It might sound really appealing to just buy a list and start emailing, but it’s not a method that’s advisable for a long-term programme. Sure, you can go ahead and send an email trying to get potential clients to come and see you as you build your column, but don’t blend them with your email clients that have given you permission and are expecting your communications.

Client information cards Your first visit with a client should always begin by filling out a client information card. There you should be asking them for contact details including an email address and key marketing information such as their age, birthday and occupation.

Be up-front and honest Have a privacy policy for your email programme and ensure that you mention
