BareMinerals to reignite the real beauty debate with ‘revolutionary’ global marketing campaign shot by Rankin
U
S mineral make-up brand BareMinerals has unveiled its first global marketing campaign featuring models cast entirely for their personalities. Dubbed ‘Be A Force of Beauty’, the campaign centres on images of five women – shot by British photographer Rankin – and will be used around the globe to promote the brand’s ethos that “beauty can change the world.” Inspired by the notion that ‘beauty is as beauty does’, around 300 models and actresses were hidden behind a screen during a blind casting last summer before undergoing a selection process based on the merits of their characters alone. The idea is said to be ‘revolutionary’ to the beauty industry and BareMinerals hopes it will highlight the symbolic relationship between confidence and
beauty. Meanwhile the brand says it plays tribute to the millions of women that already use its products and hopes it will engage others and further ignite the debate over what defines real beauty. “Celebrating women isn’t new for us; it’s who we are and what we do. It’s always been more than a philosophy, it’s really our DNA,” explains the brand’s creator Leslie Blodgett. “We have a responsibility to not just tell a singular story of beauty, but rather share in the collective spirit of women around the globe.” Simon Cowell, global CMO, comments: “We wanted ‘Be a Force of Beauty’ to not only be relevant, but also tangible for women around the world. We acknowledge that there is real power and potential in beauty and it’s our role to inspire women and serve as advocates to showcase the cultural impact beauty can
have on humanity.” He adds: “‘Be a Force of Beauty’ really sums up our brand anthem and pays tribute to the legacy we’ve already established.” The move echoes fellow beauty brand Dove’s attempts to prompt consumers to question preconceived physical ideals in the media. Its Dove Campaign for Real Beauty, also shot by Rankin, launched in 2004 to mixed reviews from both consumers and the press. The first iteration of ‘Be A Force of Beauty’ will roll out in the UK this spring while videos and information has already gone live on the brand’s website – Bareminerals.co.uk. The campaign will be supported by print, digital and social marketing throughout Europe and seeks to provoke discussions and ‘motivate women into action.’

INDUSTRY UPDATE Charlie Miller and Peter Collinge both receive OBEs for their services to hairdressing Veteran hairdressers Charlie Miller and Peter Collinge have both received OBEs in the Queen’s New Year 2012 Honours List in recognition for their services to hairdressing. Miller, who celebrated 50 years in the business in 2009, is the first Scottish hairdresser to be presented with the accolade. His chain of Edinburgh-based salons have won a host of awards since the first one opened its doors in 1965. The hairdresser has also received a series of gongs for his personal work as well as attracting an impressive list of celebrity clients including the likes of Sean Connery. In 1998 Miller turned his focus around from hairdressing to the company’s marketing, PR and business development and since 2007, he has been committed to personally cutting and styling wigs for Teenage Cancer Trust teenagers and young people undergoing treatment for the disease. Meanwhile Collinge, who has spent over 70 years in hairdressing, opened his first salon in Liverpool in 1952. He later established a training programme for North West stylists in the ‘70s before handing over the reigns to his children Andrew, Sarah and Liz. Today the business, now named Andrew Collinge Hairdressing, has branches in Liverpool, Manchester, Chester and Lancashire including two academies that train around 100 apprentices a year. He says: “Investing in young people and providing them with great training has been the backbone of our company and made it strong. We have trained thousands of hairdressers over the years, some have worked for us and others have opened their own salons. I am proud to have contributed in this way.”
Capital gains
Award winning hairdresser Jamie Stevens is to open his first London salon with his sister, Tasha Stevens, as manager. The two-storey space will be based in Kensington and is set to open this March. Stevens will leave his current position with Errol Douglas for the new venture.

Grooming entrepreneur Jason Shankey opens fourth salon inside Belfast’s House of Fraser Northern Ireland’s Belfast is now home to three Jason Shankey salons after the grooming entrepreneur opened his fourth salon inside the House of Fraser in the city centre. Shankey created his first luxury male grooming centre in London in 1997 and has since grown his enterprise through franchising. Last year he also launched the brand’s own hair and skincare line, which is now sold through prestigious outlets such as Harrods. The new top of the range concession salon, which will offer the same menu of services as his other stores, has created six new jobs for Belfast after an investment of £50,000. Aveda salons and stylists around the globe are preparing for April’s Earth Month 2012 to raise funds and awareness about the world’s water crisis. Now in its thirteenth year, the brand is aiming to raise $4.5 million for the campaign to protect clean water, which nearly 900 million people worldwide fight for every day. Key fundraisers include the profits made from sales of its Light the Way Earth Month Candle (RRP £16) and donations collected via its sponsored five-mile Aveda Walk for Water event, set to take place in numerous locations across the globe on 23 April. Since 1999 the Aveda network has raised more than $22 million to support organisations that directly affect environmental change while $16 million of this total has been earmarked for waterrelated causes. For the sixth consecutive year, the brand will partner with the Global Greengrants Fund to provide grants for community-based water projects in more than 40 countries.

Salon social Bonce Hair Salons supported its local Salvation Army recently by collecting donated tins of food for the charity to distribute at Christmas. Beginning the crusade in October, both salons – located in Walsall and Wednesbury – raised over £800 worth of non-perishables to create food parcels for those in need.

Fashion designer Stéphane Rolland called upon the hairdressing talents of the Brooks and Brooks artistic team recently for a charity show. Led by Valerie Benavides and Ben Moth, they created silky hair on a series of models for a catwalk show held during a fundraising dinner event for children’s heart disease charity Chair of Hope. Sanrizz’s Robert Kirby got involved with Noel’s Christmas Presents show on Sky One last month by offering guest Di Bradley a luxury VIP appointment at the company’s Grosvenor House salon complete with champagne, a dedicated red carpet and private room. The Chapel’s artistic director Gary Russell led a training course for the Clubstar Art Team recently focusing on how fashion meets hairdressing. The six attendees were shown how to ‘think outside the box’ and use their own personal inspiration to create new ideas. Over 50 salon owners attended the first UK congress for the Society Française de Biosthetique last month in Warrington. Attendees were given seminars from a series of keynote speakers offering business-boosting ideas which were followed by a hair show from the society’s under 25s artistic tream, Creactiv.

Both clients sit together and have a glass of champagne to toast the occasion.” Alternatively, if you’re looking for services that make appealing single gifts, relaxation spa-like therapies are a sure-fire winner – especially for older mothers with grown up children and more time on their hands. Likewise Vicky Stothard, owner of London’s Independent Mindbodysoul, has built the Balham branch of her salon group around servicing young mothers all year round. She encourages parents to bring in their children so they don’t have to arrange childcare by offering a range of facilities for babies and toddlers alongside mother-friendly services. While the salon won’t be promoting Mother’s Day as it’s something it does all year round, it offers a great deal of inspiration for other business owners wanted to tap into the market. “Our Mummy and Baby Spa concept has been extremely popular since launching,” she says. “I’d recommend offering mums quick treatments but as being a mum shouldn’t exclude clients from enjoying a facial or a massage, time lengths just need to be adjusted.” Time sensitive treatments are also
at the top of the list when servicing busy mums for Daphin’s education manager Emma Schulz. “Think about offering shorter treatments like a back massage or facial,” she says. “These are feel-good treatments that promote relaxation but in a short amount of time. Busy mums don’t have time for long services but still want to gain results.” But one of the best treatments experts are recommending for Mother’s Day 2012 is the gel-polish manicure or pedicure. However, giving your team a platform to showcase what they can do also works wonders for morale. “Parties are great for relations as they build new and deeper bonds between the team and clients, which has a huge impact on loyalty,” says Romano Zullo, owner of Nottingham’s Zullo and Holland. “You also have a captive audience where the atmosphere is more casual than in the traditional salon setting.” Barrie Stephen, owner of his eponymous salon group in the Midlands, Mondo

agrees that they make good business sense. “Events are great for gaining new customers,” he says. “Clients can invite their friends and if you put on an impressive event, they buy in to the salon ethos and want to be involved too.” There are of course many different event types to choose from. So before working out which one will work best for your business, deciding on your objective is often the best place to start. So why do you want to hold an event – is it to reward loyal clients or to tempt new ones? Are you promoting new products and services or introducing new team members? Or perhaps you want to show off your team’s skills? Whatever it is, the options are almost endless.
Tried and tested ideas
Barrie Stephen, owner of his eponymous salon group in the Midlands, says the most successful events combine shopping opportunities, expert advice and demonstrations – often with a charity angle. He says: “We focus our annual big event in early December as it’s the perfect time for retail opportunities and party
season advice.” The salon owner hires a venue for the evening and takes a large team to create a party atmosphere. Last year the event took place at the salon’s local David Lloyd gym and featured hair demonstrations from the art team, a blow-dry bar, stalls selling retail items, topless waiters and a pianist playing Christmas songs as well as free flowing drinks and mince pies. The evening attracted over 300 attendees who paid £5 a ticket in exchange for a bespoke Barrie Stephen shopping bag full of goodies and a January appointment promotion. “On the night we received some amazing retail figures, raised money for a local charity and filled the appointment book for January, so it was an all round success.” Meanwhile, Ronnie Marshall, owner of Byron Hairdressing in Scotland’s Kirkcaldy, recommends taking presentations to local businesses to raise awareness among new audiences. His team recently put on a fashion show at a local primary school where its stylists made-over house models as well as parents on stage while talking about current trends. The event proved

to be successful – leading to a full-page article in the local newspaper and “lots of bookings”. Marshall says: “Presentations where we’ve created something visual, exciting and informative are always hugely successful for us. We get to spread our message across a wider audience and potential clients love them.” But for Romano Zullo, owner of Nottingham’s Zullo and Holland, intimate evenings held in-salon are often the best way to project the right message. “With in-salon events clients get to see the salon in a different light and the relaxed atmosphere makes it easier for them to ask questions,” he says. “These events are about explaining the secrets of blowdrying, new products or even basic home care. If a client can care for her hair more successfully between appointments thanks to our advice, she’ll be a loyal client for life.” Alternatively, if you’d really like to raise your profile in the local community, Zullo recommends working with local charities. The salon owner has been planning a fundraiser ball with cancer support charity Maggie’s Nottingham for the past few months, which is set to go ahead in May. He says: “Part of it is our communication strategy to promote our charitable activity to clients and beyond. Maggie’s will promote it on its database and we’re confident the event will be supported by local press. There’s also the additional benefit that it’s exciting for the team.”
Top tips
So once you’ve decided on your event’s agenda and guest list, it’s essential to forward plan. Marshall advises salon owners to give themselves at least three months to organise every detail. “Identify who can help you and be prepared to delegate tasks,” he says. “Have regular meetings to prepare a schedule and ensure everyone is on-task and motivated.” Promoting the event is also vital to ensure high attendance. Stephen says: “Promote it long before the night – make
the most of everything in the salon to let people know: use show cards on each hair station and in treatment rooms as well as on reception. Promote it on your website and Facebook, ask your team to talk about it and record something on the telephone hold message.” Clients love freebies and promotions so consider a well stocked goodie bag and mini treatments to entice more people to come on the day. Zullo says: Get your product manufacturer to contribute. Goodie bags should be as generous as you can make them – fat with your literature and offers that you have running for the event as well as product. We found running a promotion where clients booking an appointment or service on the night get a discount or extra treat works well.” In the run up to the big day, make sure you’re prepared for everything. Stephen recommends printing off a schedule the week before and crossing off jobs each day: “Even the little things like finding a clothes rack for guests to hang their coats on, signs for the toilets and a bucket for the raffle tickets are important. It’s the little touches that show people you’ve really thought everything through – and it’ll be a great reflection on the business.” When it comes to the main event, make sure your team is well briefed on their individual role and create an agenda to keep everything flowing. “Have people on hand who can advise guests on which products and treatments will suit them,” says Stephen. “Clients love to receive targeted professional honest advice.” Lastly, don’t just think about the event but the future too. Zullo says: “Stopping short of barring the door, don’t let anyone leave before you can persuade them to willingly hand over their contact details. That way you can continue the conversation even after they all go home.” And lastly don’t forget to upload any photos to Twitter and your salon’s Facebook page. Attending guests will hopefully think fondly about the evening while those that couldn’t make it will want to be there next time.

A colourful journey As the nail industry bucks the recession trend with innovative products, Nail Harmony’s Danny Haile reflects on the success of his pioneering Gelish line
“T
he journey of Nail Harmony’s Gelish product began with a discussion in Japan. As a world leader, we were talking about the country’s nail industry and how it was changing: interest in acrylic enhancements had waned while the momentum for soakoff gels was rapidly increasing. “It was clear that the market was becoming a huge sector in the thriving Japanese industry and Nail Harmony wanted to produce something that would compete while remaining pioneering and completely different. “A few different people claim to have come up with the idea of a polish style gel. But that’s the direction we decided to go in: we wanted something that offered the benefits of gel combined with quick and easy salon application. “Once the concept was in place, the development stage of Gelish’s journey began; it was time to work on a formula and different types of pigment. At this point, all gels had to be mixed before use because of the separation and we didn’t want people having to shake bottles due to the risk of getting air bubbles in the gel. “After months of formulating the perfect product, we had to begin testing. But this was only the beginning – Gelish went through a vigorous process of trials of different formulas to get the product we

have today: a gel that doesn’t separate, is easy to apply and offers long lasting adhesion and high shine. “As with all new ideas and products, we embarked on a journey through the world of technology. We wanted to improve on what was already out there so part of this was making the application and service quicker. With this in mind, we began looking at new curing methods and lights that were just starting to emerge in the industry. LED gave us the speed we wanted so two or three-minute cure times were no longer needed – instead we could offer a full cure in 30 seconds or less. And even better still, LED gave the nails a fuller and more consistent cure. “After completing the formulation process, it was time to create the perfect packaging. Obviously it was going to be a bottle as it needed to have the appeal of a polish, but we had to decide on coating or labelling. Powder coating was one idea but it was hard to get an exact colour match – we didn’t want people having to second-guess the difference in colour. We also couldn’t use a regular polish bottle with a label because to make sure the new formula wouldn’t cure, it would have had to of been in brown bottle – so what to do? We eventually decided on a white powder coated bottle with a window in the centre – as pictured above – so clients can see the exact colour.
“Finally, we had to design the ideal brush. The wide variety was a popular choice but we had to design one that would work easily with Gelish. The bristles had to be soft enough not to mark the product but firm enough to allow a thin application without it all wiping off. We created the perfect solution. “All that was left after this process was deciding on our colours. And rather than following high fashion, we stayed true to the most popular colours as requested in the salon covering all bases between French finishes to blood reds. “So from concept to reality – the patent for Gelish was filed in 2009 with the strap line ‘performs like gel, applies like polish’. “But the journey doesn’t end there: we launched with 24 colours and now have close to 100 while we’ve also introduced hard gel formulas. Growing pains 1and1 Internet’s Richard Stevenson reveals the importance of a professional online presence
T
he majority of UK businesses now recognise that a web presence is essential for effective sales, marketing and customer communication. And while salon professionals will always be most concerned with the standard of their work, no firm can afford to neglect its business development. Thanks to the surge in popularity of smart phones, a growing number of Britons are now browsing the web on the move – making it easy for potential clients to research a business when passing it on the street. However, according to latest research, too many small business websites are falling behind the times. A study carried out by 1and1 Internet discovered that 46 per cent of consumers have cancelled their plans to spend with a small business after finding a poor website. Meanwhile, in the same study of nearly 2,000 adults, a further nine per cent opted to spend less as a direct result. The data shows low levels of consumer satisfaction. And the risk of offering a bad online experience is clear: 49 per cent of consumers believe that a poor website makes a worse impact than none at all. It’s clear that many small businesses’ websites have failed to evolve like they should have in recent years. One third of consumers surveyed (34 per cent) believe that, in general, the small business websites they use are “tired” and “unimpressive” while 41 per cent frequently find typos or broken URLs. Many consumers feel that many small business websites are unattractive and often do not perform well. So how well

It’s unsurprising that a further study of 480 small firms with a website revealed that 50 per cent have never asked their customers for feedback. However, many owners are aware that they have website problems. Sixty six per cent of firms surveyed admitted they struggle to maintain an attractive website, with the most common pain-point being the sourcing of fresh content (38 per cent). Meanwhile, 30 per cent have been “reluctant” or “embarrassed” to recommend their website to their customers. Significantly, many British consumers are keen to help businesses create a more satisfying online experience. Given the facility for providing feedback, 33 per cent said they’d provide a review – hence why all companies should add a form to their website or set up an email address for collecting user comments. Research shows that keeping a badly functioning website can comprise a risk to your revenue and development. Consumers today have higher expectations so it’s essential that your website inspires confidence. So make an investment to improve and see a positive impact on your bottom line.

The Beauty of apprenticeships With various accolades for his own salon’s acclaimed trainee scheme, Stuart Holmes reveals why he believes apprentices are the lifeblood of the hair and beauty industry
“L
ike many in this profession, I started my career as an apprentice. So when I set up my own salon I was keen to offer my staff the same support and development that I’d received when taking my first steps. “In this troubling economic time, apprenticeships make sound business sense as well as bringing youthful enthusiasm to the salon that can often be infectious and inspiring. Better still, according to the National Apprenticeship Scheme (NAS), apprentices incur lower training and recruitment costs and are more likely to stay longer. “I believe that apprenticeships are the lifeblood of this industry and without them we’d lose a vital commodity that’s essential for the growth, development and rejuvenation of our profession. “Our salon’s training programme philosophy is that one size doesn’t fit all. We aim to treat everyone as an individual by nurturing their strengths and helping them overcome their weaknesses. “It’s a fact that apprentices save on recruitment costs. As an employer, one of the biggest problems that we face is recruiting and retaining staff. Apprentices

are enthusiastic and willing to learn. They arrive with the right theoretical knowledge that is then paired with specific on-the-job training to create an employee that is quite literally tailor-made for your business. “Some would argue that investing in apprentices is a false economy as the trainees absorb the skills and can then simply transfer them elsewhere should they decide to leave. However, I’d argue that apprenticeships inspire loyalty and our 75 per cent trainee retention rate proves this. “Moreover, college training courses cover retail and marketing as part of the curriculum so I’ve received valuable input from my apprentices on things such as improving customer service or how to market a new product line. They also network with other students at college and so keep abreast of any innovations and trends within the industry. “Growing your salon’s own talent through an apprenticeship scheme means that you have total control of their skills from the very beginning. Trainees aren’t likely to bring any bad habits or practices from elsewhere and you can nurture and develop the areas you see need encouragement or guidance. So don’t
dismiss taking on your own apprentices – they could be just what your salon needs in this tough economic climate.” Stuart Holmes has over 23 years’ experience in hairdressing and runs the multi-award winning Stuart Holmes Hair and Beauty Spa in Cheltenham with his wife Sara.
STUART HOLMES’ APPRENTICESHIP BREAKDOWN Personal plan Each apprentice has a tailor-made training plan that I set up with their input when they join us. This plan takes into account their college syllabus and supports it with in-salon training. Communication I conduct regular one-to-one meetings with our apprentices where they’re encouraged to discuss all aspects of their training and development. Training Review Every six to eight weeks I hold a training review with each apprentice to make sure they’re progressing well and to see if they need any extra support. Team Every senior member of the salon is involved in the apprenticeship training programme so each trainee gets a broad knowledge base and a diverse skill set. Shows I take all of our apprentices to various top trade shows which they find both inspirational and aspirational. Shoots I also take them on fashion shoots so that they can get a different aspect on the world of hairdressing.
