hile autumn is traditionally the time when most salon owners gear up for a busy season ahead, January is the month to begin planning for a successful year. That’s why, as The Salon Magazine team begins 2013, we’ve been penning our features around this month’s theme: In with the new. It may be a cliché, but January presents the opportunity of a clean slate to everyone and the chance to start again. Even if you had a poor past 12 months (although we’re hoping you didn’t) the New Year brings fresh hope and motivation to succeed. Angelo Seminara triumphs as British Hairdresser of the Year for the third time in his career

A

ngelo Seminara was named British Hairdresser of the Year for the third time in his 30-year career last month at a glittering awards ceremony in Central London. Beating off stiff competition from last year’s champion Akin Konizi as well as Errol Douglas, Jamie Stevens, Mark Hayes, Tim Hartley and Mark Leeson, the Italian-born hairdresser’s awe-inspiring entry featured the unusual techniques, colours and textures his photographic collections have become renowned for. Having already won the industry’s most sought-after award in 2007 and 2010, Seminara became art director for Davines Spa in January 2011 while continuing his session and editorial work alongside

Eugene Soulieman. For the next year, the hairdresser plans to continue working on hair shows and exhibitions around the world while also developing an eco sustainable product line. Ever humble, he says: “I am so honoured to have won this award again. I was completely unprepared but also really excited to go up on stage and honour my work and team. I was pleased for all the people that have contributed to make the collection happen and for them to see the images on the big screen.” Compared by David Walliams with entertainment from British musician Labrinth, around 1,700 attendees flocked to the event to applaud the year’s biggest hair stars. This year saw the introduction of

three new members into the prestigious British Hairdressing Awards Hall of Fame as Terri Kay of Mark Leeson Hair Body and Mind, Hob Salons’ Christel Lunqvist and the group’s Creative Team received recognition for winning Eastern Hairdresser of the Year, British Colour Technician of the Year and Artistic Team of the Year three times respectively. Among the other winners were Tracey Devine from Angels in Aberdeen for Men’s Hairdresser of the Year; Toni and Guy’s Indira Schauwecker took home the award for Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year; Kieran Tudor of D&J Ambrose in Middlesex was named Newcomer of the Year; while Mark Leeson Hair Body and Mind scooped the title of Artistic Team of the Year.

A new not-for-profit trade body for eyelash technicians is set to launch at next month’s Professional Beauty London exhibition. Lashologist, which has been set up by Chrissy Henderson in response to the sector’s growth, will offer memberships to individuals and businesses providing eyelash services in the UK. For £59.99 a year, members will learn about the best practice, receive industry updates and help to ensure their standards meet the highest health and safety requirements. Its founder hopes the organisation will be recognised as the voice of the eyelash industry while raising its profile as a profession in its own right. She says: “My aim is that Lashologist UK will ensure that members are properly trained and maintain the highest possible standards. We will also give a whole range of benefits including insurance, education, networking and discounts for equipment.”

The International Institute for Anti-Ageing introduces Centre of Excellence recognition for colleges Chelmsford’s Lee Stafford Hair and Beauty Academy is one of the first training providers in the UK to be awarded with The International Institute for AntiAgeing’s (iiaa) Centre of Excellence status. The company has introduced the scheme to give special recognition to the colleges working with all three of its brands - the Advanced Nutrition Programme, Jane Iredale and Environ. In addition to product training, its courses include advanced skincare practical and theory to enable students to learn to treat the skin effectively from the inside out. The Lee Stafford Academy’s lead beauty tutor Theresa Maddison comments: “Our team of tutors are committed to providing the highest quality training programmes so we’re delighted to become an iiaa Centre of Excellence. We’ve taken on all the iiaa brands to give a well-rounded education in skincare, make-up and nutrition to our students.”

INDUSTRY UPDATE Chromogenex named on prestigious Sunday Times Fast Track 100 list Non-surgical laser machine manufacturer Chromogenex Technologies has been included in last month’s Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100, which ranks Britain’s fastest-growing private companies. The Wales-based company was the only medical equipment manufacturer listed with other firms including Jamie’s Italian restaurants and Lenstore.co.uk. It has reported overseas growth over the past 12 months and credits the spurt to high demand in the US, Brazil and Australia. CEO Peter McGuinness comments: “We have grown rapidly over the past three years as a result of innovative new products and expansion into new markets such as USA, South Africa, Brazil and Australia. Despite a difficult economic environment we continue to do well in the UK with an excellent marketing and customer service support for our customers.”

L’Oreal Colour Trophy wins Best Awards Scheme 2012 For 57 years the L’Oréal Colour Trophy has been awarding the nation’s best hairdressers. But last month, at the UK Event Awards, it picked up its very own gong for Best Awards Scheme 2012. Since its launch three years ago, the UK Event Awards recognise the UK’s best events, organisers and industry suppliers. L’Oréal had to submit a detailed entry breaking down its ‘hair inspired by fashion’ strategy along with results including press coverage on the BBC Breakfast News. The judging panel, which included LineUp MD Rob Leach, Logistik Group founder Dirk Mischendahl and Altitude 360 London’s marketing director Peter Kerwood, commended organisers for thinking creatively about developing the long established award scheme through modern channels such as social media.

Westrow offers support at Mannings for Macmillian charity fashion event The team at Westrow’s West Park branch in Leeds offered its styling services last month for a charity fashion show in aid of Macmillan cancer support. Held in association with Leeds estate agents Manning Stainton and Mercedes Benz, over 200 guests attended the fashion event – which featured clothes from local retailers – before taking part in a raffle to raise money for the cause. Manning Stainton promised to raise £50,000 in 2012 after MD Russell Manning lost his wife to the disease last year. The donations will be used to fund a Macmillan nurse. On the night the Westrow team was on hand to offer haircare advice as well as on-the-spot styling for guests who each received a goodie bag containing hair care products. Franchisee Laura Procter said: “Lending our services to this year’s Manning for Macmillan event was a wonderful opportunity for the Westrow West Park team. It’s great to give something back; Macmillan is an amazing charity and it was a pleasure to be involved.”

Salon social Wahl UK celebrated its 25-year business anniversary recently with a Twitter competition, which saw one winner receiving a customised leopard print scooter. Won by hairdressing apprentice Safia Djillali, the prize was presented to her last month by Wahl’s European artistic director Simon Shaw.

Aberdeenshire’s Elan Hair Design was named Sustainable Business of the Year at the 2012 Chamber Awards. The salon beat off stiff competition from all industry sectors across the UK thanks to owner Gordon and Lorna Milton’s commitment to instilling a culture of sustainability throughout the entire business. Salon consultant Daniel Rouah has been offering his grooming expertise to schoolchildren in a bid to help them get ready for the world of work. Kicking off a tour around the UK, the expert visited 85 sixth form pupils at Winchmore School in North London giving skin, hair care and shaving advice in preparation for interviews. Pembrokeshire College nail technology student Kirsty Bushen received a Samsung Galaxy tablet last month after winning a photographic competition at The Skills Show UK. Competitors across all sectors – including hairdressing, engineering and web design – were asked to submit an image of themselves for use in the opening ceremony that represented their skills to be in with a chance of winning the prize. Hair and beauty marketing expert Angela Kokshoorn was guest speaker at HABB’s latest women’s networking event at the Goldwell Academy in Mayfair. Speaking of her work with L’Oreal, Charles Worthington and Batiste, the now vice president commercial for Collection Cosmetics told attendees how turning dry shampoo into a festival must-have is her most exciting accomplishment to date.

Ensure your hair colour menu is up to scratch with the industry’s latest formulas

e’re currently in the midst of a very exciting period for professional hair colour. For the first time in 100 years, the industry has seen a real shift away from traditional ammonia-laden formulations towards gentler products that still yield great results. While many clients tried their hands at home dye jobs at the start of the recession, the industry fought back with improved hi-tech products and techniques that completely outshine the DIY market. And now as momentum spreads, salons are seeing a rise in demand for colour results that clients could never re-create at home. “Consumers are becoming increasingly conscious of the need to treat their hair with respect and are less inclined to take a risk with colour at home,” says Redken Platform Artist Kelly Scott. “They’re finally seeing that hair is the fabric that they wear everyday.” Indeed today’s most coveted colour looks consist of bold block hues, dipdying, highlighting and subtle slicing, which all have to be expertly applied by a professional. And that trend is set

to continue into this year and beyond. So as colourists become increasingly advanced in their craft, manufacturers are keeping up by launching highly effective formulations that achieve better results than ever before.

Winning formulas Of course the hair colour story of the century is the move away from ammonia towards oil delivery systems (something that Organic Colour Systems pioneered in 1990). Due to expensive ingredients, it took a long time to go mainstream. However, for 2013 and beyond, it’s clearly a route that many brands are going down. Since L’Oreal’s INOA hit the market in 2011 with a global advertising campaign, demand for this new wave of in-salon colour has skyrocketed. “I believe we’re about to see a wider acceptance of more natural alternatives,” says Raoul Perfitt, MD for Organic Colour Systems. “I believe the industry is facing challenging times however by offering clients something different and not available in the high street stores and that offers a huge business advantage.” David Larcombe, Spanish haircare

brand Montibel.lo’s technical manager, agrees, adding: “Current colour product trends are all focused on ammonia-free colour. Clients are phoning and knocking on the door of salons asking if they offer ammonia-free colour. They’ve seen it on the television, they’re interested and they’ve done their homework – so they want a colour that is more gentle and delicate but that still provides great coverage.” Oil delivery technology means that brands don’t need to use harsh chemicals like ammonia to force colour into the cuticle – which in turn causes swelling. “Because oil and water repel, the oil delivery system allows the colour to penetrate so it’s a much gentler way to colour the hair,” explains Scott. Major new launches include Redken’s Chromatics range – which made its debut last year – boasting no ammonia or odour, 100 per cent coverage, strengthening protein extracts and multi-dimensional results. The product is also available in a range of shades that can be customblended for each client (Tel: 0845 600 0815 Redken.co.uk). But it’s not just ammonia (or a lack

Today’s multi-tasking formulas are also being enriched with hair hydrating ingredients such as argan oil and shea butter to add protection, suppleness and shine. Spanish brand Montibel.lo’s Oalia Colour System is one such range (Tel: 01264 334 466 Montibello.com). Its luxurious formula gives full coverage while leaving the hair feeling silky soft and regenerated. “Being able to create 100 per cent coverage on grey hair while making the locks healthier and shinier really makes it a real two-in-one multitasking product,” says Larcombe. Another of the company’s recent innovations is its Platiblanc Control bleach that can lift colour by two tones in 20 minutes. This helps create a refreshed blonde or can help remove stubborn colour. “I’ve never come across anything quite like it,” the brand’s expert adds. “If a client has a build-up of colour, the fact that I can just take one layer away is a really great help.” Meanwhile, products like Joico’s K-Pak not only colour and condition, but helps to “reconstruct” the hair so clients are left with healthier looking locks than before (RRP £12.95; Tel: 0845 071 2326 Joicoeurope.com). International artistic director Sue Pemberton says: “It’s great to know that colourists can use a permanent, demi or semi-permanent product that is less damaging to the hair. Joico Vero K-Pak Color makes the hair feel better after colour or a colour correction service. This is because of

the technology in the K-Pak formula; it actually reconstructs as it colours. It’s one of my favourite benefits.” But one of the latest products on the market – set to launch at the beginning of this year – is Affinage’s Infiniti colour range (Tel: 01794 527 111 Affinage.com). Boasting Datem Plus Technology, the system is unique in its use of gentle heat, which accelerates the colouring process to just 25 minutes with no damage to the hair or scalp. As it does contain a very small amount of ammonia (0.2 per cent) the company says it “combines the higher performance and predictability of ammonia-based products with the improved condition provided by a low level.” According to Dr Nicola Summer, director of research and development at the Affinage laboratory in Italy, it is one of the most technologically advanced products on the market. “The Datem Plus Technology that makes it completely unique,” she explains. “Its formulations are more than 90 per cent naturally derived, it gives 100 per cent grey coverage and the hair is left in amazing condition thanks to its conditioning emulsion cream base with shea butter and argan oil.” With ever advancing technology, the hair colour sector is moving forward at rapid speed to meet the needs of today’s clients. So if you haven’t revised your menu to meet the growing demand for natural-based multi-tasking formulas, now is the time to discover a whole new world of colour.

Weekend colour Consider adding semi-permanent options for clients looking to experiment when they’re off-duty. Kelly Scott, Redken Platform Artist and artistic director at Strands Hairdressing, explains: “People are being a lot more experimental with colour at the moment and we’re seeing clients playing around with their shades. Temporary colours that wash in and wash out plus products like colour chalks that pick up on the huge pastel trend have been really flying off the shelves.”

Rapid results In today’s demanding world, many clients find taking three hours out of their busy schedule to visit the salon too much. With this in mind, the experts are predicting a move towards rapid colour services that will appeal to an even wider audience. Sue Pemberton, Joico’s international hair colour artistic director, says: “I feel that services need to be done quicker for the client that is on the go. The future will be about fast, quick and easy techniques for colour. I like to call it, “minimum amount of foils, to create maximum impact”!

Evolving style According to Hob Salons’ Christel Lundqvist, who is also global technical creative director for TIGI, bespoke colour services that evolve with the seasons and fashion trends will be the next stage of the personalised salon hair colour experience. “Clients like change and even if it’s subtle it makes them feel special,” she says. “They wear their hair every day but change their look over the year, so they need advice on evolving their colour. This month I’m launching an education programme and book called TIGI Creative Consultation – a unique system designed to guide stylists in the conversation with their clients using their personal fashion look (or ‘tribe’) as a reference along with skin tone, eye colour and complexion.”

aul Clayton, owner of Newcastle city centre’s Clayton and Company Hairdressing, says obtaining cash quickly from MCE has been fundamental to the success of his business. he revolution in marketing is over almost as soon as it began. In just a handful of years, online has won while traditional marketing has laid down its weapons and conceded defeat. Peace negotiations now centre on how direct mail and advertising fit with digital marketing, not the other way around. The skirmish began with websites before being whipped into a frenzy with email marketing and stoked further by online review sites. By the time social networking took over from speaking to one another in person or on the phone, online clearly had the upper hand. But as with any seismic change, trying to convince everyone to embrace the new is taking time. There are still people out there who haven’t signed up to Facebook and rarely check their emails, but their number is shrinking by millions every month – that’s right, every month! Meanwhile, salons that jumped on board early are benefiting from large numbers of followers on Twitter and Facebook, healthy databases of clients expecting their messages, high rankings on Google and rave reviews on Yelp. Their websites are smart phone ready and fast loading while their online bookings are growing dramatically. Sophisticated analytics are now available to measure and inform campaigns, via Facebook Insights or Google Analytics, allowing those salons to judge what works and what doesn’t as well as what to repeat and what to avoid – and all the while building a loyal and

engaged clientele. But the really successful salons have also realised that digital marketing is about more than just a different channel of communication: it is a whole new way of communicating. Traditional marketing was all about getting the salon’s name in front of clients (think of a billboard; a flyer; a radio ad; a TV spot; a print advertisement) and if you

do for them. To market effectively these days you have to ask questions, not make statements. And, more importantly, you have to listen to the answers. How well you listen will make or break your strategy. Of course, all of this is happening across a multitude of platforms, and to follow them all would mean an end to your life as you know it. Instead, it’s far best to target just a few and post frequent, consistent messages…

Keeping the conversation going Alongside your social networking efforts sits email marketing, the new direct mail. Cheap and easy, it is your new best friend when it comes to promoting your business. The huge design and printing costs and the worry about getting any brochure or leaflet into the hands of potential clients are gone. Instead, smart emails rich with links to your website will receive a warm reception from those who opted into your mailing list, boosting sales and online bookings. When we work with

In all, the campaign has become essential to keeping the conversation going between the salon and its client between visits. Of course, an email campaign’s success depends on the salon’s database. A recent survey by salon software giant Shortcuts found that the average salon holds email addresses for just 15 per cent of its clients. One of the biggest obstacles is reluctance by the team to take responsibility for gathering clients’ emails. But enshrine it in training and salon policy; enforce it by rewarding success and email lists will grow. And it’s worth the effort as email addresses are necessary for that other great boom in digital communications: the online survey. Some software providers offer survey templates or many free ones are available on the internet. These give a perfect platform to encourage feedback from clients, which can drive improvements in service and pollinate the two-way relationship. Stick with one offering analytics that flag up any issues and, over time, recognise trends. We recommend sending out surveys to new clients to show interest in them from day one, and a general survey to the whole database no more than once a year. Offering incentives encourages participation, and featuring the findings in newsletters will drive up interest. The post-revolutionary world of digital marketing is rich with opportunity and

This can have a disastrous effect in an industry where the majority of staff are client facing. “Some staff members produce very commercial styles while others opt to create more catwalk looks. We enlist the help of a judging panel made up of senior staff management plus representatives from L’Oreal, our PR team and the media. Models are paraded in front of the judges while the stylists talk through their look. Each is then professionally photographed so every participant can use the experience as part of their portfolio. “The judges usually choose two winners whose names are announced at a catwalk show that evening. This is always held at a trendy local hotel and all the stylists can invite up to four guests to attend. It really is a fantastic way for them to show off their professional skills to their friends and family. The winners in the past have won £150 cash each plus Matrix Training vouchers.
