And as increasing numbers of consumers recycle their waste and opt for organic produce, eco-friendly cars and Fair Trade alternatives, your salon must reflect today’s modern values. In the past many business owners were reluctant to turn over a new green leaf. But with huge firms such as McDonald’s and Apple leading by example with strong eco values, small businesses must keep up to remain attractive to potential customers. And while costs are often cited as the main obstacle preventing salon owners from running a more environmentally conscience enterprise, it seems that a little up front investment can actually save money in the long run. With this in mind, this month we’ve spoken to three UK salons that have put green values high on their business agenda. Partnering with brands and product houses that take their own responsibilities seriously is a great way to start. However, from installing low energy light bulbs to recycling wherever possible, small steps are the way to make a real difference to way you run your salon. Sunless tanning services, which are always highly sought after during the summer months, are one of the strongest sectors of

the beauty industry at the moment. If your salon has a beauty room and you aren’t offering such service, now might be a great time to consider the benefits. And this month, if your appointment book can take it, we’ve enlisted the experts to reveal some great ideas you can implement to get clients booking more spray tans. Because much like hair colour, if you can just get a client to try a professional tanning treatment, they’re often hooked on the results and will become a regular for life. Many salon owners are naturally media savvy and do a great job of running the PR and marketing side of their business on their own. Nail industry “recognised in its own right” at last month’s inaugural Scratch Star awards

T

he nail sector was one step closer to being recognised as an industry in its own right last month when the winners of the inaugural Scratch Star awards were announced in London. Created by leading UK nails magazine Scratch, the ceremony awarded 18 winners in naildedicated categories ranging from Nail Stylist of the Year to Industry Innovator. Compèred by Daybreak’s Dann Lobb, guests – which included salon owners, product house representatives, therapists and nail techs – were treated to a champagne-fuelled drinks reception and celebratory party in honour of the winners. Among those awared gongs was industry veteran Denise Wright for Nail Stylist of the Year; fashion frontrunner Jenny Longworth for Session Stylist of the Year; Chelsea’s Hand and Foot Spa

for Nail Salon of the Year; and multiple award winners Margarita Belska and Elise Scholes-Pilkington for Liquid and Powder Tech of the Year and Gel Polish Stylist of the Year respectively. Meanwhile, the industry’s suppliers were also recognised via several awards including Sweet Squared for Industry Innovator (pictured above), Palms Extra for Best Customer Care and Louella Belle for Best Marketing and Support. Scratch magazine’s editor Alex Fox says the idea for the awards has been in the pipeline for the past three years: “It was so important for me to see the nail industry stand alone and be recognised in its own right as a beauty sector full of amazing, skilled and creative talents,” she says. “The nail professional deserves credit for the amazing work that this produced. And so with the surge of popularity in nails

we’ve experienced in the last five years and the upward trend we’re seeing in nails – it was the right time to launch.” Entries for each individual award were put through a vigorous two-month judging process before a panel short-listed 50 finalists. Depending on the award, some were then invited to The London College of Beauty Therapy where they were interviewed and trade tested by a group of esteemed industry professionals while others submitted portfolios and were visited and phoned by mystery shoppers. “The top 50 finalists were all outstanding,” says Fox. “In some categories it was really close. We were delighted by the calibre of the entries – not surprised, but truly delighted.” Organisers are already planning Scratch Stars 2013 and promise earlier nominations and a bigger ceremony venue.

INDUSTRY UPDATE Habia CEO Alan Goldsbro to retire after 23 years of service Habia CEO Alan Goldsbro is to slowly relinquish his duties in time for retirement after more than 23 years at the helm, it has been announced. Appointed in 1989, Goldsbro became CEO in 1991 and has played a significant role in putting the industry on the agenda of the government departments of five prime ministers over the years – significantly raising the industry’s reputation. Habia’s senior management team will continue to head the company, with extra input from chairman Suki Kalirai and treasurer Bill Shaw, until a different leadership structure is put in place. Goldsbro comments: “I remember first starting at Habia when we had a small office in Doncaster and two staff - so to be where we are now is incredible. I have met and worked with some amazing and inspirational people and organisations over the last 23 years and I will miss them all. I feel incredibly lucky and grateful to have been a part of this wonderful industry and to have played my own small part in helping develop the training systems that have helped its success.”

SUNLESS TANNING PROMOTIONS CROSS PROMOTIONS If your salon has a nearby boutique offering swimwear or other holiday essentials, asking the owner if they’d like to join forces for a cross promotion could prove to be lucrative. It’s an idea that Daniela Chandler, director at Bury St Edmonds’ SK Clinic and Spa, believes can be very popular with clients. “Incentive cross-promotions with local retailers often prove to be highly successful,” she says. “For example, offering customers a discount on sunless tanning services when they spend over a certain amount on swimwear or summer collections can prove to be good news for both parties.”

MULTI BUY DEALS Offering clients a discount for buying your services in bulk can be a great way to boost figures during a quiet spell. And offering multi deals to regular clients can also help instil loyalty. “We have just sent out an emailer to our loyalty card database offering them three tans for £30, which is worth almost £80,” says Sara Holmes, manager for Stuart Holmes Hair and Beauty. “The offer only went to existing clients and it is our way of re-engaging them with the salon. The likelihood is that 30-50 per cent may not actually use all three tans. Also, we are providing an opportunity to get them in through the door on three separate occasions – meaning three separate opportunities for up-selling.”

REFERRAL SCHEMES Clients who visit the salon for a weekly manicure or blow-dry provide a captive audience for your sunless tanning services. Training your stylists, therapists and front of house staff to casually mention special offers to entice them to book add-on services is a great way to maximise spend. “In my experience, cross referral schemes always work the best when trying to promote a certain service,” says Britta Krueger, founder of beauty product and training supplier Beautytrix. “Try and encourage clients that usually book in for a different service to try tanning by offering them a discount with their next appointment.”

Hosting a celebratory event is a great way to interact with the local community while raising awareness and boosting bookings. Amy Armitage, marketing executive for Xen-Tan, suggests hosting a Bank Holiday extravaganza to gain more customers throughout the summer months. “Events are ideal promotional opportunities,” she says. “Always take public holidays into consideration so you can decide when people will have more time and disposable income. You could even join forces with local businesses that have a similar customer base but don’t offer competing services. August bank holiday is a great time as it can tie in nicely with customers’ holidays.”

GO MOBILE

Take your inspiration from the big brands such as St. Tropez and mastermind your own ‘spraycation’ mobile promotion. The brand will be touring all over the UK this summer with a luxury beach-themed pop-up stand bringing rays of faux sunshine to key cities including London, Birmingham and Manchester at venues such as shopping centres. Consumers will also receive free retail product samples. Re-create your own downscaled version by taking your services to local events, nightclubs, parties and festivals and give out discount vouchers for salon bookings.

Consider attending local wedding exhibitions and offering a special group price for wedding party tans including bridesmaids and mother-of-the-brides.”

UPSELL WITHOUT THE HARD SELL

Upselling is an integral part of raising your salon’s takings from an average week to a great week. But one of the biggest challenges salon owners face is changing their therapists’ thought processes from delivering a service to becoming a sales person. Clients visit your salon to receive expert advice and it’s your team’s job to offer the best course of treatment and aftercare. “Tell your therapists that they are selling the result not the product,” says Sunjunkie’s Marie Hills. “When a customer books in for a full body spray tan they are purchasing the result – a great looking tan. Don’t fall in to the trap of explaining in laborious detail the full ingredients list or technical specifications. Instead talk about the great result, how to maintain it and all the different options for their next visit: suggestion is much more powerful than the hard sell.”

A big part of its ongoing strategy is using green products that “don’t compromise on results” such as British brand Organic Colour Systems. “Because the products are made in the UK they have a low carbon footprint,” she says. “But they also aren’t tested on animals and use certified organic ingredients for their natural properties.” The salon also uses disposable towels, low water pressure at the backwash and halogen lightening to minimise water and electrical use. She also recycles as much as possible and turns off the salon lights when it is sunny. Jackson says that working with the council to recycle is the biggest issue affecting the salon’s green credentials but she hopes this will improve. Her advice to other salon owners is to hunt down the best green product lines: “There’s no point on taking on a range that doesn’t work as you will lose business,” she says. Moreover, that changing the way the entire team thinks and works isn’t always easy but is “a must.” She adds: “You need to take small steps and understand that you don’t have to change the world overnight. Make sure you understand what you are changing and why.”

DIY PR checklist Decide on your USP and why people should visit you or write about you. The devil is in the detail: if you are sending information about your business to journalists, ensure it’s factually correct and your copy is concise and word perfect. Never over promise and under deliver – journalists work to tight deadlines, and if you let them down, it’s unlikely they will feel they can rely on you in the future. Low-resolution imagery is the bugbear of every editor, so ensure you have professional, high-resolution images of your salon and staff on file. Submissions for editorial use must be 300dpi (dots per inch) at A4 size, in case it is used as a full page. Make sure your contact list is updated. Don’t send everything to the editor, instead find out who deals with the sections of the publication you want to target and work on building up a relationship. Find out how they like to receive their material and ensure images

are labelled and spelt correctly. Advertising campaigns should be targeted and meaningful. Come up with creative solutions that will add a point of difference to the titles you collaborate with, while delivering on your brand’s key messages and positioning you or your staff as experts in your field. Does your website portray the right message about your business? It’s the shop window into your salon world; if it’s cluttered and hard to navigate this reflects badly on your business. A large, robust and well-managed client database is a huge asset to any business and can be a valuable marketing tool to inform clients of offers or promotions. Consider linking in with local, premium brands for client evenings or charity events. This will help to establish mutually beneficial and long-lasting collaborations, while helping to gain coverage in the local press. uch has changed in the world of commercial websites in a very short time. Gone are the days when salon sites were purely a place clients could view as an online shop window before their visit. Today, websites that are built and maintained with care, are potentially the most cost effective marketing and sales tool a business owner can have. So how can you ensure you’re making the most of your website? I think it can be broken down into these five steps:

Step one: responsive design New technology responsive design

has done away with the need for two separate websites for computers and mobiles or tablets. With over 60 per cent of the population now choosing to reach websites using smart phones, responsive design moulds the website to suit the platform that’s accessing the site. Therefore key areas that were previously only readable on a desktop or laptop are now prioritised automatically – ensuring all key elements are easily read. This extends to all types of tablets as well. Responsive design is no flash in the pan fad. It’s here to stay and must be built into any website build protocol – if it’s not, then you’re losing customers and not working with up to speed web designers.

Step three: Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) In the previous two sections we’ve talked about SEO. So what is it? Quite simply, it’s the process your website can be naturally boosted by in the search rankings. Having the relevant key content in place on your website coinciding with the end user’s needs means that your sight will be at the forefront of their searches, increasing the efficiency of your site and dramatically improving your market penetration. Last year, correct use of SEO generated £72,000 of extra business for Catalyst – a not uncommon result. To work SEO you must do a number of simple things with your designer, including adapting your H1 and H2 titles, meta tags and page titles. For further advice, seek an SEO expert.

Step four: Google Pay Per Click This route is the internet’s version of paid for advertising. You can control it by putting a limit on the number of clicks

allowed per day onto your site. If you have a great product, service or piece of news that you need to promote, then Pay Per Click will generate extra interest in your site. Then it’s up to you, your website and the offer to convert this interest into sales. For me, however, I tend to use Pay Per Click on searches where I believe that the offer is not getting the prominence it deserves. So if you have achieved a naturally high ranking organically through SEO, there’s really no need to invest in Pay Per Click. Before considering it as an option, ensure you fully understand the costings and build them into the price of a service. To make really sure, talk to a specialist agency, as it’s very easy to make a costly mistake here.

Step five: social media integration In the past 12 months, Twitter and Facebook have evolved into important, commercial tools that businesses can use to generate turnover, clients and awareness. More and more instantaneous

communications are being accepted and demanded by clients who also are very open to creating electronic relationships with a limited number of trusted sources. And that means potentially, you! So be social media savvy and reap the benefits of this free marketing tool. But recent research shows that a high number of UK firms – including hair and beauty salons – may be at risk of losing the audience they worked hard to acquire as consumers now switch to browsing the internet from a mobile device instead of an ordinary computer. Despite 64 per cent of small business owners having used

The smaller screen and touch functionality of mobile devices can often make it necessary to adapt the design of a website. Furthermore, a significantly higher number of operating systems and browsers have to be supported as compared to local hardware like PCs. From businesses surveyed that had examined their web presence from a mobile, 41 per cent admitted their website had a reduced appearance from a mobile device, and 36 per cent knew of reduced functionality. Meanwhile, only seven per cent of firms were confident they had optimised their websites for mobile usage, while 65 per cent have no plans to do so. It appears that many UK business owners today place a low importance on whether their website can be used comfortably from a mobile device. Only the minority of owners (18 per cent) believe that a mobile-friendly website would positively impact sales revenue, 23 per cent recognise a link to brand enhancement, and 31 per cent feel it could provide access to a broader range

of customers. Some 43 per cent of owners agree that an optimised website could make a difference to the overall visibility of a business. The figures suggest that complacency on the issue has the potential to place firms at risk of losing website visitors and failing to engage with consumers. Thus, it is perhaps unsurprising that mobile-friendly website features are still not commonplace. Only one in four firms have a location map on their website or have location listings on popular search engines such as Google. Interestingly, the level of optimisation for mobile devices varies on an international scale. Spanish business owners are most likely to have checked their website for mobile usage (58 per cent), while German firms are the least likely (31 per cent). Meanwhile French companies have made the most efforts to optimise the design of their websites (13 per cent). The data shows that many UK websites have not yet reached the smart phone age. Hair and beauty professionals must ensure that when their site is viewed on a mobile it loads promptly, functions correctly and comprises an attractive and fitting representation of their business.

What’s your Virality? In the final instalment of her Facebook Masterclass series, Valorie Reavis reveals how to maximise the posts that get your fans talking

S

ometimes it seems like the people at Facebook simply make words up, especially in the case of one of their latest (and most important) statistics – ‘virality’. Seriously? Is that even a word? But before we write a letter to Webster’s Dictionary, let’s refocus on what it means instead because, whatever they call it, it still has a serious impact on your Facebook page performance. Engagement used to be the key performance indicator for most campaigns and while it remains an important factor for both growing your fan base as well as maintaining relevance with your existing fans, it’s only the beginning in the eyes of the virality guru. Virality essentially is defined as the number of people that have ‘created’ a story about your post out of the total number of individuals that have seen it. Typically represented as a percentage, this little nugget of information tells you how many people find your post so interesting that they have engaged to a point that it has been shared with their fans. This doesn’t mean that they have just clicked ‘Share’ and posted it with comments, although that action is included. It just means that they have engaged with the post in a way that has created a story that has shown up on their wall. For example, when someone

‘likes’ a post, it shows up in their recent activity, in the ticker and in the newsfeed, sharing your post with their friends. This sort of engagement is much more useful than viewing your photo, wouldn’t you agree? After all, if they just looked at the photo no one else knows about it besides you, Facebook and that fan. It’s much better if they ‘like’ the photo so all of their friends know they’ve been looking at it, too. Below is a list of engagement actions that your fans can do when they see a post, which we’ve listed in order of impact from a simple view to an RSVP to a Facebook event. In the latter half of this list are all of the actions that make up this new virality category of stats for Facebook and can be seen in Insights under ‘Talking about this’ as an aggregate total. This area has confused many people since the shift

in Insights, but it basically identifies the number of people ‘talking’ about your post on their own Facebook profiles. Think of it as super-charged engagement. Too easy, huh? You can also see the virality of each post on the ‘Overview’, which is helpful when it comes to planning what you post ongoing. The posts that have the highest virality are those that you want to keep posting because it is an essential part of any campaign; it’s the Facebook equivalent of word of mouth, and every salon and spa knows the power that word of mouth has on the bottom line. love getting a letter in the post - something that is addressed to me rather than ‘The Occupier.’ A letter that’s interesting and not asking for money is always a joy to open. “However, I am realistic. Today ‘snail mail’ is not as cost effective or timely as the other alternatives, so at Stuart Holmes Hair and Beauty, we predominately use e-marketing as a way of keeping our clients informed. “The ease of sending and responding to an email has made all of our lives a lot simpler. There are no handling or postage costs. It is delivered within seconds and the response can be just as quick. All you need is an internet connection. We have found that a well-planned e-marketing strategy is an effective and efficient way of engaging with our clients. We can plan our correspondence so that we reach the right person with the right campaign and avoid the ‘pester factor’ that regular e-correspondence can elicit. “We’ve also found that linking the website to the database can also provide useful information about the user and therefore refine the customer profile. E-marketing campaigns are easily traceable with the web analytics that are available. And we’ve used these to track various campaigns with sometimes surprising results. “Campaigns that we thought wouldn’t be too successful have proved exactly the opposite; but without the traceability, we’d never have known. Through digital correspondence, you can see exactly how many people opened the email and clicked through onto your website. You can also see how many people deleted the email without even opening it. “Our Secret Sale is a perfect example of an engaging email campaign creating what the jargon lovers would call ‘good social currency’. The email is sent out to the entire database and we actively encourage our clients to forward it on to their friends. “Email marketing is incredibly costeffective and requires less manpower to implement when compared with a traditional snail mail campaign. So long as it’s properly planned and effectively targeted, you can reach the right customers at a much lower cost than traditional marketing methods. “Using email as a communication method also means you can respond quickly to current affairs and get a relevant message out to your database. We’ve done this extensively in the past to communicate with our database in times of extreme weather. For example, during a heat wave, we may write to our database to let them know that they’ll receive a complimentary ice cream. At the other extreme, when snow was on the ground last winter, we were able to email our database and say we were still open for business. We used this to our benefit to promote cancellations and encouraged customers who could walk to the salon to take advantage of these. “Good email marketing, however, must be kept simple. It needs clear calls to action and must be visually attractive. The simpler and the better it looks, the more click-throughs and opens it’ll achieve.”

The pros and cons of email marketing PROS • Ease and speed of delivery – emails aren’t difficult to produce and can be delivered in seconds. The response time is equally swift and painless. • Affordability – the costs are typically restricted to simply having an internet connection and the time it takes to compose and send the message. Additional costs may be incurred if the emailer is designed professionally and sent through an automated service. • Highly targeted – your message can communicate with a specific audience by utilising previous sales behaviour or location. • Monitoring – you can see exactly how many people read the email and clicked through. This is valuable when trying to understand customer behaviour.

CONS • Over-contacting causes people to unsubscribe. • Poor looking emailers can seem cheap and tacky, which may not fit in with your brand image. • Doing it yourself can look unprofessional so you may need to recruit a designer to help produce the email template.
