T
here’s been much written about Vidal Sassoon since the sad news of his death broke last month. I was never lucky enough to meet the man himself, however his name has been synonymous with the world of hairdressing in my mind for as long as I can remember. Journalists from both sides of the Atlantic have looked back on the London-born hairdresser’s legacy of life-changing geometric haircuts, his liberation of women in the ‘60s and the Sassoon Bond Street super salon as well as his work with charities and battle against anti-Semitism. The list goes on. But I’ve found nothing more poignant than the admiration and appreciation that has come from hairdressers themselves. Facebook and Twitter were inundated with messages of both sorrow and joyful memories as hairdressers touched by Sassoon’s work posted their own personal thoughts from around the globe. The general consensus was that he did indeed – echoing the strap line of last year’s documentary Vidal Sassoon: The Movie – change the world with a pair of scissors. But even more than that, he inspired generation after generation of young talent to push the boundaries and dare to be different. And his new philosophy, which put precision cutting at the forefront of each style, has remained the
cornerstone of modern hairdressing for the past 50 years. It’s widely documented that hairdressing is what it is today because of Vidal Sassoon. For those of who weren’t around in the ‘50s and ‘60s, it seems extraordinary that there was once a time when the ‘wash and go’ haircut was unheard of. And that women, from all walks of life, visited the salon every week to have their hair set in rollers and lacquered until it could barely move. But Sassoon’s much-welcomed switch from overly-styled manes towards short edgy cuts and crops that were easy to maintain went hand-in-hand with female liberation in London’s swinging ‘60s. And better yet, his styles have become timeless in today’s portfolio of haircuts. So while the world pores over the legacy left by Vidal Sassoon, hairdressers everywhere are remembering his influence every time they pick up their scissors. GEMMA WARD, EDITOR

Vidal Sassoon: the salon industry says goodbye to hairdressing’s original super-stylist
T
ributes have been pouring in for Vidal Sassoon CBE who lost his battle with leukaemia last month. The 84-year-old died of natural causes in Los Angeles on 9 May with his wife and family by his side. Sassoon was the pioneer of hairdressing as we know it today: he revolutionised the trade by steering women away from heavily styled beehives and bouffants towards ‘wash and wear’ looks. Influenced by architecture and geometric shapes, in the ‘60s he reworked the classic bob with angular cuts on a horizontal plane and created the revolutionary five-point cut. After building a global enterprise of salons, academies and styling products for more than two decades, Sassoon sold the rights to his name in 1983, which was acquired by Proctor and Gamble in 1985. In 2009 the hairdresser was honoured by the Queen and named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Last year he worked with Bumble and Bumble
founder Michael Gordon to launch a documentary on his life, Vidal Sassoon: The Movie, as well as an autobiography – bringing his story to a new audience. Richard and Hellen Ward, owners of the Richard Ward Hair and Metrospa in Chelsea, said: “There aren’t many hairdressers whose death would make headline news on both sides of the Atlantic; the fact that Vidal’s passing does just demonstrates his cultural influence on the whole world. Sassoon was the first great ‘brander’ and regardless of his amazing technical and creative output, we shouldn’t forget his business brain and ‘never say never’ attitude. He believed anything was possible in hairdressing and he was right” John Vial, creative director of Fudge, who worked with Sassoon for 12 years and headed up the Asian division of Vidal Sassoon Training, added: “What can I say that hasn’t already been said? Twenty years of inspiration – not only professionally but personally. I will miss the
laughter the most and the bad jokes.” Tony Rizzo, founder of Sanrizz salon and Alternative Hair, announced that there will be a special tribute to Sassoon at this year’s charity show. He said: “I had known Vidal Sassoon for many years and he has been a life-long inspiration on my work. With his vision and energy, he is the man who changed the face of hairdressing forever. As a person he had an incredible gentleness and a generosity of spirit that was very special. “We were very honoured when Vidal agreed to become Worldwide Patron of Alternative Hair. He was an incredible support and his influence and inspiration will continue. It is very poignant that Vidal passed away on the same day as my son Valentino, having both suffered from leukaemia. And, it is perhaps both special and ironic that we have named our thirtieth anniversary show, ‘Legends’. Vidal’s influence and presence will remain with us forever, and we will honour him as a friend and a hairdresser.”

The ultimate blow-dry As ghd launches its masterclass series in conjunction with Zoe Irwin, we reveal the step-by-step process behind the super stylist’s ultimate blow-dry • To begin the ultimate blow-dry, toweldry the hair leaving as much moisture in as possible. • Apply ghd Style Root Lift Spray from the roots down to add texture and ghd Style Total Volume Foam through the mid-lengths and ends for a big bouncy blow-dry. Start by drying the roots first using ghd air. • Let gravity help you build volume and ask your client to turn their head upside down. Apart from the obvious chance to gain extra revenue, attracting a male clientele can offer a multitude of benefits. For Lorena Oberg, founder of Derma Eraze and her own London salon, men often become staunch “brand fans” and help businesses through the tough times. “Men are incredibly loyal,” she says. “We have male clients that have been regulars at our salon for over 40 years.” With men making up almost half of her client base, the business owner offers haircuts, shaving and various hair and

arked by industry analysts as the ‘one to watch’, the professional male grooming sector has been a slow burner for most UK salons. But now, according to recent research carried out by industry supplier Salon Services, the market is really beginning to blossom. In the company’s recent Beautiful Britain report – which polled around 1,500 salons – 66 per cent of UK hairdressers and therapists said they’ve seen an increase in male footfall over the past year. And it’s not just traditional haircuts that are driving the surge in clients – beauty treatments, such as massages, hair removal, nail services and tanning, are proving to be highly popular choices on the once female-dominated salon menu. “Our customers are telling us that they’re seeing a huge and increasing demand from men asking for beauty treatments,” says Salon Services MD Richard Hill. “With the male hairdressing market estimated to be worth £1.2 billion alone, this market now represents a significant opportunity for hairdressers and salons across the UK.”

However, she says that tattoo removal, stretch marks and skin rejuvenation treatments are also extremely popular. “Young males are often very self conscious about facial scars,” she says. “Other than the traditional haircuts, tattoo and scar removal are by far the most popular treatments for men.” Meanwhile, at Yorkshire salon group Westrow, where tailored haircutting and colouring services for men make up 35 per cent of its overall business, attracting male clients is an essential part of its strategy. “The benefits of embracing a male clientele can be vast,” says co-owner Steve Rowbottom. “Men tend to be very loyal clients, as well as creatures of habit, often visiting the salon on the same day and time each month with the same stylist.” The salon group offers every male client a complementary 15-minute hairline clean up in-between salon visits as well as a relaxing head and shoulder massage at the backwash. Meanwhile its most
But if you want to drive more men through your own salon doors, ensuring you’re offering a welcoming space is imperative. And even if your salon is unisex with a high ratio of female clients, this feat is still possible. At Chelsea’s Richard Ward Hair and Metrospa, which treats up to 100 men alongside streams of women each week, there are plasma televisions showing sporting events, a full licensed bar and plenty of male stylists, which help promote a man-friendly environment. “Our salon is very metro sexual,” explains manager Gavin Hoare, who says that its most popular treatments among men are eyebrow shaping and waxing. “Men can enjoy pampering and grooming without feeling embarrassed.” Moreover, Russell McGrath, operations director at Clipso Salons, actively uses its female client base to spread word-ofmouth to more men. “We attract male clients by impressing our female clientele who’ll then tell their partners to come in for a great service,” he says. For the expert, the number one point to consider when aiming to appeal to more men is to offer an experience that’s specifically tailored to their needs: “Men want an attractive, friendly team coupled with a fantastic and discreet service rather than being on view to a mainly female clientele,” he says. While many salons manage to appeal to both men and women equally, it’s
MEN’S SERVICES important to maintain a unisex strategy throughout the business, rather than trying to tag men’s services onto a femaleorientated business. Fiona Fowley, director of Edinburgh’s Zen Lifestyle, explains: “The target market should be reflected in the design, décor, marketing and communications style. Trying to bolt on men’s services to a predominantly female salon will create only a marginal male clientele.” This sentiment rings true at Cambridge’s Elajé Hair and Beauty, which has just opened a new sectioned off men’s zone within the salon. With masculine décor and separate identity from the rest of the salon, it offers haircuts, scalp and shoulder massages, manicures and brow shaping so men can feel comfortable about grooming in a friendly environment. “It’s important to make men feel welcome in a space that is for them, rather than an all-female environment,” says owner Julia Gaudio. “If you don’t have a separate area, it can be small things like men’s lifestyle magazines or offering them a cold beer on a hot day.” She adds: “The environment has to say to your male clients ‘this is your space too’. If it is too feminine, a male client may not feel so comfortable to come back on a regular basis.”
Man-friendly menus
When it comes to masterminding a treatment list for male clients, it’s important to cater for a wide cross section of clients. “You need to cater for all types,”
explains Gaudio. “There are men that are comfortable and used to having treatments such as intimate waxing, while all others want is a quick, no-fuss hair cut in their lunch hour. It’s about being sensitive to individual needs but also being alert to the fact that men coming in for a haircut may be considering other treatments.” If you’re looking for something different to add to your menu, hair loss services are becoming big business for some salons. Alexander Turnbull, owner of hull’s Alexander Hair and Beauty, has just set up a dedicated hair loss clinic. Catering for men suffering with hair loss or thinning, it offers advice, wig customisation and a full range of hair loss treatments. If there’s a demand in your area for hair replacement systems, offering the highly specialist service for male clients would give your salon a unique point of difference. Spray tans, for example, that have been revised for the male market can be a winner for a man-friendly menu. XenTan’s Natalie Roche explains: “Men find that a bit of fake tan can give them more confidence, which is why spray tanning for men is definitely on the rise; especially as the greatest effect you can achieve is the way you can contour with colour to accentuate the muscles. With summer fast approaching there are profits to be made with male customers.” And if you’re looking for something truly cutting edge, practitioner Belinda Hayle is touting advanced permanent cosmetics as the next big thing. She’s seen a surge in men booking in for permanent ‘guy liner’, she says is being fuelled by the extreme looks of Hollywood actors and rock stars. “Men are having it done as their little secret, after dabbing with pens and pencils themselves and achieving poor results,” she says. But whatever you decide to add to your menu, it’s clear that today’s male clients are becoming savvier about what they want from a salon. “Male grooming is a huge growth area and it is far more accepted these days,” says Gaudio. “The next step for men is to give them salons that are tuned into their specific needs, particularly with things such as intimate waxing. It’s not just about increasing your client base – salons offering specialised men’s treatments are still in the minority and there are huge opportunities to be had.”

Communicating with today’s tech-savvy and grooming literate men • “Men don’t respond well to the hard sell. They want factual information and products presented to them without fuss or ceremony. Men also like to feel relaxed so stylists who can put them at ease, while offering them prescriptive consultation based on their haircare needs are going to have a very loyal client – potentially for life,” says Steve Rowbottom, co-owner of Westrow. • “Our stylists are a good source of direct marketing to men – if they are cutting their hair then the conversation of a grooming treatment can easily be discussed,” says Gavin Hoare at the Richard Ward Hair and Metrospa. • “Men are often more data rational

than women in terms of what sort of information they need before making a buying decision. It’s important to respect their scepticism and make sure that you’re offering services that will work, can be easily explained and have understandable value in their pricing,” says Fiona Fowley of Zen Lifestyle. • “Men like to be able to book online and they like to be shown before and after pictures in a medium that they can relate to,” says Lorena Oberg of Derma Eraze • “Facebook and Twitter are great way to attract a larger male clientele. Any way you can create a buzz, show off new images and tell men what you’re up to is key,” says Russell McGrath at Clipso.

barrier against the skin, which helps to minimise razor burn. “The consistency still allows us to get really close with a straight cut throat razor, so the client gets a really close shave with no or little irritation.” When it comes to recommending the line to other salon owners, Parmer is unhesitating: “It performs well and retails well,” he says. “Most clients are surprised by how reasonably priced it is and it is easy to sell. Most clients who then start to use it become regular users. Summer comes around the same time each year, so be prepared. It’s really important to plan ahead and by analysing customers’ buying patterns you can predict what changes need to be made when and the best time to launch promotions for the greatest uptake. It’s all about knowing your clientele inside out and offering them what you know they’ll want.
Offer summer retail
Being a Matrix salon, we know that every year the brand will be running a summer promotion, so we tie this into our salon plan. It’s a great way to boost retail sales as clients are often looking for products to combat the effects of the sun, sea and swimming pools. The new lines we get in then also dictate which in-salon services we promote as they can often be linked to complement each other.
Identify your salon hotspots
There’s no point stocking incredible summer retail products and running tempting incentives if your clients don’t see them, so look at your salon floor and
identify the areas your clients use most. As our salon is quite large, we work in retail hotspots concentrating product displays in areas that clients are in or see most often and ensure they are rotated.
Don’t be afraid to launch promotions in your quietest month
In our salon May is the quietest month, which is obviously when people start to get ready for summer. So being aware of this, we can work to encourage people in. Launching promotions at the salon’s quietest time may hit the profit line initially but it can work to get clients rebooking appointments. There are always times in the year, for example after celebratory dates like Christmas, that are going to be quieter than others. Your job is to be prepared for the change and encourage existing clients to spend a little more than they would ordinarily, ensuring your average ticket price goes up. The key thing for success is to know your clients shopping habits – look at past data and distinguish a pattern, then forward plan so that you can utilise the information to boost bookings.
Create a summer atmosphere
Subtly changing the atmosphere of the salon is a great way to get clients ready for summer. As well as updating our product hotspots on the salon floor with the latest Matrix promotions, we also bring in seasonal flowers and put together a play list with a summer vibe. It’s just small differences to enhance the client experience as the seasons change.
Make the most out of quieter days
If you do find you have a quieter day in the week, don’t leave your salon team idly twiddling their thumbs. Use the time positively and get training. Not only will this motivate the team, but it will have a positive impact on the salon long-term too. Alongside internal training, I book my team on the Matrix Happy Hour sessions. I can’t speak highly enough about them – they are the best idea for re-education as they give staff a chance to top-up on new product training either at the salon or in the local area, making them a great option to take up in the summer months as well as throughout the year.

ord of mouth has always been one of the most powerful marketing tools available to salons. And the advent of Facebook and other social media hasn’t changed that. Working your Facebook page and gaining engagement with customers will spread the word about your business even more and help to build a strong, dynamic community. But a strong community doesn’t mean it is far-reaching. A vital part of any healthy Facebook page is growing the number of connections – because what’s the point of talking to an empty page? This is where Insights, the analytical section of your Facebook business page, can help you build a strategy to conquer the site one fan at a time. If you know what interests your fans, you’ve got the key to getting and keeping them onboard. Previously, we’ve looked at drilling down into the demographics to reveal where fans are located and what they like so you can target posts. This time we are looking at the same section (‘Likes’) to find out where these ‘likes’ are coming from. Below the demographics area we covered previously, you’ll find a simple graph detailing your ‘likes’ and ‘unlikes’ over time as well as where your likes are coming from.

The first section to consider is the graph ‘Where Your Likes Came From’. It features two simple lines, ‘new likes’ and ‘unlikes’. Hopefully ‘likes’ are much higher than ‘unlikes’. If not, you need to give linkup a call. Both are useful because it shows at a glance where the ‘likes’ and ‘unlikes’ happen, enabling you to drill in and link this to your activity. Just like in your business, people will leave your page as a natural course of relationships, but you want to keep these as minimal as possible. Check out any spikes in the graph. Is there is a particular date where there were more ‘unlikes’ than average? Have a look at the activity that happened on your page that day and draw some conclusions about the cause of the exodus. Was it at the tail end of a flurry of activity that may have irritated some so much that they decided to take a break? Or could it be a particular post, did you touch on something contentious? Sometimes it’s difficult not to stray into the personal, but it is important to remember at all times that your business persona is separate from your personal page and you must only post comments that you would say in the salon. Same thing with your ‘New Likes’ – have a look at any upswings and downturns to identify activities that resulted in an increase in likes. You
know you are on the right track if there is a spike in ‘likes’. Posts possibly went viral, appearing on your fans’ friends’ newsfeeds and they clearly liked the activity enough to want to be part of it. Check out what was said and who responded and try and think up similar, but not identical, potential posts and slip them in every now and again. The second aspect to consider is what channel the likes came through, shown in the list to the right of the ‘likes/ unlike’ graph. The most common source of ‘likes’ is ‘On Page’ meaning the user visited your page and decided to like you. The other most common route will be mobile, your increasingly ubiquitous smart phone. Evaluating this list is less about fitting standards and more about finding opportunities to increase your likeability in all categories. Most of this will boil down to activity and engagement. The more active you are and the more you are producing engaging content, the more exposure you get across all of these areas. Of course, advertising with Facebook helps too! Stuart Holmes reveals the importance of developing a consistent brand message
“A
s salon owners, we’re working in a creative industry. And so, on the whole, we’re generally concerned with how things look and the message they convey. A brand and profile is the outward expression of a business’s identity. As the company changes, the profile needs to evolve as well. And at Stuart Holmes Hair and Beauty, we have had to build and adapt our profile to reflect our positioning and message. “One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever been given was to take a look at my business from the outside in. This is not easy when you live and breathe it - so If you’re unable to gain perspective, ask someone whose opinion you trust to do it for you. It is invaluable. Doing so allowed me to see things differently and it threw up all sorts of interesting aspects that I was then able to address. “Another tool that we use to great effect is market and competitor research. It helps us to confirm our target audience and develop our USP. We use the information to help us identify what makes us different and unique and then we build on that. One thing that came out of this practice was our similarity to boutique hotels. We took that idea and ran with it. We adopted various practices common to hotel customer services and utilised them in the salon. It has improved the client experience and from the feedback, it has proved it to be a success. This demonstrates that any research should not be limited to your particular industry. “When building a profile consistency is absolutely key. Ensuring that everything

from the aesthetics such as logos, colours and imagery is the same is paramount as well as consistency in the tone and language that is used in any communication. As we developed our brand over the years we also developed a document that contains the brand guidelines that we stick to no matter what. This helps us maintain our profile and demonstrates to any new team member
what we are trying to achieve. It concerns everything from the font we use to how we address clients and the background colour of an email newsletter. “To ensure consistency, the business profile should be something that is reflected in all communication and that includes staff. Bringing them on board and discussing openly what you are
trying to achieve is essential. We make sure that the team is involved in brand direction and goals. An engaged member of staff engages clients. If they become ambassadors the message is accurately conveyed to the customers, therefore strengthening your brand. “The Internet is a cost effective way of reaching a large number of potential clients quickly and easily. A website is essential; in this technological age it is on the frontline and often the first introduction of your brand to a potential new client. And we all know that first impressions count. We spent a great deal of time researching and developing our site and it is constantly evolving. Keeping your website current is essential, there’s nothing worse than expired offers or out of date news. “We also decided to invest in search engine optimisation and we use social networking sites to communicate with our clients in a more informal way. Staying within our profile guidelines we’ve found that it can be a tremendous tool for gauging opinion and engaging with clients. It can also only cost you your time if you are able to manage it yourself. “Establishing your profile can take time and it doesn’t happen overnight. It needs nurturing and it needs to keep up with the natural evolution of the business.
