hile it used to be the place for youngsters to hook up with friends and virtually poke their acquaintances, Facebook is coming into its own as a onesite global marketing phenomenon. With over 845 million active users and counting, it’s now become an essential modern day communication tool used for a variety of tasks from keeping tabs on birthdays to organising events. But its ambitious makers have their sights firmly set on even bigger plans. From technophile grandmothers to preteen children, the site offers businesses a ready-made captive audience. While it’s early days, plans have already been unveiled to help firms capitalise on its success. Indeed social marketing has become one of the most important trends we’ve seen for decades – and it’s only going to get bigger. With this in mind, this month we’ve enlisted the knowledge of expert Valorie Reavis for a special Facebook masterclass (page 56). The first of a series, she delves into the site’s powers and reveals how to make the most of them. Because no matter how much money you turn over, thanks to its free price tag, taking advantage of this new strategy is open to all. Speaking of making the most of opportunities, James Davis, owner of the Clay Salon and Spa in Oxshott, has also written a piece this month on his battle through the

recession. Despite opening in a dire economic climate and facing a number of challenges, the young entrepreneur has overcome every obstacle – growing his business last year by 100 per cent month on month - to achieve huge success. He reveals his top tips for growth in his piece starting on page 54. One of the best ways to grow your own salon is to expand your client base and we can’t think of a better way than catering for the bridal market. According to many industry experts, every salon owner should be promoting hair and beauty services for wedding parties because it’s such a lucrative market to tap in to. If you’ve often considered this sector but haven’t known where to start (or already have a division but want some fresh ideas), we’ve spoken to some bridal frontrunners in our feature, The wedding planner, starting on page 44. Lastly, we all know that what your team wears in the salon can speak volumes about your brand and business. And this season, particularly in the beauty sector, we’re seeing a real shift towards in-salon glamour. Personally, we think the ‘Essex effect’ has an awful lot to do with it. Saks Kings Hill

Saks recognises its best salons at national awards ceremony

T

he crème de la crème of the Saks Hair and Beauty salon group were celebrated last month at a glittering national awards ceremony in London. Held at the Hilton Metropole, over 700 attendees from salons all across the UK made their way to the event to recognise the success of their peers. And with only 20 awards up for grabs spanning over eight categories – including individual and salon awards as well as photographic – the competition was fierce. Among the biggest winners of the evening was the team from the Kings Hill franchise in West Malling, Kent, which took home four prizes for Stylist Image, Marketing, Customer Care and Salon of the Year. Owner Claire Denyer opened the franchise five years ago and has since won several accolades and seen the business go from strength to strength. Meanwhile, equalling her salon’s success was Saks Aberdeen, which also took home prizes for Customer Care and Salon

of the Year as well as Skills Therapist and Beauty Post Graduate. One of the evening’s highlights was the unveiling of the Saks Photographic Image Awards entries, which showcased the creative talents of some of the company’s finest stylists. The winners included newcomer Taylor King from Saks Great Yarmouth, who won the Junior Photographic Image Award for his directional session styling look; John Goddard of Saks Skipton who took home the Men’s Image Award for take on a must-have men’s cut and colour; and Amy Curran from Saks Altincham branch who was presented with the Avant-Garde Image Award for her “inspirational” image. Saks Hair and Beauty is one of the UK’s biggest salon franchise companies and boasts 130 branches nationwide. Last year it unveiled an international strategy and opened a salon in Mumbai with a view to launch a 200-strong network over the new five years. Meanwhile, the group also boasts another salon in Dubai.

INDUSTRY UPDATE Essex salon launches television-style competition in support of local employment campaign for young people

Southern salon group Headlines Hairdressing has launched a competition to find a new apprentice in support of Echo Newspapers’ Getting Essex Back To Work campaign. Mirroring the format of BBC show The Apprentice, Essex youngsters will be put through their paces via a series of “simple tasks” on the salon floor. Managing director Simon Harris has teamed up with the Central Training Group, one of City and Guilds’ largest NVQ hairdressing providers in the UK, to offer the career opportunity for an aspiring stylist. The academy’s Billy Moore will whittle down the finalists who will then be called into the salon to be interviewed by a hairdressing panel. Martin McNeill, editorial director of Echo Newspapers and mastermind of the campaign, says: “We are delighted to be working alongside Headlines and Central to give a young person the opportunity to get their foot on the ladder of a career in hairdressing. “Our Getting Essex Back to Work campaign is all about promoting ways to employment – so it is especially pleasing that by working together on this innovative competition, we are actually creating an opportunity in what is currently a tough job market.”

Gossip frontwoman Beth Ditto is following in the collaborative footsteps of Lady Gaga this year by taking on a new ambassador role with MAC. The plus-size fashion icon is set to launch her own make-up range with the brand this June. And while they’re keeping tight lipped about its specifics, we’ve heard that “chola girls” may be one of Ditto’s sources of inspiration.

Bio Sculpture founder Elmien Scholtz wins global award for emerging entrepreneur Bio Sculpture founder Elmien Scholtz has been awarded with an Ernst and Young World Entrepreneur Award after scooping the Emerging Entrepreneur category in the South African chapter. The awards started in the US in 1986 and are now recognised as a global scheme – spanning over 140 cities in 50 countries – for successful business people. Having originally opened her own salon in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, Scholtz went on to launch Bio Sculpture Gel in 1988 offering the world’s first one-step soak-off coloured gel. Today her brand is exported to 39 countries and it sold over 2.4 million products in the year to August 2011. This year the founder hopes to grow the business further with the introduction of two new product lines.

Anne Veck hosted her annual salon awards ceremony last month in Oxford. Among the winners from the award winning stylist’s team was Tia Jacobs who won Most Loved Hairdresser and Men’s Hairdresser of the Year as well as Becky Stewart and Hannah Brown (pictured) who took home Creative Talent accolades. Following the success of its recent Rush Live event, Rush donated all the proceeds to the Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity – totalling almost £9,085. The money will go towards building a new area of the hospital set to open this spring. The salon group has been fundraising for the cause since the Hairaising appeal began and also donated £50,000 in 2010. The Richard Ward Hair and Metrospa celebrated its trainees’ success recently at the salon’s annual Apprentice of the Year Awards. While most of the winners were selected by a judging panel, the Junior of the Year Award – which went to Danielle Modlock – was voted by the salon’s senior team based on her work ethic and achievements throughout the year. Sweet Squared’s Samantha Sweet jetted to San Diego with her parents Simon and Gigi Rouse last month for Rhonda Benbo’s leaving party. Jim and Linda Nordstrom and John and Kristine Heffner, who were joined by an army of friends from all over the world, threw a huge party to say goodbye and celebrate the former vice president of international sales’ 23-year CND career.

Once the reserve of WAGs, they’ve become a sought-after transformation tool for shoots and catwalk shows – leading to them being accepted by the fashion elite. And moreover, with the majority of A-list stars sporting them for the red carpet,

Today there’s a colossal choice of systems on the market from micro loops to cold fusion and a range of temporary solutions that make creating length and volume even quicker and easier. Moreover, the modern systems are often kinder to the hair too. One of the latest advancements on the market is Great Lengths’ Multisonic system, which allows stylists to apply five bonds of hair at once – thus speeding up the application process considerably. “These days speed is just as important as the results achieved,” says Great Lengths ambassador Paul Faltrick. “Clients often get restless so quicker methods help them be more comfortable. Multisonic allows hairdressers to apply a full head in one to two hours.” The company offers over 55 shades of hair and says it has also updated its processing methods to ensure greater quality.

And although it’s not brand new, the company is touting its Strongest Link Mini Strands application system as a hot contender for micro-rings in 2012. Similar to its contemporary, mini strands of human hair are fed through a link with the client’s own hair and then pressed into place using its Supreme Pressing and Releasing tool. This offers a virtually invisible bond while the company promises it will last for at least three months and over 100 shampoos. But if you’re looking for a super quick client turnaround, Hair Contrast UK’s Tape On/Tape Off system offers a viable solution. Using wefts with waterproof tape attached, stylists can personalise and fit a full head in under an hour. Clients will then need to visit the salon every eight weeks for maintenance where the hair is removed and readjusted. Micro-ring extensions are also gaining momentum as the modern choice for hairdressers that want to offer natural results in super speedy time. The system’s popularity has also soared thanks to its promise of being kinder to the hair since no heat or adhesives are involved. Using tiny copper rings, the extension is threaded through the real hair and clamped down - leading to results that last up to four months. Moreover, depending on quality, the same hair can often be reapplied so

hen former TOWIE star Amy Childs stepped out in her ultra glam dressstyle salon uniform at the end of last year to open her new business venture, we knew it would spark a nationwide trend. Snubbing the more traditional salon wear styles she instead opted for sexy purple dresses by fashion label Hybrid featuring nipped in waists and capped sleeves. And with that, she’d brought the glamour back into beauty therapy. According to Hybrid’s Caroline Mills, the designs are an extension of Childs’ glamorous persona: “Amy’s well known for wearing fitted pencil skirt dresses and she was keen for her salon to mirror her image,” she explains. “However, while it was of course important for her staff to look great, Amy was adamant that her dresses had to be practical.” With this in mind, they were designed using a stretchy bengaline material that moves with the body and doesn’t ride up or restrict movement. Moreover, as the dresses come below the knee, they also have a split in the back so her team can walk around freely. While Hybrid’s dresses were created exclusively for Amy Childs’ Salon and the label isn’t planning on collaborating with any other beauty businesses, we’re already seeing the design’s influence across the industry. For SS12, a number of glamorous salon-specific pieces have entered the fold in a wide variety of on-trend colours and prints. There’s also been a stronger focus on feminine cuts and tailoring as well as luxe detailing including satin trims and diamantes. And for some, introducing



SALON UNIFORMS accessories such as scarves, belts and shoes has meant therapists can update their look for a fraction of the cost. But the biggest revelation for the season is the return of the dress. “The dress is definitely back,” says Inline’s Abi Briggs. “We’ve introduced two designs to our signature collection and both offer a fabulous feminine alternative to trouser and tunic suits.” Nicky Argyle from Cordcourt adds: “Dresses give a great corporate look and when worn with the salon logo or colours of the business, they bring a feminine edge to the world of beauty.”

The company has added a simple dress to its new line featuring tailored panels for a better fit along with a neat square neckline. Likewise La Beeby is also touting the dress as its one to watch and has created its Madeleine over the knee version to “flatter all shapes and sizes.” Meanwhile, Irish brand Diamond Designs has introduced three styles to its new collection including the Anna with a square neck and diamante zip, the Sophia in linen and the Nicole, which is its popular tunic re-worked into a dress. about deviating from a tunic, La Beeby’s Rosalie style is just as feminine but can be teamed with leggings or trousers. ith around 300,000 couples set to tie the knot in the UK this year spending an average of £20,000 each, weddings are a lucrative segment of the market to tap into. And with last year’s bridal idols including beauties such as the Duchess of Cambridge and Kate Moss, many will allocate a hefty sum for professional hair and beauty services in the run up to their big day. Indeed looking their very best has never been more important for today’s wedding belles. According to industry experts, introducing a bridal service to your menu should be viewed as a long-term business plan. “All salons should offer treatments for brides as they often invest in a lot of time and money prior to getting married,” explains Emma Schulz, education manager for Darphin. “You’ll find brides will have a selection of regular treatments over a six-month period to maintain their results before the big day. Many brides then become loyal regulars as once they return from their honeymoon, they feel they can’t live without your services.” Furthermore, others maintain that offering a full hair and beauty package so brides can get everything they need in one place is often the best way forwards: “Bridal parties no longer just think about their hair style for their big day but also want make-up, tanning, nails and much more,” says Philip Bell, creative director at Ishoka Hair and Beauty in Aberdeen. “So it’s important to offer a comprehensive service to brides if you are thinking about introducing a specific menu.”

that they will want a professional service in a professional environment,” says Bell. “It’s important to make them feel special and so it can help to have a dedicated consultation space where the bridal party can have some privacy.” Craig Chapman, owner of Craig Chapman Hair Design, adds: “There are so many options available to brides these days and a personal service will always be at the top of the list. You’re expected to allocate a generous amount of time so they feel special and not like you’re rushing through their consultation. They need to have faith that on what’s one of the biggest days of their life, they’ll be properly looked after.” For Schulz, booking in monthly facials six months prior to the client tying the knot is essential to “provide key results and maintain the skin’s radiance.” She recommends offering vitamin-enriched treatments, such as the Darphin Vitamin and Tangerine Revitalising Facial, to help produce a youthful glow. Meanwhile, the expert maintains that relaxation is just as important in the period leading up to the wedding because stress is bad for the body and mind. Spa Journey’s fusion of Balinese rituals including Thai, Japanese, Hawaiian and Indian techniques is the perfect way to promote relaxation and inner beauty. The company is currently offering a trial kit for each of its experiences including products,

Sunless tanning is also a key area of consideration for brides and most experts suggest a trial run prior to the wedding to decide on the correct colour and finish. “If a bride hasn’t had a tan before then suggest booking her in about a fortnight before,” says Xen-Tan UK’s Natalie Roche. “They can then book their next appointment for an afternoon two days before the wedding so the colour can develop all evening before the colour guide is washed off the next day leaving a natural sun-kissed hue.”

The wedding team

A bride’s hair is her crowning glory and getting this aspect of your service right is essential for successful. According to Chapman, the best way to achieve this is to form a bridal team dedicated to wedding parties. He says: “Not every stylist likes doing long hair up but it’s a vital service to have in the salon so start singling out the stylists that genuinely have a passion for it.” And with these in place, he recommends ongoing training and encouraging them to keep a keen eye on trends. “Take time to train your team making sure they can eventually execute a neat clean style that’s firmly held in place,” he says. “Keeping air up for a long period of time is absolutely vital for a bride. Most don’t want anything too fancy, but it is good to have a stylist on the team that understands the ornate, intricately designed looks of the past so as to reinterpret it for a modern look that’s relevant for today.” To avoid confusion and retain a personal service, Chapman suggests employing one main point of contact for each bride who can liaise on dates, appointments and their hair trial. “For me it’s our head receptionist who will deal with all the pricing and co-ordinate with the stylists involved, but this would then need to be passed to the head bridal stylist,” he says. “This of course doesn’t need to be the person who’s the best at putting the hair



BRIDAL SERVICES up, but someone who loves dealing with such a personal and bespoke service.” Or, if you’re thinking outside of the box with your services, London’s Brooks and Brooks has come up with a novel way of helping brides who are getting married abroad. For £100, international hair stylist Valerie Benavides gives them a 90-minute lesson on how to prep, style and finish their hair themselves. And to make sure nothing goes wrong, the bride-to-be is also emailed with her own how-to guide.

Beauty essentials

While the hair is often the key focus for brides, their skin is just as important. So if you’re thinking of offering a bridal package, incorporating make-up and skin finishing into your menu is essential. At Aveda, all of its assistants learn how to offer finishing touches to their clients’ make-up using its range of natural-based products. Moreover, both of its academies in London and Manchester offer make-up and skin care classes for those wanting to make the service an integral part of their salon menu (Tel: 0870 428 6383). “Getting married is such a busy time for any bride so if you can make her feel well cared for

Likewise, Lisa Shepherd Salons has just introduced New CID Cosmetics (Newcidcosmetics.com) to its portfolio and Sutton Coldfield franchisee Emma Steven is using the range on brides. The salon offers a full spectrum of services for all female members of the bridal party with its in-house make-up artists. “The products are perfectly packaged, great quality and highly pigmented so they’re long wearing, which is great for the big day,” she says. Meanwhile, hot behind the heels of eyelash extensions, eyebrows are becoming today’s ultimate facial accessory – and it’s no exception for brides. Award winning celebrity beauty artist Tahira Wells has launched her own brand, Ilah Brows, to offer salons everything they need to create natural results. Anne Veck, who runs a highly lucrative bridal division within her salon group, suggests hooking up with local wedding suppliers to generate good word-of-mouth. “I phoned all the hotel and wedding venues in my area and asked to speak to the event coordinator,” she says. “I then introduced myself and sent samples of work.” Alternatively, Chapman recommends attending local wedding fairs to showcase your services. “You can talk to so many people this way and though you might not always get a booking, it will give you great exposure.” Lastly, don’t lose sight of why you’re adding a bridal service to your menu: to make money. aving taken the bold move of opening a salon in the midst of a recession, James Davis, owner of the Clay Salon and Spa in Oxshott, Surrey, says there was no doubt in his mind about the timing: “It was now or never,” he says. And now, with two years’ trading under his belt, his gamble has paid off. In 2011, the owner planned to increase the salon’s turnover by 50 per cent month on month, but it actually consecutively rose by 100 per cent. So how did he do it?

BUSINESS TIP ONE: Don’t let obstacles get in the way

“At some point your business will face major challenges,” Davis explains. “Not just small issues that need a bit of attention, but major factors that could seriously send the business under. But never, ever, let these challenges make you question why you are in business or let them get the better of you. “I was burgled, twice, in the first year of trading, then we had a major fire in 2011 – and believe me, these were all extremely large issues to overcome. In the case of the fire we had to close the salon for two weeks and needed a £50,000 refurbishment. But we got through the crisis, the team pulled together and we made home visits and set up an office/call centre in a nearby hotel. “The best thing I did in this situation was employing a business consultant to manage the claim. It was a massive advantage because it took a lot of the stress away and meant that nothing was overlooked. “Both the burglaries and the fire made me put measures in place that I wouldn’t have done otherwise, and I believe my business is stronger as a result. It also made me realise what a fantastic team I have around me, and how valuable each member is to me. I can’t change what happened and looking back, I’ve learnt a lot from the obstacles that we have faced.”

BUSINESS TIP TWO: Watch the bottom line – always

“Profit is sanity and turnover is vanity. From day one I have always focussed on the bottom line figures because in my mind this is what makes sense. You can be turning over ten million pounds a year but still not be in profit. So while turnover is of course important, it is the profit that keeps a business afloat.”

I guess we all know the answers to challenges that we face deep down, but having someone take a completely impartial look at your business is a huge help.”

BUSINESS TIP FIVE: Get involved in the local community and charities

“I strongly believe that you get out of life what you put into it, and it’s no difference with business. I have always supported local charities and organisations, volunteering whenever I can and donating prizes from the salon, and it has most

For example I was asked to get involved in the Runnymede Youth Conference, a local organisation that helps guide young people into their future careers and make the right decisions in life. As a result, last year I presented a talk with PR guru Max Clifford who is also involved in it, and we’ve built a great relationship. I also sponsor a local charity and football team, the Oxshott Royals. The club is run solely on volunteers and relies on sponsors to keep it afloat. It’s been great publicity for my business and I am happy to be part of the community here in Oxshott. We also have a very close bond with the Shooting Star Chase hospice for children where we are in regular contact and supporting the kids the best we can. Meanwhile we also pamper the mums and nurses that are often forgotten with the amount of dedication and hard work they put in.”

BUSINESS TIP SIX: Finally just because the media is telling us we’re in a recession, don’t talk yourself into it

“The reality is that we are of course in a recession, and I think the worst is yet to come. But I strongly believe you have to remain positive, start thinking outside the box, make sure that you are offering a great service and experience and watch the figures like you’ve never watched them before. If you know to the penny what you need to break even every week, and are aware of how much each staff member needs to be making, then you’re half way there. But don’t think that just because we are in a recession that your business has to suffer – it doesn’t. And if you’re on top of it, you can make it thrive, even in these hard times.”

he immense marketing powers of Facebook are catching on in the industry. We’re seeing increasing numbers of salon owners redirecting their time and budget, previously earmarked for offline marketing campaigns or sophisticated websites, to this thriving, pulsating hub of activity. But as with all effective marketing, the more you know about your campaigns the better placed you are to develop the next. The great news is that it’s easy to monitor and measure the success of your Facebook page. And best of all, it’s free! Sitting behind your page and visible only to you is Facebook Insights, a range of analytical tools that reveal instantly whether a page is thriving or underperforming. There are a lot of numbers to understand but to start with, I’m going to familiarise you with what Insights has to offer. Keep in mind it’s not available to profile pages so if you’re still directing clients to become your friend, now’s the time to launch a business page. To access Insights, find the purple icon either underneath the pictures of all your administrators on the right-hand side or underneath your page image. Insights is undergoing an update at the moment, so you need to ensure that you’re viewing the

latest version. To do this, click the link that says ‘Take me to the new Insights’. Here you’ll see an array of different categories, each one as wonderful as the next:

General stats

The first screen you’ll see is an overview, which includes the key measurement (metrics) that Facebook considers the most important. Focus on improving these numbers and your marketing experience will be much better. This section focuses on performance and includes a useful graph showing the key metrics over the previous 30 days. It also shows your posts during that same time period with some key stats about which engaged users, had the most reach, got people talking or any virality.

Fans

This screen is exactly what you think – it’s all about your fans. These are basic demographics, but one thing that always throws people off is where your fans are from. Most people think they must be from the surrounding area, but think again. Many a salon has been surprised to find only half of the people they are talking to on Facebook are capable of setting foot in their salon. Monitoring these numbers is key.

Reach

This section is about how far your messages on Facebook are making it in terms of exposure. The larger your reach, the more people have been exposed to your message in either the news feed, the ticker or on their friends’ walls. This section is really vital for understanding how many people your information is reaching. Contrary to popular belief, your updates are not seen by every person that has liked your page. So knowing whom your messages are reaching is key to continued success.

Talking about this

This is a relatively new section, which also comes with a public stat on your homepage. If you have a business page, you’ve probably already seen this by now. This section is all about who has created a story about your page or one of your stories. Why is this important? Because this is the new word-of-mouth and you should be tracking it. “We always discuss our ideas. We have found that using each other as a sounding board provides a new perspective on an issue that was invisible to our own. We’ve found this so helpful that we hold regular staff meetings that are no holds barred discussions about any aspect of the business. Every member of staff, from the apprentices to the directors, is allowed a say and the results are always fantastic and eye opening.

Get away from it all: it is important to remember you are together for more reasons than just business

“Work-free holidays and work free weekends are incredibly important. We need that space to remember that we are much more than just business partners. We have incorporated this idea into working with the team. We make sure that we plan regular events where talk of work is banned and fun is at the top of the agenda.
