Rainbow Room International named among winners of Creative Head’s Most Wanted 2012 awards

O

ver 600 of hairdressing’s finest stylists, educators and brand representatives attended Creative Head’s Most Wanted Grand Final last month to celebrate the industry’s most talented stars. Held at London’s Royal Courts of Justice, guests – who included judges Johnnie Sapong, Lyndell Mansfield and Professor Louise Wilson OBE – attended a Prosecco and Cointreau reception where they nibbled on canapés, networked and listened to DJ sets by Alicat and Jeff Automatic. Afterwards the crowd headed to the building’s Great Hall to sit down for a three-course meal before Creative Head’s

Lauren Margrave and Amanda Nottage joined comedians Seann Walsh and Stephen K Amos on stage to reveal the evening’s winners. Ten covetable awards were up for grabs ranging from Best Online Salon to Best Local Salon, Business Thinker, Hair Trend and Colour Expert. Among the winners included London’s Brooks and Brooks who scooped this year’s prize for Creative Talent; Glasgow’s Rainbow Room International (pictured), whose solid training and incentives schemes won it the accolade of Best Salon Team; and Vogue hairdresser Sam McNight who was awarded with the Session Stylist title. Meanwhile, the most hotly anticipated

award of the night for Hair Icon went to ghd creative director and session star Zoe Irwin. Creative Head also announced the first winners of its Legend Award. Those that win the same category three times will now be elevated to legend status and the roll call now includes Strands Hairdressing for Best Salon Team and Headmasters for Best Online Salon. Rainbow Room International franchisees Dylan Brittain and Yasmin McMail commented on their award: “We’re just so proud of our team. Every member works so hard to give our clients the ultimate hairdressing experience and we’re absolutely delighted.”

Salon furniture brand Welonda re-launches in UK German salon furniture supplier Welonda has re-launched globally after being bought out by Dutch company Keila. The 60-year-old brand is now being distributed in the UK and Ireland by Salonitems – a company founded in 2010 by former Welonda MD Gary Justice – after collapsing in 2010 under parent company Procter and Gamble. Dame Kelly Holmes shaves London stylist’s head to raise money for HABB Dame Kelly Holmes helped a London stylist raise money for HABB recently by shaving her head. The Stress Exchange’s Barbara Comerford, who has been a member of the London Bridge salon’s team for eight years, shed her hair to collect money for HABB on behalf of the National Hairdresser’s Federation (NHF). Double Olympic champion Holmes, who is a regular client of the salon, agreed to support the event to raise funds for the industry charity, which is dedicated to helping hair and beauty professionals facing difficulties in life. The salon is currently working towards raising a total of £5,000 through various activities concluding with Ian Egerton, NHF secretary for the London region, cycling 400 kilometres in five days. Over 20,000 guests witnessed the talents of Mizani hairdressers at last month’s Africa Fashion Week London. Held inside Spitalfields Market, 14 stylists from Mizani salons Hype Coiffure, Angela Gaudi, Asphair, Asquared, Kizure and Zigzag created a series of fashion-forward styles to complement the African-inspired themes and collections over the two-day celebration. The team at Clipso Hemel Hempstead celebrated the salon’s thirtieth birthday with their clients last month with cake and champagne. To mark the milestone the salon also offered customers a 19.82 per cent discount on all cuts and colours throughout the month in homage to the year it first opened its doors.

The owner of Chichester’s Q Hair and Beauty celebrated the salon’s 40-year anniversary recently by treating his team to a race day at Fontwell Park Racecourse. Industry figureheads including the NHF’s Ian Egerton and 365’s Di Tickler joined owner Anthony Barnes-Smith and MD Dawn Lawrence for the celebrations, which included a fully catered hospitality box for the entire entourage. Thirty-three of Nail Harmony’s UK educators jetted out to Los Angeles last month for the brand’s annual training event. Over one hundred techs representing 24 countries attended to re-sit their qualifications to maintain or raise their status while gaining new knowledge and updated techniques.

The hair industrial revolution Promising to offer the most advanced formaldehydefree formulation on the market, British brand Keratin Revolution is set for global domination

B

ack in 2009, the keratin treatments sector of the hair industry was on the cusp of facing a backlash. Clients had initially been drawn to the promise of long-lasting frizz-free locks and many were prepared to invest hundreds of pounds and multiple hours in the salon chair for such results. That was until reports began surfacing about the safety of the treatment’s key ingredient: formaldehyde. During that period, industry entrepreneurs Ben Collins and Martin Gallagher began a quest to create a product that mirrored the results these formulations offered but crucially without any of the undesirable chemicals. “We had been on a trip to the US and had noticed the growing demand for keratin treatments,” says Collins. “However, after some research, it became clear that they contained potentially harmful ingredients; we decided that if we wanted to enter the market it would have to be with a formulation that didn’t pose any potential health threats to hairdressers or consumers.” With this in mind, the duo invested

capital into researching and developing a new generation keratin treatment. And in 2010, months after they first began testing, Keratin Revolution was born. “Our USP was clear,” says Collins. “We were the first brand to launch a keratin treatment that was 100 per cent free of formaldehyde, aldehydes or ureas.” New for this year the company launched its Ultra Smooth System, which it says is the “most advanced formaldehyde-free formula on the market”. Moreover, its easy-touse process is straightforward for stylists to master while the system offers salon owners the potential to make high profits. Its benefits have seen it grow from an initial start-up brand to a key industry player with partnerships with key distribution companies and international partners in 10 countries worldwide. As well as offering its hero professional in-salon treatment, the brand also supplies salons with retail products so they can increase revenue while clients can care for their hair at home. One of its best sellers

is the Infused Deep Conditioning Masque, which is a restructuring treatment for all hair types and uses thermo reactive ingredients such as hydrolysed keratin and jojoba oil to nourish and restore the hair. Keratin Revolution offers salons a starter package for £99, which includes enough formula for around five clients. “If you charge the recommended £120 – £150 per treatment, you can see how this is a revenue-rich service,” says Collins. Moreover, as it is a straightforward service for stylists to master, minimal training is needed while the brand supplies a comprehensive brochure detailing the process step-by-step. While it is still a relatively new brand on the market, Collins has big ambitions for its future: “It’s a personal mission of mine to put Keratin Revolution on the world map when it comes to highly recognisable hair care brands.” To achieve this, the company plans to increase its share of the UK market by continuing to build our network of salon stockists while investing in consumertargeted PR. “We will also continue to invest significantly into research and development,” Collins concludes. “We already have a number of new products in the pipeline and as a business we will continue to be at the forefront of innovation within the sector.” Salon International Stand H105. She also says that the company’s pricing plan has been designed to cater for all budgets. “We’re using a subscription model and we’re offering our most basic package for under £26 per month – a small investment for a potentially big return,” she adds. “So aside from speed of the technology and features the app gives, we hope this flexibility and affordability will encourage health and beauty salons to take a serious look at what we’re offering.” She concludes: “We want to destroy

the myth that self-branded apps are only for big blue-chip companies. So if you want to make the most of the occasion, preparation is key. For some, starting the proceedings straight after Bonfire Night is too early. “We begin from the first day of December and the reason for this is to keep our decorations looking fresh and to avoid irritating out clients,” says Nick Bland, manager of Haringtons in Soho. However, for others, keeping up with retailers and introducing decorations at least six weeks before the big day is an essential part of a successful festive strategy. “We like to have everything ready in November so it prompts clients to book their appointments in plenty of time,” says Julia Gaudio at Elajé Hair and Beauty in Cambridge.

f you take your lead from the high street’s biggest retailers, it’s never too early to get customers into the Christmas spending spirit. From the beginning of next month, Britain’s most influential stores will break out the tinsel, turn up the festive tunes and generally use every Christmas hook they can think of to

persuade shoppers to enter their doors. November and December is of course one of the busiest times for the salon industry. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for a promotional drive to boost bookings and retail sales to ensure 2012 goes out with a bang. The season offers two main

Retailers use their windows to draw in customers, much like magazines use imagery and text on their front covers. Some of the major department stores dedicate an entire team and a full 12 months to getting their Christmas windows just right. So to keep up with competition on the high street, salons need to put aside time and budget to create a crowd-pleasing display. Working with product houses to achieve the right message is a move favoured by many of the industry’s biggest players. Steve Rowbottom, director for North England group Westrow, aligns his salons’ displays with a chosen manufacturer’s marketing campaign and creates bespoke windows with a co-ordinated colour scheme and artwork. “Last year we worked our window campaign in-line with the ghd Scarlet stylers, opting for a traditional red and silver colour scheme to complement ghd’s imagery,” he says. “Westrow’s window campaign artwork incorporated candy-floss hair imagery, which was created using hundreds of illustrated candy canes. This worked well with our ‘Love Your Hair’ slogan and went down a storm with clients, as it was fun and festive.” This year the team has opted for a frosted window design featuring circular non-frosted portholes that will allow clients and passers by to see visuals set behind. This will be again aligned with its chosen manufacturer’s 2012 campaign. Rowbottom adds: “Our aim is to entice

Windows should be fresh and offer an insight into your brand – after all it’s the window into your hairdressing world so it needs to speak volumes about the products and services you offer inside.” For inspiration, many salon owners look to major Central London retailers. “Regent Street is always the most inspiring place to be and is packed with memorable windows,” says Gaudio. “We generally look at the big stores like Selfridges while M&S and Next are also very inspiring.” Bland adds: “We love to take our inspiration from the big iconic London stores such as Harvey Nichols and Liberty. We like to give people looking into Haringtons’ window display a similar feeling but on a smaller scale.” And he isn’t the only salon owner with a grand vision. Robert Masciave of Metropolis Hairdressing in Kingston aims to come up with an extra special window every December to reflect the magical time of year. “We’ve had so many fantastic displays in the past but there are a few that really stand out,” he says. “We created a window display that looked like the inside of a sparkling champagne drink with bubbles drawing the clients in. I’ve also created a hair chandelier inspired by one of my collections, which seemed to make an impact. But one of my favourites has to be the enchanted winter tree we created, which looked as though it was growing inside of the salon and windows. It looked like a fine art installation leaving

every visitor fascinated and inspired.”

Baby it’s cold outside But for those salons that can’t install a momentous window display, decorating the salon inside can have a worthwhile affect on getting clients into the festive mood. Ishoka Hairdressing and Beauty in Aberdeen works its Georgian townhouse setting to its full advantage by enlisting the skills of a design company. “Because we’re in a townhouse we don’t have any street appeal apart from the building itself so we dress the interior instead,” says managing partner Malcolm MacNeil. “We have a florist who creates amazing displays each week using seasonal produce and at Christmas we have a company that comes in and dresses the entire salon.” Last year the team created a nostalgic display decorating the salon’s fireplace with colourful presents and a life size model of Father Christmas. “The building lends itself to being decorated,” says MacNeil. “We have a marble fireplace in the reception area, which is furnished with sofas and chairs – clients love to relax there and look at the decorations. One year we had handmade angels on invisible wire with glitter beads running down it – it looked beautiful and we received lots of great comments from clients.” If employing dedicated decorators is out of your budget (or you just want to get creative yourself) there are various retail suppliers selling festive finishing

products available for delivery now. CHRISTMAS PREPARATIONS your key product suppliers is often the best way to make the most of visual merchandising opportunities as many have various options on offer. “We are very big on retailing anyway and stock a wide range of products,” agrees Gaudio. “So we’ll work alongside our suppliers to promote the packages they’ve launched for the year.” With many product houses unveiling special Christmas sets and limited edition products this month, making the most of them in displays is essential to maximise sales. “It’s important to have visual merchandising as people don’t automatically think of their salon as a place to buy Christmas gifts,” says Bland. “We want to show clients that we offer seasonal gifts that they might not realise we sell. If a client buys merchandise from the salon once, they may buy more in the future.” Masciave adds: “From a commercial point of view we need to make the most of the clients’ spending frame of mind, capitalising on the opportunity by drawing them in and staying ahead of our competitors.” At Ishoka last year clients were offered

aks Education is living up to its reputation as a pioneer by taking part in an innovative new project. The award-winning education provider has linked up with one of the country’s first free academies to deliver hair and beauty therapy qualifications to its students. “Hipperholme and Lightcliffe School in West Yorkshire’s Calderdale launched The Maltings College venture in September 2012 as one of 102 new-style schools spearheaded by the prime minister over the summer. The college aims to meet employer demand in the area through the provision of carefully targeted courses in

an employer-led, state-of-the-art workrelated facility. “Saks Education has been subcontracted by the new academy to deliver a range of hair and beauty qualifications to its students. lient retention is an art form. But with an increasingly competitive salon market, strategies to target this have become ever more complex. When I first started out in the industry, a good cut and colour at a reasonable price used to pretty much guarantee clients coming back again and again. However, with savvy consumers and the growth of online marketing, clients these days are more tempted to shop around. “For that reason, it’s very important that you segment your audiences when devising your salon marketing strategy. You need to have a series of strategies that target new clients while systematically retaining existing ones. The bottom line is that you need to ensure your clients love you and are not swayed in any way to try a competitor. “We invest heavily in campaigns that encourage our clients to return again and again. Ensuring client retention is just as important a part of our marketing strategy as traditional advertising and PR. “You need to give your clients a reason to choose you over and above your competitors. You need to go that little bit further and do that little bit extra to keep them talking about you and to keep your brand at the forefront of their minds. “Loyalty programmes are a good way to inspire people to return. At The Stuart Holmes Hair and Beauty Spa, we recently launched Indulgence: a bespoke programme that has been designed especially for us to reward our clients for their custom. “The aim is to provide customers with

they are given a personalised black loyalty card that they can show when obtaining their rewards. The card has their loyalty number on the back which also grants them access to the indulgence loyalty membership area on our website. “Intelligent use of our Indulgence database also means we can indulge our clients in other ways. For example, we can send birthday cards and vouchers to clients on their birthdays, anniversary treats for clients who used us for their wedding hair and thank you rewards to clients who consistently have a high average spend. “We also provide our staff with a mechanism for them to indulge their clients. The stylists are the ones predominately building the relationship and they are the ones who may pick up on key events in a client’s life. Stylists know that they can put someone forward for a spot of indulgence and we as the salon management team will ensure the necessary action is taken. This may range from a bunch of flowers or cupcakes sent to the client’s home to complimentary products. We recently had a customer who had a health scare and was very distressed when she visited the salon. To show that we care, we paid for her stylist to send out a little gift to show her we were thinking about her. “Making your clients feel special is so important and a critical part of successful client retention.
