SAS Aesthetics is proud to support the charity CAMFED (The Campaign for Female Education) to provide other aspiring women with the opportunity to achieve their full potential. CAMFED provides educational support for marginalised young women in sub- Saharan Africa to create the future they imagine. SAS Aesthetics are generously committing to the provision of 720 days of education each quarter, which guarantees 16 girls stay in education each year.

Dr Mahsa Saleki said: “At SAS, we are fortunate enough to make people feel good about themselves every day and through this amazing initiative we get to spread that positivity far beyond the clinic, giving opportunity through education to those that would not otherwise have access to it.”

Scullion & Scot win the L’Oréal Colour Trophy UK Grand Final!

Having just celebrated their second birthday, Scullion & Scot won their first competition – the hugely prestigious L’Oreal Colour Trophy, judged by the UK’s most experienced hair talent – and in front of 1900 people at London’s Battersea Evolution. The winning look involved sectioning a halo panel around the perimeter of the model’s head in an urban deep green, which was met with a fine sheet of vivid yellow, directly layered over the top. The team is now looking forward to exploring new concepts and ways they can take their guest experiences to the next level.

After such a strong start, co-founders Gemma and Jade can’t wait to see what the future holds for Scullion & Scot! www.scullionandscot.co.uk

Wella takes Paris!

Wella Professionals recently hosted an exclusive gathering for its Wella RED members, in the heart of Paris at the stunning Musée des Arts Décoratifs. Wella RED is an exclusive business partnership programme, that focuses on community, education and rewards, and this occasion ticked all the boxes as the group gathered in Paris to celebrate the Des Cheveux et des poils exhibition. The incredible exhibition explores the relationship between the body and fashion with an exhibition on hair styles and body hair grooming. The exhibition explores 600 works, from the 15th century to the present day, the themes inherent in the history of hairstyles, but also the questions related to facial and bodily hair.

“It was truly wonderful to be in the fashion capital of the world, with some of our exclusive RED members, celebrating our heritage. RED is a completely unique programme that unites, inspires and educates our community. This entire event has been spectacular, as has the hair shows by our Wella artists, which all culminated in a truly memorable event for everyone,” said Head of Education Craft & Community, UK & Ireland, Allison Hargreaves.

without skimping on premium quality.

What sets Sugalane apart from others on the market is our 15 years of experience and in the hair extension industry. The knowledge we’ve gained, means we understand the gap that needs to be filled and the demand for high-quality synthetic hair extensions.

What makes salon-friendly?Sugalane

Sugalane has been designed with salons in mind, which is why you will find our synthetic range follows a traditional hair extension colouring system. Therefore, if you have a client who usually has a colour six in human hair extensions, the Sugalane colour six will likely also be suitable.

Picking a colour can be hard for wearers, so we recommend joining our approved salons list to bring in potential clients looking for a colour match in their area with the incentive to purchase at an approved salon discounted rate.

Creating confidence

This month Kirsty Jones features as our Rising Star. As the proud owner of Kirsty Jones Beauty, she reveals how she perfected her skills to stand out and the importance of good client relationships for a successful business.

When did you notice your passion for beauty?

This stems right back to my years of performing in dance shows when I was younger. I’ve been sticking false lashes on and perfecting winged liner for as long as I can remember with my competition makeup, which was always ‘go big or go home’. I’ve always been creative, but it wasn’t until I pursued makeup and beauty at college level that I realised my childhood passion could be turned into a business. The beauty industry is always evolving and welcoming new treatments that can enhance a person’s natural beauty, to make them feel their most confident version of themselves. I always felt an immense amount of satisfaction in helping my friends and family feel even more beautiful, and it’s a bonus that I get to make my clients feel that way too!

How did you find your style, and what are your tips for other beauty professionals trying to stand out?

To find your style in our creative industry, I recommend trying multiple methods and products to find exactly what best suits you. We work in an ever-changing industry, and to keep up to speed with other professionals you have to learn about the latest trends and adapt your style to what is desirable to your clients at that time. If you told me when I first started out in beauty that I would be ‘laminating’ brows for a living, I would have laughed! So, my tip for standing out would be to never stop educating yourself on new treatments and add-on

services, you have to stay ahead of the game in order to stand out.

How did you build your client base?

A lot of my client base has come from word of mouth, and I’m so grateful for the clients that have become some of my closest friends. I think getting your personality across during appointments is a key part to success in this industry, as you build a relationship with your clients to become comfortable in your presence. After all, you spend a lot of time with your clients one on one, and having regular returning clients that you know are happy with your services is the most rewarding feeling.

What tips would you give to a beauty professional starting their social media platform?

I think if you enjoy making the content you’re putting out there, you’ll never feel the overwhelming pressure of trying to grow your business on social media. I recommend posting the work that you are most passionate about, this creates a great portfolio with the work you love most.

How do you market your services?

Aside from social media marketing, I found my online booking system to be one of the best forms of marketing for my business. It allows my clients to easily see my availability and book their own appointments without the back and forth of messaging. This also takes a huge amount of pressure off me having a full inbox after leaving the salon, I’ve also seen my bookings increasing since using this platform.

What are your goals for the future and how do you plan on achieving them?

I find my goals are constantly changing, but one I’ve thought a lot about is starting 1-1 classes in lash lifts and brow laminations. This is my favourite and most popular treatment which is rising in demand as a lot of clients are opting for low maintenance treatments, so I’d love to help others in the industry perfect this. Another goal would be to elevate the environment to work in for both me and my clients, I enjoy interior design and I’m always looking to improve my workspace and make it more comfortable for my client’s treatments.

Don’t Bottle It!

In an exclusive interview with the team at Cano Water, we discover their sleek and stylish water that can enhance a salon’s sustainable reputation whilst elevating the client experience.

Please introduce us to the brand and where the idea came from?

In 2014, after seeing the devastating effects of plastic pollution in Thailand, our founders, Josh, Ariel and Perry came together to create a better solution than plastic bottles of water.

Spotting a lot of brands they knew from home, bottled water seemed to be the biggest culprit. This got the friends thinking and after a lot of research, they discovered that aluminium recycles forever and is the most re-used drinks container on earth, according to global figures from the International Aluminium Institute (AI).

They were blown away by the stats, recognising the benefits of aluminium packaging, leading them to introduce the UK’s first canned water brand to the market, starting a journey powered by purpose and fuelled by authenticity and passion.

How can Cano Water elevate the client experience within a salon?

Combining a sustainable and convenient alternative to single-use plastic, with an eye-catching design, Cano Water will offer your clients a luxurious experience

to enhance their salon visit and leave them feeling their best.

What makes Cano Water stand out from other refreshment options on the market?

Cano Water has never sold a plastic bottle and never will. With both resealable and ring pull options, packaged in sleek and minimalistic black and white cans, Cano Water stands out from the rest, offering a premium feel. Sourced and filled directly at the foothills of the Austrian Alps, our water is pure and tastes incredible. Sealed from light

and air, our still and sparkling natural spring water cans stay cooler and fresher for longer, ensuring freshness with every sip.

How can our readers work with you?

Editor’s Day Out

Loft Studios hosted the Fellowship F.A.M.E Team Semi-Finals and our Editor Brooke attended to get the inside scoop on the hopeful stylists who battled it out by showcasing their skills in hairdressing to make it into the finals.

Iarrived to a rustic court yard and was met by a lively gathering of Fellowship members, salon owners and hairdressing experts. The passionate stylists I spoke with set the tone for the rest of the evening, which was filled with talent and ambition.

Once we had all enjoyed a few prosecco’s, we were seated, with the star-studded judging panel lining the front of the crowd. Multi award-winning stylist and President of the Fellowship, Robert Eaton and Vice President, Ashleigh Hodges, welcomed us as our hosts for the evening and explained the significance of this year’s F.A.M.E Team as the recognised platform celebrates its 30th year.

The lights beamed and the music roared as the first group of models, styled by the hopeful finalists, took to the stage. There were four groups of models which the ambitious semifinalists had styled to grab their spot at the finals and make it one step closer to being a member on the prestigious F.A.M.E Team. What heightened this challenge’s difficulty? The groups only met one another that morning and had to collectively agree on a concept and deliver it to the stage.

The first set of models showcased hair inspired by the 80s, with energetic styles using texture to create mullets

and perms. Then the second group’s ‘Barbenheimer’ models filled the stage with vibrant hair delivering a ‘grunge’ effect. Next up, the third group’s ‘Broken Twin Show’ which used models in pairs to show opposing styles. These looks were created using hair pieces and wefts to create bold silhouettes and 3D elements. The final group was named ‘Celestial’ and took inspiration from the fantasy element of the world. They used the model’s hair to create an ethereal vibe with mixed textures.

After the show, past F.A.M.E Team members were brought on stage for an insightful Q&A with Robert, where they

spoke about the invaluable experience and career opportunities their year as a team member presented to them. After, the current F.A.M.E Team members were welcomed to talk about the shoots they’ve been working on together, this only inspired the contenders more to excel and secure their spot on the next team.

To finish the evening, the 2024 F.A.M.E Team finalists were announced, their delight showed the compassion they share for their career and the importance of recognising talent and industry platforms like The Fellowship.

Lift Off!

HIVE® of Beauty and Saskia Ingham, Owner of Saskia Brow & Lash Specialists, demonstrate how to achieve beautifully lifted lashes and fantastic fluffy brows, with just one product range in this exclusive Create This Style.

Offering lash lifts and brow laminations, two of the most in-demand beauty treatments, will not only ensure that your business has an abundance of bookings, but it also creates great content for your salon’s social channels.

Lash lifts are a convenient way for clients who are not comfortable having semi-permanent lashes attached or find strip lashes difficult to apply, to achieve the desired look of voluminous, longer natural eyelashes within a low maintenance beauty regime.

Brow lamination offers clients with thick, unruly hair a way to have their eyebrows tamed into a beautiful and complimentary shape with the “fluffy” look without having the daily maintenance of brushing or applying brow gel. For clients with finer or lighter hair they can have their brow shaped to cover sparse areas creating the illusion of fuller eyebrows.

treatments involve a chemical reaction that begins with the disulphide bonds being broken down, allowing the lashes and brows to be moulded in to the desired position and shape. Once the hairs have taken on their new shape, a treatment lotion is applied which promotes an oxidisation action, fixing the hair structure in the new shape and restores the disulphide bonds. Finally, a conditioning serum is applied to moisturise and nourish.

The talented Saskia Ingham, shows just what a difference these treatments can make to a client’s overall appearance.

Saskia’s Top Tips

Lash Lift Tip

Using the lifting tool, carefully lift and position the lashes onto the shield. Ensure they look exactly how you want them to look prior to applying the treatment products. How the lashes look on the shield is how they will look once removed off the shield, so take your time!

Brow Lamination Tip

Remove the product from the top of the brow hairs first. This will help to avoid them going curly by over processing, as the hair is thinner at the ends.

Step one

After assessing the lashes, clean the lashes and surrounding area, then using the HIVE® Bonding Serum (B) secure the Lifting Shields (A) to the eyelid. Using the lifting tool, lift the lashes onto the shield into place. Once secured, apply HIVE® Dual Lifting Crème (1) from the root of the lash to a third of the way up the length of the lash for between five to eight minutes, the time will vary dependent upon the condition and type of the client’s lashes.

Step two

Remove HIVE® Dual Lifting Crème (1) with a cotton bud or micro applicator, then apply HIVE® Dual Treatment Lotion (2) for a maximum of five minutes, then remove with a cotton bud. Tinting is an optional extra, Prepare the chosen colour of tint, in this case HIVE® No. 3 Twilight Blue/Black and apply to the lashes, ensuring full coverage.

Step three

After leaving the tint on for approximately five minutes, remove with a lip wand brush. Then carefully remove the lashes from the shield and clean the eye lid. Ensure the surrounding treatment area is also clean, apply HIVE® Dual Treatment Lotion (3) to the lashes, gently releasing them from the shield. Applying a small amount of HIVE® Dual Treatment Lotion (3) under the Lash Shield will help to remove it comfortably. Dry the lashes and gentle brush through them.

Step four

Apply a thin coat of HIVE® Bonding Serum (B) slowly and carefully straighten the hair, setting the hair in the direction and shape required with a mascara brush. Ensure sparse areas are covered, curly hairs are straightened, and brow hair is in the correct direction to add shape and definition to the brows.

Step five

Apply a thin coat of HIVE® Dual Lash Lifting Créme (1) to the brow hair, applying it closer to the roots for the hair to be set in the selected direction after procedure. Apply it to the entire hair to soften thicker hair and straighten curly strands. Leave on for the appropriate time, depending on the thickness and density of the hair.

Step six

Apply a small amount of HIVE® Dual Lash Treatment Lotion (2) to where the Lifting Crème (1) was applied using a micro-applicator. Tinting the brows is an optional extra. Apply HIVE® Lash Conditioning Serum (3) over the brows using a cotton bud or micro-applicator.

The 24 Hour Salon

We talk to industry experts and learn how to use the latest developments in technology to earn revenue in your salon after hours.

Technology is increasingly playing a vital role in boosting the revenue and the productivity of salons. The process of introducing new technology into your business can be daunting, so it’s important to know the benefits before diving in.

Osman Sow, Co-Founder of Superbooking, explained how the industry is witnessing a transformative

In essence, technology should assist in every aspect of salon management, leaving professionals to focus on what they do best— providing top-notch services.

shift and how making use of the new platforms on offer will help increase bookings: “Salons that do not utilise online booking systems may risk missing out on customers who prefer to schedule their services during non-working hours, such as Sundays or evenings.”

Not only do these platforms increase bookings, they save time, meaning your stylists can spend more time taking care of clients, elevating the salon experience. Instead of the time consuming process of messaging to set up each individual appointment, booking platforms eliminate this task with an automated system.

Booking platforms like Superbooking also benefit online footfall with optimised marketing tools available for salons to increase their visibility on third-party search engines like Google, creating a remarkable online presence.

As a growing number of modern salon bookings are taking place online, Osman commented that it’s still worthwhile making manual bookings a pleasurable process as they still persist despite being in the midst of the digital era: “The beauty industry hasn’t quite reached the scale of food delivery services, where the majority of orders are processed by companies like Uber Eats or Deliveroo. However, booking solutions for the beauty sector are evolving daily, and our free-to-use platform aims to provide a free fully-integrated solution with easy user interference.” Ultimately, when free services are on offer to increase your salon’s bookings, it’s a no-brainer and you should utilise the tools on offer.

Beyond the direct revenue benefits, technology presents many more advantages. Osman explained the other benefits Superbooking presents to a modern salon business, including automated marketing tools and harnessing the power of Artificial Intelligence, such as customer followups. The platform learns and mimics a salon’s communication style with customers, ensuring personalised, revenue-generating interactions. This tailored feature ensures the all-important personal touch remains as technology takes over. What’s more, the platform takes care of other salon operations, such as accounting and payment processing. Osman emphasised the importance of utilising the innovative tools on offer to take your business to the next

level, he said: “In essence, technology should assist in every aspect of salon management, leaving professionals to focus on what they do best— providing top-notch services.”

Technology has been a gamechanger for generating revenue beyond regular hours for Samantha Cusick, Owner of Samantha Cusick London. By harnessing the various technological tools and strategies available, Samantha has extended her services, engaged more with clients and offered them convenience even when the salon doors are closed. One of the most impactful ways that technology has contributed to revenue generation is through her online booking system, with over 80% of their salon’s bookings being made online.

Salon Lookbook is an innovative search engine that connects hair and beauty professionals with clients, they are just one of the many platforms emerging to help salon businesses flourish. We asked the Salon Lookbook team if most bookings take place manually or via a booking platform, to which they replied: “Just as they book hotels, flights, and restaurants on their phones, clients expect the same convenience for hair and beauty appointments. Salons

without online booking options may miss out on attracting new clients.” As clients continue to choose the convenience of booking appointments via their smartphones, salons are introduced to new clients as their online visibility grows. This also means, more than ever, you have to stand out from competition to maintain a loyal client base.

Samantha has leveraged technology to set up an e-commerce platform where her clients can purchase haircare products from the salon: “This allows us to generate sales even when the physical salon is closed. Our online store complements the in-salon experience and ensures our clients have access to premium products at all times” Samantha said.

Samantha explained how their online shop contributes a steady revenue

stream for clients who appreciate the convenience of purchasing their favourite products, while supporting a small business: “Notably, promotions lead to significant revenue spikes. For instance, during the recent celebration of our Fitzrovia salon’s 2nd birthday, a discount on OLAPLEX products generated £2,074 in just two days, highlighting the impact of such campaigns on our revenue.”

Elth creates a digital shop for salon businesses, Co-Founder, Samantha Freedman, agrees that the salon industry is experiencing a digital revolution in which Elth works in line with: “Our platform seamlessly combines the traditional salon experience with cuttingedge digital tools, aligning perfectly with the changing landscape.”

Elth is just one of the platforms available to empower hair and beauty

professionals to embrace technology, in their case offering a simple way to establish personalised online shops.

Samantha Freedman advised salon businesses to make use of technology to remain prevalent: “This fusion of physical and digital ensures salons remain relevant and accessible in an era where convenience and connectivity are paramount.”

Opening an online shop for your salon is a lucrative avenue for boosting revenue. There are numerous platforms emerging which make the set up process simple, enabling you to create a new stream of income for your business.

Social media continues to be one of the, if not the most, important marketing tool for salon businesses. Potential clients visit a salon’s social media account to see the work, popularity, get to know the team and to see the space they will have their treatment in. Samantha emphasised the importance of their online presence to engage with clients outside of business hours: “We share tutorials, styling tips, and behindthe-scenes glimpses, fostering a strong online community. This engagement keeps us front-of-mind, leading to increased bookings and revenue.”

Understanding the value of maintaining 24 hour engagement on social media, Samantha uses an app to strategically schedule her content. By doing this, her salon ensures consistent presence and interaction. Whilst scheduling apps are a great way to remain on top of social media, Samantha also explained the significance of posting organically: “We also maintain flexibility to adapt to real-time social media trends, which allows us to maximise reach and engagement by capturing the most relevant and timely conversations.”

Email marketing campaigns are another way to maintain your presence after hours. Samantha uses implemented automated campaigns to promote their services and highlight special offers

This fusion of the physical and digital ensures salons remain relevant and accessible in an era where convenience and connectivity are paramount.

Renovate your retail

Amidst a busy salon environment, your retail section can often be neglected. However, this opportunity to increase revenue and enhance your salon’s reputation shouldn’t be missed. In this Essential 5, we detail five ways you can elevate your retailing section.

Seasonal products

Use the changing seasons to update your layout and focus, this will help encourage your regular clients to notice products they might have previously overlooked. Some products will be more popular in different seasons, for example skincare with SPF will be in higher demand throughout the warmer months, in line with this, move the season’s favourites to the front of the retailing section and make an effort to market these trending products to your clients.

Engaging marketing

Salon social media marketing is filled with transformation images and treatment results, which means shouting about your retailing section is often disregarded. There are numerous ways to get creative with the marketing for your retailing section. Get your staff involved, let them choose their ‘Hero Product’ and talk about why they love this product and the results they’ve achieved with it. Link the posts to your online shop to generate sales outside the salon!

Tailored product recommendations

Make sure you and your team are knowledgeable about the retailing section so that they can provide tailored recommendations to your clients. This sense of personalisation will help push sales as your clients will be presented with products that directly target the results they’re after. If you recommend products perfectly suited to their aims, the client will likely purchase them time and time again.

Update the space

Take time to present your retailing in an inviting manner to help push sales. Creating a visually pleasing retail space can help increase sales by making the products easy to browse. You can apply labels and information marketing the products with USPs and usage instructions.

Brand partnerships

Carefully select brands that work in line with your salon’s ethos so that the products are suited to your target audience. For example, if your salon is renowned for its signature blonde balayage, feature brands that help maintain bright blondes from home. You’ll also be able to use your retailing section throughout your treatments by doing this and clients will see the results and be inspired to purchase to achieve the salon finish from home. Ultimately, using products that align with your salon’s personality will ensure continuity in branding and enhance your reputation.

Colour Profit Potential

Five years of research, involving thousands of stylists using Vish to mix their formulas has steered a complete update of the ground-breaking technology. This October, an all-new Vish, rich with enhanced features, but still super easy to use, will go live on both the iTunes and Google Play stores.

Vish launched on the iOS platform in April 2018, sparking a radical new approach to salon colour management. Built with the stylist and business owner in mind, it filled a vital gap in salon management, allowing

real-time oversight of services delivered – and their level of profitability – for the first time. In 2022, Vish enabled salons to capture nearly £2 million in additional revenue that was previously unseen and missed.

“Working closely with stylists who have

of Vish.

used Vish to mix millions of formulas since 2018, we’ve updated our system to include a new, streamlined look, making it easier than ever to mix quickly and effectively track every service,” said Tom Bentley-Taylor, Managing Director

TECHNOLOGY OF THE MONTH
thesalonmagazine.co.uk @thesalonmaguk Salon Magazine 36

As part of the release, stylists can now utilise the new Plan Ahead™ feature, allowing log in on their mobile and to look ahead at their day’s appointments, saving formulas while they have focused time or during the consultation. “The Plan Ahead™ feature gives so much flexibility to the stylist,” explained Tom, “stylists save the formula at their leisure and so can feel confident that if they ask their assistant to mix, it’s already loaded precisely as they prescribed.”

The Vish Colour Bar update is now compatible on all devices, offering salons flexibility in how the team wants to work and how the owner plans to design their colour bar.

“We listened to our users. The Vish they know and love still exists, but it is even more focused on making their day-to-day experience seamless and efficient,” said Tom.

Since 2018, Vish has grown exponentially, and the new version of the

system promises to propel salons even further towards their goals and support the industry. It will continue helping stylists stamp out over-dispensing while taking all the hassle out of manual record-keeping.

“The origins of Vish lie in our vision to completely eliminate colour waste, and this new update is going to open up a lot of new opportunities for our clients and the greater industry,” added Tom. “In the past five years, we’ve been able to help salons make a huge impact on their profitability; this new version will allow us to release new features at rapid-fire to continue to grow our industry.”

The average salon could increase its profitability by £10,564 per year if waste was eliminated.

Further enhancements are in the pipeline, due for release towards the end of 2023 and the first quarter of 2024. Meanwhile, stylists and salons will reap the benefits of a quicker, cleaner, and more responsive technology that puts all the control in their hands.

Set benchmarks in your salon and set your business up for success with this global salon data from the Vish Community.

Your Laser Labyrinth Guide

As the beauty industry continues to evolve, laser hair removal has emerged as one of the fastest growing treatments on the market. Skyncare delve into the top three concerns that you may have when considering laser hair removal machines.

1. Safety First: Concerns about Client Safety and Machine Reliability

Concern: One of the most significant concerns beauty salon owners face is the safety of their clients. Laser technology can be intimidating for clients who are unfamiliar with the process. Salon owners we spoke to worry about potential adverse effects or unexpected reactions. Additionally, the reliability of the machine is a common worry – will it consistently deliver safe and effective results?

Response: Safety is paramount and Skyncare devices are designed with client well-being in mind. Look for medical grade, MHRA registered machines with built-in safety mechanisms, such as cooling systems to minimize discomfort and reduce the risk of burns. Skyncare also encourage you to seek reviews from peers who’ve already incorporated laser technology into their salons so they can provide reassurance about the machine’s reliability and safety standards.

2. Budget Blues: Concerns about Initial Investment and Return on Investment (ROI)

Concern: The financial aspect is a common concern for any business investment. Salon owners may worry about the initial cost of purchasing laser hair removal machines and whether the investment will yield a satisfactory ROI.

Response: While the initial investment is a consideration, it’s essential to view it as a strategic move for clinic growth. Laser treatments have gained immense popularity, and clients are willing to pay

a premium for quality. Calculating the potential ROI by factoring in treatment prices, client demand, and number of sessions required gives you a clearer picture of profitability.

3. Skill Set Struggle: Concerns about Technician Training and Expertise

Concern: Incorporating laser technology means ensuring your salon staff are wellversed in operating the equipment and performing the treatments effectively. Salon owners might worry about the time and resources required to train their technicians adequately.

Response: Skyncare Training is an essential part of the equation. Reputable manufacturers should provide comprehensive training as part of the package. This training not only covers machine operation but also delves into

treatment protocols, client consultation and safety measures. Skyncare provide the Core of Knowledge Laser Safety Course, Full Level 4 Product Training both Theory and Practical and Laser Protection Advisor Support in every training package so you can start offering highly profitable treatments from day one post training.

While concerns about safety, budget, and skill set are valid, they need not be barriers to progress. Skyncare and established industry professionals understand these concerns and have tailored our offerings to mitigate them. By choosing the right laser hair removal machine, you’re not just investing in a technology – you’re investing in the future success of your salon.

Technology Takeover

Salon Tracker is one of the leading software systems for Hair, Beauty, Nail and Tanning salons across the UK and Ireland, in this exclusive editorial we find out all about their international expansion.

Salon Tracker came about in 2008 under the original name of Studio Tracker. A few years later in 2014, we rebranded to Salon Tracker with a brand-new look and lots of new features. The idea for our product came about when a group of our developers noticed a gap in the market for booking software systems geared towards tanning salons.

Our in-house developers are constantly working on improving and adding to the system to help customers run their salon in the easiest, most

efficient way possible. One thing we find works really well when it comes to developing the system is working side by side with our current customer base. We regularly take our current customers’ suggestions on how we could improve the system and try to figure out a way for this to be integrated into the software. One part of the system that we have spent a lot of time working on and adding to is our online features. These features are becoming increasingly popular with our customers due to the fact that they make the day-to-day

PROMOTION
thesalonmagazine.co.uk @thesalonmaguk Salon Magazine 48

process of running a busy salon that little bit easier.

With that being said, here are some of our online features and how they can be used to help our customers run their salons.

Online Booking

Online booking was one of the first online features we added into the system here at Salon Tracker and it still proves to be one of the most popular. With our online booking feature, salons get their own personalised website which allows their customers to log in using their email address and a 4-digit PIN and make bookings at any time. Currently, 36% of our clients’ online bookings are made outside of their salons opening hours. This means that a salon could be missing out on a large number of bookings, and therefore end sales, just by not offering this one thing.

Online Payments

A more recent feature that we have added on to our online system is online payments. This allows salons to give their customers the option to buy services and pay deposits for their bookings online. By giving the salons the option to take deposits when their customers

are booking online, this decreases the number of no-show bookings that are made online as customers are a lot more likely to show up for their appointment if they have partially paid for it. Salon Tracker also gives salons the option to take full payment for services online using Stripe. This means that even when the salon is closed, they could still be making a profit! By giving their customers the option to pay for services online, this will also cut down on wait times in the salon.

Siteview

Another one of our popular online features is siteview, otherwise known as home view. This gives salon owners and their employees the ability to view certain aspects of their Salon Tracker from home using either a laptop, pc or even through an app on their phone. Salon owners can view all of their reports from anywhere they would like using siteview meaning they can keep up to date on what is going on in their salon no matter where they are in the world. This feature also allows salon employees to view their calendars from their phone or home laptops. This means they will be able to see their upcoming bookings before they get into the salon and will be

able to see if they have any gaps in their schedule to fit last minute appointments in. Being able to see all this from home just gives both the salon owner and the employees some peace of mind when they’re away from the salon.

Online Backup

A seemingly small, but very useful online feature that we offer is online backups. We know that making sure your customer data being backed up safely and securely is important when it comes to running a salon. As well as local backups to the PC, we offer the ability to back up your data to the cloud. This means that customer data, booking history and your reports are all safely stored in the cloud so if anything happens to your PC, we can just download your Salon Tracker onto another one!

Multisite

For salon owners who own multiple salons, we also have a multisite feature. This feature lets you share your customer and service information in your different sites over your online account. This means that customers can visit all of your salons for their treatment and from a business point of view you will be able to see what is going in in all your salons from one HQ computer.

We offer a free demonstration and two-week trial of the software so if you would like to get booked in to take a closer look at these features, please give us a call on 01133508230 or email us on info@salontracker.co.uk www.salontracker.co.uk

Innovative Salon Technology

Introducing EMSCULPT, a new approach to body shaping. This non-invasive treatment suits male and female clients and addresses both muscle and fat. In this exclusive editorial, we find out more about EMSCULPT and the opportunities it presents to a salon business and its clients.

What clients can I offer this treatment to?

Clients that:

• Spend long hours at the gym trying to tighten and tone their muscles without any desirable effect.

• Aren’t suitable for other body shaping solutions.

• Are looking for a non-invasive improvement of their buttocks.

What are the benefits of EMSCULPT?

• It builds and strengthens muscles and burns your client’s belly fat without the time-consuming struggle of exercise.

• It is the world’s only non-invasive procedure to efficiently lift, fill and firm your buttocks.

• It can improve strength, muscle tone and firmness in the arms and calves.

• It is a comfortable non-invasive procedure with no recovery time, no anaesthesia and no needles are required.

• Depending on the treated area, the standard procedure is just four 20 or 30 minute treatments over a twoweek period.

• Your client may begin to feel improvement right after the treatment, and it may even continue improving for several weeks following the treatments.

How does the treatment work?

EMSCULPT creates a unique electromagnetic field that penetrates the skin to impact muscle tissue as well as belly fat. The energy induces almost 20,000 supramaximal muscle contractions per session, something that can’t be achieved at the gym. All this happens while your client relaxes on your treatment bed.

What makes EMSCULPT stand out from other procedures on the market?

EMSCULPT is the only procedure in the world that not only targets fat, but also simultaneously builds muscles. All the other technologies only treat fat. For the best results your clients need to have their

fat reduced as well as their underlying muscles strengthened.

EMSCULPT is not based on a heating/ cooling principle, so there are no risks of burns, scarring or swelling.

Furthermore, no other technology on the market can give you a non-invasive buttock lift. Through strengthening of all your gluteal muscles, EMSCULPT established a completely new category of treatments - a noninvasive butt lift.

Is the treatment safe?

The new EMSCULPT is FDA cleared, medical CE-marked, and represents the first innovative technology that has shown in multiple studies to treat both muscle and fat.

Is the treatment painful?

That is the best thing about the EMSCULPT. Patients say it is completely painless, the procedure feels like an

intensive workout. Your client can lay down and relax during the treatment.

EMSCULPT. After the procedure it feels like you had an amazing workout, and you can get back to work immediately following the procedure.

When can clients expect to see results?

This may vary depending on their age,

Testimonial from James

“Just 20 minutes in four sessions made a bigger difference on my calves than the last few years of trying to get them stronger and firmer, I didn’t believe it, but now I know, that anything is possible with the EMSCULPT.”

physical condition, BMI and many other aspects. In general patients begin to feel tangible results right after the treatment. Positive results are usually reported two to four weeks after the last session and continue to improve for several weeks following the treatments.

How long do the results last and do clients need to repeat the procedure regularly?

Nothing in life lasts forever, but the clinical studies show that majority of patients are still better in both muscle and fat even a year after their treatment series. However we recommend clients to book another consultation few months after their treatments to see if they may benefit from any additional treatments. Keeping a healthy lifestyle is the key to maintain their results in long-term.

With 1000s of active Million Dollar platinum technicians across the globe providing their clients with individual treatment and homecare plans, the Million Dollar Facial system’s rapid growth has flourished from the combination of science backed treatments and skincare proven by real results from real people.

Ultra Million Machine

As a consumer, the demand for non-invasive methods of skin tightening, brightening, contouring, body sculpting

and cellulite reduction is continuously growing within aesthetic clinics and salons.

The unique Million Dollar protocols will allow your salon to include radio frequency and cavitation for treating fine lines and wrinkles, diminishing pore size, lifting, and firming to contour the face, eyes and body. Cavitation works on the thighs, buttocks, abdomen, and arms to target cellulite, and stubborn fat cells. Combining Million Dollar professional products and Medi+ homecare, tailored to suit the client’s needs, allowing you to create immediate and visible results across the board.

Ultra Million Radio-frequency treatment uses electrical pulse which heats the dermis through hand pieces without damaging the epidermis to help stimulate new collagen growth and provide an improvement in skin laxity and appearance, to remodel and enhance the dermal density.

Ultra Million Cavitation naturally destroys unwanted fat cells and reshapes the body. Cavitation energy sound waves are delivered to precise localised areas, this pressure around them causes them to liquefy then leave the body through the natural metabolic process. The body naturally metabolises the liquefied fat and toxins releasing them over the next 24 to 72 hours.

On average the clients lose approximately one to two inches in one half an hour session, rest assured this process is safe, painless and noninvasive, with no down time, and long-lasting results.

What’s new?

Million Dollar Facial system is bringing out new products in order to continuously improve the skincare market and follow new trends. In order to do this, Jenna is constantly testing out new ingredients that will benefit the skincare market. The new treatments include the Oxy-Pro, with incredibly high popularity predictions.

The training provided is redesigned regularly to keep up-to-date with legislations and changes in any techniques and to ensure that the training is to the highest standards possible.

Oxy-pro

Million Dollar Facial System’s latest treatment is their expertly crafted, professional oxygenating mask, inspired by the effect of exercise to transform the body and mind.

The treatment invites the benefits of skin fitness to their revolutionary system. The Oxy-pro treatment combines science and indulgence to combat a wide range of complaints.

This treatment uses science in partnership with ancient yoga philosophy, working with ingredients that have been passed down through generations. Creating a 45 minute treatment of non-strenuous facial yoga.

Yoga encourages boosted circulation which brings more oxygen to your client’s cells, it can reduce stress and inflammation and leads to a more restful sleep; resulting in radiant skin.

Increasing oxygen within the skin can create a diverse treatment that can combat:

• Acne, killing the prebiotic acne bacteria.

• Sensitivity, healing and reducing inflammation.

• Ageing, increasing oxygen can hydrate reducing ageing and improving fine lines and wrinkles.

The mask itself is a reactive gel mask that the therapist would apply to the client for ten minutes and then every few minutes to activate it again by massaging.

The key ingredient is the Chinese privet seed that is sourced from the cloud forest of Sichuan with high moisture and oxygen content.

• Minimising crow’s feet up to 68%.

• Skin appears healthier and more radiant.

• Improving the roughness of the skin up to 32%.

It also contains fruit enzymes: carica papaya and mangos enzyme pumpango, which is rich in vitamins and minerals, both helping to gently exfoliate and stimulate cell renewal.

They have incorporated a yoga massage into this treatment that you can follow to elevate the client experience.

Breaking Bad Habits

With help from industry experts, we look at how to guide your clients with the right retailing products and routine to take care of their hair at home.

As the expert your clients will appreciate your advice on your salon’s retailing products that will ensure the result you’ve created lasts. By tailoring a retail home routine, you will not only enhance the relationship with the client but you will also increase sales and the likelihood of rebooking with you, especially if the products your recommend work wonders on their hair’s health.

It’s beneficial for your salon team to have a routine and guide in place to recommend the right products for at-home haircare routines. With the boom of the wellness sector after the

pandemic, clients, more than ever, are open to the idea of spending money on their appearance and wellness. The added on service of recommending products will elevate your reputation by showcasing your expertise. To motivate staff to focus on this final part of the salon experience, you could design an

incentive where stylists get a free goodie bag or half day off if they sell the most retail products that week.

Jonathan Andrew, Fudge Professional Global Ambassador, told us that his team are specially trained in consultations and product knowledge: “We will spend quality time talking through the best

HAIRCARE
thesalonmagazine.co.uk @thesalonmaguk Salon Magazine 58
A good regime at home will determine to a point if we can manage client expectations.

products for our clients at-home care and styling needs.”

For Peter Mellon, Owner of Medusa Salon, education is key to ensure that his salon staff know how to approach recommendations for their client’s athome haircare routine: “At Medusa we invest heavily in training for technical skills but also for retail. I think it’s important not to overwhelm the client with a huge list of products and a complicated regime. People are busy, but they want to look great, so start small and build as you go.”

Tailoring the haircare regime you recommend will not only elevate the experience for the client but will also help their in-salon results flourish, leaving a lasting impression. Andrea Dorata, L’Oreal Professioannel Artist and Owner of Dorata Hairdressing, suggests asking open-ended questions to understand the client’s current routine and concerns, easing the pressure when promoting your retail products.

“We educate our clients about why they need a specific product and how to use it without making the client feel preached at, the emphasis is on providing solutions to problems not forcing a sale,” Andrea added.

Offering a hands-on experience gets the client involved and at Scullion & Scot, Owner Gemma Scullion, explained how this helps to release the pressure on the client: “Never push retail onto people, always advise and leave them to make the choice.”

Adele Clark, OSMO Ambassador and Owner of Spectrum Hair, is a Good Salon Guide Colour Expert and therefore prides herself on hair health and protection. For her, a thorough consultation best identifies the requirements for each individual client and targets their aims for their homecare plan in a professional way, but she also praises the OSMO range that her salon retails for achieving the perfect home routine: “This alongside the generous sizes the OSMO products come in and the success in outcome for our clients has us coming back to the range every time. The clients find them easy to use, great value for money and it is a great talking point in the salons.”

Developing the perfect homecare routine takes time, as it is tailored specifically for each client, so, we asked the experts if at-home routines actually

benefit the results of clients’ salon treatments, making the process even more worthwhile.

Medusa Salon’s Peter explained the huge benefit homecare routines have on the capability of future appointments: “A good regime at-home will determine to a point if we can manage client expectations. If the hair is healthy and well cared for, we are more than likely to be open to drastic changes or highmaintenance colour services.”

L’Oreal Professionnel’s, Andrea agrees, stating that recommending a hair care routine is essential for salons, especially with colour services in the modern hairdressing climate becoming more

extreme than ever before.

“Colour clients in particular should see the retail products as an essential part of their hair service. Some results can simply not be replicated at home without the use of the correct products,” Andrea said.

If a client has spent time and money on their salon result, it’s important to encourage professional products at home to achieve the best look and lengthen the salon result.

When recommending retail products to your clients, it’s important to gauge whether they appreciate this addition to their service. Each client’s preference is different, but if you make sure your approach doesn’t sound like a sales pitch, it’s hard not to appreciate some expert advice.

Peter told us his clients always appreciate the recommendations: “In this day and age, hair is a luxury and when people are spending hours in the salon and hundreds on their hair, they know it’s important to continue the investment at home.”

Your knowledge means you can recommend products that are specifically

HAIRCARE
Salon Magazine @thesalonmaguk thesalonmagazine.co.uk 59
The emphasis is on providing solutions to problems not forcing a sale.

targeted to the individual’s hair type, with the right usage instructions. Andrea explained how clients appreciate the recommendations as they feel like their money has been well spent: “Clients often have a bathroom cabinet full of impulse purchases that they’ve used a couple of times which don’t actually work for their hair. When we recommend products it’s based on their hair types and needs at that time. Salon professional products can be more expensive, but we show them the amount to use which is often much smaller than they think, and how to use them properly.”

As well as home care routines being vital for colour clients to get the most out of their appointment, Scullion & Scot’s Gemma also emphasised how curlyhaired clients in particular will appreciate you sharing your expertise: “I find with curly clients they struggle to get the most out of their natural hair but are desperate to embrace it. It’s important to guide them to the products that help them to embrace their hair texture.”

At Spectrum Hair, to help salon stylists remember the importance of retailing,

Adele uses an analogy,:“If you don’t follow the washing instructions on your new dress, you could ruin it with one wrong wash. This can be the same for hair.”

Recommended homecare products aren’t just a sales push, they really are an essential to ensure hair is looking its best and the colour is staying fresher for longer, it is also a great opportunity to elevate the overall experience. Peter explained how a lot of people feel that talking about products is pushy and uncomfortable but this shouldn’t be the case: “If you are a reputable salon using high-end luxury products, that could be a huge reason a client has come to you. They want to be educated, it is a huge part of customer service and a requirement for a five star salon experience.”

Rebecca Thwaites, Senior Artistic Director at Q Hair and Beauty, added that by approaching retailing recommendations by using the four rights technique: right place, right technique, right Price and right product, without doubt delivers an elevated experience: “Sharing that knowledge creates more loyalty and trust. At Q Hair and Beauty our focus is on personalisation.”

You want your clients to have the ultimate salon experience and by focusing on tailored home hair care routines they’ll also have that same feeling at home. By recommending the correct products your client will reach their hair goals and thank your salon for this result, it also means their hair is in the best health for any of their desires in the salon on their next visit.

A Clean Canvas

The OLAPLEX Broad Spectrum

Chelating Treatment is a professionalstrength, high-potency chelator that cleans deep down to the cortex without stripping hair of its moisture and essential proteins. It removes a wide range of heavy metals, minerals, chlorine, pollution, and discolouring copper and calcium deposits to create a clean canvas for optimal results from all chemical services.

Repair and Rebuild

The OLAPLEX No1 Bond Multiplier is the first step of the two part Professional System, use this product as an additive to your chemical processes or as the first step of the OLAPLEX Stand-Alone Treatment. Powered by patented OLAPLEX Bond Building Technology, this highly concentrated two step insalon treatment rebuilds disulfide bonds and mitigates damage for stronger, shinier, healthier-looking hair.

Ultimate Reconstruction

To complete this two part Professional System, use the OLAPLEX No2 Bond Perfector. The second step is necessary and should not be skipped as it repairs any bonds that may have been missed during the chemical services. It can also be used alone as a mini treatment or as the second step of the OLAPLEX StandAlone Treatment.

Intense Moisture

Powered by patented OLAPLEX Bond Building Technology, the 4-in-1 Moisture Mask, is a highly concentrated reparative mask that adds intense moisture while providing shine and body. The mask is formulated with strengthening ceramides, oils and amino acids. Apply one to three pumps to clean, damp hair and leave on for ten minutes. Time is of the essence in a busy salon and this 4-in-1 Moisture Mask works quickly and efficiently to address dryness in even the most severe cases.

The Science of Hair Damage

When chemical, heat, mechanical, environmental or pollution damage occur, disulfide bonds break causing split ends, dryness, and breakage that can affect the entire hair fibre.

How Hair Bonds Work

Hair is made up of proteins, amino acids, and molecular bonds. Among these bonds, it’s the disulfide bonds that give hair its strength and structure. When they’re damaged, the hair is damaged.

The Main Bonds

Hydrogen Bond

Hydrogen bonds are physical bonds that are easily broken and reformed by water, either through cleansing or humidity, and by heat. They are responsible for the shape of the hair.

They are easily broken and reformed by water and heat and account for up to a third of hair’s strength and half of it’s elasticity.

Ionic Bond

Ionic (salt) bonds are also physical bonds

and are considered the weakest. Strong acidic or alkaline solutions break salt bonds because they are affected by changes in the pH. They are broken and reformed by a pH below 4.5 and above 5.5 and they account for about 1/3 of the hair’s strength.

Disulfide Bond

Disulfide bonds differ from hydrogen and salt bonds. They are chemical, covalent bonds and are the strongest. They stabilise protein chains that contribute to overall hair strength and elasticity. They are permanent bonds and cannot be broken by water. All hair contains millions of disulfide bonds. They are present in the cuticle, cortex, and medulla and account for about a third of the hair’s strength.

Post-Summer Haircare 101

As summer comes to a close, a post-summer haircare regime needs to be considered to suit the cooler seasons. With this in mind, industry superstar Neil Moodie has provided some helpful tips, hacks and product recommendations to best care for your client’s hair.

Autumn can come with all sorts of unwanted hair issues, including dry and dull hair, sensitive scalp and extra frizz. Here are my top hair care tips to keep your client’s hair looking good throughout the cooler months.

Trim Time

Start the new season off with a fresh cut. Summer sun can take its toll on hair and ends are left feeling super dry, frazzled and brittle after being exposed to harsh sunlight, UV rays, chlorine and swimming.

Moisture Moments

Recharge sundried hair with extra moisture and a rejuvenating boost. Recommend a nourishing, rich conditioner and mask treatment to restore their hair.

I also recommend a treatment mask once a week, introduce an in-salon steam treatment, which should be booked in for every visit for that extra boost of moisture and an intense conditioning.

Battle the Frizz

Other than hydration, your next best option to fight frizz is good quality styling products, formulated specifically for the job. Sam Mcknight’s Happy Endings Cream is a great lightweight hair moisturiser that will also give your hair a great luxurious look. As I always recommend all year round, a silk pillow is great for reducing static and causing less friction damage.

The Scalp

The lack of moisture in the cooler months, means the scalp produces less sebum, which can result in an itchy, irritated and dry scalp.

Offer scalp treatments and retail a scalp brush as they work together to cleanse, hydrate and repair a dry, itchy and flaky scalp.

Autumn Hair Loss

Approximately 10% of our hair may be in a resting phase, known as telogen, at which point the hair falls out, although it doesn’t fall out as soon as it enters the resting phase. It takes approximately three months to leave the follicle.

Studies show that we experience slightly higher rates of telogen during the summer months of July and early August and then see the affected hairs falling out of the follicles around three months later, around mid-October to November,

also known as “autumn shed”.

To support hair growth, suggest starting a regular regime of caring for client’s hair ahead of winter months. Recommend taking vitamins, to support their hair growth from within. Also ensure they continue taking enough fibre through fruits and vegetables – as well as protein, necessary for their scalp to grow healthy hair. Develop a scalp care routine that focuses on the blood flow to their scalp to support their hair follicles to help start re-growing hair that’s falling out. Lastly, if they feel the amount of hair they are losing is significant, recommend a blood test to identify any specific deficiencies.

Curls on the Rise

The curly hair community is a significant and growing segment of the hair care market as approximately 35% of the global population have varying degrees of curly or wavy hair.

Salon of the Month

Gielly Green, Marylebone, London

Since opening in 2008 as a boutique salon, Gielly Green has always placed a large emphasis on customer service. CEO and Founder, Shai Greenberg, explained how they pride themselves on their philosophy that upholds uncompromising old-school standard and service, placing the client at the heart of their salon operations.

“Our standards have remained fiercely guarded and maintained by the team, establishing Gielly Green’s reputation with our clients to deliver an exclusive, high-end service, which is regarded as second-to-none within the industry,” Shai said.

To fit the Gielly Green mould and meet their high standards, Shai explained that their salon hand-picks stylists from across the globe for the unique treatments they can deliver and professional skills they possess, all talented with years of salon experience.

Collectively, the salon team reflects London’s multi-cultural society, which gives them the ability to work on all ethnic hair types from across the globe, a quality that Shai explained has helped them stand out in a competitive market: “The team embody the GG philosophy and are at the heart of the salon. The distinctive and diverse artists we house at Gielly Green has helped us become London’s leading salon.”

Shai told us how, at Gielly Green, they recognise that the salon experience is designed, not only to satisfy basic grooming needs, but also to improve one’s overall wellbeing and increase the feeling of self-belief: “From the moment clients arrive at the smart townhouse door, they are treated to a bespoke experience reminiscent of the standards found in a private members club.”

The salon creates a sense of exclusivity that draws clients in and sets the salon apart by being dubbed as ‘London’s best kept secret’.

Instagram marketing is now pivotal for a salon business, to grow its client base and elevate their brand image, for Gielly Green their goal is to build trust and loyalty amongst their followers through their social presence. To foster this sense of salon allegiance, they have been producing relevant and useful information with constant updates.

The team also use their Instagram account to showcase their salon team and help potential salon clients identify a particular stylist. To increase visibility and engagement the Gielly Green

team also encourage clients to share their hair images and salon experience to be featured on their page.

The interior is a huge contributing factor to the overall salon experience, and Gielly Green recognise this. Their design aim is to create a sensory experience for their clients, using scent and touch harmoniously together. Their highly eccentric and timeless design, combines aspects of a welcoming home, with elements that mimic a luxury hotel suite and tranquil spa to appeal to the individual rather than the corporate audience.

Shai explained how they have created intimate areas in the salon, displaying a tasteful variety of materials, colours and lighting: “Different areas of the salon are partitioned to replicate the feeling of moving through the rooms of a town house, without the use of walls or doors.”

To achieve the warm atmosphere, they have used a variety of colours and textures. Indulgent soft creams compliment chocolate hues and are blended with a decadent touch of purple to result in a chic environment. To finish the overall look, their stone flooring gives the sense of a boutique hotel and absorbs sound and heat.

The salon has made use of the latest developments in salon technology whilst stylishly avoiding an intimidating and sterile lab environment, Shai added: “The superior, fully reclining backwash chairs are the most comfortable and luxurious available, but the organic shape and warm colour keep them homely and inviting. Computers are discretely hidden around the salon, so that stylists can check clients’ records without crowding the reception.”

The salon is a flourishing business to take inspiration from, looking back to their origins as a Boutique Salon with a team of just twelve, the salon has since evolved to be the leading salon in London, with an attentive and talented team now approaching 95 people.

In the last year, the salon continued to grow from strength to strength, with an extension providing an additional floor as well as an expanded service list.

When asked what her goals for the future are, the proud salon CEO replied: “We want to maintain our name as a leading salon in the industry and plan to take the brand international, we are also looking to expend into the retail education market.”

‘Conditioner washing’ or co-wash is when you apply a conditioner in between the times you clarify. Trepadora’s Hibiscus Pink Cleansing Clay-Wash is a perfect alternative to co-washing. It’s non-foaming, creamy texture mirrors that of a conditioner but the French pink clay in this product elevates the co-washing experience into a more superior clay wash.

Finger Coiling

This styling method smoothes and wraps sections of hair around the finger to create more uniform curls. Applying a little pump of Papaya Slip Taming Potion to your fingers as you wrap the sections of hair will create a stronger hold and smoother finish.

Frizz

Frizz occurs when hair swells due to excess moisture intake from the atmosphere. It raises the hair cuticles which in turn affects your curls’ shape and definition. By following a good styling regimen and curl care routine your clients will minimise this common curl concern.

Curl Type

Hair typing classifies hair texture based on the curl pattern, density, width, and

porosity. In its simplest form: Wavy hair is type 2a, 2b and 2c. Curly hair is type 3a 3b and 3c. Coily hair is type 4a, 4b and 4c.

We have taken a more simplistic approach to hair/curl typing. Trepadora specifies curl type by Wavy, Curly, Tightly Spiralled and Coily. Our products work across all curl types effectively.

Humectant

This is an ingredient used to promote water retention in your curls by drawing moisture from the air. The result? Soft, bouncy curls that retain their shape and are less likely to break.

L.O.C Method

L.O.C, is an acronym that stands for Leave-In, Oil and Cream. It is a three-step method of applying products to curly hair in order to help the hair retain as much moisture as possible, for as long as possible, between washes.

Protein Treatments

Protein treatments replace the protein that may have been lost through manipulation, chemical processing or from ageing. Trepadora uses hydrolysed quinoa in our Quinoa Repair Deep Conditioner which forms a protective barrier around your curls providing powerful essential nutrients.

Quench The Thirst: Shampoo, Conditioner & Mask Set

This remarkable trio’s promise is in their name: designed to literally quench the thirst of dry hair and human hair extensions, the set focuses on restoring

moisture and hydration. The formula features rice proteins, aloe vera, fig, and a fresh and fruity delicate fragrance. The hair mask is also infused with precious avocado oil, added to the recipe to treat your client’s locks with its naturally deepconditioning properties.

This is why they will be introducing a whole new range, including the latest technology in the world of Remy human hair. Visit their panel P150 at Salon International to see with your own eyes their new collection, featuring:

Flat Weft

Your standard weft, now improved for an even more discreet, seamless and natural-looking finish. The secret to luscious, voluminous locks without all the fuss of bulky attachments, less shedding, and less tangling compared to the original lace wefts.

Flat Tips

The new flat tips provide a discreet and comfortable way to apply hair extensions using a heat connector. These gorgeous locks don’t need any maintenance for up to three months, giving your clients more freedom and less frequent appointments. Their flatter surface is easier to heat and mould around the hair!

Invisi Tapes

The latest innovation in tape in hair extensions, these tapes’ hair strands go all the way up to the tab, becoming the true champions of discretion. Lasting up to 8-10 weeks, these hair extensions are fairly quick to apply, they’re virtually undetectable and offer incredible flexibility and comfort to those who prefer to wear their hair down.

Remy Royale Tapes

Tape in hair extensions, but make it premium. Cliphair’s ever popular collection is getting the royal treatment, now becoming available in their doubledrawn range: same thickness from root to tip for a fuller, plumper finish, and carefully treated strands with unmatched shine and manageability. In short: the tape extensions you’ve been longing for, with improved durability and superior quality.

Nano Bonds

For those seeking a long-lasting solution, Cliphair’s new nano bond hair extensions offer a secure and discreet finish that will stand the test of time. Their silicone tip is more comfortable and flexible than the old-school metal nano tips, and moves even more naturally with the rest of your client’s natural hair, with improved sturdiness and less shedding.

Halloween

BOOst your bookings

Halloween is the perfect opportunity to rejuvenate your marketing strategy with creative ideas to capture your client’s attention and boost in-salon bookings, in line with this, we share five marketing ideas below.

Spooky salon décor

Decorate your space with Halloween themed décor that stays in line with your salon’s brand personality, if your salon is renowned for its gold logo, add small gold pumpkins to the reception desk. Go that extra mile and create a Halloween-themed wall to use as a backdrop to capture your transformation photos to share on social media. This will show your salon celebrates the changing festivities, as well as being able to use spooky hashtags to increase engagement and visibility.

Seasonal offers

Make the most of the occasion and launch irresistible offers for your clients. Perhaps £5 off any Halloween-themed nail art or 10% off red and orange colour treatments. If your salon uses SMS or email marketing, make use of the spooky season’s abundance of puns to catch your client’s attention. Attract clients with creative writing to promote your special offers, for example “try our waxing menu currently at a terrifyingly low price”.

Halloween service night

Host an evening in your salon purely for Halloween services, this is a great way to boost sales and stand out from other salons on the market. Create a carefully curated service menu available on this night only, or change your service menu with a spooky twist. Bake Halloween sweet treats for your clients and make sure to push all social media posts, try taking live videos, or having a special hashtag for clients to share stories and posts. This will all help towards elevating your salon’s online reputation.

Launch a competition

Host a competition for your clients to participate in, market this in your salon and on your social media platforms. For example, the best Halloween costume wins a free service. Make the rules clear and make sure that to enter clients have to interact and follow your social media pages. This is a great opportunity to increase your following and the visibility of your salon.

Collaborate with other businesses

Collaborating with businesses and other salons nearby is a great way to build your client base and build beneficial relationships with likeminded business owners. For example, if your salon only offers nail services and there is a nearby hair salon, you can collaborate and create a special Halloween package to offer a full transformation for your clients. Halloween presents endless opportunities for creative marketing, use the festivity to market your services and show your clients that your salon knows how to have fun.

The Joker remains a popular Halloween look but as different versions of the villain continue to be born, one thing remains constant: the signature acid green hair and creepy red grin. In this look the signature red grin is smudged and the green hair is seen in the brows. Using a smudged effect accompanied with lashes and gloss, has added a glamourous edge to the

look making it a more popular option amongst clients.

To create this look Danielle’s key focus was the Joker’s renowned colour palette: red, green, purple and black. Explaining her inspiration, Danielle said: “Neatness is not the goal here, like in your typical brown smokey eye. The Joker is a madman, and mad men, need mad makeup.”

Create an ombré, green, blocked brow. To do this I use two shades of green eyeshadow, placing the darkest on the outer half of the brows, then blending the lighter colour in the front half using a small angled brush.

Step one Step four

Time for the base. Although it is Halloween, we still want to incorporate elements of glam into this look. So, for that flawless base, I’ve used a full coverage foundation and concealer with a liquid contour on the highest points of the cheeks, temples and nose.

Using two shades of purple, blend the lightest across the crease and up towards the brow, creating a cat eye effect. Place the darker purple shade on the outer corner and close to the crease. To finish, add a liquid shimmer over the lid.

Step two Step five

Going back in with the two purple shades and a small, flat eye brush, I packed on the darkest shade both above and below the eye. Using my finger, I dragged through the product to create a smear effect and softly blended the edges with the lighter purple using circular motions on a blending brush. To enhance and darken the eyes even further, I took the black eyeliner in the inner corners of the eye.

Possibly the hardest step, winged eyeliner! For this, I picked up a black pot liner with an even smaller angled brush to achieve a sharper edge to the wing. To prevent the eye from looking too heavy, take the purple shades from step two and blend them on the lower lash line.

Step three Step six

On the opposite side I added some black graphics using a felt liner and most importantly, the infamous red smile. Using a red liquid lip, I used my fingers to create the extended smile which I darkened using a black eyeshadow in the opening and corners of the lips, topped with a clear gloss to tie in the shimmery eyes.

Turning Your Salon Spooky

Lurking just around the corner is Halloween and having grown in popularity in recent years your beauty business should take steps to join in on the fun and capitalise on the opportunities the celebration presents. With help from business-savvy salon owners, we explore how to expand your service list to include Halloween-themed treatments, whilst upholding high standards and staying on brand.

Clients come to a salon to update their look, boost their confidence and relax, so how can your salon strike the balance to be a haven of beauty that’s surrounded by ghoulish décor? The secret is understanding your target audience and therefore, there is no universal guide to celebrating Halloween in salons, as the celebration has to be tweaked to each business to suit their client base’s preference.

At F&M Hairdressing, Salon Owner, Lesley Farrall, explained how they celebrate spooky season by playing on the festivities and incorporating the occasion into hair: “We ask the client if they would like us to add faux spiders, white cobwebs or create a more whacky style. Our clients are always up for fun and we love to incorporate these additions into their looks.” These subtle additions make the client’s trip memorable and will increase the

Halloween is always filled with lots of colour and it’s a great way for me to show off my creativity.

likelihood of them sharing their salon look online with friends.

It’s hard to determine if Halloween will be in high demand amongst your client base, especially if you are a new salon. Brian Leo McCallum, Owner of ROAR Hair and Beauty, explained how in his salon demand is always high for Halloween services, but this is a lot to do with the personality and ethos of their salon all year round: “We are all about creative, unique colour looks and at Halloween these colour services are more popular than ever.” As a trusted colour salon, ROAR’s clients get excited to try the new Halloween-inspired services and treatments they have in store for a seasonal look.

Brian even caters for clients who opt for more natural colours to make sure the seasonal services appeal to all, increasing bookings as much as possible: “Clients can be tempted to add some funky colour to their look over Halloween with our temporary hair colour options that can add highlights and flashes of colour to their current hair shade. “

Safy B, Owner of Safy B’s Hair Salon, uses her Halloween services to inspire her more colourful clients who are looking to spice up their look for spooky season. She also uses the treatments to grow her client base by showcasing designs she doesn’t usually create which feature bright and daring colours.

“In previous years, I have created a variety of different looks for my clients from an autumn melt with vibrant reds, to pumpkin spice, which was a beautiful deep copper tone. Halloween is always filled with lots of colour and it’s a great way for me to show off my creativity. I post all the looks I create on my Instagram; this always brings more customers in looking for colourful styles,” Safy added.

Use the season to boost staff morale with fun incentives such as a fancy dress competition to win a half day or free lunch, then take behind-the-scenes content for your Instagram account. Content like this is popular as it adds a sense of authenticity to the platform, and breaks the norm of client photos and transformation videos.

At F&M Hairdressing they’re known for their fun costumes, highlighting the positive client response towards the fun, Lesley commented on how they go that step further and decorate their space:

“Our salon is all about the experience and this is something we pride ourselves on. We decorate the windows, the backwash and the retail areas.”

ROAR Hair and Beauty also celebrate with costumes and decorations, Brian explained the positive effect this has had on the salon atmosphere as a whole: “I like the salon to be fun and just because

my team are working, I don’t want them to miss out on dressing up. Doing the job, we do; we are a creative bunch and love dressing up. The clients love it too when they come in and the salon is decorated.” It’s worth noting that at ROAR, their branding colours are orange and black, which works in line perfectly with Halloween, make sure you

tweak your decorations and costumes to enhance your brand image and personality.

For example, Alex Thaddeus Hairdressing opt for a more simplistic décor to keep them on brand. Owner, Alex Thaddeus, told us about their yearly window display: “Our display involves beautiful pumpkins of all different colours and autumnal leaves on string falling down the window.”

Nail salons have the opportunity to really let their creative juices flow during Halloween, with lots of exciting imagery that is associated with the season offering your salon the perfect opportunity to showcase your skills in nail art with intricate Halloween-themed designs.

The abundance of nail looks you can create can lead you to run away with creative Halloween ideas, but remember your branding, if your salon is renowned for specialising in nudes, make sure your designs work in line with this to maintain continuity and stay in tune with your target audience.

For Salon System Nail Expert, Jaz Moger, Halloween is her favourite time of year and she expands her service list especially to include themed treatments. She advises nail artists with a minimalistic style to not shy away from the season

completely, and instead create designs that are still on-brand, this can mean a design with a tiny sparkly spider on one nail or devil horn shaped French tips.

Jaz strategically plans the posting of her themed nail looks to help increase bookings during times of peak interest: “I advertise the holiday by creating Halloween nail art on my own hands or client’s and capturing content for socials. I like to do this towards the end of September so that I have something ready to post at the start of October.”

To increase bookings you can offer a discount on nail sets with Halloweenthemed nail art. Utilise the occasion to enhance marketing your skills and build your portfolio to show future clients your intricacy to increase bookings.

Jaz suggests using the holiday to collaborate with other beauty

professionals to increase bookings: “If you’re not someone who offers nail services, then why not team up with someone who does. Contacting other local hair and beauty businesses to collaborate and do joint Halloween packages is fun and a great way to network whilst reaching a wider clientele.”

Ultimately, in a competitive industry, the changing seasons offer a great opportunity to intensify your salon’s marketing strategies and expand your service list with themed treatments to stand out. Decorating your salon space lifts the atmosphere and seasonal treatments can be advertised to increase your social media visibility by using relevant hashtags and phrases. Make sure your salon celebrates the season tastefully, to strike the balance correctly and stay on brand.

Oozing Glamour

In an exclusive editorial with The GelBottle, we discuss the initial vision for the brand, their biggest achievements and the inspiration behind their latest collection with CEO Daisy Kalnina, to follow we share a step by step to create a charming nail look.

Launched in 2015 by Founder and CEO Daisy Kalnina, The GelBottle Inc (lovingly known as TGB by many), came to life through a vision of blending art, colour, technical ability and pure passion for nails.

Daisy tells us all about her thriving brand loved by nail professionals in over 30 countries in her exclusive interview with Salon Magazine:

Where did your passion for nails begin and what was your initial vision for The GelBottle?

Like many professional nail technicians, my love of nails started in the spare room of my home, having gained experience managing my mother’s full-service salon since the age of 15. In 2012, I was reevaluating what I wanted to achieve in life and thought, I can take my greatest passion, art and put it on nails. I rented a small retail space in Brighton, but when selecting products for my salon, I couldn’t find a nail product that gave me the colours, pigments and quality I wanted. So, I decided to create my own line of professional gel polish, originally just for my clients. I did a lot of research,

worked with various chemists and we created a formula that set us apart from the rest and that’s when The GelBottle was born.

What has been the brand’s biggest achievement?

I am so incredibly proud of the community we’ve built at The GelBottle and its social following, which has given up-and-coming nail artists a platform to grow and become famous in their own right. I love that our platform has also become a vehicle for nurturing, growing and producing nail influencers.

What can we expect from The GelBottle’s A/W collection?

It’s all about Glamourati— a ten piece collection that celebrates the importance of texture and finishes with euphoric metallic hues. Picture vibrant, enigmatic and stand-out-from-the-crowd copper tones, mermaid blue nails and deep crimson tips that will set your world on fire.

We’ve included eye-catching lightup glitters, unique shades and two gel polishes inspired by bestselling BIAB™ colours, plus, we also have seven perfectly matched new Chrome Pigments to really up the ante on your nail designs.

Ignite is the collection’s hero colour, which is why I’ve chosen this look for the

Products used

Create This Style. I created this burnt orange to replicate stunning sunset hues and adding our new chrome pigment gives the look an extra fiery flare.

How have your years of experience in the industry contributed to the latest launch?

I’ve found that what helps us stand out is the constant observation and awareness of what people are engaging with. The colours for Glamourati work in line with this infectious interest at the moment with glamour, nightlife and metallic tones.

It was also really important to me that this collection felt inclusive, with something for everyone, so no matter where you are in the world, what you’re doing, or what your mood is, there’s a Glamourati colour to make you feel amazing.

Your Sugalane.

In a competitive industry, it’s vital that your salon stays up-to-speed with the latest trends and client demands. As consumers are seeking to create different looks at a lower cost, synthetic hair has taken the industry by storm. In this exclusive editorial, we explore the opportunity to enhance your salon’s offerings and attract a new client base with premium synthetic hair brand, Sugalane.

Having a remarkable transformation can take the salon experience to new heights for a client, and hair extensions offer this opportunity to create a dramatic difference. However, when working with human hair, it can be costly and unrealistic for a client’s budget. This is where Sugalane is your salon saviour!

Introducing Sugalane, here to revolutionise everything you thought you knew about synthetic hair. Expertly crafted by a team who have worked in the hair extension industry for fifteen years, Sugalane have striked the perfect balance between affordability and quality. Sugalane extensions offer a budget-friendly option without skimping on premium quality.

Sugalane stands out from others in the industry as they have been designed with salons in mind. This means if your client with human hair extensions needs a quick fix for their holiday, you can cater to this with confidence using the premium Sugalane synthetic hair range.

The range is mix and match, so can be tailored and tweaked to perfectly fit each client. Rather than having to purchase full sets in different colours, which is costly and wasteful, with Sugalane, clients have the chance to mix and blend to create their perfect set.

To help market your range, the Sugalane team have created an approved salons list, which will bring potential clients through your door who are looking for the Sugalane experience. Here clients can use your expertise to be colour matched, with purchasing at an approved salon discounted rate.

Making Socials Simple

This month, Social Media Guru Brad Williams, talks to us about unlocking the power of seasonal content and turning your in-salon Halloween magic into all year round success.

As a salon owner, social media is a crucial tool for attracting and retaining clients, but remaining relevant can be a challenge. In this article, we’ll explore how you can leverage your Halloweeninspired content to showcase techniques and styles that transcend the spooky season, keeping your salon’s social media presence fresh and engaging.

The Magic of Halloween Inspiration

For instance, a unique braiding technique used to create a voluminous witchy look, can easily be adapted for elegant bridal styles or summer festival hairdos. Showcasing these unique styles allows potential clients to see your salon’s versatility and the endless possibilities of your services.

Transformative Tutorials

Halloween tutorials are a fantastic way to engage with your audience while showcasing your stylists’ skills. Don’t forget to emphasise the techniques used during these tutorials and explain each step clearly to highlight how they can be adapted for everyday wear or special occasions.

For instance, if you’re creating a tutorial on mermaid waves for a Halloween look, mention how the same technique can be used to create beachy waves or glamorous curls. This not only provides valuable content but also positions your salon as a knowledgeable authority on haircare and styling.

Product Promotion

Use your Halloween content to subtly promote the products you use in your salon. For example, if you use a particular

brand of hairspray to set intricate Halloween updos, demonstrate how it can also be used to create long-lasting, everyday styles. This helps your followers associate your salon with the tools and products they need to achieve stunning hair looks year round.

Trendy Transformations

Every year, Halloween brings a new set of popular costume themes. Leverage these trends to create content that resonates with your audience. While you may focus on one specific costume for a Halloween tutorial, highlight the versatility of the hairstyle by showcasing how it can complement other costumes or even everyday outfits.

For instance, if you’re demonstrating a trendy ‘80s punk rock look for Halloween, discuss how the teased and colourful hair can also be worn with a modern twist. Your content should inspire clients to explore their style options beyond Halloween.

Consistency is Key

To make the most of your Halloweeninspired content all year round, develop a content calendar that incorporates seasonal themes and scheduled posts. This keeps your audience engaged and coming back for more, as they know they can expect valuable content from your salon.

In conclusion, your Halloweeninspired content doesn’t have to be a

one-time wonder. With careful planning and a strategic approach, you can turn these seasonal posts into treasures that showcase your salon’s expertise, versatility, and commitment to staying ahead of hair trends.

So, get creative, engage with your audience, and let the magic of Halloween work for you all year long on TikTok and Instagram!

Near the historic city of Cambridge, we speak to Julien Tordjmann, the Managing Director of 4T Medical Ltd. In this exclusive interview, we find out how 4T Medical can help you with your beauty and aesthetic business – whether you are a new start up looking for a brand partner or an established clinic searching for the latest technology.

Please introduce us to 4T Medical and what it strives to achieve.

4T Medical was founded in 2012. We are the official and exclusive UK distributor for a range of cosmeceutical and aesthetic brands ranging from skincare products to clinic devices. Our ethos is very much about supplying quality products at competitive prices. We are also very proud to be a Carbon Neutral organisation for the 5th year running.

We have a very comprehensive portfolio of products which are evidence-based, scientifically credible and meet the highest manufacturing standards. Many of your readers will be familiar with CLINICCARE, which is our most popular brand. outstanding results. The range is easy to use and includes targeted chemical skin peels, facial sheet masks, haircare, sunscreens, as well as professional and home care skincare. For the more experienced practitioner, we also sell devices such as microneedling, LED or radio frequency machines, dermal fillers, syringes and cannulae... We’re basically a one-stop-shop!

Do you offer guidance and ‘how to’ guides for the products?

In our 12 years of business, we have worked really hard to build a good reputation for our customer service. We want to make it as easy as possible to order from us and our friendly sales

team are happy to provide support and advice on any of our products. We provide treatment protocols, cost breakdowns, free marketing materials, CPD certified training courses and run regular webinars, workshops and demonstrations. We’re here to help as much or as little as you need.
