Awareness Month

With September being Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, leading hair extensions brand Great Lengths is proud to help support those experiencing the traumatic side effects of cancer treatment through its ongoing partnership with the Little Princess Trust.

Founded in 2005, the Little Princess Trust is a UK-based charity which makes and donates real hair wigs to children and young people experiencing hair loss caused by cancer and other illnesses. Great Lengths has been exclusively partnered with the charity since 2015 when James Henderson, owner of M Hair in Nottingham, initiated a donation scheme, which sees clients encouraged to donate their extensions, once removed, to the Little Princess Trust.

Great Lengths offers this unique donation scheme in over 1500 salons across the UK and Ireland, as well as in more than 60 countries globally. Clients who opt for Great Lengths extensions can change lives by agreeing to donate their used extensions to the Little Princess Trust. These extensions are expertly prepared by Great Lengths before being transformed into real hair wigs by the charity and provided free of charge to children and young people in need.

‘At Great Lengths, we believe in the power of giving back and supporting meaningful causes,’ says Joscelin McCourt, CEO of HB Collective, the home of Great Lengths. ‘Our partnership with the Little Princess Trust reflects our commitment to ethical practices, 100% premium hair quality, and making a positive impact on the lives of children and young people.’

Joscelin added, “By choosing Great Lengths extensions, clients not only enhance their own hair but also contribute to a greater cause, making a difference in the lives of those in need. The support of our stylists – including James and Jade – goes a long way in promoting this initiative to a wider audience and I’m thankful for their ongoing efforts and donations.” greatlengths.com

Championing Sustainability

With a commitment to a cleaner, toxin-free beauty, we hear from Greg Starkman, Co-Founder and CEO of Innersense Organic Beauty as he discusses how Innersense are redefining eco-friendly practices in the beauty industry.

One of the biggest challenges the beauty industry faces today is the overwhelming issue of packaging waste. With an estimated 120 billion pieces of packaging produced each year1, and a staggering 95% of it ending up as waste, the environmental impact is undeniable. In an industry often driven by excess, Innersense Organic Beauty stands as a beacon of intentionality, founded with a clear purpose: to combat this pressing issue head-on.

From its inception, Innersense has been committed to creating a sustainable, eco-conscious brand that not only delivers high-performance hair care but also prioritises the well-being of our planet and society. We are rewriting the narrative by adopting a holistic approach to sustainability, addressing the waste crisis, and minimizing our environmental footprint.

Our Environmental & Social Impact

Partnering and giving back to organizations that are taking action to create a better world is an essential part of our business. We have been a Certified B Corp since 2021, which means we meet the highest verified standards of social and environmental responsibility. In 2023 alone, with the support of our community, over $400,000 was donated to charitable organizations and nonprofits worldwide.

Our Sustainability

Our packaging is intentionally designed with Mother Earth, and a more sustainable future, in mind. We are dedicated to reducing the amount of

plastic and packaging waste that is used in the beauty industry by opting for 100% post-consumer recycled materials (with a minimum of 50%) to limit the creation of new virgin plastic and utilizing PCR HDPE, a recyclable plastic, because it’s one of the most readily available recycled plastics with one of the highest values for collection. We also make sure our consumers have the information they need to properly reuse and recycle our packaging to create a more circular structure through our partnership with How2Recycle®

Our Transparency

Our unwavering commitment to clean, pure and beautiful care is reflected in every aspect of every product, each formulated with the highest intention and purity. We ensure that every

ingredient we use has a purpose and considers the health of you, your hair and the planet. That means we avoid 3,000+ harmful and toxic ingredients and only use those that are nourishing, essential and beneficial. We are also Leaping Bunny certified and 100% cruelty free.

There is no step too small in the journey to living more sustainably.

We each have the power to make more mindful choices, from refilling large format size bottles, washing towels on shorter settings, offering reusable cups to salon guests and recycling packaging within the salon. It’s also important to align with brands that share like-minded values and goals. Together, we can make meaningful change for both people and the planet.

Where Art Meets Polish

Featuring as our wonderful Rising Star this month is Lindsay Heigh, also known as @nailsbylindsayy. Lindsay discusses the importance of avoiding burnout and how there’s enough room in the industry for all to exist and be successful.

When did you notice your passion for nails?

I’ve had a passion for nails since my early teens; my skills definitely weren’t at the level they are at now, though sadly for my poor friends who had nail polish all over their fingers for days after I did them. I can remember sitting on my bedroom floor painting daisies with a kirby grip; I’m very glad my tools have improved since then! I have always been really creative and love to chat away to anyone that will listen, so being a nail technician is the perfect job for me.

I did a gel polish course in 2017 and have learnt everything I know since then from the wonderful online nail community. I was originally based in Edinburgh, but I am now based in a gorgeous salon (Luxe Beauty) in Central Manchester!

How did you find your style, and what are your tips for other nail specialists trying to stand out?

The secret is that there is no secret to trying to find your style; it will come

naturally! There are so many nail technicians out there who specialise in so many different things and have their own beautiful styles, but there is enough room for all of us to exist and be successful. Try to be as individual as you can, and while you can take inspiration from others, the more direct copying you do, the longer it will take to find your own style!

I think it is important to note that I was doing nails part-time for almost 8 years up until May this year, when I finally

went full-time. I feel like it is so easy to compare yourself to others in this industry, and I am only now getting to a place where I feel more confident in what I do. It can take a long time to get your application perfect, get to grips with nail art, and build a client base, so never let yourself feel disheartened.

You are always learning as a nail technician; I still feel like I am learning things every day, which is so much fun and doesn’t have to be scary. To summarise: good things take time,

practice makes perfect, and the journey is just as beautiful as the destination!

What would you describe your speciality as, and how did this define your target audience?

My speciality tends to be any form of nail art, but specifically intricate nail art on a natural base. I make sure my content reflects this, which means my client base is made up of people who are interested in what I love to do because they book in as they like my work! The more natural and yourself you are, the more your target audience will simply come to you.

Social media marketing is key to increasing a beauty professionals client base. How did you grow your following, and what content works best to increase bookings?

Your social media channels are your portfolio, which everyone has access to - new clients, brands, and existing clients - so it is important to ensure that you make these look as good as possible. I understand that social media is like a whole extra full-time job alone, so I ensure I set aside enough time that is not client-filled during a week to allow me to keep on top of my socials. I have in the past used tools such as Instagram Ads (for example, when I first moved to Manchester, where I had zero clients); I do think this was helpful at the time, but these tools only work as well as your content does, so your channels need to be looking up to scratch before choosing to use anything like this!

For me, being consistent with quality content has been the best way to grow my socials. You don’t need a lot of

expensive gear for good-quality content, but investing in a good lighting setup is important! Try not to get too focused on the numbers, as this will only hinder your growth.

What are your goals for the future, and how do you plan on achieving them?

My goals for the near future are to focus on content creation a little bit more and to look into some more passive forms of income: being a nail technician is so much harder and more exhausting than people realise, and I don’t want to burn myself out and end up hating it. I’m hoping diversifying my income this way would allow me to be able to enjoy doing what I love without money pressures.

I would like to potentially look at

training and/or a nail art online e-book— watch this space!

What has been your favourite nail trend in recent months, and what trends are you predicting for winter nails?

My favourite nail trend from the most recent months has to be the resurgence of the beautiful blooming gel! It allows you to be really creative as there are so many gorgeous things you can do with it; however, it is also pretty easy to use, so inclusive for all levels of nail art.

Winter nails tend to be relatively similar every year I find; back to more block colour, including lots of deep browns and variations of red. I think chrome will also be a nice addition this year with people jazzing up their block colours!

Salon of the Month

Blue Tit, Portobello

For the colours, we wanted to blend in with the vibrant, colourful houses of Notting Hill, and we have achieved it!

Taking pride in their distinctive forward-thinking approach, Blue Tit is a collective of unique lifestyle salons situated across thirteen iconic London neighbourhoods, who embrace innovation and community. Blue Tit offers personalised services in beautifully designed spaces where creativity can thrive.

Just over six years ago, Blue Tit Portobello created a salon that feels like home for all that step through their doors. With a team of talented, experienced hairdressers, Blue Tit endeavour to make sure that, no matter what your hair type or texture is, clients leave the salon feeling like the best versions of themselves.

When asked what the salon prides themselves on and how they strive to stand out from competition, Kamila Pruszek, Blue Tit Portobello Co-Owner, highlighted, “Starting with having the best team we could wish for, we pride ourselves on creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. We focus on providing personalised service to each individual client. We also have a strong commitment to continuous education and training, staying ahead of trends, and delivering the latest in hairstyling.”

To cater to the diverse needs of clients, Blue Tit creates a warm and positive atmosphere, offering a wide selection of drinks, including monthly cocktails, smoothies and popcorn to snack on while clients are getting their hair done. For those who prefer, Blue Tit also offers a quiet service option and have a private room available for added privacy.

When it came to deciding on the tones and furniture used in the salon, blending in with the local surroundings was vital. Kamila said, “When we opened Portobello, I didn’t have much experience, but one of my business partners helped tremendously by ensuring we chose high-quality furniture that would last. For the colours, we wanted to blend in with the vibrant, colourful houses of Notting Hill, and we have achieved it!”

Setting a new standard for the hair and beauty industry globally, Blue Tit became the UK and Europe’s first salon

collective to achieve B Corp certification in 2020, given only to businesses committed to purpose beyond profit and to leaders that use business as a force for good. As a salon, Blue Tit prioritise the importance of sustainability and, as a result, have been verified as Europe’s first salon collective to achieve B Corp certification.

Having successfully achieved B Corp recertification, Blue Tit have renewed their social and environmental commitments for the next three years. This recertification showcases dedication to making a positive impact beyond profits, appealing to socially conscious colleagues and clients.

Hair salons are high-environmental impact businesses, and Blue Tit have made it their mission to make a difference and lead the way for the industry. They are proud to prioritise diversity and inclusion, community, and sustainability every step of the way.

Sustainability is equally as important to the clients at Blue Tit as they strive to play their part in reducing their carbon footprint. By consciously choosing Blue Tit for services, clients find an avenue to help the environment in what is an otherwise rather environmentally taxing industry. Kamila shared, “Our clients actively use our refill stations and fully cooperate in not bringing plastic into the salons. Their rebooking, positive reviews and repeat custom is evidence that sustainability is an important aspect of the services they seek.”

As a salon, making it through COVID and the challenging times of the pandemic was their biggest milestone. Kamila noted, “The biggest support I received during the pandemic was from my business partners, Andi and Matt. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. We made it through the pandemic and are still here and making our clients happy.”

Looking to the future, Blue Tit aims to continue growing and evolving as a salon, maintaining high standards throughout, while connecting and investing in the local community and keeping the team happy!

Sustainability

Beauty That Doesn’t Cost the Earth

With sustainability at the forefront of modern business, we focus on the broad spectrum of eco-friendly efforts that salons can adopt beyond typical eco-friendly products and practices. We hear from industry experts as they share how to introduce environmentally friendly choices without sacrificing style or luxury.

As we look back over the previous year, it’s a joy to see the multitude of hair salons making strides to become more eco-conscious, but with this being said, there’s still a long way to go! As an industry, 120 billion tonnes of waste are produced each year, making it clear that the cost of beauty runs deeper than clients’ pockets. But, as a community, we can create real change and make bigger steps in the right direction.

Historically, sustainability in the salon industry has been primarily focused on using eco-friendly hair care products. Despite this being a step in the right direction, today’s salon owners recognise that operating a sustainable salon extends beyond product choices to overall salon operations. This shift identifies that while eco-friendly products are important, they are not enough to make a salon truly sustainable. Instead, salon owners need to take a more comprehensive approach.

When asked about the importance of sustainability within a salon, Amelia Evans, Artistic Director of HARE & BONE, eagerly shared that embedding sustainable practices throughout a salons’ operations is a great way to lead by example and set a standard in the industry. Amelia continued, “Sustainability in a salon isn’t just an add-on; it’s integral to our role as mindful beauty professionals. We’re in a unique position where we can directly impact the environment and our clients’ choices. It’s about taking responsibility and making sure that every cut, colour, and conversation reflects a commitment to a greener future.” By implementing

Over 60% of UK consumers consider ethical and sustainable factors when purchasing personal care products.

such sustainable actions and practices, salons can significantly reduce their environmental impact and appeal to the growing volume of eco-conscious clients.

Considering the idea of appealing to more sustainability-conscious clients, Fry Taylor, Co-Founder of Green Salon Collective, shared, “There has been an eco-friendly shift, and you see it everywhere. Over 60% of UK consumers

consider ethical and sustainable factors when purchasing personal care products, such as cruelty-free or vegan cosmetics. Everything is led by consumer demand, and hair salons are no different.”

Sam Burnett, Creative Director and Owner of HARE & BONE, highlighted, “Salons have a fantastic opportunity to educate and inspire clients about sustainable beauty practices. Sharing

tips through in-salon conversations, newsletters and social media not only enhances customer engagement, but also, empowers clients to make better choices in their beauty routines. It’s about turning education into action and helping clients see that sustainable beauty isn’t just a trend, but a lifestyle choice they can be proud of.”

Continuing on the theme of education, Stephanie Hodgson, Head Nerd of Green Salon Collective Research, teamed up with Professor Denise Baden from Southampton University to work on “Mirror Talkers.” Said short, simple stickers inform salons to educate their consumers on the environmental benefits of the products rather than the traditional features and benefits. Fry shared, “The stickers are a fun way to communicate the message of sustainability without any judgement, and it makes a nice change from the “have you been on holiday” chat too.”

The beauty industry has significant responsibility to shift towards more sustainable practices, and salons are on the front line of this change. One step towards improving your salon’s sustainability credentials may be reducing water usage by opting for biodegradable towels as opposed to traditional cloth towels, which take a significant toll on the environment and a salon’s operating costs.

Sophia Vujovich, CEO and Founder of VUJOSKIN, suggested, “By choosing VUJOSKIN’s biodegradable face towels, salons can drastically cut down their

Salons have a fantastic opportunity to educate and inspire clients about sustainable beauty practices.

carbon footprint. Every towel used is a step towards a cleaner planet, allowing salons to proudly demonstrate their commitment to sustainability without compromising on quality or client care.”

A further shift to greater sustainability comes from AUTHENTIC BEAUTY CONCEPT refill bar. Launched in 2022, the Refill Bar was introduced to help salons reduce single-use plastic and align with the consumer trend for greener living. The refill system helps

create a circular economy, benefiting the environment, the client, and the salon by cutting consumer plastic consumption and further reducing the carbon footprint for all parties.

As the current Sustainable Salon of the Year and AUTHENTIC BEAUTY CONCEPT partner, En Route Hair and Beauty in Wakefield has made significant steps to run a sustainable business.

Owner Melenie Tudor explained, “Simple switches such as LED lighting, reducing water waste by using eco-friendly shower heads, and biodegradable towels all support the push for greater sustainability without changing our dayto-day services. We’ve also introduced an eco-fee, that’s £1 on every service. This fee has more than provided enough income to ensure we can roll out other sustainable measures without impacting our services or salon experience.”

In summary, we encourage salon owners to think creatively about their sustainability journey, embracing not just eco-friendly products but a comprehensive approach including social responsibility, innovative waste management, and customer education. By incorporating said changes, salons can position themselves as forwardthinking leaders in a continually evolving beauty industry.

Going Green

As part of our wider sustainability feature, we share our top 5 sustainable swaps to implement in your business in order to run a more eco-friendly salon!

Get ready to revolutionise your salon experience with Replant Towels, the cheekiest eco-friendly towel brand to hit the UK market. Say goodbye to the endless cycle of washing and drying, and hello to a greener, cleaner and more hygienic salon! With Replant Towels, you can save time, money, energy and water. Water You Waiting For?

Water Saver is L’Oréal Professionel Paris’ first showerhead, leveraging Gjosa’s patented water fragmentation technology to significantly reduce water flow at the backwash by up to 69%, with great rinsing performance. The Water Saver uses water fragmentation technology, using only 2.4 litres of water per minute compared to the 7 litres consumed by a standard showerhead, simultaneously improving the customer experience and salon sustainability.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Astonishingly, less than 2% of salon metals (foil and colour tubes) are recycled, with the rest – millions of tons - going to landfill. O&M has announced a partnership with Green Salon Collective (GSC) for 2024, set to reward salons for being more sustainable. The partnership is the first of its kind for GSC, who are offering a monthly GSC credit/voucher of £25 per every 50 tubes (so £50 per 100 tubes and so on) to any salon buying O&M CØR.color (£8.95/tube).

Hair That Cares

When it comes to products used in your salon, it’s important to search for brands displaying a strong consideration for the environment to help reduce your carbon footprint. With this in mind, we introduce to you the Invati Ultra Advanced™ Collection for Thicker, Fuller-Looking Hair by Aveda. For the launch of Invati Ultra Advanced™, Aveda uses responsibly sourced, certified organic ginger root extract, eclipta prostrata leaf extract, amla extract and turmeric root extract. Aveda’s supplier of these ingredients has programs to drive environmental and social improvements, including ethical sourcing and labour practices and a commitment to social and environmental policies and programs. The Invati Ultra Advanced™ collection features bottles and tubes made from minimum 90% post-consumer recycled plastic, furthering Aveda’s dedication to sustainability.

Banishing Black Heads

Safely and Effectively

Since the advent of the internet, people have become more conscious of their looks, and if your face is your brand, you must take extra care to protect your brand. Recurrent blackheads are a common skin condition that affects your skin and consequently your brand. The good news is there is an effective solution to banishing blackheads safely, effectively, and permanently.

One Size Does Not Fit All

Although blackheads are common in all people groups, the treatment of blackheads is not consistent for everyone. Over-the-counter products that may work on Caucasian skin may perform adversely on ethnic skin. Some of the commonly used methods for removing blackheads usually result in a domino effect, creating other skin problems such as allergies and breakouts. Why? Simply stated, many drugstore products are filled with harsh chemicals that dry the skin and cause flaking, which can increase oil production, compounding the problem. Sounds like a vicious cycle, right? Well, it doesn’t have to be—the cycle can end today as you begin to arm yourself and

your clients with new information to heal your skin from the inside out. Just as the hues of our skin are different, the care required to maintain and heal our skin is different.

Solution

Blackheads can be a pesky skin issue, but fear not, there are numerous ways to banish them and achieve clear, radiant skin! From homemade face cleansers to over-the-counter treatments with salicylic acid, the options are plentiful. Dermatologists often recommend gentle exfoliation and retinoid creams to prevent and treat blackheads effectively. Remember, while it might be tempting, avoid squeezing them to prevent skin damage.

Your Sustainability To-Do List

As part of our wider sustainability feature, we hear from Samantha Cusick, Founder of Stā Studios and Samantha Cusick London as she shares a list of simple changes to make your salon more sustainable. Over time these small changes add up, making a big difference to the planet and demonstrating your environmental responsibility.

Today:

Ditch the Single-Use Plastics and Stop doing Laundry:

Say goodbye to single-use plastics in your salon. Swap out those disposable cups and straws for reusable or compostable options. Consider switching to disposable, compostable towels, as this reduces energy consumption from washers and dryers, saving you money and the planet’s resources.

Go Green with Your Products:

Take a good look at the products on your shelves. Are they eco-friendly, crueltyfree, and sustainably packaged? If not, it’s time for a change. Get your team on board by educating them on why these products are better for your clients and the planet. Consider stocking brands like authentic beauty concept that offer refills to cut down on waste.

Green Your Cleaning Routine:

Switch to eco-friendly cleaning products that are non-toxic and biodegradable, there are also many refillable options out there to cut plastic even further and are very cost effective too.

This Week:

Partner with Sustainable Suppliers:

Review your suppliers and start choosing those who prioritise sustainability. Look for suppliers who use renewable energy, recycle, or offer carbon-neutral shipping. Make sure sustainability is a key factor in any future purchasing decisions.

Be Energy Smart:

Make sure everyone is turning off tools

and lights when they’re not being used. If you haven’t already, switch to LED lighting throughout the salon—it’s more energy-efficient and lasts longer, bonus points if you can use sensors instead of light switches!

Step Up Your Recycling Game:

Set up an easy-to-use recycling system in your salon. Make sure bins are clearly labelled for paper, plastic, glass, and aluminium. Educate your team on the importance of recycling, and encourage clients to recycle any product packaging after their treatments.

This Month:

Host a Workshop:

Get your team together for a sustainability workshop. Cover the basics like energy conservation, reducing waste, and the importance of choosing sustainable products. Empower everyone to make eco-friendly choices at work and in their personal lives too.

Check Your Carbon Footprint:

Take some time to calculate your salon’s carbon footprint and set goals to reduce it. Consider offsetting emissions by planting trees or investing in renewable energy credits. If your team drive to work, perhaps think of an incentive for them to use public transport, cycle or at the very least car share.

Connect with other local businesses with the same sustainability values: Launch a sustainability campaign in your local community. Host an event to educate clients about eco-friendly hair care, offer discounts on sustainable products, or partner with local environmental groups.

The odds are now firmly in favour of salons using Vish Colour Management, with dynamic pricing ensuring every colour service turns a sizable profit. Three salon owners talk about how charging for colour using Vish technology has changed their business.

Grace Martin, Sacco Martin, Bath

If I took Vish away from my team now I’d have a mutiny. They love it because its accuracy and expediency have improved efficiency and productivity to the benefit of our team and their clients. They are no longer searching around for record cards or trying to remember the previous visit and their colour is always spoton. Vish has transformed my business completely. It was so hard after Covid, but by bringing in Vish we were able to move to dynamic pricing to capture the cost of additional colour and so protect our profits. More recently we’ve shifted to a time and product model. Charging for colour means our costs are always covered, so the price is fair and transparent and every single service is profitable. Couple this with the reduction in wastage, due to colour formulations being so accurate, meaning our stock costs have been lowered, and we are so much better off! Vish is definitely the way forward.

Luke Ormsby, Luke Ormsby Salons, Pinner, Primrose Hill & Thame

We were not charging anywhere near an accurate price for extra product until we got Vish. Now all additional colour is costed and communicated to our front desk by Vish, resulting in every colour service turning profit regardless of hair type or length. The business is now consistently profitable, allowing me to open a third location. Vish also makes it easier when ordering colour because we know on average what we use on a day-to-day basis and only buy what we need. This means we are no longer paying for colour to sit gathering dust on our shelves and we never run short of the team’s favourite shades.

Some clients need more colour on their hair than others, depending on the length and thickness of their hair. Before Vish, we charged roundabout the same price, so for a heavy-use client we weren’t breaking even. But now with Vish, we have dynamic pricing. The colour allowance is set at a realistic base rate and when a client needs extra colour or additional services, the cost is automatically added to their bill. Lots of clients don’t have anything extra to pay. Vish is really precise, making it great for the environment as we now have little or no waste. Charging is also transparent and our clients recognise it’s much fairer for everyone and great for going green. Want

Education Station

Welcome to the education station, your one-stop-shop to gain unrivalled knowledge and trends to elevate your salon. This month, we hear how to run an eco-friendly salon: a smart and sustainable choice!

The salon industry has a significant environmental impact due to its high consumption of water, electricity, and heat. As a small business owner in the UK, adopting eco-friendly practices is not just about reducing this impact—it’s also about gaining a competitive edge, ensuring legal compliance, and securing long-term sustainability.

Legal Compliance

In the UK, small businesses must adhere to environmental regulations. Noncompliance can lead to fines, legal issues, and a damaged reputation. For instance, the Climate Change Act of 2008 mandates an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050. Aligning your business with these regulations ensures you operate sustainably and avoid potential legal troubles.

Cost Savings

Eco-friendly practices can lead to substantial cost reductions. By adopting energy-efficient equipment, reducing waste, and conserving resources, salons can lower their operational expenses. For example, switching to LED lighting and using water-saving techniques can significantly reduce electricity and water bills.

Competitive Advantage

Today’s consumers are increasingly eco-conscious, preferring to support businesses committed to sustainability. By becoming an eco-friendly salon, clinic or barbershop, you can differentiate yourself from competitors, attracting clients who value environmental responsibility.

Future Sustainability

Embracing eco-friendly practices isn’t just good for your business—it’s essential for the planet. By reducing your environmental footprint, you contribute to combating climate change and protecting resources for future generations. This not only fulfils a moral obligation but also positions your business as a forward-thinking leader in the industry.

The NHBF recognises the growing importance of environmental consciousness in the beauty sector and are here to support you every step of the way, providing comprehensive resources, expert advice, and practical tools to help create an environmentally friendly business.

How to Transition to an Eco-Friendly Salon

Use ProductsEco-Friendly

Start by switching to sustainable products like shampoos, conditioners, and hair dyes made from natural, biodegradable ingredients. These products are free from harmful chemicals, benefiting both the environment and the health of your clients and staff.

Implement Energy- Efficient Equipment

Upgrade to energy-efficient lighting, heating, and cooling systems. Consider using LED bulbs and energy-saving tools like hair dryers and styling irons. These changes not only reduce energy consumption but also lower maintenance costs.

Minimise Waste

Adopt recycling and composting practices, and reduce paper waste by going digital where possible. Use reusable or eco-friendly towels and hair caps to cut down on single-use items. Refillable product dispensers can also reduce plastic waste.

Promote Sustainable Transportation

Encourage clients and employees to use public transport, carpool, or bike to your salon. Offer incentives like discounts or loyalty points for those who opt for eco-friendly transportation methods, enhancing your business’s socially responsible image.

Sustainability Solutions

In light of Recycling Week taking place 14-16th October with the theme of “Rescue Me” for 2024, we hear from the Green Salon Collective and two of their Green Libertines, Hannah Cowell and Mel Tudor, to explore how your salon can do more this October!

In salons, we use so many things, from single-use items to products and electrical items, so it can be very easy when things are finished, broken, or no longer needed to just throw them away. This Recycle Week campaign is focusing on rescuing reusable items to recycle that would otherwise end up in the bin.

We are all familiar with the 3 R’s – reduce, reuse, recycle but here are some other R’s that you might not have thought about!

Refurbishing: How many electrical items do you use in the salon, and what happens to them when they break? There are recycling facilities all over the country to help dispose of electrical items, but a better alternative would be to find people that can refurbish or fix them to be reused. If you do need new electrical equipment, look to buy refurbished; they are usually as good as new but without the price tag!

Repurposing: Using waste salon materials to clean, for example, old towels as cleaning cloths.

Reselling: Similar to refurbishing, if you have old salon furniture or other items you no longer want or need, these can be sold or donated to ensure they get a second life using specialist sites.

Mel

Owner of En Route Hair & Beauty

With recycling week coming up in October, it’s worth jogging people’s memories on the importance of recycling. In the UK, recycling saves about 10-15 million tonnes of carbon emissions a year, the equivalent of taking 3.5 million cars off the road.

Mel’s Top Tips:

• Make recycling easy by making sure you’ve got adequate waste bins in your home and salon. It makes recycling much easier if you know what goes where.

• Make recycling a strong habit; that way, you’ll never forget to do it.

• When recycling plastics, it’s really important to wash everything before it goes in the bin. If it’s not clean, it can’t be recycled.

• Upcycling items is a great way to recycle too. You can save money and help the environment by upcycling old furniture and giving it a lick of paint instead of buying new or even buy second hand.

The Top 5 Benefits of Recycling Are...

• Reduces waste sent to landfill.

• Prevents pollution into the environment.

• Conserves our natural resources.

• Conserves energy.

• Creates jobs and boosts our economy.

Haircare That Works Wonders

With over 20 years of experience in the hair industry, Neil Capstick identified a gap in the market for an essential range of products that not only work but combine both luxury and affordability. Recognising these needs, Neil set out to create Neäl & Wølf with stylists and sustainability in mind.

Since 2009, Neäl & Wølf have been dedicated to creating products that deliver incredible results you can see and feel, using a variety of nourishing, high-performance ingredients, all while being sulphate and paraben-free. These ingredients are carefully selected not just for their performance but also for their gentleness on the hair and scalp, ensuring that every use leaves hair feeling luxurious and healthy. Neäl & Wølf take pride in their ability to combine effective hair care with an indulgent experience, ensuring that our customers don’t have to choose between luxury and efficacy.

Looking forward, Neäl & Wølf are committed to expanding the VeganFriendly range even further. All new products being launched will be vegan from the start, reflecting the brands dedication and commitment. In addition, the existing product line is being reformulated to be vegan-friendly, with a goal to complete this transition by the end of 2024. This initiative is part of the broader mission to align products with the values of customers.

Neäl & Wølf’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond our product formulations to our packaging as well. Current packaging is made from an LDPE/HDPE mix, allowing it to be recycled. However, there’s always room for improvement. Over the past couple of years, the team have been working hard behind the scenes to launch new, more sustainable packaging. The overall aim is to transition products to be made with a minimum of 35% recycled plastic, helping to reduce the impact of singleuse plastic in landfill.

Neäl & Wølf are proudly and officially approved under the Leaping Bunny Programme by Cruelty Free International, the leading organisation working to end animal testing. Leaping Bunny requires brands to investigate their entire supply chain for any cases of animal testing. Approval must be given to all of a brand’s finished products, and

brands must recommit to the pledge annually, providing third-party audits. You can rest assured that Neäl & Wølf has been a cruelty-free brand from the beginning, with products tested in salons by stylists, not on animals. Behind the Leaping Bunny Approval are years of dedication to the cause.

A Cut Above the Rest

Whether you’re cutting ladies’ or gents’ hair, the tools you use will either help or hinder your daily task. Choosing the right scissors is essential, but so is looking after them. We hear from Cool Blades as they share their top tips for finding and caring for your perfect pair!

With over 30 years’ experience in the hair and beauty industry, as both stylists and salon owners, Cool Blades understand the challenge of finding high-quality products and providing helpful advice. Frequently

Asked Scissor Questions

I initially trained with straight scissors; why should I consider an offset/ergonomic scissor?

Offset or ergonomic scissors allow the arm and shoulder to be in a lower position, which reduces repetitive strain on the shoulder and wrist.

Why spend over £20 on scissors or thinning scissors when cheaper ones will work?

Cheaper scissors are fine as a backup pair, but for consistent, accurate cutting techniques, choose a scissor that will deliver the skills you have learned and will last a lot longer than a cheap pair.

How frequently do my scissors require servicing?

Scissors begin to dull from the first cut and should be serviced at least once a year, more if used frequently.

Should I use just any company to service my scissors?

When a scissor is professionally sharpened, only the smallest amount

of metal is removed to ensure that the scissor cuts properly and allows for many more services in the future. Very few sharpeners know how to do this or how to properly set the scissor edge back to its original standard.

Visit www.coolblades.co.uk for all your equipment supplies and professional servicing and spares.

Top 5 Tips for Maintaining Your Scissors

1. An obvious tip is to avoid dropping your scissors on hard surfaces, as this can damage them and cause the blades to misalign or bend the tips. Also, take care when storing your scissors; open scissor blades in a draw can be easily damaged.

2. Keep scissors dry to prevent stains, rust, and corrosive damage; always clean and oil every day.

3. Only cut hair with your scissors, and remember that unwashed hair may contain sand and grit that can blunt your scissors edges.

4. If you notice the hair folding or bending while cutting, the tension adjuster may be too loose; after adjustment, if it is still folding the hair, then your scissors may be ready for a service.

5. Scissors and thinning scissors don’t last forever. If you take care of goodquality scissors, they could last 5 years or more. Unfortunately, we see many scissors sent to us for servicing every year that have been ruined by poor sharpening.

Experience Thicker, Fuller Hair

How often do your clients say the following: “I wish the hair around my face was thicker,” “My colour fades – what do you recommend?” and “My hair is so fine; I’d love more volume!” Now you can address your clients’ most common hair challenges and increase salon profits with the Thicker Fuller Hair service from Great Lengths.

World leader of the highest quality hair extensions for over 30 years, Great Lengths are handcrafted in Italy, fully traceable, and were the first extensions brand to be awarded prestigious B Corp certification. Award-winning GL Tapes are discreet and lightweight, boasting the same virgin Remy double-drawn hair as the brand’s keratin bond extensions. Available in a choice of lengths and over 90 shades, results can be fully customised to suit clients requirements and can address a multitude of concerns, from lack of volume and slow growth to hair loss and thinning.

Promising fast, professional results without permanent commitment, GL Tapes are the easiest way to achieve thicker, fuller hair and can simply be added to a client’s cut and blow-dry appointment to increase average spend while addressing their hair concerns.

Application takes minimal time, and Great Lengths’ ground-breaking technology ensures that the condition of natural hair isn’t compromised. The ultrafine latex-free adhesive strip is virtually undetectable in the hair and results last around six weeks. Hair can be reapplied at two additional appointments, promising thicker, fuller hair for a total of 18 weeks.

The thicker, fuller hair service is also the ideal way to introduce non-colour clients to the possibilities of a colour service without commitment or the use of chemicals. Create instant tonal blends and balayage effects, or go bold with fashion colours, at the same time as boosting volume and adding fullness.

Thicker, fuller hair targets some of clients’ most common hair challenges, creating results that are natural-looking and easy-to-manage. Once they have experienced the benefits of GL Tapes, clients who are prepared to commit to a more permanent solution can progress to Great Lengths keratin bonds. These bonds can create the same volume and fullness but create results that last around six months.

KEUNE Style Relaunch

A delightful afternoon was spent at the House of Keune flagship store in London for the Keune style relaunch with global ambassador Luke Benson. The afternoon kicked off with an insightful talk from Sophie Benson, the Kenue education manager, discussing how education is integral to Kenue products, which are curated entirely to support hairdressers. Sophie was then joined by Luke Benson, as he delved into the new range and the broad spectrum the products can achieve from a texture point of view, also talking about his favourite product, ‘Cashmere Cloud’.

We headed to hersheons to experience Murad’s signature Deep Cleanse Back Treatment by the wonderful Karyll, and discovered Murad’s latest innovations in body care in the form of retexturizing body spray and body pads. The treatment is ideal for those who suffer from back blemishes, and consisted of a double cleanse, relaxing massage and a pore-cleansing mask. As a self-proclaimed skincare fanatic, a back facial had always been on my radar, and I left feeling confident in the knowledge my skin was clear and hydrated!

5 Minutes With…

Jonathan Cooper, Founder and Director of The Director’s Helpline – a free, impartial helpline for company directors currently experiencing stressful or pressurised financial circumstances – shares advice on the one thing salon owners can do to increase the financial health of their business.

In recent years, it’s been a tough and turbulent time for many businesses, especially salon owners.

You’ve faced, and continue to face, financial challenges from all angles –rising energy costs, increasing business rates and supply chain costs, and recovery from the pandemic, to name just a few.

Against the backdrop of a recovering economy and cost-of-living crisis, consumers have been paying closer attention to their expenditure more than ever before, too. Their confidence in spending has been negatively impacted, which has seen many cut back on ‘luxury’ items and services.

This shift in spending habits has affected the footfall and financial health of SMEs in the salon and beauty sector in recent times, as a result.

It’s, therefore, perhaps no surprise that last year research found that two-fifths of salon owners were anxious about the future.

The National Hair & Beauty Federation’s latest report has also revealed debt is a problem for 56% of sector businesses, and that 45% of businesses with debt estimate it will take between 2-5 years to clear.

While salon owners like yourself are being financially attacked in a multipronged manner, it’s important to remain positive, because support is out there.

How to increase the financial health of your salon

Your business is your passion and expertise, while your company is the legal entity that contains your business. It’s important for salon owners not to overlook this.

So, if the mass of economic challenges have put pressure on your salon’s cash flow, and you have debts, it’s important

that you don’t fall into the trap of thinking your business is ‘in trouble’. It’s the company that’s ‘in trouble’, and that it’s responsible for managing any debts.

As an entrepreneur in this sector, you bring the creative flair and skills to your profession. It isn’t, and shouldn’t, be your responsibility to understand the complex funding options or business structure.

This is where it’s vital to invest in good people and good advice to provide a support network that empowers salon owners. They will provide the insights and options to help you feel more in control, enabling you to make informed decisions that put your salon’s financial health first.

So, if salon owners do one thing differently this year to future-proof their business, it should be to invest in

the right accountant and explore free, independent advice to help create a more robust company and allow for greater proactivity.

If you’re a salon owner who would like free, impartial advice on your finances, you can get in touch with The Director’s Helpline via: www.thedirectorshelpline.org/contact/

Where Talent Thrives

A salon’s growth is extremely dependant on the people you hire and without good staff it would be a struggle to run successfully. Whilst it is important to hire staff that are experienced and knowledgeable, it also pays to hire up and coming talent. In light of this we hear how Evolve Academy support inspiring talent to thrive in the industry.

Based in Manchester’s trendy Northern Quarter Evolve Academy’s 28-seater training academy including classrooms and learning zone, offers the perfect setting to gain the skills and knowledge required to become a stylist within the Hairdressing and Barbering industry. Fitted with the finest range of REM salon fixtures and fittings alongside using all Wella products in training sessions, Evolve is perfectly equipped to help individuals reach their full potential!

An apprentice can be anyone over the age of 16, and a hairdressing apprenticeship level 2 standard can last anything from 18-24 months. This means that whilst learning the day-to-day salon jobs, apprentices will also be acquiring all the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to work as a junior stylist. Through a collaborative approach with Evolve Academy, you can ensure your apprentice is gaining all the relevant skills required to succeed in the hairdressing and barbering industry.

Through hiring an apprentice it

can also help to create an endearing workplace environment for all employees and clients. Experienced employees can help to influence the way your apprentices behave and also develop their learning within the salon. If you are concerned about hiring apprentices with little experience because they will take longer to learn the ropes of the job, think of it this way instead: hiring an apprentice means you have a fresh mind to work with, in terms of their knowledge of the job role, and they will learn everything

from your nurturing rather than coming in with old and possibly outdated knowledge.

At Evolve Academy, the team understand the challenges within the industry and the commitment required in taking on a new apprentice and working together can create the perfect environment for developing the new talent of the future.

Is there a cost for the training?

All 16-18 learners are fully-funded, however for 21+ learners there is a 5% contribution that employers must pay towards the training. Currently this is between £250 and £550 depending on the Apprenticeship Level.

Beauty Breakthroughs

Committed to helping beauty professionals achieve excellence, we hear from Zemits as they discuss 5 trends you can’t miss in 2024 and attractive treatments to elevate your practice to a new level. Dive into the top 5 technologies that impact clients the most and will help you outshine your competitors!

“Glass Skin”: A Shine You Can’t Tear Your

Eyes Away From

Imagine a complexion so luminous and smooth that it resembles a piece of finely crafted glass. This is the essence of the “Glass Skin” trend that has taken the beauty world by storm. Achieving this radiant, almost reflective glow involves a meticulous skincare routine designed to hydrate, smooth, and brighten the skin. Our advanced professional aesthetics machine, with its unique [feature], plays a crucial role in helping clients attain this coveted look, delivering precise treatments that enhance the skin’s natural radiance. Dive into the secrets behind glass skin and discover how our technology can make it a reality.

How to achieve this? A combination of powerful hydration, cleansing, and exfoliation. Previously, painful chemical peels or abrasive dermabrasion were required to achieve the desired glowing, flawless skin. But now is the time to innovate — Zemits HydroDiamond™ technology will give your clients the desired glassy glow with just one gentle and efficient treatment.

Why aestheticians love Zemits Dermeluxx™:

• Instant visual results to get the following bookings.

• The most popular treatment in the US and Europe

• Low consumable expenses: Less than £5 in consumables for one treatment

• Superior Exfoliation & Extractions

• 2-Year Warranty

A magnificent three-step skin protocol with the Zemits Dermeluxx Pro combines

two additional technologies in addition to HydroDiamond™: oxygen therapy and cryotherapy.

One treatment creates a “Glass Skin” appearance for your clients.

Focus on the Skin Barrier

One fundamental aspect often overlooked in the quest for flawless skin is the skin barrier. This outer layer of the epidermis is our first defence against environmental aggressors and is vital for maintaining proper hydration levels. When the skin barrier is compromised, it can lead to various issues, such as dryness, sensitivity, and irritation. Aesthetic technologies offer cuttingedge treatments designed to repair and strengthen the skin barrier, ensuring your skin remains resilient and healthy. Explore how protecting your client’s skin barrier is

essential for achieving long-term beauty and how our solutions can help.

The trend of 2024 is to maintain the health of this protective layer. Therefore, atraumatic, non-invasive restorative treatments became more emphasised. For example, electroporation and ultrasound, as needless mesotherapy, aim to maximise the saturation of cells with active substances that contribute to skin regeneration and renewal.

Skin Minimalism: Less Is More for a Healthy Glow

In a world overflowing with skincare products and treatments, “Skin Minimalism” is a refreshing change. This trend focuses on simplifying your skincare routine to include only what is necessary for maintaining a healthy, natural glow. Emphasising quality over

quantity, skin minimalism advocates for treatments that support genuine skin recovery and strength, such as cryotherapy. Our professional aesthetics machine aligns perfectly with this trend, offering targeted treatments that enhance your skin’s health without unnecessary steps. Learn how embracing skin minimalism can transform your skincare routine and achieve lasting results with our innovative technology.

Time to focus on natural skin recovery and strengthening, and so it’s time for a cryo facial!

This natural, safe effect of controlled cooling accelerates cell metabolic processes, stimulating blood circulation and intensive arterial blood oxygenation.

Skin Minimalism with CryoElegance™ by Zemits focuses on your client’s natural rejuvenation.

Skin Analysis: The Future of Personalised Beauty

As we look towards 2024, personalised skin analysis is poised to become a cornerstone of aesthetic beauty. More and more aesthetics professionals are utilising advanced diagnostic technology powered by AI to provide detailed and accurate skin assessments, allowing for customised treatment plans that address individual needs. This trend underscores the importance of a deeper understanding of your skin to achieve optimal care results. By integrating precise skin analysis into their services, we empower beauticians to deliver tailored solutions that lead to superior outcomes.

Therefore, the Zemits Skin Analysis

device is a trend follower and a trendsetter.

With a 30 million clinical cases database, the Zemits Skin Analysis Pro device can comprehensively analyse the skin’s 12 main characteristics in just 15 seconds. From skin hydration levels to texture and pore depth, it provides a wealth of information that can guide your treatment decisions and enhance the effectiveness of your services.

Also, according to the analysed condition, the device can offer a set of

cosmetics and predict skin conditions with and without their use.

UV protection

You may have heard it before, but in 2024, the trend of protecting the skin from ultraviolet radiation has reached an unprecedented scale. Beauty bloggers and influencers are advocating for adequate UV protection. They’re not just setting trends but making skin health a top priority. We can’t help but agree and advise you to complete each facial protocol with Zemits devices and products with SPF protection.

As we venture into 2025, these beauty breakthroughs are setting new standards in the industry. From the radiant allure of “Glass Skin” to the simplicity of skin minimalism, the emphasis is on achieving natural, healthy, and sustainable beauty. By focusing on the essentials—such as protecting the skin barrier, personalising skincare through advanced analysis, and prioritising UV protection—beauty professionals can provide clients with results that are not only immediate but long-lasting. Embrace these trends, elevate your practice, and help your clients shine with confidence and vitality all year round.

Cutting Ties

In the words of ABBA, “Breaking up is never easy, I know,” but in the beauty industry, with client relationships at the heart of everything we do, there may come a time when hair and beauty professionals must consider parting ways with a client. With the help of industry experts, we explore how to navigate this delicate situation.

It’s commonly known that ‘the customer is always right’, and, granted, nine out of ten times they are, but it’s the small percentage of disrespectful, demeaning and destructive customers that can cause a challenging environment for all. This being said, when it comes to the chronic complainers, the ones who make your heart sink when they rebook, something has to change.

In an industry where personal interactions are integral to daily work, negative clients impact more than just morale, having adverse effects on staff retention and, ultimately, your base line. With a multitude of reasons you may want to call it quits with certain clients, it’s never an easy task. In light of this, we’re on hand with industry experts to discuss navigating the breakup with professionalism and respect.

Breaking up with a client is never an easy decision. When you think about it, you’re essentially removing someone who brings revenue to your business. Sounds crazy, right? But ultimately, it’s in your best interest to let these clients go to maintain the quality of services you provide. Juanita Huber-Millet, Founder and Creative Director at Townhouse, shared, “There have been a few instances where we have had to end relationships with customers when the situation became unsustainable due to poor treatment of our team. It’s always a tough call, but, in the end, it’s about ensuring that we can continue to deliver the best experience for all our customers.”

Phill Galagher, Owner of Dot Hair Liverpool, discussed his experience with client breakups due to significant mismatches between the client’s expectations and what stylists can realistically deliver. Phill noted, “When clients consistently express dissatisfaction

Research indicates that for every customer who complains, as many as 25 others may have had a similar negative experience, but chose not to voice their concerns.

with minor details or have unrealistic demands, it can create a stressful and unproductive environment for both parties. In such cases, we believe it’s best to have an open and honest conversation with the client and suggest that they might be better suited to a different professional.”

As Phill alluded to, being in such a creative industry, it’s not uncommon for creative differences to occur. The client’s definition of ‘short curtain bangs’ or ‘long almond nails’ may be different to your trained eye, and if you aren’t seeing eye to eye when it comes to your services and results, it may be best to point them towards an alternative provider.

Kelly Saynor, NIP and Founder of PRFKT (The Perfect Peel, Glutaceuticals) and Renew Clinic, continued the notion of creative differences being a prominent reason for clients and beauty professionals parting ways, as she shared her experience of a client breakup, “The patient had unrealistic expectations and lacked clarity regarding the results. It is quite common for clients to use your expertise and experience initially, only to seek out lower-cost options afterwards.” When it comes to navigating the more difficult client, the key is to not paint everyone with the same brush and to treat each client on a case-bycase basis. Avril Kealy, Phorest Digital Content strategist, suggested trying to differentiate between a challenging client and a bad client in order to help navigate the situation. Avril shared, “We define challenging clients as those who have had an unsatisfactory experience with your business and have expressed

While navigating a client breakup, we find that direct and honest communication is essential.

their concerns. An unhappy client, while sometimes hard to deal with, often holds a passion for your services and a deep concern for good customer service. When their issue is rectified properly, they can become extremely loyal to your business.”

Avril continued, “By addressing the concerns of one challenging client, you not only resolve their issue, but also improve your services for many others who might share the same sentiment, even if they remain silent. Research indicates that for every customer who

complains, as many as 25 others may have had a similar negative experience, but chose not to voice their concerns. Addressing the concerns of a challenging client can have a far-reaching impact, enhancing the experience for numerous clients.”

Looking further to what one might consider a ‘bad’ client, Avril discussed how spending even a small percentage of your time dealing with bad clients can often create a negative atmosphere in your business that will affect your team and visitors. If you’re dealing with clients

who chronically complain, lie, consume the majority of your time, or even have an abusive personality, it’s time to cut the ties!

Avril noted, “If a client is consistently ‘bad’ and their actions affect your salon atmosphere and team, it’s time to ban them. While banning a client is not foolproof and can sometimes result in additional short-term conflict between your business and the client (people rarely take kindly to being banned from businesses), going about it in a professional and calm manner will streamline the process.”

Although parting ways with clients is tricky, the key is understanding how to diffuse the situation with grace, professionalism and respect. Phil recommended, “While navigating a client breakup, we find that direct and honest communication is essential. We ensure we explain our reasons clearly and avoid making promises that we cannot fulfil.” Kelly recommended a similar notion, as she suggested, “I explained that if I could no longer deliver the results she desired, it might be in her best interest to explore other options. Throughout the discussion, I emphasised that her happiness and well-being were

By setting healthy boundaries and communicating openly, you can maintain a positive and sustainable environment.

at the forefront of my concerns. By being transparent and compassionate, I was able to navigate the situation gracefully, ensuring the conversation ended on a constructive note while preserving mutual respect.”

Following the “breakup,” your boundaries may have shifted in order to protect your business moving forward. Julia discussed how customer breakups have been invaluable at Townhouse for setting and maintaining strong boundaries, as she shared, “These experiences have reinforced the need to protect not just our business, but also our incredible team members and other customers. As a result, we’ve been able to establish clearer policies and foster a healthier work environment moving forward.”

Julia continued, “Remember to

prioritize your own well-being and that of your team. Overextending yourself and your team can lead to burnout and negatively impact the quality of your overall services. By setting healthy boundaries and communicating openly, you can maintain a positive and sustainable environment.”

While, inevitably, nobody likes to have to “fire” a bad salon client, sometimes this is vital to safeguard the happiness and safety of your salon, your team and your other clients. Keeping these problematic customers away can also help protect your business’s reputation. No matter how difficult the situation, remember to back up all claims, remain respectful and professional, and put your business first; the future will thank you for it. This is your sign to remember that not all breakups are bad, right?

The Mane Attraction

In an industry where first impressions matter, a strong marketing presence is essential for salons to establish their identity and thrive. This month, we hear from Brayden Beavis, owner of Your Salon Support, to learn how effective marketing strategies not only showcase a salon’s unique services and expertise but also build brand loyalty and trust.

If you want to be the best, you need a marketing plan. Without one, even the best salons will fall behind, and you know what’s scarier? You see this all the time! Remember that cult hit salon that was where everyone who was anyone would go for their weekly blow-dry’s? And then all of a sudden - poof - the sparkle fizzled out. Well, a marketing plan helps you keep that spark alive.

First off, a marketing plan gives you consistency, and let’s be real, consistency is key. It ensures your brand is showing up where it needs to be - whether that’s on social media, your website, or even in how your team talks about promotions in the salon. When your messaging is all over the place, clients notice, and not in a good way. But with a plan, you’ve got a cohesive story that reinforces your brand every time someone scrolls past your posts or walks through your doors.

Let’s talk about your clients for a minute, new and existing. Sure, attracting new clients is great, but what about the ones who already love you? A marketing plan helps you keep them around longer by building loyalty. Think of email campaigns that remind them about your latest treatments or promotions that make them feel like VIPs. It’s all about staying on their radar, so when they’re due for a cut or colour, your salon is the first place they think of.

Then there’s the numbers game. A marketing plan gives you goals. Real, measurable goals. Instead of hoping people book more appointments or crossing your fingers that a promo works, you’ll know exactly what’s happening. Tracking your campaigns lets you see

what’s working, what’s not, and where to tweak things. Data-driven decisions, honey! No more guessing games.

So, how do you actually start making this magic happen? First, figure out who your target clients are. Are you aiming for busy professionals, or maybe a younger crowd looking for that Instagrammable balayage? Once you’ve nailed down your audience, set some clear goals—maybe you want to boost appointments by 20%

or launch a new service. Next, pick your channels. Social media? Definitely. Email marketing? Yes, please. And don’t forget local partnerships with other businesses.

Then, map it all out. Create a content calendar that keeps you organised, consistent, andstrategic. And remember—this plan isn’t set in stone. Still stuck? Check out our Industry Famous Workshop where we go through it all for you.

Top Tips!

Made by nail techs for nail techs, we hear how CJP Speed Tips have revolutionised the world of nail extensions, taking away all the usual hassle and stress associated with applying full-coverage soft gel tips.

Introducing CJP Speed Tips (soft gel full cover), designed to improve the process of making soft gel tips for all nail technicians through a meticulous planning and design process aimed at addressing common issues experienced by nail technicians.

The concept of full-coverage soft gel tips has always been appealing, but the traditional application methods involving gel can be cumbersome and timeconsuming. Applying too much or too little gel leads to air bubbles or excess gel curing around the cuticle area and behind the free edge. Recognising this challenge, the creators of CJP Speed Tips took it upon themselves to find a better solution. After two years of dedicated work, they developed a dualcure glue that simplifies the application process significantly. With this glue, users can easily attach the tips securely and then, once secured, cure them under a lamp for a flawless finish.

One of the key advantages of CJP Speed Tips is their soft and flexible nature, combined with a wide range of size options (15 sizes available). This ensures that users can find the perfect fit for each nail shape and size, eliminating the need for extensive shaping or customization. Additionally, once the tips are securely attached and cured, they provide a durable base for further gel application, eliminating the hassle of sculpting the perfect shape from scratch.

To enhance the durability of the tips, users can apply a coat of CJP Rubber IT over the top before proceeding with their desired CJP gel polish. This additional step of Rubber IT helps to create long-lasting extensions that maintain their shape and integrity over time. The inclusion of a specialized Tip Etcher for preparing the underneath surface of the tip adds another level of convenience and efficiency to the

application process, saving time having to etch the underside of the nail tip. With CJP Speed Tips, nail technicians can now create fast extensions with ease and speed, cutting down the application time significantly. The availability of refill bags for every size ensures that users can conveniently replenish their stock of popular sizes without having to purchase full boxes repeatedly. Moreover, the soft gel material used in the tips allows for easy soaking or infilling, providing flexibility in maintenance and removal options.

Directions for use:

• Size tips and save time etching by applying our “Tip Etch” to the underneath of the nail tip to ensure correct preparation.

• Apply a blob of CJP Dual Glue to the tip and hold it down to ensure a tight bond with no air bubbles. Once you have attached all 10 nails, cure each hand for 60 seconds.

• Gently etch the tip surface with a file (don’t use the tip etcher) and apply a coat of Rubber IT, then cure. You can then apply your chosen C Jel P shade.

• Enjoy creating nail extensions with ease and speed.

The application process for CJP Speed Tips is straightforward and user-friendly, with clear directions of use provided for optimal results. By following the recommended steps, including sizing tips, applying the dual glue, etching the underside of the tip, and finishing with Rubber IT and gel polish, users can achieve flawless nail extensions effortlessly.

In summary, CJP Speed Tips (soft gel full cover) represent a gamechanging innovation in the field of nail enhancements, offering a hassle-free and efficient solution for creating stunning extensions in less time. With their user-friendly design, durability, and versatility, these tips are set to become a must-have product for anyone looking to achieve professional-looking nail extensions quickly and easily. Less stress and less mess all around!

A Fresh Take on Aesthetics

This month, we sat down with Steph Archibald, the owner and founder of Aesthetics Now, to discuss her inspiring journey from personal insecurities to becoming a leader in non-surgical aesthetic treatments.

Having spent years feeling insecure about her own nose, Steph understands how subtle tweaks with filler can significantly impact selfconfidence. Motivated by her personal experience, Steph set out to become an expert in helping others overcome their insecurities through non-surgical alternatives. Recognising that traditional surgery isn’t always feasible for everyone due to its cost and recovery time. Understanding the irreversible nature of traditional surgery and the mental impact of such a permanent change, Steph advocates for non-surgical alternatives like fillers. Unlike surgery, which once done cannot be reversed, fillers offer the flexibility to be adjusted or dissolved if a client changes their mind. This makes non-surgical options a wise first step for those hesitant about making a lifetime change.

Driven by a commitment to natural beauty and safety, Steph has trained extensively in profile balancing and liquid rhinoplasties. As she explains, “My approach is all about helping clients feel more confident while ensuring they still look like themselves.”

At Aesthetics Now, advanced ultrasound technology enables precise, guided treatments. This allows Steph to reshape noses without surgery, placing filler with incredible accuracy to enhance natural contours and maintain the highest safety standards.

Facial harmony is at the core of her practice. Steph customises each treatment to suit individual anatomy, ensuring that every technique enhances your unique features. This approach delivers results that are natural and

balanced, helping you look and feel like your best self. As Steph notes, “My goal is to enhance what makes you unique, helping you feel confident and look your absolute best while staying true to yourself.”

In an industry where many keep their techniques to themselves, Steph stands out by sharing her expertise openly. At Aesthetics Now Academy, she offers

comprehensive training in ultrasound technology, liquid rhinoplasty, and profile balancing. Empowering practitioners at all levels to achieve the safest and most natural results. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to advance your skills, the Aesthetics Now Academy can help you.

Is The Customer Always Right?

Setting boundaries and sticking to them are vital in all areas of salon life, but this is always easier said than done! We hear from Maddi Cook, founder of Boss Your Salon on how to maintain boundaries and deal with clients who are make you feel increasingly anxious.

We’ve all been there, a notification pings on your phone and you glance at the name. You haven’t even read the message but your body fills with dread. What will it be this time? Nit-picking about something is not quite right? Another last-minute reschedule? A guilt trip about why they must have an evening appointment this week… but also can’t pay you until a week tomorrow?

‘The customer is always right’, or so they say. But when you run your own business where you often enter into longterm client service provider relationships, then it’s imperative that you both feel okay in each other’s presence.

So why do we struggle with feelings of anxiety when it comes to certain clients, and what can we do about it?

Often, feelings of guilt come up when

clients push our boundaries. This might look like asking to book in after hours, cancelling at the last minute, or asking to pay after their visit. Yes, these can all feel awkward, especially for the seasoned people-pleaser, but the great news is that these are easily solvable.

Systems are your friend when it comes to protecting your peace. That could be having an online booking site to direct all bookings to, saving you the potentially awkward conversations around pricing, policies, and availability. Or you could have published policies in your Instagram highlights, or an automated message response that points people to your FAQ page or booking link.

For those clients who just make you feel anxious for other reasons? Firstly, think about the story you’re telling yourself about them and their intentions.

Studies show that we’re only about 20% accurate when it comes to what we believe about other people and their behaviours. One thing I like to think is, ‘If I were to be generous with their intentions, what would that look like?’. It’s not about being a pushover or trampling our own boundaries, but does them asking about your prices really mean they don’t value you or your work? Or could they just be mindful about their own personal budget?

If they still make you uncomfortable once you reframe this thought process and you’ve implemented and stuck to good boundaries, then remember that you’re allowed to cut ties if that relationship no longer feels okay.

It’s your business, and you don’t have to serve anyone who makes you feel anxious.

Relaxation Station

After taking social media by storm, the Japanese head spa has continued to surge in popularity with a focus on deeply nourishing and cleansing the scalp. We hear from hair colourist and stylist Carley Bayne on the benefits of this being a salon-based service and adding it to your treatment offerings.

The Japanese head spa is the ultimate treatment of the moment, combining relaxation and therapeutic benefits for your clients hair and scalp. Most people would say their favourite part of a hair appointment is the shampoo experience, with the soothing sensation of having their hair washed. Now imagine taking that feeling to a whole new level and extending it for over an hour! This is exactly what a Japanese head spa will offer, and more...

The treatment consists of multiple luxurious steps, each designed to pamper you while promoting the health of your scalp and hair. From hair playing and brushing to scalp exfoliation, the process also includes a deeply relaxing head, neck, arm, and hand massage. The treatment is completed with a nourishing hair mask, steam therapy, and what the service is best known for - the signature waterfall rinse. This unique technique involves gently cascading water over the

scalp, which not only feels wonderful but also helps improve circulation, making the whole experience deeply restorative.

At the heart of this treatment is scalp stimulation, aimed at increasing blood flow to the hair follicles to promote hair growth. The detoxifying and exfoliating process clears away any buildup and impurities on the scalp, creating a healthy environment for hair to thrive. After all, a healthy scalp is key to maintaining strong, beautiful hair.

Carley shared, “We’ve also developed a specialised scalp concerns package that offers targeted treatments for issues like hair loss, dandruff, psoriasis, and excessive oil production. This is where the Japanese head spa works hand-inhand with being in a professional hair salon. As hairdressers, we see these concerns daily. Instead of referring clients to a dermatologist or trichologist, we can now offer in-house treatments to address these conditions directly, with

the benefit of already understanding their hair history.”

“Some clients may feel apprehensive or even embarrassed about having their scalp analysed, especially when using a magnifying camera that reveals every detail. However, because we have already established trust with our clients through regular hair appointments, we’re able to put them at ease and make the process as comfortable as possible.”.

For scalp conditions like dandruff or psoriasis, we recommend working closely with clients over the course of a few months. Typically, we would suggest scheduling a series of four sessions, with one treatment each month.

As hairdressers, we’re often the only ones who truly know what is hidden beneath our clients hair. With the Japanese head spa, we can help our clients feel truly confident and comfortable with both their scalp and hair.

The Magic of Bonding Treatments

As the warm, sunny days of summer fade into memory, clients are left with the tangible effects of sun soaked adventures – damaged, brittle, and lacklustre hair. This is where bonding treatments really come into their own. Let’s dive into why the Uberliss Bond System stands out as a postsummer saviour for clients.

Understanding the Damage

Summer is a challenging season for hair. The combination of UV rays, saltwater, chlorine, and heat can strip away moisture and weaken the hair’s structure.

• Dryness and brittleness occur when the sun’s UV rays break down hair proteins and moisture, resulting in dry, brittle strands prone to breakage.

• UV exposure and frequent washing can cause coloured hair to fade and lose its vibrancy.

• Constant exposure to heat and harsh elements can lead to split ends and hair fragility.

A Hair Revival Strategy

Bonding treatments have revolutionised the haircare industry by addressing damage at a molecular level. These treatments work by rebuilding the

broken disulfide bonds in the hair shaft, which is crucial for maintaining hair’s strength and integrity. By repairing the hair’s internal structure, bonding treatments restore strength and resilience, retain moisture, combat dryness, reduce frizz, and preserve hair colour, keeping it vibrant for longer.

The Uberliss Bond System: A Game Changer for Hairdressers

Among the various bonding treatments available, the Uberliss Bond System is a standout for several reasons. It has gained acclaim for its efficacy and reliability, making it a favourite among hairdressers aiming to restore their clients’ hair post-summer. What’s more, the Uberliss Bond System is suitable for all hair types, including curly and coily hair. Offering a bonding service for a variety of clients.

The Uberliss Bond System features sub-micron technology that penetrates the hair cortex to rebuild and protect hair bonds. This advanced technology ensures superior repair and protection. The system includes a Bond Regenerator, Bond Sustainer, and Bond Amplifier, offering a holistic approach to hair care that repairs, strengthens, and maintains hair health.

Specifically designed to work well with coloured hair, the Uberliss Bond System helps maintain and enhance colour vibrancy, making it perfect for postsummer revival. Whether used during the colouring process or as a standalone treatment, the Uberliss Bond System provides consistent and impressive results, making it a versatile tool in a hairdresser’s arsenal.

Client Satisfaction

For hairdressers, client satisfaction is paramount. The Uberliss Bond System not only repairs and revives hair but also enhances the overall salon experience by delivering noticeable, long-lasting results. Clients leave the salon with healthier, shinier, and stronger hair, leading to higher satisfaction and loyalty.

Embrace the Post-Summer Revival

As we transition from summer to the cooler months, it’s essential to address the toll that the sun and elements have taken on our clients’ hair. For hairdressers, it’s an invaluable tool that ensures clients can keep enjoying healthy, beautiful hair, season after season.
