The Amazing Tent Company
Amazing solutions Well known and respected in the festival and live event industries, The Amazing Tent Company (ATC) is now proactively expanding its service to the corporate event industry; covering all events from conferences and exhibitions to product launches and trade stands
T
he UEFA Champions League Festival 2013 was the first major event to come to the Olympic Park, the home of London 2012, since the Games. The Amazing Tent Company (ATC) was asked to provide a venue for a football museum, an environment where football fans could experience a wealth of football memorabilia from tournaments past and present. ATC’s client required a large, visually exciting structure that had to be light proof, as the exhibition displaying photographs and football memorabilia required a really dark display environment. Step forward the S5000 TriSpan; a 1,450 square metre marquee made out of opaque material and part of ATC’s SaddleSpan range of marquees. The great looking tent was the ideal solution for the exhibition.
Challenging conditions Finding the perfect structure was easy but the challenges did not stop there. Due to the event site’s sloping ground, the TriSpan had to be built on a raised deck. Using stakes to anchor the structure securely to the ground was not an option due to the multitude of underground services criss-crossing the site. The location was also in a notoriously windy part of London.
The solution A purpose-built deck was shipped over from Germany and was designed to exactly fit the unusual shape of the TriSpan. The deck needed to be as low as possible, which meant sourcing a variety of steel and concrete ballast to fit under the 600mm high deck. Over 100 tonnes of ballast was used to anchor the structure to its chosen position. The great British weather was not playing ball on the day the tent was due to be winched into position. As with any tent, high
winds can make installation impossible. Although the TriSpan can withstand high winds once erected, ATC puts safety first. Fortunately, using The Amazing Tent Company’s favourite app “WeatherPro”, the team managed to identify and schedule a window of opportunity at 4pm when the winds were due to die down. At 16:10, the winds dropped to 10mph as predicted. ATC winched the TriSpan into position straight onto the deck and it fitted perfectly. Another “Amazing” job completed on time and on budget.
Got it covered The Amazing Tent Company loves a challenge, and the combination of a versatile collection of tents with a great problem solving team means the company can rise to any event and any special occasion. Whatever your event plans, be it a conference, exhibition, trade show, product launch, sporting event, festival or concert, don’t let the British weather wipe it out – The Amazing Tent Company will cover and create every conceivable venue and event space you require. Visit www.amazingtent.co.uk or call the team on 01453 807431 for more information.

Losberger
Holding on to high standards Some people have called them “tent snobs” so Losberger invites you to judge for yourself. Discover what makes Losberger tick, as The Temporary Structure Guide takes five minutes with Nick Edwards, Managing Director of Losberger So why should an organiser choose Losberger over other suppliers?

It’s simple – because we are different. Our UK team is made up of a small group of key individuals, each equipped with the skill, dedication and passion required to offer you the very best level of customer service and product knowledge. Each of our projects are carefully managed from concept through to completion, by a dedicated point of contact who understands that you require more than just a white box with four walls. We believe that every event is unique, and that is why we always aim to offer our customers something different – not just an “off the shelf” solution.
Where do you stand on quality? We believe that quality service doesn’t just stop with the project management team, it extends to our warehouse management and site crew too – all of whom have been formally trained in-house to the highest standards. Their knowledge of the equipment and managing client expectations throughout the build process is unrivalled. That is just one of the reasons why
we have been entrusted to work within the confines of some of London’s most challenging locations – including treasured Grade 1 listed buildings. All of our structures are designed and built to comply with industry standard BSEN 13782, which means you can rest assured that your structure conforms to the highest level of safety and design, verified by an independent structural engineer. It goes without saying that our equipment is always meticulously maintained and carefully packaged during transportation to and from site, with all structures and interiors installed by the same crew, safeguarding quality at every stage.
Is Losberger cheap? The short answer is no – but we are competitive. Our bespoke interiors are manufactured in-house and are fully integrated to fit seamlessly within our structures, so we are able to offer a luxury finish for less than you might expect. Our design team has developed a range of innovative fittings and finishes which include opening windows, split level floors and internal soundproofing and insulation solutions, in addition to the range of custom interiors and ceiling linings that we are renowned for.

GL events Owen Brown
Drawing on experience One hundred years of temporary structures in an ever-changing industry and GL events Owen Brown continues to make history
h
ether it is erecting its huge triple deck VIP hospitality facility at Royal Ascot or providing upmarket venues for brands’ experiential marketing campaigns, Owen Brown is one of the most active suppliers working in the UK events industry today. Founded 100 years ago, the company supplies the highest quality temporary structures to major events across the sporting and cultural spectrum, including Royal Ascot, the Royal International Air Tattoo and the F1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Last year it achieved its greatest-ever triumph when, as part of the GL events Consortium, it provided around 166,000 square metres of temporary structures to the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games. One year on, Owen Brown is building on the experience by seeking new markets overseas, investing heavily in staff training and supplying cutting-edge temporary structures which, just 12 months ago, were at the heart of the greatest show on earth. The company’s story begins in Loughborough, Leicestershire, where Owen Brown began selling ropes, tarpaulins and netting to local farmers. Following the Second World War, the firm expanded the marquee hire side of the business and in 1950 supplied six beer tents to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone – a somewhat smaller undertaking than today’s provision! It also began to innovate, first replacing its canvas products with PVC and later phasing out wooden poles in favour of aluminium frames. More industry-firsts followed, including the introduction of hard wall panels, new roof profiles and, in 2008, its ground-
breaking Absolute range of temporary structures. It also gained the honour, thanks to its services at Buckingham Palace, of being granted the Royal Warrant for supplying temporary structures to Her Majesty the Queen. Its centenary year has been one of more change and development. Reflecting a closer working relationship between Owen Brown and its sister companies, GL events Snowdens and GL events Slick Seating, all three companies are now led by managing director, Scott Hayward. Not only will closer ties help Owen Brown explore new markets but the move will benefit event organisers by offering them a “one-stop-shop” to reduce time and cost. This approach already works well at Royal Ascot, where Owen Brown is the principal contractor, supplying all the temporary structures and ancillary items, while Slick Seating provides a series of grandstands. Owen Brown has also invested heavily in staff training and recently its on-site operations managers have undergone IOSH Managing Safely courses to meet the industry’s ever-more stringent health and safety demands. All in all, 2013 has been a fitting year in which to celebrate a centenary, and one which Hayward says sees Owen Brown enter its second century on a high. He explained: “I would love to know what Mr Brown would make of the company now. Not only are we still at the forefront of the industry, we are continuing to serve the UK’s top events and are proven at supplying major sporting events anywhere in the world. “When you consider all that was started by a man selling ropes and tents in Loughborough, it’s quite incredible.”

Accio Group
Cooking up a storm Accio Group sets the standard in structural design for unique events
I
t’s been another “eventful” year all round for Accio Group, with event projects for Audi Polo, Gatcombe Horse Trials, several Ministry of Defence events and a number of exclusive private functions for clients looking for exceptional service and creativity. Accio Events Division is renowned for its ability to create unique event experiences, created with inspired thinking and delivered with rigorous project management. It certainly knows how to create the “wow” factor and has been responsible for designing some truly breath-taking spaces and event structures. When it comes to larger structures, Accio is pioneering the use of load-bearing, fully demountable structures in place of traditional permanent structures which impact heavily on the environment; often involving substantial ground works and concrete foundations. Its first task is to establish if data gathered from extensive geo-technical surveys supports the use of loadbearing platforms. If so, Accio believes there is absolutely no reason to rush towards excavation. In the spring of 2013, Accio demonstrated this expertise with the creation of a unique, purpose built structure for Sainsbury’s. The 720 square metre, two-storey unit housed a state-of-the-art TV production studio used to make the What’s Cooking? From the Sainsbury’s Kitchen show for Channel 4. The branded TV cookery show was filmed in front of a live audience and broadcasted daily for 13 weeks from the studio located at a Sainsbury’s store in north London. A second series of this innovative and highly successful TV show is due to be commissioned for 2014. The studio structure was complete and handed over for technical fit-out in two weeks from the Accio team arriving on-site and was ready for broadcast just two weeks later. This is a great example of Accio’s unrivalled expertise in creating structures with exceptional sustainability credentials. The demountable build approach meant there was no need to break up the car park surfaces and no residual damage to the environment when the structure was removed and recycled.
As clients would expect from an organisation with Accio’s reputation for quality and service, the company sailed through the rigorous processes of the British Assessment Bureau to maintain their ISO 9001 and 1401 accreditations. Uniquely, Accio Group is also a Safe Contractor and CHAS accredited organisation and these credentials, combined with the individual professional qualifications of the event team puts Accio Group out in front when it comes to operational skills and management processes. Managing director Stephen Casey is thrilled that the company commitment to being “outstanding, from the ground up” is reflected in the processes and procedures and is looking forward to delivering on this throughout 2013 and 2014. He observes: “Event organisers should ensure all event and structural design partners can demonstrate similar quality standards and environmental credentials when tendering for work.” Not content to rest on its laurels, Accio Group added worldclass structural design expertise to its project team during 2013 with the appointment of Adrian Parsons as design manager. Parsons spent the majority of 2012 designing and project managing temporary structure installations for the Olympic Games, including the 10,000 square metre equestrian platform at Greenwich Park, along with badminton and gymnastics tournament decks at Wembley. Also joining the team full time in 2013, cost manager Martin Oliver brings over 25 years of quantity surveying skills to the structures and events divisions to enhance the budgeting and cost control functions which clients find invaluable. Collectively then, and with a forecasted turnover in excess of £6 million for 2013, Accio Group is well placed to build on its unrivalled position in structural design and event solutions and is looking forward to delivering more sustainable, elite structures for environmentally aware clients in 2014.

Gearhouse In2Structures
Creative curves Gearhouse In2Structures has launched a Midi Dome structure, which has been designed specifically to cater for events of up to 500
L
eading South African specialist design and manufacturing company, Gearhouse In2Structures has been producing custom designed, portable, fabric covered “spaces” or dome structures for hire or sale for almost a decade. It has recently launched the latest in the range, the Midi Dome. These structures are all locally designed and manufactured, apart from the Duraskin outer fabric component (which is imported from Verseidag in Germany) and are constructed from high tensile, arched steel truss sections, which are then covered in weatherproof “skins”. The construction method is unique in that the covering is separate and raised above the metal trussing to allow easy access for rigging. Skins are available in grey/black, white or transparent PVC and are installed using the Keder method of drawing Duraskin through aluminium extrusions to ensure a watertight seal. The covering provides a complete blackout, if necessary. A Teflon coating inside and out makes the surfaces easy to clean and the outer coverings provide outdoor billboards for bespoke branding. These highly versatile structures can be transformed and configured according to the show or event and the client’s requirements. Size and capacity can be adjusted by adding or subtracting additional “bays” along the length. The structures are supported by trusses anchored directly into the ground and come with full structural certification in all configurations. The current range of structures is distinguished by width, ranging between 20 metres and 36 metres wide with a load bearing capacity of 1,500 – 3,000 kg UDL per arch respectively and a wind speed safety rating of 100-120km per hour. The latest in the range is the 16-metre wide Midi Dome structure, which has been designed specifically to cater for the smaller event and offers an upmarket alternative to marquee venues for capacities of around 300 (banquet-style) to 504 (cinema) with stage area. All structures are purpose-built and have the option of automated doors, emergency exits and air-conditioning for summer or winter as well as foyers, kitchens, dressing rooms etc.
In2structures consider all related services such as site layout of kitchens, ablutions, tensile surround structures, landscaping and parking facilities in conjunction with the client’s architects or directly. It can also advise or partner with local suppliers regarding installation of additionals such as air conditioning, working/safety lights and emergency signage internally. In2Structures’ domes have proved successful internationally, and have been exported for use in Abu Dhabi and Dubai (UAE) as multipurpose venues and to Azerbaijan as an ice rink. The company is extending its reach into new markets with a unique product that has a wide range of uses. In Africa, the dome structures have been used mainly to host events, conferences and international summits but they also have a host of other possible uses across the industrial (warehousing, temporary buildings for mining/forestry/ exploration in remote areas), community (humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, churches, schools, military operations), hospitality (gaming, entertainment venues) and commercial (retail, automotive) sectors. Depending on stock and your requirements for entrances and finishes, structures can be ready for shipping within a few weeks. With the correct preparation of the site, a complete installation can be done within seven to 14 days. Visit www.in2structures.co.za for more information.

Fews Marquees
Fews Marquees has a wide range of contemporary structures to suit a multitude of events
T
o stand out from the crowd, you need to do it in style. The Fews Premium Range of temporary structures brings together style and substance, providing largescale, luxury spaces for events, launches, parties and conferences as well as fabulous weddings. Based in Worcestershire, Fews Marquees has grown consistently over the years and made a significant investment in 2012 to meet the needs of existing customers and new corporate clients, with the purchase of Roder HTS Premium structures. This is the latest in temporary structure engineering, with much improved thermal efficiency; a stylish curved roof; a ring beam cassette floor with phenolic timber boards; and optional pillow-roofs for increased thermal properties and noise-reduction. The new range of aluminium clearspan structures is available in 10m, 15m, 20m or 25m widths so is ideally suited to large-scale weddings, parties, exhibitions, hospitality events and product launches. Although only a small company, Fews Marquees is family owned and operated. That brings with it a determination to deliver the best possible customer service, to maintain its excellent reputation for making every event run smoothly. This came to fruition when the firm was crowned national winners at the 2013 Wedding Industry Awards for Best Marquee Provider.

Ian Few, managing director of Fews Marquees, is hands-on, and has created a team of people who are very professional about what they do. He explained: “From the initial contact with the office and sales team, to the specialist staff who bring the structure to life, the team is committed to making everyone’s event go exactly to plan.” Providing national coverage from the central warehouse and offices in the Midlands and a proven track-record of delivering temporary structures – on a short or long-term basis – for some of the UK’s finest organisations, the firm is well-placed to support your next event. Fews Marquees can also supplement your event with a huge range of 3m, 6m, 9m, 12m and 15m clearspan marquees, 3m, 5m and 6m Pagodas, lighting and furnishings as well as power and heating. From enquiry through to completion, you will be looked after by the experienced UK events team, ensuring no detail is overlooked and any unforeseen problems are dealt with efficiently.
Showplace
Flexible spaces Showplace is expanding its events and temporary structures business and wishes to shout about it from the roof tops

fter 25 years of delivering a diverse range of events from WRGB to ice rinks, Showplace has now divided the business into three different divisions – temporary structures, roadshow and event trailers and exhibition stands. Such is the depth of knowledge within the group there is now a clear requirement from customers to look after all their event and exhibition needs throughout the year. Will Stuart, sales director at Showplace and one of the founding members, says: “Because of the turnkey event service now provided by Showplace with its three divisions, we are working extensively within the European market from as far north as Norway, down to the southern tip of Italy. There are even plans to expand into the US market next year.” Showplace has always been involved with different types of structures, from the early days when it used some French structures called Dalos, to 25 years later when it launched its new range of modular structures called Modas. The past two years have been spent developing this range with one of its partners and was launched last year with great feedback from all the events attended. “We have even had clients instructing their agencies to specifically book them for different product launches,” continues Stuart. “Being able to work with our production company and help design every aspect of the new range has enabled us to add a lot of design features that are unique to the Modas range.” The new modular system has allowed the company to increase its presence in the competitive world of marquees and modular buildings. The Modas come with an integrated ring beam floor system as well as an increased wall height. This provides a more flexible space within the structure. Starting from as small as 6m x 6m, the modular design means that the structures can be built onto each other to create a larger space and in various forms or shapes. The structures also have a glass
and solid walling system as well as optional extras such as bifolding and electrical doors, interior slat walling, coloured roofs, printed roofs and walls to create a custom look. Six different agencies have already used the Showplace structures this year, as well as the organisers of the new PLANTWORX show at Stoneleigh Park – Showplace supplied a range of terrace structures for the organisers to sell on with 100 per cent occupancy achieved. One of the main strengths of the Showplace team is its ability to provide a full turnkey service for its clients. At the heart of the company is the knowledge that the structure provided is a reflection of the client’s image, and an extension of the business that leaves the audience with a permanent impression.

Attwoolls
Attwoolls has a wealth of experience in the events and marquee industry
J
ohn Attwooll & Co Ltd was originally founded by John Attwooll in 1936. Over the years it has expanded into one of the largest marquee and structure hire and manufacturing companies in the UK. During this expansion, it has maintained a reputation as a caring company, where each customer is given the best personal attention down to the last and finest detail. It is pleased to have had long relationships starting in the 60’s with Cheltenham Racecourse, Badminton Horse Trials and The Malvern Showground, supplying marquees, furniture and framed pavilions to each. In 1972 the company designed and introduced the first hospitality chalets to Cheltenham, Aintree and Chester Racecourses, providing private dining facilities for groups of guests in one structure. This format is now seen in every major sporting event throughout the UK and Europe, Clearspan frame tents were designed in-house and added to Attwoolls hire stock in 1985 starting with 18-metre wide and, in 1988, the HI-LUX double deck was launched for the Cheltenham Gold Cup Festival. The complete range of frame tents was competed in 1990 – widths now span from three-metres to 30-metres wide. Today, the company has a wealth of clients and continue to support many prestige events. Its equipment can be seen at all manner of agricultural shows around the country including Royal Cornwall, Royal Welsh, South of England, Dorset, Kent and North Devon, also at many other annual events, Henley Regatta, Goodwood Festival, Cowes, Glastonbury and Cheltenham Festival. All of the company’s marquees and structures are manufactured in-house and Attwoolls also has a wide range of marquees and pavilion for general sale. Medical slings, tarpaulins, trailer covers, vehicle side curtains, roll over sheets,
module covers, bespoke covers and debris nets can also be produced ad purchased. Attwoolls has a wide cross-section of customers working in diverse sectors of industry. These include Autorestore, Biffa Waste, Cemex, McLaren Racing, Honda, Unilever, Unite Modular Solution, and Wincanton Distribution together with other leading names in the transport and medical supplies industry. The production facility is also the principal supplier of equipment to the Hire Department and a retail shop selling PVC material, rope, ratchets and hire of lorry sheets. The Retail Camping shop was opened in 1960, but has now expanded to hold the largest indoor display of erected camping tents in the area. The shop stocks Vango Coleman, Khyam, Outwell and Cabanon and also a range of Attwoolls own design camping tents. With a large selection of camping accessories including sleeping bags, stoves, chairs, tables and kitchen utensils. All displayed in a huge 3,500 square metre superstore at Whitminster. The company also has its own Ski Shop stocking all the top brands of Skis, Salamon, Rossignol, Head and Dynastar, also snowboards, boots and a full range of accessories for the winter season, and wet suits and canoes for the summer. Production Freight
Forward thinkers Have you considered the logistical challenges of managing large-scale events?
P

roduction Freight has for 20 years facilitated the international movement of equipment for panEuropean live events, global sporting occasions and the touring entertainment industry, providing a full door to site supply chain with bespoke trucking, air freight and ocean freight services. John Burrows, the company’s business development director, explains: “We appreciate that a live event comes in many shapes and sizes, as does the type and amount of equipment needed to produce a memorable occasion. Moving your equipment around the globe should not be feared, as it’s a service that can be tailored to suit your specific requirements, specific budgets and specific timeframes.” Obviously the temporary structure market is ideally suited for events that primarily happen during the months of April and October in the UK and Europe. This has traditionally meant that during the winter months the structures themselves generally aren’t earning their owners much money. Continues Burrows: “What we’ve seen in recent years is that our more adventurous clients have taken the initiative to search further afield for new markets, which has resulted in many of them tapping into a vibrant marketplace in the Southern Hemisphere during the months of October to March. “You can for example move a 40-foot ocean container into Capetown and have your structure there within three weeks, continuing with South Africa as an example, you can use the ATA

Carnet system to avoid any overseas governmental imposed duty and taxes,” adds Burrows. Working in close partnership with its clients, Production Freight is able to provide a timeframe and budget for when the equipment will be required to leave the UK and when it can be returned so that customers can maintain their contractual obligations to their European client base. “We spend a lot of time researching and communicating with our overseas partners to ensure we choose the most efficient and cost effective means of temporarily importing the equipment and ensuring that the correct documentation is in place in advance of the shipments arrival,” says Burrows. “This ensures a swift customs clearance and delivery to site and there’s always our local overseas contact as well as one of our UK team on hand 24/7 to assist from either side.” According to Burrows, there has been a big increase in the use of modular or temporary structure being more widely used to stage shows or hospitality areas in sporting events such as golf tournaments, Formula One and the Americas Cup. Production Freight’s team approaches every event as if it were the only event of its kind so everything is bespoke and nothing is left to chance. You can outsource all or part of your logistics planning to Production Freight with confidence, knowing that its experienced team will meticulously cover every detail. Its products are fitted by its own in-house trained carpet fitters who know what high standards are required and have faced the most challenging and difficult situations over the years. Floorex has been involved in many prestigious events such as major golf championships including successive Ryder Cups since 1987 up to the most recent and memorable one a stone’s throw from its premises at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, South Wales. More recently it has been involved in Royal Ascot, Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford, Gloucestershire. In fact, if your company is involved in any of these projects Floorex can give you favourable rates if it is able to accommodate your build dates with when it is already on-site. Floorex is also an ESSA member, which guarantees the company’s commitment to service and quality
Recycling and sustainability Floorex realise how important recycling and sustainability is to the events industry and offers a unique recycling programme. After each event, the carpet comes back to Floorex’s warehouse and is thoroughly inspected, cleaned, repaired and
then categorised into either exhibition/outdoor event re-use, or the carpet is cut into room-sized remnants, which are sold off through its retail outlet. Thousands of square metres of carpet that comes back from an indoor exhibition or conference – sometimes the carpet has been down only 24 hours – can be cleaned and repaired and is then offered to customers at a vastly reduced price, which suits many customers on a budget or whose event does not need new carpet every time. Prices supplied, fitted and removed start from £1.45 per square metres + VAT (depending on size and location). Finally, once it has no further exhibition or event use, the floor covering can be recycled into polyprop pellets and made into products such as flowerpots or bottles or most recently scaffolding planks, decking and fencing. Visit www.tilon.co.uk for more interesting information. Floorex also has a range of contract/vinyl products if you need new floor coverings for your office.
