Looking Fetching, Feeling Pawsome Ensuring that dogs look their best should begin with the interior, not the exterior. If Bailey is suffering from dry itchy skin, moulting, weight problems or a smelly coat then even the most conscientious grooming efforts can prove redundant. So, what are the warning signs? And how can owners take measures to ensure that their pooch stays as healthy as possible? An Itch That They Can’t Scratch Angry red marks, persistent scratching and lumps and bumps… Sound familiar? Complaints of itchy skin are one of the most common dog ailments reported at the vets. The majority of the time, itchy skin problems are the result of a build-up of toxic waste in the body caused by poor nutrition. The Issue of Moulting Picture the scene: Bailey has been to the groomers and is smelling lovely, but here’s the thing, he can’t stop moulting. We’re not talking about seasonal shedding which is normal. We’re talking about persistent moulting. According to John, diet is the likely culprit. The issue is worse with dogs and 78% of vets have noticed a sharp increase in pet obesity over the last 2 years. Despite this, many owners are none the wiser that their prized pooch could do with a bit of reining in. In fact, the subject has become a bit of an industry taboo with many vets choosing not to mention the problem in consultations for fear of offending their clients. Perhaps one of the biggest problems is that dog owners simply don’t realise their pet is overweight. So, how can you identify whether or not your pet is on the tubby side? The easiest way to tell is by feeling the ribcage. The ribs should be easily and clearly felt with little flesh between the

Nutritional Needs of a Senior Dog One of the key advances in companion animal nutrition came when nutritionists realised the different dietary needs dogs and cats have as they mature. This month the PFMA explain feeding the older dog. The Aging Process In terms of age grouping, a dog passes from ‘adult’ to ‘mature’ and then to ‘senior’ status during its life. Generally, maturity starts once a dog has reached the mid-point in life although in most cases the signs of ageing are unlikely to be visible. At 75-80% of their total life expectancy, dogs are considered ‘senior’ and the signs of ageing will have become more apparent. Larger dogs have a shorter lifespan than smaller dogs and therefore will age earlier than their smaller counterparts. Geriatric animals are at the older end of the aging spectrum and often experience more age-related health issues.

Normal aging and expected changes in ‘senior’ dogs • As dogs age, their metabolism (and energy levels) can slow down and their need for calories generally decreases, due to a loss of lean tissue mass and a gain in fat mass, which can lead to weight gain if the amount of food or diet fed is not adapted accordingly. • Senior dogs may show a drop in activity levels and 14 | Total Grooming Magazine

may sleep more. This could be down to a natural slow down or it could be as a result of arthritis or joint problems, which can be common in older dogs. Weight management is really important for addressing this. • The immune system may need some extra support. • Dental issues can pose a problem, particularly for older dogs making chewing more difficult. • The sense of smell and taste can become affected and as dogs depend very much on these senses, affected individuals may

eat less because their food may appear less tasty to them. • It is not uncommon for a senior dog to experience a decrease in appetite and it could be as a result of some of the above changes however, the first step is to rule out any underlying health issues with your veterinary surgeon. There are a number of health conditions more associated with old age for instance, kidney disease, arthritis, heart disease and cancer that may result in weight loss. Many veterinary practices run senior care programmes, which can help to pick up on any health issues at an early stage. As with every stage in life, nutrition can play a key role supporting a dog as he or she goes through these physiological changes.

Specially formulated diets for ‘senior’ dogs Not all mature or senior dogs are the same or have the same nutritional needs and your veterinary surgeon will be best placed to guide you. Broadly speaking senior dogs can be divided in to 2 categories from a nutritional perspective, those who have poor appetite and less efficient digestion and therefore need to have more food, then older dogs who continue eating at the normal rate but have a more sedentary lifestyle and therefore require less food. Here are some examples of how ‘mature’ and ‘senior’ diets can meet the needs of an older dog: • An older dog will need a wellbalanced diet that is generally lower in calories, and fat but higher in fibre. • Special dietary fibres can also be useful to help support gastrointestinal health. • Senior diets can have a softer texture and use highly digestible ingredients. • Research has shown that particular ingredients can help maintain mobility, for example, the omega 3s and ingredients like chondroitin and glucosamine. Many manufacturers will include these ingredients in their ‘mature’ and ‘senior’ formulations. • Recent research has shown that certain antioxidants and DHA, an omega 3 fatty acid, can be beneficial to senior dogs in terms of cognitive maintenance. The research[1] found that older dogs provided with a diet rich in antioxidants were able to complete difficult tasks and were less likely to suffer from age related behaviour[2]. The studies even found that dogs on this diet were also able to recognise family members more easily and retained greater agility. Many manufacturers use such antioxidants in their diets.

Tips to help with appetite loss The first step is to have a complete veterinary examination and to follow the feeding plan recommended by the vet’. There are some tips to encourage a dog to eat more:

• If the dog normally eats dry food, he/she may have a hard time chewing the larger kibbles. Try feeding a smaller kibble or moisten the food with warm water to make it easier to chew. • If a dog loses interest in dry food, adding warm water or a small amount of wet food may help. • Heating up wet pet food may also be appealing as this can release a stronger aroma but make sure there are no hot spots before serving. • Add other foods to increase the appeal. You may try adding a little water from canned tuna, canned dog food, a small amount of cooked chicken and broth, or cooked/boiled eggs to the food to make it more appealing. • Feed smaller amounts of food more often. By offering a small amount of food several times each day, your dog may actually increase his/her total daily intake. • Fresh drinking water should always be available and it’s a good idea to monitor water intake. Excessive drinking may be a sign of an underlying health issue.

Homemade diets, a viable alternative or cooking up trouble? For some owners providing home prepared meals for their pet is an appealing idea. Shopping, hand selecting the ingredients and preparing the meal seems a good way to show their love. The PFMA explains the pros and cons of cooking from scratch.

hilst this sounds straight forward enough, the reality is different and unless you have developed a meal plan with a dedicated veterinary nutritionist, there is a strong risk you won’t be providing the necessary nutrition. A dog for instance needs around 37 nutrients in his daily diet for healthy bodily function and a cat, over 40.

Most recipes for homemade diets are nutritionally deficient A study at the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine analysed 200 different recipes for home prepared dog foods. Recipes were selected from websites, veterinary text books, and pet care books. The findings highlighted that 95% of the recipes were deficient in at least one essential nutrient and 84% were lacking in multiple required nutrients. Whilst providing a nutritionally balanced diet from home is not impossible, these results show it is a complicated task with very little margin for error. Calorie control can also be difficult.

Expert formulated diets Most pet food products on the market are designed to provide total nutrition for pets. Such complete and balanced products contain the right balance of protein, fat, fibre and carbohydrates including the specific vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and amino acids. Balancing all of those nutrients is complex, but that work is the day in and day out responsibility of pet food 18 | Total Grooming Magazine

manufacturers. Members of the PFMA formulate their diets in line with the FEDIAF Nutritional Guidelines for Cats and Dogs . These guidelines detail the nutritional needs of cats and dogs at the varying life-stages from growth to senior and they are peer reviewed by independent veterinary nutrition experts throughout Europe. Providing a pet with a ‘complete’ pet food is akin to a person having their meals routinely put together by a human nutritionist.

Can I home cook occasionally? An occasional home prepared meal can be enjoyed by dog and owner alike. If it is ‘occasional’ it won’t interrupt the nutritional balance of the overall feeding regime but please be careful to

avoid foods that are toxic to pets.

Human foods to avoid Certain foods can be toxic for pets including: onions, garlic, raisins,

grapes, chocolate, avocados, certain nuts and xylitol-sweetened foods. Your pet’s nutrition is important for a healthy & happy life. PFMA’s Veterinary Nutrition team are on hand to help you understand all about pet food so that your pet gets optimum nutrition. An area we often get questions about is whether additives are used in pet food and what role they play, here PFMA helps to explain. Additives are used in both human and pet food to help ensure quality, safety, texture, consistency, appearance, odour or taste. Some additives are derived from naturally occurring materials (usually plants) and others are manufactured substances.

The use of additives in pet food is strictly regulated The pet food industry operates to stringent standards and complies with more than 50 pieces of legislation to produce pet foods of the highest quality and safety. As part of this, all prepared pet foods manufactured by members of the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association adhere strictly to the Animal Feed Regulations 2015. These regulations cover the use and labelling of additives in pet food and enforce EU legislation.

Additives are subject to a rigorous authorisation process The EU authorises additives on the grounds of safety, technical need and efficacy. The authorisation process is rigorous and additives are regularly reviewed. As part of this process, if safety requirements are not met the additives are not approved for use regardless of how technologically useful the particular additive might be.

Examples of the use of additives in pet food: Food safety and longevity Preservatives and antioxidants are two specific categories of additives that are very important for maintaining food safety as well as extending the shelf life of a product. Spoiled foods

if consumed carry the risk of food poisoning and both preservatives and antioxidants help prevent spoilage from bacterial contamination and stop fats from going rancid.

Benefits of antioxidants The use of antioxidants goes beyond maintaining food safety and shelf life. Over the years research has emerged highlighting the benefits of antioxidants. Some manufacturers may add nutritional antioxidants e.g. vitamins C & E to pet foods to help promote good health and combat free radical damage to the body.

For nutritional benefit As in human food, additives may be used, for example, to protect the nutritional values and goodness of a product or enhance the nutritional profile of a product so that it can deliver complete nutrition (e.g. the addition of vitamins, minerals, amino acids). Some nutrients are classified as additives and may be declared on packaging and under their common or technical names e.g. Vitamin C is as known as L-ascorbic acid. The use of such additives enables pet food manufacturers to produce products that are nutritionally complete and which meet the nutritional requirements of the pet.

Colours Colours are also sometimes used in pet foods. Generally, they are added to redress the natural variations in colour which arise from cooking the food in

the wide variety of ingredients used.

Are additives dangerous to pets? No. As mentioned previously, like with human foods, the use of additives in pet food is strictly regulated by the EU. The EU authorises additives on the grounds of safety, technical need and efficacy. The authorisation process is rigorous and food/pet food additives are regularly reviewed to ensure safety.

Are the additives in pet food linked with behavioural issues in pets? No. There is no proven scientific evidence currently available to suggest a link between behavioural problems in pets and additives in pet food (Case 2014 ). The most common causes of behavioural problems in pets include fear, inadequate early socialisation and training, and poor behavioural/ emotional husbandry. Professor Peter Neville (founding partner of the Centre of Applied Pet Ethology) stated that in over 25 years of veterinary referral behaviour practice he has never seen a single case of a behaviour problem in dogs that could be directly linked to additives in pet food or that could be verified in any form of physiological test.

This is often reflected in a slightly higher price than other premium ranges but because the quality of the ingredients is superior, dog owners do not need to feed as much, can use the foods as a topper to improve the content of other diets or can use them as a treat. There are also breeders out there who want to feed their dogs the best and are prepared to pay that little bit extra to ensure the health of their dogs.
