Dog food with insect protein

Danish pet food company Globe Buddy has introduced a super-premium dog food based on a novel and sustainable source of protein – insects. The brand wants to inspire a positive change and help dog owners live a greener pet life.

“W

e have made it easy to feed your furry friend a healthy and tasty diet while doing some good for the planet, simply by reducing the climate impact of dog food,” said Bjarne Gravesen Jensen, CEO and co-founder of Globe Buddy. The insect-based dog food Globe Buddy Brown features protein from the black soldier fly larvae, which is good for all dogs, especially those with sensitive digestion or intolerances to traditional meats. It is also a win for the climate. Using insect protein in pet food reduces carbon emissions. The carbon footprint of the ingredients in Globe Buddy’s new product is just over half that of the ingredients used in the market’s average dog food, according to calculations performed by the consultancy firm Viegand Maagøe on behalf of Globe Buddy. The insect-based product comes with a third-party verified carbon footprint, something that is still rarely seen in the pet food industry. “While many companies have brought what are claimed to be green pet foods to market, we saw a need among petparents for increased transparency in the environmental sustainability of their dog’s food. Our brand aims to address this unmet need,” said Bjarne Gravesen Jensen. Besides the climate-friendliness, insect larvae are a pet food ingredient that advances the circular economy and minimises waste because insects are fed on by-products from the food industry. Globe Buddy’s commitment to sustainability also extends to their packaging, with a fully recyclable and

Brits to put pups on diet

New research of 2,000 UK dog owners by pet food brand Edgard & Cooper has found that more than three quarters of dog owners (76%) admitted to letting their pets overindulge this Christmas, with 73% giving their dogs Christmas dinner.

L

ondon dog owners are identified as the worst culprits in the UK, with 81% admitting to allowing their pet pooch to overindulge during the festive season by feeding them Christmas dinner. The research also revealed that Londoners are also more likely than anyone else in the UK to put their dogs on a diet in the New Year, with 37% saying they would if they’d overindulged. This New Year Edgard & Cooper is encouraging dog owners to learn the truth about veggie diets for dogs as we hit Veganuary and adopt a flexitarian approach. The pet food brand is working with Ella Mills, health advocate and founder of Deliciously Ella, to bring awareness of the benefits of putting your dog on a flexitarian diet, to combat weight gain after the festive season. Despite 52% of Brits eating more plant-based foods themselves over the past few years, only 37% know what a

8

totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk

flexitarian diet is and even less (29%) know that this can be applied to their pets too, showing that there is much to learn about how this emerging trend caters to canines. With only 27% of owners looking to restrict their dog’s diet after the festive feed, Edgard & Cooper’s pet nutritionist, Mikki Koot, explains why it’s important to watch what our pups eat: “What might seem like a small treat in our eyes, can actually mean a calorie overload for your pup. Did you know that when you give a 20kg dog 1 cube of cheese (60gr) the human equivalent is 2 doughnuts? And 1 rawhide bone (190gr) equates to 7 doughnuts!” Ella Mills, the mind behind the plantbased brand Deliciously Ella and a partner of Edgard & Cooper, has already seen the benefits of a flexitarian diet for her family, including their dog Austin: “Most of us know that a plant-based approach for humans is incredibly @totalgroomingmagazineuk

powerful, with vegans in the UK having half the carbon footprint of carnivores, but there’s still a real stigma around a flexitarian approach for dogs. I’ve certainly noticed a nervousness around a plant rich approach for dogs, but the science is clear, it can be a very healthy diet that has a very positive impact on our planet.” Introducing more vegetables into a pet’s diet is an easy addition to their meals, with the research showing that our dog’s already love crunching on carrots, broccoli, sprouts and peas – all important ways to incorporate healthy vitamins and minerals. Edgard & Cooper is on a mission to make pet food better for our best friends, and this is part of their ongoing campaign to change legislation to make pet food labelling clearer for owners, so we all understand the ingredients in our dog’s dinner.

As the winter chill and adverse weather conditions continue to batter the UK, daily walks can become challenging. TrustedHousesitters has offered playful, exciting ways to keep your dog mentally and physically stimulated, even indoors.

Five Ways to Exercise and Stimulate Your Dog Indoors: Sensory Toys

Turn mealtime into playtime with a snuffle mat, which is an interactive mat where you can hide treats or kibble between multiple layers of fabric strips. This encourages your dog to use their noses and “hunt” for the treats, offering a fun and mentally stimulating challenge while indoors.

Pet Puzzles

Stimulate your dog’s mind and satisfy their need for activity with puzzle toys. These toys can be filled with treats, and your dog will have to figure out how to release them by manipulating the toy in different ways.

Hide treats around the house and watch

Indoor time is a great opportunity to work on obedience and trick training. Learning new commands and tricks or improving their lead manners can be a fun way to bond with your dog and keep them mentally sharp. Just like humans, dogs benefit from activities that keep their minds sharp. So, celebrate National Walk Your Dog Month with TrustedHousesitters with these fun, indoor activities. Whilst bad weather may mean that walks and outdoor activities are limited, be sure to keep your dog’s toilet habits closely monitored and ensure that they

Celebration of dogs returns

More than 20,000 dogs will be taking their paws to the NEC in Birmingham for Crufts 2024, which takes place from 7 – 10 March.

O

rganised by The Kennel Club, Crufts 2024 will run from Thursday and through the weekend with a four-day action-packed schedule celebrating our four-legged friends and all things dog. The event will showcase over 200 diverse breeds and see dogs from all walks of life put their best paw forward in fastpaced and fun competitions including agility, heelwork to music, flyball and obedience. The family-favourite Scruffts final sees the nation’s pets - who earned their place in heats across the country throughout the year - compete for the ‘top dog’ title and on Sunday evening, one of five very special finalists will be crowned as the winner of The Kennel Club Hero Dog Award, as voted by the public. Shortly after, following four days of competition, one canine Crufts competitor will put their paws on the coveted Best in Show trophy, which in 2023 was taken home by Orca, the Lagotto Romagnolo, whose ‘tail never stops wagging’. Each day will conclude with one dog earning their place in the Best in Show final on Sunday evening, beginning with the Utility and Toy groups on Thursday 7 March, Gundog group on Friday 8 March, Working and Pastoral groups on Saturday 9 March and concluding with the Terrier and Hound groups on Sunday 10 March. For the 30th year, the popular Discover Dogs area will be welcoming over 200 different breeds, of all shapes, sizes and personalities, enabling visitors to learn more about the variety of our four-legged friends from breed experts and see which canine might be the right companion for them. From discovering the lesser known ‘underdogs’, like the rare Otterhound,

SHOW PREPARATION

Preparing for shows with style Stepping into the dazzling world of dog grooming shows is not just an opportunity for professional groomers to showcase their skills; it’s a chance to make a lasting impression in a competitive arena.

A

s the curtain rises on grooming shows in 2024 and beyond, groomers need more than just grooming scissors and clippers – they need a strategy that ensures their four-legged clients steal the spotlight. In this article, we’ll unravel the secrets to preparing for dog grooming shows, sharing insights that groomers can implement and advice they can pass on to their clientele to make every show a paw-sitively stunning experience.

Mastering the Basics

Before diving into the intricacies of show grooming, it’s essential to ensure a solid foundation in basic grooming techniques. Regular practice and honing of fundamental skills such as bathing, brushing, and nail trimming are prerequisites for success in any grooming competition. Additionally, staying updated on breed-specific grooming standards is crucial, as judges often evaluate groomers based on how well they adhere to these guidelines.

Attend Grooming Workshops and Seminars

Stay ahead of the curve by attending grooming workshops and seminars conducted by seasoned professionals in the industry. These events offer invaluable insights into the latest grooming trends, techniques, and competition requirements. Workshops often provide hands-on training, allowing groomers to refine their skills under expert guidance. By investing time in continuous education, groomers can elevate their craft and stay abreast of the ever-evolving grooming landscape.

Create a Grooming Routine A well-thought-out grooming routine is the backbone of a successful

16

totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk

competition. Devise a step-by-step grooming process that maximises efficiency and ensures every detail is attended to. Practice this routine consistently to build a seamless flow, making it easier to manage time constraints during the actual competition. Include a pre-show grooming checklist covering everything from coat preparation to finishing touches, ensuring no detail is overlooked.

@totalgroomingmagazineuk

Invest in Quality Tools and Products

A show-worthy groom requires the right tools and products. Invest in highquality grooming equipment, including scissors, clippers, and brushes, to achieve precision and professional results. Select grooming products that cater to specific coat types and enhance the natural beauty of the dog’s fur. Using premium products not only contributes to a polished finish but also demonstrates the groomer’s commitment to excellence.

SHOW PREPARATION Learn the Art of Presentation

Grooming isn’t just about the technical aspects; it’s also an art form. Presentation plays a crucial role in grooming competitions. Groomers should pay attention to details such as symmetry, balance, and overall visual appeal. Learn the art of showcasing the dog’s unique features and expressing the desired breed characteristics. A visually appealing presentation can significantly impact the judges’ perception of the groomer’s skill and artistry.

Practice Handling and Dealing with Stress

Competitions can be stressful for both groomers and their canine clients. Practice handling dogs calmly and confidently, ensuring they remain relaxed throughout the grooming process. Develop strategies for managing stress and unexpected challenges that may arise during a competition. Groomers who can maintain composure under pressure are more likely to deliver exceptional results in the show ring.

Stay Informed About Show Regulations: Each grooming show may have specific rules and regulations that groomers must adhere to. Stay informed about these guidelines to avoid any penalties or disqualifications. Familiarise yourself with the scoring criteria used by judges, and tailor your grooming approach accordingly. Understanding the intricacies of each competition ensures that groomers can showcase their skills in a manner that aligns with the expectations of the judges.

Build a Show Portfolio:

Document your grooming achievements and create a show portfolio that highlights your best work. Include before-and-after photos, details about the breeds you’ve groomed, and any awards or recognitions received. A show portfolio serves as a visual resume, showcasing your expertise and versatility to potential clients and competition organisers alike.

Advice for your clientele

Beyond preparing themselves, groomers can play a crucial role in guiding their clients on how to prepare their dogs for

18

@totalgroomingmagazineuk

SHOW PREPARATION grooming shows. Here are some tips they can share. Encourage clients to maintain a regular grooming routine at home to keep their dogs accustomed to the grooming process. This includes brushing, bathing, and nail trimming. Regular grooming not only enhances the dog’s appearance but also makes the grooming experience less stressful for them. Advise clients to acclimate their dogs to being handled in various ways. This includes getting them used to having their paws touched, ears inspected, and being around grooming tools. Dogs that are comfortable with handling are more likely to remain calm and cooperative during grooming shows. Remind clients to schedule regular health check-ups for their dogs. A healthy coat and overall well-being contribute to a dog’s show readiness. Addressing any health concerns in advance ensures that the dog is in optimal condition for the competition. Emphasise the importance of a balanced and nutritious diet for maintaining a healthy coat. A well-fed dog will have a shiny, lustrous coat, which is a key factor in grooming show success. Recommend high-quality dog food and, if necessary, supplements that promote coat health. Encourage positive reinforcement and socialisation from an early age. Dogs that are comfortable in various environments and around people are more likely to handle the show environment with ease. Positive experiences during grooming sessions contribute to a dog’s confidence and cooperation. As the spotlight shines on the world of dog grooming shows in 2024 and beyond, the key to success lies in meticulous preparation and a passion for the craft. Groomers who invest in continuous learning, master the art of presentation, and stay attuned to industry trends are poised to leave a lasting impression in the competitive show ring. By sharing advice with their clients, groomers contribute not only to the success of individual competitions but also to the overall well-being and show readiness of the canine companions they adore. Here’s to a year of show-stopping performances and groomed-to-perfection pups!

dog grooming salon that prioritises the well-being of dogs while minimising the impact on the environment. We are the first and, currently, the only pet salon in London recycling dog fur with the ‘Green Groomers Collective’.

GROOMERS OF THE MONTH We recycle dog fur which is then reused in up to ten different ways. It is largely used for things from composting to regenerative bio-manufacturing, gardening, wool alternatives, art, and more. With Eco-friendly and sustainable practices implemented in our grooming salon, it is not only beneficial for the environment but also for the well-being of our furry friends by using eco-friendly, natural and biodegradable products.

What can you tell me about how you trained to be a dog groomer? I was originally self-taught many years ago when I owned an American Cocker Spaniel, which is what got me interested in dog grooming. Some years later, I decided to gain the full City & Guilds Qualifications in the Art of Professional Dog Grooming training with multi-award winning groomers and still continue to. I previously co-owned ‘Blackheath Dog Spa’ back in 2007-2009. After returning back to work after maternity leave in 2014, I started work as a salon manager, which included training assistant stylists to stylists at Pets at Home winning multiple awards and achievements. I have also worked as an online dog grooming assessor. My business partner Gordana gained her City & Guilds Dog Grooming Qualifications back in 2012 and she also trained with multi-awardwinning groomers and TV personality groomers and continues to do so, as well as gaining CPD’s, via online courses with webinars/seminars etc. Gordana previously ran her own dog grooming business ‘Paws and Bows’ up until we collaborated and became business partners in 2021.

Do you have any “hidden gems” you’d like to share with our readers?

We are thrilled to be Southwark Business Award Finalists 2023, With over 300,000 residents in Southwark and over 18,000 businesses, to be finalists in two categories is just outstanding! We are also Finalists in the ‘Federation Of Small Businesses London Awards 2023, and ‘Southwark Business Excellence Awards 2022’ finalists in three Business Categories! Making us the first & only pet business in The Borough of

Southwark SE London, to achieve this. We have groomed an array of TV personalities and influencers’ dogs - check out our Instagram page @ thespotlightgroomers

What advice would you give to other dog groomers who are just starting out in the industry? Gain as much experience as possible, maybe book a grooming taster session with a reputable grooming salon to see how they function, be passionate and follow your dreams. Dog grooming can be really challenging, it is hard work and is more than ‘just a haircut’ and ‘playing

with dogs all day’, as some people seem to think, but it is also really rewarding. I highly recommend they also gain qualifications with ‘City & Guilds’ or iPet. In an unregulated industry, we really hope that one day we see the dog grooming industry become regulated and safer.

Are there any general thoughts you’d like to share?

BUSINESS ADD-ONS

Potential Add-ons for Success

Running a dog grooming business in this day and age is more than just washing and styling fur. With pet owners increasingly viewing their furry companions as family members, the demand for top-notch grooming services has soared.

T

o stay ahead of the pack and cater to the evolving needs of customers, it’s essential for dog grooming businesses to explore potential add-ons that not only enhance the grooming experience but also contribute to business growth. In this article, we’ll delve into a myriad of strategies and suggestions to take your dog grooming business to new heights. In the digital age, a robust online presence is a game-changer for any business. Create and maintain active profiles on popular social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and X. Share engaging content such as before-and-after photos of groomed pets, grooming tips, and behind-thescenes glimpses. Consider investing in professional photography to showcase your grooming skills. Furthermore, enable online booking services through your website or social media platforms to streamline the appointment process for busy pet owners. Encourage customer loyalty by implementing a rewards program. Offer discounts or free services for repeat visits or referrals. Consider introducing a membership subscription model where customers pay a fixed monthly fee for a set number of grooming sessions, providing them with cost savings and ensuring a consistent revenue stream for your business. Diversify your service offerings by introducing specialised grooming packages tailored to different breeds or specific customer preferences. This could include spa days, breed-specific grooming styles, or themed packages for special occasions. Providing a variety of options allows you to cater to a broader audience and meet the unique needs of each pet.

Expand your revenue streams by offering pet-friendly merchandise such as branded collars, leashes, or grooming accessories. Customers love to pamper their pets, and selling branded products can contribute to increased brand visibility and loyalty. Consider collaborating with local artisans for unique, handmade pet products to add a local touch to your offerings. Capitalise on the growing trend of holistic pet care by incorporating wellness services into your business. Offer services such as aromatherapy, paw massages, or even canine yoga sessions. These additions not only contribute to the overall well-being of pets but also set your grooming business apart as a comprehensive pet care provider. In a fast-paced world, convenience is key. Consider expanding your services to include mobile grooming options. A fully-equipped grooming van can bring your services directly to the

massages, and calming aromatherapy sessions. Create a tranquil environment within your grooming facility, complete with soft music and calming scents. Last year saw pet owners increasingly value services that prioritise their dog’s mental and emotional health. Incorporating spa days into your offerings not only provides a luxurious experience for pets but also resonates with the growing trend of holistic pet care. Building a robust social media presence is crucial for the success of any modern business. Utilise platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and X to showcase your grooming expertise and engage with your audience. Share captivating content, including beforeand-after photos, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and client testimonials. Consider leveraging the power of videos to demonstrate grooming techniques and provide valuable tips for pet owners. Engage with your followers by responding to comments and direct messages promptly. Additionally, run targeted social media campaigns or promotions to attract new customers and keep existing ones excited about your services. Implementing flexible pricing options involves creating a range of choices for your customers. Consider introducing tiered packages that offer different levels

of service at varying price points. For example, a basic package may include standard grooming services, while a premium package could encompass additional treatments such as spa sessions or speciality shampoos. Additionally, offering à la carte services allows customers to choose specific grooming treatments based on their dog’s needs. This flexibility not only caters to a diverse clientele but also provides transparency and customisation, enhancing customer satisfaction. To optimise your appointment schedule and ensure consistent business, experiment with offering discounts during off-peak hours or certain days of the week, encouraging customers to take advantage of these cost-saving opportunities. As your dog grooming business explores these diverse add-ons, remember that the heart of your success lies in the genuine care and passion you bring to your work. Whether it’s through educational events, eco-friendly practices, or spa days, the ultimate goal is to contribute positively to the lives of the pets you groom and the owners who entrust them to you. RACHEL BEAN MONTHLY

Cold weather

This issue, Rachel Bean is giving us the rundown and some top tips on what to do with pets during the coldest month of the year!

H

ello to all readers of Total Grooming Magazine, and I hope that your new year is going well so far! It’s been off to a flying start for Team Bean, and I was excited to secure a stand at the forthcoming Natural Dog Expo, which is taking place at the Voco St John’s Hotel in Solihull in May. At the event, I’ll be extolling the virtues of learning canine first aid, but I’ll also be looking forward to meeting speakers and other stand holders at this exciting interactive conference. For years now I’ve fed my dogs Chilli and Wisp on raw food, and the movement has really taken off in recent years. I’m proud to say that Chilli (aka Linda Biscuits hehe) is sponsored by Paleo Ridge, just one of the amazing raw food brands which are popping up in specialist and mainstream pet stores, and even supermarkets. It seems that just as we are all taking our own health more seriously and looking at natural solutions, we are also

RACHEL BEAN MONTHLY doing the same for our pets. And as a qualified veterinary nurse, I really do believe that this is a fantastic thing. This month in my column I have two tickets to give away for the Natural Dog Expo. If you would like to be in with a chance of winning email hayley@ animalnewsagency.com and the winner will be announced in my next column. To find out more about the event, and the amazing speakers that will be attending go to www.naturaldogexpo. com So, for this month’s tip, I’m looking at cold weather. We’ve already had paw care tips, but there are plenty of things that we need to do a little differently when the weather is cold. Here are my top five tips, for those frosty walks:

1. Paws:

Be sure to dry and check your dog’s paws after a walk to prevent cracking, and to clean away any foreign bodies

2. Invest in a warm coat:

Particularly for an older dog, a warm coat is essential for a winter walk

3. Avoid water:

Water at this time of year can be incredibly cold, and their usual dip could give your dog a life-threatening shock. Avoid waterways and streams

4. What are they sniffing?:

Winter and spring are prime bug seasons for dogs, and if you live in an area with lots of dogs, a bug can travel fast. It may be harder to spot because of leaves on the ground, but stay vigilant and keep your dog away from other dogs’ poo.

5. Nose care:

Noses get cold too! Consider investing in a nose and paw balm to keep their snout from getting chapped. Much like our lips, the cold plays havoc with extremities in the winter and spring. To find out more about Rachel Bean go to www.rachelbean.co.uk

Cat grooming consideration

Starting out as a cat groomer can be quite daunting. Cats vary in temperament between each individual as well as moment to moment and you need to constantly monitor them. You are responsible for someone else’s beloved companion and you want to give them the best service possible. Here are seven handy tips when you are first getting started that are worth considering. By Katie Gwilt.

Always treat the cats in your care with kindness

For me, the cats’ welfare is always first and foremost above anything else when I am grooming them. I like to learn about the cat and what the environment is like, their health and their personality so I can adapt the groom to suit them. Are they an indoor or outdoor cat? Elderly or young? Are they used to being around new people or do they spend all their time with one human? Do they have any known health issues or injuries? All of this can help in knowing how best to handle the cat to keep them calm so they have as positive an experience with you as possible.

Be confident

Cats pick up on our moods so easily. If you are confident when handling cats they know and will trust you more. If you start to doubt yourself and your competency, try taking 3 deep breaths to centre yourself before starting grooming again. I find having one or both hands on the cat while I do this can really help with your connection to them as well and help them to reset as well. I do blinky eyes (slow soft eye blinks while looking at the cat) if the cat responds positively to eye contact which is a lovely way to communicate safety at the same time.

Jack Diamond is another elderly cat and was very comfy in his bed when we arrived to groom him. We simply lifted his bed onto the table to assess him before starting his groom so he had a nice way to ease into the experience

best for their cats. Sometimes it means advising against something or even for something the client hasn’t considered. A compromise can often be reached so all parties are happy. It takes a while to build your confidence here but it will come with time I promise!

You will make mistakes

It’s always important to remember that you are trained and know what you are doing. Sometimes you will get unusual requests from clients or asked to do something you do not believe is best for the cat. Human clients rely on your knowledge to advise them on what is

Just because you have finished your cat grooming course doesn’t mean you know everything. You will be constantly learning and improving throughout your career. We all make mistakes but hopefully, they will be small easy-to-fix ones that you can use as learning opportunities. If you aren’t sure of something you can always pause or reschedule the groom to do more research. There are some cat grooming groups online you can join

Remember you are the expert

My apprentice working with Millie, an elderly cat with a lot of health problems. It was her first groom and we handled her on our laps to keep her calm and to protect her arthritic back legs

FELINE FOCUS to ask questions of more experienced groomers and you can always contact your tutor even after finishing your course. Remember that there are always changes happening with new methods, techniques and research coming to light so it is completely natural that how you groom will change over time. I know I do things a lot differently now than I did when I first started.

Find your personal style

Over time you will adapt your grooming to suit you and your clients needs. You may find you prefer mobile grooming over salon grooming or vice versa. You may like grooming at floor level rather than on a table. You may try different hold techniques to suit your body and how it moves through trial and error. This is all great and shows that you are finding your own personal style so you can work in the most efficient way for you and your clients. All our bodies work differently. Some of us may have joint problems or health conditions so it is important to spend some time working out what works best for you and adapting so you are at your best and most comfortable.

My apprentice working with Teddy a large Maine Coon. He was anxious on the table so we switched to working with him on the floor

Use social media to your advantage

Social media cannot be escaped these days (not sure if this is good or bad!). It is a great way to promote your business online. I highly recommend having your own website as well as you own all the content on it. Remember you can use social media to educate and enlighten the general public as well as just showing off your beautiful cat grooms. I like to post stories about the cats I meet so it adds a personal element that draws readers in where possible. Pick one platform to begin with and get to know it well before adding in a second or third. Make sure it is a platform you enjoy being on as well otherwise, it is going to be an uphill struggle from the start. Follow other cat and animal professionals and make sure you engage with your followers as often as possible.

Moon is blind in one eye (possibly due to a firework). Have a think about how to adapt grooms for various illnesses and disabilities you may encounter

Always keep trying new things and learning. There are so many online resources now with social media, courses and the internet in general. Documentaries on cat behaviour, cat-specific scientific journals and

organisations plus so many in-person courses and qualifications you can do to enhance your grooming by learning about other aspects of animal welfare. I have studied using botanicals (zoopharmacognosy) with animals, feline behaviour, nutrition, first aid, energy healing and animal reiki, small animal massage, acupressure and much more which I incorporate into my grooming practice to enhance the experience for

the animals in my care. You never know where this journey will take you and it’s fun to follow the rabbit down the hole and see where it takes you next! TREATMENTS

Treat yourself! In the ever-evolving world of pet care, one aspect that continues to gain traction and importance is dog grooming. In 2024, as we pamper our furry friends with an array of treatments, the significance of grooming goes beyond just aesthetics.

rom health benefits to fostering a stronger bond, dog grooming has become a must for responsible pet ownership. As we eagerly await the trends of 2024, let’s delve into why dog grooming is not just a luxury but a necessity in the modern era. Dog grooming isn’t merely about keeping your canine companion looking dapper; it plays a crucial role in maintaining their overall health and hygiene. Regular grooming sessions help prevent various health issues, such as skin infections, matted fur, and parasites. Trimming nails, cleaning ears, and brushing teeth are essential tasks

that can be easily overlooked but are vital for a dog’s well-being. In 2023, pet owners were increasingly recognising the correlation between proper grooming and their dog’s health, making it a priority rather than an occasional indulgence. Just as we feel more comfortable and content after a good shower and a trim, dogs experience the same. Grooming not only removes dirt and tangles but also helps regulate body temperature, especially in long-haired breeds. As the climate changes, with warmer temperatures and unpredictable weather patterns, grooming becomes a crucial part of ensuring your furry friend remains

42

@totalgroomingmagazineuk

comfortable all year round. In 2023, pet salons incorporated climate-appropriate grooming techniques to cater to the specific needs of dogs in different regions. Dog grooming isn’t just a one-way street; it’s an opportunity for bonding between the pet and its owner. Regular grooming sessions foster trust and strengthen the emotional connection between the two. As we enter 2024, the importance of this bond is likely to be emphasized further, with grooming becoming a shared experience rather than a task. In addition, groomers are now incorporating socialisation aspects into their services, creating a positive and

TREATMENTS friendly environment for dogs to interact with others. The skin is the largest organ for both humans and dogs, and just like us, dogs can suffer from various skin issues. Grooming plays a pivotal role in preventing these problems by promoting healthy skin and a shiny coat. Dog owners are becoming more conscious of the ingredients in grooming products, opting for natural and organic options to avoid potential irritants. This shift towards skin-friendly grooming practices is likely to continue into 2024, with a growing demand for holistic and sustainable grooming solutions. While traditional grooming services remain popular, 2023 witnessed a surge in demand for specialised treatments catering to specific needs. From aromatherapy sessions to pawdicures, pet owners are exploring a plethora of pampering options for their four-legged friends. As we eagerly anticipate 2024, the trend of specialized grooming treatments is expected to grow, with an increasing focus on individualized care that addresses the unique requirements of each dog. Just like humans, dogs can experience anxiety and stress, and grooming sessions can either contribute to or alleviate these issues. Modern grooming techniques emphasize creating a stress-free environment, with calming scents, gentle handling, and positive reinforcement. As we step into 2024, the industry is likely to witness further advancements in stress-relief grooming, including the incorporation of technology and innovative approaches to soothe anxious pets. In conclusion, the importance of dog grooming goes far beyond aesthetics. It’s about ensuring the health, comfort, and happiness of our canine companions. The trends of this year have highlighted the shift towards more holistic and personalised grooming practices, with a keen focus on overall well-being. As we look forward to what 2024 has in store for the world of dog grooming, one thing is certain – the bond between humans and their furry friends will only grow stronger through the care and attention provided during grooming sessions. So, here’s to the pawsome journey ahead, where our dogs continue to be pampered, loved, and groomed to perfection!

GROOMERS AROUND THE WORLD

Brazil

In the world of pet pampering, few places rival the passion and creativity found in Brazil’s dog grooming scene. From the bustling streets of Rio de Janeiro to the cosy neighbourhoods of São Paulo, Brazilian dog groomers bring a unique flair and expertise to their craft that sets them apart on the global stage.

L

et’s delve into the colourful world of dog grooming in Brazil, comparing it to the practices found across the pond in the UK, and exploring what UK groomers can learn from their Brazilian counterparts. Brazilian dog grooming is all about making a statement. Walk into any grooming salon in Brazil, and you’re bound to encounter a riot of colours, intricate designs, and bold styling choices. From vibrant dye jobs to elaborate patterns shaved into fur, Brazilian groomers take pride in transforming their furry clients into walking works of art. One of the hallmarks of Brazilian grooming is the emphasis on creativity. Groomers often draw inspiration from Brazilian culture, incorporating elements like carnival motifs, tropical themes, and even soccer team logos into their designs. This unique approach to grooming reflects Brazil’s vibrant spirit

and passion for self-expression. On the other side of the globe, dog grooming in the UK tends to be more conservative and traditional. While British groomers certainly prioritize the health and well-being of their canine clients, the overall aesthetic tends to lean towards simplicity and understatement. In the UK, grooming is seen as more of a practical necessity than a form of artistic expression. Standard grooming practices focus on maintaining coat health, preventing matting, and ensuring the dog’s comfort and hygiene. While there is certainly skill and precision involved, the emphasis is less on bold styling choices and more on achieving a neat and tidy appearance. Despite these differences, there’s much that UK groomers can learn from their Brazilian counterparts, and vice versa. One area where UK groomers can benefit from Brazilian expertise is in the realm of creativity. By embracing a

more playful and adventurous approach to grooming, UK groomers can tap into new markets and attract clients who are looking for something beyond the ordinary. Brazilian groomers, on the other hand, can learn from the UK’s focus on professionalism and customer service. While Brazilian groomers are known for their artistic flair, there’s often room for improvement when it comes to efficiency, communication, and client satisfaction. By adopting some of the practices and standards upheld by UK groomers, Brazilian professionals can elevate their industry even further. As the global pet industry continues to grow, so too will the opportunities for cross-cultural exchange and collaboration among groomers from different parts of the world. While each country brings its own unique approach to dog grooming, there’s immense value in sharing knowledge, techniques, and best practices to elevate the standards of the profession as a whole. In the end, whether you prefer the bold and colourful stylings of Brazil or the classic elegance of the UK, one thing is clear: the love and care that groomers put into their work transcends borders and cultures, enriching the lives of dogs

and their owners everywhere. In Brazil, dog grooming is a vibrant and expressive art form, with groomers infusing their work with creativity and flair. In contrast, the UK’s grooming scene tends to prioritize tradition and practicality. However, by learning from each other’s

strengths, both countries’ groomers can continue to push the boundaries of their craft and provide top-notch care for their furry clients. So whether your dog sports a colourful carnival-inspired design or a classic, neatly trimmed coat, one thing is certain: they’re in good hands, no matter where in the world they roam!
