INDUSTRY UPDATE

Muddy paw prints

A

ny household with a busy and chaotic mix of dogs and young children will despair of trying to keep on top of messy, muddy gardens. One such household had a back garden that was a veritable quagmire due to the energetic activities of two puppies and three children. Surrounded by greenery it was also prone to collecting fallen leaves and twigs that would get trodden into the lawn to add to the overall sense of ruin. The decision to go for an artificial lawn from Artificial Lawn Company gave the homeowner a clean, easy-to-maintain garden ideal for dogs and children. Due to the circular nature of the lawn, minimising wastage was uppermost during the design and installation process. Deciding on a 6m diameter lawn meant that Artificial Lawn Company could optimise with and 4 & 2m width roll of grass to ensure the homeowner got the best price possible. The 40mm Luxury Lawn product was

selected as it was considered the hardest wearing that would prove the most resilient against the constant assault of energetic paws and little feet. No matter how much of a battering it got, it gave the homeowners a stunning, vibrant olive green garden, and a muddy footprintfree kitchen, all year round. The maintenance required was minimal and the lawn mower given away as it was no longer needed. Any fallen debris from the surrounding shrubs and

bushes was swept away using a leaf blower or stiff broom. Any dog poo was removed in the usual way and, if needed, a quick sluice with the hose or a watering can ensure that any residue is drained away in the usual way. Artificial Lawn Company’s Luxury Lawn is one of its most popular premium products which is versatile and robust in even the most challenging of climates and circumstances. The product is delivered with a ten-year guarantee.

Gourmet dinner

O

ver 27 million pets in the UK tucked into a Christmas dinner last year, new research shows, as pet owners across the country celebrated the festive season. However, vets have warned of certain festive foods that can be dangerous for pets. The study found that two-thirds of pet owners (63%) feed their pets a gourmet Christmas dinner that includes roast meats and trimmings, including turkey, chicken, beef, pork and lamb, while a tenth (11%) opt for classic Christmas vegetables, including carrots, sprouts, and peas. However, while most of the classic meat and vegetable options are safe for pets to consume in moderation, vets warn pet owners to be cautious with what they feed their pets during Christmas and New Year, as festive meals can contain hidden dangers. Stuffing, for example, commonly includes onions and garlic, which can be toxic to dogs

n the UK it is estimated that up to 25% of people experiencing homelessness have a pet, but at the moment only 10% of hostels allow animals to come inside. This creates a terrible choice for pet owners who form the estimated 271,000 homeless population of this country, and fewer than 7% of homeless pet owners said they would give up their pet in exchange for housing in a recent Crisis survey. Street Paws is a charity which provides front line veterinary care and support for north of England’s homeless pet population, which is predominantly dogs. And this Christmas the charity is continuing its drive to encourage more hostels to become Dog Champions, and accept the animals of people in need too. The scheme’s aim is to equip hostel staff with the essential skills that they need to ensure a safe place for residents and their pets. The Saviour Trust, which supports homeless people in the Leeds area has just become the latest organisation to join the Dog Champions Scheme. The trust’s spokesperson Hannah Iwanuschak, said: “It breaks our heart to think that people have to choose between a warm bed and their beloved pet – Street Paws have given us the tools to open our doors to the homeless people with dogs – we can’t thank them enough.” @totalgroomingmagazineuk

The Dog Champions Scheme offers hostels accredited staff training and support, canine first aid training and a first aid kit, advice on pet policies, owner agreements, online 27/7 vet support, Street Paws patient registration and full veterinary care. This year Street Paws has added a Good Ownership and a Pet CV for owners, to support their move into permanent accommodation with their pet. The charity’s founder Michelle Southern, who coordinates the charity’s work in big cities such as Manchester, but also in smaller towns too, said: “The bond between a homeless person and their pet is well documented and provides many positive mental and physical benefits to the owner. “Despite this most people who are homeless are still asked to give up their pet to access accommodation. Street Paws charity believes that owning a dog should not be a barrier to accessing support and a safe place to sleep. “The nights are getting darker and colder, and it is essential that as many people make it to a shelter as possible, and we believe that skilling up hostels and helping them to become pet friendly is a giant stepping stone and has proven success with our many partners across the UK.” To find out more and to donate to Street Paws go to www.streetpaws.co.uk

Death of a dog hits harder than a relative dying, new survey of UK owners reveals.

D

og owners in the UK have been left more distressed by the death of their beloved pet, than that of a relative, according to a new survey. Research by Cliverton, a specialist insurance supplier for animal-related trades, found that almost two-thirds (65 per cent) of owners surveyed said the emotional upset at the loss was greater than that experienced when a family member dies. And so deep is the trauma that 47 per cent said it would deter them from buying a dog in the future. “Unlike humans, dogs never let you down,” said Lynne Fisher, Associate Director at Cliverton. “Through good times and bad times, they are there by your side. “The bond between dogs and owners is extremely strong – ‘companionship’ was cited as the main reason for

8

totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk

getting a dog – so the depth of feeling experienced when they die is totally understandable.” The survey also found that 79 per cent of owners said their dog had provided more emotional support and comfort than friends or relatives. “In difficult times, simply stroking a dog can be a very reflective and therapeutic activity. It can help reduce stress and encourage mindfulness,” said Fisher. “However depressed you might be feeling, knowing that you have to feed and walk the dog gives you a reason to get out of bed in the morning. This is something that Ricky Gervais captured perfectly, in his sitcom After Life. “Some people even find it comforting to voice their worries, fears and upsets to their dog. It’s a way of organising and rationalising your thoughts, venting and offloading, secure in the knowledge that @totalgroomingmagazineuk

whatever you say, you are not going to cause concern, in the way that talking to family members might. Dogs offer no judgement.” The psychological benefits of having a dog could explain why dog ownership in the UK is at a ten-year high, with 11 million dogs being owned1. “When you consider the level of support dogs provide, it makes it more important than ever to care for them,” Fisher added. “It is only right and fair that anyone thinking of having a dog needs to be fully aware of the responsibilities that come with it. “The latest available figures from the RSPCA show that 8,305 dogs were abandoned in 2022. With Christmas approaching, we advise prospective owners to think extremely carefully about the implications before adding a dog to the family.”

Keeping pets safe Now available to Pet retailers is an extensive range of pet-friendly and non-toxic cleaning chemicals for the home, from multi-award-winning UK manufacturer and No. 1 eco-cleaning company, Delphis Eco.

W

arning of the dangers of using cleaning products and popular household sprays which harbour harmful chemicals that can be toxic if ingested by dogs and cats, Delphis Eco’s products are plant-based, and nonharmful to both the user and their pets. Included in the Delphis Eco range of pet-friendly products are Multi-Purpose Cleaner, Anti-Bacterial Sanitiser and Cleaner, Bathroom Cleaner, Multi-Surface Polish, Drain Cleaner and Maintainer and Floor & Surface Lemon Gel Cleaner. Managing Director and Founder of Delphis Eco, Mark Jankovich says: “We’re a nation of animal lovers and even when owners are being cautious, pets are still regularly exposed to cleaning products, particularly if they walk across, or lick the floor, where disinfectant or the cleaning chemicals have been used. “Many popular cleaning products, including floor cleaners, drain cleaners, oven cleaners and multi-surface cleaners, contain ammonia, bleach, phthalates, and phosphates. Pets can inadvertently ingest or inhale these substances, leading to various longer term health issues, including skin irritations, respiratory problems, or even poisoning. “Owners may not always be aware of the potential risks to which they are exposing their pets, but we are looking to work closely with trade retailers to help drive awareness and offer their customers a range of cleaning products which are powerful and effective, whilst being kind to animals and the users themselves. “We’re offering retailers good margin to stock products that we believe have a real value to pet owners and look forward to working with retailers to help drive awareness around the need to keep pets safe around the home”. Delphis Eco products provide pet owners with a powerful solution. The

company prioritises using natural, plant-based ingredients, which are gentle on surfaces and kind to the environment, but that doesn’t mean loss of effectiveness. Delphis Eco’s products are highly effective at tackling dirt, stains, and odours. From pet-safe floor cleaners to multi-surface polishes, the range covers all cleaning needs without compromising on performance. And Delphis Eco is not only concerned with the welfare of our animals at home but also those outside, especially in oceans and waterways, using products which readily break down naturally, and

Furthermore, all Delphis packaging is made from 100% recycled British plastic, the labels are printed with biodegradable vegetable ink, and boxes are made from FSC-certified cardboard and are fully recyclable. Delphis Eco was the first UK manufacturer to achieve EU Ecolabel accreditation and currently has the greatest number of products with this certification. PetQuip Awards Noble Futures introduces Nature’s SAFE to the pet trade dinner at the PetQuip Awards in October.

H

osted alongside PATS Telford, the PetQuip Awards are an annual opportunity to recognise innovative brands across the UK’s vibrant pet industry. This year, for the first time ever, the PetQuip Awards hosted a chosen charity at the event. Nature’s SAFE, one of Europe’s first charitable living biobanks working to Save Animals From Extinction through cell & tissue preservation for future regeneration, was the guest of honour. Tullis Matson, Chair and one of the founders of this extraordinary charity, joined the evening to share a glimpse into the inspiring work the charity is doing to protect threatened animal species. Through a brilliant prize draw on the night, guests raised over £2,000 for this extraordinary work. Tullis Matson said about the event. “We are so grateful to PetQuip and Noble Futures for giving us this fantastic opportunity to share the work we are

involved in with a new audience. Without Nature’s SAFE, for many species already so near the brink of extinction, there will be no return. With Nature’s SAFE and other biobanking partners, there is optimism and The PetQuip Awards gave us a platform to share this knowledge so that the industry could hear that there is a plan for the future.” It was also the Noble Futures team’s very first PetQuip Awards, where they acted as sponsor for both Nature’s SAFE and the prestigious Supplier of the Year award. Tony Noble, Managing Director and Founder of Noble Futures commented: “All of us at Noble Futures are so inspired by the work Nature’s SAFE does that we simply had to get involved and help in any way we can. Working within the Pet and Animal Health space, Noble Futures already partners with many of PetQuip’s members, so sponsoring at the awards felt right and so did the

marriage of Nature’s SAFE as sponsored charity. It was a wonderful evening, celebrating the best in the Pet industry and a great way to shine a light on our charity partner, Nature’s SAFE, to a room full of people passionate about animals and nature.” Susan Fairley, Trade Federation Manager for the PetQuip Awards, commented: “This year was the first time we have worked with a charity partner as part of our awards evening. The presentation of the charity’s work, plus the amazing prizes donated for the draw, added both moving and entertaining elements to the awards evening, contributing to its undoubted success. Our guests were moved and inspired by the charity’s work, demonstrated by the audience’s reaction and the incredible total raised on the night.” For more details on the PetQuip Awards 2024, please contact Susan Fairley, Trade Federation Manager.

RESOLUTIONS & PREDICTIONS

Reflecting and looking forward In the dynamic world of dog grooming, 2023 has proven to be a year of remarkable changes and advancements. Groomers across the globe have witnessed a transformative shift in practices, technologies, and client expectations. As we reflect on the trends that defined this year, it’s evident that the industry is evolving at an unprecedented pace.

F

irst things first, the dog grooming world is now all about tech. Walk into any salon worth its suds, and you’ll find groomers armed with high-tech gizmos and software, making the whole process smoother than a freshly groomed coat. Slick mobile apps are taking over scheduling, ensuring that the only thing clients need to worry about is choosing the cutest bow for their pup. One of the most significant changes in the dog grooming world has been the integration of technology into daily operations. Grooming salons are now equipped with state-of-the-art tools and software to streamline appointments, manage customer databases, and even enhance grooming techniques. The use of mobile apps for scheduling and communication has facilitated easier interactions between groomers and pet owners, fostering a more efficient and customer-friendly experience. In 2023, there has been a noticeable shift towards a holistic approach to dog grooming, emphasizing the health and well-being of our furry friends. Groomers are increasingly incorporating natural and organic products into their grooming routines, catering to pet owners who prioritize eco-friendly and pet-safe alternatives. Specialized grooming services, such as aromatherapy sessions and therapeutic massages, have gained popularity as pet owners seek to provide a spa-like experience for their beloved companions. 2023 has seen a change from just ‘looking good’ to ‘feeling good’ in the grooming world. Pet parents are all about wellness, and groomers are answering the call. Natural and organic

products are the new stars of the grooming shelf, as clients lean towards eco-friendly options that are as gentle on the planet as they are on their pets. We’re talking spa-level treatments, folks, complete with aromatherapy and canine massages that would make any human envious. The demand for personalized grooming experiences has reached new heights in 2023. Dog groomers are recognizing the importance of understanding each dog’s unique needs and preferences. From customized haircut styles to specific shampoos tailored to individual coat types, groomers are going the extra mile to ensure a personalized and comfortable grooming experience for every furry client. Pets are unique, and groomers are finally treating them as such. No more one-size-fits-all haircuts; it’s all about personalized experiences. Groomers are getting into the minds (and fur) of each pup, tailoring everything from the shampoo used to the cut style itself. It’s like a canine couture show, with each pup strutting out with a look that

screams ‘this is me!’ With the evolving landscape of the dog grooming industry, education has become a key driver of success. Groomers are actively seeking opportunities to enhance their skills and stay updated on the latest grooming techniques and trends. Workshops, webinars, and certification programs have become more accessible, empowering groomers to stay ahead of the curve and deliver exceptional services to their clients. Gone are the days of sticking to the same old tricks. Groomers in 2023 are hungry for knowledge, and the industry is serving up a buffet of educational opportunities. Workshops, webinars, and certifications are all the rage, ensuring that groomers stay sharp and stay ahead. The result? A bunch of groomers who aren’t just good at what they do – they’re exceptional. Who has time to drag their furry friends to a salon these days? Enter the rise of mobile grooming units, swooping in to save the day. Imagine a fullyequipped grooming haven on wheels, pulling up to your doorstep. It’s the

18

@totalgroomingmagazineuk

ultimate convenience for pet parents and a stress-free experience for the pooches who get to stay in their own territory. The convenience of mobile grooming services has gained immense popularity in 2023. Pet owners appreciate the flexibility and time-saving aspect of having a groomer come to their doorstep. Mobile grooming units equipped with the latest tools and amenities offer a premium grooming experience without the need for pets to leave the comfort of their home. This trend is reshaping the traditional grooming salon model and providing a convenient alternative for busy pet owners. As environmental consciousness continues to grow, the dog grooming industry is embracing sustainability. Grooming salons are adopting ecofriendly practices, such as using biodegradable products, minimizing water consumption, and implementing energy-efficient technologies. Pet owners are increasingly seeking grooming services that align with their values, creating a demand for environmentally responsible grooming practices.

Saving the planet is in, and the grooming industry is all in behind it. Sustainable practices are taking centre stage, with groomers adopting biodegradable products, cutting down on water usage, and turning to energy-efficient tech. Pet parents are applauding, choosing groomers who share their eco-friendly values. As we bid farewell to 2023, it’s clear that the dog grooming industry has undergone a significant transformation. The strides made in technology, personalized experiences, education, and sustainability have laid the foundation for a promising future. Looking ahead to 2024, the momentum is expected to continue, with even more innovations and opportunities on the horizon. In conclusion, 2023 has been a pivotal year for the dog grooming industry. Groomers have embraced change, adapting to new technologies, focusing on health and wellness, and catering to the individual needs of their four-legged clients. The outlook for 2024 is incredibly promising, and as we anticipate another year of growth, it’s evident that the dog grooming industry will continue to thrive. Here’s to an exciting and prosperous 2024, where groomers can build on the successes of 2023 and contribute to the continued evolution of this dynamic and

rewarding profession. All signs point to an even more fabulous 2024. The changes we’ve seen this year are just the beginning. Tech will keep pushing boundaries, wellness will be non-negotiable, and personalized pampering will become an art form. The education wave will keep rolling, and mobile grooming will become a staple for busy pet parents. Green grooming? Expect it to be the norm, not the exception. Dog grooming in 2023 has been nothing short of a whirlwind! This year has seen groomers don their capes of innovation, embracing changes that have revolutionized the way we pamper our furry pals. From high-tech gadgets to holistic spa experiences, let’s dive into the nitty-gritty of how our grooming world has transformed and what’s on the horizon for 2024. So, here’s to the dog grooming world, evolving, adapting, and thriving. As we wag our way into 2024, let’s celebrate the pawsibilities that lie ahead. It’s not just another year – it’s another chance to make tails wag, fur shine, and the entire grooming experience a testament to the incredible bond between humans and their four-legged companions. GROOMERS OF THE MONTH

The Dog Grooming Nerd

Maria Gwilliam is a Finnish-born dog groomer and content creator and is based in sunny Bognor Regis in West Sussex. We spoke with her to find out more about her dog grooming business.

What can you tell me about your dog grooming business?

My salon, The Dog Grooming Nerd, is your everyday pet groomer, and we specialise in behavioural issues and have a very calm 1-2-1 approach to grooming. I’ve run the salon since April 2021, after being made redundant from an employed position at a grooming salon. Sadly, the salon didn’t survive the pandemic, and DGN was the result of five weeks of stress and long days to get everything ready as quickly as possible. While I didn’t get the luxury of meticulous planning and prep with my salon, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I even had the added drama of Evergiven at the Suez Canal when I was trying to source all my equipment and let me tell you it was a bit of a scavenge hunt to get everything together on time for opening day.

What would you say is your unique selling point? On top of being a groomer, I’m also a

content creator! I started my channel The Dog Grooming Nerd on YouTube way back in 2020, when I needed something to keep my mind occupied over several lockdowns. I wanted to create a space for fellow groomers where they can find product reviews, everyday grooming life and tutorials for

22

totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk

@totalgroomingmagazineuk

entertainment and education purposes. Over time my content has really evolved and I’m now predominantly on TikTok, and I absolutely adore this side of my job! I also make videos for dog owners, helping them understand the world of dog grooming from both professional and personal perspectives.

GROOMERS OF THE MONTH Social media has brought me so many opportunities and I’ve got to meet so many wonderful groomers because of it. The highlight of 2023 for me was speaking about social media at The Groomers Market in Aldershot. Social media is a massively valuable part of any business’s arsenal, and I felt very honoured to be able to pass my knowledge on to other groomers.

What can you tell me about how you trained to be a dog groomer?

I completed my City & Guilds level 2 and part of level 3 at Brinsbury College in Pulborough. I am one of the many groomers who didn’t get a chance to fully complete their level 3 studies, and I am now in the process of completing the Fast Track level 3 qualification with iPet. After leaving Brinsbury I was incredibly lucky to land a trainee position at the grooming salon I worked at until opening DGN, as it gave me so much “real life” experience and I don’t think I’d be half the groomer I am today without it. A college environment is a fantastic starting point, but never quite reflects real life.

Do you have any “hidden gems” you’d like to share with our readers?

While not really a hidden gem, social media! It tends to be a big scary monster to a lot of groomers, and it really doesn’t need to be. Especially Facebook is such a huge source of customers for me, and I think every groomer should have an active page on the platform. Potential customers love being able to speak to the groomer directly, which isn’t always possible through a standard website. It can sound like so much work mastering social media, but my advice is to just focus on one, to begin with. Once you learn one, all the others seem far less daunting. Majority of social media is completely free to use, and especially Facebook is a great way to advertise your business completely free of charge. When I first opened DGN, I would advertise the salon in any local Facebook groups that allowed ads. This gave us the initial momentum a new business really needs to survive, and now almost three years on I don’t have to advertise at all. Most of our new customers are from recommendations from other local groomers or current customers.

What advice would you give to other dog groomers who are just starting out in the industry? My advice to any new groomers is to never stop learning! Attend seminars/ webinars, join grooming groups on Facebook, get friendly with your other local groomers and don’t let small setbacks knock your confidence. That first bad review or complaint is always heartbreaking, but it is just a part of running a business and your salon will survive it.

The grooming community is absolutely amazing if you need any help, so don’t be too scared to ask for help in a grooming group or another groomer in your local area. We’re all in this together, there’s plenty of dogs to go around and we shouldn’t compete with each other! Are there any general thoughts you’d like to share? You can find me across all major social media under The Dog Grooming Nerd. I love sharing my knowledge with others, and my inbox is always open for any questions other groomers may have!

DENTAL CARE

Doggy dental

If you’re a dog groomer or aspiring to be one, you know how rewarding it is to transform a scruffy pup into a four-legged fashionista. But here’s a dirty little secret: many groomers overlook a crucial aspect of a dog’s well-being - dental hygiene.

Y

ep, those pearly whites matter more than you might think. So, grab your grooming tools and let’s dive into the world of canine dental care! Picture this: your furry client struts into your salon with a wagging tail and a gleaming coat. But when they flash those teeth during a yawn, you’re met with a not-so-pleasant surprise. Dental issues in dogs are more common than you might think, and as a groomer, you have the power to make a difference. First off, why should you care about Fido’s dental hygiene? Well, it’s not just about a fresh breath (although that’s a nice bonus). Dental problems in dogs can lead to serious health issues. choice—it’s a health necessity. Now, you might be wondering, “How do I, a dog groomer extraordinaire, become a dental care maestro?” Fear not, because there are plenty of avenues for you to become the tooth fairy for our furry friends. First things first, education is key. Attend workshops, seminars, or online courses specifically focused on canine dental care. These sessions often cover the basics of doggy dental anatomy, common dental problems, and, most importantly, how to maintain good oral hygiene during grooming sessions. Many reputable organizations offer certification programs for groomers looking to enhance their knowledge in this area. Don’t forget to tap into the wealth of information available online. There are countless articles, webinars, and videos dedicated to dog dental care. YouTube, for instance, is a goldmine of tutorials where experienced groomers share their

tips and tricks. Learning from others in the field can provide valuable insights and practical techniques that you can apply in your own grooming sessions. Consider teaming up with a veterinarian to gain hands-on experience. Shadowing a vet during dental check-ups or procedures can give you a deeper understanding of the issues dogs face and the best practices for maintaining their oral health. It’s a fantastic way to bridge the gap between grooming and veterinary care. Investing in quality dental tools is a no-brainer. Toothbrushes, dental wipes, and dental sprays designed for dogs are readily available. Familiarize yourself with these tools and incorporate them into your grooming routine. Gentle brushing and cleaning can make a world of difference in preventing plaque and tartar buildup, promoting healthier gums, and keeping those doggy breath issues at bay. Networking is another powerful tool in your arsenal. Joining grooming forums,

social media groups, or attending industry events can connect you with like-minded professionals who share your passion for dog care. Exchange ideas, ask questions, and learn from the experiences of others. You might discover innovative techniques or new products that could revolutionize your approach to canine dental hygiene. Remember, practice makes perfect. Offer discounted or complimentary dental care sessions as part of your grooming services to gain hands-on experience. Not only will this benefit your furry clients, but it’ll also boost your confidence and expertise in the realm of dental grooming. In conclusion, dog groomers, it’s time to shine a spotlight on those chompers! By mastering canine dental hygiene, you’re not just enhancing the aesthetics of your grooming sessions; you’re safeguarding the overall health and happiness of your four-legged clientele. So, grab that toothbrush, attend those workshops, and let’s make the world

How to earn more in 2024

Anastasia Waugh, The Dog Tooth Fairy, is a UK-based Emmi-pet distributor who offers products, training courses, advice and support about canine dental health and teeth cleaning. Here, she writes about how offering this add-on service could earn you more this year.

W

ith dog ownership skyrocketing since the pandemic, and more four-legged friends living in our households than ever before, teamed with the popularity of cross-bred poodle breeds. The demand for dog grooming services in the UK has grown considerably. Dogs are now such a part of the family unit, and are treated like VIPs in many cases, gone are the days of washing your pet dog in the backyard with a cold hose pipe. Dog grooming clients are now requesting add-on luxury pet spa services, and one that gets asked about the most is teeth cleaning. With up to 85% of dogs having some form of dental health issues by the time they get to age 3, something really drastic needs to be done to look after our dogs’ teeth statistically. Poor dental health and hygiene lead to plaque and tartar building up on the dogs’ teeth, bacteria getting into the gums causing gum disease, inflammation, dental deterioration, tooth loss and in the worst case infections from bacteria passing through the bloodstream and affecting vital organs which leads to a shorter lifespan for our four-legged friends. Now you might be left wondering, how can I offer teeth cleaning? Isn’t this a vet’s job? Vets do a fantastic job of cleaning up dog’s teeth under general anaesthetic with scale and polish and when extractions are required. However dog groomers are the ones who see our clients regularly and can clean dogs’ teeth using an ultrasonic toothbrush to improve overall gum and dental hygiene before they reach the stage of requiring veterinary intervention, how amazing is that? Prevention is always better than cure.

30

totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk

The benefits of adding an ultrasonic toothbrush service

1) You set yourself apart from other groomers in your area by offering a range of services 2) Impress your regular customers by acting as a magnet to attract new clients to your business 3) An amazing way to create a second income stream 4) It’s a lot less physically demanding @totalgroomingmagazineuk

than dog grooming 5) You can earn more money in less time for a low set-up cost. Adding an ultrasonic teeth cleaning service is ideal for dog groomers who are feeling burned out, tired, or have physical health issues and are looking to earn more money this year by working smarter and not harder. RACHEL BEAN MONTHLY

Ambivalence and welfare

Rachel Bean is back once again to give us some fantastic advice from the world of grooming! In this issue, Rachel is giving us some tips on dealing with customer ambivalence, as well as putting animals’ welfare first.

H

appy New Year to all readers of Total Grooming Magazine, and I hope that 2024 is an excellent year for everyone. 2023 seemed to fly past didn’t it, so I hope that in 2024 the fruits of all our hard work will pay off, and we will all reap the benefits in whatever we do. From a personal perspective, the new year is always a very hopeful time, and the break is a chance to reflect on the year gone, and the year ahead. I’m really excited to get back out on the road teaching canine first aid, but I’m also so happy to have met so many lovely people in 2023 and experienced some wonderful moments. This year my Vet On Set business will also be back in full force, making sure that film and television productions with animals are a safe and happy environment for all concerned. Just last month we attended a set and advised on a very simple but important thing... Grapes! After lunch grapes had been on offer and some were scattered on the floor. We raced around to collect them so that the canine actors did not eat them up, grapes are toxic to dogs and it would have been terrible. Yes, a strange example, but such an important one, and shows why we all as pet professionals have a duty to inform and educate our clients too. In the grooming world, you are often the first to spot if something is wrong with a dog, and of course, it is important to have a good relationship with your vet. But what do you do when the client is resistant to health concerns? Here are my top five tips for dealing with customer ambivalence, putting the animal’s welfare first and foremost: Image by Jonas Vincent on Unsplash

@totalgroomingmagazineuk

RACHEL BEAN MONTHLY 1. Be diplomatic

Just because the owner hasn’t spotted a health concern it doesn’t mean that they don’t care. My advice is to always be gentle and diplomatic, the last thing you want is for the owner to feel shame or get defensive.

2. Be firm

If the owner is brushing off the important health concern, it is important to be kind but firm. A good tip is to turn it onto yourself, saying that they have put their trust in you as their pet professional, and the welfare of their dog is your top priority.

3. Listen

There are a number of reasons why an owner may not have been dealing with a pet’s health concern. Fear of high vet fees could be one. Depending on what the health concern is, this may be an opportunity for you to advise based on your own knowledge. Is there a natural remedy that may help clear it up?

4. Appeal to their love for the dog

Every dog owner who cares enough to have their pet groomed will care about their dog to some extent. Appealing to this love and fondness may help you get through to them on a deeper level.

5. Inform the vet

If all else fails and the situation is serious, call the vet for advice. There are things that your vet can do to help, and you can rest in the knowledge that you did all that you could. To find out more about Rachel Bean go to www.rachelbean.co.uk

FELINE FOCUS

Anticipating 2024 Hey, fellow feline enthusiasts! As we bid farewell to 2023 and step into a brand new year, it’s time to take a whisker-twirling journey through the cat grooming industry and explore how the past year has transformed the world of fur, claws, and purrs.

Image by Paul Hanaoka on Unsplash

I

n the ever-evolving landscape of feline care, 2023 turned out to be a pivotal year for cat grooming professionals. The industry witnessed a delightful blend of innovation, trends, and an increased focus on feline well-being, giving groomers new challenges and opportunities to sink their claws into. One of the standout changes in 2023 was the surge in demand for specialised cat grooming services. Cat owners, recognizing the unique needs of their feline companions, sought out groomers who understood the intricacies of cat care. It wasn’t just about a quick brush and a nail trim anymore. Groomers found themselves delving into the realms of cat behaviour, nutrition, and even holistic approaches to ensure the well-rounded health of their feline clientele. The rise of cat behaviourists collaborating with grooming salons became a trend that defined 2023. Cat

groomers were no longer just stylists; they were becoming cat whisperers, deciphering the language of meows and tail flicks to provide a stressfree grooming experience. It was a game-changer as grooming sessions

transformed into bonding moments between groomers and their furry clients. Moreover, technology played a significant role in reshaping the cat grooming landscape. Virtual consultations became a norm, allowing

FELINE FOCUS cat owners to seek advice and tips from professional groomers without leaving the comfort of their homes. Video tutorials on DIY grooming tips for cat parents also gained popularity, fostering a sense of community and shared knowledge within the feline-loving world. 2023 also witnessed a shift towards eco-conscious grooming practices. Cat grooming salons started adopting sustainable and cruelty-free products, aligning with the growing awareness of environmental issues. From biodegradable shampoos to ecofriendly grooming tools, the industry demonstrated its commitment to a greener and more responsible future. The fashion-forward feline took centre stage as cat grooming trends leaned towards creative and stylised grooming options. From temporary colour treatments to intricate pawdicures, groomers showcased their artistic flair, transforming cats into walking works of art. Social media platforms became the runway for these feline fashionistas, with hashtags like #PurrfectlyGroomed trending and inspiring cat lovers around the globe. 2023 marked a fantastic year when mobile cat grooming services gained traction. With the hustle and bustle of modern life, cat owners appreciated the convenience of having a professional groomer come to their doorstep. Mobile grooming vans equipped with state-ofthe-art facilities became a common sight, offering a stress-free alternative for both cats and their human companions. As we look ahead to 2024, the excitement within the cat grooming community is palpable. The trends set in 2023 have laid the foundation for a dynamic and ever-evolving industry. The integration of technology, a deeper understanding of feline behaviour, and a commitment to sustainability are expected to continue shaping the future of cat grooming. I, for one, am thrilled to be part of this journey. The coming year holds the promise of even more innovation, challenges, and adorable feline clients. The cat grooming industry is not just about styling fur; it’s about nurturing the well-being of our beloved cats and creating a positive and enriching experience for them. So here’s to 2024, fellow cat groomers! May it be a year filled with whisker-

twitching success, purrsonal growth, and the joy that comes with making our feline friends feel like the royalty they truly are.

Health & Safety A cornerstone of any business is grounded health and safety precautions. Let’s find out some of the benefits! Image by Karsten Winegeart on Unsplash.

HEALTH & SAFETY

Safety first! We all know that running a dog grooming salon is a furry, fun adventure, but let’s take a moment to talk about the not-so-glamorous side of the business – health and safety.

Image by Alvan Nee on Unsplash

I

f you’re reading this, you’re probably as passionate about pooches as us here at TGM! It’s not the most entertaining topic, but trust me, it’s like the secret sauce that keeps your salon thriving. So, grab a cup of coffee, or better yet, a dog biscuit, and let’s chat about why health and safety should be your New Year’s resolution for 2024. First things first – why bother? Well, for starters, think about the precious furballs we’re responsible for. Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, with unique personalities and, sometimes, unique hygiene habits. Ensuring a safe and healthy environment isn’t just about meeting regulations; it’s about creating a haven where our four-legged friends can feel comfortable, secure, and, of course, fabulously pampered. One of the most crucial aspects of health and safety in your salon is cleanliness. I’m not just talking about

a quick sweep here and there. I mean a deep clean that would make your grandma proud. Disinfect those grooming tables, sanitize your tools, and don’t forget to mop the floors regularly.

42

@totalgroomingmagazineuk

totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk

A clean salon isn’t just for show – it’s the first line of defence against nasty germs and keeps both your clients and your team in tip-top shape. Next up, let’s talk about the tools of

MADE IN BRITAIN

HEALTH & SAFETY

Image by Kelly Sikkema on Unsplash

the trade. Clippers, scissors, brushes – they’re like extensions of our hands. But here’s the deal: they can also become breeding grounds for bacteria if not handled correctly. Make it a habit to clean and disinfect your tools after every grooming session. Invest in high-quality, easy-to-clean equipment to make your life a whole lot easier. Your clients might not notice a sparkling pair of scissors, but they’ll definitely appreciate the extra effort when they pick up their pooch. Now, let’s get real about those pesky allergies. Whether it’s the fur or the shampoo, allergies can be a buzzkill for both your clients and your team. Opt for hypoallergenic products and be upfront with your clients about the ingredients you use. A sneezing client is not a happy client, and a sneezing groomer? Well, that’s just a disaster waiting to happen. Remember, a sniffle-free salon is a happy salon. Okay, let’s talk about the big D – danger. Dogs are adorable, but let’s face it – they can be a handful. Investing in proper restraint tools and training your staff on how to handle unpredictable behaviour can prevent accidents waiting to pounce. No one wants a tangled-up groomer-dog dance that ends in disaster.

It’s not just about protecting your staff; it’s about creating a safe space for the pups too. A stressed-out pooch isn’t going to enjoy their spa day, and that’s bad for business. Oh, and speaking of stress – let’s talk about ergonomics. We spend our days bending, reaching, and wrestling with furballs. Your back might be strong, but it’s not invincible. Invest in ergonomic grooming tables and chairs, and encourage your team to take breaks and stretch those muscles. A healthy groomer is a happy groomer, and a happy groomer means happy clients. Now, I know what you’re thinking – this

all sounds like a lot of work. But here’s the kicker: it’s an investment that pays off big time. Happy, healthy dogs mean satisfied clients who’ll keep coming back. Word of mouth spreads like wildfire, and soon, you’ll have a salon full of wagging tails and smiling faces. So, as we embark on this journey into 2024, let’s make health and safety our top priority. A clean, safe salon isn’t just a legal obligation; it’s the key to a thriving business. Your clients, your team, and most importantly, your furry customers, will thank you. Here’s to a pawsitively fabulous and safe year ahead!

GROOMERS AROUND THE WORLD

The art of French dog grooming

In the world of pet care, the art of dog grooming is a universal language spoken by dedicated professionals who strive to enhance the well-being and appearance of our beloved canine companions. While dog grooming practices vary across borders, there’s much that UK dog groomers can learn from their French counterparts.

T

oday, we’re exploring the unique aspects of dog grooming in France and highlighting valuable lessons that can be applied in the UK .The French Approach to Dog Grooming. In France, dog grooming is not merely a functional task but a craft that emphasizes style, elegance, and meticulous care. French dog groomers are known for their attention to detail, blending practical grooming necessities with an artistic touch. They understand that grooming is not just about hygiene but also about enhancing the dog’s natural beauty.

One notable aspect of French dog grooming is the use of breed-specific styling. Unlike the standardized cuts often seen in the UK, French groomers take into account the distinct characteristics of each breed, tailoring their grooming techniques to highlight the dog’s individual charm. This personalized approach results in dogs that not only look well-groomed but also radiate a unique personality. Beyond grooming techniques, French dog groomers excel in creating a welcoming and relaxing ambience in their salons. The emphasis is not only on the comfort of the dogs but also

on providing a positive experience for pet owners. French groomers prioritize client communication, discussing preferences and expectations to ensure the grooming process aligns with the owner’s vision for their furry friend. UK dog groomers can benefit from adopting a more client-centric approach, creating an environment where pet owners feel heard and understood. Establishing a strong rapport with clients can lead to greater customer satisfaction and loyalty. For UK dog groomers eager to incorporate French grooming techniques into their skill set, there are various

GROOMERS AROUND THE WORLD educational opportunities available. Many grooming schools in France offer specialised courses that focus on the artistry and techniques unique to French dog grooming. Schools for canine grooming in Paris provide comprehensive training programs that cover everything from breed-specific styling to the artistic elements of grooming. The courses are designed for both beginners and experienced groomers looking to refine their skills. In addition to formal education, UK dog groomers can also attend workshops and seminars hosted by accomplished French groomers. These events often feature hands-on demonstrations, allowing participants to observe and practice the artistry of French grooming under expert guidance. As UK dog groomers seek to enhance their skills, incorporating some key French techniques can elevate their grooming practices. Understanding breed-specific styling and embracing a more personalized approach will not only set them apart in the industry but also satisfy clients who appreciate the uniqueness of their dog’s appearance. UK groomers can benefit from adopting a holistic approach to grooming, considering not only the physical aspects but also the emotional well-being of the dogs. Incorporating relaxation techniques and creating a calm environment can contribute to a positive grooming experience for both pets and owners. Lastly, in the world of dog grooming, each country brings its own flair and methodology to the table. French dog groomers stand out for their emphasis on style, personalized approaches, and attention to the overall experience for pets and owners alike. UK dog groomers can enrich their skill set by exploring the nuances of French grooming through educational opportunities and incorporating these techniques into their practices. By doing so, they can elevate the standard of dog grooming in the UK and provide a more fulfilling experience for both canine clients and their devoted owners.
