Brits Trust Dogs More Than Spouses
From spooning in bed and planning special birthdays, to thoughtful meals and planned alone time together, new research reveals there is nobody more in love than a British dog owner and their beloved pooch.
An amusing survey of 2,008 UK dog owners revealed more than a third ‘trusted’ their dog more than their lovers or partners, claiming they would be more inclined to confide or ‘tell all’ to their dog.
The new data, by leading pet treat Peamutt Butter, found when it came to the ‘pawfect’ love story, more than half of those surveyed said they would rather hang out with their fur baby than go on dates to meet a potential new love interest.
More shockingly, around a third (36%) confessed they had ‘ghosted’ people to spend time with their dog.
It’s grave news for those already shacked up, the data reveals there are three people in your relationship. One in 10 dog owners surveyed admitted they kick their partner or spouse out of bed for their dog, with a similar number allowing their dog to call ‘shotgun’ ahead of their better half on long car journeys.
Showering man’s best friend with gifts for birthdays, one in five Brits (19%) said they spend more on their dogs presents than their partners, with 58% spending as much as £100 to celebrate the annual milestone.
Counsellor and relationship expert, Georgina Sturmer, said: “It’s no surprise to learn that our furry friends take centre stage, in the stress and strain of everyday life, our dogs offer us something special.
“In therapy, we talk about three core conditions: unconditional positive regard, empathy and authenticity. Our dogs are role models for this. They offer us that sense of unconditional love and they walk alongside us in all of life’s ups and downs. And they are genuine and authentic in everything that they do.
When we look at it this way, it’s easy to understand why we find our connection with our pets to be so rewarding and enjoyable – and our focus.”
She added: “Dogs also have an innate ability to seek happiness in the simple pleasures of life. Eating, sleeping, walking, enjoying nature. They keep us grounded with what’s really important.”
Have you ever had a dog-mad friend stand you up at the last minute? Well, 43% confessed they often cancel on their human friends in favour of hanging out with their canine pals. And 29% of people said they had stopped spending time with friends and family who don’t like their dog.
Totally besotted and utterly dog-nuts,
of the 2,008 people surveyed by Peamutt Butter, 69 people had held a baby shower for their puppy. And 150 people confessed to wearing matching outfits, such as coats, sunglasses or jumpers to their dog.
Sally Addenbrook, brand marketing manager from Peamutt Butter, said: “When we created Peamutt Butter we made it because we believed our dogs were missing out on the treat of peanut butter. And every dog-mad pet owner wants to give their dogs the very best.
“We wanted something that was made solely for dogs and could be spread on their toys or lick mats, to enrich and calm them and to help build a stronger bond between human and dog.”

Warmer weather can impact appetite
Dog owners should adjust meals in hot weather. The creator of a superfood dog feed that was launched last year is urging dog owners to adjust their pet’s meals as summer approaches.
In warmer weather, a dog’s metabolism slows and the appetite decreases which means it is even more of a reason for dog owners to ensure they are feeding the right quality diet to their dog.
Fallowcopse Feeds has become the go-to kibble for breeders who want an alternative to the BARF diet (raw feed). The grain-free kibble has seen an increase in sales as more and more breeders and owners adopt a kibble that has been slowly cooked, preserving protein, and helping to provide a balanced diet.
Jordan Bogris, Founder of Fallowcope Feeds says, “Just as we all adjust our diets in the summer months and embrace lighter meals, it’s important for dog owners to realise that they must adapt meals to suit their pets. Owners will see their dog’s appetite decrease in the summer months, but they shouldn’t be alarmed. By feeding high-quality kibble which includes superfoods and high protein, owners can rest assured their pets are still taking in the right nutrients.”
Top tips on summer feeding include:
· Feed in the shade
· Feed during cooler parts of the day
· Learn to adjust your feeding in line with your dog’s eating habits
The founder of Fallowcopse Feeds launched a search to find an alternative feed to the BARF diet and traced a feed with a sustainably sourced source of protein, with a variety of vegetables, herbs and supplements – including superfoods.
Fallowcopse Feeds includes superfoods such as pomegranate – a source of antioxidants and a natural inflammatory with antimicrobial properties. Aimed at all dogs, from puppy through to adulthood, including those sensitive to allergens, the grains are replaced with another source of carbohydrate to ensure a perfectly balanced diet.
Bogris, who breeds dogs in Hampshire continues, “If owners learn to understand the changes their dog go through, throughout the year, then they can adjust their meals and support their pet’s nutrition. Our kibble is highly nutritious so if a dog has a reduced appetite in the summer months, it is still going to be receiving all the correct nutrients it needs.”
Prices start from £4.25 for treats and £42.50 for kibble.
National Pet Shop Day
More than just a Store: National Pet Shop Day to celebrate services and solutions on the high street.
When Johnson’s Veterinary Products surveyed pet owners as part of its 2023 report into UK purchasing habits, it discovered that over half of respondents (57%) would speak to the vet in order to remedy a pet’s flea issue, despite the majority stating they find pet shops and stores to be ‘knowledgeable’ and with an opinion that could be trusted.
It is this startling fact that has led Johnson’s to announce the launch of the first-ever National Pet Shop Day, as a way of celebrating the huge breadth of support, products, services and advice that high street retailers are able to provide directly to pet owners who have concerns about their animal’s health and wellbeing.
On Saturday 13th July 2024, Johnson’s will be encouraging pet shops and stores across the UK to throw open their doors and invite pet owners to come in and discover more about how they can offer viable, affordable options for dealing with commonly occurring minor ailments such as fleas, ticks, worms, or other general healthcare issues.
Paul Gwynn, Managing Director at Johnson’s Veterinary Products, explained: “Pet shops are the local health and wellbeing hubs of the pet world, but we find that many people are often so rooted to their longstanding routines, that they perhaps don’t even consider that they
can also get experienced advice about a whole host of frequent minor pet healthcare issues whilst picking-up their other pet essentials in store.
“Pet shops and stores have a wealth of knowledge within their teams that has been built over many years, in some cases decades. They can often help to spot the signs of and give advice about fleas, ticks, worms and other minor healthcare problems and therefore are well placed to provide practical advice and product solutions for both these, and a range of other, more general, wellbeing concerns directly in store.
“With National Pet Shop Day, we want to mark the ongoing, positive contribution that these pet shops and stores make to society, and in doing so provide animal lovers with the confidence that they can handle their
pet’s conditions effectively and efficiently, without always breaking the bank. These retailers are far more than simply a point of purchase – they are the bedrock of the pet-owning community and are always ready and willing to help.”
National Pet Shop Day will be backed with an extensive press and social media campaign, with Johnson’s providing a number of product samples, and procurement offers to those retailers getting involved.
A dedicated website crammed with promotional ideas, downloadable content, branded goodies, and practical marketing advice will also be available to help pet shops, stores and retailers stimulate increased footfall and celebrate the day to its fullest.

Stress-free trip for cats
Taking a cat to the vet can be a daunting task, both for the pet and the owner. Cats are highly sensitive to changes in their environment, and the unfamiliar smells and sounds of a veterinary clinic can worsen their stress and anxiety.
This makes the journey to the vet and the visit itself particularly challenging. So, how can cat owners reduce the stress and anxiety during vet visits?
“Many of us firmly fall into the cat lovers category, but even as feline fans, there are times when our cats can drive us crazy” says James Whitten, Marketing Manager at petGuard. Leading pet insurer petGuard shares effective tips on how to ease vet visits anxiety in cats.
Vet home visits
Cats are very particular about their territory and smells that they associate with home, so taking them to a new location which smells of other animals and various chemicals is part of the problem. If a cat is showing signs of anger or aggression, then asking a vet for a home visit can be a huge help.
Transportation
The saga of a vet visit with a particularly angry cat falls into two components –getting the cat to the vet, then dealing with them once they’re on the vet’s table. If having trouble getting a cat into its cat box in the first place, it makes a lot of things tricky – not just vet visits but any transportation.
It can be effective for cat owners to help their cats view the cat box as an appealing place. They should take the box out from storage and leave it where the cat can get used to it and sniff it. Once the cat is used to the box, owners can place treats inside to encourage the cat to explore. A cautious cat may only put a paw in at first but will venture further over time.
Safety first
Cat scratches and bites can be painful, but they pose a greater threat too. Cats can carry nasty germs and bacteria that cause infections like the Cat Scratch Disease, which can be life-threatening. When handling an aggressive cat, it is advisable to wear gardening gloves and a thick jumper. Keep the cat away from the face and try to handle it in a calm and firm manner. Cats can pick up on stress, so the calmer one is, the better the situation is likely to go.
“There are many things cat owners can do to make a vet appointment seem more appealing to their cat. However, it is important to put the safety of yourself and your cat first” warns Whitten. Discover more tips on: www.petguard.co.uk/taking-angry-cat-tovet - Article supplied by petGuard

Simpsons Professional Grooming Supplies
Established in 1960, Simpsons remains the UK’s premier supplier of pet grooming products. With over 6 decades of experience, it has a wealth of knowledge and expertise, few other retailers can claim. Their passion and dedication to the industry has helped drive a number of successful product innovations, benefitting thousands of pet groomers and the welfare of domesticated pets. But, how did it all begin?
Although the company has been going for over 60 years, the Simpson family has been associated with animals since the late 1930’s and 40’s. During this era, they owned a number of pet shops in East London, selling landfowl and other small animals. Although these establishments were sadly lost to bombing, during the war, it inevitably sparked passion for future generations to continue working with animals.
After the war, Ernest William Simpson began to take a keen interest in Poodles which, continued to be a popular breed at that time. So much so, he eventually decided to breed them under his own registered ‘Montagis’ kennel name.
With a growing number of dogs to look after, he quickly became acquainted with bathing, drying and clipping them. A frequent task, often made laborious due to inadequate equipment of the time. This frustration eventually lead Ernest to build his own industrial animal dryer. An appliance that would quickly draw the attention of other kennels and grooming shops in the local area. After some persuasion and a period of time to perfect its design, Ernest proudly launched the ‘Turbo’ animal dryer. A historical event that would lead to the incorporation of Simpsons of Langley Limited.
Following its success, Simpsons later went on to develop the ‘TurboAir’ cabin dryer, as well as the unbreakable ‘Select’ electric animal clipper. These British made products quickly established Simpsons as a major manufacturer. However, rival products would soon emerge from brands including Allbrooks with its range of Tornado dryers. This competitive rivalry lasted many years until 2008, when Simpsons acquired Allbrooks in a deal that would make it the most popular manufacturer in Europe. Over the years, Simpsons and
Allbrooks have exported dryers to many other European countries including, France, Germany and Spain.
However, Simpsons range of products doesn’t stop at professional dryers. Over time, Simpsons has strived to develop a number of exclusive brands in product categories including clippers, blades, scissors, grooming tools, work wear and other accessories. It has also created a complete range of professional coat care products, providing grooming businesses with a one-stop solution for all their salon needs.
Simpsons continues to be a family-run business, managed by a third-generation and dedicated team of knowledgeable staff. Their customers enjoy access to both online and traditional telephone sales, with friendly customer service advisors available to offer help and advice. Furthermore, all professional appliances are guaranteed by Simpsons, with in-house technicians ready to provide a fast and reliable service for electrical equipment repairs. As a small business, Simpsons acknowledges and appreciates the importance of trusted business relationships and dependable customer service.

Nutrition
Delicious and nutritious! Here’s some handy info on what you can do as a dog groomer to inform your clientele about nutrition. Image by FLOUFFY on Unsplash.
Delicious!
Pet nutrition should be at the forefront of any dog groomer’s mind whilst at work. Back in the day, one brand of dog food might have reigned supreme, but now there are so many options to choose from you might be wondering what is the best type for our four-legged friends.
It’s no secret that the world of dog grooming has advanced leaps and bounds over the years, and within the doggy world, that doesn’t just stop with a haircut! Dog food, health and eco-conscious decisions alike have all culminated to form some pretty amazing advancements in what our furry pals should be consuming as a part of their diet!
Not only are most of these dog food types available for consumers, but yourselves as dog groomers also! You’re going to be the first point of call for many pet owners out there, so stock up on some knowledge that you can pass on to your clientele and prepare for some tasty (pun somewhat intended) results!
Firstly, you should be looking into the different types of food available. From ingredients to environmental impact, to how natural the things that go into the food are, we understand that coming to grips with it all can appear like a daunting task at first, but rest assured that understanding nutrition and how to pass it on to your clientele can become a relatively easy task.
So let’s talk about why understanding pet food and nutrition can be extremely beneficial to you as a groomer. You’ll be sure to notice that pet owners are coming to you a lot more frequently than they would be a vet, so when there’s a client that you see regularly, you’ll get to know them like they’re the back of your
pair of clippers! It would be easy to tell when something doesn’t quite seem right with them.
That being said, pet owners will be likely to turn to you with any nutritional info they might be seeking. We’ve spoken to so many groomers who are often faced with nutritional questions from clients.
So naturally, it’s important that you’re keeping yourself informed with the latest and most up-to-date information that you can pass on to your clientele about this topic. It’s almost an essential part of the job and basically completes the foundational pyramid of what you should be in the loop with as a pet groomer. Knowing your stuff is so crucial in this
day and age as a pet groomer, so to be taken seriously and really make yourself stand out in front of the crowd you’re going to want to stock up on all of the latest info.
Being able to dispense some knowledge about what a pet should or shouldn’t be eating right off the bat when someone asks will do nothing but elevate your reputation, especially from a word-of-mouth perspective. It helps create a respect for the craft that can only be appreciated by a loyal customer and will really help you to build a foundation amongst the dog grooming community and your peers.
All of this goes hand in hand with the fact that you can also stock pet foods within your dog grooming business. Be sure to find some reputable sources of nutritional food, pair that with some suave marketing and you’ve got yourself some extra income to boot! It’s an added bonus when you know that dog will be eating some food that’s genuinely good for them too!
It’s not uncommon that we hear about dog groomers being asked for nutritional advice, so you must stock yourself up on the latest tips!
Be sure to reach out to suppliers to find out who can give you the best for our canine companions.
Not only can this aid in boosting revenue, but your clientele will be happier in general. You’ll notice happy pet owners, more waggy tails, easier-togroom fur and more! Even showing off a healthier coat on your Instagram page from one of your grooms can’t hurt your business!
That being said, let’s take a little look into why nutrition can have a positive impact on a groom.
Much like us humans, a poor diet can have many effects on skin, hair growth and the quality of hair grown. With a lack of nutrition in a diet, you can notice a lot of dryness, irritation and more.
There are so many variations of things to keep an eye out for when looking at an ingredients list, you might not know where to start, but it all comes down to research! A dog’s age, breed, and other factors can all have an impact on what types of food they might need, so finding a good source of education in this sector is key.
There are even things such as allergies to consider when it comes to a dog’s diet, again, much like us humans.
Irritatingly, there isn’t one answer that we’ll be able to apply to all dogs as a whole, as each one is different, from personality to their happy little faces. This is where your own education and research will come into play. Knowing your clientele here is such a bonus, so be sure to chat with your pet owners to see what they’ve noticed, if their personal vets have suggested anything and to find out what might be a perfect fit nutritionwise for their canine companions.
A diet won’t always necessarily be the case for a dog being unhealthy, as
a negative home life or lack of exercise could also contribute, but starting a healthy and nutritional diet is a fantastic way to start when your clientele is asking for basic suggestions. Once again, it comes down to you, the groomers, to utilise your skills and recommend what you think is best for your furry friends. Guide your clientele to what you think they may need for their pups, and build rapport to further grow your business. Lastly, it’s important to consider the age of the dogs you’re recommending nutritional info to. A nutritional diet is so important for the growing and developmental stages of a puppy’s life, so ensure that you’ve done your research into the best nutrient-rich products to pass on to your clientele, especially when they’ve got some young doggos in the mix. Hopefully, you’ll see that happy chappy as a return customer for many years to come!
Ultimately, knowing your nutritional info and being able to recommend it to your clientele will do nothing but build your business a positive reputation, ensure that you’re aiding in building a healthier future for your furry friends and let you end your day with the knowledge that you’ve helped build a positive outlook in this fur-filled world of petcare!
Mandi Dale
Mandi Dale, the owner and lead groomer of Scrappy Doo’s Dog and Cat Grooming Studio is Based in Brandon on the Suffolk and Norfolk border. Working from a purpose-built studio at her home. She has college trainees every year for work experience and one employed assistant Debbie.
Mandi started grooming dogs and cats over 30 years ago, learning through a YTS scheme to complete a City and Guilds qualification, earning £75 a week for a 40-hour week. She used her skills within animal rescue centres to support them and build experience, going on to become the manager of the salon she trained at.
Later starting her own business, Mandi wanted to work more at the pace of the dogs’ and cats’ needs, finding a balance to improve her working practices for the most positive outcomes and experiences for the pets whilst, growing a thriving business that remained comparative commercially with other grooming services.
Mandi uses high-quality organic products, ethically sourced that benefit the pets and the environment. Next year the plan is to go solar-powered for the studio. Planning ahead for ethical change is an important aspect of the future for Scrappy Doo’s.
A selling point for Scrappy Doo’s is supporting two small charities every month. Barking Mad Dog Rescue, based in Scotland, and Margs Moggies Cat
Rescue based in Bradford on Avon. Customers are welcome, knowing having their pets groomed also benefits rescues at each visit. She explains it as customers’ pets helping other animals not as fortunate as they are (yet)!
Scrappy Doo’s blooms to grow with the changing needs of pets, and continuous learning with these sometimes with new challenges. During COVID lockdowns, animals became isolated. Unable to be socialised well,
many more nervous and anxious young dogs was the outcome.
A large part of Scrappy’s work is with dogs that have been declined by other groomers due to the severity of dogs’ fear of aggression or trauma, leaving them often for many years without basic grooming, or being sedated by the vet to achieve touching the dogs.
Buddy’s mum brought him for desensitisation and counter-conditioning work with Mandi. Her words of “you will

GROOMERS OF THE MONTH
need to muzzle him and use one of those dog straight jackets”, told Mandi of the anxiety with his fear aggression.
Buddy a 10-year-old Corgi cross had a lifetime of fear behind his behaviour. Having a small circle of people he trusted to varying degrees, working with Buddy and his mum most weeks for around half to one hour over seven months. Visits where nothing happened except he was free to explore the environment and growl and bark, with no response from Mandi.
Introducing a bowl of chicken, Buddy chose to move towards Mandi, looking at the bowl for a chicken treat. Buddy learnt the process, introducing him to touch as he got the treat. Moving to use tools for chicken and stopped if he indicated concerns by a low growl or his body language.
Mandi claims that by using a type of tapping she learnt in coma and trauma work with people, she found tuning into the dogs’ pulse rate and lightly tapping in time on either side of the dogs’ chest brings about a relative calm along with quiet encouragement.
It can dramatically change the fear responses. Buddy has been able to stop barking, growling and biting to being fully groomed. Buddy’s mum has been tearful at times with how well her boy has done. She says “he rushed to the front door when Mandi is mentioned, excited to visit”. He’s been allowing family to stroke him and he’s no longer barking at every sound. Given choice and understanding, change continues to happen outside of the sessions.
Akira, a 6-year-old collie cross, visited because she can be fear-reactive. Akira is not vocal with warnings. Awareness of her body and facial language indicates to stop.
Mandi says this lets Akira know her fears are being heard. The same technique used with Buddy has reduced her anxiety around touch, dry grooms and slowly nails and dryer sounds. Akira has started readily mounting the grooming table by choice. Mandi says it’s so worth it, Akira’s mum never thought we would get this far, and certainly not as quickly.
Mandi created and promotes a Triangle of Choice and Change (TOCC). At the top of the Triangle is the pet, with the owner and Groomer at the bottom corners.
All three participants have a choice. The dog is given a choice to take part in a session and stop when they choose to. The owners have a choice to make this commitment to change by keeping the continuity of appointments and any homework Mandi gives. Mandi chooses to do this work to give the furry family members a chance. A chance to do it a different way for a positive outcome and experience.
Some dogs don’t cope well in a salon environment. That has to be part of the assessment. Debbie started grooming in people’s own homes under her own business Groom and Go this year.
GSD, Pam, came for desensitisation sessions but it became clear that she would have an upset stomach on returning home. Mandi collaborated
with Debbie to continue the process in Pam’s own home. It’s a game changer for Pam’s individual needs. Debbie is achieving change with Pam, making a good outcome choice.
When she started grooming, businesses kept very much to themselves, not sharing information or support.
“It’s a very different world now, with many support groups online. Don’t be afraid to contact other local groomers. Help each other. There will be times when each of us needs to reach out. Enjoy it build it and make grooming your own choice of how to go about it.”
Mandi wanted to thank the owners of Buddy, Akira and Pam who gave her permission to share their experiences with her in this article.
Grooming longhaired cats
Back in the April 2024 Issue of Total Grooming Magazine we looked at grooming short-haired cats and now it’s time to turn our attention to long-haired cats. By Katie Gwilt - Founder of The Kat Lady
As a cat groomer, I work with a lot of cats who have medium to long hair across many different breeds. Some of the common ones I encounter are Persians, long-haired domestic cats, Maine Coons and Siberian cats. Each individual cat has its own needs and fur type to be carefully assessed, but there are some general things to always check and consider when working with cats with long fur.
Have a look at the cat’s face
Persians for example are flat-faced and brachycephalic and so can often struggle with their breathing. You may want to trim around their face and ruff a little more than with other breeds so that when they lay their head down or are grooming there is more space for airflow around the nose and mouth. Always
check with the cat’s human beforehand though before making any drastic changes around the face and you can always start with a little trim and see if it benefits the cat. Never trim the whiskers (unless in the very small instance they are curling around and back into the eye) as they need these for communication and coordination.
Always pay special attention to the armpits
Cats don’t sweat through their body skin like us humans do (imagine what a sweaty cat would look like!). Instead, they sweat through their paw pads and a little through their nose. I do find that a lot of longer-haired cats because of that lovely little loaf pose they sit in, can cause knots and mats to form in their armpits though. They do like to lie on damp grass and soil and the wet doesn’t dry properly in
the tight space. It’s not often somewhere their human can get to so always get right into the creases and check for sneaky tangles.
Likewise always check between their back legs for hidden knots and mats
Another place cats aren’t a big fan of being checked by their humans. These can get knotted for the exact same reasons as the armpits. Lying on damp surfaces and outdoors often causes knots tight inside those back legs, which can cause a lot of pain and mobility issues. Always be extra careful with older cats who are likely to have joint pain in this area and always move the back legs in a natural direction. Some cats will roll, others will prefer to stand and more will be more comfortable in your lap with their back along your chest. Experiment
with each cat and find out which positions it likes best to check this area.
A Sanitary/Hygiene Trim can do Wonders
Cats and their cling-ons! Cats often jump out of the litter tray pretty sharpish, especially in multi-cat houses and can leave some faeces stuck in their bottom fur. Most are not big fans of their humans helping wash this area and do prefer to keep themselves clean. Their humans also prefer to have a clean bed and sofa so giving this area a shave and a trim can do wonders for the relationship between the cat and their humans.
Consider a teddy or lion cut if absolutely necessary
I don’t do lion cuts lightly personally (in the UK it isn’t as hot usually as many other countries), but some of my cat clients really do benefit from them. I find it’s mostly the flat-faced breeds who really struggle in the heat and have a very thick coat. I often offer a teddy (comb) cut instead and trim the tummy short to help them with their grooming and keep their temperature lower. Their fur is naturally temperature regulating in the hot and cold weather, but having shorter tummy fur does help the air circulate better in the summer months.
Educate the Human on the correct tools and how to maintain between appointments
I find this is so important and something I am really passionate about. A lot of my clients first come to me with very matted long-haired cats. They have been brushing them and doing their best, just using the wrong tools and not knowing how to comb them properly. I usually advise on a coarse comb and show them how to get to the root of the fur. A lot were previously using slicker brushes which brush the top nicely, but underneath can mat and pelt without them realising it. I recommend regular grooming to these clients but try to empower them to be able to keep their cats healthy and comfortable between visits. If they are using the right tools that don’t pull, then it is also a lovely way to help the owner and cat bond and keep my job easier as they know what to expect when they see the comb. www.thekatlady.co.uk
Adding Value
Investing in yourself, and your business, is of the utmost importance! Let’s look at why value is vital for business growth. Image by Towfiqu barbhuiya on Unsplash.
Proving yourself
Ensuring that you’re standing out amongst the crowd in 2024 is one thing, but how can you really ensure that you’re adding value to your business to ensure that customers will want more? Let’s dive in…
Firstly, let’s take a little deep dive into what value is considered to be. When you’re a customer, you want to give money or a service and receive something in return. I think that much we can all agree on.
So, from a business standpoint, what can you do to ensure that your customers will see more value in what you do as opposed to your competitors? Is it adding more to your grooms? Maybe adding more benefits to a first visit? Supplying a small bottle of sample shampoo before a customer buys?
Simply put, going above and beyond in situations like these can add more value to your business, spreading some awesome word-of-mouth conversations and hopefully more potential clients!
If you’re someone who’s just breaking out into the world of owning a dog grooming business, you might be scratching your head a little about where
a good place to start might be, but don’t worry, the TGM Team are going to be doing their best today to break everything down for you piece by piece, from dissecting what added value might equate to, to ways that you yourself can add more value to your grooming business.
You can honestly say it incredibly simply, added value within your business is exactly what it says on the tin. It’s the value that you can add to your products, services and more to give more to your clientele.
For example, there are some groomers out there who hire vets and pet nutritionists to offer nutritional advice along with a groom for any clients who might be looking to find out a little more about that sort of thing. When a client walks away with a little more, in this case, knowledge, that is added value to your business.
Maybe you can even offer photography services to compliment your grooms. Barbers, stylists, hairdressers, and even tattooists often do this to give their clients something to post on social media, which also can turn into more advertising for your business! As long as the client is getting more bang for their buck, it can be considered adding value.
The next thing that you’re going to want to think about is the question of why it’s actually important to add value in the first place!
In layman’s terms, the more things you offer, the more you can increase your perceived value to your clientele.
When value is added, over time you can increase your revenue stream, grow your client base, and make yourself stand out from competitors in the long run.
Increasing what perceived worth a product has might also see more clients

ADDING VALUE
wanting to get their hands on it! This over time can let you charge a little more for the services or products you’re offering, as there will be more demand.
That being said, ensure that you’re not springing surprise new prices on your existing clientele! They are the foundation of your entire business and need to be shown that they matter and won’t get tossed aside.
We’re not saying to not increase your prices, just be considerate of your existing clientele and their expectations. When this balance is achieved, you’ll see gradual business growth and you can pat yourself on the back for a job well done! Adding value to your products is something that should only see positive results for you and your business. Something that we often see is pairing things with, well, other things! Instead of offering a range of shampoos, give your clientele the option and range of what they can select and choose to pay for. Then, add their selection to your grooming process!
You can also choose to work with more renowned brands. Consider the brands you’re stocking, and ensure that you’re labelling the prices accordingly. Perceived value is key to the clientele here, so keep that in mind!
Promoting a luxurious sense within your salon might attract more customers, but be wary of ones who might not
ADDING VALUE
think that this is the way forward. It pays to know your audience well in these circumstances. As long as the pooches are looked after with the quality they deserve, that’s all that really matters when it comes down to it!
You can always add extra features to the products that you’re selling, also. Instead of simply selling collars, sell collars with personalised tags for the pooches. Instead of selling bowls, sell two-in-one bowls for both food and drink together. It’s about what you can add and make more practically valuable to a customer when thinking products-wise.
Be sure to advertise this, also! When the latest car model comes on the market, the information that gets spread around is about all of the new, exciting features, not the old ones that people can commonly get from anywhere.
We briefly mentioned how standing out from the crowd is important when adding value. What we mean by this is that you should be looking to do things that people can’t get, see or do anywhere else. Find a niche that people haven’t locked into within your local area and spread the word that you’re the only one around doing said thing! This adds value to your services as a whole and shows potential clientele that you’re willing to break the mould.
This also adds value to your brand!
Convenience is one of your customer’s closest friends, and this is something that may be considered valuable to most! Going out of your way to work certain hours for certain clients, or delivering a result a little faster might not always be the worst thing for your reputation!
Consider going portable for a client who struggles to make it to you due to health concerns, for instance. Ensure that you’re doing what you can to be a valuable part of your community by making your business convenient. Lastly, we want to emphasise the importance of customer service. Whether it’s a friendly dog, a chilled-out cat or even your human clients who want to have a coffee and a chat, customer service and a true dedication to doing your best is what’s really going to help set your business apart from so many others.
Keep learning, stay vigilant in knowing what’s best for the animals, show you care and you’ll hopefully see some loyal return clientele for many years to come!
Feline frenzy
This month has been feline madness, but also a very sad time as we said goodbye to our beloved dog Wisp. By Rachel Bean.
Italk a lot in this column about Chilli, our younger dog, who comes with me to first aid sessions and even starred as Linda Biscuits in the BAFTA award-winning Late Night Lycett, but Wisp really is a dog in a million.
She has been my faithful friend for 15 years, and from appearing on stage in a production of Mice and Men, to being the face of senior dogs for Pets At Home (her last showbiz job), she really has seen a bit of life.
I will miss our loyal, loving and funny Wisp every single day, and would like to thank everyone who follows my social media pages for the outpouring of support. As animal lovers we all get it, this is the worst feeling ever.
So now to this month’s feline frenzy! I have been microchipping cats, and in one week alone saw 30 animals who needed the procedure. I’ve been doing home visits and after the new law came in it really has been very busy indeed.
I’ve really been heartened by the number of responsible pet owners in Greater Manchester, but one word. Wow. It has been an incredibly busy time with the cats, but I am happy to see that owners are taking their responsibilities
and the new law seriously.
Seeing this many cats has also given me a chance to check them over too, so there are plenty of cats out there who are happier and healthier as a result.
It has also been funny to hear all the fabulous names that owners have given to their moggies, from Boris, Jelly and Dave to even Freddy Krueger it’s been a really interesting and sometimes funny
time, and it’s been nice for the cats to have their home visit which takes away some of the stress.
Microchipping is also for welfare reasons, lost, injured and deceased cats can be reunited more easily if you get it done, so it is very important.
I actually found a percentage of cats were actually already microchipped unbeknownst to the owner, so this was an opportunity to change the details to theirs on the database.
Even indoor cats now need to have a microchip, so many of these cats were very pampered indeed.
From the 10th of June, it became law that all pet cats in England need to have a microchip before they reach the age of 20 weeks. This means that there is a backlog of un-microchipped cats that pet professionals need to see.
There is no shame in coming forward as there might be a number of reasons why people might not have had their cat chipped in the past. But now that this new law has arrived it’s important to get your cat booked in, as you could risk a fine if you don’t.
This week’s first aid advice is more of a warning, as I know that many gardeners are looking at planting bulbs and seeds as the weather warms up.
But don’t forget to think of your dogs, as some of these bulbs are incredibly poisonous!
Tulip, crocus and daffodil bulbs can all be toxic to dogs and cause sickness, an upset stomach or even death, and many people do not realise that popular bulbs can cause serious harm to our dogs.
The toxins in bulbs are more concentrated than in the final plant and flower, so it’s important to watch out if your dog is showing an interest in the bulbs you are planting out.
If your dog loves to dig, consider bulbs other than daffodil, crocus and tulip, and for any dog make sure to store bulbs out of harm’s way in the home.
If you think that your dog may have eaten a bulb, try and work out what kind of bulb, and get them to the vet as quickly as you can.
Symptoms also include inflammation and burn-like marks on your dog’s body.
If you have any concerns at all it is always the best thing to get your dog to a vet immediately.
