The PIF Export Scheme successfully passed its Trial Phase recently with pallets travelling across Europe and safely delivered to their destinations.

The Trial Phase follows months of due diligence by the PIF team who have been working hard to create a scheme which enables manufacturers and suppliers to export products to the EU containing animal protein in a cost effective and efficient way.
Jonathan Rees, Director of Pero Foods, who took part in the Trial Phase commented: “Since Brexit, exporting products to the EU that contain animal protein has been significantly more complicated so we very much welcome the introduction of the PIF Export Scheme.”
Nigel Baker, CEO of PIF, added: “We are delighted to have completed

the Trial Phase and look forward to facilitating weekly shipments in the near future. We would encourage any businesses interested in taking part in the scheme to register their interest as soon as possible.”
The next shipment is open to all pet businesses however future shipments will be specifically for PIF members. To join PIF today, visit PIF – Pet Industry Federation (petfederation.co.uk)
iPETNetworkhaslauncheda goldstandardqualification

Since the pandemic puppy boom, the return to the office has brought with it challenges for many staff members, not least a new pet which may be suffering from separation anxiety at home.
There are also a number of benefits to bringing a pet to the workplace, and studies have found that increased productivity and work satisfaction was a result of welcoming a furry friend.
A University of Lincoln study found that employees who often took their dog to work reported 22% higher satisfaction with working conditions.
It also discovered that employees who took their dog to work reported increased absorption in their work by a significant 33.4% and in their dedication to work by 16.5% – an overall increase in work engagement of 14.4%.
The new Ofqual regulated qualification provides policy templates and training, so that workplaces can not only be dog friendly, but safe for everyone too.
Sarah Mackay and Fern Gresty, directors of the iPET Network, said: “With more dogs than ever in the UK, and people now back at work, we saw a real need for this kind of qualification.
“This qualification gives workplaces everything that they need to introduce dogs in a way that really is the gold standard.”
Workplaces that take part in the course are given special insignia to display on the premises, and policy templates are provided in a number of key areas.
Sarah and Fern added: “We would encourage any workplace that already welcomes dogs to do the course, as there is probably something that workplace is missing.

A leading animal grooming school is now offering an even wider range of courses to those leaving the armed forces.
The Four Paws Groom School’s courses in cat grooming, dog walking and pet sitting have recently been approved by the Ministry of Defence.
Those leaving the Army, Navy or RAF and are considering retraining in the animal sector can now choose from five different qualifications when considering their next steps.
They can opt for cat grooming, dog walking and pet sitting qualifications in addition to dog grooming and canine first aid - all of which are Ofqualregulated.
Fern Gresty and Sarah Mackay, owners of Four Paws and awarding organisation iPET Network, said: “We’re thrilled to be able to offer an even bigger range of qualifications to those looking for a new career after serving in the armed forces.

“Those leaving the armed forces can be provided with up to £2,000 towards the cost of training for a new career.
“We understand that the prospect of starting a new job can be very daunting so the qualifications we offer provide all the training and skills required to have work with animals, which we both know is incredibly rewarding.
“Every one of our qualifications is specifically tailored to that particular sector and is delivered in settings across the country by our highly-experienced training providers.

“Those who have experience of the armed forces have a whole host of transferable skills and are a real asset to the animal sector. We’re looking forward to enrolling more of those capable and talented people on our courses in the coming months.”
Former Army dog handler Jessy Brown is choosing to retrain as a dog groomer after being medically discharged.
The 22 year-old from Northern Ireland is studying for the iPET Network Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming and Salon Management.
Jessy, who is taking the qualification at the Bone Idol Academy in Hove, said: “I

think I am ready for something else and wanted to explore more career options.
“I’ve always worked with animalsbefore I was in the army I used to work at animal shelters. I’ve always been around dogs. It’s a natural transition, and I won’t miss the canine company I’ve come to enjoy so much.
“It has been so hands on and it’s amazing. You are literally grooming dogs all day every day! You do have theory
lessons, but it has been brilliant.
“I think that the industry should be regulated, you need to have training to show that you can do the job, and for safety reasons.”

iPETNetworkhas announcedanew partnershipwith PetsatHome

iPET Network, an awarding organisation that creates qualifications in the animal care and veterinary science sector, has created a bespoke and exclusive dog grooming qualification - the iPET Network Level 3 Diploma in Professional Dog Grooming (Exclusive to Pets at Home) in partnership with Pets at Home.

The bespoke qualification, which is regulated by Ofqual, has been launched to help ensure The Groom Room teams in Pets at Home’s pet care centres across the country continue to provide the very best grooming and welfare for puppies and dogs.
Created especially for The Groom Room colleagues, and building on the in-depth training Pets at Home already offers, the enhanced programme and qualification gives teams additional skills to provide top-quality grooming services.
As part of the programme, there are 12 units that colleagues will need to learn and demonstrate their skills to complete this comprehensive qualification.
The announcement is part of an ongoing commitment from both Pets at Home and iPET Network to raise awareness of the importance of professional dog grooming, so that all pet owners can be sure their pet is getting the best and safest experience.
iPET Network, which was founded by education and pet professionals Sarah Mackay and Fern Gresty has long been at the forefront of championing pet care industries, and ensuring that as many people who work in them have top quality industry-recognised skills and qualifications.

Sarah and Fern said: “We always find
that owners are surprised to learn that formal qualifications, including first aid training, aren’t a legal requirement for dog groomers.
“That’s why it’s great to see the UK’s largest pet care specialist taking action to raise awareness and drive real change across the industry to deliver the highest standard of practice and care for pets.
“We are delighted to have partnered with Pets at Home and The Groom Room on this initiative, which will ensure that more groomers than ever before receive top quality qualification. A step which is fabulous for the whole industry.”
The Groom Room colleagues currently benefit from a thorough six-month internal training programme, a minimum of 1,000 hours of learning, and are continually assessed throughout their career.
The first 400 colleagues will be
enrolled into the programme in September, with hundreds more planned over the next two years across its 355 Groom Room salons.
Karl Atkinson, Head of Grooming at Pets at Home, said: “Grooming is an essential part of our pets’ health and welfare, and that’s why providing our colleagues with the very best training is so important to us.
“We’re proud to be leading the way and empowering our grooming teams with the best knowledge in the industry, ensuring we can continue to deliver the best possible care to every pet we meet.”
iPET Network has created a comprehensive guide to becoming a dog groomer, which can be viewed at www.ipetnetwork.co.uk/guides/a-guideto-becoming-a-dog-groomer

Mayhew
Bob the miracle cat survives a suspected highrise fall and now has a loving forever home.
When Bob, a five-month-old Domestic Shorthair cat was brought to Mayhew in June, there was no knowing whether the ginger moggie would survive the injuries he showed at the time. One of these included a split upper hard palate, an abnormal split in the roof of the mouth caused by trauma, commonly seen in cats who have fallen from excessive heights.

Thanks to Mayhew’s expert veterinary care, Bob soon made a full recovery and now, three months on from his injury has a loving forever home with his new owner, Emma, from London.
Emma explains: “Having read about the injuries he had sustained from what could have been a fall from a significant height, I wanted to understand as much as possible about his condition and recovery so I could help support his rehabilitation. Thankfully, he has gone from strength to strength and is a
healthy, happy and loving companion.”
Advicetopassontocat owners
Cats are very curious animals and can get themselves into all sorts of trouble. Chances are you will not know exactly what a cat has been up to, so any changes in behaviour are important to be taken seriously.
Some signs to look out for that a cat has got itself into trouble might include:
1. Any lameness, where your cat is limping or just does not seem to be walking quite right. This could be anything from bruising to a serious fracture.
2. Any bleeding from the nose, mouth or anywhere else on the body could be a sign of a traumatic event. If the bleeding is active, your cat will need to be taken immediately to the vet.
3. If your cat is not eating, hiding away or seems to be acting strangely this could

be a sign of underlying pain.
4. If your cat seems to have difficulty eating, this is a sign there could be trauma in the mouth or dental problems.
5. When stroking your cat, if they seem to be abnormally reactive, there could be an underlying injury.
Any subtle changes should be noted and monitored and taken to the vet if not improving over 24 hours. If your cat is limping, bleeding, or in pain, they need to be seen by the vet to ensure they are examined appropriately and treated for any underlying condition. Do not attempt to examine your cat yourself, you could create more harm by doing so. Until you visit the vet, keep them indoors and away from other animals.
Also please remember to neuter your cat, they can be neutered from four months old, and unneutered cats are at a much higher risk of falls and other traumatic injuries.
Advocate for

Challenging muzzle stigma

For decades owners of muzzled dog have experienced prejudice when out and about. However, amongst younger owners, the mood is shifting. The stereotypical status “aggressive dog” sporting a muzzle is a thing of the past. A new study Company of Animals on behalf of Baskerville (2022)* found that the number one reason to use a muzzle for dog owners is during the visit to groomers and vets (31% of the nation’s dog owners).
It is therefore hardly surprising that 61% of these muzzle purchasers cite “stressful situations” rather than “aggression or biting” as their reason for purchasing this training tool. With this insight, groomers can leverage their influencer status to normalise muzzle usage and pave the way for fighting the stigma around muzzles.
Fabric muzzles are cruel, outdated and extremely dangerous

Wearing a fabric muzzle (also called grooming muzzles) even briefly will interfere with one of the dog’s most sensitive and essential respiratory process: panting.
By design, fabric muzzles only allow the dog to breathe through the nose thus ruling out every kind of exercise, temperature fluctuations or stress levels for the dog lest their health and welfare be at risk. A normal body temperature for a dog is between 38.3°C and 39.2°C but an increase in any of the aforementioned factors can cause major distress and sadly, rapid death even within minutes of wearing a restrictive muzzle. Let’s not succumb to the temptation of these cheap but dangerous muzzles, which are not even bite proof.
Basket muzzles are the most ethical option

The Baskerville™ study* found that 62% of muzzle users cited “comfort” as a requirement for their purchase decision while 54% acknowledged the ability to pant happily as being crucial to their choice. Replacing fabric muzzles in your salon with basket muzzles is the safest choice for the wellness of the dog and your own safety.
Designed by experts for over 35 years, Baskerville humane muzzles guarantee high standards of safety both for dog and owner, while allowing the best comfort possible for the dog to pant, drink and take treats.

Elected as the Best dog muzzle**, Baskerville is recommended and used by behaviourists and vets around the world

Why choose

Here’swhattheyhadto say:
SIANSOMERS,OWNEROF ABBFABB
1. Every GroomFest event I have attended, I have always enjoyed the show. It is well organised and the stands are well spaced out. GroomFest is always an event I like to attend as a trader.
2. I always enjoy the busy atmosphere, meeting other traders (old and new), meeting my customers and sharing my knowledge with them regarding scissors.
3. It is a great event for groomers to come to my stand, and see and test all my scissor collections. Financially, it is my second-best show of the year.
4. I generally feel that this is a fantastic event. There is a range of extremely experienced groomers and dog grooming training teachers who should be included next year!

KELLYANDGEOFFMILLS, OWNERSOFBENTLEY’S DOGFOOD
1. We had a very positive experience at GroomFest 2022, very much worthwhile and successful. The two days worked very well for us. It’s always great being able to talk to industry people in a relaxed atmosphere at the event.
2. Our favourite part of GroomFest is seeing so many familiar faces and meeting regular customers of ours that come back to us every year. Prior to every GroomFest, we receive multiple e-mails asking if we will be attending so they can stock up on our products, which is always lovely to hear.
3. Groomfest gives us a great opportunity to promote our products to a specific industry that we have been involved in since our brand was formed. We can have great conversations with groomers discussing benefits.
4. The scheduling of the seminars works well, giving traders periodic breaks to catch a breath in between waves of busy shopping. The quality of the food was substantially better this year and having a coffee van outside was also very welcome!
ANDYMACTAGGART, UKSALESDIRECTORAT POWAIR

Business is good, very good. COVID changed everything and everyone had to start again, so we’re grateful to get
the shows back on. The show’s been growing like mad from our perspective. Every year it’s been better for us financially, as well as for meeting new people.
It’s not always about making a profit on the day, it’s about giving out samples and speaking to customers as well. We look at it from both sides, it’s not just “money money money”.
We can learn about new products and we also have the opportunity to educate new customers on certain things, especially with our brand. We can actually get in front of, and speak to, customers.

Next year, I would like to see more of the same. The show hours are good, we’ve got some customers and clients we always speak to who give great feedback.
Compared to a lot of other shows across Europe and the UK, it’s one of the simplest shows we do in terms of applications, payments and actually coming down and setting up for the day. I enjoy it, it’s one of the least stressful shows we do.
The seminars attract a lot of people. I think if it was just a trade fair, you would discourage people from coming again next year. The more different seminars and new people, whatever it may be, is a good thing.
LACEYSMITH,OWNEROF RIDDLESCREATIVEBOX
Today has shown just how big GroomFest is! A lot of people spent money with us today. I think being out there is one of the best parts of the show.
A lot of the people that we know are
repeat clients. There are a few that say it’s their first time.
Sometimes, the competing shows can be a bit daunting, where this is just shopping. Nobody’s feeling daunted by being in a ring, judging and things like that. This is more relaxed. Any dog lover can just come to the show. You don’t necessarily have to be a groomer.
From what I know, everyone knows what GroomFest is. I don’t think many people in our industry would say that they’ve never heard of it.
JAMIEROBERTS, OWNEROFMUTNEYS PROFESSIONALPETCARE

We’ve got a lot of repeat customers, a lot of new customers and a lot of students. At GroomFest, people can come and try out all the stuff in the catalogue. This makes it better for them as they can say “Oh, I need a new dryer, how much air force has it got?”, try it and go “Brilliant, I’ll have that.”
I think that the show is pretty much there. It works. The media is working well on it, as people are seeing it.
I’ve been doing this for 26 years. Most of the people are friendly here, but you’ve got to have a little healthy competition. It works well, and there’s a nice spread of exhibitors and stalls.

LYNNELAND,OWNEROF DOGLYNESS
It’s been very busy today! This is our first GroomFest, as we’re a very new company. This is better than Crufts. What I like about this is that everything is in the same hall together. This is everything you want in one.
We’ve really enjoyed it this year and we’d like a bigger stand next year. Not because we’ve got lots of products, but because we’d like more people to be able to get on to the stand. We want people to ask questions and understand the product.

This has been a dream show, it really has.
LOUISATANDY,OWNER OFLOUISA’SGROOMING SALONANDSIMPSON’S BRANDAMBASSADOR
It’s so good to be back! We’ve really missed it and I think for so many of us dog groomers, we use these events to network, socialise and speak to others in

our industry to swap ideas and educate ourselves.
The best thing about GroomFest is that it’s a unique event. This is purely shopping and education. You don’t get that with any other event within this industry.
I want to see GroomFest keep on growing, so keep on doing what you’re doing! You’ve got such a wide range of stalls here.
It’s being able to have the one to one chats with groomers, who can watch what I do. They can also try before they buy.
I think the industry is growing very fast. What we’ve got is so many different levels of people setting up businesses. It would be good that they are more encouraged to come to these kinds of events.

DAVIDWOODS,DIRECTOR OFSHAKEYOURTAIL
This is the first time I’ve done a two-day GroomFest. There’s a good mixture of groomers in terms of new and existing, and, for us, a software company, you’re getting people that are traditionally using a paper-based system. Trying to talk with them about moving to a digital platform, and then obviously using other systems.
The best thing that we can get from GroomFest is feedback. Meeting people, seeing different trade stands, and learning from my existing clients is such a plus. This is half of the reason why we come here, we actually get to talk with them.
Finding out the feedback and what works and doesn’t work, taking that and trying to improve our products which hopefully improves their business is amazing.

Today is about making people aware of us, putting a face to the name and not just that we’re tech people. I just hope that people feel more connected with us.
With people who are new to grooming, GroomFest is full of people who are out there with products. You can meet with old clients and meet new ones.

This year was advertised better and there’s a lot of people talking about it on social media. I think communication with trade stands was better in the last twelve months.

So far, it’s been very good today!

Pedigreemobilepet groominginsurance

If you have a mobile pet grooming business, apart from your skill and your passion for the job, the vehicle in which you do business is probably your biggest asset.
Whether you operate your dog or cat grooming business from an adapted van or a modified trailer or caravan, it will probably have had a major overhaul and expensive modifications to make it fit for purpose.

You may have gone to a specialist van conversion company or rolled up your sleeves and done the work yourself, either way the investment in customised fixtures and fittings will have been considerable.
Mobile grooming parlours often boast a generator, electric sockets, lighting, grooming tables, running water and a bath or shower unit to enable you to give the pets you cater for the attention they deserve and which their owners demand. The cost of these modifications will very quickly add up.
Once the outlay has been made and the conversion work done, you will need
to be confident that your insurance is also up to scratch and that your permanent fixtures will be covered.
Standard commercial van insurance may seem like a good deal for a mobile pet grooming business, but many policies won’t provide adequate cover for the modifications you have made.
Adrian Flux has a variety of specialist schemes perfect for mobile pet grooming salons of all descriptions. Their insurance plans offer peace of mind protection for your van and the conversions you have made to it.
The broker has almost 50 years’ experience and can offer mobile dog grooming van insurance to suit your precise needs, no matter how complex they are.

Adrian Flux insurance schemes offer many optional extras including:

• Cover for permanent specialist fixtures and fittings
• Cover for modifications
• Free legal cover
• Courtesy vehicle available on comprehensive policies
• Windscreen cover
• Discounts for no claims bonus
• Breakdown cover
For a mobile dog grooming salon, being on the road at all times is vital. If you break down or are involved in an accident that puts the van out of action it will have a detrimental impact on the business and, no doubt, it will quickly begin to hit you in the pocket.
Adrian Flux has a team of claim call handlers on duty around the clock to help keep you on the move.

Dryers

Curious about the different types of dryers and which one you should get for your grooming business? We spoke with an industry pro so that you don’t have to.

Dryingo
Dryers are one of the most vital pieces of equipment within the grooming industry. From the time it can shave off an appointment, to finishing a coat, we speak with Emma Gilloway, Senior Sales Executive at Christies Direct to find out all about dryers.
Being one of the most important pieces of equipment you’ll find in any groomer’s arsenal, dryers can be broken down into two categories. These consist of finishing and blasting. However, there are also combination dryers which can give you the best of both worlds!
Emma explains the dryer types: “A blaster is a dryer with a high air velocity, but little to no heat. They are designed to be safe to go right into a dog’s skin to blast out all the excess water and loose hair.
“A finishing dryer on the other hand is a dryer with lower air velocity but with heat. These would be used to fully dry and style the coat. Some finishing dryers also have ionic generators to help prevent static in the coat.
“A combination dryer has the best features of both dryer types. They would

have fully variable heat and air velocity, which allows you to adjust the dryer to suit your needs. They will be equipped with a finishing pipe and nozzle, along with a flexible hose and nozzles for blasting. These dryers are perfect for anyone starting in grooming or grooming on their own.”

Over the years, energy-efficient dryers have grown exponentially with their popularity, especially with the current climate of electric bills. That being said, many groomers are also gravitating towards dryers that are easy to maintain, such as ones that have an easy-toremove filter that can be machine washed.
“With an increase in new groomers and home groomers, combination dryers are also increasing in popularity due to their space-saving abilities,” Emma said, “They also save the cost of buying a blaster and finishing dryer separately.”
There are plenty of benefits to investing in a good dryer within your grooming salon. From a clientele and revenue standpoint, you can even spot some pros!
A great dryer won’t simply make a positive impact on the quality of the finish of a dog’s coat, it can also save you extra time and money for your business.
Emma explains: “A good dryer will speed up the average drying time, leaving room for a groomer to get more dogs groomed in a day. More dogs groomed will, of course, mean more income. A high-quality dryer also leaves a high-quality finish, this means more impressed and happy customers!”
There are an array of factors to consider when looking for a dryer for your business. With a wide selection across the board, it may be a daunting task. However, there are a few factors that can help you to whittle it down.
Providing right and left handed dog groomers with award winning dog grooming scissors at affordable prices with unrivelled customer service!

“When you are deciding on a dryer for your business you need to think about the following: What space do you have? How many groomers do you have in your salon? How many dogs do have daily/ weekly? What breeds do you groom? Do you have backup dryers?
“When it comes to choosing a dryer, it is important to remember that it is not only used for drying the hair, but also to de-shed or style a coat. For example, if you generally work with a lot of shedding breeds such as German Shepherds, Huskies, Samoyeds etc. you will need a powerful blaster for de-shedding the coat.

“If these types of breeds make up most of your clientele, you would be looking for a double motor blaster or combi dryer. If your clientele is made up of mostly long, fluffy, or woolly coated breeds such as Bichons, Shih Tzus, Poodles, Pomeranians etc you will need a combi dryer, or both a blaster and finishing dryer.” Emma said.

One of the biggest factors to consider, as a business owner, will always be your budget, too. If you can only afford a single dryer, then naturally you’re going to want to invest in the two-in-one combi
as you get the best of both worlds.
Then, when you expand, you’ll be able to take a look at what both a blaster and a finishing dryer can do for you. You can then keep the combi as a backup for a
rainy day!

Autumnalrisk

The nights are drawing in, and it’s time to start thinking about snuggly jumpers, pumpkinspiced things, Halloween and (dare I say it...) Christmas shopping!
Autumn can bring with it some hazards for our canine companions, and I am currently working hard to spread the word about some lesser known dangers.
Conkers contain a toxin which, if eaten by a dog can cause them to vomit, have diarrhoea or even collapse. So, it is worth keeping an eye out this horse-chestnut season for dogs coming into your salon who are showing signs of having eaten this hidden killer.

If you suspect that a dog you are caring for may have eaten something poisonous, contact your vet straight away. Groomers are often the first ones to spot health problems with their furry clients, so awareness is key this Autumn.
The second Autumn hazard that I would like to focus on is collars and dog
coats/jumpers.
It is completely normal to want your dog to be warm as the nights get colder, and many dogs love a warm coat or jumper.
It is also essential that when out for a walk, your dogs wear a collar and name tag, to comply with UK law.
However, my practice has sadly seen injuries and death after dogs became caught on door handles or radiator dials and choked while they were alone.
In some horrific cases, boisterous playtimes between dogs have also led to choking incidents and death, there is no reason for collars to be worn when the dog is not out for a walk.

For groomers, I also don’t advise leaving collars or harnesses on inside indoor crates unless monitored very closely.
These indoor collar injuries and tragedies can be avoided by simply taking off the collar. Many people think

it is a legal requirement, but that is only when your dog is out walking.
At home, so many things can happen while you are not looking, and that is when these horrible incidents happen.
I have seen cases where, during a play session, one of the dog’s mouths has become caught on the other’s collar creating a dangerous panic situation and causing devastating life-threatening injuries.
Dogs will be safer and more comfortable without their collar indoors, and you will be able to relax too. Always supervise your dog when they wear a coat or jumper too, for the same reasons.
Dog groomers have a unique platform to offer friendly advice to owners, so please do pass on information from this article to your clients.

Fireworks

Petsandfireworks

RSPCA Campaigns Manager Carrie Stones tells us all about how fireworks can have a negative impact on dogs, as well as how you, as dog groomers, can ensure you’re up to date with the latest knowledge.
HiCarrie.Whatshould doggroomersbecautious ofwhenitcomesto fireworks?
A recent survey* carried out by the RSPCA showed that among pet/animal owners, almost 2/3 (63%) report signs of distress in their animals during the firework season. So be aware that owners coming to you may be experiencing this with their pets.

It’s so important to know which resources to point them to, such as the RSPCA website or their vet and become familiar with top tips to pass on to help.
If fireworks are set off while you have dogs in your care, groomers should have procedures in place to keep them as calm as possible - this may be by asking owners to bring a favourite comforting toy, or by playing relaxing music on the radio.
Dogs may be more sensitive to noise in general during firework season so be

sensitive to this.
WithGuyFawkesNight quicklyapproaching, what shoulddoggroomersbe doingtoensurethey’re passingonthecorrect informationtoclients?
Make sure you are using a reputable source such as a charity website or advice from a vet.

It may be worth researching the rules in your area as some councils have now restricted fireworks in certain areas, following an ongoing RSPCA campaign.
Also, be aware the RSPCA has an impact reporting page which had 11,000 responses last year. Groomers can let owners know they can use this to report animal distress during fireworks.
The RSPCA also has downloadable posters you can display in your window to discourage people from letting off fireworks near where animals are - and it would be fantastic to see these displayed in the windows of dog grooming parlours.
The RSPCA is teaming up again with Classic FM on November 5 for a Pet Classics radio show to help calm animals on the night.

• Toileting inside when they wouldn’t normally
Whatcangroomers,and theirclients,dotocalma dogduringfireworks?

RSPCAtoptips
• Play music to obscure sounds of fireworks
• Provide your dog or cat with a safe haven - Create a doggy den in a quiet area of the house and make it a special safe place by placing tasty treats and favourite toys inside. Make sure your cats always have access to plenty of places around the house to hide.

• Pheromone diffusers - Speak to your vet about using a calming collar or diffuser which disperses calming pheromones which may help your dog or cat feel more secure.
• Introduce changes to your pet’s routine slowly - It’s sensible to keep your horse in a familiar environment, following their normal routine with their usual companions. If you’re planning to bring your horse or livestock into a stable or barn overnight during fireworks, start to introduce the change of routine now to get them used to being in. We recommend walking dogs during daylight during fireworks season so if this is different to your normal routine, begin to alter the time of your pet’s walk to get them gradually used to it.
• Provide extra bedding - Rabbits, guinea pigs and other small animals who live outside should have extra bedding to burrow into or you can cover their housing with a blanket for extra soundproofing. Begin to introduce this now.
• Bringing pets inside - If you’re planning to bring them indoors to better protect them then start to make this change ahead of fireworks night to get them used to the new sights, smells and

sounds inside.
• Speak to neighbours - If you want to plan for dates of local displays then check local press and websites and speak to your neighbours and local councils/ schools etc to find out dates ahead of time so you can plan now to help your pet. Ask organisers to site fireworks well away from your horse and aimed in the opposite direction.

• Soundproof your house - Simple steps like closing windows and curtains can help your house seem safer to your pet so begin doing this now if it’s different to normal to get your pet used to it.
• Start desensitising them to soundsTeach your pet to deal with the sounds by using training CDs. We recommend Sounds Scary which comes with guidance on how to use it. You can also muffle the sound of fireworks for dogs and other pets by using calming music like classical playlists - start to introduce this now. This is a long-term approach so may be worth starting now ahead of next year.
• Get help - If your pet has a severe fireworks fear then speak to your vet now to come up with a plan or to discuss whether there are any treatment options to help them. If necessary, your vet can
refer you to a professional clinical animal behaviourist.

Wherecandoggroomers turntolearnmoreabout dogs,healthandsafety andfireworks?
Behaviour experts, charities like the RSPCA and vets will all have advice on how to help people with specific needs. For more general tips, the RSPCA website has lots of advice. It’s also worth being familiar with your local authority on what the rules are - and if you think your Council should be doing more, take action by supporting the RSPCA’s campaign!

Harley
Nine-year-old rescue Staffie, Harley, spends hours hiding and trembling during fireworks season. His owner, Claire McParland, from Worthing in West Sussex, said: “My husband and I adopted Harley when he was just 15 months old. He’s always been a nervous little dog and is very noise sensitive but this worsened when my husband and then our other dog died. We’ve been working with my vet and behaviourists to help Harley but fireworks continue to reduce him to a nervous wreck. He shakes like a leaf. Last year was actually an improvement on how he’s reacted in previous years. It’s so upsetting to see him in such a state, even for one evening. But this isn’t just for one night, it goes on for days as people around us set off fireworks at different times on different days.”

FIREWORKS - CASE STUDIES Rose

Michelle Sidney, from West Sussex, adopted Rose the Rottweiler from RSPCA Millbrook animal centre in December 2020. She had spent three weeks at RSPCA Finsbury Park hospital, during which time she had been left terrified by the intentionally frightening loud firework noises across the local neighbourhood on November 5. Michelle plans to stay in with Rose and to use the TV as a noise distraction. Michelle said: “This will be her first firework season with me, so I’ll obviously need to ensure I plan for the weeks on either side too. She won’t be left alone and I’ll need to keep an ear out before she goes out for her nighttime wee!”

Stanley
Jenny Eden, from Worthing, West Sussex adopted RSPCA rescue dog Stanley, 8, when he was six months old. On November 5, Jenny and her husband Mike drive onto the South Downs with Stanley to help keep him away from the loud noises as he suffers extreme stress. Jenny said: “Stanley is super sensitive to noise, especially loud noises and fireworks. He tends to shake, pant and drool, and he can’t settle afterwards. It’s heartbreaking to see. It’s easiest to take him away from the situation and to try to get as far away from the noise as possible. What makes this more difficult is not knowing on which days fireworks are going to be let off.”

CountryDog Groomers

Martina Dorfer from Country Dog Groomers, based in the Cheshire countryside talks about animals, TikTok and local dog rescue centres.

After growing up on a farm in South Africa, in 2009, Martina arrived in the UK and qualified as a dog groomer. Shortly after, she completed a course at Reaseheath College in Canine Behaviour and Psychology and did another course in Canine Nutrition, forever changing the way she looked at animals.
Later that same year, Martina opened her own salon which she still runs today. “I specialise in 1-to-1 grooming, where the dogs are not restrained,” Martina comments, “I work with the dogs, and sometimes give the humans guidance to help work with their dogs if there are aspects of the grooming process the dogs are not well prepared for.”
Martina is a solo groomer and works one-to-one with her furry friends. She focuses on creating a tranquil environment and calming energy to make the dogs feel comfortable.
“On average a dog has upwards of 1015 years of grooming in their lifetime and I try to ensure that the dogs in my care enjoy their time with me. I personalise
every dog grooming session and it makes the working day so enjoyable. I can’t wait to start my working day, and spend it with dogs!” Martina said.
Martina’s husband built a photography platform within the grooming parlour, with customisable backdrops to fit the season. Photos are taken during, after, and throughout the groom. Sometimes even videos! “New clients or new puppy owners have said they loved being a fly on the wall,” Martina adds.

Martina’s nine-year-old daughter convinced her to start making TikTok videos of the grooms, giving clients an insight into how the parlour works.
“They love seeing their dogs get a massage in the bath, and seeing how well behaved they are on the grooming table,” Martina comments, “It has been such fun creating these videos which I share on all my social media platforms. After the groom, I add a finishing touch of a handmade dog bowtie, bandana
or flower for their collar. I love the little touches.”
Martina sees that the best way to grow your business is through word of mouth and telling as many people as you can that you’re on the lookout for new furry clients. When she first started out in ‘09, she would often groom dogs at her local dog rescue.
“We both benefited,” Martina said, “Also, don’t forget to introduce yourself to other dog-related businesses - dog walkers, vets, pet shops, hydrotherapy centres, trainers, and of course established dog groomers in and around your area.

“If there are independent pet shops in your area, go in with a box of chocolates and a bunch of your business cards and introduce yourself to the staff - dog owners often ask the staff for recommendations.”
In 2010, Martina completed a course in canine psychology and behaviour. Fascinated with learning how groomers can improve the dogs’ experience with them, she learnt that sometimes the dog is just not ready for an aspect of grooming.

“Working one-to-one helps with this as I am not in a busy salon, and have the luxury of spending a little more time on the individual dog, and getting to know them,” Martina said.

In January 2022, Martina qualified as a certified canine esthetician. The course is a canine salon dermatology course and is brilliant to do if you, as a dog groomer, want some foundational knowledge of the psychology and function of the canine skin, hair or coat and how to implement that knowledge into daily
grooming.
Martina said: “Learning about the stages of hair growth, skin and the relationship between the two has ignited a passion for learning more about what is in our shampoos and products we use. I think this is going to be a big focus in the coming years in our industry. Years ago, shampoo manufacturers didn’t put ingredients on dog shampoos; this is all changing for the better.
“Finally, I would like to say don’t compare yourselves with others. Take your own pace and charge your worth! Oh, and always answer the door or the phone with a smile! Your clients can hear your smile over the phone, and having
a

a friendly smiley face makes them feel more comfortable when handing over their (most) loved family member.
“If the dog on the table is struggling and you are getting frustrated, stop! Give the dog a break, maybe have a cup of tea and biscuit, listen to a podcast and take ten minutes to recharge. Burnout is real in our profession and we need to look after ourselves, so the dogs in our care can have a safe, calm and happy groom.”
Martina’s story is a passionate, educated and dedicated one. We’ll be following her career here at TGM for years to come! You can too if you follow @countrydoggroomers on Instagram.
FosteringPeaches
For Feline Focus this month we hear from iPET Network tutor, and The Kat Lady groomer Katie Gwilt, who shares her own experiences of working with rescue cats in her local community.

At the iPET Network, we pride ourselves on putting animals at the forefront of everything we do. All of the people that we work with share these passions and values. By Sarah Mackay and Fern Gresty - Co-founders of The iPET Network.

Katie says: “As someone who is passionate about cat welfare, it’s really important to me to be able to work with my local cat rescue centre. I do bits of grooming work for them as well as foster cats on their behalf.

Cats don’t all adapt well to a rescue centre, so having the option of foster carers in the community is a great way for these cats to wait to be adopted into their forever homes.
I was contacted by Garston Animal Rescue to go and look at a cat called Peaches.
She had been surrendered by her former owners who had been struggling with her long coat, among other issues.

When I first met her, she had not long been at the rescue centre and had a lot of matting around her back legs and thigh in particular, as well as her ruff around her neck.
I got to grooming her straight away and, as the mats were tight and close to the skin, I ended up clipping them out but saving as much fur as possible.
I felt a real connection with Peaches and it so happened that she needed a foster home as she wasn’t adapting well to being around a lot of other cats. I hadn’t fostered before, but immediately said I would love to have her and had a spare room where she could have her own space. The rescue agreed and she came to live with me.
While she was with me, I combed her daily and got to keep her coat knot-free and watch the shaved patches of fur start to grow back in. I also clipped her claws and kept her sanitary area clean. She has a big fluffy tail and is prone to getting all kinds stuck in it!

I took regular pictures of her and passed them on to the rescue centre along with updates about her behaviour and how she was getting on.
These pictures were shared on their social media and helped to find her a loving new forever home. The couple who adopted her fell in love with her photos immediately, and her backstory, before they even met her.
They took her home shortly after that first meeting and she is now settled in and has made herself queen of the
house! They keep in touch with me and I regularly see her for claw clips, sanitary trims and the odd knot removal.
Working with rescue cats like Peaches really helps them get a second chance at life and to find a loving home. I have since worked with quite a few cats at the rescue centre and have continued to see them after they have been adopted for regular maintenance grooms.
Being able to give back to the greater cat community is a fabulous feeling and I do encourage any groomers to reach out to local rescue centres. I also have

started taking iPET Network students along to practice their claw clipping and handling techniques so the cats get a free check-over to help them look their best for potential adopters.
It’s a win-win for the cats, the rescue centre, my students and my heart.

Whatcanyoutellmeabout yourgroomingcareer?
I never thought I would end up as a groomer but my friend introduced me to the craft and offered me a job as a grooming assistant back in 2012. That was when I discovered my passion for working with animals, and it kept getting better day by day.
Whatcanyoutellmeabout groominginCyprus?
Grooming in Cyprus is fairly an underdeveloped industry in my personal opinion, compared to the rest of Europe in terms of expertise and professionalism. Recently there have been a lot of developments taking place in the form of seminars, workshops and education around grooming and

the industry here in Cyprus looks very promising considering that there is a significantly growing demand for owning pets.

Whatkeydierenceshave younoticedbetween groomersinCyprusand groomersintheUK?

I follow many groomers from the UK on social media and I can only say that groomers in the UK appear to possess more passion and commitment to the industry compared to Cyprus where grooming was, until recently, considered a low-key profession.
Luckily, the perception is slowly changing and more people are discovering its great potential, especially for those who love animals!

Whataresomekey thingsthatyouthinkUK groomerscanlearnfrom groomersinCyprus?

Generally, I always say that every groomer needs to practice high levels of patience; both on the learning curve, as grooming has endless capabilities, and on the level of dealing with animals. If you cannot be patient, grooming may not work well for you in the long term.
Also, as an important note; never compromise on the quality of the products and the hygiene levels. Sadly, I have seen many use cheap products to increase their profit margin, resulting in skin defects and hair loss.

Dogs are highly compassionate creatures and my advice for every groomer is to take time to develop a relationship with the dog before starting the grooming session, especially on the first few visits. This will help a lot with dogs being cooperative during their grooming and it makes the work more pleasurable.
It may take some time off the schedule but the reward pays off when you see dogs enjoying their visit. Lastly, I strongly support a cage-free facility wherever possible, as it has a lot to do with dogs’ psyche and this is what I take pride in being able to achieve at my own grooming salon.

With over three decades of canine and equine grooming knowledge that spans skin and coat care, to grooming equipment development for both dogs and horses, Paula came up with the concept of the “Clipit” brand in 2015, after leaving her position as Commercial Director for Groomers Online where she was a founding director.
Today sees Paula strengthen the company with the appointment of Helen Coutts as Business Development Manager to help further develop the brand and improve Clipit products for the good of grooming.
Helen brings a wealth of businessto-consumer and business-to-business expertise and experience in the areas of marketing, brand management, business development, public relations, and product innovation, in both the animal grooming industry as well as the barbering industry.
Helen has particular equine knowledge, as she previously worked as Retail Manager for Robinsons Equestrian at their megastore in Basingstoke. Plus, she also has her own horse, Dom, who is a big softie standing at 19.2HH. Helen often competes Dom at dressage.
In 2013, Helen went for an interview with Paula at Groomers for the role of Commercial Manager. Helen got the role and whilst there, she was head of Styling Products UK for the barbering industry as well as responsible for the dog grooming student programme.

to keep developing game-changing products to support the industry with further education and cost-saving areas to help safeguard the industry in these difficult times.
Commenting on her appointment, Helen said: “I am so happy to take up this role within Clipit Grooming alongside Paula. Clipit offers so many possibilities that I know Paula and I can deliver. A team that I hope will inspire and excite everyone that we come in contact with. I will be utilising the skills I have developed over the years, working
with horses and pets.
Paula added: “I am excited and thrilled to be welcoming Helen on board as our new Business Development Manager. Her appointment feels like the old team is back! The development of the Clipit brand is really exciting and I have great respect for Helen and her knowledge of everything Clipit stands for. I truly believe we are a power to be reckoned with!”
Helen will be developing and helping to implement the business strategy, growing the brand and expanse of products to take to new markets.

Going Mobile…
The Portable Palace
Created from our Revolutionary insulated panel, the Palace provides groomers with unrivalled benefits never seen before in the industry! This amazing new concept was born due to our lining's incredible lifespan - they often out live the vans they were placed in - so we created a demountable pod where your business can be moved on to the next chassis easily when needed - or if you no longer wish to be mobile, you can demount the pod and work from your garden!
•
As the chassis ages, the Palace can be removed and placed onto a brand new chassis - resulting in a much cheaper cost than having to buy a whole new van and conversion with next to no downtime
• If the chassis is involved in an accident or breaks down you can simply remove the body, place it on the ground and work from your driveway whilst you wait for it to be repaired.
• The lining will not out live the vehicle like so often seen with used van conversions. You then have to sell the van & conversion and then buy a new van and conversion and wait whilst it is converted. Whereas with the Palace, you can keep the pod forever and change the chassis as you need to.
• Once you choose to retire from mobile grooming you can remove the Palace, sell the chassis and work from the Palace in your garden instead of having to buy a parlour or convert a room in your house.

• When you choose to move home, you can take the pod with you and this portability combined with the size means they will not normally require planning permission in your garden.
• You never need to buy a Brand new chassis that can depreciate - simply buy used a chassis and then swap them out as they get too old.
• Smaller than its LWB Van equivalent but provides a more workable space inside that is highly customisable as there are no van strutts or vehicle constraints
• Can be driven on a normal car driving license
Say goodbye to having to buy a whole new van and conversion every few years - simply move your Palace from one chassis to another with zero down time and when the time comes and you no longer want to be mobile, simply
