With the popularity of grooming styles such as Asian Fusion with its adorable teddy bear and spiral cuts, there is certainly a demand for technical skills in the industry but it is important that this is done with safety and animal welfare in mind.Sarah Mackay and Fern Gresty, codirectors of the iPET Network, said: “This course is a great way to continue your journey in the industry, and skills like this elevate the industry as a whole.
The Ofqual regulated iPET Network course in Creative Grooming gives learners the welfare-led skills and confidence that they need to express their creativity at work.
To find out more about the course go to Towww.ipetnetwork.co.ukfindoutmoreaboutHelen and the Bone Idol Academy go to www.boneidol. co.uk
“When courses like this are launched it is great because it shows the public just how committed the industry is to excellence, safety and welfare.”
Billed as a way to diversify for existing qualified dog groomers, the course is for professionals who want to demonstrate their design and flair at the highest level. With a firm focus on animal welfare, the course enables groomers to grow their business offer, but in a way which is both ethical and animal driven. The course comes at a good time.

iPET Network have a new add-on qualification for creative grooming to expand business offerings.
NEWS
iPETNetwork’snew qualification
“This course is a way to get those nextlevel technical skills, whether it is for a competition, or for clients in your salon.”
“With all dog grooming, welfare is always a top priority, and existing qualified dog groomers know that.
Dog groomers who want to specialise in show-stopping pooch perfect styles can now branch out by taking a new add-on qualification.
iPET Network teacher Helen Kirby, who runs the Bone Idol Academy in Hove, East Sussex, travelled to Malaysia in early 2020, to master the tricky Asian Fusion grooming style which encompasses some similar techniques to creative grooming.Helensaid: “There are so many career options within dog grooming, and for those looking to specialise in technical grooms this course sounds wonderful. “While I will never regret my Malaysia experience, I do wish that I had the benefit of this course at the time too.
Up until now, the only way to learn some of the most technical grooming styles was to travel further afield.

With GroomFest just around the corner, we wanted to talk with some of the fantastic people who helped make it possible for 2022! Let’s dive in to some of the things that we’re excited for at this year’s show! totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk
@totalgroomingmagazineuk @TotalGrooming14
GroomFest is a shopping and education event. We have some excellent seminars throughout both days, as well as grooming demonstrations hosted by some of our trade stands and their ambassadors.Wehaveover 55 trade stands that will sell everything a groomer needs to run a successful business, from clippers and scissors to dryers and insurance. Our seminars will talk about everything from dealing with problem customers to everything poodles! For 2022, we have now decided to make the event a two-day show. So, that means double the seminars, double the demos and double the shopping! But, this also means double the work, double the planning and double the stress but I know it’s going to be a great show.
The event will be held on the 10th and 11th September at the Kennel Club Building, Stoneleigh Park, Stoneleigh, Kenilworth, CV8 2LG. See you there!
ConnorJenkins,Editor-InChief
For me, I love to see my stands and seeing the visitors, some I haven’t seen for over a year. Seeing the people coming in and enjoying their day, the seminars being full and stands being busy makes it all worth it. This event is made by our wonderful trade stands and visitors that come to the event. Without them, the event would not be the success it is today, so I really want to say a big thank you to everyone that comes along and enjoys the show. We are looking at bigger better things for 2023 so watch this space.
We’ve got a huge array of fantastic guests who are so excited to meet you all, it’s going to be an absolute blast!
GROOMFEST GroomFest
What can I say? I am so excited for this year’s GroomFest! It’s going to be a fantastic show and I hope that you all enjoy it as much as we’ve enjoyed planning it.

Qualifications are popular at the moment with numbers increasing all the time, so speaking with Groomers about the huge benefits and exposure they get as members of the spotlight is going to be 2.fabulous.GroomFest has a great, relaxed atmosphere, no-one seems to be in too much of a hurry. I am looking forward to delivering my seminar and getting engaged with the groomers via education.
We asked a number of our GroomFest speakers and traders the following questions on their thoughts and feelings about GroomFest:
1. What are you looking forward to this year?
KevinSimpson–Simpsons
3. Having abstained from last year’s event, we’re obviously delighted to be coming back as the events major sponsor. The new two-day show will be very interesting to see and we hope the event will attract record numbers of visitors.
1. I’m really pleased that, for the first time, this year’s GroomFest is two days.
2. What are your feelings about GroomFest as a whole?
3. There have always been some new products and companies, so I’m looking forward to seeing new products that might make grooming better, more profitable, etc. Helping groomers in their business means a lot to me, so feedback on how people have found my seminars is definitely something I would like to repeat this year.

SallyHart 1. GroomFest has always been an event with a great atmosphere, and I expect this year will be the same. The chance to meet up with familiar faces and also meet some new ones is undeniably great. I am most looking forward to the seminars and, as one of the speakers, I am looking forward to mine. Potentially helping people advance their business and make their working life better is one of the greatest feelings.
GroomFest should do this again as it was really popular and is a wonderful opportunity for more groomers to take advantage of the discount coupon off my Reiki training, especially for groomers, which I’ll be announcing during my seminar.
1. I have spent a lot of this year working at home, so it will be great to get out and meet pet groomers who I have been working with, or those who are in my Facebook group, Dog Grooming Business Help & Support.
2. The opportunity to have so many grooming suppliers and companies relevant to the industry, all under one roof for a weekend, is brilliant.
2. It’s a great event which is wellattended by the industry and the groomers. I have recommended lots of people come to the event, either as a trader or to have a look round.
3. Last year, it was broadcast live into the Facebook group. This was great as it meant those who couldn’t attend the event in person didn’t lose out and were able to see the speakers.
BillBetts–PetPassionto Profit
2. GroomFest always has a great vibe and I’m delighted to be there again this year, talking about how the healing benefits of Reiki can help them not only to calm the more anxious dogs they groom, but also to help them too, with easing their own aches and pains, as well as providing an additional income
It’s not often groomers can find so many grooming related products and suppliers in one place.
1. Having missed the last couple of years, we’re excited to be back at GroomFest. We are looking forward to meeting customers and promoting our range of award-winning, exclusive brands and 2.products.Asalong-established manufacturer and supplier, GroomFest addresses an important need within our industry. GroomFest is groomer-centric, bringing together the best grooming products and innovations from suppliers big and small. Being free to attend, it’s affordable to all, with the added bonus of educational seminars from leading pet professionals. It’s the perfect day out for anyone with an interest in animal care and grooming.
3. Is there anything that happened last year, or that you want to happen this year?
3.source.I’mhonoured to be delivering a seminar again. Last year, it was livestreamed which was a great way to reach those groomers unable to attend.
1. An event like GroomFest is a great opportunity to talk to groomers and be seen. Nothing is better than being face to face and allowing people to see and touch new products and ideas.
GroomFest is definitely an event that we need, for the benefit of both groomers and the suppliers.

Clippers19 & Trimmers @TotalGrooming @totalgroomingmagazineuk totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk

Using good quality clippers and trimmers in the industry is a crucial part of the success and efficiency of any salon. They need to be reliable, durable and give you the ability to get through all sorts of coat types.
Nicole Kallish, Andis Global Education Manager for its animal division, explains the importance of using good quality clippers and trimmers within the pet grooming industry: “A clipper and trimmer are investments in your career and without well-performing tools, a groomer lacks the ability do quality work on their clients.”
There is every opportunity that groomers today may be missing a trick when it comes to utilising every aspect of their clippers and trimmers within their barbershop.Nicolesees that using a clipper or trimmer to their full potential is sometimes overlooked. If you have multiple speeds for instance, use each speed level as intended. For doing more detailed delicate clipping, use lower speeds.
totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk @totalgroomingmagazineuk @TotalGrooming20
Let’s be honest, one of the most vital parts of any successful grooming business, as we all know, are the clippers and trimmers that keep the cuts going! We spoke with some industry pros to find out more.
Andis® Company is a fourthgeneration, family-led business and a market leader in barbering, styling and animal grooming founded in 1922. Its industry-leading clippers, trimmers and styling accessories are used by both professionals and DIYers across the globe. Andis believes that creativity makes the world a better place and takes pride in developing tools and educational resources that help everyone create their way.
“Efficiency is key for any grooming business, time is money,” Nicole continues, “The more clients we see each day brings in more revenue. If you have downtime with clippers, there will be more time taken to complete each groom.”
CLIPPERS & TRIMMERS
Nicole says: “One example is clipping a poodle foot. Often times this task takes us a bit longer, and using a high speed on the clipper will heat the blades up quicker, but using the slower speed will let a groomer take the time they need, and blade will not heat up quickly. Save using the high speeds for large areas of the animal that you can get through quickly such as the body or legs.”
From a clientele and revenue standpoint, investing in a good set of clippers can also be incredibly beneficial.
Lookingsharp

Quattro abreathof fresh hair @clipit-grooming.com New

Overall, Paul wants to share that he’s noticed a trend with groomers that he has noticed in recent years. Paul sees that people complain about their blades being returned from a sharpener not functioning properly. Any good sharpener knows that they should always test out the blades before returning them to a customer.
“I do not know of any sharpener who does not test blades before returning them,” Paul adds, “These tests will be carried out using the sharpeners clipper on either fake fur and/or a test string and without a clip-on comb. Any blades which fail this test will be re-sharpened. This, as a test, however isn’t the best as the clipper itself and the comb can influence performance as well as fake fur not being the same as dog fur.”
Visit www.andis.com to take a look at their extensive range and to see what could be your next long-lasting pair of clippers!Visitwww.barras-blades.com for more information.
If a blade returns to you and fails to work at the rate you’d expect, then we encourage that you reach out to the sharpener who gave you the service to find the root of the problem.
Overall, the take way from this is that no matter the aspect, the job, the type of groom or even the breed of dog, clippers will always remain an integral part of any grooming business.
CLIPPERS & totalgroomingmagazine.co.ukTRIMMERS @totalgroomingmagazineuk @TotalGrooming22
When it comes to upping your clipper game, Nicole has some top tips that can really inspire you. Nicole suggests that all groomers take a strong taking to improve their education. This includes, but is not limited to, learning from industry experts, finding out what tools they prefer to use, tips and tricks on getting that perfect finish or even simply how to manage their time wisely. “These days, cordless clippers are tops,” Nicole continues, “With the Andis Pulse ZR II, with no cord to get tied up around a grooming table or tripped over, it is much easier to get through the groom not being tied down to a plug. I always recommend having a spare battery charged and ready to go, so you will be able to clip continuously without having to wait for a battery to charge. It is well worth the investment to keep our day“Ifgoing.youare not using a 5:1 adjustable blade clipper such as the Andis Vida, what are you waiting for!? Using this type of clipper for sanitary trims, paw pads and eye corners is a game changer. Small, light and easy to get into small areas.”According to Nicole, at the end of the day groomers need to practice more self-care. If a groomer has been in the industry for any amount of time, they know that the job can have a seriously demanding impact on the human body. With the use of fantastic tools, ergonomically designed for groomers, you’ll be sure to stay in the game for a much longer period of time. “Grooming is such a rewarding career, and taking a little more time to keep ourselves healthy will let us enjoy it for years to come.” Nicole finishes. With clippers being at the very foundation of every grooming business, you’ll also want to ensure that you’re looking after them as much as you possibly can. This is where Paul from Barras Blades jumps in to action. Barras Blades is a sharpening company with innovation and engineering at its core. With a background in engineering, Paul provides a unique view on groomers’ equipment: “If your clippers fail then you are turning away customers and cancelling their appointments. This is never good for your reputation or your income.“However, the humble clipper is the most common reason I have a groomer on the phone in a corner and needing my help. You can build systems and skills to reduce the chance of failure.” Swiftly leading on, Paul brings to the table his thoughts on why groomers should be putting in extra effort to ensure that they have the absolute best tools for their businesses. As a sharpener, Paul does notice patterns when it comes to clippers failing after some time. This has a direct correlation with selecting the right clippers and blades for the job. This is where we recommend investing in brands such as Andis!

With Opal, Heiniger AG sets new standards. The new clipper is extremely quiet. It is also impressively powerful and equipped with two speed levels. With 3100 double strokes per minute in fast mode (and 2600 in slow mode), this clipper works smoothly and quickly even through dirty and thick fur and hair. The latest lithium-ion battery technology ensures cordless clipping up to 240 minutes. It takes just one hour for a full battery recharge. Thanks to the built-in battery level indicator, it is always possible to check the remaining battery time. Visit heiniger.com RRP: £332.88
Do you find your clipper is heavy and cumbersome, leaves lines in the coat, battery does not always function correctly? Help is here with the Clipit Quattro Cordless Clipper, that only weighs in at 254 grams and because of its neat size can be mistaken for a trimmer and not a clipper. The easy to hold, slim hand piece reduces hand and wrist fatigue and makes it easier to manoeuvre in hard-to-reach spaces and delicate areas. Delivering 8,000 strokes per minute, it is the fastest machine in the marketplace, but its shape and weight make it easy to manoeuvre in difficult to reach places and on small animals. The cool running titanium blades are unique to the clipper, but because of their nano technology they are corrosion resistant, strength to density ratio, low noise, and 75% cooler than steel blades. Some dogs love to put things in their mouths, and sand can be no exception.
Hazards When allowing a dog that loves swimming to take a dip, always make sure that there are not any hazards that they could injure themselves on. These could include pieces of rubbish, or driftwood.
Fastmovingwater When walking past any fast moving water keep your dog on a lead. And never leave your canine companion unattended at any time, even when you trust them to be off lead in safe areas.
If you are visiting a sandy beach or water source take care that your dog doesn’t eat the sand, it can cause sand impaction in the intestines and a painful trip to the vets.

It really wasn’t that difficult to arrange a really worthwhile event, which helped to spread the word about the brilliant work that everyone is doing to serve the growing number of pets. Everyone went away with the benefits of a canine first aidGivensession!the warm weather that we have had recently, here are some tips for water safety.
Vaccinations
Watertoavoid Avoid allowing your dog to swim in canals, as they may contain stagnant water or poisonous blue-green algae. Reservoirs are also dangerous, as while they may look calm, the surface of the water may hide strong undercurrents.

It’s of the utmost importance to realise that the impression that you leave your clients with can seriously make or break your business. As a human being, you’d hate for a client to barge on in, start making demands and put you in a negative headspace. So, surely, taking the clients’ feelings into consideration will only support a healthy environment, right? Showing that you genuinely care about your clients, instead of simply treating them like another way to make your revenue, will lead them to want to come and see you more frequently. They will feel valued as people and, at the end of the day, isn’t that what we all really want?
Gloria Hardaway, also known as Gloria The Groomer to her vast array of loyal followers, demonstrates a passion for ensuring that clients are well taken care of.“When clients are treated fairly they’re more confident in supporting businesses of any kind. Here at Pet Care Plus, customers are valued and treated equally. We can assure each customer that their pets will be cared for and treated humanely as our number one priority.” Gloria said. There are so many things that you can do to let your clients know that you care about them. Offering refreshments whilst they’re waiting, having a positive dialogue and catching up with them, and more… One of the things that can be done is asking your clients for feedback. This can have a direct link to the
Something which should be at the very forefront of your minds when running a business is that your clients are more than just walking pound signs. These are people who chose you for a reason, and deserve nothing but the best quality service - here’s why…

Gloria tells us that when a client’s issues are looked into, they will feel reassured and comfortable within the salon. “Addressing any concerns that clients may have will ensure them that they are cared for in the grooming salon, “Gloria adds, “Engaging with them in conversation about their pets and managing their expectations are a plus. For example, if a pet comes in for grooming services and had surgery, it is my due diligence to make sure that the pet is safe and comfortable during the groomingDemonstrateprocess.”theimportance of caring for your client by showing a genuine interest and listening to what they have to talk with you about. This can lead to understanding their pets’ specific needs, which can ultimately improve the service and will hopefully lead to more returning clientele. “Other ways to show clients that they are cared for are by listening and understanding what it is that they are asking for in regards to their pets’ needs” Gloria continues. So, it’s all well and good introducing the thought to your ethos, but what can you actually do to ensure that your clients are happy and feel as though they have been treated like more than “just a customer”?Gloriagoes into detail about a certain day of the month where they celebrate customers in style, in a way that best represents that the clients are valued. “To ensure that my clients are happy and treated fairly,” Gloria says, “Pet Care Plus offers Customer Appreciation Day once a month. Clients can get 50% off spa baths and nail trimming.” To provide the best for all types of clientele, Gloria also provides a sliding scale for clients that are on a fixed income. Not only will your clients appreciate you a lot more, and you’ll go home at the end of the day knowing that you’ve spread a little extra happiness, but there is also the added bonus of being able to turn a positive spin on your business model.AtPet Care Plus, they pride themselves on an outstanding sense of superior customer satisfaction. Businesses in general, not just grooming salons, that provide an extra service have noted that top-tier service really does go a long way.

Gloria’s advice to you all is to invest some time in education, looking into ways that you can really give your clients that extra morale boost in the industry: “Educate yourselves if you’re interested in pursuing a career in the grooming industry. Also, getting a mentor can help with improving your hands-on skills, grooming education, and networking. When you are professional and providing excellent customer service, your business will go far.” The takeaway here is that it really does pay off to be a good person. Investing time to get to know your clients, looking into techniques to bond with your clients, and finding ways to really demonstrate your passion in all aspects of your grooming business will boost revenue your businesses’ popularity tenfold.
“This is what increases footfall and revenue for a grooming business,” says Gloria. “Satisfied clients will brag about such good quality and services to their friends, family, co-workers, and neighbours. Word of mouth can determine footfall and revenue for your business.”Thegeneral consensus is to always treat others how you would want to be treated to build that genuine relationship to improve the way that your clients perceive you. You should always be looking to educate yourselves further, constantly trying to hit the mark with the next big idea that can really “wow” a client in regards to their satisfaction.

Pampered Pups Dog Grooming was created all because of the love of a dog. Leona’s rescue pup, Mr Soda, was one of those ‘once in a lifetime’ dogs. He was the first dog Leona ever owned that required professional grooming. After a few grooming appointments, Leona didn’t like the idea of dropping him off and leaving him in a strange and noisy environment, with other dogs waiting in crates to be groomed and collected hours later in the day. So, Leona decided to look into it as a career herself!“Iwas already working in the rescue where I adopted Soda, so I had a good knowledge of handling different breeds and dogs with difficult temperaments. We sadly lost Soda last year, a few weeks before his 11th birthday. We miss him every day, but he lives on within my business - he was the original Pampered Pup and, because of him, I have a job that I truly love!” Leona said. Leona did a two-year animal care course, where dog grooming was one of the modules, before completing a six-week intensive grooming course. “I decided early on that I wanted to work for myself,” Leona adds, “my unique selling point being that I offer a complete 1-1 grooming service with an ethos of one dog having all my attention for all of the time they are with me, to deliver that full Pampered Pup experience.”

Leona McGeough operates Pampered Pups Dog Grooming, a salon located in the beautiful Castleblayney countryside in Drumacon, Monaghan, Ireland.
Leona has recently upgraded to a new salon and will be celebrating ten years in business next year. “I am so excited to see what the next decade has in store for Pampered Pups! I couldn’t have gotten this far without my husband, my family and all of my loyal clients so, for that, I am so grateful.” Leona continues.
Leona claims that the key to growing on social media is simple. Post relevant content to your business, always be authentic and true to yourself – people can spot a fake person a mile away! Leona’s advice to a new groomer starting out, is to have a USP – make yourself different from other groomers in your area, have set working hours in place and don’t offer discounts. “For any groomer, I would say treat your business like you want to succeed from day one,” Leona adds, “Put the time and hard work in and don’t cut corners – create a brand around your business, always use good quality grooming products and take your time. We use sharp tools and dogs can be unpredictable. Therefore, slow and steady is better than an accident rushing to get finished before the next client arrives.“Oh, and always have an emergency chocolate stash handy for the days where you drop your favourite scissors or the dog poops on the table! Make friends with other groomers and go to seminars and training days.”
“We all occasionally get an aggressive dog that we have to send home ungroomed for their safety and our own, or we get ghosted by a no-show... There is a saying in the veterinary profession, “cats are not small dogs”. Of course, there are similarities in some treatments and medicine, but this is where the connection ends. The same should apply to grooming. We find the body language of dogs relatively easy to understand. They are generally sociable and enjoy the company of humans - no matter who theyOnare.the other hand, cats have evolved as mainly solitary animals and only tend to form social bonds with humans, who are their caregivers. They also express their emotions very differently, with subtle movements that can be difficult for humans to recognise. An apparent lack of communication cues can make it challenging for us to understand their emotional state. But, we must do so. Understanding these differences and, therefore, how to handle each species, is just the beginning. There is also a huge contrast in the strength of the skeletal system and skin, the senses are different (cats are more sensitive of smell), and coat types vary greatly. Therefore we must thoroughly understand the products and equipment we work with and our environment.
Canyoupleasetellour readersalittleabout yourself? I strongly advocate fear-free animal handling by providing advice and training on this subject worldwide. This year I was honoured (and humbled) to be awarded the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons International Award for my work in humane animal handling and shelter medicine.
CAT Felinefriends Miranda Luck, a cat-loving, qualified veterinary nurse and animal welfare consultant with over 30 years of experience in the sector tells us all about why cat grooming should be a priority within your grooming salon. totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk @totalgroomingmagazineuk @TotalGrooming40
Many cat owners struggle with grooming their cats, and I’ve had numerous cases where cats have required a full anaesthetic to be fully shaved free of their matted coats. Unfortunately, as with dogs, this process is not purely aesthetic and can reveal serious skin problems. Undergrooming (and overgrooming) can indicate medical or behavioural issues, and owners can often miss this.
Prevention is clearly better than cure in these cases, and offering cat owners a grooming service may significantly improve their cat’s welfare. The key,

however, is to remember the earlier saying, “cats are not small dogs”. Specialist training is essential, and if you cannot provide the gold standard of a home visit, then careful consideration must be given to your facilities. Cat welfare in veterinary practices has come a long way in recent years, with many signing up to International Cat Care’s Cat-Friendly Clinics. Cat owners clearly want and appreciate this scheme. Although ICC has nothing similar for Salons, groomers can easily apply many of the principles such as separate and quiet holding areas, use of calming pheromones and implementation of fearfree policies.
I’ve witnessed all sorts of cat restraining techniques with both positive and disastrous results.
I’ve witnessed all sorts of cat restraining techniques with both positive and disastrous results. Sadly, when it goes wrong, it goes terribly wrong, and research shows that over 30% of those bitten by a cat will require hospitalisation with an average stay of three days. First, I would recommend completing the ICC foundation courses in behaviour and health. I’d then suggest investing in a specific cat grooming course by a recognised educational body such as iPet Network. Once qualified, I would encourage engagement with your local vets. It is not always practical for vets to carry out grooming or clipping due to the slow and quiet pace required, and they may be pleased to refer clients to you. That’s business straight off the bat!
I would recommend only those with a genuine interest in cats consider grooming them. As mentioned, they are not small dogs! I think the only way to succeed in this field in a welfare-friendly way is to understand feline behaviour.

Do consider having a cat only day in the salon.Donot groom cats with dogs in the salon, and it is always best to groom one cat at a time or have cats from one family in at a time. Cats are less social than dogs and don’t often react well to new cats around them, especially in an already new environment. Cats are well known for not dealing with changes in their environment well, so the less new things you can add in at any one time the better. Be aware that after grooming, the cat may not be recognised by any other family members, so you may need a separate area to house the cat postgrooming if you have multiple cats from the same household come in.
It is important to remember though, that working with cats is very different from working with dogs. Cats are not small dogs and are a completely different species with their own needs, behaviours and quirks. If your grooming salon or mobile unit is used to mostly groom dogs, then there are some adjustments you may want to consider making if you want to work with cats as well. iPET Network approved tutor, and founder of The Kat Lady grooming business Katie Gwilt, shares five handy tips to help get you started.
Have a look at the overall space you work in. Are there units that don’t reach the floor or cupboards that have space for a cat to hide on top of? One of cats main instincts if they are frightened is to hide, so have a careful look at your salon and check for any hiding spots a cat may be able to fit into. They can squeeze into some pretty tiny places and get behind things like washing machines and driers so do a careful assessment. Also, make sure that the front door has a locking mechanism, especially if it is the only door between the cat being groomed and the street. Cats are VERY fast, so keep the door locked when working with one in case they escape by accident.
1.Groomingspace
Adding cat grooming to your existing business is both possible and rewarding, with the right training and preparation.
3.Smells Cats (like dogs) have a much more powerful sense of smell than us humans do and they use it to communicate with other cats as well as sense the world aroundManythem.catsdon’t get on well with dogs and even those that do are likely to react to the smells of new dogs in the environment.Ideally, keep a set of towels and tools

just for use with cats and wash them separately to those used with dogs. Ask the owner to perhaps put a towel or blanket in the carrier with the cat when they drop them off so they have something comforting with them. Have a look at the products you are using and always choose those with the least amount of fragrance. Cats’ skin is different from dogs and they don’t like strong scents on them.
4.Carrierhandling
If you have a cat at home, you will know that they are often very afraid of the vacuum cleaner and your hairdryer. Bear this in mind when grooming as the blaster driers are so much noisier. Always do a drier test before bathing the cat as once they are wet, you can’t really go back! Do a water test as well if possible, or at least closely observe the cat (especially if it is their first visit to the salon) and make a judgement call if bathing is best for the individual cat on that day at that time. You can achieve a full dry groom if the cat is scared of the water or starts to show signs of distress. Ideally, keep cat carriers off the floor when the cat is inside them so they feel lessPlacevulnerable.themon a stable table, wide shelf or other off-ground area and, if the cat is very nervous, put a covering over the carrier (leave one side open for fresh air).It is usually easier to take the cat straight from the carrier to the grooming table rather than put them into a holding area and then to place them back in their own carrier after grooming. If possible, try removing the lid of the carrier or the top half and you can start working with the cat whilst still in the bottom of the carrier to ease them in to grooming.Puttingyour arms inside the carrier isn’t advised and it isn’t a great start to try and tip them out of the carrier if possible.

I strongly believe that they could get to know a better way to finish the grooming with shears, always valuing the dogs’ body structure and their own beauty. I have an online course where I show how to do a cute face, the Chanel Cut, with focus on the technique details. I also teach some of my techniques on Instagram and will be starting a YouTube channel soon, too. Another thing is the “updo” and the treatment for different types of dog coat such as hydration, nutrition and reconstruction. All of that helps the fur get softer so the groomer can have a better client to work on.

EVENT RECAP
PremierGroom
The organisers of the UK’s premier annual grooming event, Summit Groomer Training Group and Red Cape Ltd, are to be congratulated for arranging an event which was well organised and professional but with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Despite the heatwave, the hall remained comfortable and all the dogs appeared to be calm and stress free; no doubt helped along with copious amounts of Vita Canis Calming Spray being sprayed around the room at frequent intervals! The show achieved the objective of providing the opportunity for groomers to fine tune their competition skills, also encouraging newer groomers to enter the competition arena. Along with the competition, demonstrations, seminars and trade stands provided something of interest for competitors and spectators, groomers and non-groomers alike. This year, competitors took up the challenge and demonstrated their skills in competing for one of the many fantastic prizes on offer with the ultimate award of Best Groomed Dog carrying a £750 cash prize. 18 classes were judged with awards for gold, silver and bronze places in each class. An additional prize was awarded for the Best Transformation, and the Spectators Special Award was an opportunity for members of the audience to choose their favourite out of the Open & Champion class winners. Best Groomed Dog (sponsored by Heiniger) was selected from the gold placed dogs from all Open and Champion classes and there were also prizes for Reserve Best Dog (sponsored by Heiniger). A raw diet for dogs consists of a balanced mix of muscle meat, bone and organs, mimicking the diet of wild canines. It may also include a healthy selection of fats, vegetables and seasonal berries.
Dogs are facultative carnivores. This means that their primary source of nutrition should stem from meat, but that they can, and do, eat some plant material. These plant fibers help to develop a robust system of protective bacteria which is part of their immune defenses. They could even, in dire circumstances survive on a plant-based diet for a short time – however, long term a plant diet poses a spectrum of health problems as it is devoid of those all essential amino acids that are found so readily in raw meat.
This is one of the first things owners comment on when they begin feeding raw to their pet. In the absence of those fillers found in processed food, the “end product”, your pet’s stool, is smaller, firmer, easier to pass and even helps express their anal glands on exit. Less fermented grains also means significantly less aroma and it’s easier to dispose of which makes for a happier pet guardian.
A diet that is lower in carbohydrates, is naturally low in the sugars that unhealthy mouth bacteria thrive on. Dogs can get gum disease too and this has a downstream health impact on their pancreas, heart and brain too. In fact a healthier oral microbiome is associated with lower inflammation in your pet full stop. FeedRaw
3. Improves toilet habits
1. Helps maintain a healthy weight Obesity is the number one health issue facing our pet population today.
NEWS Top10Reasonsto
When it comes to our own personal nutrition, we are aware of the benefits of avoiding a highly processed diet, so why should this be any different for our pets? The fact is, pets are even more susceptible to the pitfalls of a processed than we are. They are carnivores and incapable of handling such processed carbohydrates. As pet parents, we are in control of what our furry family members consume, and there is nothing better for your pet than a species specific raw diet, which offers the healthiest and most natural option for your pet.

9. Balanced energy levels
6. Supports healthy bones and joints
Raw bone is a key component of the raw diet and is a rich source of calcium and phosphorus in the exact ratios required for bone health, repair and growth. Raw food also contains connective tissues, which is an excellent source of chondroitin and glucosamine as well as collagen to support your dog’s joints and keep them healthy.
A raw diet is high in the healthy unoxidised fatty acids, omega 3 and 6 as well as the key amino acids for hair production. This means their fur is kept oh so soft and shiny, without excess shedding.Bella&Duke’s customers have also reported that their dog smells clean and healthy without that ‘dirty dog’ smell.
Eating food that satisfies their biological needs not only supports your dog’s physical health, it supports their mental wellbeing too. A healthier gut helps make all important neurotransmitters to keep your dogs happy as well as healthy.
We now know that good gut health plays an important role in mood, memory and focus. We also know that pets fed a varied raw diet have a more developed gut microbiome, particularly with some key longevity species. This contributes to your dog’s mental wellbeing and also supports memory and learning. The healthy fats in raw food help to protect and support your pet’s brain which may reduce cognitive decline as they age.
10. Supports cognition and emotional health
The veterinarian approved pet food subscription consists of nutritionally balanced and easy to use meals which are comprised of raw meats minced and mixed with purposeful seasonal fruits and vegetables. There is also an option for pets whose health benefits from an exclusion diet, through a single protein range which also excludes fruit and vegetables. Extras such as treats, bone broth and pet health and wellness products can be added onto your subscription as and when you need them. Each delivery comes frozen to ensure all nutrients are locked in to enrich your pet’s diet.
dog food meal ingredients
Mark Scott, CEO of Bella and Duke, said: “We are constantly finding new ways of improving our own diet. We’re well aware of the dangers of having processed foods in our diet, so it doesn’t make sense to feed this to our pets.
After losing their dogs to cancer, Mark and Tony co-founded Bella & Duke upon researching the negative impacts of processed foods on our pets. They launched Bella & Duke with an aim to educate other cat and dog owners on the nutritional outcomes of their pets’ diets and to challenge the pet industry on the nutritional standards in conventional processed foods.
5. Glossier skin and coat
8. Balanced Behaviour
Switching to a healthier, natural raw diet has proven to provide a range of health and happiness benefits for your pet. “Our pets have always been right by us, so it’s time we do right by them and our mission at Bella & Duke is to help pets live a happier life.”
Just as important with a raw food diet, are the foods which are excluded such as grains or grain substitutes. Emerging research correlates much higher joint inflammation with grain consumption.

7. Supports the immune system
According to their Pet health & happiness survey 2021, 77% of Bella & Duke customers reported an improvement in the health and shine of their pets coat within eight weeks, 75% agreed it aided their pets digestion and 58% reported improvements in their pet’s weight after moving them to a raw food diet. You can find out more about the nutritional benefits and Bella & Dukes product offering www.bellaandduke.comat: & Duke premium beef raw
From puppies and kittens to senior dogs and cats there are subscriptions to fit your pet’s needs at every stage of its life. Benefits of a raw diet can include improved digestion, boosted immune systems, increased energy levels and a glossier coat.
A raw diet provides both healthy protein and fats in the ratios they thrive on , meaning that your dog will have plenty of consistent energy to join you on walks, explore and interact with the world around them. Goodbye processed food sugar slumps and snoring on the sofa!
Raw meat provides high-quality protein aminos and key bone fibers which support a healthy gut lining. The gut is both the headquarters of your dog’s immune system, sending important health signals around its body, and the gatekeeper for toxins, keeping them at bay and supporting overall immune health.Ameasured amount of vegetables and berries provides an array of immune-supporting vitamins as well as antioxidants and phytonutrients which help your dog to stay healthy and keep their immune system strong.

After doing my first show at Groomfest & then The Great British Grooming Show I had the pleasure of meeting all of my wonderful clients as well as other groomers in the industry. The most common question I got asked was “Can you do a logo on a backdrop” as I had my very own logo on display behind me. I went away and found the best way to do them myself in house by hand and it just grew from there. They make a great statement inside the salon especially as a backdrop for your after images of your grooms. It also saves you having to add your watermark to every image after taking the photo.
They’re also great for outdoors as signage or direction signs to your salon. They’re fully customizable and available in a wide range of colours and sizes.

During covid I lost my job as a manager at TUI, I thought what can I do with my life and the path and my Border Collie Luna, led me to grooming. Whilst creating my salon, Cheadle Dog Grooming, I realized that there was a lack of designers specializing in the grooming industry and saw the need for somebody who could relate. Hence CTD being born. It’s just grew and grew since then and now I have hundreds of designs under my belt from clients all over the world.

A lot of the time grooming salons can look very plain as it’s difficult to find suitable things to go inside due to the blasters and dog hair, but with acrylics then drill into the wall and are wipeable with a damp cloth. They are robust & they also make your salon look amazing!
Chante Tiara Design is a one stop shop for your business needs. I do everything from hand drawn logo designs, (if you’ve ever wanted your own pooch within your logo then this is possible) as well as more simplistic designs to more complicated ones. I also do Brand Packages to give your small business that elevated, professional, cohesive look for an affordable cost. A brand package can be tailor made to suit your needs. This can include things like Business Cards, Appointment Cards, Flyers, Price List, Acrylic signage, Social Media templates etc.
I can’t stress enough the importance of investing in a strong brand identity for your business whether it’s a small summerhouse in your back garden or a big high street salon chain. Your logo/ brand is the first thing you see when you check a business Facebook page or Instagram. With a world driven by social media, you need to stand out in a very competitive market and I make that process a lot easier and less daunting.
It’s worth noting that everything I do is bespoke and made by me. It’s not something you can just buy off the shelf. If you’re looking for something truly unique then I’m the designer for you.
I see CTD as a household name and for anybody that has a business especially the grooming industry. I want it to be the “Christie’s” Or “Simpsons” for design. It’s well on it’s way and I have a lot of exciting things in the pipeline
My name is Chanté Merrigan & my business is called Chante Tiara Design (Tiara being my middle name) and my social media is @chantetiaradesign for Facebook & Instagram

HowLeucillincanbethe groomers’bestfriendin tacklingclipperrash
Unfortunately, clipper rash is not always detectable before leaving the salon, meaning that unknown to both the groomer and owner, the dog maybe going home with a skin irritation. The condition often goes unnoticed until the dog begins to aggravate the skin until it becomes sore.
• Blade choice and direction. If the dog has a pale skin and coat, or is vastly overdue, a longer blade and clipping gently with the lay of the coat could be •advisable.Cliponce, don’t clip over the same area again and again.
• Always use cool and well-lubricated •blades.Groin areas. Some dogs are very sensitive, so it’s prudent to be careful clipping. Especially around the genitalia.
A good spray of Leucillin over the skin and coat, especially of sensitive areas, gives reassurance that the dog has left the salon with an extra level of insurance against clipper rash.
If you are interested in becoming a salon stockist, please contact us directly for an information pack and free sample.
Leucillin is a unique antiseptic, which cleverly mimics the body’s own immune system. Leucillin replicates the leukocytes (white blood cells) naturally produced chemical used to fight infection caused by invading pathogens (germs). Leucillin provides the groomer with a user-friendly solution applied topically. It is skin pH neutral and will not sting or irritate. Leucillin is a natural antiseptic, destroying harmful pathogens on contact, creating the perfect environment for healthy skin. Leucillin can be safely applied to all skin types, including in ears, eyes, mouth, sensitive and allergy-prone skin. With its incredible 99.99999% germkilling efficacy, Leucillin tackles trapped infection caused by matting and can stop clipper rash in its tracks. For mild skin trauma, Leucillin’s skin pH neutral formula soothes and calms the tissue and removes surface pathogens which could cause discomfort and be the catalyst for causing secondary infection. Leucillin is an incredibly versatile antiseptic and can also be used for first aid instances as well as cleansing weepy eyes, irritate ears, skinfolds and wrinkles.
Clipper rash, as the name may suggest, isn’t always caused by hot clipper blades. Clipper rash is an irritation or trauma to the top layer of skin more commonly occurring after matted or particularly dirty sections of coat are removed, particularly from hygiene areas. Whilst not necessarily severe, clipper rash can be itchy and uncomfortable, causing the dog to scratch and lick the area, causing a secondary infection which, if left, can quickly escalate into something much more serious.

Often known by many names; clipper burn, clipper sensitivity, clipper irritation, razor burn… Clipper rash is one of the most common injuries in grooming salons and it doesn’t just happen to inexperienced or new groomers, it can happen to professionals with a career of experience. From a business perspective when a pet has been affected by clipper rash the owner will often place blame on the groomer and may not return.

Created from our Revolutionary insulated panel, the Palace provides groomers with unrivalled benefits never seen before in the industry! This amazing new concept was born due to our lining's incredible lifespan - they often out live the vans they were placed in - so we created a demountable pod where your business can be moved on to the next chassis easily when needed - or if you no longer wish to be mobile, you can demount the pod and work from your garden!
The Portable Palace WinnerGroomingVanoftheYearGoing Mobile…
Say goodbye to having to buy a whole new van and conversion every few years - simply move your Palace from one chassis to another with zero down time and when the time comes and you no longer want to be mobile, simply Wet Pet Conversions 01258 837779 www.wetpetsconversions.co.uk
• Once you choose to retire from mobile grooming you can remove the Palace, sell the chassis and work from the Palace in your garden instead of having to buy a parlour or convert a room in your house.
• You never need to buy a Brand new chassis that can depreciate - simply buy used a chassis and then swap them out as they get too old.
• If the chassis is involved in an accident or breaks down you can simply remove the body, place it on the ground and work from your driveway whilst you wait for it to be repaired.
• Can be driven on a normal car driving license
• Smaller than its LWB Van equivalent but provides a more workable space inside that is highly customisable as there are no van strutts or vehicle constraints
• As the chassis ages, the Palace can be removed and placed onto a brand new chassis - resulting in a much cheaper cost than having to buy a whole new van and conversion with next to no downtime
• The lining will not out live the vehicle like so often seen with used van conversions. You then have to sell the van & conversion and then buy a new van and conversion and wait whilst it is converted. Whereas with the Palace, you can keep the pod forever and change the chassis as you need to.
• When you choose to move home, you can take the pod with you and this portability combined with the size means they will not normally require planning permission in your garden.

Trailers Made from our Revolutionary insulated panel, our VCA Approved Grooming trailers provide the perfect solution if you would like to work from home and be mobile without the running costs associated with a van - with no tax or MOT required with trailers! You can leave the trailer on your drive way or hitch up with your vehicle when ever you need to. And when you have finished being mobile you can permanently demount the trailer from the axels and use it as a Garden Pod!
