The annual Premier Groom competition staged at The Kennel Club Building, Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire on Sunday 13th August 2022, attracted a huge entry of a multitude of dogs and groomers from around the UK and Europe.
The organisers of the UK’s premier annual grooming event, Summit Groomer Training Group and Red Cape Ltd, are to be congratulated for arranging an event which was well organised and professional but with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The show achieved the objective of providing the opportunity for groomers to finetune their competition skills and also encouraging newer groomers to enter the competition arena. Along with the competition, demonstrations, seminars and trade stands provided something of interest for competitors and spectators, groomers and non-groomers alike.
This year competitors took up the challenge and demonstrated their skills in competing for one of the many fantastic prizes on offer with the ultimate award of Best Groomed Dog carrying a £750 cash prize. 15 classes were judged
with awards for Gold, Silver and Bronze places in each class. An additional prize was awarded for the Best Transformation, and the Spectators Special Award was an opportunity for members of the audience to choose their favourite out of the Open & Champion class winners. Best Groomed Dog (sponsored by Heiniger) was selected from the Gold placed dogs from all Open and Champion classes and there were also prizes for Reserve Best Dog (sponsored by Heiniger). The fantastic prizes included cash, trophies and products from The Pawdinary and ReQual.
Classes were observed throughout the day by judges of national and international acclaim:-
Joanne Botwood judging: Beginners, Pure and Cross Breed Freestyle and Best Groomed Dog
Liza Smith judging: Beginners, Intermediates and Best Groomed Dog
Mathew Spry judging: Spaniel & Setter, Hand Strip, Pure Breed Scissor, Poodle and Best Groomed Dog
Costin Stoica judging: Hand Strip, Spaniel & Setter, Pure Breed Scissor, Intermediate and Best Groomed Dog
Lisa Hart judging: Salon Freestyle Cross Breed, Asian Freestyle and Best Groomed Dog
Lakhi Thindal judging: Salon Freestyle Pure Breed, Poodle and Best Groomed Dog
There were seminars covering how to ‘Up Your Groom’ with Sally Hart and Equipment Care and Maintenance with Paula Bryan. Verity Hardcastle representing our sponsor Heiniger demonstrated a beautiful Poodle trim. Trade stands added to the occasion making available the most up-to-date equipment and supplies for purchase, as well as gift products and also stands covering a range of grooming and
training information.
The photographer for the day was Peter Hulance who patiently photographed all the competitors in all the classes before, during and after the competition. Along with natural shots and posed pictures of the groomer and dog, Peter also photographed the awards ceremony at the end of the day.
The main sponsors who made Premier Groom 2019 possible and who the organisers wish to acknowledge and thank were Heiniger and ReQual.

One of the UK’s leading online retailers for dog products is sniffing out two chatty canine companions to become the new voices of a first-of-its kind podcast, or “dogcast”, aimed at entertaining dogs left at home alone.
The hunt is on to find two talkative would-be hosts for a podcast with a difference.
Each week, the chosen dogs will be the stars of The Dogcast, an hour-long podcast, filling homes with the comforting sounds of canine chat, playful barks and soothing woofs.
The successful pooches will receive monthly doggy hampers full of treats and toys from the company behind the idea, Fetch Club Shop, while owners will be rewarded with a monetary amount per episode.
Applications are open at www. fetchclubshop.co.uk/blogs/news/
dogcaster-search, where owners are being asked to submit a short video or audio audition clip of their dog ‘talking’, along with a short explanation of why their dog should become one of the world’s first “barkcasters”. Applying pups must be friendly and get along well with other dogs.
The successful duo will be invited to record a bank of episodes in a dogfriendly studio, with access to unlimited treats, tummy rubs, scritches and snoot boops.
Episodes will be released weekly from October, and available on all popular podcast platforms, including Spotify and
Apple Podcasts.
Fetch Club Shop founder, Caroline Stronkhorst, is thrilled about the initiative: “Many owners leave the radio on for their furry friends if they’re not in the house with them. We’re huge podcast fans, and it just got me thinking - what if we could create content that our pets might appreciate!?
“Who knows, the successful puplicants might end up entertaining a huge audience with their conversations! We’re looking for two special dogs to bring this novel idea to life, to create a dogcast that will have our furry friends wagging their tails in delight each week!”
Maintaining the highest standards of hygiene is paramount for every grooming business, which is why it pays to look for professional grade washers and dryers for cleaning towels, blankets, pet bedding, uniforms and accessories.
Known for its robust and durable commercial laundry equipment, Girbau UK has launched its first professional grade Under Counter washers and dryers that fit underneath standard 900mm height counters. Both machines combine energy efficiency, ease of use and compact size with high quality, durable construction making them ideal for the demanding needs of a professional grooming business.
The Under Counter washer offers quiet long-life operation thanks its sturdy Quattro™ construction with durable shock absorbers that allow virtually vibration-free high-speed spinning. Manufactured using high quality stainless steel, it has cast iron stabilisers for higher spin speeds, better water extraction and increased spin efficiency. It comes in a choice of 6kg or 8kg capacity models with either a pump or gravity drain. The 180-degree opening door makes the machine easier to load and unload from a basket, while the professional grade door seal offers longer life and superior hygiene.
With an easy-to-use liquid crystal display user interface, the washer has 28 flexible programs, three of which are customisable, and has specialised disinfection and allergy settings to ensure the highest levels of hygiene.
The delayed start function can be used to plan ahead and set machines to run off-peak to optimise use of cheaper energy tariffs. It also comes with in-built service diagnostics.
The Under Counter dryer can be stacked on top of the washer to save floor space. The 6kg capacity model is available in both condenser and
vented versions and the 8kg capacity model is vented. The Sensi Dry system automatically determines the right drying time, saving energy and assuring fabric care. Its convenient auto programs save energy as the running time is automatically adjusted according to load size and the required dryness.
Butterfly drying ™ tumbling in a figure of eight movement, non-stop in one direction stops laundry from bundling and ensures long life durability of the motor and belt. The efficient lint filter has an automatic indicator to remind users to clean it for optimum energy efficiency and safety.
The dryer’s memory function remembers the last program used including any chosen settings, so if nothing needs to change, you can simply press start for the next load.
The new under counter washer and dryer are available to order from Girbau UK.

PATS Telford is gearing up to be the biggest show ever in the UK’s National Pet Industry Event’s history. The exhibition takes place at Telford International Centre, where three exhibition halls will host over 250 exhibiting companies and brands on Sunday and Monday, 1-2 October 2023.
The exhibition is the only event in the UK where buyers from grooming salons, specialist pet stores and garden centres can view all the latest pet product launches under one roof.
A major feature of the two-day show will be state-of-the-art grooming demonstrations and talks.
The Grooming Workshop, in association with For All DogKind, will include some of the country’s leading groomers. Demonstrations will highlight the knowledge and expertise required for traditional grooming techniques, as well as showcasing the latest modern
trends and creative ideas.
With an increasing number of pet retailers introducing grooming salons into their stores, the PATS programme of talks and demos will provide invaluable insights into this side of the business.
PATS organiser Gordon Thomas said: “We’re really excited to be running such a full programme of grooming talks and demonstrations in association with For All DogKind.
“The grooming demos have always been a highlight of PATS shows and it’s great to be staging such an interesting programme once more.”
The professional groomers taking part on behalf of For All DogKind include Sally Hart, of Tailwaggers Grooming in Kent, and Chris Briggs, of Briggy’s Dog Grooming in North Devon.
Sally was a huge success when she last gave a demonstration at PATS Telford in 2019, and she admits to being delighted to return to the exhibition.
“I love PATS Telford, it’s a brilliant show for everyone in the pet industry,” said Sally. “It’s great to see that grooming plays a huge part in the exhibition and to be asked to share some of my knowledge and expertise is a real honour.”
Chris shared Sally’s sentiments, stating: “I’m so looking forward to demo-ing at this prestigious event. It will also be brilliant to speak to visitors on the For All DogKind stand.”
For All DogKind has been a regular exhibitor at PATS exhibitions, and director Laura Redstone expressed her delight at presenting this year’s grooming programme.
“You can expect to see some world class groomers in the demo area, providing incredible and not-to-bemissed demonstrations,” said Laura.
“Our demos will provide invaluable grooming tips across a variety of different dog breeds. Our experts will also be
sharing their knowledge on how to start up and run a successful grooming business.
“For All DogKind is one of the most used natural grooming ranges in the UK and our experts will share how using the brand’s products has made a difference to them, their dogs and their businesses.”
Laura continued: “If you’re in the pet industry then PATS Telford is an essential event on the calendar. Every groomer has an opportunity to sell retail products to their clients, and PATS is a perfect way to see what’s out there.
“I would encourage groomers to visit the show to gain free valuable grooming tips and advice and see all the latest products to be launched.”
Winning an award in the PATS New Product Showcase can be the launch pad to huge sales. That’s according to companies whose new products have been recognised at previous exhibitions.
Manufacturers can be confident that successful products have a great chance of becoming bestsellers because a panel of pet retailers decides the awards. And past winners admit that winning an award can certainly increase the profile of the items to the trade.
The New Product Showcase is a great opportunity for visiting retailers to see and touch the new products they will be stocking for the coming season.
The Showcase is designed to help buyers to find easily the latest and most exciting products to hit the pet trade. Once visitors have seen what they like they then have the opportunity of visiting the stand of the manufacturer or supplier of that product to discuss it in more detail.
There is an information card beside each product, giving details such as suggested retail price and where in the show you’ll find the item’s exhibitor.
All entries in the Showcase will judged for the New Product Awards on the first morning of the show, so the results will be known and highlighted throughout the exhibition halls for the rest of the show.
There are eight award categories, including one for the Best Grooming Product.
To help make the visitor experience even more enjoyable and rewarding, PATS Telford offers free parking, free catalogue, and complimentary lunch voucher in addition to the regular tea or coffee voucher.
A full and up-to-date list of exhibitors is available on the website www.patshow. co.uk together with information on how to register for free entry.

We speak with some industry pros to find out all about grooming clippers, trimmers and more.
by @starfleetpets on Instagram.
Have you ever experienced your clippers tugging and pulling hair instead of cutting when you’re grooming? Do you find when you get a new blade out of the packet, it won’t cut, or better still, are you using the best scissors to get the best finish? These are just some of the most common questions that are frequently asked on Facebook grooming groups, from groomers who are struggling with their equipment.
When groomers’ tools break down, they are often frustrated. However, this is an industry problem and not just a manufacturer’s issue. Should we be asking “Is the industry letting groomers down?” and what happens when a groomer cannot fix a problem and whose fault does it become? Everyone has a responsibility to look after their tools, so it may not be a manufacturer’s problem if a groomer’s tool doesn’t work the way you would expect it to.
This is where I step in, Paula Bryan. I have been in the industry for over 35 years. I have observed that while the industry teaches students how to groom and style different breeds of pets, it does not tend to teach them how to look after the tools they use or explain what kinds of scissors they should use when creating a particular style.
Colleges also don’t tend to teach them how to care for their tools or explain which scissors are best for creating a quality cut. Kay Reynolds wrote “I completed this day a few years ago and literally changed everything I thought I knew but didn’t!!! It was one of the best training days I’ve ever done so informative, has saved me so much money, and my equipment lasts so much longer (between servicing).
I believe that the grooming industry would benefit from increased emphasis
on instruction in the proper selection, care, and maintenance of grooming tools. So, knowing and understanding the components of a clipper blade and how it works will enable you to tell if your blade is set up correctly, so it will cut evenly and smoothly, won’t drag, and leave lines, the blade will stay cooler and sharper for longer and knowing when the blade has expired.
The Clipit Clipper and Scissor Workshop I deliver online via Zoom, offers you the chance to expand your skills when purchasing clippers, blades, and scissors. You’ll learn about how to look after and maintain your equipment,
plus get tips on what to do when it fails, education when purchasing scissors and a course certificate. No experience or previous qualifications are required to attend the workshop; however, access to Zoom on a computer is required.
Overall, it’s important to note down the importance of working with only the best tools of the trade, and that’s where Clipit comes into play. Having he very best for your business is a must, so choosing Clipit really is a no-brainer for you and your grooms.
To find out more, please visit www. clipit-grooming.com/product-page/ clipit-pro-clipper-and-scissor-workshop
Do you find your clipper is heavy and cumbersome, leaves lines in the coat, battery does not always function correctly? Help is here with the Clipit Quattro Cordless Clipper, that only weighs in at 254 grams and because of its neat size can be mistaken for a trimmer and not a clipper. The easy to hold, slim hand piece reduces hand and wrist fatigue and makes it easier to manoeuvre in hard-to-reach spaces and delicate areas. Delivering 8,000 strokes per minute, it is the fastest machine in the marketplace, but its shape and weight make it easy to manoeuvre in difficult to reach places and on small animals. The cool running titanium blades are unique to the clipper, but because of their nano technology they are corrosion resistant, strength to density ratio, low noise, and 75% cooler than steel blades.
RRP: £175.00
With Opal, Heiniger AG sets new standards. The new clipper is extremely quiet. It is also impressively powerful and equipped with two speed levels. With 3100 double strokes per minute in fast mode (and 2600 in slow mode), this clipper works smoothly and quickly even through dirty and thick fur and hair. The latest lithium-ion battery technology ensures cordless clipping up to 240 minutes. It takes just one hour for a full battery recharge. Thanks to the built-in battery level indicator, it is always possible to check the remaining battery time. Visit heiniger.com
RRP: £332.88
Left-handed Dog Grooming Scissors By Abbfabb
Grooming Scissors Ltd Historically, left-handed dog groomers have found it difficult to source quality and true left-handed dog grooming scissors as they either simply did not exist and/or are very expensive.
Engineering left-handed dog grooming scissor is slightly more complicated than it is for right-handed scissors and as a result, it is more costly for manufactures to make smaller batches and hence smaller number of left-handed scissors are previously been available.
RRP: Starting at £45.00

Tanya Boylan tells us all about New Zealand-based luxury dog grooming business, Paws & Relax.
At P&R, we’re all about the grooming, the care and the animals. I used to have a business in the UK for many years before coming to New Zealand.
P&R is a luxury pet spa. Essentially, we offer really special services to our client’s pets, such as warm towels and dressing gowns during their groom.
It’s luxury treatment on a one-to-one basis, and that spawned the name! We have comfy cushions and a lovely couch for our furry friends.
We work with many anxious, nervous dogs and we even groom cats!
I’m also certified with IPG, and am currently an Advanced Professional Groomer/Master Groomer Candidate working towards my Master Groomer Certification. This is probably one major difference to my competitors over here,
and my instant rapport and love for all my clients.
I’d say there are more educational seminars and other similar things to attend in the UK than there are here. There is more support in the UK overall, as New Zealand is really small.
I always go to the UK for tips, advice or learning. There are only five million people in New Zealand so dog grooming is a lot bigger in the UK.
It would be nice to see groomers who are properly trained for the safety of pets here in New Zealand like there are in the UK. There are more opportunities in the UK, such as City & Guilds.
We have things such as branded ribbons and bowls that we offer our clients to add to those finishing touches! It adds a personal touch. There are pictures on our socials if you’re interested, so check them out!
We’re so lucky to have had 66 five-star reviews in 12 months!
Overall, it would be good if there were more regulations across the board for dog grooming. You should always be learning in grooming and always learn the new things that are coming out. As a groomer, you’re learning all the time. Keep current in day-to-day grooming as every day is different.
Look after yourself and get proper training!
Special thanks to Bill Betts, he’s amazing! For business directions, be sure to reach out to Bill on social media.
We’re all aware that cats are incredibly clean animals, and can tell that their skills with their ultimate paw and tongue combo are unmatched. However, that doesn’t mean that they’re perfect at taking care of themselves.
Putting a regular grooming regimen into place is vital, and it can be tough if your clients don’t fully understand what they should be doing. That’s where you come in!
Mistakes can lead to a very stressedout cat, and that’s what you’re here to remedy.
One of the first things that you should be telling your clientele is that they should be ensuring that their kittens are groomed from an early age. If your clients have decided to bring a kitten or two into the household then they should be ensuring that they are aware that praise and love come from grooming. It’s nothing to be scared of from their point of view!
Even if their new pet is a little older than the kitten stage, it’s important to build that grooming trust as early as you possibly can. The sooner you start, the better and you can make it a rewardingly positive experience for both parties.
The earlier clients are aware that the brush is nothing to fear, the easier it will be to convince the cats in question that everything is okay and that they are in a stress-free and protected environment.
Positive enforcement is one of the biggest musts here!
It’s a misconception that a cat should only be groomed every once in a while. Honestly, you should be reminding your clients as often as you can that their cats need to be brushed at least a couple of times every single week.
This goes double with long-haired cats, who have to be brushed a lot more often. At least once a day!
Remind your clients that these sorts of regular rituals will decrease the likelihood of things like furballs, matting and even
There are so many obvious mistakes that a pet owner can overlook. Here are some of the top things to let your clients know to keep an eye out for, as well as some things that you can recommend they come to you to remedy.Photo by @jaehun.park on Instagram
fleas that would be more prone to living in a hairier cat.
Speaking of matted fur, ensure that you’re using the correct equipment if you’re ever dealing with matter fur. There are specific pet-grooming scissors for a reason, as well as clippers, so don’t be tempted to just use your regular set of kitchen scissors!
Don’t forget that this applies to brushes also. Different hair lengths on cats require different brushes. There are even specialty brushes designed to not appear intimidating to cats, such as ones that fit around the shape of your hand.
Remember that cats can be agitated by matted fur. Be gentle and never pull on any of that pesky mess when grooming. Remind your clients that you’re specially trained to deal with this sort of thing, so they should be coming to you to deal with any pesky matted situations.
Ensure that you possess the correct knowledge to pass on to your clients. Demonstrating your knowledge of things like this is an excellent way to show your clients that you can be trustworthy and will potentially encourage return clientele.
Something else to consider may seem pretty general, but it’s important nonetheless and is a viable mention. Ensure that the overall grooming session is a positive one for the cats in question.
Things such as going with the grain when it comes to cat fur is something to note. You’d never pet a cat the wrong way, so why brush them like that? For extra love and cuteness, be sure to pay extra attention to spots that get the purrs
going.
If a cat seems to be enjoying being brushed or petted in a certain area, then giving some extra care to that particular spot obviously won’t go amiss to the cat and might even make them excited to see you again!
The last point to mention is nail care for cats. It’s something that’s so important to the life of a cat and should not be overlooked in the slightest.
A cat’s nails should be cut every couple of weeks. If this is an
unobtainable goal for your clientele, maybe recommend a scratching post or something similar to ensure a happy kitty. This will, to the cat, replicate a natural way of trimming their nails.
Overall, it’s important to boast these factors to your clients. Emphasise the importance of knowing the right stuff and be sure to let your clientele know that you’re the best person for the job! It will hopefully guarantee you more revenue and leave some happy, purring new friends at the same time!
Cats share common emotions with humans, such as boredom, loneliness, and even depression when their environment fails to satisfy them. Here are some top tips to share with your clientele from petguard.co.uk.
“Taking the time and effort to introduce some cat-friendly adjustments in the home can undoubtedly enhance both the well-being of your cat and your relationship with them” says Head of petGuard Marketing, Alex Bennett.
To celebrate our four-legged friends, specialist pet insurer petGuard shares tips on how to keep cats happy and healthy:
A cat’s nutrition is the key to its good health, and can have significant longterm benefits, potentially preventing serious, painful, and costly illnesses. A growing number of vets emphasise the importance of feeding canned food rather than dry food. Dry food contains little water content, high carbohydrates, and a higher proportion of plantbased over animal-based proteins. Additionally, being heavily processed in high temperatures, all essential nutrients are destroyed. These factors directly impact cat’s weight, bodily functions, and behaviour.
Just like humans, animals need physical activity to maintain good health. For those who want to encourage a more active lifestyle for their indoor cats, offering entertaining toys while away can be beneficial. However, it’s essential to remember that the owner’s personal attention plays a significant role in promoting the animal’s mental wellbeing. It is vital to find time for playtime with various toys, such as toy mice, cat trees, and ropes with fluffy balls.
Unlike their wild ancestors, domesticated cats crave human attention. Recent research shows that almost 1 in 4 cats and kittens bonded to their people, meaning they have attachments to specific humans, and not just humans in general. Regularly making time to snuggle, pet, and engage in play time can have a remarkable impact on their overall well-being.
Cats are wonderful creatures. They are kind, caressing, elegant, wayward but lovable. Undoubtedly, there’s bound to be at least one cat that has captured
the heart of anyone who has had the pleasure of their company in their home. For those fortunate enough to have a feline companion, ensuring their comfort and happiness becomes a reciprocal act, as they are sure to return the favour with affection and devotion.
Finally, it is important to consider cat insurance to ensure the cat is covered if in need of any treatment. “Cats are extremely curious and playful. That’s why it’s important to research your insurance options to keep them protected as they explore their world”, adds Bennett.
Cat behaviour is such a fascinating subject and once to study them you realise just how different from dogs they are across the board. As a cat groomer it is really important to learn the basics of how to read a cat and assess their body language.
It will give you so many clues on how they are feeling and what they are thinking. Cats can have very quick movements so having a heads up by closely monitoring them throughout the grooming process can help you keep the cats in your care as relaxed as possible as well as give clues as to when it may be time to pause or stop the groom.
A cat gives you so many signals just by looking at their head position alone before you even get to the facial features. Confident cats will walk towards you with their head up in a friendly posture. If they are hunting their head is lowered to the ground to be able to catch the scent and track the movement of their prey. Similarly, cats will also lower their heads if they are feeling threatened so have a look at the rest of the cat’s body position to deduce what mood the cat is in at that time. Sometimes when getting ready to strike they will move their head back and forth like a snake does. Cats will also tuck their head into their neck when feeling anxious and
make it look like it’s attached directly to their body.
Cats have an amazing sense of hearing. It is wider and more accurate than any other mammal except for bats. It is also multi-directional as cats can move their
ears 180 degrees. They can also move them independently of each other which is fun to watch. As well as having excellent hearing, the positions of a cat’s ears can give you a lot of visual clues about their mood. They can tell you how relaxed or annoyed a cat is if they are curious or feeling threatened. The

Every dog groomer’s dream is to get that smooth finish. For the smoothest cut you need the WAHL KM Cordless. I don’t think I could work without these now! They make life so much easier.”
- Professional dog groomer and TikTok star @lovemuddoglady
ideal position is in an upright position facing forward. As the ears start to flatten, you know that the cat is feeling more threatened. Before fighting, cats will pull their ears very close to their heads to protect them from the other animal so this is definitely something to be aware of. An in-between stage is the ears flattened and pointing outwards when they are starting to feel unsure and anxious. They can even turn their ears back which is a lookout sign to us humans if we are trying to touch them!
Cats’ eyes are beautiful and have a crystalline mirror at the back behind the retina called the tapetum lucidum. This is what shines in pictures when a flash goes off or a flash beam hits them and they are the inspiration for cat’s eye lights on roads. They also have an inner third eyelid called a nictitating membrane that helps keep them clean as well as protected. Although cats have excellent middle and far-distance sight, their close-up vision is fairly poor which is worth noting if you are grooming cats. The bigger and more dilated the pupils, usually the more stimulated the cat is. This can be because they are hunting but also because they are scared and anxious. A relaxed cat will have soft eyes with pupils more like sits (unless it is dark of course). I’ve found that keeping eye contact with cats can be really beneficial if you keep your eyes soft and do lots of slow blinks. It’s a calming and nonthreatening signal to most cats. If they are giving you a hard stare then avert your gaze whilst still keeping them in
your line of vision at all times.
Whiskers are very important to a cat and should be cut as part of the grooming experience unless there is a medical reason like they are growing into the eyes. They use their whiskers to help navigate their world as well as help with hunting. As their close-up vision isn’t good, just as they pounce on their prey their whiskers come forwards to feel exactly where to put the death bite. Cats who are getting ready to fight will also pull their whiskers close to their face (the same as they do with their ears) to protect them. Whiskers pulled forward can also mean they are curious and using them to feel vibrations in the air. The more they are pulled backwards, the more they are feeling afraid usually.
Cats make a variety of different noises and have learned to meow as a way to talk to humans. It isn’t something they
use with other cats! Some breeds of cats can be very chatty like Bengals, Siamese and Maine Coons. Many will chirrup and chatter, especially if they are watching birds outside. They will also hiss and growl when feeling anxious. You will hear cats facing off against each other or calling for a mate before any action occurs. Listen to the noises the cat is making but always check the rest of the body language to get a proper read on their mood. Changes in vocalisations can be warnings that they are unhappy, there is pain or a knot that you are trying to touch or even that they are enjoying what you are doing. Check the position of the mouth too. Baring teeth is always a warning sign to anyone near them and open-mouthed breathing is a sign of high anxiety usually in cats rather than overheating.
I hope you have enjoyed part one of this introduction to cat body language. Part two next month will look at the body itself including the tail and help to read cat signals better.
One of the things that we often say is a cornerstone of any business here at TGM is your customers. They should be at the forefront of your mind when making most of your decisions, so let’s find out why…
Much like any business, you’ll want to treat your customers and clients like royalty to expect return business at your grooming salon.
It’s hard to believe how much this can have a serious effect on your services and reputation, and dealing with dogs can even come across as easier than dealing with some customers who simply don’t hold up their end of the deal. Ultimately, you still need to provide the best service and ensure that you leave them as happy as can be.
Luckily, 99% of the time you won’t run into any customers who feel as though they have been treated unfairly. If you’re doing everything right, that is.
With the sheer amount of dog groomers around the UK, there is no reason why you won’t be seeing your customers multiple times a year unless they leave the local area. The only other exception is that there might be times when the groomer is at fault and drives their customers away, ultimately leaving the business worse off and bringing in less revenue.
So what is one of the most important factors in treating customers fairly? Naturally, the impression you leave with your clientele is of the utmost importance. Be sure to keep up to date with their feedback to find out what you can do better on the regular.
Their thoughts and opinions should
help to define what your business is, so checking in regularly is a must to find out what they do or don’t like!
Communication is key, as always, and how customers understand how your business works is incredibly important to stay up to date on. Do what you can to create a positive impression, and this will hopefully guarantee that they keep returning. This can only be achieved if you pay attention to their needs.
Remember one important thing when interacting with your clientele; the customer is always right. Unless something is completely out of the ordinary, think to yourself about how you’d like to be treated in any environment where you’re the client.
What sort of mannerisms would you like to view? What tone of voice would you like to be spoken to in? If you were handing over your pet to be cared for, what health and safety precautions would you like to be aware of in advance?
These are all things to consider, and it all comes back to the keyword that we’re looking at within this article. Fairness is key, so be sure to offer what you’d expect in return.
It’s no secret that, every now and then, you might fall upon the odd client who is expecting far too much and leaves an undesirable taste in your mouth. This can happen unwarranted, however, it’s important to think about what may have caused this. Could you be partly to blame? Maybe not, but retrace your actions anyway and take responsibility to help mend the groomer-to-client relationship that you have been working on developing. Again, the customer is always right, and a little apology can go a long way.
It’s incredibly important to charge your worth, that’s a given. However, don’t let yourself be walked all over when it comes to your prices. Treating customers daily means fair, not offering outrageously low prices that will bankrupt your business. Don’t go overboard, and don’t do the bare minimum. A fair service will do wonders, and the right price could be another amazing word-of-mouth talking point for your clientele to pass on to their friends, family and colleagues.
Reassurance is also key. You may come across owners who are leaving their pups alone for the first time or have concerns about being away for extended periods of time. This is okay, and completely valid on their part if they have worries. It’s important to not see this as any type of hostility or doubt about your skill level. Instead, reassure your clients that their pets are in good hands and do what you can to enforce the fact that their furry friends will be safe and secure in their owner’s absence.
As a dog groomer, your ultimate thoughts should be the health, safety, well-being and overall satisfaction of the clients and their pets. Do everything in your power to make sure that they are given a reasonable amount of fairness, compliance, communication and care when it comes to their visit and you’ll surely reap the benefits of what this can do to your business.
Just like any harassed shopper at the till in Aldi, having dodged the dog beds, chalk paint and log burners in the middle aisle, I seem to believe that I really need some vitamin water, sugar-free mints and a scented candle just as I reach check out. I don’t need them, I didn’t know they existed, but invariably one or all end up on the conveyor belt.
Impulse purchasing at the till point has been the bane of most parents’ lives and one of the oldest retail tricks in the book for as long as shops have existed, so taking advantage of the browsing shopper with their purse out is no new business lesson.
What is worth considering is how to take this successful business tactic and make it relevant and profitable for your grooming business.
No matter how great your reputation, or how high your returning customer ratio is, there are only so many hours and so much space you can fill in your salon. As such there will always be a ceiling to the profit potential from that client base, irrespective of how bulging that client book may be. Only so many clients within drive time, and only so much fur to clean and clip!
Working hard and doing your best at your craft is admirable but considering boosting your income by adding value to your service is not only amazing, it may just keep you in business!
Offering ongoing advice, taking cute photographs and sharing joy at their pet’s latest trim will enhance your client’s experience and relationship with you. But there are ways to enhance that further. By stocking brands they want, need recommending or best of all, in the old Aldi way, that they never even knew existed! What’s more exciting
than being presented with something to tempt you that you never knew you needed, especially from someone you trust?
Stocking and selling shampoos, brushes and sometimes treats and snacks is a great way to tempt clients and many groomers have grasped this opportunity as a first dabble into growing their business. Offering full spa experiences as well as essential clipping is another way groomers are expanding their offer.
That offer has moved on inextricably since the days of passionate individuals with their mobile services and a pair of
sharp scissors. Groomers are trusted experts, relied on by owners and leaned on in bad times as well as good. Clients want you to adore their pet as much as they do and with that regular personal contact comes a strong emotional bond. Having sold keepsakes for every occasion thinkable for the last 8 years, we understand the emotionally driven business more than most. There’s a story behind every gift we sell whether it be birth, celebration or memorial. Several years ago we began to see the rapidly growing sales of pet keepsakes and so in 2021 we began researching the market and saw a huge emotional drive behind
each purchase. We know how much our pets, especially dogs and cats meant to our families, and we know that price was often no object to the amount owners were willing to spend to express that love. Yet what we were surprised about, was the obvious lack of opportunity to buy those items in a trusted environment. Until now, 0nline was the only option available for pet keepsakes.
After speaking to the leading pet retailers, veterinary practices, groomers and a number of other pet care specialists, we designed our new pet keepsake brand, Oh So Precious, to bring items their customers were buying or looking for online, into places they
could see and touch them, but most of all places they trusted. Items such as fur bottles, pawprint kits, clay impression kits, keepsake boxes and thoughtful memorial gifts. The items in the range were chosen specifically to sit alongside those businesses to complement their offer or service and offer critical supplementary revenue opportunities.
Whilst I have been known to fall for buying a paddling pool when shopping for pasta bake ingredients at Aldi, I am more of a believer that it is the more complimentary products or services that are the most surefire way to get a client to spend more without feeling aggrieved. Moreover, those
that are presented at a convenient time, that inspire and demonstrate an understanding of what you love, but most of all, offered to you by someone you trust, is the best way to keep them coming back and create a more sustainable and profitable business.
Oh So Precious is a brand new range of pet keepsakes and memorials to treasure special moments, milestones and memories with your pet.
Oh So Precious is the latest brand to be launched by The Lovely Gift Group and will be exhibiting at Groomfest. Visit www.ohsoprecious.co.uk for more information or to become a stockist.
With this issue of TGM, we’re reflecting on some of the advice that groomers have left us with over the past couple of years. We’ve amassed a huge collection of inspirations, as well as advice, so here are some of our top picks…
Every issue, we ask our selected groomer of the month for some useful gems of advice that we think an upcoming groomer might like to hear. Sometimes, all of the information doesn’t make it in, so here’s an extra dose of advice that some of our previous contributors would like to share with you all!
Nadia ultimately wants to encourage groomers to be kind to other groomers. The industry can be tough, and nobody should be mean, unkind or bully any other fellow groomers within the industry.
“No one really talks about this enough and it can be very toxic to one’s mental, physical, and spiritual health,” Nadia explains, “Groomers are very sensitive and we should show more support, and encouragement to keep us all going. I hope by raising awareness we can do
better going into the future for the next generation of groomers.
Jemma Birch
Jemma says: “We have a motto at K9 Heaven and that is Humanity over Vanity, you’ve heard of the phrase the customer is always right well in this industry that isn’t true. We will always do what is best for the dog after all, it’s their experience it’s for their welfare, we don’t want fluffy fearing the grooming environment because the owner wants fluffy to look pretty and in pain over being comfortable and pain-free.
“And I believe this is one of my biggest unique selling points. Alongside this, we are also known as the grooming parlour that will take on the dog that no other groomers will. We have gained a huge client base of dogs that other groomers have refused, given up on or just not bothered with. One other little touch we do offer is free advice
“I think every business owner should really take time to spend creating content and adding value while they grow their business,” Brian says, “Those loyal clients will follow you as you develop. They love the journey and you could inspire some to open their own business one day.”
“After spending some years fundraising and offering free grooms to rescue sled dogs in the North West, I realised that numbers in rescue were increasing and those offering foster/kennel spaces were starting to dwindle as money ran out.
“It’s a never-ending battle and one which is made worse when owners aren’t aware of the help and support that is out there, a possible lifeline for keeping their dogs long term.
“Of course, prevention is better than a cure and researching the breed is key… but there are ways to support owners if they find themselves struggling with certain elements of owning a sled dog.”
“I follow a lot of groomers on Instagram and I think we all need an online presence, business-wise. However, just because someone looks like they have it
all together online doesn’t mean they’re perfect, and you’re not!
“We all occasionally get an aggressive dog that we have to send home ungroomed for their safety and our own, or we get ghosted by a no-show... But we are all in this together, one pampered pup at a time!” Leona says..
“Oh, and always have an emergency chocolate stash handy for the days where you drop your favourite scissors or the
dog poops on the table! Make friends with other groomers and go to seminars and training days.”
If you’d like to be considered for an upcoming Groomers of the Month feature or know someone who you think might like to be featured, then we’d love to hear from you! Please get in touch by e-mailing connor@tgmpublishing.co.uk for more information.
We look forward to hearing from you!
It has been so nice to meet so many pet professionals, and pet owners who are committed to putting the safety of dogs first and foremost, it’s been really heartening, and I am proud that Scotland now has many more people with this all important Canine First Aid training.
Because we have a problem here in the UK, and every week it seems there is news of yet another dog attack, or a dog that has been destroyed after a worrying aggressive incident.
This is of course a training issue, and with so many dogs starting their lives during the pandemic, many of these pets didn’t receive the vital socialisation they
needed.
But this is very much down to us as dog owners and carers, and it’s our responsibility to read the signs that a dog is uncomfortable or scared and pass on what we know.
Recognising these behaviours in dogs would reduce dog attacks ten fold, and I don’t think enough people are tuned in enough to canine behaviour, maybe treating their dog more like another human in the house, rather than what it is, a completely different species.
I am proud to support the Safe Pets and People Campaign, a national campaign backed by iPET Network and the RSPCA which is calling for all
pet professionals to have canine first aid training. And I am also keep that this training includes messages on prevention too.
So please, if you haven’t already, please look into doing a Canine First Aid course, it is such an important skill in your armoury, when working with some dogs who may have not had the best start where socialisation is concerned.
This month’s first aid tip is more of a warning, and it’s a seasonal reminder about planting bulbs.
As autumn approaches, many people are thinking about what bulbs they will plant in time for spring, but tulips, crocus and daffodil bulbs can all be toxic
This month has been all about Scotland for Team Bean, and I’ve had a wonderful time travelling around this fabulous country teaching at centres as I go. By Rachel Bean.
to dogs and cause sickness, an upset stomach or even death.
Seeing the first shoots of spring is always a wonderful thing, but many people do not realise that popular bulbs can cause serious harm to our dogs.
The toxins in bulbs are more concentrated than in the final plant and flower, so it’s important to watch out if your dog is showing an interest in the bulbs you are planting out.
If your dog loves to dig, consider bulbs other than daffodil, crocus and tulip, and for any dog make sure to store bulbs out of harm’s way in the home.
If you think that your dog may have eaten a bulb, try and work out what kind of bulb, and get them to the vets as quickly as you can.
Though an essential part of a spring garden display, daffodil poisoning can result in serious heart problems and issues with breathing and swallowing.
If you have any concerns at all it is always the best thing to get your dog to a vet immediately.
