S
ummer may have come to an end, however, for the autumn season, there’s still lots to look forward to. Salon International is just around the corner, Katherine Cox – Events Marketing manager for the event, provides us with all the important information and highlights, to get us ready. I spoke with Jamie Crawford from Ruthless Barbers who talks us through his step by step guide, for the perfect shave. Head to pages 22 and 24 to learn more about his secret tips. This month also features more cool content focusing on the education and training courses available within the industry. I spoke with Mike Taylor, Chris Foster and Stephen Handisides to share the courses available alongside, all the benefits they offer the individuals. As always, our industry is constantly growing and doing good, Daniel Granger from E4’s Body Fixers, recently rowed 50 miles for a gifted hairstylist: Mitchell Chambers, who was involved in a tragic Motocross accident in 2014 which sadly left him paralysed. Showcasing this triumph in our magazine is what makes our industry so fulfilling. If you have any stories like Mitchell and Daniels please get in contact with us. Hope you enjoy the read.

Happy 60th.
T
akara Belmont arrived in London in 1959 and now, some 60 years on, it was only fitting that this anniversary year should see the unveiling of a new-look London showroom. A select gathering of the UK media and industry associations arrived at Takara Belmont’s London HQ to celebrate this most auspicious occasion, tour the new state of- the-art showroom and indulge in luxury treatments and hairstyling; the centrepiece of which was the Yume head spa! Setting the scene, Managing Director Mr. Hoshina extended a warm welcome and expressed his appreciation of the media’s support. In a speech that highlighted the significance of this anniversary, he touched on the company’s journey and evolution, and its major accomplishments that have culminated in Takara Belmont’s global position and offering in the 21st Century. Cari-Anne Rawlinson, Takara Belmont’s Hairdressing Marketing Executive: ‘We were delighted to welcome our guests and immerse them in a Takara Belmont experience. Their response to the new showroom, the treatments and our equipment was very positive. We look forward building on our heritage and introducing more ground-breaking equipment in the future. This event gave us an opportunity to thank them and show our gratitude.’

Mayor of Tamworth supports House of Jones initiative.
A
Tamworth barbershop is encouraging its customers to ‘have the guts to check their nuts’ as part of a new campaign to raise money and awareness for testicular cancer. House of Jones Barbershop, based in Bolebridge Mews in the town centre, has joined forces with Baggy Trousers UK to get men talking about the illness, which is the most common form cancer among men aged 15 to 49. As well as raising awareness by opening the conversation with their clients, the House of Jones husband and wife team, Luke and Klinta Jones, have also created posters which they are offering to share with other businesses in Tamworth to display in male toilets and changing rooms. The campaign also has a fundraising element, and the business will be donating £1 to Baggy Trousers UK from the sale of every paraffin hand wax treatment provided between August and the end of the year. Mayor of Tamworth, Richard Kingstone, visited the barbershop this week to lend his support to the initiative and to try the paraffin wax treatment. Richard said: “I think this campaign supporting the Baggy Trousers charity is a wonderful and innovative way to get men to check themselves. Men are not always the best when it comes to looking after themselves and sometimes, we need a nudge and a bit of extra encouragement to make sure we are all fit and healthy.” Klinta and Luke have always been passionate about supporting worthy causes and find a different charity to support each year. Klinta said: “Because of our male client base, we felt this was an ideal opportunity to raise awareness of testicular cancer and break the stigma of men not taking care of themselves. We are excited to have The Mayor of Tamworth supporting our campaign with Baggy Trousers Charity.”
10 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.CO.UK
Baggy Trousers UK was founded in 2014 by Jack Broadley, who wanted to help others affected by the illness after experiencing testicular cancer himself at the age of 21. The charity aims to raise awareness of testicular cancer, provide financial assistance, support, education and practical advice to those affected and to promote and protect the physical and mental health of sufferers. House of Jones provides luxury salon experiences for men in Tamworth. The couple first met at the barber shop chair 10 years ago when Klinta cut Luke’s hair at a barbers in Birmingham. After crafting and honing her skills helping to run one of Birmingham’s best-known barbershops, Klinta decided to pursue her dreams and opened her own salon with her husband Luke. The paraffin hand wax treatment is great for maintaining healthy looking
skin and treating dry and cracked hands. Paraffin wax has numerous benefits for skin and general health. For more information, or to book a £5 paraffin hand wax treatment and help support Baggy Trousers, call House of Jones on 01827 68688 or book online via houseofjonesbarbers.com Any businesses or organisations which would like to support the campaign by displaying a Baggy Trousers awareness poster in their premises can email klintapjones@gmail. com. SKINCARE AND SHAVING
Hear it from a pro! We speak with Jamie, co-founder of Ruthless Barbers in Daventry to learn all about his top tips when it comes to skincare and shaving. Jamie’s’ profile Jamie has been a barber for 14 years and taught himself to cut hair form a young age. “My great grandfather taught me the art of straight razor shaving when I was 12 years old and I have been hooked on hair ever since.” Says Jamie. He has worked in many barber shops over the years eager to learn as much as possible and hone his skills by learning from other barbers. “I am now 2 years running midlands best wet shaving barber and am reentering Britain’s Best Shave 2020 to hopefully take home the British Title! I am also the Midlands regional educator for The Great British Barbers Academy and offer all sorts of training from basic barbering to advanced shaving and pattern work.” He adds. Jamie believes that male grooming is now such a popular and growing trend, and that it is down to him and his colleagues to make their clients feel 100% all the time. Jamie follows a key role when working with a client and that is, to ensure you always know as much as you can about the products being used on your clients, and then you can offer clients top tips and advice on how to style and work with their hair, skin and beard! “All too often I’m seeing Barbers use any old product to either shave with, or use as aftercare/aftershave, and it’s that, that can cause more irritation to the skin than anything else, so make sure your after care is the right product for that particular skin type. Also, make sure you have prepped the skin and hair properly before doing any kind of razor work. Especially a wet shave!” Says Jamie.

Performance! Especially when it comes to shaving and skin care. I always make sure my towels are hot and the skin is properly prepped! Starting with a good exfoliating scrub to cleanse the skin and ready the face, I use gloved hands for this before applying hot water with a brush.
Secondly, we apply a nice hot towel and entirely wrap the face. Prep myself 3 blades, I like to set mine on fire with Cool Care, but I don’t advise trying that at home! Or in your barbershop for that matter!! Then, before it cools too much remove the towel and apply a pre shave

“Make sure every customer knows not to keep touching the shaved area due to any irritation it can cause and to ensure they moisturise daily!” oil to really soften the hairs, followed by a hot lather applied in circular motions to the shave area. I always do my first pass with the grain to ensure ultimate comfort for the customer! Second pass, second blade, I go against the grain only after applying the second hot towel! Final pass, final blade. I use this to get any slight hairs I may have missed around the mouth and nose area, also to rid any lose hairs from under the gown by the collar. I apply another hot towel just to get those pores open and ready to be rehydrated with a nice refreshing aftershave balm! towel to close the pores straight after ensures all that moisture is locked in! “Traditional Barbering has always been something I’m very passionate about. To me barbering is a lifestyle, not a job. And that enthusiasm really reflects on my work. For me, cutting hair is so much more than just the haircut itself. “It’s about how we, as barbers, can
make our clients feel and look so good with such a short amount of time. What we do as barbers is a powerful thing, we can either make someone feel and look awesome, or look an absolute joke!” Follow Jamie on Instagram to see more of his work: @theoriginalscissorspinner or @ ruthless_barbers

Go green for growth A smart, sustainable barbershop can create a sustainable profitable future - and more loyal, satisfied clients too!
O
ne of the general keys to any small business success is growth. One of the specific keys to growth in the barbershop business is establishing a solid client base, then nurturing that base so it continues to grow. In 2019 and moving forward, one new key to client growth is establishing environmental sustainability. The facts are that for today’s younger clientele - the key market for growth - environmentally sustainable shops, and green products and services, are a passionate priority. The wallets of successful millennial gentlemen are very open to the type of high-end selfcare that the modern barbershop offers, but they’re just as equally concerned about both where and how they spend their time and money. In the UK alone, for example: • 56% of Brits buy sustainable, crueltyfree products exclusively • UK launches of sustainable, crueltyfree hair and skin products grew by 175% between 2013-2018 • UK sales of sustainable, cruelty-free male grooming products increased by 38% between 2017- 2018 Today’s hot barbershop is not only a reliable haven of community for the successful man on the move, it should also be a haven where he can trust that his barbershop’s commitment is to offering not only the best products and services, but also provide environmental sustainability. It’s this enlightened brand of business that will go a long way towards both building and then continuing to expand your faithful and flourishing future clientele.
24 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.CO.UK
Green Sustainability is Business Friendly Too In the past traditional barbershops may have considered the idea of sustainability as incompatible with business growth. Yet considering that barbershop operations in particular are among the largest energy users of any small business, demonstrating a commitment to economical energy use is actually one of the most cost-effective measures any barbershop can take. In addition to offering greener, healthier options on grooming products - which millennial clients are ever eager to purchase there are numerous, easily affordable ways in which any barbershop can demonstrate their commitment to a more sustainable business future. And this is the future younger clients passionately prioritise! A few simple examples would include: • Using recyclable product packaging • Using biodegradable bags instead of plastic and offering biodegradable product options • Using biodegradable disposable towels in place of laundering • Maintaining clearly labelled recycling stations to reduce landfill waste • Switching to a green energy supplier And when it comes to the type of greener products your clientele desires, there are any number of smart options. One of the newest selections is from SEVEN POTIONS. This forwardthinking company not only provides an environmentally conscious line of premium yet affordable stylish
grooming products for today’s man, they’re also committed to sustainability. RETAIL
The benefits of retail Jo Martin, Marketing Director at Sally Europe gives her top advice on how retail can help develop and positively impact your bottom line.
Y
our barbering services may be your primary revenue driver, but don’t underestimate the lucrative potential of retail to your business. Whether your barbershop already has a dedicated retail area, or you’re thinking about introducing one for the first time, here are some top tips for making retail profitable:
Less is always more While it can be tempting to put all your products on display at once, remember not to overload the retail area. Instead make it easier for your clients (and staff!) to find what they’re looking for by categorising shelves, showcasing new — and seasonal — lines and grouping products by collection. Also, make sure your retail area is tidy, fully always stocked and dust-free. First impressions really do count and small details like these can be the difference between 10 retail sales in a day, or none! And, of course, if a product isn’t selling after a period, take the hint and remove it. You have a fixed amount of shelf space available, so why fill it with products that don’t sell?
You need to give clients a reason to buy As professionals, clients will
26 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.CO.UK
look to you to make recommendations about which products they should use at home between specific treatments to prolong and enhance results. When you have a client in your chair, educate them by talking them through what you’re doing — be it a cut, beard treatment or an add-on facial — mentioning specific products as you go. Then, at the end of their treatment, be sure to make some recommendations about what products will keep their hair and skin looking and feeling great. After all, while treatments are your top earner, stocking complementary retail products in-house will prevent your clients from going elsewhere to purchase items you’ve recommended!
Don’t forget the tillpoints Last, but not least, never underestimate the power of strategically positioned retail products at your till area. Remember that price is a key motivator when customers are considering add-on purchases at checkout. To encourage impulse sales, consider keeping all products to £10 or less and make sure they’re easy to grab (think travel-sized products — like Maria Nila’s
Style & Finish Finishing Spray, 100ml, £4.99 ex VAT or Osmo’s Fibre Sculpt, 100ml, £4.99 ex VAT— as well as handy tools like razors and scissors). Similarly, use these focal areas to showcase current 2 for 1 offers, to incentivise customers to stock up for Christmas or holiday season.

Just keep rowing… Mitchell Chambers was involved in a tragic Motocross accident in 2014 which sadly left him paralysed. Mitchell has trained to become a competent and gifted hairstylist.
N
ow with the use of a standing wheelchair purchased through support, generosity and kindness, Mitchell has an amazing future ahead of him. E4’s popular programme; Body Fixers, include a variety of young professionals who aim to help people with extreme and shocking beauty and hair fails. Daniel Granger is one of those young professionals who is a brilliant attribute to the team. Daniel specialises in hair replacement, he is a global Educator and Schwarzkopf Ambassador, and aims to inspire and motivate fellow hairdressers of all levels. Daniels aim on the programme is to restore confidence and to understand, his client’s stories and decide on how to create something his clients have always dreamed of. He decided to help Mitch in any way he can. Daniel explains how he first read about Mitch’s story via social media and was instantly drawn to his story as it was so close to home. “I was once a motocross enthusiast myself at the age of 14, but this quickly came to an end when one of my foster brothers had an accident which put him in a wheelchair for life. He was older and an inspiration to me before his accident, however afterwards I watched his world crumble to drug abuse and mental health issues and sadly we lost touch over the years.” Mitch on the other hand wasn’t to be beaten. He was unfortunately left in a wheelchair following the accident; however, he’s still giving back and doing what he loves with the assistance of a stand-up wheelchair – and it just so happens to be hairdressing! “I felt like damn I’m so inspired and I want to help you walk again.” says Daniel.
28 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.CO.UK
CHARITY FOCUS The community support from Founders of Akito Scissors and fundraisers for Mitch (John and Kate) have built something incredible. Daniel decided to row 50 miles over two days from Stafford to Nottingham to raise moneys towards making walking possible again for Mitch. Daniel kept his social media followers updated with what he was planning for Mitch and encouraged his followers to help if they were able too. “Helping others is rewarding in more ways than you think. I boosted my own mental and physical health, both knowing what I was doing was going to help a friend out but also helped me keep driven and focussed. I would be rowing on the rowing machine in the gym, in my own world and often talking to myself having my own staff meetings!” Says Daniel. Nothing prepared Daniel for the 50 miles he rowed, he had never done anything like this before, and with the weather at it’s hottest. Daniel experienced dehydration at its very finest and cramps set in within the first 3 hours. “Adam my teammate and I completed the first day in 8th position – yes, I can be competitive in everything I do! My body was in shock every muscle hurt and my mind was saying no more you have done enough. With support from my partner Katie, who brought my son Frank along too, to catch me when I was falling
and cheer us on at every meet point gave me the strength to continue that I needed.” Daniel found himself pushing even harder on the second day. He was surrounded by friends, family, colleagues and his social media following backing him all the way. “The final lock site had me lifting the 70-kilo boat above on to our shoulders and running down the bank, trying not to collapse and fall in the water! Counting 20 paddles to each side to stay in good rhythm myself and Adam paddled with everything we had. The final 12 miles was the hardest by far. We weren’t going to drop out, we were going to finish this race for Mitch. Dig deep, dig hard, give yourself a reason to keep
going no matter how hard or long the journey looks ahead, think of the end goal and just keep paddling learning along the way stroke by stroke, and you will get there.” Daniel was keen to help Mitch and you can too. “Believe me it’s the best feeling in the world.” Says Daniel. BOSS TALK
Watch this space! This months Boss Talk is with Joe Mills from The Soho lounge, have a read to find out how his career took off.
How did you get into barbering, was it something you always planned? I wouldn’t say it was planned. I started hairdressing at the age of 16 and soon realised that I had a passion for men’s hair. When I started out 34 years ago (ouch) most of my mates had flat tops and skin fades, so I had to learn and from then it just became part of the journey.
How would you describe your hair journey? It’s been intense and life changing on lots of levels. My life would be very
32 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.CO.UK
different if I had not made the leap to open my own business 20 years ago. I have met a lot of people along the way and consider myself lucky. I’m driven and have a very strong work ethic that has helped massively but not always in a positive way. I still get excited about work and this can be anything from working in the shops with clients, to working on a shoot with a magazine or a campaign shoot with a new photographer. There are things I could have done differently, but to be honest, I’m not sure I would have changed anything.
When did you start your business and what differences did this make to your life? My salon, The Lounge Soho, opened in 1998 and my barbershop Joe and Co, opened two doors away in 2010. My latest venture, MILLS barbershop, opened in the flagship Primark in the centre of Birmingham in April. Being a session stylist or a behind-thechair stylist is very different to be a business owner. Then you have a lot of responsibility for the people you have around you. If you fail, it has an impact on more people than just you. That
BOSS TALK sits heavily on me and I don’t take the business lightly.
What has been your best moment? I think the best moments have been the realisation of certain ambitions. Opening the Lounge Soho was a big moment for sure, but each of the stores has felt like that. I feel a real sense of pride about them and the people who have helped me get there and continue to support me.
What has been your worst moment and why? I don’t think there is a specific moment but being a small business owner has its stresses that exist continually and that never changes. You learn to manage them better as you gain more experience, but they will always exist.
What advice do you wish you’d been given? You can’t do it all and to make sure the people you trust have your back.
How does your work/ life balance fit with your professional responsibilities? I am lucky that I spin a lot of plates and have a lot of help to allow me to do that; my management team make this possible. I am also a father and the time with my son is very important to me, so I must make work fit in around that rather than him fit in around work. Time management has always been tough, and I have always struggled with it, but I have learnt to prioritise things so that it can work out better. Finding the balance is the challenge as things change so much each month with shoots or shop-based things, but you must allow yourself some space or things fall apart quickly. I tend to wake up early and fire out a lot of emails to the team and then the same at the other end of the day. My team are used to it and they are not expected to work the hours I do or respond, but it allows me the head space.
Any further ambitions? I’m 50 this month and still love what I do. I’m not done yet and have a lot in the pipeline for the next couple of years so watch this space! Contact Joe here: @Joemillshair @ millsxprimark @theloungesohohair @joeandcosoho

EDUCATION AND TRAINING
Learning from the best The Barber magazine talk to industry professionals for insight into what they can offer start up barbers.
M
ike Taylor has been within the barbering industry for 28 years, 14 of those has been teaching within the industry. He is the owner of 8 barbershops across the South of England and runs two different training companies- The Great British Barbering Academy, which specialises in one day training and Mike Taylor Education, which specialises in long term training. “I have seen that education is a popular route for barbers to want to take and I have a lot of people ask me how and why I got into it. The answer is simple; I needed staff in my barbershop and back in 2004 and it was hard to find well trained barbers.” Adds Mike Taylor. Mike Taylor Education offers a range of courses including a 10-week full time courses, one day a week courses, apprentices, study programs, traineeships etc. Mike Taylor Education specialises in building foundations in barbering and training people from beginners. Mike Taylor Education is based in Poole, Dorset and has students coming from all over the UK and further to attend our courses. “We have many funding options available from private funding to government funding and run the Barbering NVQ Level 1, 2 and 3 courses swell as new Apprenticeship Standards. We also offer fast track NVQ qualifications for those barbers in the industry that have the skills and knowledge required, but not the certificate. The Mike Taylor Education fast track option gives barbers a chance to gain their qualification so they can progress with their career. We are proud to work in partnership with

Basingstoke College of Technology (BCoT) to deliver good quality barbering training in their state-of-the-art training facilities.” Adds Mike. Mike also lays the success down to the educators. His learners are all taught by barbers that work in or manage barbers’ shops, the educators all work in the academy one or two days a week and the rest of their time is spent behind the chair in busy barbershops. “I believe that the atmosphere at the academy makes everyone enjoy their time with us that little bit more. I think a relaxed learning experience is far better to anything else, when people arrive for a day course with me, sometimes I can feel their nerves and anxiousness and I think I need to calm these guys ASAP or they are going to take very little of what I tell them in.” “My second training company, the Great British Barbering Academy came from the back of my time with the British Barbers’ Association.
“Remember barbering is a trade and you cannot perfect that in 200 haircuts, but you can have the basics nailed down if the teaching is done correctly.” When I started the association back in 2010, I got to meet who I would consider some of the best barbering educators around the UK. When I met with Salon Services some years later, Salon Services offered me to do their barbering training and I jumped at the chance.” The Great British Barbering Academy (GBBA) now has 18 educators across the UK we deliver one day training courses including Shave Day, Fades and Blades, Traditional Barbering, Clipper
EDUCATION AND TRAINING and Beard Confidence and Introduction into Barbering. They offer an Educator for a Day course where one of the team comes to your place of work and educates either a group or sometimes a one to one session which is completely bespoke to your training needs. “I am pleased to say that the GBBA team also has perfect feedback with many of the learners booking additional courses after they’ve completed one. This year we started the GBBA College Tour where we visited colleges all over the UK and did a practical workshop and evening presentation, partnered with Salon Services and Styling Products UK. So far, we have visited Basingstoke, Whitney, Weymouth, Poole, Huntingdon and Bridgend colleges. Later this year we are in Northern Ireland and Cheshire so look out for us or book on a GBBA course at www.salon-services.com.” Mike Taylor adds.

Now you can get a haircut, while sipping a whiskey and having a of touch dermal filler all in the same location. In the UK, you can even get your grocery shopping done whilst you have a haircut (Gould Barbershop’s partnerships in Tesco stores). Men are no longer satisfied with a budget short back and sides at a musty old barber. So, Barbershops need to keep up with the times to stay current. Education, Training and expanding the service offer is important, not only for the survival of your brand but also for any business to thrive and stay relevant. Training is vital and not just in the services that you already provide, look at training in social media, SEO for your website, customer service skills, innovative new services, upselling your product lines, marketing and public relations. Make sure you are across the industry trends, look at what is new, what new services can you offer your clients that no one else has. Visit trade shows, conventions and network, network, network! I spend most of my time speaking around the globe in business and Aesthetics and have written articles on everything from hair trends to celebrity hairstyles to hair transplants which have featured in the UK, USA and Australia. EDUCATION AND TRAINING
In the mind of Chris Foster Have you ever thought about the process of building a career that boosts your profile, pushing you to the top of the industry? Have you wondered why some barbers have great personal brands? You follow them on Instagram, you see them traveling the world, sharing their passion and fulfilling their dreams while others are stuck working behind the chair? As a former Director of the British Barbers’ Association I was in contact with so many barbers who were stuck in a rut and they felt that they were not able to express themselves fully with the work they were doing. The whole process can be so overwhelming that most people resort to do nothing - a paralysis of motivation. Even as the founder of The Foss Academy, EPA and as a multi awardwinning barber, expert profile coach and international educator, throughout my career I have experienced similar motivation paralysis. My career started in a small barbershop in Tottenham where I mastered my trade but felt extremely
frustrated because I didn’t know where to go next. I was so busy servicing clients that I had no time to build any kind of legacy. One day a light bulb went off inside my head – for a new way to go about creating and building an iconic industry profile. I had discovered a different approach entirely! “I finally understood the WHY and the HOW of how to be on top of the game.” It was mind blowing! A-List celebrities were flying me around the world to cut their hair with the bonus that I could name my price. The problem is, if no one sees your work and how magnificent you are, you could be left behind the chair wondering what if! They say that content is king. In our world of complete connectivity if you are not searchable you are not relevant. Technology is now having a massive impact on our industry. There has been no time in history where you can cultivate a massive following for free. If you or your business is not creating relevant content, then you need to
start! Content creation is KEY. Are you producing blogs that help your clients achieve a certain result? Are you creating photographic collections, which have been tagged with you or your brand? Are you creating videos for YouTube, the second largest search engine in the world? If the answer is no, then start NOW. A strategy I have used over the years when creating YouTube videos is to put your name in the title section of the video as that will help Google to find you and your content quickly. Make sure all your content is housed on your website. Your website is the most important place on the web, it is the place where people can spend time to get to know you, get to understand your message and how you can help people with the work that you do. Director’s cut The USA MVRCK Barber Team and network of expert groomers answer stylists’ questions about using and recommending MVRCK products.
“How can stylists incorporate MVRCK Shave and Beard products into their shop when they don’t offer shave services?” Trevor Moots @tailorfade “I use Beard Oil in my shop before the backwash. Prior to shampooing, apply some Beard Oil, then cover the face with a warm towel. This helps lay the beard hair down while also controlling and conditioning it.”
Corey Bakon @thecutcoach “Every male client can benefit from Skin Tonic. Spray it before or after a haircut to hydrate the skin and invigorate the senses with the fresh, minty scent. This small add-on can begin a conversation about skin care. You can also use Cooling Aftershave after all haircuts and clipper work to provide guests with a soothing, cooling sensation. Be sure to highlight the benefits of barley seed extract and its ability to help prevent ingrown hairs and razor bumps.”

Seth Davis @seththebarber “Many men haven’t taken the time to learn about hair or grooming products. As professionals, we should be using our knowledge to help and educate our guests. Instead of trying to make a hard sell, I just tell each client what product I’m using, why I’m using it and what it will do for them. At that point, they see the value and it leads to take home sales!”

A close shave for uninsured barbers I Scissors? Check. Clippers? Check. Combs and brushes? Check. Insurance?
f you can’t ‘check’ that last one when you’re getting your kit ready, we shouldn’t need to remind you that you’re not packing everything you need for your day’s work. Without the right cover, you’re not just putting valuable things like your tools, stock and takings at risk. More worryingly, you’re also exposing yourself to potentially eye-watering expenses. Things like court costs and damages you may be liable for if a customer, colleague or member of the public took legal action against you. That’s why specialist Bridge Insurance Brokers Limited has designed an insurance product with all the cover barbers need, in one neat package. It’s called BarberGuard; and as the name suggests, it provides a much-needed level of protection to allow barbers to concentrate on trimming hair without cutting corners. They realise that many people in the trade aren’t properly insured. Not simply because they’re not diligent. Or they’ve not thought about it. But because it can be tricky to get the right cover and that standard policies often don’t cover the unique risks that come with the job. Things like carrying out cut-throat razor shaves and working from multiple locations. They’ve used their 50 years’ experience in specialist business insurance, plus in-depth knowledge of the barbering business, to create one of the best insurance bundles around. INSURANCE
Do YOU have Insurance? With the growth of barbershops in the UK many of these, haven’t given insurance a second thought, we discuss with Insurance companies just how important having insurance is. Direct Line for Business Jemma Holloway, Retail Product Manager at Direct Line for Business talks to The Barber Magazine to highlight the positives of having insurance and why barbers should consider it, for the sake of their Barbershop. Direct Line for Business are a direct insurer for small businesses, with over 500,000 small business customers. They currently offer insurance for over 1,000 different business types from landlords, van owners, tradespeople, office and professionals, retailers, hair and beauty trades as well as bed & breakfast owners. “As a barber you’re dealing with customers every day, which brings risks with it and Public Liability insurance is an important cover to consider. For instance, if a member of the public is injured by you or an employee, or due to your business activities, such as a slip on a wet floor, or their property is damaged, like a stain from a product on their clothes, then they could choose to claim against you, so it’s important to have the right insurance in place.” Says Jemma. Further to this, your profession brings with it its own risk as cutting hair could lead to an injury, or hair dye could trigger a reaction. These are issues barbers should consider before disregarding insurance all together. “Look for Treatment Liability cover, which would typically show as an extension to Public Liability, this would cover injury from treatments you’re providing. Check that the treatments that you offer to your customers are covered by the policy, and let your insurer know if you do other treatments to ensure you’ve got the cover you need. “Jemma adds. The cost of barber equipment is
42 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.CO.UK
always rising and is used every second of the day in a barbershop. Which is why Jemma suggests insuring your barber equipment. “If your equipment were to be stolen or damaged you may not be able to trade, and it could be costly to replace. This also applies if you have a particularly expensive piece of equipment. “Depending on whether you’re a mobile barber or have your own salon, your insurance needs will differ. You may want to insure your kit on the move if you’re mobile, and consider insuring your buildings, or fixtures & fittings like sinks and barber chairs if you rent your property.” Business Interruption cover is a way of covering loss of income if you can’t work, e.g. if your barber shop floods. Without it not only will you have to repair the damage, but you’ll lose money until you can open again. Business interruption cover is there to cover the lost income, or help you set
up elsewhere. Lastly, if you employ anyone, whether permanently or temporarily, make sure you’ve looked at the requirements for Employer’s liability cover, as it’s usually a legal requirement (http://www.hse.gov. uk/pubns/hse40.pdf). Also ensure that you meet requirements for any trainees around supervision. Take time to think through what would affect your business, or how you would cover the costs you might face, whether for an injury or if your property was damaged or stolen. Numerous companies offer insurance online now through a direct website or a price comparison site, there is also the option of calling a call centre to receive a reliable quote. Alternatively, there’s always the traditional broker route. INSURANCE
ABT Insurance Do I really need barber insurance?
D
ave Horton, Director of ABT, explains why taking out the right insurance is a must. Insurance is a must no matter how small or large your business is, barbers and stylists convince themselves it’s a waste of money, an added expense that they can do without. Dave explains how spending a few pounds a year could save you hundreds of thousands in the long run. “As a barber, you are working within a professional field and being paid for your services, regardless of where you work, be that home, barbershop or mobile. Therefore, you are responsible for your clients’ wellbeing whilst you are treating them and whilst they are on your premises or you are working in their home. Furthermore, if you use proprietary products, such as shampoos, colours or grooming or styling products can, in some incidences, cause reactions on some clients, for which you are also responsible. Remember, even if you cause injury to a client or damage to their property accidently, you would still be liable.” Explains Dave. Many barbers put off the idea of insurance because, they believe it takes
44 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.CO.UK
too much time or is too complicated to do. Dave says, that a surprising and concerning number of practicing barbers do not have insurance, leaving them open to personally paying out claims of hundreds of thousands of pounds should the worst happen. “As a barber, you should be covered for Public Liability, such as a client tripping and injuring themselves on your premises, Product Liability, which covers you against reactions to products, and Treatment Risk Liability / Medical Malpractice, which will cover you against clients reporting an injury caused by you whilst you carry out a treatment, such as a haircut, colour or wet shave. “What you may not realise, is that claims can often run into hundreds of thousands of pounds. Regardless of the ethical and moral reasons that you should be insured, from a financial perspective insurance is a must.” He adds.
Choosing the right insurance for you Dave recommends using a company that is a specialist within the hair and barber sectors and really understands
what you do. “It’s also important that you choose the right policy for you. Don’t underestimate the amount of insurance cover you will need. For example, ABT’s Hair policy, which covers barbering services, includes £6 million each of Professional Liability Insurance, Public Liability Insurance, Product Liability Insurance, and Medical Malpractice/ Treatment Risk Insurance for just £47.50 a year. This policy covers you to deliver a range of services, including hair cutting, styling, colouring, the use of clippers and trimmers and other electrical equipment, and wet shaving. What’s more, should you get a complaint made against you, you will have the guidance of an experienced team of industry experts behind you to support and advise you.” Dave Horton is Director of ABT, the industry’s leading membership and insurance provider representing over 18,000 professionals. Don’t cut corners on insurance Insurance is a must have as a business owner which is why it is important to be clued up when finding the appropriate cover.
A
s a busy barbershop owner, finding the time to deal with your admin or insurance needs can be difficult and with a variety of cover options available for you to consider, it can be daunting to know where to start. So, how can your insurance be both cost effective and offer the best protection for your business?
Sweep up the known risks One of the most common claims in the barbering sector is slips and trips due to hazards such as brooms and mops unsuitably placed between clients. These types of claims can come from customers, suppliers or staff members. Employers’ Liability Insurance is a legal requirement if you have any full or part-time employees, or if you use temporary staff, casual workers, volunteers or contractors. But it is designed to cover you in the event of a claim being raised due to illness or injury as a result of working for you. It is a good idea to have Public Liability Insurance, to ensure you are protected against similar claims from your customers or suppliers.
Style it right From a short back and sides to a cut and style, your customer puts their trust in you to do a great job. As part of the service you might offer styling products such as putty and wax, and some barbers also hold stock which can be sold to customers. Stock and contents insurance mean you will be able to restock and continue trading if a loss was to occur; and if you transport them from a wholesaler to your premises, cover for goods in transit can also be a good idea.
46 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.CO.UK
Having the right tools for the job As a barber, you wouldn’t give a cut without the right equipment, and so you wouldn’t take out insurance without the right cover for your needs. Business Interruption is often an underestimated tool to have in your cover and is there to help keep your business afloat in the event of an incident affecting your barbershop such as fire, flood or break-in. It could cover the loss of profits, staff wages or even interim payments to tide you over whilst the damage is being repaired. If you own your premises, you will need buildings cover to protect it as well as protection for your contents, such as tools, equipment, furnishings and so on. If you are operating from home or on a mobile basis, don’t assume that you will be covered by your home insurance. If you have any
doubts as to what is and isn’t covered, always check with your cover provider. When arranging insurance for your business, always check the details carefully so you can be sure you are getting the cover you need. If you are getting multiple quotes, it’s a good idea to compare like with like. There is a wide range of cover providers to choose from, from traditional insurers to organisations such as The Retail Mutual, a member-owned company which is dedicated to providing an alternative form of cover for the barbering community, and which offers specialist cover tailored to your particular needs. For a quote or to find out more about how The Retail Mutual can help to protect your business, call 0333 2121 277 or visit www.theretailmutual.com
BARBERSHOP OF THE MONTH
K Barbers Emporium This month’s Barbershop of the month is with K Barbers- Emporium, we speak to owner Kevin Vorley to learn more about the Barbershop.
T
he Emporium opened its doors in the very first venue in Leigh on Sea Essex in May 2007. The second of the venues opened its doors in Billericay Essex in November 2017. It’s certainly been some journey! The Barbers has a unique and modern theme throughout. “Which was inspired from a traditional background and a will to progress the look making it current, classy, inviting and a cool quality venue to work in, be proud to be connected to, and introduce to the discerning client.” Adds Kevin. The name was meant to exude opulence, an ‘emporium’ was a place of wonder, excellence and collaboration of exiting content. “I wanted to bring together the type of ‘collective barbering team’ under my name/brand back in the day, that I would like to work alongside, almost like a K super team- hence the K Barbers Emporium- my collective of
48 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.CO.UK
amazing up and coming, skilled and progressive barbers. “To emulate my desire to make a big but respectful and positive change to the traditional shop, that we all worked in and visited back in the mid 2000’s before the barbering explosion of late. Its proudly gone from strength to strength ever since, ever changing, and ever redefining the normal expectations of our industry model now for some 13 years. Often imitated never mistaken.” Kevin has worked in traditional salons and barbershops for well over a decade at the time, he was looking to open a business built around a client not a barber. “It was a maverick move and it was to buck the trend and bring myself and the company many business and industry awards and acylation’s, presenting me many opportunities and with an amazing diverse career to date. “It has filled me with much pride and satisfaction and still does to this day as I approach my third decade as a pro barber and proud global educator in this industry.” Kevin serves his clients with top grooming products from hair
creams and waxes, shaving, beards maintenance, face care and hair styling items all at hand to assist them to maintain and reproduce the look attained. “We use and sell all British products now. We proudly stock the full Morgan’s pomade company range, PASHANA, FAB and FRESHHEADS hair tonics, and our very own K PRODUCT range.” Adds Kevin. The décor inside the Barbers its extremely important to getting a brilliant first impression from clients old

and new. Kevin believes the barbers has a friendly feel and makes their clients proud and willing to recommend the barbers to others. “It’s their shop- simple as. We created a warm, welcoming traditionally based materials with a contemporary feel. The Emporium which serves them first, going back to why we opened and named our business. “They love the luxury and detail presented to them; it has longevity. It makes them proud and willing to recommend and refer us constantly to others. The barbers themselves have all they need here, it’s like a ‘work home’ for them, and they look after it, always taking pride in their
surroundings and their work produced.” Kevin trusts that your barbershop should reflect your dreams, personality and the place you want to work in every day. “ It also says a lot about the innovator- quirky is cool, and with feature items in a shop such as our 1963 150GL rare Vespa in a glass reception desk in our Leigh store, and the ‘dissected’ 1970’s VW Beetle reception desk in our Billericay store, they are a ‘eye candy’ to passers-by and clients alike. They make each store very easy to remember and talk about! Always be original!” “Many thousands of people have crossed over the threshold of the Emporium’s over the past 13 years, some memorable characters, some visiting, many have become regulars and they all form part of the journey shared.
“They have been the reason why we love what we do, they appreciate the detail and attention gained and the efforts always made to keep it fresh and relevant to them. I find it humbling that with a career that has allowed me to travel, showcase work and explore other avenues of our barbering business, they always remain constant, loyal, excited and proud in our achievements. Without the client we are all nothing but a name above a door. “ To find out more about Kevin Vorley contact: 01702 478488 or 01277 652272. BARBERS AROUND THE WORLD
Luigi Caterino L
uigi spent 28 years in his father barbershop in Italy, his father taught him the basic skills of barbering and after following his father, he decided to study the industry further at a college in Italy for a total of 5 years. Barbering wasn’t his one and only hobby, he remembers playing football a lot as a child. He would play football outside his dads’ barbershop, as there weren’t many places to play football, unfortunately, this was on pavement so he would have many cuts and bruises. No game was ever finished as his father would always call him into the shop to help shave a client hair or help sweep up the floor. With the drastic rise in social media and the influence this has within the industry, we now have the chance to easily book online to ensure we can get our hair cut at the time we choose. Even in Italy the rise in social media is taking over the ‘traditional’ barbering ways. Luigi on the other hand, prefers the traditional way of simply walking into the barber rather than online booking apps. Luigi: “I don’t like this idea of booking system; I love walking into shops and
50 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.CO.UK
waiting for an appointment. I grew up in a shop where a customer would wait hours for a haircut and have some coffee and have a chat with the customers, because, just like that we have started a new friendship between people. Unlike now, most people who come into the shops immediately go on their phones and barely speak a few words, it’s beginning to get boring.” Now Luigi has decided to take his career further, with the amount of knowledge he has within the industry it would be silly to not pass that knowledge on to students and apprentices. Bluebeard Revenge decided to create a training service to help develop careers and educate those new to the industry. Bluebeard Revenge: “We pride ourselves on providing superior one-day courses to hair and beauty professionals all over the world, in an industry that is always changing, our courses are uniquely developed to enhance skills, improve industry knowledge, and provide continuing professional development (CPD). “ Luigi adds: “I’m the Head educator for the Bluebeards Revenge, I help
educate shaving courses in the UK and across seas, when I won the best barber UK back in 2015, I received this great opportunity to work as an educator for other companies. However, I decided to stay with Bluebeard Revenge. I am very lucky; I get to attend shows and travel all around the world teaching something I really love.” After being in the industry for a while now and understanding changes within the industry, Luigi knows what it’s like for a start-up barber and offers some advice. Luigi says: “Be yourself, attend a Barbering show like salon international or Barber Connect to see the new trend, there is always something to learn, you are never the best in this new generation of haircuts.”

RISING STAR

A new outlook on life
This month’s Rising Star is with Netty Steel who works at Brush Barbers, based in Glasgow. When did you realise you wanted to become a barber? I was inspired by my amazing wife who is also a barber. I’ve always had a huge passion for hair and fashion but I never really knew how much until my wife was coming home from work at night, I would look at pictures of cuts she had done that day, and would have all these ideas on how to make her cuts look their best. Before I knew it, I found myself online watching loads of barbering tutorials every bit of free time I had, it wasn’t until I went along with her to a big barbering event a few years ago, I had my eyes opened to this amazing profession.
Out of all the things the job includes what is your favourite? Hmm that’s a hard one for me, I would say my favourite part is being able to show my creative side, I enjoy doing creative cutting and colouring, having someone look their best and feel great about themselves when they leave the shop whether it be for a big night out, a job interview or a first date. skills are just as important as the cuts.
What is your proudest moment of your career so far? My proudest moment must be getting a position in the brush team as my 10year goal was to be working alongside Husso the barber, I had followed his work from the very beginning of my journey. So, for him to contact me and offer me a place on his team I felt truly blessed to get this opportunity just as I was qualifying. We share a lot of the same ideas and values when it comes to barbering and service, and to top it off he’s an amazing person to learn from. He puts 5 stars into everything that’s carried out in the shop.
What three tips would you offer someone who wanted to join the industry? Stay focused and driven while in college they teach you the basics but oversee your own learning. Cut as much as you can and say yes to every cut, refuse nothing! Watch all the video tutorials you possibly can. Make mistakes you will learn loads from them. Learn to take criticism good and bad it’s the only way you’re going to grow. Always stay humble and true to yourself, never stop learning!
Do you have any future plans you can share? I’m really looking forward to working by Husso’ side to expand and grow the business to its full potential. Great things are planned for brush. Stage work is also on my agenda for the future and I wouldn’t rule out educations. My ultimate dream would be to work backstage for fashion sets and film and tv.
