Discover Madeira’s History

Take a glimpse into the past at the Madeira Historical Society. Located inside a Sears catalogue home, the society draws visitors from around the world with tours of its early 20th-century house, which displays everything from a 1950s television set to an old-fashioned sewing machine. Just 1,500 feet away shines another village gem: railroad tracks previously operated by the Marietta & Cincinnati Rail Road Company, whose former treasurer, John Madeira, is the town’s namesake. —B.H.

During Madeira’s incorporation in 1910, the quaint village was lovingly christened “The Friendly Town.” Over the years, the name stuck—and so did new titles, like 2021’s best place to live in Greater Cincinnati, according to Niche. With a welcoming community and a multitude of living and learning possibilities, Madeira has the people and places for everyone.

Just 12 miles from downtown, Madeira is conveniently located between Kenwood, Silverton, and Indian Hill—but you don’t have to leave the city limits to find what you need. The Central Business District showcases more than 150 shops, from nostalgic mom-and-pops to modern convenience stores. With boutiques, restaurants, and service businesses, the district offers a plethora of options for dining and activity. Meet your neighbors at Madeira’s family-friendly events, including the city-wide Independence Day parade, the year-round Madeira Farmers’ Market, and the annual Girls’ Night Out. Local amenities include three pristine parks, a robust public library, a swim club, and various sporting courts dotted around town.

Both in the heart of the district and beyond, Madeira offers a wonderful variety of living and learning options. Students can earn a robust education and make lifelong friendships in Madeira’s high-ranking public and private schools. Housing options range from family homes along idyllic culde-sacs to condos and apartments in the lively business district. The brand new Overlook development by Eagle Custom Homes offers the best of both worlds, featuring an open floor plan tailored to any lifestyle. And the town continues to develop to meet the growing population—9,000-plus residents with a median income of more than $100,000.

In a tight-knit community like Madeira, you’re destined to find a familiar face at the local store or friendly smile from your neighbor. With the town’s shared sense of community, Madeira also has the flexibility and convenience you need to call the village home.
