Welcome to the fourth issue of the Forest Hills High School Key Club Newsletter! This newsletter includes events that occurred in July, future ideas, New York International/District news, etc. from 2012-2013. This newsletter will inform you all about what the Forest Hills High School Key club is and does. It’s the month of July! It’s finally summer vacation and I hope everyone is enjoying their summer! District Updates "Each year, the District Governor brings into focus a specific category or area of service outreach. This is known as the Governor's Project. This year, Governor Daniel Ivan Lin has designated "Keys to Accessibility" as his Governor's Project. Please read on to learn more about this project and what you can do for it. Message from the Governor Hello New York District Key Clubbers! This is Governor Daniel Ivan Lin and it is with great pleasure that I announce my Governor’s Project for the 2012-2013 service year. The Governor’s Project is a project decided on by the District Governor that focuses on a specific category or area of service outreach. This year’s Governor’s Project is called “Keys to Accessibility,” which aims to serve the elderly and those with disabilities. Key Club is about caring and it is key that as we serve our homes, schools, and communities that we do not neglect those that are important to us. It is for this reason that I chose this as my Governor’s Project and I know that we the Mighty New York District will be able to provide great service to these two groups. Let us bring happiness to the elderly and disabled one smile at a time. More about the Governor's Project “Keys to Accessibility” focuses on serving the elderly and disabled. Though there are no specific guidelines for the project, here are some possible project ideas: organizing a dance for your local senior center, visiting and providing assistance for a home for persons with disabilities, having a biweekly club visit at an elderly home and providing services such as reading newspapers, storytelling for the visually impaired, holding a sports competition for the disabled, and much more. You can even write letters advocating for more wheelchair accessible ramps or funding for a local elderly home. As you can see there are many ways to help the elderly and disabled. Please feel free to be creative with this service projects and explore the possibilities. More resources including information and service project ideas involving the 2012-2013 Governor’s Project, “Keys to Accessibility” will soon be available on our district website, www.nydkc.org Why the Elderly and Disabled? The elderly and disabled are an important component of our society and it is often not the easiest for these two groups as they are often met with discrimination by others. That is why it is our job to provide the help and attention needed for the elderly and disabled, so that they can live happier lives knowing that there are people that care and acknowledge them. We as Key Clubbers must set an example for others to follow and it is important that we take the step to reach out to these two groups. I hope that this year’s Governor’s Project will help provide an incentive for Key Clubbers to further serve the elderly and disabled in their homes, schools, and communities.

Club News! Have fun on your summer vacation! We did the ice skating event with the division! It was really fun getting to know everyone from the division. We listed additional roles for key club members in case they want to have more responsibility in key club and want to have extra service hours. We want to provide everyone as many opportunities to get hours as much as we can so everyone completes their requirement!
President’s Message Hey everyone, Finally, it's summer! I hope everyone is enjoying their summer vacation! Unfortunately, I am taking summer school this month, so I cannot attend and plan events for this month. If there are any events, we will be sure to update you guys! Again, my name is Sonam Sherpa and I am your President for 2012-2013 term! Enjoy!
Ice Skating Event By Sonam Sherpa Service is a great way to give back to your community, and Key Club gives us an ample amount of opportunities to give service to our home, school, and community. However, continuous providence of service is sometimes tedious and tiring, so resting once in a while is good as well. Therefore, over the summer, we held an IceSkating Event to reward ourselves from our dedication and endless effort to help our community. Additionally, getting together as a division, we were able to meet many new people from other clubs throughout NYC, and make friends with them. This social event was not only intended for the purpose of resting and socializing, but was also planned to raise funds for Eliminate Project “UNICEF.” Key Club (Kiwanis) joins the force with UNICEF to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus, which steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year worldwide. Plus, the effects of the disease are excruciating – tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. No one should go through that pain, so Key Club (Kiwanis) has been raising funds to the Eliminate Project that provides the mothers and their babies with vaccination to prevent the disease. Who would have realized that by participating in the ice-skating event, we would be contributing an enormous amount of help making an international impact on the lives of many? There are several other fun ways to help our community as well. On personal level, this event was a fun and resourceful event as I learned how to ice-skate as well as learned more about how we can provide services through mere fun activities. I look forward to our next Ice-Skating event planned in December.
My Love for Key Club As a Member By Cindy Win I was always interested in doing extra-curricular activities but I didn’t know which ones to join. I already volunteered at a clinic so I didn’t feel the need to join key club but once I saw how many people were dedicated into collecting money for UNICEF, I thought I should join key club too! I joined a few extra-curricular activities but I never enjoyed them as much as I enjoyed key club. Key clubbers were always really amiable and made me feel welcomed in the club meetings and events. I didn’t feel like I had a presence in other clubs as much I did in key club. I was really involved in key club and I enjoyed being part of key club. I enjoyed helping people and the community. I really liked going to walks and raising money for those in need. Even though some people thought divisional meetings were boring, I thought they were interesting. I learned a lot about how key club worked as a divisional and district level. Key club isn’t just at the club level. There are many different levels of key club like the club level, divisional level, district level, and international level. I never knew that key club was so spread out in the world and I never knew that there were people even out of high school in the key club organization. After going to the divisional meetings, I realized how much work was put into making key club the organization it is today. I wondered if there was a possibility if I could one day be a leader in key club. I really wanted more people to know about key club and I wanted to run it to make it the best it could be. I wanted to plan the events and voice my opinion on the decisions made in key club. It scared me how much responsibility it was for me to run key club. There would be so many people depending on me to do well in the club. I also noticed how much work the officers put to make key club run smoothly. For now, I’ll continue to do the best in key club and enjoy my time in it!
Additional Roles (Keep in mind that this will be official in September) Person writing the articles -Articles are very important because they contain all of the details about each event and they show what our club has accomplished. This is why I, Cindy Win, have decided to start making a newsletter this year. They capture memories of what happened in events. -For every event, there will be a chance for one person to write about the event for our newsletter. Each article will only give on hour of community service unless the person shows exceptional effort on the article. This is the rubric for the articles: -size 14 central gothic font -1 page long -one paragraph(8 sentences or more) on the organization or disease from the event(can't plagiarize from websites because this will be published and read by many people in key club and outside of key club) -one or more paragraphs on your experience/positive impact of the event and details of what we did during the events -include the date of the event Note: You must write at least one article to be eligible to run for editor for the next term! You cannot write for your college application that you are the journalist because you will temporarily be the person writing the article for the particular event. This is not a position in our key club.
Person taking photos during events -During events, we need people to take pictures because pictures also capture our memories. Pictures make newsletters more interesting and bring back memories of what occurred in events. -Each person who decides to take pictures will earn 30 minutes of community service. This person has to include various pictures of everyone or almost everyone in the club who attended the event and the scenery of the event. We will not accept inappropriate pictures and these pictures should contain people doing their community service work. -Note: This is not an officer position and you cannot write on your college applications that you are the photographer of the club because you are only the temporary photographer for the particular event.
