Key Club Updates Club News! As usual, our club is connected with the division and did the divisional events! We did the soap derby, dog run, and DTC for the month of June! Doing key club events at the end of the school year is a great way to have fun! We are also doing committees like the division is so stay tune for the next newsletter for more information about committees!

Divisional Updates Divisional Training Conference June 23th, Saturday at 9 Our Divisional Training Conference was a very huge event. It had two divisions (Division 8 & 8A). Many of the clubs came and attend the workshops which were hosted by District board and many Lieutenant Governors from other Divisions! We charged people 8 dollars and they had to be in business professional attire. It started at 9 and ended at 4, with many people running around deciding which workshop to go to. After 2 sessions we ordered pizza for everyone as well as soda. We then ended off showing a slideshow of all the past events the two divisions had went to.

Dog Run June 10th, Sunday at 12 The Dog Run, was a great achievement for us as a Division. We had two tasks. One was to scrape off the old paint and apply new ones and the other was to cut down old branches and clean the park up. We had a great amount fun being around friends and helping the community! We were able to bring a lot of members this time than just officers! This was a very successful event and we came together much stronger as a division Divisional Committee List (7:04) The Divisional Committee list was distributed to the Division. The Committee list, encompasses the designation of which where the officers in division are placed. Other members who applied early also made the list. This list by no means is a final copy of who can be on a Divisional Committee. Key Clubbers of Division 8-A are encouraged to join a committee, that fields to their strengths.

Key Club Updates District Updates These are some district projects! Alzheimer's Association The Alzheimer's Association is the leading, global voluntary health organization in Alzheimer's care and support, and the largest private, nonprofit funder of Alzheimer's research. Currently there are more than 5 million people with Alzheimer’s disease in the United States and 35 million worldwide. These numbers are expected to skyrocket to as many as 16 million and 115 million people respectively by midcentury. The potential of earlier diagnosis and the development of better treatments may significantly change the experience of Alzheimer’s for millions of people. In the meantime, the cost of care will rise exponentially for society. These factors will provide unprecedented challenges and opportunities to the Association over the coming years. This district project can be viewed as the fundraising counterpart to this year's Governor's Project, "Keys to Accessibility". Website: http://www.alz.org/ Address: 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, Illinois 60601-7633 Doctors Without Borders One of our past district projects, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international medical humanitarian organization created by doctors and journalists in France in 1971.Today, MSF provides independent, impartial assistance in more than 60 countries to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe, primarily due to armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, exclusion from health care, or natural disasters. MSF provides independent, impartial assistance to those most in need. MSF also reserves the right to speak out to bring attention to neglected crises, challenge inadequacies or abuse of the aid system, and to advocate for improved medical treatments and protocols. The Eliminate Project With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light, sound, and touch and die in approximately one week. MNT is highly preventable. A simple $1.80 can provide three doses of a 60-cent immunization to protect a mother and her future children. Together, Kiwanis and UNICEF can stop this disease and will immunize 129 millionmothers and their future babies. This requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage facilities, transportation, thousands of skilled staff, and much more. Together as a Kiwanis family and with UNICEF, we hope to raise a total of 110 million US dollars for The Eliminate Project by 2015, which will also be the 100th anniversary of Kiwanis International. Together we can eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus from the face of the earth. Website: http://theeliminateproject.org/ Address: 3636 Woodview Trace, Indianapolis, Indiana 46268

INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION: DAY 1 IN REVIEW Friday, July 06, 2012

by: Maha Aziz Key Club International Convention (ICON) has been a wonderful experience so far! Today we had our opening session with speaker Eden Sher, who plays a character on the TV show "The Middle." She gave an inspirational speech on believing in oneself and never giving up on your dream. Next, clubbers were allowed to eat lunch either in Downtown Disney or in the hotel. Promptly at 2:00 p.m., caucusing for the new international board candidates began. Though it was four hours long, it was enjoyable and went by quickly. Afterwards, clubbers ate dinner, swam, went to Downtown Disney, and did other things. From 9:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., clubbers danced for The Eliminate Project and raised money to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus from the face of the Earth, a disease which still takes the life of one baby every 9 minutes. Through some creative fundraising at the dance, we raised US $538.00 through the "MNT Minutes" that were held throughout the dance, where clubbers donated as much spare change as they could in one minute. Some clubbers also created a new dance move called the "Eliminate" move. We were disappointed when the dance was over. The first day of ICON was a rewarding experience and we are all looking forward to tomorrow! Key Club is simply the best organization in the world! Source: keyclub.org

The Dog Run BY alliya shafi

Joining key club is a lot more than participating in events only to receive service credits; it’s a learning experience that I will carry out through my life and it’s a way to help others while having a great time with friends. During a recent Key Club event I have attended, the Dog Run, my fellow key clubbers and I aided the staff of a dog park, where we helped clean and paint the railings of the dog park located in Forest Park. We scrapped off the old paint from the railings and gave it a fresh new black paint coat. Inside the actual dog park, we cut down the overgrown grass and picked up the excessive pebbles on the area in which the dogs run. This would avoid any injury to the dog when they run wild playing with one another. With the interaction of the key club members, we felt as if the work we did were not work at all. We enjoyed each other’s company as we painted and sang along to songs. The most memorable moment I would have to say I experienced during this event was the encounter of the numerous dogs that were there. Firstly, I thought the dog run park would be close for the day since the park was occupied by our cleaning, but several dog owners and their dogs decided to come out for a fun day in the dog run park. But that was not a very fun day for me because I am petrified of dogs. I remember talking to my friend and then suddenly I glanced behind me and saw there was dog coming my way. I immediately jetted up the stairs and ran as far away as I could from the dog. Other than that terrifying encounter which I will never forget, I enjoyed mostly spending the day with my friends and my mother who also attended the event; I honestly enjoyed giving back in any little way I can to my community. Also, everyone was from different schools, so it was very interesting to interact and meet new key club members in the same division as myself. After the work was done, we all gathered to take a group picture of our division members who participated in this event.

DTC (Divisional Training Conference) On June 23, 2012, we had our annual Divisional Training Conference, a leadership training program for both club officers and members! Even though the program had so many beneficial workshops for us, it only cost us $8 (which is a good thing for us, since we didn’t have to pay that much.) There were so many workshops being held at the program but unfortunately, only three officers were able to attend the event, so we weren’t able to attend every single workshop. Hopefully, everyone will attend the Fall Rally and help us get as much information from all the workshops. Nonetheless, the workshops that we attended gave us much valuable information! Our club officers and I received many ideas from past and present leaders of Key Club. Some of the information include how to run our club successfully, what our duties as officers and members were, how to be a successful leader, how to interact with members, and etc. I am really grateful for our Division for hosting the DTC, mainly because this event helped me build a better relationship with Stephen Mnere (club Secretary) and Cindy Win (Club Editor). This event made us closer than before. Like any other events, we had ample opportunity to make new friends because not only did our high school attend the event, but also 10 other high schools attended! Besides new people, there was food too!! There are many reasons to love this event! So many important information gained, new friends made, relationship built, foods, and various stuffs were available for only $8! How cool is that? I hope everyone attends this event next year! By Sonam Sherpa

Committee System Another new policy that new Executive Board has brought this year is the “Committee System. We will be doing the Committee System starting this year.

Why are we creating a Committee System?? - To create more Leadership position for the members! - To make our club more organized! -To compete against other club in LTC!

Members are not required, but it is recommended to join at least one committee! (Join the one that interests you!) But why should you join the Committee? - Did you know that Committee Chairs and Committee Members are recognized as leaders? So, it holds more value in college application than just being a member!

We are creating 5 committees in our club this year and you can join any of them. All of these committees have their own goals to complete. Committee Chair for each committee will be determined through the Membership Recruitment Competition. More information will be released in future newsletter!
