welcome Welcome to the 25th Award Winning Cinemagic Film and Television Festival for Young People. 2014 has been a hugely successful year for Cinemagic and for all the thousands of young people who have participated in workshops, screenings, film making projects and outreach activities in Belfast, Dublin, London, New York and Los Angeles.
Good luck to the ‘CineSeeker’ juries who will have lots of fun judging the films in competition & well done to all the young directors who have submitted films to Young Filmmaker 2014.
In March we were delighted to welcome our patron Lord Julian Fellowes to Belfast to announce plans for the Cinemagic production of Northern Ireland’s first Christmas feature film for young people The Christmas Star! The support for the project has been overwhelming from both the film industry and the general public with thousands of young people auditioning for the film’s lead cast. Production will begin in the Autumn and we are looking forward to presenting the young cast at the closing night of the Junior Festival on 17th October!
I would like to say a big thank you to all the hard working and committed staff at Cinemagic who have been so dedicated and enthusiastic. Thank you also to the Cinemagic Board for all their guidance and support. To all our patrons who are so kind and give so much - you are simply amazing!
Cinemagic is a festival for young people, designed by young people. As you can see this is reflected in the 2014 programme which includes a very exciting line up of events including special premieres, international film previews, education screenings, family workshops, Junor Talent Lab and of course films made by young people.
I look forward to seeing you all at the festival!
Thank you to our funders and sponsors who continue to support us.
To you our audience, thank you for supporting and being part of what is now the largest Children’s Film and Television Festival for Young People in the UK and Ireland.

Continuing the success of the Cinemagic Young Consultants from previous years let us introduce you to the class of 2014. “Hi we’re the Young Consultants and we all met up in August at the Crescent Arts Centre Belfast to help Cinemagic choose this year’s festival films. We did everything from deciding on programme design, came up with ideas for radio ads, wrote film reviews and most importantly decided what films should be selected for the festival. The films we have selected are all fantastic and we promise there is something for everyone. From exclusive previews and family favourites, to films from all over the world we hope Cinemagic 2014 provides you with as much enjoyment as we had from being Young Consultants”.
The Boxtrolls is a comedic fable that unfolds in Cheesebridge, a posh Victorian-era town obsessed with wealth, class and the stinkiest of fine cheeses. Beneath its charming cobblestone streets dwell the Boxtrolls, foul monsters who crawl out of the sewers at night and steal what the townspeople hold most dear: their children and their cheeses. At least that’s the legend residents have always believed. In truth, the Boxtrolls are an underground cavern-dwelling community of quirky and lovable oddballs who wear recycled cardboard boxes the way turtles wear their shells. The Boxtrolls have raised an orphaned human boy, Eggs since infancy as one of their dumpster-diving and mechanical junk-collecting own. When the Boxtrolls are targeted by a villainous pest exterminator Archibald Snatcher who is bent on eradicating them as his ticket to Cheesebridge society, the kind-hearted band of tinkerers must turn to their adopted charge and an adventurous rich girl Winnie to bridge two worlds amidst the winds of change – and cheese.
See you in October!

The benefits of young people watching international films is huge! We believe engaging in a programme of
world cinema can increase learning and understanding of different cultures, helping to promote an environment of tolerance and acceptance. Exposure to subtitled movies from a young age can also improve traditional literary skills as well as developing film literacy and a deep understanding of cinema that will last long into adulthood! Here’s what the Young Consultants think….
“I really like subtitled films because I get to see films I would not usually see in my local cinema”. “I like subtitled films because they allow me to see the styles of film that other countries enjoy as well as experiencing different cultures”. “Foreign movies are good to watch because they can help with learning different languages”.

FIDDLESTICKS + DIRECTOR Q&A WITH VEIT Helmer
Film Classification Workshop with BBFC
The director of Fiddlesticks Veit Helmer will introduce the screening and take part in a schools Q&A after the screening.
Every movie that gets released in the UK has to go through one final process before it hits the cinemas – classification. It’s the job of the British Board of film Classification (BBFC) to view them all and decide on a suitable classification or rating: U, PG, 12A or higher. What a job! This is a great opportunity for youngsters to get the lowdown on how it’s all done and meet some of the people who do the job for real. The workshop will feature plenty of interactivity and the feature case study will be centred on the fantasy children’s adventure Earth to Echo (Cert: PG)!
www.cbbfc.co.uk
The first part of this workshop is an interactive presentation that explains and shows a variety of storyboards used in traditional and digital animation, covering television series, commercials and feature films. This will be followed by a session on how to begin visualising a script and telling the story using the camera, characters and locations. You will then get the opportunity to draw your own storyboard under expert guidance, using a script and designs that will be supplied.
Mon 6 Oct 10.30am – 1.00pm Participating School Suitable for 6 – 11 year olds £3.00 per pupil
Fiddlesticks takes place in a small, ordinary town somewhere in Europe, a place that is so mediocre that it has become the stronghold for all kinds of market research! The consequence of this is that old people are put in nursing homes in order to keep down the average age of the inhabitants. However, the town’s children don’t want to be used as guinea pigs anymore and decide to take action... THAT’S CLASSIFIED! EARTH TO ECHO WITH THE BBFC
Every movie that gets released in the UK has to go through one final process before it hits the cinemas – classification. It’s the job of the British Board of film Classification (BBFC) to view them all and decide on a suitable classification or rating: U, PG, 12A or higher. What a job! This is a great Mon 6 Oct opportunity for youngsters to get the lowdown on how it’s all 10.30am – 1.00pm done and meet some of the people who do the job for real. ODEON Cinemas, Film case study Earth to Echo (Cert: PG). Belfast
INTRODUCTION TO WORLD CINEMA FIDDLESTICKS + DIRECTOR Q&A
Fiddlesticks takes place in a small, ordinary town somewhere in Europe, a place that is so mediocre that it has become the stronghold for all kinds of market research! The consequence of this is that old people are put in nursing homes in order to keep down the average age of the Mon 6 Oct inhabitants. However, the town’s children don’t want to be 10.30am – 1.00pm used as guinea pigs anymore and decide to take action...The ODEON Cinemas, film will be followed by a Q&A with Fiddlesticks director Veit Belfast Helmer.

We are delighted to embark on this ground breaking project and to have the support of many film and television professionals who will mentor the young crew from script to screen and begin film production in Northern Ireland this autumn!

In June 2014 Cinemagic and Hubbard Casting held open auditions in Ballymena, Belfast and Newry in a bid to find the young cast. Over the course of 3 days the assessors auditioned thousands of young hopefuls from all over Ireland and the UK, all of whom were eager to get their big break! Over the summer the Cinemagic audition panel reviewed tapes and held call backs and we are delighted to present our final young cast at the Cinemagic Under 12s’ Festival Closing Night on Friday 17th October before the closing night film preview!
