Meet the Team

Cinemagic is extremely proud to have a number of dedicated patrons who continue to support and champion our work around the world.

Welcome to the Cinemagic Film and Television Festival for Young People in Association with Hagan Homes. We have programmed another action packed festival full of fantastic film screenings including special premieres, international feature films, documentaries, shorts, foreign language films and education screenings. Throughout the festival Cinemagic will also be offering young people the opportunity to take part in practical events including industry workshops, exciting masterclasses, Young Filmmaker and our extensive film education programme for schools. Without doubt a huge big thank you has to go to the Cinemagic Young Consultants who worked tirelessly over the summer months to help us shape and devise the 2018 festival line-up. We had over 100 young programmers this year and their dedication and hard work has resulted in a programme to be proud of. 2018 has been an extremely busy year for Cinemagic as we provided lots of new opportunities for our audience to enjoy film viewing and filmmaking in Belfast, Dublin, London, Castres, New York and Los Angeles. We are returning to the USA at the end of the year with further film events in New York, Boston and Nashville and plans for 2019 are well underway with Cinemagic LA returning in March and then it’s countdown to our 30th Anniversary Festival in Belfast next October.

This Autumn will see the release of Cinemagic’s second feature film Grace and Goliath. In June 2017, 48 young filmmakers from Northern Ireland, Ireland and the USA trained alongside professional filmmakers led by director Tony Mitchell to create something truly special. This major film initiative gave all the young trainees involved a chance to earn their first feature film credit as well as building their confidence, self-esteem and helping them to develop new creative skills. Grace and Goliath will be in cinemas in October and we are extremely excited to open this year’s Cinemagic Belfast Festival with the World Premiere. Thank you to all of our funders, sponsors and partners who continue to support Cinemagic and enable us to offer unique creative opportunities for young people from all backgrounds and communities. I would like to say a big thank you to the Cinemagic staff and volunteers who are so dedicated and hardworking. Thank you also to the Cinemagic Board for all their guidance and support throughout the year. To all of our patrons who share their knowledge and time with us, thank you so much. To you our audience, a huge thank you for all of your support and enthusiasm. I look forward to seeing you at the festival. Joan Burney Keatings MBE Chief Executive, Cinemagic

Young Consultants A film festival for Young People, designed by Young People.

Continuing the success of the Cinemagic Young Consultants from previous years let us introduce you to the class of 2018. Hello, we’re the 2018 Young Consultants and we all met up in July to help Cinemagic programme a selection of this year’s festival films. We watched a series of short films and feature films from around the world, reviewed and critiqued them and most importantly decided what films should be selected for the festival. We guarantee there is something to suit everyone’s taste - from exclusive previews, world cinema and family favourites, there is a feast of film to enjoy.

My son absolutely loves Cinemagic. He has been going to the young consultants every summer for years and it is something he really looks forward to. It offers him the opportunity to experience other cultures through the variety of films, hone his analytical skills and develop his critical writing technique. Cinemagic brings together children from different backgrounds and schools in a really fun and engaging way. It is great to see the kids learn so much in such a fun, enjoyable environment, my son wouldn’t miss it! Emma Reilly

Young Consultants 12-14 Jackson, Orlagh, Flavia, Maeve, Madeleine, Orlaith, Rhys, Ben, Kristian, Cormac, Mark, Ronan, Jonathan, Rory, Erin, Isabella, Caoimhe.

This is one of the best events running in Belfast in our opinion, mine and my children. It is very well organised and incredibly well run. The children’s needs are well taken care of when you aren’t present. For us it was the first time our girls had watched any films away from mainstream blockbuster cinema. It allowed them to explore greater and wider themes and to experience movies that were made in different countries. They watched films with subtitles and those without words at all. This experience changes the way they want to tell stories. I would recommend it to anyone. Rhonda Lusty

Mark Kermode: How Does it Feel? Book Tour Sun 21 Oct 6.30pm Queen’s Film Theatre Standard Ticket Price £20 Book Bundle Ticket Price £35 (Event £20 & Book £15)

How Does It Feel? - A Life of Musical Misadventures Mark Kermode recounts his utterly foolhardy attempts to fulfil his dreams of becoming a pop star - from building an electric guitar from scratch while at school, to playing tea-chest bass on the kids TV show Utterly Brilliant, to becoming the musical director of a major TV show - all without ever learning to read music. This will be a hilarious evening in which the film critic recalls falling in love with Slade as a teenager, forming his first proper band, and recording an album at Sun Studio as an ageing old ted. Mark will be signing copies of his book after the show. Event duration includes a 20 minute intermission. Total Running Time: 1hr 50mins (excluding book signing). This event is part of the Cinemagic Film Festival and QFT50.

Mark will be delving into what he sees as the current new “Golden Age” of animation, sharing his thoughts on the year’s new film releases and talking about the importance of independent and cultural cinema as QFT celebrates its 50th anniversary, all before answering questions from the audience! The Breadwinner Based on Deborah Ellis’ award-winning novel, director Nora Twomey’s The Breadwinner tells the story of Parvana, an 11-year-old girl growing up under the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2001. When her father is wrongfully arrested, Parvana disguises herself as a boy in order to support her family. With dauntless perseverance, Parvana draws strength from the stories her father told her, and ultimately risks her life to discover if he is still alive. I would like to affirm the value of Cinemagic film screenings, masterclasses and film education programmes to Moving Image Arts (MIA) candidates across all three levels of the subject, at GCSE, AS and A2. The Cinemagic Festival gives students a unique opportunity to view a range of films that are directly relevant to the specifications’ content and learning outcomes of MIA including strong illustrative examples of genre-specific, realist and expressionist films. In instances where a speaker or workshop is also included in the event, it can be of even more benefit, as time is taken after the screening itself to discuss and analyse film language and structure with the student audience. This is relevant to the online examination unit. It is a testament to the value of Cinemagic that so many teachers bring their students to the festival each year. CCEA Officer for Moving Image Arts

At the Industry Trust for IP Awareness they believe when you learn about all of the hard work (graft) that goes into the creation of a film - you get more of a handle on why it’s not yours to take for free. Plus you can better understand why the real life people who invested their time, skills and money in making the film deserve to get paid for their work. When we all understand the importance of supporting the film industry and paying for the films we watch then there will be more films made to enjoy in the future.

Simon Watt is President for life of the Ugly Animal Preservation Society - The society that celebrates and explores the incredible biology of the Animal Kingdom’s most monstrous!!!

To celebrate the hard work that goes into every aspect of the film industry in Ireland, we have invited Walt Disney Studios, Ireland Head of Sales, Martin O’Grady to tell you about his job, the jobs along the way and why he loves all movies, not just Disney ones. £5.00 per student The UK Prime Minister Harold Macmillan might have said in 1957 that most of the British public had never had it so good, but along came a film movement in the late fifties and early sixties, ‘Kitchen Sink Realism’, that happened to think otherwise. The characters in these films tended to be angry young men (and occasionally women) who wanted a better life. Set mainly in the north of England, the films gave a voice to the usually silent, called into question class assumptions and created a new generation of directors and stars in films including Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, Look Back in Anger, Room at the Top and A Kind of Loving.

The screenings provide the opportunity for students and teachers from across Northern Ireland to watch the best films produced by MIA students. CCEA’s Moving Image Arts is a dynamic GCSE and A-Level subject designed to provide students with the opportunity to explore and develop their creative potential and digital literacy through the production of their own films and animations. Cinemagic USA “I’ve seen up close what Cinemagic offers young people – real skills, opportunity, and affirmation – and it is priceless. The entire organisation embraces the magic of film, television and digital technologies, working tirelessly to educate, motivate and inspire young people through film screenings, industry workshops, practical masterclasses, filmmaking projects and outreach activities. Cinemagic breaks down boundaries, promotes inclusion, and introduces young people to other cultures, languages and traditions.” Ryan Rowe Cinemagic Board Member, USA

The young people also took part in a series of masterclasses led by industry leaders including Ross King MBE, director James Foley, awardwinning producer Francis O’Toole, American actor Robert Picardo and Lance O’Connor, Executive Producer and CEO of Minted Content. 20-year-old Niamh McLaughlin from Cookstown, one of the Cinemagic ambassadors, said “From day one our schedule was jam-packed but I wouldn’t have had it any other way. Each day we had industry professionals giving masterclasses all across Los Angeles and each one welcomed our questions with positivity, opportunity and gratitude. For me, Cinemagic has completely broken down the looming barriers that stop young people transitioning from education into the working world. Something that I took away from the experience is that positivity and passion will take you far in life, regardless of what you do.“ The young people from Northern Ireland and Los Angeles also collaborated on a unique project to produce a piece of musical theatre. They performed and showcased this to an audience of over 350 film and music industry executives at the annual Cinemagic Los Angeles Showcase event in the Fairmont Miramar Hotel and Bungalows, Santa Monica, Los Angeles. The gala event to celebrate young filmmaking talent was hosted by Ross King MBE. It included a special preview screening of Cinemagic’s new short film Sasha of the Sea. Audiences also had a sneak preview screening of a behind the scenes short film documentary linked to Cinemagic’s second feature film, Grace and Goliath. Entitled Trainee Filmmakers, the short film recently won a platinum award at the World Documentary Awards in Bali.

A group of young Cinemagic ambassadors from Northern Ireland travelled to Los Angeles to take part in the Cinemagic LA Festival in March 2018.

Amongst the guests were Jennifer Morrison (Once Upon A Time), Ed Begley JR. (Actor), Karina Smirnoff

(Dancing With The Stars), Caroline Morahan (Once Upon A Time), Kelley Jakle (Pitch Perfect), Erin Cahill (Power Rangers), Shelly Bhalla (Jane The Virgin), David Del Rio (In The Heights), Kevin Ryan (Jessica Jones), Sammi Rotibi (MARS), Russ Kane (Eye in the Sky), Adam Croasdell (CW’s Reign), Blake Cooper Griffin (Preacher), Dylan Trussell & David Dinetz (Airplane Mode), Katie Wallace (The Jacket), Caroline Morahan (Once Upon A Time), McKaley Miller (Hart of Dixie), Ryan McCarten (Liv and Maddie) and Briana Evigan (Step Up). Another festival highlight was the private industry screening event of Cinemagic’s new film Grace and Goliath. Adrian Fulle, Executive Producer, Variety said: “For me, ‘Grace and Goliath’ is one of those gems I never expected to find during my lifelong search for great stories. As a filmgoer and storyteller, I love everything about this movie; its writing is top notch, the performances were outstanding and it has such a strong heart that it’s impossible to not love it. As a dad, it gave my daughter and I a very memorable experience we could bond over, and that was probably the most important thing for me.” The Cinemagic Los Angeles Festival 2018 was a great success and we are already making plans and programming exciting film events for next year. Joan Burney Keatings MBE, Cinemagic Chief Executive, discusses: “The Cinemagic Festival in LA this year was really incredible. Not only did we see how much each of the young people from Northern Ireland and Los Angeles developed in confidence and made invaluable industry contacts and friendships but it has also been overwhelming to see the increased industry support and recognition that Cinemagic has achieved. We are thrilled with the excitement and positive feedback for our new short film ‘Sasha of the Sea’ and our latest feature film ‘Grace and Goliath’. Filmmaking requires a collaborative approach. The partnership that we have managed to establish between LA and Belfast is really paying dividends for the young people from both locations. They are being provided with fantastic opportunities that they never imagined they could access.” Cinemagic will return to Los Angeles from 14-22 March 2019. For more information please email shauna@cinemagic.org.uk

Cinemagic USA

The aspiring local filmmakers were joined by young students from LA based schools Hamilton High School, New Roads High School and Jordan High School for this once in a lifetime experience. The exciting, jam-packed programme included masterclasses, studio tours, screenings, presentations and film camps where the young people interacted with representatives from the world’s biggest film and television studios. These included FOX, HBO, Sony, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, CBS, Warner Bros., New York Film Academy, Jim Henson Company and Remote Control Studios.

New York Cinemagic’s second feature film Grace and Goliath received a fantastic reaction at a private screening for New Yorkbased industry representatives at HBO in March 2018. The screening was part of Cinemagic’s annual Film Festival in New York. Joan Burney Keatings MBE, Cinemagic Chief Executive, discusses: “The Cinemagic New York Festival was a great success and it was fantastic to screen our new film in HBO. It was overwhelming to see the increased industry support and recognition that Cinemagic has achieved. We are thrilled with the excitement and positive feedback for our latest feature film ‘Grace and Goliath’.” Alison Metcalfe, Tourism Ireland Executive Vice President, USA and Canada explains why Tourism Ireland, which is responsible for marketing the island of Ireland overseas as a must see vacation destination, supports Cinemagic:

Cinemagic USA

“Tourism Ireland is delighted to support Cinemagic and the great work it does in providing a platform for young people in Film and Television. Northern Ireland is at the forefront of TV production at the moment, with HBO’s hit show ‘Game of Thrones’ bringing thousands of folks to visit. We hope that a film like ‘Grace and

88

Goliath’ again raises the profile of Northern Ireland internationally and whets appetites, encouraging vacationers to come and experience the great culture and attractions first hand.” Discussing the New York screening event Andrea Haughian, Vice President Business Development (New York), Invest NI adds: “What a privilege to attend the New York screening of ‘Grace and Goliath’. Such a wonderfully touching, inspirational and funny movie which showcases the best of Northern Ireland. I applaud Cinemagic’s mission and the life-changing experience it offers young people on both sides of the Atlantic.” Cinemagic will be returning to the East Coast of America in the winter for a further programme of special screening events: New York City November 2018 Boston December 2018 Nashville December 2018
