Welcome We are extremely proud to present the 2015 Cinemagic International Film and Television Festival for Young People. 2015 has been an action-packed and successful year for Cinemagic and for all the thousands of young people who have participated in festival activities, film projects, educational programmes and outreach events. The festival will present the very best in world cinema for young people, jam packed with film education workshops, international film previews and our Young Filmmaker Competition. Highlights include Talent Lab masterclasses, filmmaking workshops and the CineFocus film juries. We are especially looking forward to the World Premiere of ‘A Christmas Star’, our very own feature production and Northern Ireland and Ireland’s first children’s Christmas film. Over 5,000 young people auditioned for the main cast roles which gave young people, from different cultural backgrounds, the chance to star in a film supported by many artists from the world of film and television including Liam Neeson, Pierce Brosnan, Robert James Collier, Bronagh Waugh, Richard Clements and Suranne Jones. Forty
young trainee crew members were also mentored by industry professionals who skilled them in all the aspects of filmmaking. Previews of the film have included a special industry screening at Cannes Film Festival. The US premiere will take place in the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre in LA this December! Thank you to all of our funders and sponsors who continue to support Cinemagic and enable us to offer unique creative opportunities for young people. I would like to say a big thank you to the Cinemagic staff and volunteers who are so dedicated and hardworking. Thank you also to the Cinemagic Board for all their guidance and support. To all of our patrons who share their knowledge and experience with us, thank you so much. To you our audience, a huge thank you for all of your support and enthusiasm. I look forward to seeing you at the festival! Joan Burney Keatings MBE Chief Executive, Cinemagic

Cinemagic is a fantastic organisation and I encourage young people, schools, youth groups and families to get involved in the 2015 Cinemagic Festival this Autumn.
young filmmakers. Their ambitious feature film project, A Christmas Star, has provided numerous young people with their first role on a feature film providing invaluable experience.
Cinemagic provides opportunities for people from all backgrounds to engage with the creative industries. Cinemagic not only inspires and motivates, the organisation is responsible for helping to develop the skills and talents of many
I wish Cinemagic and everyone involved every success with this year’s Festival.
I am delighted once again to welcome the Cinemagic International Film and Television Festival for Young People to Belfast. Cinemagic is an award winning festival that embraces the magic of film, television and digital technologies to educate, motivate and inspire young people through film screenings, industry workshops, practical masterclasses, filmmaking projects and outreach activities. They currently deliver festival programmes in Belfast, Dublin, Los Angeles, New York and London.
The Festival brings together the best calibre industry people to provide a skills-based experience that is relevant to where young people are in society. I wish all involved a very successful and enjoyable festival.
I would like to affirm the value of Cinemagic film screenings, masterclasses and film education programmes to Moving Image Arts (MIA) candidates across all three levels of the subject, at GCSE, AS and A2. The Cinemagic Festival gives students a unique opportunity to view a range of films that are directly relevant to the specifications’ content and learning outcomes of MIA including strong illustrative examples of genre-specific, realist and expressionist films. In
instances where a speaker or workshop is also included in the event, it can be of even more benefit, as time is taken after the screening itself to discuss and analyse film language and structure with the student audience. This is relevant to the online examination unit. It is a testament to the value of Cinemagic that so many teachers bring their students to the festival each year.

Suffragette Education Preview Fri 9 Oct 10.30am – 12.15pm Odyssey Cinemas 12 – 18 year olds £4.00 per student
An intense drama that tracks the story of the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement as they fought for the right to vote, women who were forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal State. These women were not primarily from the genteel educated classes, they were working women who had seen peaceful protest achieve nothing. Radicalised and turning to violence as the only route to change, they were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality - their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives. The
character of Maud, played by Carey Mulligan, is one such foot soldier. The story of her fight for dignity is both heart-breaking and inspirational. The film stars Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Brendan Gleeson, Anne-Marie Duff, Ben Whishaw and Meryl Streep. The film is directed by Sarah Gavron, who reteams with her Brick Lane screenwriter Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady), and is produced by Faye Ward and Alison Owen (Saving Mr Banks). Suffragette opens in cinemas nationwide on 16 Oct (Cert: 12A).

F-Rating: Representing Women in Film With Holly Tarquini Mon 12 Oct 10.30am – 1.00pm Odyssey Cinemas 15 – 21 year olds £5.00 per student The F-rating is new film classification to change who tells the stories we see on screen and thereby shift the inner narratives of audiences. Every film which answers yes to the one of the following questions receives the F-rating stamp of approval: 1. Does it have a female director? 2. Is it written by a woman? 3. Is/are there complex female characters on screen who exist in their own right (and aren’t simply there to support the male lead)? The F-rating exists to shine a light on the amazing work that women are doing in film, and to
encourage critics to review these films, audiences to go to them and ultimately, for studios to make more of them. F-Rating founder Holly Tarquini will be on hand to talk about the origins of F-Rating, to speak about the importance of such a classification outlet as well as to answer student questions before a screening of A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (Cert: 15) a film that follows the F-rating ethos.

Nathan (Asa Butterfield) is an autistic teenage prodigy who struggles with people, not least his mother, Julie (Sally Hawkins), but finds comfort in numbers. Lovemovies.ie ‘Craft & Graft Workshop’ Screening: Older Than Ireland Mon 19 Oct 10.30am – 1.00pm Odyssey Cinemas 15 – 21 year olds £5.00 per student At the Industry Trust for IP Awareness the belief is when you learn about all of the hard work (graft) that goes into the creation of a film - you get more of a handle on why it’s not yours to take for free. Plus you can better understand why the real life people who invested their time, skills and money in making the film deserve to get paid for their work. When everyone understands the importance of supporting the film industry and paying for the films we watch then there will be more films made to enjoy in the future.
To celebrate the hard work that goes into every aspect of the Film industry in Ireland, we are teaming with filmmakers SnackBox Films for a very special screening of their new documentary Older Than Ireland, followed by a Q&A with the SnackBox team – where they will tell you about their film, their job, the jobs along the way and why they love movies. Older Than Ireland - Directed by award winning filmmaker Alex Fegan, Older Than Ireland features thirty men and women aged 100 years and over. Often funny and at times poignant, the film explores each centenarian’s journey, from their birth at the dawn of Irish independence to their life as a centenarian in modern day Ireland. (Cert: TBC).

New Irish Film Showcase: You’re Ugly Too + Director Q&A with Mark Noonan Wed 21 Oct 10.30am – 1.00pm Odyssey Cinemas 15 – 18 year olds £5.00 per student You’re Ugly Too - A bittersweet and gently humorous drama focusing on the relationship between newly orphaned, 11-year-old Stacey (Lauren Kinsella) and her recently-paroled uncle Will (Aidan Gillen). Two exceptionally engaging central performances breathe charm and laughs into the perfectly observed relationship at the heart of this moving, and uplifting story (Cert: TBC).
Writer and director Mark Noonan first came to prominence when his short film Questions won the Claire Lynch Award at the 2009 Cork International Film Festival. His feature directorial debut You’re Ugly Too was nominated for Best Debut Feature at Berlinale 2015. The Legend of Longwood Wed 21 Oct 10.30am – 1.00pm Participating School 12 – 18 year olds £5.00 per student The Legend of Longwood - Mickey Miller is a 12-year-old girl from New York whose great love is horses. She has little enthusiasm for her mother’s plan to start a new life in a run-down mill she has inherited in Longwood, an Irish village at the end of the world. Mickey’s presence in Longwood coincides with the return of the Black Knight, a legendary ruler whose appearance always means that something evil is going to happen to the villagers. Mickey hears and sees things that others can’t, and forms an immediate bond with Silver, a proud and untameable horse.
Realising that she is linked to the story of the Black Knight, Mickey sets out to redeem the Knight and bring peace to Longwood, but first she must save the lives of seven horses and thwart the evil plans of a greedy and ambitious woman. (Cert: TBC) Director Lisa Mulcahy’s film credits include Situations Vacant, Gift of the Magi and Coming Home. She has also directed twelve episodes of the award winning RTÉ drama series The Clinic and two episodes of On Home Ground. Previous projects include social documentaries, short films as well as numerous commercials for television and cinema.

O’Ei has inherited her dad’s love and talent for art. But while his work is celebrated throughout the city, few are aware of the young woman who so ably assists him and who on occasion paints instead of him! A lively portrayal of a free-spirted woman overshadowed by her larger than life father. The latest film from Production I.G (Giovanni’s Island, A Letter to Momo) Miss Hokusai is a spectacular animation from director Heiichi Hara (Summer Days with Coo, Colorful) and is the recent winner of the Jury Award at Annecy 2015.
