ENTHIRAN

A year has gone and its time to take a look at various events that unfolded in the year and the progress sheet of Tamilcinema. At Cinemamaters.com, we now take a close look at the hits, flops and the important events that 2010 has witnessed. The year abolsutely belong to Rajnikanth and his Enthiran. Supposedly the first sci-fi film of Indian cinema, Starring Rajnikanth and directed by Shankar, the movie was made at a whopping Rs 150 crore (the most expensive film to have been made in India). It did not just garner rave reviews and huge collections, but also ended up breaking barriers and wideningthe market for Tamil films. The smart publicity, innovative content and coming together of big names like Sun Pictures, Rajnikanth, Shankar, AishwaryaRai Bachchan and music composer A R Rahman meant Enthiran was all big and beautiful. The movie was a visual spectacle loaded wiyth graphics and songs were canned in virgin localitions abroad by Rathnavelu ina splendid manner. Says Shankar, ‘Rajnikanth’s dedication and the liberty given by my producers (Sun Pictures) helped mecome up with the movie’. The movie can touted as the one big highlight of the year as it was on par with any Hollywood flick. On his part, Rajnikanth said, ‘all was big in the movie and there was enormopus responsibility on our shoulders to deliver. We managed to pull it off convincingly’. The movie was released simultaneously in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu and went on rake in moolah in all languges.

MANMADHAN AMBU Tamil cinema is incomplete without Kamal Haasan. The man with Mida touch, who has successfully completed 50 years in the filmdom, managed just one release this year. Manmadhan Ambu, enacted and written by Kamal Haasan hit the screens at the fag end of the year. Produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin and directed by K S Ravikumar, the movie starred Kamal Haasan, Madhavan, Trisha and Sangeetha in lead roles. A comedy-caper, it managed to get a positive response from the masses. Interestingly, a major portion of the movie was filmed aboard a star cruise on the Mediterranean Sea. Kamal Haasan incurred the wrath of a section of the Hindu community for a song penned by him in Manmadhan Ambu. Kamal Haasan said that the whole crew of Manmadhan Ambu have decided to remove a controversial song sequence from the movie that evoked protest from a section of Hindu community. With just a few days left for Manmadhan Ambu’s release, the song raised kerrfuffle as a petition was filed against Kamal Haasan, who penned the lyrics. The petitioners alleged that Kamal Haasan has hurt the sentiments of Hindus as the lyrics denigrated Hindu God and Goddess.Kamal Haasan also said, ‘I had come to know that a song in Manmadhan Ambu has hurt sentiments of a section of Hindu community. The song that has been censored and repeatedly aired in a television channel winning acclaims of music-lovers has landed into a problem.’ Had I been the producer of the film, I would have gone on to show the song with the censor certificate. But this is Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Red Giant Movie’s production venture. Several people cutting across various religions would come to watch the movie. Hence we chose to remove the song sequence voluntarily from the movie, Kamal Haasan said‘In my family there are Saivites, Vaishnavaites, Muslims and Christians. Many are spiritualists. But I am a rationalist. I will be the same, he said and added, ‘Manmadhan Ambu is business and in this I am just play my part as actor. intervention by politicians and controversies in the name of religion is not new to me. The decision to remove the song has been taken to ensure people watch the movie without any intervention’.. Kamal Haasan meanwhile appeared in a guest role in a Malayalam movie this year. sources close to the actor say that he is contemplating top do a full-fledged Malayalam movie early next year. A good news for his fans in 2011.

WHAT WAS GOING ON WITH AJITH IN 2010 ? AJITH WILL BE AJITH Titles and prefixes have always been a symbol of status, popularity, and success in the film industry. Right from the days of MGR and Sivaji Ganesan it has been a trend. However, the new breed of actors seems to think otherwise. Yes, Ajith has decided to denounce his Ultimate Star title. The actor, who is affectionately called as the Ultimate Star, said that the film industry is undergoing a sea change and in such circumstances there is no need for titles. The actor also reportedly wrote a letter to Sivaji Productions, the production house

AJITH BRINGS A BUZZ TO THE CM FUNCTION A grand gala function organized by the film fraternity to convey their heartfelt gratitude to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Mr. M Karunanidhi for granting land for housing proposal for film industry workers witnessed a sparkler of sorts from Ajith Kumar who is known for his politically incorrect but honest statements. Ajith, who is known for his nonappearance in such events, made a rare entry yesterday at a glittering ceremony at Nehru Stadium in Chennai. He made a frank appeal to the CM that film fraternity should not be arm-twisted to attend such political and social events. He said, “They want us to attend such events and at the same time are against us joining politics.” Speaking at the event, Rajini said that the CM is offering land and housing facilities for those who cannot afford it. He appealed to all the film personalities not to apply for a house in the allotted land if they can afford it elsewhere. While the CM spoke, he said that he was against mixing politics with the art world. The other luminaries like Amitabh Bachchan, Bharathi Raja, VC Guhanathan, and Sarathkumar stated that they were participating in the function out of their own will and were not forced. The event was attended by most of the bigwigs in the industry like Kamal, Rajni, Ilayaraja, Vairamuthu and others. The function also witnessed various cultural events organized by the film and television artists. Ajith thanked the Superstar for the latter’s standing ovation for his speech during the recently held felicitation function for CM. Soon after meeting the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M Karunanidhi yesterday, Ajith answered a volley of questions thrown at him by the reporters. He said that the visit was a courtesy call.

A.R. RAHMAN - A DIAMOND FROM TAMILNADU

A big Year for Rahman, we all know and have heard about Endhiran’s Music score. Enough about that, There were many more things that happened in the Music Genius’s life in 2010.

KM MUSIC CONSERVATORY: It started off with the opening of his Music School, A.R. Rahman’s brainchild, the KM Music Conservatory in Kodambakkam, Chennai now boasts of international faculty brought together from various parts of the world, all of them products of the most prestigious schools of music. The faculty consists of alumni of the Boston Conservatory, the University of California, the Trinity College, the Royal College of Music and many other such esteemed names. With such an imposing line up of musicians in the faculty, the quality of musical instruction available at the KM Music Conservatory is, beyond doubt, of an international standard. The conservatory, of which Rahman himself is the principal, offers course programs affiliated by the Middlesex University. The programs include a preparatory program (2-5 years), a foundation program (1-2 years), a degree program (three year) and a diploma program (2 years). The conservatory envisions expanding the horizon of musicians in India by offering education in both Indian and Western music besides music technology and its mission is to provide students with a strong artistic, intellectual, and technical foundation. The KM Music conservatory can serve as a model for other similar institutions to be set up in India to enhance the quality of music and musicians produced by our country.

JAI HO CONCERT: The Journey Home World Tour is the first world tour by Indian musician A. R. Rahman. Rahman organized the tour in 2010, following the success of his soundtrack album Slumdog Millionaire, and particularly the song “Jaiho”. The tour was kicked off on June 11 at the Nassau Coliseum in New York and was initially decided to span 16 major cities worldwide. The tour was highly successful with tickets of many of the concerts being sold out several days before the respective event. The Detroit concert was originally planned on 19 June but was postponed when the stage at Pontiac Silver dome collapsed. No injuries were reported, but the concerts had to be rescheduled and the U. S. concerts were resumed only in September.

“SEMMOZHIYAAM THAMIZH MOZHIYAAM”

A Tamil song composed by A. R. Rahman, penned by Tamilnadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and performed by several leading Tamil artistes of over three generations. It is officially the theme song for the World Classical Tamil Conference 2010, encapsulating the contributions of Tamil culture and literature down the ages. The song, a tribute to the Tamil language, features a fusion of various musical styles, including Carnatic, Folk, Acoustic, Sufi, Rock and Rap. A poem titled Semmozhi was penned by the writer turned politician, M. Karunanidhi specifically for this meet, but with the wider vision that it be an anthem for Tamils across the globe. He demanded this poem to be set to tune by ace Tamil composer A. R. Rahman. It took two to two-and-a-half months for Rahman to complete recording the song, which was immensely praised and skyrocketed to fame upon its release. Neither Rahman nor Gautham Menon, who directed the song, took any remuneration to do this song. 12 YEAR 2010

SIMBHU TURNS LYRICIST AGAIN Silambarasan is a multi-faceted film personality. He is an actor, choreographer, director and a good lyric writer. He had penned songs like Loosu Pennae in Manmadhan and where is The Party in Silambattam. Now the actor is busy shooting for Vaanam, a remake of Telugu hit Vedham. It has Bharath, Anushka, Vega, and Sonia Agarwal in key roles. Music is by Yuvanshankar Raja. Helmed by Krissh, it has Nirav Shah cranking the camera. Says Simbhu, ‘I have penned a song in the film. It is a youthful and entertaining song. Yuvan and me share a good rapport. It is evident in the way the song has come out. It was a delight writing lyrics for the song’. On doing a remake, he said, ‘I am generally not keen on doing remakes. But Vedham has five contrasting characters that meet at one point. That story impressed me, so I agreed’. Silambarasan is confident that songs in his forthcoming film Vaanam would become a big hit. Set to tunes by Yuvanshankar Raja, the album reportedly has a collection of songs, which are different from each other and will rule the audio charts.‘I’m sure it’ll rock,’ says the excited actor. ‘Yuvan and I sat down to compose for Vaanam, we wanted to ensure that we came up with a track that would stand out and become popular.’ There is a special number in the album that will have a blend of Tamil and English lyrics, with Simbu crooning the Tamil part and Yuvan delivering the English lines. ‘There are no ego clashes when it comes to Yuvan and me,’ Simbu says. ‘He understands what I want and he knows how I envisage the visuals when we get to shooting the song. So, he always comes up with the best possible tunes for the situation. We are more friends when we’re working, always discussing and improving the sounds, rather than collaborating like other singer-music composer duos.’ Besides shooting for Vaanam, which is a multi-starrer, Simbu is also busy with two other films — Poda Podi and Vettai Mannan. ‘Podaa Podi has shaped up very well and is looking fresh,’ he says, ‘we start shooting for Vettai Mannan from Monday. It’s a stylish action subject. Besides, there’s a nice comedy track in the film too which will be one of its highlights.’Silambarasan has once again admitted that he is a great fan of Anushka. He said this while addressing media persons in Chennai. Speaking on the occasion, Simbhu said, ‘ I am great fan of Anushka. I marveled at her ease in carrying a whole movie (Arundhathee) in her shoulders. She is cool, casual and expressive. I am happy that this movie has a huge star cast in the form of Bharath, Anushka, Vega, Prakashraj, and Sonia Agarwal among others. The music would rock for Yuvan is composing the tunes. Equally appealing would be Nirav’s camera, he adds. After Vinnaithaaandi Varuvaya, I was waiting for good script, when I saw the Telugu film Vedham. Immediately I decided to do the Tamil version. What started as a small venture has become a huge thing today. Major portion of the movie has been completed and we are eager to release the movie soon, he adds. WWW.CINEMAMATTERS.COM

PRABHUDEVA WEDS NAYANTHARA??? It all started in the Movie Villu, the story behind her mysterious tattoo on her arm. “Prabhu”. Then there was the interview on a TV channel by the Nayan saying that it was indeed the name of her lover.

I WILL MARRY NAYAN: PRABHUDEVA Choreographer - director Prabhudeva has opened his heart out on his alleged affair with Nayanthara finally. While shooting for Urumi near Mumbai, Prabhudeva reportedly confirmed that he would soon marry Nayanthara and that both are madly in love with each other. It may be recalled that Prabhudeva is already married and has two sons while Nayanthara is still single. His affair with Nayanthara was doing the rounds for some time. He had directed Nayan for Villu, the Vijay starrer. In an interview, he said, ‘Nayanthara is special. I am in love with Nayanthara and we will be getting married soon. It’s a personal decision’. He also said that any man who is in love would like to spend more time with his woman.’ I am no different and there is no meaning in both of us being busy and having no time for each other. She had a beautiful innings and I know very well that she is a top actress who is much in demand,’

Ramalath has reportedly said she will not make any hasty comments and would speak with Prabhudeva in this regard and spell out her statement. Actress Nayanthara has chosen not to do any more films and concentrate more on her personal life. The actress from God’s Own Country is rumored to be getting ready for marriage with choreographer-director Prabhudeva. Buzz is that she has accompanied him for his shooting in Kerala. She is known for hitting headlines for various controversies, started his career in Tamil with Ayya and went on to do movies like Rajnikanth’s Chandramukhi, Villu with Vijay and Aadhavan with Surya, Boss engira Baskaran with Arya. Prabhudeva chose to consult his advocates on the reply to be issued on his behalf to the petition filed by his wife Latha Prabhudeva aka Ramalath. She had filed a plea with a Family Court seeking a directive to ensure that she be united with her husband. She had alleged in her plea that actress Nayantara and Prabhudeva are allegedly in love and that the latter has been avoiding the family (Ramalath and their two sons) on the insistence of Nayantara. She said that she was living in peace till Nayanthara entered Prabhudeva’s life. Meanwhile, reports say Nayanthara has been facing stiff opposition in Andhra Pradesh for playing the role of Seetha in a mythological movie opposite Balakrishna. Various Women’s organizations had allegedly planning to hold a protest in case she is given that role.

Following this the court issued the orders. Prabhudeva has been on the headlines for all wrong reasons. He chose to break his silence. He called on the media in Chennai and spoke about his forthcoming projects and his Hindi venture. Queried about reports appearing in various sections of the media, Prabhudeva said, ‘Indeed yes. Too much is written about me. I don’t know whether it deserves such a importance. I don’t want to make any comments.’ He says, ‘ I never plan anything in life and take them as it comes’. Prabhudeva going strong and steady. He seems to be concentrating on his career. Close on the heels of completing Engeyum Kadhal with Jayam Ravi, he has commenced his next directorial venture with Vishal. Sameera Reddy plays the heroine. He would be starting his Hindi venture with Akshay Kumar upon completing the project. DEAL DONE FOR PRABHUDEVA Actor-director-choreographer Prabhudeva has entered into a divorce settlement with his wife Ramlath and agreed to give her three residential properties, two cars and 10 lakh in alimony. In return, Latha has agreed to relinquish all her rights and claims over her husband and his other properties and has agreed to withdraw all the cases she filed against him. A joint affidavit, signed by the couple, was submitted at a Family Court, when they appeared together and remained closeted with presiding officer Pandurangan for a while. Latha filed a petition in the family court seeking restitution of conjugal rights with Prabhudeva. She alleged that the actordirector had a relationship with actress Nayantara and that he was neglecting his family and did not provide even the minimum financial assistance to family members.
