“Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do...”

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK Dear Readers, First I want to wish everyone a wonderful New Year, I hope you are still keeping up with your new year’s resolutions! The year has started out to be great with the release of many movies which gives me a signal that this year is going to be flourishing with new stories and scripts. Tamil cinema is getting bigger and better by the day. Out of the 900+ movies sitting in the box after being certified by the censor board, I hope most of those will see the sun light again in the theaters. I had such a humbling experience with Director, Writer, Actor, Husband and Father VISU sir, He has truly made me realise that no matter how much we grow and shine in life, we must always be true to our roots, which is why he is a legend. He took me through a flashback journey in his Career and life and I thoroughly enjoyed it and I hope you will do too. I had a personal e-Q&A session with him and was such a delight working with you Sir. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy life for us at cinemamatters. I quote Johann Wolfgang Van Goethe “ Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do...” What ever you want or dreamt about doing, This is the year for you to go and follow your dreams. On that note Enjoy Reading! Sainthavi. MOVIE REVIEW

Kaavalan STARRING : Vijay, Asin, Rajkiran Vadivelu BANNER : Ekaveera Creations DIRECTOR : Siddique MUSIC : Vidyasagar CINEMATOGRAPHY: N. K. Ekambaram EDITING : Gowri Shankar LANGUAGE : Tamil

KAVALAN MOVIE REVIEW Expect the unexpected. After all troubles finally comes Kavalan. Crossing all hurdles it has come to enthrall masses. Let us put it straight, it is no regular Vijay film with the hero mouthing punch lines and bashing goons on a spree from frame one.A remake of Malayalam hit Body Guard, it is a sedate and a soft film however presented best by director Siddique keeping Vijay’s popular image in the mind. Asin joins hands with Vijay and there is Vadivelu to provide some comic relief. Boominathan (Vijay) is a carefree and talented youth, who lives in a small village. Fearing that his attitude could spoil his future, his parents (Nizhalgal Ravi and Yuvashree) send him to Muthuramalingam (Rajkiran), a big wig in the village. As there is a threat to Muthuramalingam’s daughter Meera (Asin), he asks Boominathan to protect her by providing security cover 24x7. Even as our hero busy with the job, Meera falls for his good heart and charm. But things are not the same when Muthuramalingam comes to know about this. What comes as a relief is it is nonsense masala movie. It is loaded with some interesting twists and turns predominantly hilarious, and it has commercial elements presented in a neat package. Well it is more of Vijay in Kadhalukku Mariyadhai meeting Vijay in Pokkirri. He is cool, calm and collective at many places. With no nonsense lengthy dialogues boasting him, the movie is passable for Vijay. He ensures his good screen presence. Asin is not far behind. She is not just a glam doll, but also a performing actress. She proves that again here. Then there is Vadivelu, who plays a role tailor-made for him. His wits bring the roof down with laughter. Raj Kiran lends solidity to the script with his graceful show. Unfortunately Vidyasagar’s tunes are forgettable. Kavalan passes the muster for the team has tried something different. MOVIE REVIEW

Aadukalam STARRING : Dhanush, Taapsee Kishore, BANNER : Five Star Films DIRECTOR : Vetrimaran MUSIC : G. V. Prakash Kumar CINEMATOGRAPHY: Velraj EDITING : T . Kishore LANGUAGE : Tamil

AADUKALAM MOVIE REVIEW Very rarely we come across realistic portrayals in Tamil cinema. And very few directors have achieved the rare combination of undiluted reality meeting with commercial success. Vettrimaran’s Aadukalam has all potential to become one such attempt. Balu Mahendra’s favorite assistant, Vettrimaran has made his mentor proud once again, and his style of narration and takings are very similar to the ace director, though he has told a racy and riveting tale, throwing light on the good, bad and ugly underbelly of Madurai. Providing him ample support for the second time is Dhanush (no prizes for guessing that the first time was Polladhavan). The actor’s portrayal of a Madurai-based youth is so authentic and that you could not believe he is a Chennai guy in real life. For Karuppu and his mentor Pettaikaran (Jayabalan), winning in rooster fights is more than a prestige issue. Also there is Durai (Kishore), who too is an understudy of Pettaikaran. One day, Karuppu comes across Irene (Taapsee), an Anglo Indian girl, and cupid struck him. Everything gets terribly disturbed when everything seems to be well. For, a challenge between Pettaikaran and his rival Rathnam (Narein) results in yet another cockfight and its outcome is unexpected. Dhanush’s performance is his asset. There are many scenes that pronounce his versatility. Taapsee is a welcome arrival to Tamil cinema. Not just Jayabalan and Kishore, but even those playing small roles have come out with their best. G V Prakash’s music and background score adds immense strength to the film. So is Velraj’s cinematography. On the whole, Vettrimaran’s determination to provide a quality entertainer without any compromises has put him in the list of A-class directors. There are some minuses, but no doubt that Aadukalam is an outstanding show. MOVIE REVIEW

Siruthai STARRING : Karthi, Tamannaah BANNER : Studio Green DIRECTOR : Siva MUSIC : Vidyasagar CINEMATOGRAPHY:R. Velraj LANGUAGE : Tamil

SIRUTHAI MOVIE REVIEW Watching Siruthai is like eating hot ‘milaga bajjis’ at a roadside shop. Hot and tangy, the taste of this high voltage masala movie would linger in your mouth even long time after you leave the theatre. Hold on! The precaution here is you should leave the logic at the parking lot along with your vehicle. For the film is high on energy and enthusiasm and low on logic and plausibility. Directed by Siva, Siruthai, which has Karthi playing a dual role for the first time, is all about how a sincere police officer is killed and his look alike, a thief, takes his place to put an end to the baddies. Highlights of the film are Karthi’s performance and Vidyasagar’s music. While the actor adds immense value to both the roles he has played, the music composer’s songs and background score make the movie more meaningful. And there are Tamannah and Santhanam to provide relief in terms of glamour and comedy, respectively. Siva has brilliantly put all these pieces together, to present a picture, which is near to perfection. Rocket Raja (Karthi) is a small-time thief who steals anything and everything he comes across, in the company of Kaatupoochi (Santhanam). When he falls for the charm of a beautiful girl, (Tamannah), life brings in a rude twist in the form of a young girl who comes calling him dad. How? Why? Well, she is daughter of an honest cop Rathanavel Pandian (Karthi). He is on the run because he chose to take on the gang lords. Eventually, the dons take him out. So steps in Rocket Raja (with the help of Pandian’s aides) into his shoes and finishes the unfinished work of Pandian. He also takes care of his daughter. The film’s strength is its clarity. Right from scene one, the intentions are clear that it is an out and out mass film for mass audience. Critical acclaim? Well when the cash register is ringing should you bother about that? MOVIE REVIEW

IIaignan STARRING :Pa. Vijay, Remya Nambeesan, Meera Jasmine, Namitha BANNER : Martin Production DIRECTOR : Suresh Krishna MUSIC : Vidyasagar LANGUAGE : Tamil

ILAIGNAN MOVIE REVIEW Marking the 75th Year inTamil cinema for our chief minister Thiru M.Karunanidhi, Ilaignan falls under the Patriotic. ‘Ilaignan’ starts with the first frame adjusted to the year 1959 where the character named ‘ Deivanayagam( Sarath Babu) hands over his ship building company to his son Rajanayagam( Suman) who is greedy and sadist. Rajanayagam is exactly opposite to his father. He is greedy and has no heart to his working staff. He tortures them in a pitiful way and Sena( Namitha) plays the role of his wife, who is mentally fine tuned to Rajanayagam’s mind. Kargi ( Pa. Vijay) , is the son of Arockiasammy( Nassar) and Vallimmal ( Kushboo) happens to be his mother. Kargi is forced to work for the ship building company after his father’s death and he wants to bring a revolution in the ship building company of Rajanayagan. Right from the day one, kargi wants to subside the autocracies of rajayanayagan . The torture gets behind the saturation point as the workers are asked to work 12- 16 hours for a day and if anybody revolts, then it will be an end to him. Ramya( Remya nambeeshan) daughter of chettar (Y G Magendran) is Kargi’s love intereste and things go in a very smooth way in between the couple. When Meera ( Meera jasmine) returns from London, things start to change. She is the daughter of deivanagam. She joins hands with workers. Meera wants to free people from her brother’s dreaded torture and so she supports kargi in every way. Kargi succeeded in churning out a revolt and rajanayagam and his wife sniff that at the first go. How the bosses of the ship building company tackle the revolt and how Kargi full fills his dream is the rest of the story. CinemaMatters | Legend Visu Talks

CM : What is your feeling about today’s directors? What would you like to install in them? Visu : I really pity them. Mr. K. Balachander’s Cinema days can be compared with the “Fielders” in Cricket. They used to get many chances to see the ball. My days o f cinema was can be compared with “Bowlers”. Only a few got the chances, but they were solid. Hello...Today’s Directors.... You are like “Batsmen” ...You get only one chance and if you miss it you are OUT. You should always keep the Producers’ interest in mind and if you do so, you will be accepted, even after a failure.

CM : Your idea about remakes of old movies? Does it bring back good movies with a different tone or are they being exploited? Visu : There is a saying “Old wine in New Bottle” A new one from me “Old wife in a new Saree” Both are accepted formula. You take “Raamayanaa” and “Mahabharatha”. They are epics and no writer can escape writing a story without touching them. I saw “Mano Charithra’ (Telugu version of Ek thuje Keliye, from which Ek Thuje Keliye was taken) along with a few friends. When we were coming out, they said that the story was very novel. I smiled. It was an inspiration from “Mahabharatha”. Yes...”Agnyaanavaasam” should have been the inspiration.

CM : How come there are no more movies like samsaram athu minsaram? Is it because joint family culture is vanishing? Visu : Let us not throw the blame on the present Culture. There is no Producer to accept me or accept such stories. That is the fact. Even if a Producer accepts to take the story, he may require a duet in Australia between Raguvaran’s character and Laxmi’s character. A bedroom scene with 60/70 dancers between Chandrasekar’s character and Madhuri’s character; A nail biting fighting scene between my character and Raghuvaran’s character. Still, If I take “Samsaram Athu Minsaram” again it will be bumper hit. It may go better than the original. But there will be a small difference. When it was originally released in 80s people identified themselves with one of the characters of the film and identified their family with Cinema Ammayappan’s family and saw the film. Hence it was a grand success. Now, there is no joint family, Father and Mother of the Head of the family is rarely seen in any family. They are counting their days in an old age home in a corner. A husband/A wife and a child is the Joint Family now. In some places, even a child is considered” LUXURY’. We cannot see an involved Kannamma (Manorama) at all. But, If I take “Samsaram Athu Minsaram” again, inspite of the above problems, it will be bumper hit. It may run better than the original. Another AVM Saravanan will get the National Award. Do you know why? People will see it as a mythological or puranical film. It may go like another “Thiruvilayaadal” or “Saraswathiyin Sabatham”

CM : How do you like to spend time in US with your Daughters and Grand children? Do you keep to your self as a father and Grand father or does the director Peek out here and there? Visu : There is a saying... “Be a Roman, when you are in Rome”. That saying is not applicable to me. I cannot change my character according to places. I cannot be a Father, I cannot be a Grand father, I cannot be an actor or I cannot be a Director. Wherever I am and whatever I do, I am permitted only to be an accused “HUSBAND’... sorry...accused Glorified Husband. Even though American Government has given me free visa for ten years, my visa at our daughters’ houses are ‘restricted visa” I cannot open my mouth. There will be a mega koottani there in the form of my sons in law, daughters and grand children. Their only agenda will be to blame me through out. You will see a different Visu there.

CM : How does it feel hosting shows and meeting everyday people day to day in your Makkal Arangam and Chinna Chinna Raagam? WWW.CINEMAMATTERS.COM

Visu : Keep it as a top most secret. I went to Trichy to conduct a Makkal Arangam for a particular College for their students, lecturers and staff members. The programme was on a Sunday (19.12.10) and I arrived there three days earlier i.e. on Thursday evening (16.12.10) for the interview to be held the next day (17.12.10) for the speakers. I do not know why.... I started shivering, when I arrived at the Trichy Railway Station.... I went to the Hotel and shivering was becoming from bad to worse...I was adviced to go to the Doctor and the Doctor immediately admitted me in ICU. I do not know what happened later. I was there for a few hours, was shifted in an ambulance van to Chennai with a team of a Doctor and First Aid Unit, admitted in Apollo Hospital, Chennai, not in ICU, but in CCU (Critical Care Unit) When I was trying to limb back to normalcy, my wife was looking at me with water balls in her eyes. It seems Doctors adviced her to inform every one. (I do not know what he wanted her to inform. It seems, he just said “ Uravukkaranga kitta ellam sollidumma” I knew that some one was tapping my doors and I requested him to give me some more time to finish off my Professional duties and responsibilities. A few commitments were made for Makkal Arangam and Chinna Chinna Raagam. HE let me go free. So, even God has special care, kindness and blessings for my Professional involvement.

CM : Who is your favorite Director?

12

JAN - 2011

CinemaMatters | Legend Visu Talks Visu : For other Directors’ movies, if I liked them, I used to say “Just Ok”. If I did not like them, I used to say “Average”If I see the movies of only Three Directors, if I liked, I used to see “Go and see it yourself”, thereby making an indirect can vassing. If I did not like, I used to say “Theater pakkam poidaatheenga”, thereby making an attempt to stop them, so that they need not think and talk anything bad about those three Directors on that particular film. They are KB, Bharathi Raja and Manirathinam. Am I their fans or fanatics?

CM : What characteristic in a person turns you off the most, like lying, back stabbing, not being punctual etc. It could be as small as not being punctual to serious as lying or cheating? Visu : Considering the traffic jam everywhere, every time and for every vehicle, here at Chennai, where I live, not keeping up the punctuality is not a problem at all. Even Bridegroom is delayed nowadays for marriages. Sastrigal is amicable in changing the muhurththa neram. From the top most person to the bottom most, either Money wise or Education wise or Culture wise or Popularity wise or Politics wise, one cannot survive in this world without telling atleast a few lies a day. Backstabbing is a very crude word.... Why don’t you use it as “Tactics”? Every one has some “Tactic” including me.I will have to be a Single Man in this World, if I don’t accept these qualities in any person.I am not an exception anywhere in keeping me away from these qualities also. If I don’t have these qualities, I will have be a friend of Mahatma, Buddha and Vivekananda.

I should have / must have thrown that membership long back. I have done it now, but not out of love to my wife, but out of some gratitude to her. I hate that quality in me. I feel guilty.

Q : What is your favorite restaurant in Chennai and your Favorite dish?

Visu : There is a limit in irritating me. Doctors have already adviced me to reduce Sugar items, because the sugar in me is on the higher side. Further adviced to reduce more salt in the food, as Creatinine is on the higher side. Vegetables are far at distance as Potassium is also on the higher side. “Norukkuththeeni” has to be completely avoided, as I have to control my fat and pressure. You are unnecessarily reminding me through your question about the Pongal/Vadai of Saravana Bhavan and Aappam/Kurmaa of Karaikudi Restaurant

CM : What one quality wo uld you change if you had a chance to in yourself?

Visu : I would have quit smoking within a few days or months after I started smoking in 1963, That white blagad followed me 30 to 40 times every day till 16th December, 2010. Oh God... about 47 years.I would have thrown my laziness atleast 20 years back, so that I could have gone for walking, which would have avoided so many of my present physical problems. I am a male dominated Society’s main member.

CM :Do you like to be in front of the camera or behind?

In front of Camera Without Actor Visu, I would not have got my three daughters married in a very decent way. I am in a comfortable house. I have two cars at my disposal. I have a few servants to look after our needs. Though not posh, I am running a reasonable life. I have not expected a penny so far from any one. I don’t owe any penny to anyone. I am able to make a comfortable trip to USA every year along with my wife for Summer Vacation. I have my own duties and responsibilities. I was able to perform my duties and take care of my responsibilities only due to Actor Visu. I owe my gratitude to Actor Visu. In front and behind the camera Director Visu is a pucca JAALRAA to Actor Visu. If Actor Visu says “Aattukku Ettu Kaal” Director Visu will say “Yes...Yes.... I also counted it” Poor man. He is caught in Professional Compulsion. Now let me come to Writer Visu,Who is always behind camera No Camera can catch the inner feeling of Writer Visu. He is dead long back. He is only feeding the other two. He is only playing second fiddle to both the above. Writer Visu has his own dreams and ambitions. He wrote “Keezh Vaanam Sivakkum” for Sivaji, “Nallavanukku Nallavan, Netrikkan, Mr. Bharath, Pudhukkavithai and Thillu Mullu” for Rajini, “Simla Special” for Kamal. But, I do not know what made him to play Second fiddle to Director/Actor Visu and keep Quiet, when other two are keeping quiet. Can’t he write better scripts to modern heroes? I love Writer Visu... I like Writer Visu... I admire Writer Visu. That Writer Visu’s only vaarisu is MAKKAL ARANGAM Visu. WWW.CINEMAMATTERS.COM

A few words wisdom! For our Readers from a director, writer, actor and an a legend like you...

I am now regularly going for a walk in the mornings. Because of the Pongal Festival week and because of Kanimozhi & Co s Government sponsored “Sangamam” Programme in most of the Parks this week, Corporation of Chennai must have instructed the concerned park attendees to keep them neat and clean. Sweepers were busily engaged in Shenoy Nagar Thiru Vi Ka Park in the morning for evening programme. After a round of walk, I was resting in a bench. Two lady sweepers were fighting. I do not know still what was the reason for their fight. They were shouting at the top of their voices. All sorts of bad words were freely and openly used. A third lady came there to make a compromise. Only the broomstick was her weapon. She just said gave a judgement. Oh.... what a statement. It can beat Bhagwath Geetha in all angles. “Ava appa ammavukku nee porakkala... Un appa ammavukku ava porakkala.. Ava Raththam un udambula oodala.... Un Raththam ava udambula oodala Eppadidi unga rendu per karuththu mattum onna irukka mudiyum? Maarupattuththaan irukkum? Adha purinjuttu velaya seiyungadi” The two then dispersed. But, that statement will never disperse from my heart. Idhu Avangalukku mattum illa, Edukkum Porundhum. Ellarukkum Porundhum. Ulagaththukke Porundhum.

KO: Click, capture & release Known for clicking others in their cameras, press photographers hogged the limelight at the audio launch of Ko in Chennai on Wednesday. Since the film directed by K V Anand with Jiiva playing the lead role is about a press photographer, organizers of the function asked lens men from various media houses, who were there to cover the event, to release the first copy of the CD, which has songs composed by Harris Jayaraj. There was a laser light display, which was eye-catching, followed by a mime act about the day in the life of a cameraman, which was interesting. Anand made it a point to honor the unsung heroes- the still cameramen, as he himself started life as a still photographer. They released the audio in the presence of the cast and crew and director Priyadarshan who gave Anand his first break as cinematographer. Two leading ladies enacted two songs on stage, Karthika of Ennamo Yeadho and Piaa of Gala Gala. The slickly edited trailer promo was also screened. Producers Kumar Jayaraman and James were present along with Udhayanidhi Stalin who is presenting the film on his Red Giant Movies banner. Karthika

Karthika D/O Radha: Like mom, like daughter

K

arthika, daughter of veteran actress Radha, is optimistic for her maiden Tamil venture Ko is all set to hit the screen.

Her first film was in Telugu, Josh, with Naga Chaitanya (Tollywood actor Nagarjuna’s son), which managed to make some impact. Now with Ko she is all set to make waves in Kollywood. Needless to say, her mother and aunt Ambika were the divas of south Indian cinema in the 80s.

‘I grew up in Mumbai and away from movies. In fact, I was more interested in completing my business management degree and joining my dad’s business. The acting bug bit me all of a sudden and now, I’m giving it a sincere try,’ she says.

The young lass adds: ‘The best thing that happened to me was getting the heroine’s role in Ko and working with a committed director like K V Anand. He is focused and convinced me with a role that carries the story forward. My character, Renuka, is an investigative journalist in the print media, who, with the help of her photographer (played by Jiiva), gets a scoop which leads to problems.’

Ko is a perfect entertainer, says Karthika Says Karthika, ‘my entering film industry was totally unexpected. There have been offers but my mom refused saying I had to acquire some basic education. When I completed my I2th standard (with distinction) I got an offer to debut with Nagarjuna’s son in a Telugu film Josh. In Ko, I play the role of a matured journalist’.

When K V Anand narr ated the script, the first thing my mom said was that I was lucky to get such a role because these days’ heroines rarely get prominence in a film. I play Renuka, who is bold and ready to face any challenge, she says.

On her experience working in the film, Karthika, says, ‘it was a great learning experience. If there were an award for the best co-star, Jiiva deserves it. He is the first star I worked with but he doesn’t have any of the starry airs. He is so down-to-earth and sincere. Ajmal and I became real friends.’

‘As we proceeded with the shooting I got more involved and realized that it is a total package of drama, action, comedy, romance and a perfect entertainer.’

Thoonga Nagaram Audio Launched Madurai mania sweeps Kollywood. Joining the long list of movies set around the temple city is Thoonga Nagaram. Produced by Dhayanidhi Alagiri, grandson of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and son of DMK’s Madurai strongman and Union Minister M K Alagiri, the movie is all set for release very soon. As a prelude, the audio of the film set to tunes by Sundar C Babu was launched in a gala manner in Chennai. Directed by Gaurav, a former associate of K S Ravikumar, the music launch witnessed people heaping laurels on Madurai, the land that produced many stalwarts in Tamil cinema. The music was released by Lingusamy and received by Gautham Vasudev Menon in the presence of who’s who of Tamil cinema including K V Anand, K S Ravikumar, Sasikumar, Ameer, Samudrakani, and the cast and crew of the film. The lead actors Vimal, Anjali, Nishanth and Bharani were also present. The film has editing by Suresh and cinematography by Vijay Ulaganath, a former assistant to K V Anand. Two songs and a trailor were screened on the occasion. In his address, Ameer said, ‘I just did the voice over for the intro in the film, in the typical Madurai slang. I was very happy to be involved in the project. The city is certainly one that never sleeps and stands for velour, love, emotions and friendship’.Sasikumar pointed out that it’s better not to divide the directors as those from Madurai and other places since they were all a united entity of directors of cinema. On his part, Dhayanidhi said, ‘the entire unit of the film has worked hard to give their best. I am happy with the outcome.’ What’s special? Says Gaurav ‘about 60 musicians from the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra have participated in the background score of Thoonga Nagaram, under the baton of Chief Conductor Yan, known for his work in many Hollywood films.’ The sound recording for the film has been done at Sono Records in the Czech Republic. Incidentally, this is the same studio where A R Rahman recorded the soundtrack of The Warriors of Heaven and Earth. All the songs, composed by Sundar C Babu, have been mixed here, says director Gaurav. The film stars are Vimal of Pasanga fame and Bharani of Nadodigal. ‘First of all, many of the instruments used are unique to this region and lend a different kind of effect. Secondly, the mixing techniques give clarity to the sound produced by every instrument,’ points out Gaurav. WWW.CINEMAMATTERS.COM

No Golden Globe for Rahman It was disappointing news for Rahman fans. The Oscar-Grammy winner lost out the Golden Globe in the Original Score category to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who won for their music in the Social Network. He was up for his second Golden Globe for the Danny Boyle film 127 Hours and had just a day earlier bagged the best original song trophy at the 16th Critics’ Choice Awards for his number If I Rise from the film. The musician who had won his first Golden Globe in 2009 for another of the British director’s film, Slumdog Millionaire, is in the running for his second Oscar with the song, which is collaboration between him and British pop star Dido. Rahman’s music in 127 Hours, starring James Franco as real-life mountain climber Aron Ralston, who cut off his arm to escape from beneath a boulder after being trapped for more than five days, had received good reviews for it’s haunting tracks and wonderful crescendos.’ The musician, known as the ‘Mozart of Madras’ had won two Oscars for his score in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ at the 2009 Oscars, taking the film’s total haul to eight. His song ‘Na Na’ from his Hollywood debut venture Couple’s Retreat, was long listed in the ‘Best Original Song’ category at the 2010 Oscars but failed to win a nomination.
