The Ethereal Fusion of Nature and Abstraction in Tahara Mio’s Art

Japanese Artist born in Tokyo, Tahara Mio’s artwork masterfully blends figurative and abstract elements, creating pieces that are both sensitive and symbolic. Her use of soft, ethereal colors effectively conveys joyful and uplifting emotions, suggesting an intention to provide viewers with a sense of happiness and comfort. The stylization of her figures adds a dreamlike quality, while her dynamic compositions feature intertwining lines that guide the viewer’s eye across the canvas, enhancing the sense of movement and depth.

A notable aspect of Mio’s work is her integration of natural elements, such as birds and fish, inspired by the light filtering through forests and her experiences painting in nature. This connection to the natural world infuses her art with an intuitive, almost mystical quality. The synthesis of abstract and figurative forms invites viewers to explore themes of dreams, fantasy, and reality in a nuanced and engaging manner, creating a bridge between the tangible and intangible aspects of existence.

Tahara Mio’s artistic approach resonates with the work of Paul Klee and Marc Chagall, combining abstraction and figuration to produce rich, symbolic content. Like Klee, Mio’s art merges these elements to create meaningful and constructed pieces, while her sensitive themes reflect the dreamlike quality found in Chagall’s work. Mio’s unique perspective, rooted in Eastern traditions and enriched by Western influences, contributes to her distinctive voice in contemporary art.

“Abstraction is a language that speaks to me. I love languages, and every form of art represents a vehicle of communication. Abstract expressionism reaches deep into the unconscious, allowing paint, color, shapes, patterns, textures, and mixed media to take on forms and evoke thoughts within our imagination. I am fascinated by the capacity of paint to configure into shapes that remind us of organic, microscopic, and molecular formations. Everything we see is made up of tiny atoms or particles.”

“The focus of my work is based on observation of the world mixed with a taste for fantasy. The world changes with time; it could be real, surreal, or abstract depending on what’s happening at a given time. Hailing from a tropical clime has influenced my choice of warm colors. I am sensitive to what’s current around me. Therefore, our environment, humanity, and technology are united to shape a new reality.”

”I found my voice in ethereal, representational work. Using oil, acrylics, and other mediums, my dreamlike paintings reveal their stories to me only upon completion. “The inspiration for my drawing comes from a lifelong love of animals. Living in the beautiful Scottish countryside and growing up with horses, dogs, and cats, I developed an appreciation for their musculature and bone structure, which is reflected in my art. My focus while drawing is to capture the unique character, spirit, and beauty of the animal. I particularly enjoy bringing out the many textures and colors of their coats, as well as the light and expression in their eyes, which is often said to be the window to the soul.”

“Stories of political power and of day-to-day politics do not particularly interest me. There are too many imposed patterns and simplified versions of the truth in play. I find the subjective approach much more fruitful. My pictures are not simple to read. Already in their technical realization, they are too complex for easy access. Whenever I realize that a picture is becoming too harmonious and slick, I intervene and destroy what is pleasing.”

“I tell people I paint ‘God’s mistake’ because my art evolved from a paranormal experience I had in 1995 when I was told, ‘God is Forgiven.’ My work is not about God, religion, or even atheism. Instead, it grapples with trauma relative to innocence and our inescapable mortality. To offer hope, I create images that portray innocence as a friction rather than an identity susceptible to loss. To offer trust, I use the viewer’s gaze as a medium in my work, symbolizing the importance of ‘the witness’ to innocence.”

My work often starts with pencil sketches of iconic scenes and figures, which are then refined digitally to explore various renderings. My art pays tribute to cinema’s intensity and beauty, while also occasionally incorporating floral patterns as backgrounds, exploring other expressive forms in my creative process.”

“Painting for me started as a form of self-therapy and self-expression. My art is a cocktail of emotions and imagination, intertwined with life, love, and music, pouring out onto a willing canvas. Over the past few years, I have involuntarily embarked on a journey. I believe that events and people in my life, amidst all the chaos, are purposeful synchronicities meant to be.

My artistic inspiration now emerges from a variety of sources. It is a fusion and medley of the brilliance of other artists, dreams, colors, memories, musical lyrics, and landscapes. I usually work by laying all the canvases on the table and pouring paint on each in one flow. My brushstrokes move in different directions, agitating the surface and adding dynamism to the work. I finish each piece separately, ensuring its uniqueness. I hope the viewer’s eye is engaged and the mind is entangled in a crescendo of emotions.”

“Understanding the importance of an artist’s process is a mystery to many. The approach from the right brain is an exploration into the imaginings and magic of a world that continuously unfolds. Finding delight in the most delicate and minute to the grandest scale informs the soul’s creativity. My work is a collection of many materials and writings. Often my work is inspired by deeply intrinsic thoughts that come from within or are ignited by certain poets’ words.”

The Last Supper - Handmade Miniature Sculptures in Eye of the Sewing Needle

The height of the micro sculpture is 700 microns (0.7mm). The plates and tumblers on the table were made of 24 carats gold. Plates are 50 microns width and cups are 100 microns height.

“25 years ago, I discovered my passion for micro sculpture. Creating such intricate and immersive sculptures require precision and can only be fully appreciated under a microscope. THE LAST SUPPER in Eye of the Needle, in which Jesus Christ breaks the bread with the 12 disciples. It also portrays the reactions of each apostle when Jesus said one of them would betray him. The height of the micro sculpture is 700 microns (0.7mm). I spent around six to eight hours per day over five months to finish the micro sculpture.”

Kaeko Mizutani explores how art allows humanity to sublimate the darker emotions—anger, jealousy, and sadness—into beauty. She contemplates how we navigate the inevitable emotional turbulence of life, especially when faced with absurdity. Her work reflects an intimate connection with the essential forces of life, particularly Eros, and the surrounding creatures that inspire her. Mizutani believes it is the artist’s fate to transform inner turmoil into an alluring yet mysterious world, presenting a suspiciously beautiful vision through her art. Her creative process offers a profound commentary on the human condition and emotional transformation.

“A relationship between wild animals and beautiful, somewhat mythical women is a theme that has fascinated me since I was a child. I love exploring it in my paintings with emphasis on different aspects, latent ferocity, beauty, protection to name a few. Themes are sparked by the faces of certain animals or women and I work out the world on canvas. A poem often comes to mind while working through them and each of these has a short one which sits with it.”

“Objects taken out of their context and framed in a photograph change meaning, becoming something else for the imagination. Everything can be seen differently from what it is.”

The photographs are part of the “La Porta di Traverso” book currently set for publication by the artist duo, G. Joia and OpticalEmotions. The project tells of a journey into the depths of the mind up to the exteriority of the body, through the eye of a therapist, G. Joia, with a passion for photography, and the eye of a photographer, OpticalEmotions, with a passion for portraiture, both with their gaze turned towards a cross-section of contemporary society.

“The photographic comparison between the body and an object aims at symbolic research between what is inside and outside of us, the emotional and evocative connection between us and our objects and nature, sensuality, erotic and vital charge, the sense and suffering inherent in existing, and the redemption of living. In the book, through the stories of stories, we discuss perversion, pain, signs, pleasure, conscious, unconscious, said, unsaid, art, alchemy, and much more. The photographs have the ambition to guide reading, reflection, and imagination beyond the image and words, undermining to obtain an immediate emotional reaction, which could change by questioning who we are deep down, beyond the surface of the stories written on our skin.”

“My oil paintings focus on portraits, including those of animals. I strive to capture emotions through colors, immersing myself in the stories of my subjects as I paint. I find that listening to stories while painting allows me to relive them on canvas, making portraits particularly compelling. Fredi Cohen: Healing & Harmonizing Society through Art

Fredi Cohen’s latest body of work, encapsulated in her “Visual Orchestra” series, embodies a profound yearning for societal healing, harmony, and balance. Her art is driven by the belief that blending diverse cultural and ideological perspectives and appreciating and integrating the unique characteristics of each of us will result in us all living in a thriving harmonious, healed world. Cohen’s creative approach integrates a wide array of materials and techniques, including sculpture, drawing, painting, stained glass, light, and various paper surface texturing and printing techniques, to symbolize the harmonious coexistence she envisions. By mixing these seemingly disparate elements in her art, Cohen creates a visual metaphor for the acceptance and appreciation of harmonizing our differences and having a wonderful time in the process.

In her “Visual Orchestra” series, Cohen challenges herself to combine artistic mediums that, at first glance, appear incompatible. This process mirrors her desire for a harmonious society where varied viewpoints come together to form a cohesive whole. The use of traditional techniques alongside modern materials illustrates her commitment to exploring and synthesizing different artistic practices. The result is a body of work that not only visually captivates but also serves as a powerful metaphor for appreciating the unique characteristics that each of us contributes to co-creating a vibrant, peaceful, harmonious societal unity.

Cohen’s artistic philosophy emphasizes the importance of restoring a Yin Yang balance in both personal well-being and global harmony. By engaging with her work, viewers are invited to join her in a journey toward peace and appreciation of what we each contribute to a happier world, experiencing firsthand the richness that emerges from embracing and valuing the unique characteristics of blending each of our differences, like a Visual Orchestra Symphony having a wonderful time playing together.
