DECEMBER 2024
Director
A few words from Neill Catton, CIS Managing
Triple celebrations, our fantastic CIS Awards, moving up to number 6 in the 2024 Infologue rankings and our Christmas Edition Newsletter! It has been a relatively calm quarter regarding new business; however, contracts are not more iconic than the National Gallery. We are very proud to safeguard the nation’s treasures and look forward to extending our reach in the Cultural sector. While the Annual Awards rightly takes centre stage, I am very impressed by the support that CIS Colleagues have given to such worthy initiatives, and the journey from women-only assessment days to Operation Vigilant shows a genuine 365-degree commitment to championing Women.
I cannot believe how fast this year has gone. What I can believe, though, is that 2025 is going to be something special, with new appointments, unique initiatives, and CIS Colleagues leading the way! I would like to thank you all for your hard work and professionalism over the past 12 months. Enjoy a peaceful festive period, and lets look forward to a fantastic year ahead!

FEMALE ASSESSMENT DAY
On the 17th of October the Resourcing Team held two assessment day sessions dedicated for women only. This was an extremely successful day with 19 job offers being made for some of the following Operational Response area’s; FoH Elect, 40 Leadenhall, 78 St James’s Street, Aldgate Tower, and The National Gallery.
Georgina Martin our Talent Resourcing Manager organised the sessions and was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and engagement of everyone involved. Georgina said “This innovative assessment environment supports and encourages individuals to showcase their skills, experience and knowledge.”
SOCIAL VALUES RECRUITMENT
London Borough of Lewisham Job Fair
On 28th of November the Resourcing Team, Shelby Martin and Mafalda Oliveira, attended a 50+ jobs fair in partnership with DWP at Lewisham College.
This was a busy and productive event allowing us to promote the opportunities available within the industry and company.
It was a pleasure to attend another event at Lewisham College, enabling us the opportunity to meet people of all ages and backgrounds. It was interesting to listen to everyones career stories and life situations whilst offering them a new perspective about the security industry.
Social Values Company – ASB Security Ltd
CIS have recently partnered with ASB Security Limited, providing us access to resources through their DWP contract. ASB support people who are not currently in eduaction, employment or training into the workplace.
On Thursday 5th of December, the resourcing team, Ben Foster and Tudor Williams hosted an interview assessment day on their premises to 36 SIA licenced individuals, with over half securing positions or going forward with second interviews.
We look forward to supporting new talent and continuing to grow this collaboration.
LAUNCH GROUP
Darcie Alabaster and Wayne Nye Jones have been working with the Launch Group. The Launch Group are one of our many social value providers who raise awareness of opportunities the security sector has available. As part of the collaboration with Ealing Broadway Shopping Centre, 12 individuals have been offered employment with CIS Security and will form part of Wayne Nye Jones response team.
David Cooke from the launch group said;
“I wanted to take a moment to express our sincere gratitude for the support CIS has provided to our recent community-focused initiative, at Ealing Broadway. Wayne and Darcie have been instrumental in helping us drive this forward. In particular, Wayne’s presentation to the group was brilliant. It provided valuable insights and motivation that left a lasting impression on everyone involved. His engagement really helped to inspire confidence and clarify the opportunities available through CIS.
On a wider note, we’ve also thoroughly enjoyed working with CIS on other programmes in the wider London area, such as at Regent’s Place and Brookfield Properties. These collaborations have been instrumental in supporting communities and driving positive change, and we value the strong relationship we’ve built.”
SCHOOL JOB FAIR
Last month, CIS attended the Beth’s Grammar School Jobs Fair!
It was truly inspiring for us to connect with a diverse group of enthusiastic sixth-formers exploring apprenticeships as a potential career path. This event provided a great opportunity to showcase what makes CIS Security such a supportive and dynamic environment for growth and to highlight our innovative contributions to the security industry through our work across a range of sectors.
Thank you to everyone who stopped by our stand; we enjoyed answering your questions and explaining how CIS Security can be part of your future journey!
MY JOURNEY SO FAR
When did you start working for CIS?
I started working for CIS in April 2022.
Tell us about your transition from a Security Officer to an Assistant Security Manager?
So, I started as a Security Officer at Bow Bells House. I spent the first six months learning the role, alongside the team and my supervisor, Abraham. I began to work closely with my manager at the time, Dean James; and asked for more responsibility and opportunities to upskill and train as I knew I wanted more for myself. I applied for the Leadership Programme whilst there, getting accepted. However, due to being an officer, I knew that I needed an environment that would enable me to lead and put what I’m learning to use, so I took the leap and applied to be a Supervisor at Warwick Court.
LEAH WILLIAMS ASSISTANT
SECURITY MANAGER
I soaked up a bunch of knowledge, drive and motivation - learning from leaders around me within my team including Peter Faram, Jonathan Dower as well as Tracy Plant, Phil Thomas to name a few and ultimately, I continued to build the driving force I’ve had from a young age. Knowing my capabilities, believing in myself and what I want to achieve within the security industry - I spent a year before beginning to apply for manager positions. You can never stop learning, and working from an officer to being an assistant security manager is only the beginning.
Tell us about your experience on the Leadership Programme?
The Leadership Programme was a transformative period in my life. I learned a lot about what is required to be an actual leader. Some may not know that being a leader compared to a boss has its differences. It was a testing and trying 12 months, at times not knowing if I had the capacity to carry on, but it was a test of my resilience, and an opportunity to learn more about myself, my skills, my abilities. I came out to the other side, stronger, more confident and ready to conquer, ready to lead. It was an opportunity that I’m grateful to have had, and I’d definitely do it again. (Some might call me crazy, but I love a challenge).
What
do you enjoy about working for
CIS?
The community. Everyone is committed to growth, to developing themselves and being the best version of themselves every day.
We thrive in passion, determination and leadership across the whole company.
Why would you recommend the Security Industry as a career for women?
I’d recommend the Security Industry as a career for women as it’s an industry that will enable you to be a catalyst of change. Security is an industry that is a diverse, growing and rewarding field that offers a range of opportunities for both personal and professional growth. We have an integral role to play in enhancing safety and security in a world that becomes increasingly complex day by day. In such a male dominated industry, we can be the change we want to see. We can inspire generations and make an impact for years to come, taking the lead in shaping policies, and practices that influence organisations and communities alike. Join the trailblazers of history!
03. COMPANY AWARDS & PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS
SECURITY AWARDS FOR LEWISHAM & GREENWICH NHS TRUST
The Security teams across University Hospital Lewisham and Queen Elizabeth Hospital Woolwich were voted as winners of the Partners award at this year’s L&GNHS Trust awards night. The customer stated;

This might look like comfort to distressed individuals, or a friendly chat with a regular visitor. But the team do even more beyond their regular duties: they have conducted safety drills, violence and aggression workshops and awareness campaigns within the hospitals, educating colleagues and visitors.”

LIVING WAGE WEEK
We proudly celebrated Living Wage Week at CIS, showing our commitment to fair pay for all. At Head Office, we kicked things off with an information session, enjoyed a Living Wage quiz, and had plenty of time for discussions and networking. Living Wage Week was a fantastic chance to reaffirm our values!
At CIS, we believe in promoting the real Living Wage, one contract at a time, to help drive up standards in the security industry.
With 12.9% of employees across the UK still being paid below the real Living Wage, we are proud to be a Recognised Service Provider, working with the Living Wage Foundation. We also sit on the Service Provision Action Strand of the Making London a Living Wage City campaign, working to put £635m of wages back into the pockets of low-wage workers in London.
The Living Wage event at Shakespeare’s Globe was truly inspiring. We heard from many leaders in London’s communities about their experiences of low pay and insecure work and their campaigns for change.
Let us continue to push for fair pay, share inspiring stories, and help shape the future of work.

PAY YOUR PENSION SOME ATTENTION!
The “Pension Attention” campaign is a UK government initiative aimed at encouraging people to actively engage with their pensions to ensure financial security in later life. With rising prices and falling living standards it’s never been more important to raise awareness about the significance of regularly reviewing your pension savings. Employers play a key role in helping colleagues with their financial wellbeing, providing the foundations for the financial stability in retirement.
Saving into a workplace pension comes with several benefits. Here are the main points the campaign emphasises:
Employer Contributions
Take advantage of employer contributions – this is essentially “free money” that can significantly boost your retirement savings.
Tax Relief
Pension contributions benefit from government tax relief. This means that for every contribution you make, the government adds a percentage based on your tax bracket.
For example, if you are a basic rate taxpayer and you contribute £100, it only cost you £80, as the government adds £20 (20% tax relief), resulting in a total of £100 going into your pension pot.
Growth Over Time
The money you save in your pension has the potential to grow, thanks to investment returns. It’s vital to start contributing early and save consistently.
Pension Consolidation
Reviewing and consolidating pensions from different jobs can help keep track of savings and potentially reduce fees.
Hassle-Free And Flexible
With automatic deductions from your salary, saving for retirement becomes effortless. Pension freedoms give the individual choice of how and when to access their pension savings from the age of 55.
Plan For The Future You Want
Using tools like PLSA Retirement Living Standards, the campaign encourages people to think about the lifestyle they want in retirement and plan accordingly.
Reconnect with your pension by visiting the Standard Life app today! With 24/7 access, you can stay up to date on your contributions, investment balance, and growth. The app’s range of management tools allows you to estimate your retirement income, update your personal details, select beneficiaries or transfer other pensions in, among other features. By actively managing your Standard Life pension, you stay in control of your financial planning and can make proactive decisions for a more secure future.
For more information about the campaign please visit: www.pensionattention.co.uk
EMPLOYERS’ INITIATIVE ON DOMESTIC ABUSE
CIS are proud to be a members of the Employers’ Initiative on Domestic Abuse and are fully engaged and committed to creating an environment where people can seek help and support. We had the honour of hosting a dinner for their key partners at EIDA member the Hawksmoor in support of EIDA. This was a very important event to raise awareness of domestic abuse amongst employers and to support them to implement effective workplace domestic abuse policies.
CIS continue to raise awareness providing inspirational leadership led by Amanda McCloskey, Director of Sales and Marketing.
UNITED STATES CHIEFS OF POLICE VISIT
In support of our company vision around global recognition we recently had the honour of hosting a delegation from the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police. Everyone agreed that partnership working and sharing best practice around safety and security is so important and holds no boundaries.
During the presentation we had the opportunity to discuss and explore the mechanics of training, officer support, policing and security partnerships across London. It was evident from listening to conversations and feedback received that the delegation was highly impressed by the level of training our security officers receive and how professional we are as a business. A special thanks to MAPP, London Bridge City for hosting and joining us on the day.
CIS OP VIGILANT INITIATIVE
The importance of the night-time economy and the safety and security of those within this is vital. City of London Police (CoLP) operations REFRAME, UNIFY and VIGILANT make a key element to ensuring the integrity of the city.
These all bolster the underlying prevention of ‘Violence Against Women and Girls’ and those that are vulnerable to potential hostiles while enjoying the attractions across the city. Our night security teams make a massive difference, demonstrating their presence, engaging with and reassuring those in the city, reporting incidents and suspicions to the CoLP.
CIS Security Limited support Safe Havens and work with all our partners across the Corporation of London, CoLP, local BID’s our customers and our security industry partners. We encourage all those in the city to approach the Safe Haven locations, speak to identifiable security officers, Taxi Marshalls, and City Pastors to seek support where needed.
DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION WORKSHOP
On Wednesday 16th October, Key Account Director, Kieron Nunney and his team took part in an Equally Yours™

POPPY APPEAL
CIS are proud to support the Royal British Legion It has been an honour and privilege being part of Poppy Appeal collections across the UK. We would like to thank all the volunteers who took part.
GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND AT PATERNOSTER SQUARE
Event Organiser Peter Faram MSyl MCMI - Head of Security, who was recently appointed as Savills Head of Security at Kingscross Estate stated;
“2024 has been my official year as the St Paul’s Poppy Organiser. Allowing Paternoster Square Estate to expand collecting locations to raise funds for the Royal British Legion.
We all hoped we would raise more than the £12,000 last November. I received the 2024 final total yesterday. As a collective team of volunteers from numerous businesses including, Savills CIS Security Limited LSEG (London Stock Exchange Group) Transport for London City of London Corporation City of London Police - I’m proud to announce we have raised £18,641.77.
From November 2023 to date, £35,641.77 has been raised for this amazing charity. What an achievement and I’m proud to have collaborated with some amazing people and veterans.
Thank you to all volunteers who have supported myself and Paternoster over the past 12 months. Thank you to Kieron Nunney, Jonathan Dower, Lucie Frater, and Teena Gill for your continued support. What a great way to end the year.”
ANDREW GOUGH - SUPPORTING THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION
“Myself and James Maynard had the privilege of volunteering for the Royal British Legion.
The generosity and support of everyone travelling through Liverpool Street Station was unbelievable. We see so many bad news stories that it’s easy to forget how good the majority of humanity is, yesterday reminded me of this. The atmosphere throughout the station was incredible with both civilian veterans and serving military volunteers. We were able to raise a fantastic amount of money for such a worthy cause.
Thank you to CIS and CBRE for giving us the opportunity to do this and providing us with volunteering days. This shows a real commitment with supporting their staff.”
Andrew Gough - Security Manager
A HUGE WELL DONE TO ANDREW GOUGH AND HIS TEAM
CIS POPPY APPEAL IN MANCHESTER
“So the poppy appeal for Manchester was requested a number of months ago. At a monthly meeting with Ashdown Phillips (AP) our customer there Julie Gunther and Laura Chick-Comeford asked is there anything we can do to support the RBL. AP usually sell poppies on site but without a shop needed assistance. I made contact with the Manchester branch of RBL and spoke with Scott Pringle. We were advised they didn’t have resources to do a stall for the building. They could supply stock but that’s all. I asked if I ran a stall would that be accepted to which Scott said yes we could set up on behalf of the RBL.
I accepted Scott’s offer and the items were delivered to site. We ran the stall one day per week for several weeks. Donations were generous to say the least and staff and visitors were supportive to the collection. Donations were given in 2 ways firstly as cash directly into collection pots, the other via payment apps after scanning a QR code. Donations by apps raising a considerable amount more than cash donations.”
Barry Thompson Regional Account Manager
“During the collections the Mayor of Manchester Andy Burnham stopped off a couple of times for a chat thanking us for our support, asking where I was from and thanking us for doing a stall on the building’s behalf. Andy also offered his time to sell poppies. He stated the public support for the appeal has been fantastic with card readers and cash apps ringing in with donations. Andy kindly took the time to have a photo with us to say thank you.
For myself, donating some of my time to sell poppies is an honour, remembrance is a time all branches of the armed forces come together to respect all that served. Not just for the forces, it is a time to remember family members and friends that did not make it home from wars and conflicts paying the ultimate sacrifice so we can live freely.”
A HUGE WELL DONE BARRY!
Our CIS colleagues gathered and took part in the 2 minute silence near our head office at the Lewisham war memorial
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old, Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.
A huge thank you to our Company Trainer, Lee Leyland and Regional Account Manager, Barry Thompson.
CYBER SECURITY & SAFETY EVENT
Last month, CIS participated in Cyber, Security & Safety events organised by The CyberHub Trust.
Students from Milton Keynes College/South Central Institute of Technology showcased their interests in the next generation of cutting-edge security technology, spending time networking with industry leaders, learning more about the security sector.
Ray Marskell MSyl stated:
“Thank you to The CyberHub Trust for inviting us to participate in such a great initiative. The “Cyber, Security & Safety” event brought together leading names from across the industry to help inspire the next generation of safety and security professionals. As we know, the security sector is diverse and full of opportunities, so spending time with students and discussing what the industry has to offer was rewarding and exciting in equal measures.”
WOMEN’S SAFETY EVENT
To mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and reaffirm our ongoing support for the White Ribbon campaign, The Gilbert was honoured to host a compelling event in collaboration with The Old Street District Partnership, CIS Security Limited and TrueLayer, who generously provided the venue for this vital discussion. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the critical work still needed to eliminate violence against women and girls. By standing together, we can create a future of safety, dignity, and equality for all.
John Salthouse, Security Manager for The Gilbert, said the event featured an inspiring presentation and an engaging Q&A session with Superintendent Brittany Clarke of the MET Police Hackney and Chief Inspector Caroline Hay MBE of the City of London Police. Together, they provided critical insights into the urgent need to address violence against women and girls, sharing actionable strategies and resources.
We had expert perspectives from Superintendent Clarke and Chief Inspector Hay, as they drew from their extensive experience, focusing on prevention efforts, timely reporting, and survivor support. Initiatives discussed and explored included Project Vigilant,
Active Bystanders, Ask For Angela, WAVE, Safe Haven App and Taxi Marshals, aimed at safeguarding the night-time economy and providing advice on addressing drink spiking, emphasising the availability of test kits and the importance of early reporting. Overall, highlighting collaborative efforts, the event underscored the critical role of partnerships between authorities, businesses, and the community in preventing gender-based violence.
If you or someone you know is experiencing violence, help is available. Please reach out to local authorities or trusted organisations for support. If faced with these potential situations of concern, highlight your nearest security professional or the police. Seek refuge in a shop, or if you see someone, ask the person if they are okay and need help. If you believe it is an emergency, please call 999 immediately.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Sergeant Rafi Joney from MET Police Hackney & City of London Police for their contribution and TrueLayer for hosting this meaningful event. These partnerships demonstrate the collective strength needed to drive awareness and inspire change.
COUNTER TERRORISM SUMMIT 2024
Earlier this month, CIS was proud to be the headline sponsor at the Counter Terrorism Summit - a partnership event between the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and the Department for Business and Trade (DBT).
The purpose of the event was to:
f Increase awareness and understanding of the latest trends and developments in counter-terrorism amongst partner organisations, enabling them to make more informed decisions and policies in this area.
f To build relationships and networks between partner organisations, enhancing coordination and collaboration in their efforts to prepare for and mitigate against the effects of terrorist events and other crimes, leading to more effective and efficient responses.
Alistair Sutherland Deputy Chief Constable with the British Transport Police, covered subjects such as the response, enquiry, and learnings from the awful events at Manchester Arena. Figen Murray OBE updated us on her journey and the work to pass The Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill 2024. HMRC provided input on the value of emergency trauma packs, and valuable insights were provided from the National Counter Terrorism Security Office (NaCTSO) and the National Disruptive Effects Unit, focusing on the importance of security-minded communications.
Ray Marskell MSyl CIS’s Director of Risk and Intelligence, said,
“CIS Security were proud to sponsor and support such an important event in partnership with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Department for Business and Trade. Working in partnership is core to all we do, and we wanted to be part of bringing all these organisations and people together for the benefit of our communities. The summit was a great success with so much important information and messaging shared for safety and security across the UK”.

ALDGATE TOWER ACCESS CONTROL UPGRADE
We recently partnered with Definitive Security Solutions to successfully upgrade the existing Sateon access control system at Aldgate Tower to a modern Grosvenor Janus C4 system. By utilising the existing cabling, we ensured the project stayed within budget without compromising quality.
Before commencing the work, we developed a clear project plan outlining key milestones and providing accurate dates for each step of the process, working systematically floor by floor. Additionally, we conducted a detailed intrusive survey. This structured approach ensured the project remained on track and met the customer’s expectations.
Throughout the project, we held regular update meetings with the customer and site manager to foresee any issues and ensure a seamless transition between the two systems.
Following the successful upgrade, we have installed a new panic alarm system, expanded CCTV coverage, and taken over the maintenance responsibilities for CCTV, access control, intercom, and intruder alarm systems at Aldgate Tower.
REMOTE
MONITORING INSTALLATION AT 17 OLD PARK LANE
We recently completed setup of a 9 camera CCTV reactive remote monitoring service at 17 Old Park Lane.
CIS SOC already provides remote monitoring for the building’s intruder alarm system; this is now supported and enhanced by the CCTV reactive remote monitoring service. Upon activation of the intruder alarm, officers in the CIS SOC will be able to remotely view the cameras and respond accordingly.

CAN PPE BE OVER-USED IN THE WORKPLACE?
Personal protective equipment (PPE) serves as a critical safeguard against hazards, but some-times it is overused in the workplace. Can you reduce reliance on PPE while maintaining a safe and secure workplace for all?

The issue of excessive PPE usage
In many workplaces, the tendency to over-rely on personal protective equipment (PPE) may stem from several factors. Firstly, a lack of comprehensive risk assessments and hazard controls could lead to a default strategy of solely depending on PPE for protection. Additionally, misinterpretation of safety regulations or a general culture of prioritising it over other preventive measures might contribute to the overuse of protective gear.
Inadequate training programmes could result in workers using PPE as the primary safety measure due to a lack of understanding of alternative control methods.
WHY PPE IS USED
It’s important to remember that PPE should only be used as a last line of defence against a hazard, after applying the hierarchy of controls, e.g. elimination, substitution, engineering controls and administrative controls. Tip. Other control measures are often more effective at reducing or eliminating hazards compared to relying solely on PPE, and in most cases these can save you money in the long term. For example, installing machine guards will be a one-time expense and will collectively provide a higher level of protection for all workers.
DRAWBACKS TO PPE USE
If you do have to use PPE, regulations mandate employers to provide suitable equipment to those exposed to workplace hazards. Failure to meet these legal requirements can lead to penalties or legal liabilities for the company. Other negative connotations associated with PPE include:
f It can be a needless expense and a warning sign of an under-developed safety culture
f Being reliant on colleague behaviour to ensure it is being worn, stored and replaced correctly
f It can be uncomfortable, restrict movement, or be perceived as a hassle
f It can be a recurring cost due to maintenance, replacement, and training expenses
f It can be perceived as a lazy way to overcome a hazard, denting staff confidence in you.
SAFELY REDUCING PPE DEPENDENCY
To address the issue of excessive PPE, conduct thorough risk assessments to identify hazards and implement engineering controls. Ensure that the correct PPE is selected. When you get this right, colleagues are more likely to understand its necessity and importance in protecting them from identified risks. Tip. Use our Flow Chart - PPE Selection to guide your decision making (see The next step).
Provide comprehensive training on hazards, control measures and safe work practices regarding the importance of using PPE judiciously and as a last resort. Tip. Refreshing your staff will underpin when PPE should be used and why, and will reduce the over-wearing of it. To use our Safety Briefing - PPE , see The next step.
Tip. Establishing clear safety protocols and guidelines, coupled with regular monitoring and evaluation of safety practices, can help create a culture of safety that emphasises proactive hazard management rather than reactive PPE usage.
Overuse of PPE can sometimes mask underlying hazards and weaknesses in safety practices. By addressing the root causes of excessive PPE usage, such as inadequate risk assessments and lack of awareness, you can effectively reduce the dependency on it, potentially saving money and driving your safety culture forward.

Introduction Safety Briefing - PPE
This briefing addresses the key risks and control measures associated with using personal protective equipment (PPE) in the workplace. Its aim is to ensure that all staff are fully aware of potential risks associated with incorrect use or incorrect PPE and what they should do to minimise the risk to themselves and others.
Hazards
• PPE not suitable to protect against hazard.
• PPE worn or damaged.
• Non-company issued PPE.
The following are potential incidents/ill health that could occur if hazard is left uncontrolled:
• Ill health, such as respiratory problems.
• Physical damage, such as eye injury, thermal burns, etc.
Control measures
• PPE to be issued to all staff members who may be at risk, regardless of employment status.
• Risk assessments to determine other control measures as a priority. PPE to be used as a last resort.
• PPE to be suitable for the residual risk and compatible with other equipment.
• Wearing of PPE to be supervised to ensure it is being worn and worn correctly.
How
you can reduce the risk
• Wear the PPE in accordance with your training.
• Report any wear and tear and request replacement PPE if damaged.
Newsletter
• Do not interfere with any PPE provided, e.g. cut straps off, remove padding, etc. as this will impact tits efficacy.
• Store your PPE in a safe environment, e.g. dry, moderate temperature, etc.
Key points
• You are responsible for ensuring the condition of your PPE and replacing it when damaged.
• If PPE is provided it means the hazard has not been controlled by other means so you must wear it in accordance with your training and not be tempted to “just do a task” without your issued PPE.
• The Company will replace PPE when notified by the user that the existing equipment is damaged.
