CREATING WORKPLACE OPPORTUNITIES IN PARTNERSHIP WITH UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON (UCL)
Department of Security and Crime Science
“We are excited to commence with what we hope will be a long-term partnership with UCL. I have been fortunate to see firsthand the dedication and commitment that the students place on safety and security, and I see this as a great opportunity for all involved. Our primary objective is to give students an insight into the world of security and see the diversity of opportunities within the sector. In addition, we see real value in adding a layer of academic rigour to the way we deliver service excellence to our customers, colleagues, and communities alike”.
Work placement experience is vital in bridging the gap between academic learning and the professional world. CIS is working with UCL’s Department of Security and Crime Science, offering students a fantastic opportunity to gain hands-on experience and insights into the dynamic landscape of the security industry.
Today, we welcomed Eliana Woosnam, who is studying for a Security and Crime Science Degree at UCL, to undertake an internship, working with Ray Marskell, MSyl, Director of Risk and Intelligence and CIS’s in-house intelligence team.
This partnership provides students with valuable practical experience and industry insights and fosters long-term collaboration between UCL and CIS Security. Together, we can develop industry-ready graduates who are versatile, problem-solving crime scientists equipped with a variety of interdisciplinary quantitative, qualitative, and technical skills that they have learned in the context of real-world applications, laying a solid foundation for future collaborations and projects.
CIS Security Limited would like to congratulate Senior Onboarding Co-Ordinator Grace Feeney on completing her Business Admin Apprenticeship Qualification. Grace joined the Onboarding team immediately after receiving her A-level results and has since become an invaluable member of the CIS team.
Grace said,
“Since I joined CIS as an Apprentice after completing school, I have experienced significant career progression. While at CIS Security, I have been entrusted with various responsibilities that have facilitated my professional development. My manager, Davina Sawyer, has supported and mentored me during this journey. As a young professional starting my career, I initially faced challenges and uncertainty; however, I have successfully grown into my role and implemented new processes for the team.
I am excited about the opportunities at CIS Security and look forward to what the future has in store for me.”
Well done Grace! Your passion and determination always shines throughyour success is well-deserved!
EY WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAMME
CIS proudly provides mentoring opportunities for the EY Work Experience Programme!
For the second year running, we have offered students enrolled in the EY Foundation Secure Futures Programme the opportunity to shadow one of our Account Managers, Callum Hobbs.

Over the three-day work experience period, Ayodeji Agbi and Cheyian Hedaux were first introduced to CIS, where they learned about our vision, what we do, our culture, and our career development opportunities. Following this, they visited some key customers within the City of London’s square mile. Ayo and Cheyian were introduced to the importance of high service standards and excellent customer engagement.
Callum said, “The three days with Ayo and Cheyian showcased their dedication, passion, and readiness to enter the working world. It was a pleasure to host them, and I look forward to further supporting young people in this industry.”
We wish Ayo and Cheyian all the very best with their journey into the world of work.
LEO GRIMES
Sales & Marketing Work Experience
Our Resourcing Team have arranged some great work experience placements for students to join CIS.
A huge thank you to the Sales and Marketing team for taking the time out of your busy schedules and teaching our work experience students about CIS and the Security Industry we operate in.
“I attend St Dominic’s sixth form college, and I was really interested in working with CIS because I am passionate about sales and helping people find the right solutions for their needs. I enjoy talking to people, and showing them how a product or service can benefit them.
RAMNIK MATTOO IT WORK EXPERIENCE
I worked closely with the sales and marketing teams and had multiple potential customers or upcoming tenders I was able to research.
The best thing about CIS was that I was able to find out more about one of London’s Iconic tall buildings. Not only was I able to see it everyday on my commute to the office but was able to see answers for the Request for Proposal but was able to discover more about the London skyline.
My time at CIS gave me an insight into the selling process. I learnt the process of bidding, research and summarising which was important as customers will give strict character limits on their Request for Proposal.
While I haven’t fully decided on my career path yet, I believe that gaining exposure and experience in the security industry will help me make a more informed choice in the future”.

AMIRAH MYRIE Sales & Marketing Work Experience
In August, Olivia Cosgrove Slater completed a work experience placement with our Sales and Marketing Team, during this time Olivia demonstrated great multi tasking skills as she was still revising for her upcoming exams and learning about CIS and our social media stratagies.
“My name is Olivia Cosgrove Slater, I am 15 years old and a year 10 student at EGA school (Elizabeth Garret Anderson). This year I completed 2 of my GCSE’s already because my school does them early, the two GCSE’s that I completed were my option Geography and sociology. I am not 100% sure what I want to do in the future, or whether I would want to continue to even go to college or university. I would like to do an apprenticeship at CIS, most likely in marketing. I have really enjoyed the work experience and I feel that this is something I may want to do in the future.
My time in CIS sales and marketing, has been great I have loved every bit of it, it has been a very big learning curve for me and an amazing opportunity. I enjoyed the site visit and creating graphic’s forsocial media posts. I was set a range of different marketing tasks to complete including joing Teams meetings to learn more about marketing and the business as a whole.
The staff have been really friendly, helpful and lovely”.
Olivia Cosgrove Slater
My name is Amirah Myrie, I am currently a year 12 student studying business, geography and sociology at Langley Park school for girls. After Sixth Form, I would like to do an apprenticeship rather than the traditional approach of going to university as I feel that that would be more beneficial to me in the future as I would already have industry experience.
I am not completely decided on what exactly it is that would like to do when I finish education, but I am leaning towards a career in marketing, this is because having done business studies (at both A-level and GCSE) and having done my own research, marketing is what has always stuck out to me.
Throughout my time in the sales and marketing department at CIS Security this week, I have gained valuable insight and experience into corporate life. From getting to design a graphic for Women’s Equality Day, taking on research tasks about CIS and their competitors, going on a site visit to a building that the company work on and getting to go to the top floors and enjoy the views of The City London.
It was great being able to meet the team and sitting in on company meetings which has enabled me to get a better understanding on how the Sale and Marketing Industry works.
This has been an incredibly exciting week, and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here. The whole experience has been amazing, and I feel that I have learnt a lot.

PAY YOUR PENSION SOME ATTENTION!
The “Pension Attention” campaign is a UK government initiative aimed at encouraging people to actively engage with their pensions to ensure financial security in later life. With rising prices and falling living standards it’s never been more important to raise awareness about the significance of regularly reviewing your pension savings. Employers play a key role in helping colleagues with their financial wellbeing, providing the foundations for the financial stability in retirement.
Saving into a workplace pension comes with several benefits. Here are the main points the campaign emphasises:
Employer Contributions
Take advantage of employer contributions – this is essentially “free money” that can significantly boost your retirement savings.
Tax Relief
Pension contributions benefit from government tax relief. This means that for every contribution you make, the government adds a percentage based on your tax bracket.
For example, if you are a basic rate taxpayer and you contribute £100, it only cost you £80, as the government adds £20 (20% tax relief), resulting in a total of £100 going into your pension pot.
Growth Over Time
The money you save in your pension has the potential to grow, thanks to investment returns. It’s vital to start contributing early and save consistently.
Pension Consolidation
Reviewing and consolidating pensions from different jobs can help keep track of savings and potentially reduce fees.
Hassle-Free And Flexible
With automatic deductions from your salary, saving for retirement becomes effortless. Pension freedoms give the individual choice of how and when to access their pension savings from the age of 55.
Plan For The Future You Want
Using tools like PLSA Retirement Living Standards, the campaign encourages people to think about the lifestyle they want in retirement and plan accordingly.
Reconnect with your pension by visiting the Standard Life app today! With 24/7 access, you can stay up to date on your contributions, investment balance, and growth. The app’s range of management tools allows you to estimate your retirement income, update your personal details, select beneficiaries or transfer other pensions in, among other features. By actively managing your Standard Life pension, you stay in control of your financial planning and can make proactive decisions for more secure future.
For more information about the campaign please visit: www.pensionattention.co.uk
PWC MANAGEMENT INDUCTION
A HUGE welcome to PwC Management! On Thursday 15th of August CIS hosted a welcome management induction to the team at PWC following their successful TUPE transfer - with Security Operations Managers, David Phee, Adam Skillen and Simon Davis, and Deputy Operations Manager, Pete McMichael, in attendance.
The day consisted of the managers attending both Head Office and our London Office, meeting each department within the company allowing them to understand the in-house support available to them and the processes to follow.
This was an extremely successful day with all managers enjoying meeting the wide CIS team. We all look forward to working with you going forward!
Adam Skillen, Security Operation Manager, Belfast stated.
“I found the managers induction really useful to gain insight into the various departments that CIS have their stakeholders and offerings they can deliver. It was also fantastic to put faces to names and feel included into the firm. Really appreciate all the effort that went into arranging this.”
David Phee, Security Operation Manager, Embankment stated.
“The manager’s induction was our first chance to meet the CIS team fully and live in person which is always so much better than online. Overall, the day was super productive. Being able to meet the different departments of CIS and hearing how they can assist us in delivering a better service to PwC will be invaluable in the weeks and months ahead.”

ANNUAL SUMMER EVENT AT HARBOUR EXCHANGE
On the 31st July 2024, Amanda McCloskey, Sales & Marketing Director, Sammy Harrington, Key Account Director, and Adnaan Butt, Account Manager, attended the annual summer get-together hosted by Colliers. Their annual summer get-together for their occupiers and Service Partners at Harbour Exchange was a great success.
The get-together, aptly named Tropical Beats, We had an early opportunity to meet with their Service Partner peers as well as the chance to meet many of the occupiers of Harbour Exchange.
The occasion was blessed with fantastic weather; very fitting as a lively steel band provided entertainment, cocktails were mixed, and delicious jerk chicken was served!
Our customer, Anna O’Donnell shared her gratitude following the event for the Security Team’s efforts in ensuring everyone was kept safe, had their bellies filled and thirst quenched. Anna singled out Security Officer Graham Hunnable for his unwavering support on the day.
Our focus now turns to their Winter get-together, Jungle Ball, scheduled to take place in December.

The importance of the nighttime economy and the safety and security of those within this is vital. City of London Police (CoLP) operations REFRAME, UNIFY and VIGILANT make a key element to ensuring the integrity of the city.

CIS support Safe Havens and work with all our partners across the Corporation of London, CoLP, local BID’s our customers and our security industry partners. We encourage all those in the city to approach the Safe Haven locations, speak to identifiable security officers, the Taxi Marshalls, and City Pastors to seek support where needed.

This year’s theme was “Changing the Narrative on Suicide” with the call to action “Start the Conversation.” Together, we can reduce stigma and encourage open conversations to prevent suicides.
We are devoted advocates for mental health to help build a safer and happier community. World Suicide Prevention Day gave us the opportunity to think about others and understand that suicide is a major public health challenge. Your mental health is important, and you shouldn’t be ashamed to talk about it. You are not alone. Start the conversation, and together, we can change the narrative on suicide.
START A CONVERSATION
SAVE A LIFE!
On the 10th October it was World Mental Health Day, and this year, we focused on ‘Mental Health in the Workplace’.
Mental well-being is so important, and this year we are reminding our colleagues and customers of the power of “how are you?” A simple question that may spark someone to speak up and share the load.
Since January alone, our Colleague Development team has trained over 240 colleagues to be Mental Health First Aiders, enabling them to be present and available should someone need them. At CIS Security
Limited we are a family, and you can always find support. Take the time today to ask someone you work with ‘how are you?’
GREAT FEEDBACK
We have had some great feedback and recognition for our donation to the JLL Charity Football Tournament.
This is one of the largest fundraisers JLL have had in their office and we are very proud here at CIS to have been able to contribute to such a great cause.
Security
Dear team at CIS Security
We would like to extend a huge thank you on behalf of all at JLL for your generous contribution to our Charity Fundraiser Raffle, as part of the JLL Norwich Charity Football Fun Day, which was held on 19th July 2024 at The Nest, Home of Norwich City Community Sports Foundation. Your donation of Fortnum and Mason Hamper was gratefully received as one of the standout prizes and helped us to raise a total of £3,309. JLL will be matching this figure to give us a grand total of £6,618 raised. This sum is being donated to Norwich City Community Sports Foundation and to WWF. Your contribution to the event was advertised in our raffle prize list which was circulated to the office (approximately 450 staff), included in a copy of our Event programme and your logo’s advertised on the television screens in the office over three floors. This has most certainly helped to spread awareness of your company so that you could benefit from the event too. Further to this, if you have any events or promotions that our staff could benefit from, please do send us the information and we can share on our internal social page. We have included some photos from the event that can be seen on the attached email and hope these make for some good viewing, along with a link to the event video.
Again, we cannot thank you enough in playing your part in making our charity event a huge success and being able to support these two fantastic charities with the work they do.
We would love to hear about any future events that you may hold that we could potentially try and support and look forward to working with you in the future.
Yours faithfully,
Simon Hill

GREAT FEEDBACK
CIS would like to extend our congratulations to Wayne Nye-Jones, Key Account Manager and Darcie Alabaster, Talent Resourcing Officer, for their continued commitment and supporting local initiatives for recruitment within the community. We have had some great feedback for your hard work.
“I wanted to take a moment to express our sincere gratitude for the support CIS has provided to our recent community-focused initiative, at Ealing Broadway. Wayne and Darcie have been instrumental in helping us drive this forward. In particular, Wayne’s presentation to the group was brilliant. It provided valuable insights and motivation that left a lasting impression on everyone involved. His engagement really helped to inspire confidence and clarify the opportunities available through CIS.
On a wider note, we’ve also thoroughly enjoyed working with CIS on other programmes in the wider London area, such as at Regent’s Place and Brookfield Properties. These collaborations have been instrumental in supporting communities and driving positive change, and we value the strong relationship we’ve built.
Additionally, we greatly appreciate CIS’s commitment to covering the cost for successful candidates to gain their SIA license. This generous investment has not only enabled people to return to work but has also empowered them with valuable skills for long-term success.
Thank you again for all your continued support. We’re excited to keep working together to help more people get back to work and improve their lives. I know interviews are current being arranged by Darcie for 12 of our programme candidates. Fingers crossed”.

ONE CREECHURCH PLACE
Working with Full Circle Systems, we recently installed an additional external PTZ camera at One Creechurch Place. This project involved the addition of new conduit, new cabling for both data and electrical, as well as the installation of the unit itself; high level on external cladding.
The new system was configured to obscure any view of the adjacent school, which has been locked onto the programming of the unit.
We have recently taken over the maintenance for a new JLL site; 22 Long Acre. Working with Definitive Security Solutions, we have installed a new CCTV NVR that will enable remote monitoring of the CCTV systems and will soon be expanding this monitoring service to include the alarms for the building. We are excited to be involved with the new JLL project at 22 Long Acre in which we will be looking to install control equipment for all security services within the building.
Please see below details for recent works on a Savills contract we have – Pontegedea. We have recently upgraded the access control upgrade at 11 Westend house & the CCTV at 225 Oxford St. Attached are the completion docs, which have some images of the installs.
Partnering with Definitive Security Solutions, we successfully upgraded the obsolete access control system throughout the building. This included installing new cabling and implementing a Paxton access control system. The new system is seamlessly integrated with the building next door, streamlining operations for onsite security personnel.
ACCESS CONTROL UPGRADE (11 WESTEND HOUSE)
We collaborated with Definitive Security Solutions to upgrade the existing CCTV system at 225 Oxford Street. This project involved installing a new DVR, hard drive, monitor, and cameras. By utilising the existing cabling infrastructure, we were able to keep costs low without sacrificing quality. The on-site security team has praised the improved clarity and performance of the new system.
CCTV UPGRADE (225 OXFORD STREET)
VACANT BUILDING TEMPORARY MONITORED SECURITY SYSTEMS
CIS Innovative Solutions along with our partners Envision Intelligent Solutions have installed temporary security systems across the Shaftsbury Instruction, to support vacant property management.
Wireless security systems are the perfect security solution for continuous surveillance of your property, business, or assets. They can be installed in a matter of minutes and demand no existing infrastructure, unlike hard wired security systems. The systems are then monitored by a dedicated team with Envisions Alarm receiving Centre (ARC).
INSTALLATION OF RAPID SPEED DOMES
We have installed Rapid Speed Domes, Reconeyez PIR cameras, Siren/flashing beacons and keypad for arming/disarming systems across multiple buildings within the Shaftsbury instruction. All alarm activations are monitored via the CCTV network and escalated to the Security Teams at Carnaby, Soho and China Town.
INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS
If you would like to know more you can request our Innovative Solutions Product Catalogue by contacting our Head of Innovative Solutions, Kuldeep Kainth. This document contains information on a range of recommended products that CIS supplies, installs, and maintains.

07. HEALTH AND SAFETY
WHAT IS “GUILTY KNOWLEDGE”?
A LEGAL CONCEPT
“Guilty knowledge” is a phrase used in criminal law that relates to a defendant pos-sessing specific knowledge about a crime that only the perpetrator would have. The prosecution may use evidence of “guilty knowledge” to establish a defendant’s culpa-bility or connection to a criminal act.
How does this relate to workplace health and safety?
In this context the concept of “guilty knowledge” can be applied to situations where an employer or supervisor possesses specific knowledge of hazardous conditions, safety violations or risks within the workplace but fails to take appropriate action to address them.
If an individual knowingly ignores or conceals critical information they may be held accountable for having “guilty knowledge” of these issues. For example, if you are aware of unsafe working conditions, potential risks to employees, etc., but de-liberately choose not to rectify or report them, it could be considered as “guilty knowledge”. This failure to act on known safety concerns can be seen as a form of negligence or wilful disregard making you liable for any resulting harm or accidents that may occur.
Demonstrating that you had “guilty knowledge” of workplace hazards can be crucial in determining liability in injuries or health issues. Failure to act on known concerns jeopardises the wellbeing of workers and exposes the business to legal repercussions and reputational damage.
HORSEPLAY
Hammer was thrown at employee as a joke.
A court has refused an appeal by an employee who was denied compensation after he was struck on the head by a flying hammer. What does this case teach us about employers’ liability for horseplay incidents?
HEAD INJURY
The case of Somerville v Harsco Infrastructure Ltd was heard in a Scottish Sheriff Court The hearing considered an appeal against an earlier judgment in which an employer was absolved of responsibility for a reckless act.
Christopher Somerville (CS) had been injured when working for Harsco Infrastructure Ltd (H), an Edinburgh-based scaffolding firm. He was in the yard checking scaffolding boards when he was struck on the head by a hammer. CS was off work for three days, and suffered nausea, dizziness and headaches from which he later recovered. He claimed compensation from H for his injuries.
WHY DID IT HAPPEN?
Stanley Smith (SS) was the yard and transport manager. Prior to the incident he had been engaged in light-hearted banter with a colleague concerning who should be sent to collect rolls for the morning break. As he walked back to his office, in a continua-tion of the exchange, the colleague shouted something at his back. In response SS called back,“I will teach you to speak to your manager like that”, then picked up a claw hammer and threw it. CS just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
EMPLOYERS’ LIABILITY
On first assessment the incident appeared to be work-related. The hammer was work equipment which was owned by H and used by colleagues in the yard. Plus, the accident occurred on H’s premises during working hours. All of these factors pointed towards H being responsible for the consequences. But at the first hearing the case was dis-missed on the basis that the event was not closely connected with SS’s employment.
Note.
Through vicarious liability employers are liable for the actions of their employees car-ried out“in the course of employment”. This is the case even if the actions of the em-ployee are flawed, wrong or illegal.
APPEAL
At the appeal hearing CS’s lawyer contended that the Sheriff had been wrong to find in favour of the employer. He argued that the words spoken by SS immediately before he threw the hammer, including“your manager”, showed that he acted in his superviso-ry role, albeit in a reckless fashion. But the Sheriff Principal at the appeal hearing con-cluded that the words in question were simply light-hearted banter and that the fool-hardy act was not carried out in the course of SS’s employment. The appeal was therefore refused.
IMPLICATIONS
You are not liable for every wrongful act committed in work time by your colleagues. How-ever, if horseplay is a common occurrence which management ought to be aware of, you could be held responsible for the consequences.
Tip.
Make it clear within your health and safety policy and any employee safety rules is-sued, that horseplay will not be tolerated. Apply your disciplinary procedures in the event of any suspected incidents.
The employer won the case because it showed that the act of its employee was not carried out “in the course of his employment”. Whilst you are not liable for every reckless act carried out by your colleagues, you do need to keep a close eye on them. Disciplinary action must be taken if practical jokes put others at risk.

After nine months of training Andrew Gough, Security Manager, One Crown Place finally completed the Thames Path 100km Ultra Marathon in September. It was a gruelling event that pushed him to his limits both physically and mentally.
