WELCOME! Welcome to IJBC 2021!

We are so excited to have you participating in our second online International Junior Branch Conference. Usually IJBC is held in person, but because of our current circumstances, it will be held entirely online like last year. Having a virtual IJBC has given us the opportunity to involve more people and try a lot of new things. We have learned so much over the past year and a half of online work and have applied it to this conference. This year we’re continuing the conversations we started last year and we’re so excited to be building Junior Branch with all of you. Almost every session on our schedule will be run twice, to make it as accessible as possible across timezones. We are so proud of what you have all accomplished this year working online and we hope that you can take things from IJBC 2021 to bring back to your own work. We have loved seeing all of the local/national/and regional initiatives that have come out of one of the most difficult times a lot of us have lived through. We hope that IJBC Online continues to contribute to a new norm of accessible online content and we are so honoured to be sharing this experience with you. Thank you for participating in IJBC and we look forward to learning with you! !

WHAT IS IJBC? IJBC (or the International Junior Branch Conference) is a conference for Junior Branch members to learn, discuss important issues in and outside of the organization, and connect with JBers from around the world. IJBC is a combination of training sessions, educational content, and discussions about the future of Junior Branch. We aim to provide methods and tools for Junior Branches to apply at the local and national level. After IJBC, participants are expected to have increased their attitudes, skills and knowledge to become active global citizens and to have new ideas and skills to use in their local, national, and regional contexts. Usually IJBC takes place every year in a location chosen by the NJRs, however we didn’t want to lose this opportunity to connect because of Covid, so we moved online!

PAST IJBC?

6

In the past, we’ve held IJBC in each of the 3 regions, last year’s conference being held in Bangkok, Thailand! Usually we are able to have around 100 participants but with our conference being online, we have the cool opportunity to open IJBC up to more people.

INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR BRANCH International Junior Branch is made up of a lot of different hard-working JBers. We have people working on the regional level as well as the international level to improve Junior Branch on the international level and also support JBers nationally and locally. We are made up of three main groups: our Regional Junior Branch Teams, our International Junior Branch Team (IJB Team), and our International Junior Representatives (IJRs).

REGIONAL JUNIOR BRANCH TEAMS

Americas Junior Branch Team (AJB), Europe Middle East and Africa Junior Branch Team (EJB), Asia Pacific Junior Branch Team (APJB) We have three Regional Junior Branch Teams working with NJRs and Local JBers to support their JBs. Each region is divided into smaller neighbourhoods that are a group of National Junior Branches. One of the responsibilities of the regional teams is to work with their Neighbourhood. They are also responsible for planning the regional junior branch meetings that happen around Easter each year.

8

There are 3 different roles that someone can hold on the IJB Team: Committee member, specialist, or project manager. Committee members are JBers who sit on CISV International committees (in Chapter Development, Training & Quality Assurance, Resources & Infrastructure, and Educational Programmes), bringing their experience and providing a JB perspective. They work with CISV members to improve the organization as a whole and liaise back to the IJB Team. Specialists each focus on one topic, working on ways to support JBers and improve our current practices. They are responsible for working with the IJRs, Regional Teams, and NJRs to bring information to Junior Branch.

INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR BRANCH

TEAMS

The International Junior Branch Team is made up of JBers from across the world who are either working in specific areas of Junior Branch or representing Junior Branch in CISV. The IJB Team is responsible for representing JB on different CISV committees, creating projects to support JB, and helping lead Junior Branch as a whole. Right now we have 13 people on the IJB Team.

Project Managers have only one focus in their role on the IJB Team. Each has a project they are working to bring to life. Our projects are spread across different themes and target different audiences, from NJRs to local JBers. All three roles on the IJB Team often find opportunities to collaborate and work together. Often our projects have pieces that overlap or members have specific knowledge that benefits a project. We are working to become more efficient in what we do but over the past few years a lot of progress has been made.

9

INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR

REPRESENTATIVES

There are always two IJRs, a junior and a senior, who are responsible for coordinating the IJB Team, representing Junior Branch, and planning the International Junior Branch Conference. Right now, your IJRs are Natasha from Indonesia (senior) and Santana from Canada (junior). One of the roles the IJRs take on is coordinating the IJB Team. They work with the specialists, committee members, and project managers on their projects and offer feedback and advice. The IJRs also represent Junior Branch more formally and have one vote each as members of CISV International. This includes voting for new Governing Board members and voting on motions. New committees or working groups also often ask for a JB representative, so the IJRs work with them to find someone to fit the role. Finally, the IJRs are responsible for coordinating and planning IJBC. In nonpandemic years, this means working with the hosting country to organize the site and logistics as well as working with the facilitators to plan the content.

IJBC 2021 SESSIONS

IJBC will be full of very interesting and relevant sessions, remember you can participate in as many sessions as you want. Find out more about them:

NEW HORIZONS THREAD SESSIONS ON 7 AUG 13:00, 8 AUG 1:00, 13 AUG 7:00 & 19:00 UTC

In the aftermath of this challenging year, we are hoping with this thread to provide you with a moment to stop, take a deep breath, clear your mind from the franticness of trying to maintain Junior Branch throughout a pandemic, and finally, to gaze at the future and our path towards it. We will explore our current strengths, weaknesses, challenges and from that foundation we will chart a roadmap for the future of JB at both the national and international level.

22

BREAKING THE LOOP

This session aims to provide a platform for a reflection on the current state of motivation at both and individual and organizational level. While simultaneously, allowing us to tackle some of the most pressing issues that Junior Branch faces today.

PAVE THE WAY

This session was mainly created for the participants to reflect on the current situation and how can we use what we’ve learned to build an even better jb in the next 5 years

Participants in this thread will reflect on their activism, specifically in the context of CISV/ JB. Through this evaluation and reflection, they will gain better ASK (Attitudes, skills, and knowledge) that will allow them to better their advocacy.

INDIVIDUAL SAVIOR COMPLEX

Through group discussions and reflective prompts, participants will be given an opportunity to look at their privileges through an analytical lens and how these advantages may have resulted in an unhealthy relationship with advocacy.

INSTITUTIONAL SAVIOR COMPLEX

Picking up on the individual reflection done in the first session, participants will apply their understanding of the saviour complex to dissect CISV and JB’s mission and advocacy, and different ways our organization may have tiptoed into performative activism. Through simulation activities, they will reflect on the systemization of implicit biases and how to reconstruct their activism to cater better to the community they aim to serve.
