to our production of A Streetcar Named
Tennessee Williams is one of the most celebrated playwrights of all time. His complex, flawed characters have become iconic. At the heart of Williams’ dramatic stories of troubled relationships is his belief in the power of love. “The world is violent and mercurial--it will have its way with you. We are saved only by love,” says Williams, “love for each other and the love that we pour into the art we feel compelled to share: being a parent; being a writer; being a painter; being a friend. We live in a perpetually burning building, and what we must save from it, all the time, is love.”
A Streetcar Named Desire is full of characters from different racial and economic backgrounds, struggling through difficult times, connected through their search for love. But Willams believes their desire to connect with one another faces a challenging obstacle, “Nobody sees anybody truly but all through the flaws of their own egos... Vanity, fear, desire, competition-- all such distortions within our own egos-- condition our vision of those in relation to us… That's how it is in all living relationships except when there is that rare case of two people who love intensely enough to burn through all those layers of opacity and see each other's naked hearts.”
The characters in A Streetcar Named Desire are caught in their own distorted perceptions, often trying to disguise the truth, like the colourful lampshade Blanche insists on putting over the light bulb, or her plea, “I don’t want realism. I want magic!” This script offers us a chance to consider how we can strip away the additional layers of fear and ego to see each other clearly and truly love each other.
This production is a partnership with Theatre Calgary, where the show will play in February 2025. Our immense thanks to the team at Theatre Calgary. If you have friends or family in Calgary, please encourage them to check it out!
Thanks so much for joining us. Enjoy the show!

PS – Next up in our fantastic 2024/25 Season is Bear Grease, the hilarious Rez-reimagining of Grease. Followed by the Canadian Premiere of The Ballad of Johnny and June, packed with your favourite Johnny Cash tunes, this new musical traces the highs and lows of the love story of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. And in December we’re thrilled to celebrate our 25th Anniversary of A Christmas Carol with David van Belle’s beloved 1950s adaptation. We hope you’ll join us for all of these incredible productions!
We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty No. 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatories Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stony and Cree-Iroquois as well as other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupy this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create and perform on this territory.

Born Thomas Lanier Williams in Columbus, Mississippi, in 1911, Tennessee Williams was the son of a shoe company executive and a Southern belle. His early adult years were marked by a series of transitions: he attended three different universities, briefly worked at his father’s shoe company, and moved to New Orleans. This city would become a central inspiration for his work, including the iconic play A Streetcar Named Desire.
Williams first garnered critical acclaim in 1944 with The Glass Menagerie, which enjoyed a successful run in Chicago before moving to Broadway. The play earned the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award, and its film adaptation won the New York Film Critics’ Circle Award. His next major success, A Streetcar Named Desire (1947), further solidified his reputation as a leading playwright and earned him his first Pulitzer Prize.
During the next eight years he found homes for Summer and Smoke, The Rose Tattoo and Camino Real on Broadway.
Williams work reached a wider audience in the early 1950s when both The Glass Menagerie and A Streetcar Named Desire were made into motion pictures.
Over the next thirty years his reputation continued to grow and he saw many more of his works produced on Broadway and made into films, including such works as Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Orpheus Descending and Night of the Iguana. Throughout his career, he accumulated two Pulitzer Prizes, three New York Drama Critics’ Circle Awards, three Donaldson Awards, and a Tony Award.
On a personal note, Williams had a significant and enduring relationship with Frank Merlo, which lasted 14 years. However, his life was also marked by struggles with alcohol and drugs, leading to hospitalization in 1969 and ongoing challenges. Beyond plays, Williams also wrote novels, essays, film scripts, poetry, and an autobiography. He passed away on February 24, 1983, at the Hotel Elysée in New York City.

BOOK BY Robert Cary AND Des McAnuff
MUSIC AND LYRICS BY Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash AND others DIRECTED BY Des McAnuff
A brand new musical exploring the life and careers of country music legends Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, told through the eyes of their son John Carter Cash. From their first meeting in 1956 at the Grand Ole Opry to fame, life on the road, controversy and family. This re-telling of their iconic love story is complete with hits like: I Walk The Line, Ring of Fire, and many more.
The Citadel Theatre is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for artists, audience members, and staff.
As part of our ongoing commitment to making our building and programming as accessible as possible, the Citadel Theatre has created new resources on our website (citadeltheatre.com/accessibility):
• Upcoming Accessible Performances in our 2024/25 Season, funded by the Edmonton Community Foundation. This includes Relaxed Performances, ASL Interpreted Performances, Captioned Performances, Touch Tours, and Audio Described Performances.
• Wayfinding pathway videos to prepare for your visit to our building.
• A 3D Building Tour and venue photographs to experience any of our public spaces before you arrive.
• Seat photos and measurements to ensure a comfortable experience.
• Maps to help you find your way around.
• A Visual Guide of the Citadel building that provides plain language descriptions and information about coming to a show.
• Accessible transportation, parking and washroom information
• Details about Access Resources such as Hearing Loop devices and sensory kits.
• An acknowledgement of individuals working within disability-centred performing arts initiatives in Edmonton.
Please reach out to our Accessibility Coordinator, Kristi Hansen, with any questions or suggestions you may have in regards to Accessibility at the Citadel Theatre.

Young people are integral to the artistic fabric of the Citadel Theatre, and we are committed to providing programs and initiatives that champion the development of their artistic identities. Students Club offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of local junior and senior high school students. Prior to select performances of each of our mainstage shows, students participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation with one of our region’s talented theatre artists. Following the performance students stay for an informative talkback with members of the production’s cast and crew.
Many audience members will be familiar with Stanley’s famous “Stellaaaaaa!” cry, but how does an actor sustain this vocal intensity over eight shows per week? Prior to seeing A Streetcar Named Desire, students learned about safe vocal projection with Edmontonbased actor, director, playwright, and voice/text coach, Jennifer Spencer. Jennifer is a sessional member of the Theatre Department of MacEwan University, where, in 2019, she was nominated for a Distinguished Teaching Award. She also taught at the Foote Theatre School at the Citadel Theatre and currently teaches the Music
Theatre Intensive for St. Albert Children’s Theatre (SACT). She is a
Sterling Award nominee for her acting, directing, and playwright work.
For more information on Students Club, or to become a part of the program, please contact groupsales@citadeltheatre.com.
