We’re thrilled to have you here for this much-anticipated production of Disney’s Frozen: The Broadway Musical!
This is a fantastic musical for all ages. Ever since we announced we would be producing Frozen this season, children and adults alike have been singing “Let it Go” in anticipation of this unforgettable experience.
There’s something truly magical about live theatre—especially for children experiencing it for the first time. A show like Frozen can spark a lifelong love of the arts, just as it has for countless others. What was the first play you ever saw? Here at the Citadel, we hope to reignite that same sense of wonder and nostalgia, creating new memories for families to treasure together. Our heartfelt thanks go to director Rachel Peake and the extraordinary creative team for bringing this enchanting world to life, as well as to the Citadel’s exceptional production team for building this stunning show. Frozen is a co-production with the Grand Theatre in London, Ontario, where later this season, the wonder of this show will continue to captivate their audiences!
As we celebrate the magic of this production, we’re also excited to share that we’ve just announced our 2025/26 Season—our 60th Anniversary Season! It’s a milestone made possible by the dedication of audiences like you, and we can’t wait to celebrate this special chapter with you. Thanks so much for joining us. Enjoy the show!

I missed the first wave of Frozen. I was a busy 30-something artist, and animations weren’t really on my radar. All of that changed dramatically when my daughter was born. I couldn’t tell you the first time we watched the movie, but I can tell you the feeling of awe watching a tiny human belt out Let It Go. It was profound.
How far our princesses have come in a generation.
I grew up with Belle and Ariel throwing everything in their lives into chaos for a man. My daughter is growing up with Moana and Elsa and Anna.
Kudos to Disney for the change, but also kudos to a society that demanded it. The first time I watched the film of Frozen and realized that the true love was not going to be what I was programmed to expect made me weep with joy. It felt like a new way of celebrating love. I come to this project as someone with deep love of the source material. Along with the rest of the creative team, we set out on this journey to create a stage version that honours the original film: that delivers the heart and the humour, and creates the key special moments. We recognize the responsibility we hold. At the same time, we want to celebrate the differences between stage and film, playing into the magic of seeing things live, introducing spectacular theatre to the next generation, and allowing a fresh interpretation of the characters we all love so much.
My daughter has become our uncredited six-year-old advisor at every step of this journey. People often advise emerging directors to imagine their “pristine audience” and to work to fulfill those needs and tastes. Instead, my mentor took a different approach and always advised me to create my productions for one specific person I know well. With the goal being that we can then deliver on dreams from the specific to the universal.
Which means, undoubtedly, this one is for Anwen.
And for all of you.
-Rachel Peake-
Young people are integral to the artistic fabric of the Citadel Theatre, and we are committed to providing programs and initiatives that champion the development of their artistic identities. Students Club offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of local junior and senior high school students. Prior to select performances of each of our mainstage shows, students participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation with one of our region’s talented theatre artists. Following the performance students stay for an informative talkback with members of the production’s cast and crew.
There is no doubt that the story of Frozen packs a punch! During highintensity scenes with staged violence like punches, pushes and falls, it’s important that the actors are kept safe while onstage. Prior to seeing Frozen, Students Club participants explored stage combat with local fight and intimacy choreographer, Sarah Spicer. Sarah enjoys working with numerous theatre companies and schools in the area to help keep people safe while they are working on their shows. While sword fighting
is one of her favourite pastimes, she really enjoys working on hand-to-hand combat and slapstick. Sarah also works as an actor, producer, and director here in Edmonton.

Music Theatre International (MTI) is one of the world's leading theatrical licensing agencies, granting theatres from around the world the rights to perform the greatest selection of musicals from Broadway and beyond. Founded in 1952 by composer Frank Loesser and orchestrator Don Walker, MTI is a driving force in advancing musical theatre as a vibrant and engaging art form. MTI works directly with the composers, lyricists and book writers of these musicals to provide official scripts, musical materials and dynamic theatrical resources to over 100,000 professional, community and school theatres in the US and in over 150 countries worldwide.
MTI is particularly dedicated to educational theatre, and has created special collections to meet the needs of various types of performers and audiences. MTI’s Broadway Junior® shows are 30- and 60-minute musicals for performance by elementary and middle school-aged performers, while MTI’s School Editions are musicals annotated for performance by high school students.
The Grand Theatre is proud to partner with the Citadel Theatre on this co-production of Frozen.
The Grand Theatre is one of Canada’s top theatre companies, serving over 100,000 audience members in southwestern Ontario every year.

"Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek...." And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there's one on hand... and his name is Shrek.
Featuring Michael Watt as Shrek, and Jeremy Carver James as Donkey!
June 20th - 28th, 2025
Many moons ago in a far-off place, Queen Aggravain decreed no couples could marry until her son, Prince Dauntless, found a bride. Princesses came from far and wide to win the hand of the prince, but none could pass the impossible tests given to them by the Queen. That is, until the “shy” swamp princess, Winnifred the Woebegone, showed up. Would she be able to pass the Sensitivity Test, marry her prince and help Lady Larken and Sir Harry to the altar? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the classic tale The Princess and the Pea provides some side-splitting shenanigans. For after all, a princess is a delicate thing.

With the support of the RBC Emerging Artists Project, these talented artists are working throughout the season assisting on our Mainstage Productions in the areas of Directing, Choreography, Design and Music Direction. This program offers support to emerging and early career artists that have not been able to see themselves in these artistic creation roles at one of Canada’s largest theatre companies.
FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROGRAM AND THE ARTISTS VISIT OUR WEBSITE.
