WELCOME TO THE CITADEL
We are thrilled that you have joined us for The Ballad of Johnny and June!
Over the past few years, the Citadel has made a name for itself internationally as a great place to develop new musicals with their sights set on Broadway. Hadestown and SIX both had development steps at the Citadel and are both still in the midst of long, successful Tony Award-winning runs on Broadway.
And now we’re partnering with La Jolla Playhouse in California on The Ballad of Johnny and June! La Jolla Playhouse is known for its outstanding track-record of Broadwaybound productions (over 30)! The Ballad of Johnny and June premiered in La Jolla this summer and that cast and creative team now come to the Citadel to continue development on the production and to share this incredible new musical with Edmonton audiences before anyone else.
The Ballad of Johnny and June is directed and co-written by Des McAnuff, one of Broadway’s most celebrated directors. Des was the original director for both Jersey Boys and The Who’s Tommy. He was also the Artistic Director of the prestigious Stratford Festival, where he had a keen young assistant director named Daryl. It is our honour to welcome Des and this incredible team to the Citadel and our pleasure to share this fantastic new musical with you!
Country music royalty Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash remain to this day one of the most famous couples of the 20th Century. Created with the support of the family and told through the eyes of their son John Carter Cash, this new musical tells the story of the soaring highs and whiplash lows of fame, life on the road, addiction, marriage, family and devotion. Thanks so much for joining us. Enjoy the show!

PS – We have more great musicals ahead in our 2024/25 Season! Join us in the new year for Disney’s Frozen and A Midsummer Night’s Dream: The ‘70s Musical! And we hope you’ll bring in the holiday season with us in December as we celebrate our 25th Anniversary of A Christmas Carol with David van Belle’s beloved music-filled 1950s adaptation.
We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty No. 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatories –Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stony and Cree-Iroquois – as well as other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupy this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create and perform on this territory.

BACKGROUND ON JOHNNY and JUNE
cJohnny Cash and June Carter Cash are iconic figures in American music, known for their profound influence on country and folk genres. Johnny, born on February 26, 1932, in Kingsland, Arkansas, rose to fame in the 1950s with hits like "I Walk the Line" and "Ring of Fire." His deep, resonant voice and somber themes often reflected his tumultuous life, marked by struggles with addiction and personal loss.
June Carter Cash, born June 23, 1929, into the legendary Carter Family, was a talented singer-songwriter and actress. She initially met Johnny in 1956 while performing onstage, but it wasn’t until the late 1960s that their relationship blossomed into romance. June’s warmth and resilience complemented Johnny’s darker persona, leading to a powerful partnership both on and off the stage. They married in 1968, and together they created timeless music that celebrated love and redemption. The couple had one son, John Carter Cash, born on March 3, 1970. Growing up surrounded by music, John was deeply influenced by his parents’ artistry and passion. He became a musician and producer, carrying on the Cash legacy while also carving out his own path in the industry. John has worked to preserve and promote his parents’ work, ensuring that their contributions to music and culture endure for future generations. Their family story is a testament to love, creativity, and the enduring power of music.
DIRECTOR'S NOTES c
There is a prejudice with musical theatre that the stories need to be light and frothy and can’t take on serious topics. There is a notion that a certain kind of animated insincerity is required when actors are asked to burst into song. It’s my observation, though, that this is very often not the case and that the best musicals need to be pinned down by matters of importance. They need to embrace themes that have resonance and depth. My Fair Lady is about the British class system. Hamilton is about revolution and sacrifice. Even The Pajama Game, at its core, is about the relationship between management and union. The Ballad of Johnny and June is, of course, about the birth and evolution of country music, and at its center is a great love story. Just beneath the surface, however, there is the subject of family addiction.
This is a topic that resonates with many of us today as so many of our own families and those of our neighbors are plagued by this monster that reaches out to touch so many souls. This has worsened with the addition of opioids to heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamines, as well as a great range of pharmaceuticals, some of which have been with us for generations. Shutting down the appetite of this insatiable beast often requires a warzone’s worth of energy from everyone who’s touched by the devastating turmoil that drugs create.
The story of Johnny Cash, June Carter, and their son John Carter however is not some kind of depressing downer. It’s a great inspiration. It should lead all of us to hope that with love and devotion, we can transcend even the darkest challenges that life serves up. There’s more to musical theatre than just great music.
- Des McAnuff
STUDENTS CLUB
Young people are integral to the artistic fabric of the Citadel Theatre, and we are committed to providing programs and initiatives that champion the development of their artistic identities. Students Club offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of local junior and senior high school students. Prior to select performances of each of our mainstage shows, students participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation with one of our region’s talented theatre artists. Following the performance students stay for an informative talkback with members of the production’s cast and crew.
Country music provides the heartbeat of The Ballad of Johnny and June. Before seeing the show, Students Club participants were challenged to write their very own country song in just 45 minutes! D’orjay, The Singing Shaman, taught this dynamic workshop. D’orjay colours outside the lines with anthemic, bold blues, honky-tonk and rock-flavoured roots with a distinct queer, Black twist. A self-described late bloomer, at 35, they grabbed the mic, releasing their critically acclaimed debut, the apropos-named New Kind of Outlaw, in November 2020. It charms with a yee-haw agenda anthem, a touching ode to their grandmother, a unique and disarming rendition of The Wallflowers’ “One Headlight” and conjures a rural highway trailer bar. Their powerful, warm voice guides orchestration featuring piano, syncopated electric guitar, paced banjo, fiddle and steel guitar, all with a healing self-reflection. This ain’t your grandaddy’s country music, despite it paying homage to classic country.

"Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek...." And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there's one on hand... and his name is Shrek.
Featuring Michael Watt as Shrek, and Jeremy Carver James as Donkey! TICKETS ON SALE SOON
