Greetings: On behalf of the citizens of our great city, welcome to Cleveland – a championship city on the rise. From the Champion Cleveland Cavaliers and Calder Cup winning Lake Erie Monsters to the American League Pennant, hard-fought Game 7 of the World Series Cleveland Indians and the destination for the 2016 Republican National Convention, Cleveland has seen major successes this year. There has been more than $3.5 billion in visitor related investments in Downtown Cleveland, including hotels, restaurants and retail shops on East 4th Street and in the Flats East Bank and the newly renovated Public Square. Neighborhood hotspots are booming, especially in Little Italy, Waterloo Arts District, Tremont and Ohio City, which houses the West Side Market. If that isn’t enough, we are home to Playhouse Square Theater District, the largest outside of New York, professional sports teams, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, JACK Casino, Great Lakes Science Center and the Cleveland Aquarium. Tour any one of our world-class museums or catch The Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall. No matter what you are looking for, Cleveland is full of exciting things to do. We are a city connected to our greatest natural asset – Lake Erie – and its many recreational offerings. And with countless trails, parks and public spaces, you are certain to find something to love. Once again, welcome! Enjoy all that we have to offer and share in the experiences that are uniquely Cleveland. Sincerely, Frank G. Jackson, Mayor

All year long attractions such as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum as well as other exciting local activities and destinations will thrill visitors of all ages and leave them wanting more of what Mr. James recently branded as “The Land.” We hope you find the information in the Citiview Cleveland guide helpful during your visit. Mr. Rock and Roll
From his seat behind the microphone at WJW Radio in Cleveland and, later, WINS Radio, deejay Alan Freed did more to spread the gospel of rock and roll during its infancy than any other non-performer. Born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and raised in Salem, Ohio, Freed came to WJW as host of a classical music show in February, 1951. He befriended Leo Mintz, owner of Record Rendezvous, a store on Prospect Avenue in downtown Cleveland. Legend has it that Mintz told Freed that numerous white kids were buying black R&B records at his store and convinced Freed to begin playing R&B records on WJW. On the evening of July 11, 1951, Freed’s R&B show made its debut on WJW. Soon, Freed adopted a new persona – the Moondog, a crazed hipster who talked over the music, howled, pounded on phone books and banged on a cowbell. “Hello everybody,” Freed would say. “How ya’ll tonight? This is Alan Freed, the ol’ King of the Moondoggers, and its time for some blues and rhythm records for all the gang in the Moondog Kingdom.” By the following January, Freed’s show was causing a stir in Cleveland, and other stations began adding R&B to their play lists. Then on March 21, 1952, Freed, Mintz and Lew Platt, a booking agent and promoter, put on the Moondog Coronation Ball at the old Cleveland Arena on Euclid Avenue. A landmark event in the birth of rock and roll, the Coronation Ball was intended as an R&B concert staring the Dominoes, Paul Williams and Varetta Dillard. Despite the fact that the concert was only advertised on Freed’s radio show, nearly
THECITIVIEW.COM
20,000 people, mostly black, showed up – twice the capacity of the Arena. They crashed through the doors, knocking down ticket takers and ushers and by 11:30, the police and fire departments had closed down the show. The riot became national news, and Freed’s popularity escalated. Many now cite the Coronation Ball as the first rock and roll concert and, indeed, it many have been. But even more important, as another Cleveland deejay, Bill Randle, pointed out, was the fact that “it was the beginning of the acceptance of black popular music as a force in radio. It was the first big show of its kind where the industry saw it as big business.” Freed eventually moved to New York, where he grew in national prominence as he continued to promote rock and roll, via his radio show, television, movies and all-star concerts at Brooklyn’s Paramount Theatre. By 1956, Freed was known throughout the country, and he was arguably rock and roll’s bestknown booster. But by the end of the Fifties, he was a major target of the payola investigation, charged with illegally taking money in exchange for playing certain records. He eventually relocated to the West Coast, where he died a broken man in 1965. Alan Freed was inducted into the inaugural class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.

The Rocky River Reservation is located nearby and is one of the many highlights of the Cleveland Metroparks system. This reservation was the first land purchased for the Cleveland Metroparks and its character is strongly influenced by the Rocky River. onelakewood.com, clevelandmetroparks.com
Ohio City Known as Cleveland’s “artisan neighborhood,” Ohio City is characterized by tree-lined streets and welcoming front porches. Brimming with historic charm and home to fabulous restaurants and plenty of green space, this community is located just across the Cuyahoga River from downtown Cleveland near the foot of the Veterans Bridge and Lorain Carnegie Bridge. Today, a diverse mixture of 10,000 residents and approximately 15 ethnic groups call this area home, giving it a distinct eclectic flair. Home to the historic, European-styled Westside Market, which was built in 1912 and draws upwards of one million visitors each year, its no surprise that Ohio City is part of an economic transformation in Cleveland that is led by a number of artisan entrepreneurs. Over the past few years a number of independently owned and operated restaurants have been calling Oho City home. Several nightspots offer exciting options for an evening outing, as well. ohiocity.org

Strongsville: Crossroads of the Nation This affluent suburb of Cleveland is known as the “Crossroads of the Nation” because it lies where the Ohio Turnpike intersects with Interstate 71. This excellent location has given rise to a vibrant community that is growing fast but retains a healthy dose of small town charm. Strongsville is home to distinctive neighborhoods, as well as abundant shopping, eclectic restaurants and more than 2,400 acres of green space. While visiting this thriving community, be sure to check out the Strongsville Historical Society, which operates a historic 19th century village composed of structures that are original to the location and buildings that were brought from the surrounding area. Also, the OBM Arena offers a variety of figure skating and hockey programs year round, while the Gardenview Horticultural Park is a 16-acre greenspace with more than 2,000 unusual trees and a wide variety of rare plants.
University Circle Located just four miles from downtown, on the east side of Cleveland, University Circle is also known simply as “the Circle” by locals and is home to the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Museum of Art, MOCA and Lakeview Cemetery. Comprising around 550 acres, the area is an important part of the city’s economic sector and provides more than 30,000 jobs in a variety of fields. In addition to a steady stream of art exhibits, the Circle also hosts the Annual Western Reserve Society Herb Fair each October, which has been taking place for nearly 70 years, as well as the Hessler Street Fair, which is held in late May each year. Wade Oval is University Circle’s year round outdoor venue that features live concerts, movie nights, autumn scarecrows and the Rink at Wade Oval during winter months. universitycircle.org
Westlake Located just 12 miles west of downtown Cleveland the affluent suburb of Westlake is a well rounded city offering upscale shopping, dining and entertainment. It is home to Crocker Park, a mixed use retail and residential community featuring some of the best available retail stores and restaurants. In the mid 1800’s, an Italian sculpture Joseph Carrabelli, began his famous granite and marble works at the top of the “hill” on Mayfield Rd. The area between the railroad and the top of the “hill” became home to Carrabelli and the many Italian families that came to Cleveland to work, and Little Italy was born. Today the traditions hold strong with the rich cultural heritage and the spirit of artistry that Joseph Carrabelli began over 130 years ago. Currently, over 20 galleries, 15 restaurants, many professional-service businesses, two schools and Holy Rosary Church thrive in this village. Known for its Art Galleries and the finest Italian cuisine, Little Italy is host to the City’s famous Art Walks, The Feast of the Assumption, the Columbus Day Parade, Taste of Little Italy, Bocce Tournament and incredible Alfresco Summer Nights! Historic Little Italy in Cleveland, Ohio is located adjacent to the city’s cultural district, University Circle. Case Western Reserve University, museums, their world famous symphony, and botanical garden are within walking distance to Little Italy.

The Flats The area near downtown better known as “The Flats” has been an integral part of the city’s history since its very beginning and continues to be a nerve center of activity and development today. In 1796, the city’s founder, Moses Cleaveland and his survey party landed on this area that borders both sides of the Cuyahoga River at the Lake Erie shore front on the north side of downtown. The Flats was home to Cleveland’s industrial district and steel mills that located there to capitalize on the Great Lakes shipping routes until the 1970’s. With the demise of the steel industry, many of the abandoned warehouses were renovated and The Flats became a hub of nightclubs and various entertainment destinations in the 1980’s and 1990’s. At its peak in the early 1990’s, The Flats were home to the highest concentration of bars in the Midwest. After a period of quiet since the mid 90’s the Flats is now being redeveloped and features some of downtown Cleveland’s most exciting entertainment options.

The Flats is divided into two distinctive areas occupying both sides of the Cuyahoga River: The East and West Banks. The East Bank is closest to downtown and is quickly becoming a business and lifestyle landmark. Located between the western edge of the Warehouse District along W. 10th St and the Cuyahoga River the Flats East Bank features new hotels, several restaurants, residential living and a 1,000-foot long boardwalk along the banks of the Cuyahoga River. This area is a nerve center of new development and is attracting a lot of attention locally and nationally. The Flats East Bank offers a lifestyle all its own with unique options you can’t find anywhere else in the city. Exciting destinations such as the Big Bang Dueling Piano Bar have recently chosen to locate in the neighborhood. The restaurants and entertainment facilities locating in this area are upscale, modern and offer the local flavors and personality of Cleveland’s nationally recognized and rapidly growing foodie scene. Rivergate Park was developed by the Cleveland Rowing Foundation to accommodate canoeing, kayaking and dragon boating and also calls the Flats East Bank home. This fabulous park provides an excellent opportunity to experience great views of the city while relaxing in one of the city’s most historic areas. The Crooked River Skate Park is located in Rivergate Park as well. This state of the art course is open year round and in all types of weather. Experienced skateboarders claim the weather variations make the course even more fun! Look for several new retailers and restaurants to call the Flats East Bank home in 2017! The West Bank has been established a bit longer then the East bank and is home to several businesses that have been located there for many years. Shooters Waterfront CafĂŠ, the Nautica Entertainment Complex, Jacobs Pavilion, the Greater Cleveland Aquarium and the Nautica Queen cruise ship have all called the West Bank home for some time. The FirstEnergy Powerhouse, a former power station located between the Jacobs Pavilion and the Nautica Queen base, has been transformed to host a few major local attractions and restaurants. It is home to the Greater Cleveland Aquarium, the Nautica CafĂŠ, and Windows on the River and all together these three destinations provide a fun family adventure in one location. This area has recently been named the Nautica Entertainment District. Recently, the Steelyard Commons was developed near the West Bank just south of the downtown area and features a wide array of retail, restaurants and even a 1-mile stretch of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath. Many family friendly events are held here throughout the year as well. There are numerous restaurants and nightclubs located here that offer many excellent entertainment and dining options. Many of the best and most memorable skyline shots of downtown Cleveland have been taken from the West Bank. For more information on the Flats West Bank please visit: thisiscleveland.com

Wine With Dinner?
We came up with a few quick wine pairing tips for you to consider as you contemplate your dinner destination. We’re sure you’ll find the perfect restaurant and hopefully these tips will make your meal a little more enjoyable. The overall goal is to balance your wine with the food you’re eating. Give some thought as to whether your meal will be creamy, acidic, fatty, lean, mild or flavorful. Mild wines do well with mild food, big flavorful meals match well with big flavorful wines and acidic foods do best when paired with acidic wines. Acidic wines and creamy dishes do not mix well and spicy dishes can completely overpower some wines. Many times wines and foods go best together that grew up together. If you’re eating an Italian dinner you may consider an Italian wine, for example. Wine tannins are an important factor as well and originate in grape skins, seeds and the barrels the wines are aged in. Their astringent flavor strips the taste of fat off of your tongue leading to a refreshing meal. Some studies suggest that tannins may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. White wines typically have less tannins than red wines as red wines are aged with the grape skins and pips while white wines are not. We’ve identified five categories of wine pairing to introduce you to the concept if you’re not yet familiar. Have fun and Bon Appetit!!
52
Body This is a delicate balance of the “weight” of your wine and your desired dish. The body of each should match. Pair a rich, oaky California chardonnay with a rich buttery pasta and a lighter French Chablis with pasta cooked in a light wine based sauce. The wines and pasta complement each other rather than one overpowering the other. Acidity Tangy foods can make wine taste flat. When eating dishes with vinegar and/or citrus based sauces try to pair with a wine of equal acidity. White wines made from grapes grown in California, northern Italy or France will usually do the trick. Texture Tannic wines go much better with fatty dishes as the tannins and the fat contrast with each other. The buttery texture of fats act as a tannin nullifier, alleviating the drying sensation of tannic wines while the tannins break down the richness of the fat. Tannic red wines pair well with any fatty meat, not exclusively red meats. They will also go better with a ribeye than a filet, due to the fat content of the ribeye. Sweet & Spicy A sweeter wine can take away some of the heat of a spicy dish. Sweeter wines are sometimes lower in alcohol which also helps offset spicy flavors. A high alcohol wine will enhance the spicy flavors instead of balancing them out.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
More than 25 years ago, leaders in the music industry joined together to establish the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation in New York City to celebrate the music and musicians that changed the world. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum opened its doors in 1995 on the shores of Lake Erie in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Its mission is to educate visitors, fans and scholars from around the world about the history and continuing significance of rock and roll music. Cleveland ranked first in a public poll conducted by USA Today asking where the Hall of Fame should be located. After much competition and many visits to potential sites by Foundation members, Cleveland is chosen as the permanent home for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in May of 1986. Along with the voice of the public, there is much history of rock and roll in Cleveland. Deejay Alan Freed first coined the term “rock and roll” on his Cleveland station WJW in the early 1950s and the first rock and roll concert was held in the city soon thereafter. On June 7, 1993, ground was broken for the Museum in Cleveland and in September of 1995 and after 12 years in the making, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum opened its doors. It is the world’s first museum dedicated to the living heritage of rock and roll music. The Museum features dynamic interactive exhibits, intimate performance spaces and presents a rotation

of artifact and costume displays from the museum’s permanent collection. Exhibits showcase specific eras, styles and milestones, as well as highlight the many facets of rock and roll’s evolution. The Museum’s exhibits are designed to provide the visitor with a unique, interactive experience. The collection of artifacts and stage costumes is enhanced by the combination of state-ofthe-art technology and innovative film and video. The Museum offers a comprehensive retrospective on rock and roll’s origins, development, legends and immense impact on global culture. The Museum presents public programming, including the popular Hall of Fame Series, which regularly features Hall of Fame inductees in an informal interview and performance setting. The annual American Music Masters Series is dedicated to the exploration of an early influence inductee’s music and enduring impact on popular music. Since the Museum’s opening, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum has welcomed more than nine million visitors from around the world and reaches more than 50,000 students and educators each year through its education programs on site and at great distances. In 2012, the Rock Hall opened its Library and Archives – the world’s first of its kind – in downtown Cleveland, as well.

Shiny Hoppy People: Navigating Cleveland’s beer explosion! by Justin Glanville Something seriously hoppy is going on in Cleveland. Suddenly, it seems like there are brewpubs everywhere. You could stand on a random street corner, lift a stein in the air, and someone would probably fill it with suds. Maybe it’s C-town’s working class heritage, the legacy of steel and automobile workers who capped off their shifts with a shot and a beer at the corner bar. Combine that with the rise of the national craft beer movement the number of breweries in the U.S. now exceeds 3,000, according to the Brewers Association -- and the brewpub-ness of Cleveland starts to make a lot of sense. A visitor might feel overwhelmed by choice. Assuming you can’t spend all your time drinking, how do you choose where to imbibe and where not? When it comes to food, I like...
I’ll eat when I’m dead. Just give me the beer.
Stick to your ribs comfort food.
Nestled into an old elevator factory in the city’s Asiatown district, Indigo Imp Brewery opens its doors on Fridays between noon to 7 p.m. to serve samples of its small-batch ales and porters. Just finding the place feels like an adventure: Pull into the rear parking lot behind the hulking 19th century facade, look for the orange door past the loading dock, then follow the signs down the long hallway...
Great Lakes Brewing Company, established in 1985 at the predawn of the city’s microbrew movement, has had plenty of time to perfect its menu of burgers, fried fish and mac-and-cheese. Whatever the season, you’ll find something tasty and filling to match the brewery’s rotating -- and nationally renowned -- selection of beers. Kraut, schnitzel and other dishes whose names I can’t pronounce.
The $8 million, 20,000-square-foot Hofbräuhaus Cleveland offers a menu nearly as imposing as its 1,700-seat dining hall. You’ll find such exotic offerings as Münchner wurstsalat (sausage-and-onion salad) and Knusprige schweinshaxe (crispy pork shank), as well as more familiar schnitzels and sauerkraut, to go along the house-made lagers and ales. Meat. Maybe even raw meat.
As its name suggests, downtown’s Butcher and the Brewer pairs house brews with meat curated by its in-house butcher and charcutier. Among their offerings is a steak tartare with poached egg and capers -- though vegetarians won’t go hungry, either, thanks to B&B’s decidedly less bloody tofu and pasta selections. The tastiest, chewiest soft pretzel ever.
There’s heaven, and then there’s Market Garden Brewery’s soft baked pretzel. Who knew the simple combination of wheat, yeast and salt could be so utterly transporting -- chewy and pillowy in all the right places? Add garnishes of housemade, whole-grain mustard and fluffy cream cheese, and you’ve got an appetizer that almost upstages the brewery’s excellent beer.
Atmosphere is important, and the vibe I’m looking for is... Present meets past.
New owner Rick Semersky is busy turning the 60-year-old Sterle’s Country House into the center of a vibrant urban district. He’s kept the restaurant’s ski-chalet interior and most of its original menu, but also added healthier, locally sourced options -- and, yes, a biergarten serving beer brewed on premises. He’s now expanding into surrounding buildings, where he’ll open a full-scale brewpub in spring 2015. Informal, with great local music.
Bottlehouse Brewery produces small batches of beer and mead (it’s one of only four meaderies in Ohio) in the bustling Cedar-Lee district of Cleveland Heights. At the communal style tables, you can listen to local bands on weekends, or try your hand at trivia or board games during the week. Weekend’s here, let’s PARTY!
The densely populated west side enclave of Lakewood has long been known for its party ethic, aided by the sheer number of bars on offer. Buckeye Beer Engine is the serving outpost of Buckeye Brewing Company, whose brewing facility is across town. The Engine’s big, open bar area encourages circulation and mingling.
Lots of variety.
Family friendly.
To go along with its DIY ethos -- the brewmaster offers a handful of his own beers, along with more than a dozen guest brews by novice brewers -- Platform Beer Co. brings in a rotating cast of local restaurant and food truck chefs to feed its hungry drinkers. On Mondays, you’ll get selections from the Wok N Roll food truck, while Fridays feature wildly popular brunch spot Jack Flaps. The stuff’s cheap, too, with baskets of food averaging under $10 a pop.
Rocky River Brewing Company and Willoughby Brewing Company, both in the suburbs, are always chock full of families, and feature kids’ menus to keep the youngsters happy while mom and dad drink well-respected craft beers. With all these options, I can’t trust myself to drive.
Call for cabs, or better yet make a reservation on the Cleveland Brew Bus (clevelandbrewbus.com 440-876-7188), which offers 4-hour group tours of multiple breweries on its big yellow bus.

Cleveland is home to three professional sports franchises. The Cleveland Browns (NFL), Cleveland Indians (MLB) and Cleveland Cavaliers (NBA). The Lake Erie Monsters represent Cleveland in the American Hockey League while the Cleveland Gladiators are members of the Arena Football League. Needless to say, Cleveland is a booming sports town! Between all of these teams, there are games scheduled all year long and chances are you’ll find at least one of these teams playing at home during your visit. 2016 was very exciting for Cleveland sports as the Cavs won the NBA Championship in June and the Indians made an appearance in the World Series in the fall! A hard act to follow in 2017 but both teams are poised for exceptional seasons!
Cleveland Cavaliers 2016 was an exceptional year for the Cavaliers as they brought home Cleveland’s first NBA title in the team’s history! Led by local legend, LeBron James, the Cavs won a 7 game series against the Golden State Warriors after coming back from a 3-1 deficit. The only time the feat has been achieved in NBA history! The Cleveland Cavaliers joined the NBA as an expansion team in 1970 and have made 20 playoff appearances in their nearly 50 year history. The Cavs, as they’re known, were named in a contest sponsored by the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper. From 1986-1995 the team made eight playoff appearances behind free throw sharp shooter Mark Price and brad Daugherty. They won the Eastern Conference in 2006-07, falling to the San Antonio Spurs in four games. The Cavs

advanced to the NBA Finals in 2015, losing to the Golden State Warriors 4-2, which they avenged in 2016. The Cavs play in Quicken Loans Arena, which was host to the NBA All Star game in 1997 and is located in downtown Cleveland. For ticketing and more information visit: clevelandcavaliers.com
Cleveland Indians While there isn’t actually a Rick Vaughn pitching for the Tribe, there is still plenty to watch at Progressive Field, formerly know as “The Jake.” (Rick Vaughn is Charlie Sheen’s character in the movie Major League. A must see before any visit to Cleveland! 2016 was an exciting year for the Indians as they made their fifth appearance in the World Series! They ended up losing

the series to the Chicago Cubs after seven exciting games but certainly set the stage for high expectations in 2017. The Cleveland Indians are two time World Series Champions having won the series in 1920 and 1948. They made appearances in the fall classic in 1995 and 1997 in addition to their 2016 run. The Indians were also a late 1990s powerhouse and appeared in the playoffs every year from 1995-1999. Led by Sandy Alomar Jr., Jim Thome and Manny Ramirez they are the only organizations in the last 60 years to score more than 1,000 runs in a season. To this day, the Indians own the most American League Central Division Championships with eight! For ticketing and more information visit: cleveland.indians.mlb.com
Cleveland Browns The Cleveland Browns are four time NFL Champions, most recently in 1964. Their most recent playoff appearance was in 2002 when they lost their rivals the Pittsburgh Steelers. The team is named for their legendary first coach, Paul Brown. Brown led the franchise to a championship in its first year in the NFL, in 1950, and twice more in the same decade, in 1954 and 1955. The Browns won another title in 1964. In 1995, Art Modell, the franchise’s owner for the previous forty years announced he was moving the team to Baltimore. The NFL reluctantly agreed but forced Modell to give up the team’s naming rights, log and history. After ceasing operations for three years from 1996-98, the Browns returned to the NFL in 1999 and made an appearance as an AFC wild card team in 2002. Today, Head Coach Hue Jackson leads the franchise.

In an un-scientific study, BizJournal named the Browns fans the most loyal in all sports, citing attendance numbers versus weather, climate and team record. A testament to their faith, an organization for Browns fans, Browns Backers Worldwide and its more then 100,000 members, is considered the largest sports fan organization in the United States. The Browns franchise has the fourth most players elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Among those are Otto Graham, Paul Brown, Jim Brown and Ozzie Newsome. The movie “The Express,” released in 2008, told the story of Browns running back and the first African American Heisman Trophy winner Ernie Davis. An annual award given to the nation’s best kicker was named after Browns kicker Lou Groza. The Browns play eight home games a year in First Energy Stadium at the North Coast Harbor near the Great Lakes Science Center and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum.
