The Proof Is In The Barrel

One of our area’s most notable products and industries is the manufacturing and distribution of Bourbon. While Bourbon can be made anywhere in the US, it is most commonly associated with Kentucky. It has been estimated that over 90% of all Bourbon produced originates in Kentucky. Only whiskey produced in the United States can carry the name Bourbon. Bourbon was named America’s native spirit by an act of Congress in 1964. The invention of bourbon is subject to many legendary stories and figures, but is very hard to trace to an original source. Distilling was probably brought to present-day Kentucky in the late 18th century by Scots, Scottish-Irish, and other settlers who began to farm the area in earnest. The spirit they made evolved, and became known as bourbon in the early 19th century due to its historical association with the geographic area known as Old Bourbon (this consisted of the original Bourbon County of Virginia, a region that included much of today’s Eastern Kentucky.) Bourbon made for consumption within the United States must meet these requirements: • Only whiskey produced in the United States can be called bourbon. • Bourbon must be made from a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn. The remainder can be a mixture of wheat, rye and/or malted barley. • Bourbon must be distilled to no more than 160 (U.S.) proof (80% alcohol by volume). Bourbon, like other whiskeys, must be bottled at 80 proof or more (40% alcohol by volume.) • Bourbon must be entered into the barrel for aging at no more than 125 proof (62.5% alcohol by volume). • Bourbon must be aged in new, charred white oak barrels.

Bourbon has no minimum specified duration for its aging period, although it must be aged at least briefly. Bourbon labeled as “Straight” bourbon must be aged for at least two years. Fluctuating the percentages of corn, wheat, rye and barley creates the many varieties and flavors found in today’s bourbon. The source of each of these grains and their effect on one another is another part of the formula. Each distillery has their own secret formula and variations to work their magic within these parameters. The formula itself, climate and climate changes as well as barrel storage location will influence the final product, not to mention the length of the barrel aging. All of these factors delicately come together to produce a variety of bourbon flavors. Over the past several years Bourbon’s popularity has outpaced demand and many distillers are working hard to not only deliver more product but also to create and refine new flavors. Jim Beam, has launched a new Single Barrel Bourbon that is their first ever-single barrel offering. Less than 1% of all Jim Beam barrels qualify for this bottling. Each barrel is individually bottled and hand numbered with care to ensure a unique profile and premium quality that make perfectly crafted bourbon. The Proof Is In The Barrel, Cont. on page 26

The Proof Is In The Barrel, Cont. on page 24 Jim Beam Single Barrel is offered at 95 proof as full bodied with sweet, rich, well-balanced attributes of oak, vanilla and caramel. The aroma has a rich, oaky vanilla background with a light spiciness and a golden amber color. Knob Creek’s new Smoked Maple Bourbon brings the full signature flavor of its namesake bourbon together with a touch of maple and hint of smoke for a perfect balance of their signature with just the right amount of sweet. Knob Creek ages their bourbon for a full 9 years and has been long known for their full flavored bourbon. Knob Creek bourbon is named after the creek that ran beside Abraham Lincoln’s childhood home. Evan Williams Black Label, named after Evan Williams who founded Kentucky’s first commercial distillery along the banks of the Ohio River, is produced with the same time honored method Evan Williams mastered years ago. It is an 86 proof bourbon featuring a medium amber color along with a light nose with deep vanilla and mint. You’ll taste notes of oak, brown sugar and caramel and a medium to long finish. For those so inclined, Evan Williams White Label, their signature 100 proof Bottled-in-Bond bourbon, offers a little more kick. Each year their Master Distillers select barrels that meet their exacting standards. These barrels are used for Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage Bourbon, a five-time Whiskey of the Year award winner. Each bottle is marked with the vintage date it was put into oak, as well as the year it was bottled. Barton 1792 Distillery was established in 1879 and continues today as the oldest fully operating distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky. Situated in heart of bourbon country on 196 acres, the Distillery boasts 29-barrel aging warehouses, 22 other buildings including an impressive still house, and the legendary Tom Moore Spring. Their bourbon was named in honor of the year Kentucky joined the United States, Barton 1792.

Barton 1792 is a distinctly different bourbon crafted with precise craftsmanship made from a signature “high rye” recipe and the marriage of select barrels carefully chosen by their Master Distiller. 1792 Bourbon has an expressive and elegant flavor profile. Unmistakable spice mingles with sweet caramel and vanilla to create a bourbon that is brash and bold, yet smooth and balanced Willett Distillery is responsible for many excellent bourbon labels including Noah’s Mill, Rowans Creek, Old Bardstown, Johnny Drum and of course several Willett bourbons. Willett broke ground on their family owned Bardstown Distillery in 1936 and has been producing fine bourbons ever since. The Willett Pot Still Reserve is one of their most popular bourbons and its nose is vanilla lemon cake, while the palate is a balance of caramel, vanilla, spices and citrus. The opulent bottle is modeled from their own, one of a kind, Copper Pot Still and has been named “The Sexiest Bourbon Bottle.” With bourbon’s increasing popularity, many local companies such as Bourbon Barrel Foods have come up with very innovative and tasty ways to utilize leftover bourbon barrels. New bourbon-influenced products are being introduced regularly. As you travel throughout the area you will certainly notice the prevalence and availability of more brands of bourbon than anywhere else in the world. Take advantage and sample some of the world’s finest bourbon while you’re here. America’s Only Micro-brewed Soy Sauce In the condiment world, a lot of time is spent concocting new recipes and perfecting flavor combinations. Matt Jamie keeps it simple. Simple and handcrafted. While many were content to spend just a few gratuitous seconds removing the lid of a soy sauce bottle or opening a to-go packet, Matt Jamie looked closer. And closer. With fresh eyes. And wondered “What If....?” Reaching back to his years spent in Louisville, Kentucky, Matt began to notice the parallels between soy sauce brewing and small batch bourbon distilling. And an idea was born. Non-GMO soybeans were acquired, soft red winter wheat was located and the very best limestone-filtered Kentucky

spring water was purchased at the source. Oh, and a few bourbon barrels - which had just been emptied after years of holding Kentucky’s best bourbons - were brought back to our soy sauce brewery in the Butchertown area of Louisville, Kentucky. A blond-haired guy from Kentucky brewing soy sauce? Oh, yes! America’s ONLY microbrewed Soy Sauce: Bluegrass Soy Sauce. More soy sauce is spilled in a day by the “big guys” than we make in a year. Huber’s Starlight Distillery: Indiana’s Contribution to the Craft Spirit Boom

Starlight Distillery was established in 2001, beginning with brandy distilling. It was a thoughtful decision to produce spirits in the Huber family winery, established in the 1970’s, as a natural extension of their very popular wine production. The law allowing distilleries to produce grain-based, in addition to fruit-based, spirits went into effect in Indiana in 2014. At that time, Huber’s added a new building with the latest distilling equipment and Starlight began producing grain spirits! The first full year of production, 2015, they included bourbon, malt, and rye whiskies, as well as rum and vodka. The initial releases of bourbon were distilled on a Christian

Carl 80 gallon pot brandy still. Outside of brandies and gins, Starlight spirits are now distilled on a 500-gallon Vendome pot. The distillery is located in the knobs of Southern Indiana, in Clark County, just a few minutes from anywhere in the Louisville area. The Winery and Distillery sit in the middle of 650+ acres of fruit trees, vineyards, pumpkin patches, strawberries, bramble fruits, and vegetables. Whiskey corn is also grown on the property. Not a fan of spirits? Try one of over 40 Huber Winery wines! The winery opened in 1978 and has been producing award-winning wines ever since. These wines are some of the most popular in the area and have a tremendous local following. Come out and visit the loft tasting bar to sample wines and spirits and take a tour of their production facility and see how their wines and spirits are produced. Distillery Tours are offered daily at 11 am and 2 pm, and do require a reservation. Huber’s has something for everyone, young and old. Even for the under 21 crowd, there are fun things to do such as our Family Farm Park, Farm Market, Ice Cream & Cheese shop, and more! The Derby City

hurchill Downs, along with its Twin Spires, is one of Louisville’s most recognized landmarks. The first Kentucky Derby was held here when the facility opened in 1875. The 2018 race on May 5th will be the 144th consecutive running!

The Kentucky Derby is often referred to as the “Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” and as the “Run for the Roses” signifying the famous blanket of roses draped over the winning horse. The Derby is also the first leg of the United States Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing. The Preakness and then the Belmont Stakes follow. The Kentucky Derby is a Grade 1 stakes race for threeyear-old Thoroughbreds. Held the first Saturday of every May, it is 1 ¼ mile long. The Kentucky Oaks is Thoroughbred racing’s most prestigious event for 3 year-old-fillies and is run each year the day before the Kentucky Derby. The Kentucky Derby is one of the most exciting events held anywhere in the world. Racing fans and celebrities from all over the world convene upon Louisville for several days anticipating the big event. Many traditions such as colorful Derby hats and tasty Mint Juleps are celebrated along with the race itself. Attending the Kentucky Derby is a unique experience that will leave you with memories lasting a lifetime!

Kentucky Derby Museum: Barn & Backside Tour

by Joey Yazell

When the topic of Kentucky finds its way into a conversation, one of the first things that come up is usually the Kentucky Derby. Known as the “Greatest Two Minutes in Sports,” this title comes with plenty of fascinating history that extends far deeper than what most of us are familiar with; the Mint Juleps, My Old Kentucky Home, and a lively infield. But what many of us don’t know is what goes on along the backside of the track at Churchill Downs during racing sessions before and after the Kentucky Derby. Fortunately, visitors can get a true behind-the-scenes racing experience, thanks to the Kentucky Derby Museum, which offers a variety of van and walking tours that showcase the various layers of activities that come together to provide the total racing experience at Churchill Downs. I recently went on the Kentucky Derby Museum’s Barn and Backside Van Tour at Churchill Downs Racetrack, which gives you a first-hand look into the world of Thoroughbred racing. Here, you’ll discover the unique character and life force of racing at Churchill Downs, get a feel for all of the inner workings of everyday life and - of course - Kentucky Derby Day. You may even get a glimpse of Thoroughbreds training on the track during your tour. Each Barn and Backside van tour is hosted by highly knowledgeable guides that are both funny and insightful. The route takes you underneath and all around the legendary track and also to the backside. You’ll learn all kinds of interesting facts along the way. For example, did you know that the track goes down 25 feet below the racing surface? The Historic Walking Tour takes you to the Paddock, giving you amazing views of the famous Twin Spires, and out to see views of the historic racetrack. The guides on the walking tour are lots of fun and are happy to answer any

38

and all questions you might have before they take you to see the Museum’s resident Thoroughbred and mini-horse, Winston, in the garden stable area just outside of the Kentucky Derby Museum and Derby Café. After absorbing the tours of Churchill Downs, you can try your luck jockeying for first on a race simulator, or place some bets on races from back in the day in the Kentucky Derby Museum. But most importantly, be sure to check out the signature exhibit, “The Greatest Race.” This 360-degree movie about the life of a Derby horse will send chills down your spine. The 18-minute movie is in one of the only 360 degree 4k ultra HD theatres in the world at the Kentucky Derby Museum. After the movie, you can also browse lots of interactive exhibits including changing temporary exhibits and plenty of others on both floors of the museum that provide additional insight into what makes Thoroughbred racing such a fascinating sport. Experiencing the Barn and Backside Van Tour at Churchill Downs and the Historic Walking Tour, both offered by the Kentucky Derby Museum, gives participants a real appreciation for the Kentucky Derby, the Churchill Downs Racetrack and its deep history. In fact, the Museum is the only place in the world where you can experience the excitement of Kentucky Derby day, every day! www.derbymuseum.org

Focus On The Fillies

Since 1875 the 1-1/8-mile Kentucky Oaks stakes race has been held each year at Churchill Downs on the Friday before the Kentucky Derby, which is always held the first Saturday in May. Unlike the Derby, entry in the Kentucky Oaks is reserved exclusively for the world’s top 14 three-year-old Thoroughbred fillies with the highest earnings. This field of fillies races for an impressive $1 million guaranteed purse to the delight of record crowds of more than 100,000 spectators each year and the event consistently ranks among the most popular horse races in the world. The number of attendees at The Oaks typically surpasses the attendance of all other stakes races except the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, often topping even the Belmont and the Breeders’ Cup. Traditionally, The Oaks has always been a held a special place in the hearts of locals, who come out in large numbers to attend the race, and many local schools are closed that day for an “administrative holiday.” Often called the “Race for the Lilies,” the stargazer lily is the official flower of the Kentucky Oaks, making pink the preferred color in both men’s and women’s fashion. The color pink is also part of the track’s “Think Pink” initiative, which is part of an ongoing partnership with cancer fighting charities like Bright Pink and Horses and Hope. In fact, Churchill Downs has been actively involved in the battle against breast cancer since 2009 and is pleased to be part of such a major fund raising program in support of prevention and early detection of these diseases. As on Derby Day, spectators come out to the track for the Oaks to enjoy the festivities wearing their finest

40

attire and most elaborate fancy hats. Festivities always start on Oaks Day with a parade, a fashion show, a highly entertaining Hat Parade and - of course - a mint julep or two! Despite the growing number of visitors from out of state who come to the Kentucky Oaks and the Derby each year, the Oaks has always been considered a local event among Louisvillians. Millionaires Row is another exciting part of The Oaks, so be sure to keep an eye out for the many celebrities who come to town each year for this special day. Of course, the infield crows are always entertaining to watch - either up close or from the stands - and numerous musical attractions, games, food and other vendors are located throughout the grounds and infield. Potential entries for this Grade 1 stakes race are selected based on the results of more than 70 graded stakes races held worldwide over a 10-month period. Fillies are permitted to enter the Derby instead should they qualify, but must earn their way to the field just like the colts and geldings. This careful selection process is part of what makes the Kentucky Oaks such an essential part of the most exciting weekend in horse racing and a true “don’t miss” event for anyone planning a visit to Louisville, Kentucky.

A Must-Do Derby Experience! There’s much, much more to a visit to Churchill Downs than just a seat in the grandstands! The history of the track and the Kentucky Derby is quite lengthy and the stories they tell are fascinating and captivating. The Kentucky Derby Museum offers a variety of very informative tours of Churchill Downs as well as several interactive exhibits that take you up close and personal to all aspects of the Derby experience. You can literally spend an entire day getting an inside look at The “Greatest Two Minutes in Sports”™! No trip to Churchill Downs is complete without a stop at Wagner’s Pharmacy. Located across the street from the infield gates on S. 4th St, Wagner’s has been a favorite of locals and visitors for several generations. Wagner’s serves as a diner, fountain and souvenir gift shop. In addition to providing custom made jockey silks and other tack products, Wagner’s is also famous for their Racehorse Liniment. Stop in to hang with the regulars, grab some lunch or breakfast at the diner and you’ll take home one of the best Derby “souvenirs” available. A visit to the Kentucky Derby and Churchill Downs is a very excitivg way to spend your day in Louisville and a stop at Wagner’s before or after makes it a complete experience.

Throughout the grandstands you’ll find attendees dressed to the nines just for this special day! To match the Derby hats, men and women alike utilize their best fashion skills! Some outfits are formal, some are entertaining but all are unique and attention getting. You’ll find as many fabulous photos in the press of our dressed up race fans as you will of the Thoroughbreds running in the race on the days following the Derby and Oaks. The patio at Levee at the River House

ouisville is known for its diverse dining options. Internationally and nationally-trained chefs flock to Louisville to practice what they’ve learned in the kitchen, often translating their visions into their own eateries. These entrepreneurial chefs have established boutique restaurants throughout the city, and many are part of the movement to use seasonal, locally-grown produce, poultry and meats.

National Geographic, Zagat, Travel + Leisure and members of the International Association of Culinary Professionals have all ranked Louisville as one of the toprated foodie destinations in the world. Ethnic fare abounds from Thai, Greek, Vietnamese, Cuban and Indian to the more standard Italian, Chinese, French, German and Mexican. The authentic flavors of dozens of countries are available. If the view out the window is as important as the food on the table, choose from the more than a dozen restaurants on both banks of the river with a view of the Louisville skyline or the Indiana shore. Stay downtown, head up or downstream of the city, enjoy fine dining or picnic fare, and find restaurants with a great view of the mighty Ohio. Why limit yourself to one style of cuisine when there are over 2,500 restaurants available? From country cooking served family style to haute cuisine, formal courses to alfresco finger food, downtown to uptown — Louisville’s got it.

John Varanese: A Unique Culinary Talent John Varanese relocated to Louisville from Charleston, South Carolina in 1998 when he was hired by local favorite Azalea to be their Executive Chef. By 2008, he was opening his namesake restaurant Varanese on historic Frankfort Avenue. He is currently one of the area’s premier chefs, and his restaurants have become dining destinations that have drawn huge crowds each year. He had set his sights on a riverside dining experience on the Ohio River as far back as 2004. It took until 2016 for those plans to come to fruition as River House Restaurant and Raw Bar and Levee at the River House. Starting out washing dishes for a Mom & Pop restaurant at the age of 13, John began cooking shortly after he was hired, and by age 15 he was running the kitchen. By 16, he knew he wanted to own his own restaurant and he soon enrolled at Johnson & Wales University South Carolina. John has a genuine passion for cooking and considers the culinary landscape his playground. “I love playing with new and different ingredients to create something new and seeing how much customers enjoy my creations,” he recently shared. He has a passion for featuring locally sourced products and he also highlights the use of bourbon in his menus and restaurant décor. His first restaurant, Varanese, features menu items such as the crabstuffed avocado, pulled pork and sweet potato biscuit, bourbon barrel smoked pork chop, caramelized orange bourbon salmon and bread pudding. An extensive wine and bourbon list and creative cocktails are offered as the perfect compliment to any menu choice. River House Restaurant & Raw Bar features regional cuisine with Southern flair and an emphasis on fresh seafood and a raw bar.

Menu highlights include grilled oysters, a grilled romaine salad, crispy Grouper cheeks and a Maker’s Mark bourbon barrel smoked salmon. Each meal is preceded by a complimentary cast iron skillet cornbread with whipped butter. The River House features a two tier outdoor patio overlooking the Ohio River and a stunning floor-to-ceiling glass wall overlooking the back patio and riverfront if you prefer to dine indoors. The Levee at the River House, an indoor and outdoor bar located next door, in the same building, boasts the same expansive views and patios on the river. The menu offers small plates, including tacos, sliders, oysters and flatbreads. Levee also features live entertainment five nights a week from both local bands and nationally touring acts. Of course, both the River House and Levee also feature extensive wine and bourbon lists and very relaxed atmosphere to go along with either. River House was voted “Best New Restaurant in Louisville” by Louisville Magazine readers and “Best New Restaurant” by LEO Weekly readers in 2016. Along with several other “Best Of” awards over the years, Varanese was voted “Best Restaurant in Clifton/ Crescent Hill” by Louisville Magazine readers in 2017. John Varanese takes pride in setting and exceeding high standards at all of his restaurants and he invites you to visit during your trip to Louisville. You’re guaranteed a great meal and a great time too! For more information please visit: riverhouselouisville.com, leveerestaurant.com varanese.com

Anthony Lama - Seviche, A Latin Restaurant

Louisville has gained a national reputation as one of the best foodie destinations in the country. Nearly any list of foodie destinations will mention Louisville as a must-do! For the second consecutive year over 16 restaurants opened in the area! National Geographic, Zagat, Travel + Leisure and members of the International Association of Culinary Professionals have all ranked Louisville as one of the top-rated foodie destinations in the world. With the huge number of great dining options throughout the area, competition is at a very high level bringing out the best in everyone. The vast array of cuisines, dining settings and culinary influences come together to form one of the country’s most diverse and exciting dining scenes. To provide some perspective on how and why Louisville has become the dining destination it has, we talked to several area chefs and restaurant owners to relate their experience for our hotel guests. When it comes to a love of cooking, most of our chefs indicated they had experience early in life that made them appreciate the art of a good meal. Chef Eric Shaw of Jack Fry’s, was introduced to the joy of cooking by his mother and grandmother who were both excellent cooks. Chef Matt Weber, of Uptown Cafe, began as a photography student at the University of Louisville but soon discovered his love of cooking while working at Cafe Metro, a local favorite, which was right across the street from his current gig at Uptown Cafe. Chef Anthony Lamas, of Seviche, grew up appreciating his mother’s unique Latino flavors and developed a love for food and cooking. Chef Zac Young of Marketplace Restaurant at Theater Square also grew up cooking with his mother and still cooks with her for holiday events. 56

Dallas McGarity, proprietor of The Fat Lamb, started as a dishwasher at a Country Club in South Carolina at age 15. His love of cooking sprouted from the staff there cooking and eating a big lunch together on Sundays. Chef Steve Gustafson, who will begin his tenure at the new Omni Louisville Downtown hotel in March 2018, mentioned he enjoyed family meals together which they shared no matter how busy everyone was at the time. Volare’s Joshua Moore was introduced to cooking by both of his grandmothers and was known to change the channel from cartoons to cooking shows as early as Kindergarten! Louisville might not be the first city that comes to mind when considering a restaurant venture. However, Louisville has attracted some of the best! The many local chefs held in such high regard have helped to attract new restaurateurs. Chef Andrew Hubbard of Martini Italian Bistro, came back home at his mother’s request and ended up getting married and starting a family. Chef John Varanese, proprietor of Varanese as well as the River House Restaurant & Raw Bar and Levee at River House was imported by long time local favorite, Azalea, from Charleston, South Carolina. One of the things we found common amongst the chefs we spoke with was their desire to express themselves in an artful THECITIVIEW.COM

It is difficult to track down the exact beginnings of the Margarita cocktail. There are several stories…all completely different…connecting the Margarita to its Mexican origins. Legends do point to it being originated in the late 1930’s and Jose Cuervo was known to have run the first advertisement for the Margarita in 1945. The basic Margarita ingredients consist of: Tequila, Triple Sec and Lime Juice served in a salt-rimmed glass. Variations of this theme along with the use of various qualities of liquor can impact the flavor and consistency of the Margarita …for better or worse. We all have our favorite recipe and/or watering hole to enjoy these delicious concoctions. For a new and very bold twist on this traditional drink, Wild Rita’s has gone the extra mile in creating their signature “Wild Rita.” The one and only Wild Rita is made “au natural” with 100% Agave, Jose Cuervo Traditional Silver Tequila, Grand Marnier, freshly squeezed lime juice and natural agave. (No syrup used here!) To make it even bolder and over the top, the Wild Rita is set on fire at the table as you’re being served. Certainly unforgettable and it tastes even better than it sounds…or looks! In keeping with the big and bold theme, Wild Rita’s dining room features Chihuly inspired bright colored blown glass made locally by Flame Run Glass Studio and Gallery as well as brightly decorated tables, chairs and walls. This Over the Top modern Mexican and tequila bar is home to a special and exclusive Margarita menu including 7 House Specialty Margaritas. The Highlands

The Highlands is one of Louisville’s most unique and exciting destinations. You’ll find a long list of retailers and restaurants catering to nearly every style and taste. If you’re looking for an unforgettable and unique day or evening spent shopping and dining or just relaxing and getting a feel for the city’s personality, this is the perfect place. The Highlands neighborhood is so named because it sits atop a ridge between the middle and south forks of Beargrass Creek. The center of activity is focused along a three mile stretch of Bardstown Road that starts at the intersection of E. Broadway and Barrett Ave just a few blocks east of downtown Louisville and runs south to Taylorsville Road. Many of Louisville’s most interesting and unique retail shops and boutiques are to be found in the Highlands. It seems no two are alike and you’ll find plenty of things to peruse as you casually stroll down Bardstown Rd.

Cool Shops. Classic Street. Follow sou4th:

The Sou4th district, Louisville’s historic center of retail and entertainment, is undergoing a vibrant era of revitalization. Located on 4th Street between Muhammad Ali Boulevard and Broadway, Sou4th is now home to innovative and locally-owned retail shops, art galleries, entertainment venues, historic and new hotels and unique dining destinations. In the 1950’s, this area of Downtown was the city’s center of retail activity, however, the history of local shopping dates back to the beginning of the last century. Today, you’ll find a chocolatier and confectioner, an innovative new retail and community space for local artists, locally designed and created jewelry, artisan craft, candles and home goods, fabulous clothing and accessories, handbags, contemporary and traditional décor and fine art galleries. On Sou4th, the splendor of yesteryear is combined with the modern charm of Art Eatables Chocolatier, Aethestics in Jewelry, Sicilian Pizza & Pasta, Craft(s) Gallery & Mercantile, The Mysterious Rack, Block Party Handmade Boutique, Cellar Door Chocolates, Big City Styles, Modern Trousseau, Regalo and Gifthorse. Evenings come alive with dynamic music acts at The Palace Theatre and the Mercury Ballroom. Sou4th is a large part of the city’s Republic Bank First Friday Hop on the all-new ZeroBus. Held on the first Friday of each month, The Hop is free and open to the public. The ZeroBus stops along the route of Market, Main and Fourth Streets. Explore Sou4th shops that offer extended hours, product and menu specials. Sou4th is often home to a number of street festivals throughout the year, including the annual Day of the Dead Celebration which takes place the first Friday in November. Thousands of revelers enjoy great local cultural food, entertainment and activities in the middle of the street. With a new 234-unit apartment building slated to open in 2018, South Fou4th is poised to continue its revitalization with the addition of more restaurants, bars, and local retail.

Forecastle Festival

by Joey Yazell

Our much-loved Forecastle Festival, an annual nauticalthemed weekend of music, art, and sustainability, featured some of the best local talent and local food the Derby City has to offer at one of the best music festivals in Louisville, Kentucky. Bands like Twin Limb and Quiet Hollers, who are hot off of the release of their new album Amen Breaks, paired with bourbon slushies and Red Top Hotdogs at local food vendors, all worked to entertain Festival goers from all across the country at one of the best Louisville music festivals of 2017. Everyone in attendance at Forecastle 2017 enjoyed the great views of downtown Louisville and the Ohio River alongside a killer lineup that included some of the best music out there today. “The food and people watching is something I always look forward to, but most definitely the local artists is something you certainly don’t want to miss,” said Sylvan Ryder, a native Kentuckian who came to Louisville to attend Forecastle from Lexington. “I’ve come to Forecastle for the last three years and I love it! I really enjoy the urban setting of this festival and all the bands they have play. Louisville is a great city and has a lot to offer, and the annual Forecastle Festival is one of those many great things.”
