Make the blink of an eye last a little longer. Ohio’s Lake Erie Shores & Islands has a way of finding what’s important, and slowing it down a little. If time is measured in minutes, Shores & Islands time is measured in moments. With world-famous theme parks and water parks, sandy beaches and coastal adventures – you’ll have plenty of moments to choose from. But the best ones usually come out of the blue.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

n 1983, leaders in the music industry joined together to establish the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation in New York City to celebrate the music and musicians that changed the world. The first induction ceremony was held in 1986.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum opened its doors in 1995 on the shores of Lake Erie in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Its mission is to engage, teach and inspire through the power of rock & roll. Cleveland ranked first in a public poll conducted by USA Today asking where the Hall of Fame should be located. After much competition and many visits to potential sites by Foundation members, Cleveland was chosen as the permanent home for the Rock Hall in 1986. Along with the voice of the public, there is much history of rock and roll in Cleveland. Deejay Alan Freed first coined the term “rock and roll” on his Cleveland station WJW in the early 1950’s and the first rock and roll concert was held in the city soon thereafter. On June 7, 1993, ground was broken for the Museum in Cleveland and in September of 1995 and after 12 years in the making, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame opened its doors. It is the world’s first museum dedicated to the living heritage of rock and roll music. The Museum features dynamic interactive exhibits, intimate performance spaces and presents a rotation of artifact and costume displays from the museum’s permanent

collection. Exhibits showcase specific eras, styles and milestones, as well as highlight the many facets of rock and roll’s evolution. The Museum’s exhibits are designed to provide the visitor with a unique, interactive experience. The collection of artifacts and stage costumes is enhanced by the combination of state-ofthe-art technology and innovative film and video. The Rock Hall offers a comprehensive retrospective on rock and roll’s origins, development, legends and immense impact on global culture. The Museum presents public programming, including the popular Hall of Fame Series, which regularly features Hall of Fame inductees in an informal interview and performance setting. The annual American Music Masters Series is dedicated to the exploration of an early influence inductee’s music and enduring impact on popular music. Since the Museum’s opening, the Rock Hall has welcomed more than twelve million visitors from around the world and reaches more than 50,000 students and educators each year through its education programs on site and at great distances. In 2012, the Rock Hall opened its Library and Archives – the world’s first of its kind – in downtown Cleveland, as well.

FOOTBALL FUN FOR EVERYONE

Ra’Nesha “Queen Thrifty” Springer www.queenthrifty.com

Recently my family took a road trip to Canton, Ohio to visit the Pro Football Hall of Fame. As huge fans of the game, this was an item at the top of our bucket list. I’m so excited we were able to create long-lasting memories while exploring history. The Hall of Fame has fun activities for all ages. The Hall represents its sport in many colorful and entertaining ways with a multitude of interactive experiences. We fell in love with the following exhibits highlighted at the Pro Football Hall of Fame: “A Game for Life,” a multi-sensory immersive theater featuring holographic representations of Hall of Fame legends. A Game for Life exhibit displayed holographic versions of famous figures such as Vince Lombardi. The exhibition theater uses 15 projectors and 360-degree audio creating a fully captivating experience. The “Pro Football Today Gallery,” is filled with mementos from recent history-making performances and milestone moments from the current NFL season. Within this make sure to take a moment to enjoy the smack talking inside the huddles and on the field when you grab a seat in front of the big screen where you are given an insider’s look at some hilarious mic’d up moments. The Super Bowl Theater, a turntable experience presents the most recent NFL season and Super Bowl using cutting-edge technology. Walk through the game day highlights from kick-off to the winning gameplay. Come and witness the Superbowl like never before, then head on over and grab a photo with the Vince Lombardi trophy. Enjoy interactive, hands-on experiences such as the

Madden EA Sports video game suite. This suite has all the amenities a gamer could ask for in one location. On display are all the Madden games dating back to the Sega Genesis to present. Kick back and enjoy a quick game at one of the multiple Xbox 360 stations. We had a wonderful time learning the history of the football helmet, exploring the hall of fame gallery, strolling through the legends of the game in the bronze bust gallery, creating our own world championship rings, and taking most of day to enjoy the Pro Football Hall of Fame. From the youngest to the oldest, we all found something that made the day extra special. We even stopped by the team shop and purchased souvenirs on the way out. Since opening in 1963, the Pro Football Hall of Fame has grown in both size and stature. The building was expanded in 1971, 1978 and 1995, and completed major exhibit gallery renovations in 2003, 2008, and 2009. Together, these improvements have transformed the Hall of Fame museum into an exciting internationally recognized institution and travel destination For more information please visit: ProFootballHOF.com

Explore Little Italy I

n the mid-1800’s, Italian sculpture Joseph Carrabelli began his famous granite and marble works at the top of the “hill” on Mayfield Rd. The area between the railroad and the top of the “hill” became home to Carrabelli and the many Italian families that came to Cleveland to work, and Little Italy was born. Today the traditions hold strong with the rich cultural heritage and the spirit of artistry that Joseph Carrabelli began more than 130 years ago.

44

Currently, more than 20 galleries, 15 restaurants, many professional-service businesses, two schools and Holy Rosary Church thrive in this village. Known for its Art Galleries and the finest Italian cuisine, Little Italy is host to the City’s famous Art Walks, The Feast of the Assumption, the Columbus Day Parade, Taste of Little Italy, Bocce Tournament and incredible Alfresco Summer Nights! Historic Little Italy in Cleveland, Ohio is located adjacent to the city’s cultural district, University Circle. The Flats

T

he area near downtown better known as “The Flats” has been an integral part of the city’s history since its very beginning and continues to be a nerve center of activity and development today. In 1796, the city’s founder, Moses Cleaveland and his survey party landed on this area that borders both sides of the Cuyahoga River at the Lake Erie shore front on the north side of downtown. The Flats was home to Cleveland’s industrial district and steel mills that located there to capitalize on the Great Lakes shipping routes until the 1970’s. With the demise of the steel industry, many of the abandoned warehouses were renovated and The Flats became a hub of nightclubs and various entertainment destinations in the 1980’s and 1990’s. At its peak in the early 1990’s, The Flats were home to the highest concentration of bars in the Midwest. After a period of quiet since the mid 90’s the Flats is now being redeveloped and features some of downtown Cleveland’s most exciting entertainment options.

“So much fun every time.”

“Love this bar!”

“Guaranteed good time.”

Flats East Bank

Flats West Bank

The Flats is divided into two distinctive areas occupying both sides of the Cuyahoga River: The East and West Banks. The East Bank is closest to downtown and is quickly becoming a business and lifestyle landmark. Located between the western edge of the Warehouse District along W. 10th St and the Cuyahoga River the Flats East Bank features new hotels, several restaurants, residential living and a 1,000-foot long boardwalk along the banks of the Cuyahoga River. This area is a nerve center of new development and is attracting a lot of attention locally and nationally. The Flats East Bank offers a lifestyle all its own with unique options you can’t find anywhere else in the city. Exciting destinations such as The Big Bang Dueling Piano Bar have recently chosen to locate in the neighborhood. The restaurants and entertainment facilities locating in this area are upscale, modern and offer the local flavors and personality of Cleveland’s nationally recognized and rapidly growing foodie scene. Rivergate Park was developed by the Cleveland Rowing Foundation to accommodate canoeing, kayaking and dragon boating and also calls the Flats East Bank home. This fabulous park provides an excellent opportunity to experience great views of the city while relaxing in one of the city’s most historic areas. The Crooked River Skate Park is located in Rivergate Park as well. This state of the art course is open year round and in all types of weather. Experienced skateboarders claim the weather variations make the course even more fun! Look for several new retailers and restaurants to call the Flats East Bank home in 2018! For more information on the Flats East Bank please visit: flatseastbank.com

The West Bank has been established a bit longer then the East bank and is home to several businesses that have been located there for many years. The Nautica Entertainment Complex, Jacobs Pavilion, the Greater Cleveland Aquarium and the Nautica Queen cruise ship have all called the West Bank home for some time. The FirstEnergy Powerhouse, a former power station located between the Jacobs Pavilion and the Nautica Queen base, has been transformed to host a few major local attractions and restaurants. It is home to the Greater Cleveland Aquarium, the Nautica Café, and Windows on the River and all together these three destinations provide a fun family adventure in one location. This area has recently been named the Nautica Entertainment District. Recently, the Steelyard Commons was developed near the West Bank just south of the downtown area and features a wide array of retail, restaurants and even a 1-mile stretch of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath. Many family friendly events are held here throughout the year as well. There are numerous restaurants and nightclubs located here that offer many excellent entertainment and dining options. Many of the best and most memorable skyline shots of downtown Cleveland have been taken from the West Bank. For more information on the Flats West Bank please visit: thisiscleveland.com

On our recent visit we experienced several dishes being prepared and were deeply impressed with the thought, care and detail that went into every plate. The entrées at Cru are “Fully Plated” and dressed, meaning that when you order an entrée they’ll come complete with veggies and sides. No need to order a la carte. Cru sources produce from local farms and all menu items are made from scratch. None of their food is frozen. None of their food contains MSG and they only use the finest cooking oils to ensure the best flavor and that the meal will be the healthiest it can be.

Cru Uncorked Has A Comprehensive Wine and Champagne List Chris Oppewall, president of Cru Uncorked, is in charge of the wine selection as well as training the staff to learn and appreciate the nuances of all wine to ensure they can be the best resource for you possible. The wine focus at Cru Uncorked is certainly French, and their selection is extensive. However, they also feature the best wines from other parts of the world including California, Italian, Spanish, Australia and other parts of the Southern Hemisphere. Cru has created a wine selection from which there are no bad choices. Cru also hosts fabulous and educational Wine Dinners, tastings, instructional speakers and many other wine centered events throughout the year. As the team had planned, a visit to Cru Uncorked is a complete experience and true adventure in dining, not to mention a great way to immerse yourself in French culture.

Celebrating The Game!

leveland is home to three professional sports franchises: The Cleveland Browns (NFL), Cleveland Indians (MLB) and Cleveland Cavaliers (NBA). The Lake Erie Monsters represent Cleveland in the American Hockey League while the Cleveland Gladiators are members of the Arena Football League. Needless to say, Cleveland is a booming sports town! Between all of these teams, there are games scheduled all year long and chances are you’ll find at least one of these teams playing at home during your visit.

Cleveland Cavaliers The Cavaliers have undergone several personnel changes during the 2017 and 2018 seasons. Most notably the Lebron James move to the La Lakers after leading the 2016 team as they brought home Cleveland’s first NBA title in the team’s history! The Cavs won a 7 game series against the Golden State Warriors after coming back from a 3-1 deficit. The only time the feat has been achieved in NBA history! LeBron has moved on to play with the Lakers, but the Cavs still thrill Clevelanders with exciting play. The Cleveland Cavaliers joined the NBA as an expansion team in 1970 and have made 20 playoff appearances in their nearly 50 year history. From 1986-1995 the team made eight playoff appearances behind free throw sharp shooter Mark Price and Brad Daugherty. The Cavs play in Quicken Loans Arena, which was host to the NBA All Star game in 1997 and is located in downtown Cleveland. For ticketing and more information visit: clevelandcavaliers.com

Cleveland Indians In 2017 the Indians set an American League and Major League Baseball record by winning 22 consecutive games with no ties. 2016 was also an exciting year for the Indians as they made their fifth appearance in the World Series! They ended up losing the series to the Chicago Cubs after seven exciting games but certainly set the stage for high expectations for further years. The Cleveland Indians are two time World Series Champions having won the series in 1920 and 1948. They made appearances in the fall classic in 1995 and 1997 in addition to their 2016 run. To this day, the Indians own the most American League Central Division Championships with eight! For ticketing and more information visit: cleveland.indians.mlb.com

Cleveland Browns The Cleveland Browns are four time NFL Champions, most recently in 1964. Their most recent playoff appearance was in 2002 when they lost two of their rivals to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 2018 team had a record of 7-8-1 to finish 3rd in the AFC North division. The noted improvement in performance over recent seasons has their fans looking forward to a potentially exciting 2019 season. The team is named for their legendary first coach, Paul Brown. Brown led the franchise to a championship in its first year in the NFL, in 1950, and twice more in the same decade, in 1954 and 1955. The Browns won another title in 1964.

THECITIVIEW.COM

In an un-scientific study, BizJournal named the Browns fans the most loyal in all sports, citing attendance numbers versus weather, climate and team record. A testament to their faith, an organization for Browns fans, Browns Backers Worldwide and its more then 100,000 members, is considered the largest sports fan organization in the United States. The Browns franchise has the fourth most players elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Among those are Otto Graham, Paul Brown, Jim Brown and Ozzie Newsome. The Browns play eight home games a year in First Energy Stadium at the North Coast Harbor near the Great Lakes Science Center and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum. For ticketing and more information visit: clevelandbrowns.com

Cleveland Monsters Currently in their twelfth season, the Cleveland Monsters are proud members of the American Hockey League (AHL) as the developmental affiliate of the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Columbus Blue Jackets. The Monsters are part of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Quicken Loans Arena organization and are owned by a group led by Cavaliers Majority Owner and Quicken Loans Founder and Chairman Dan Gilbert. In 2015-16, the Monsters went on a 15-2 run in the Calder Cup Playoffs, finishing a sweep of the Hershey Bears in Game 4 in front of a sell-out crowd of 19,665 people at Quicken Loans Arena. Eventual series MVP Oliver Bjorkstrand scored the game-winning goal with 1.8 seconds left in overtime to give Cleveland their first Championship since 1964. Mr. Rock and Roll

From his seat behind the microphone at WJW Radio in Cleveland and, later, WINS Radio, deejay Alan Freed did more to spread the gospel of rock and roll during its infancy than any other non-performer. Born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and raised in Salem, Ohio, Freed came to WJW as host of a classical music show in February, 1951. He befriended Leo Mintz, owner of Record Rendezvous, a store on Prospect Avenue in downtown Cleveland. Legend has it that Mintz told Freed that numerous white kids were buying black R&B records at his store and convinced Freed to begin playing R&B records on WJW. On the evening of July 11, 1951, Freed’s R&B show made its debut on WJW. Soon, Freed adopted a new persona – the Moondog, a crazed hipster who talked over the music, howled, pounded on phone books and banged on a cowbell. “Hello everybody,” Freed would say. “How ya’ll tonight? This is Alan Freed, the ol’ King of the Moondoggers, and its time for some blues and rhythm records for all the gang in the Moondog Kingdom.” By the following January, Freed’s show was causing a stir in Cleveland, and other stations began adding R&B to their play lists. Then on March 21, 1952, Freed, Mintz and Lew Platt, a booking agent and promoter, put on the Moondog Coronation Ball at the old Cleveland Arena on Euclid Avenue. A landmark event in the birth of rock and roll, the Coronation Ball was intended as an R&B concert staring the Dominoes, Paul Williams and Varetta Dillard. Despite the fact that the

72

concert was only advertised on Freed’s radio show, nearly 20,000 people, mostly black, showed up – twice the capacity of the Arena. They crashed through the doors, knocking down ticket takers and ushers and by 11:30, the police and fire departments had closed down the show. The riot became national news, and Freed’s popularity escalated. Many now cite the Coronation Ball as the first rock and roll concert and, indeed, it many have been. But even more important, as another Cleveland deejay, Bill Randle, pointed out, was the fact that “it was the beginning of the acceptance of black popular music as a force in radio. It was the first big show of its kind where the industry saw it as big business.” Freed eventually moved to New York, where he grew in national prominence as he continued to promote rock and roll, via his radio show, television, movies and all-star concerts at Brooklyn’s Paramount Theatre. By 1956, Freed was known throughout the country, and he was arguably rock and roll’s bestknown booster. But by the end of the Fifties, he was a major target of the payola investigation, charged with illegally taking money in exchange for playing certain records. He eventually relocated to the West Coast, where he died in 1965. Alan Freed was inducted into the inaugural class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.

One last look.....

Mr. Brainwash Thierry Guetta, internationally known as Mr. Brainwash, followed and documented street artists on film beginning in 1999, ultimately filming the most famous street artist: Banksy. At the encouragement of Banksy, Guetta began creating his own street art and had his first solo show as Mr. Brainwash in 2008. Mr. Brainwash’s artistic evolution is documented in the Banksy-directed and Oscar-nominated film, Exit Through the Gift Shop.
