hile Kentucky is famous for being the home of most bourbon making, we have many, many more products that feature the unique character and flavor of the bluegrass state! Everything from candy, chocolate, racehorse liniment, soaps, furniture, unique stoneware and far more highquality products are produced here.

ourbon has always been one of Kentucky’s best known exports. The recent resurgence in its popularity and a worldwide interest in the making of the world’s finest bourbons has turned the industry into one of the area’s most popular and interesting tourist attractions. The interest and fascination with Bourbon goes far beyond bottled spirits. The recent Bourbon craze has morphed into many bourbon infused and inspired products. Many local craftsmen and women have utilized bourbon itself and various items used in its making, such used bourbon barrels, to create some of the most unique and flavorful condiments, chocolates, home décor and even cooking accessories you’ll ever find. No two bourbons are the same, as you’ll quickly find. Each label handcrafts their own recipe of ingredients and most have been handed down and perfected through several generations of trial, error and success. Many of the area’s best distilleries offer tours of their facilities and each provide an exciting behind the scenes look at how they hand craft their bourbons and why each brand is special in its own adaptation of the basic ingredients that come together to create Bourbon. These tours can be enjoyed while downtown or a short trip to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail is a great way to incorporate your bourbon education into a leisurely visit to Kentucky’s beautiful countryside. Retailers such as Bourbon Barrel Foods, Art Eatables and A Taste of Kentucky offer a vast array of bourbon related products that allow you to enjoy bourbon in many new and unique ways you’d never thought of. The Wine Rack on Frankfort Avenue offers the finest and most compete selection of local Bourbons in the area and the staff is well versed in Bourbon nuances to assist you in picking out the one best for you. Bourbon can now be enjoyed in many forms!

Evan Williams Bourbon Experience
The Proof Is In The Barrel
ne of our area’s most notable products and industries is the manufacturing and distribution of Bourbon. While Bourbon can be made anywhere in the US, it is most commonly associated with Kentucky. It has been estimated that over 90% of all Bourbon produced originates in Kentucky. Only whiskey produced in the United States can carry the name Bourbon. Bourbon was named America’s native spirit by an act of Congress in 1964.
The invention of bourbon is subject to many legendary stories and figures, but is very hard to trace to an original source. Distilling was probably brought to present-day Kentucky in the late 18th century by Scots, Scottish-Irish, and other settlers who began to farm the area in earnest. The spirit they made evolved, and became known as bourbon in the early 19th century due to its historical association with the geographic area known as Old Bourbon (this consisted of the original Bourbon County of Virginia, a region that included much of today’s Eastern Kentucky.) Bourbon made for consumption within the United States must meet these requirements: • Only whiskey produced in the United States can be called bourbon. • Bourbon must be made from a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn. The remainder can be a mixture of wheat, rye and/or malted barley. • Bourbon must be distilled to no more than 160 (U.S.) proof (80% alcohol by volume). Bourbon, like other whiskeys, must be bottled at 80 proof or more (40% alcohol by volume.) • Bourbon must be entered into the barrel for aging at no more than 125 proof (62.5% alcohol by volume). • Bourbon must be aged in new, charred white oak barrels. Bourbon has no minimum specified duration for its aging period, although it must be aged at least briefly. Bourbon labeled as “Straight” bourbon must be aged for at least two years. Fluctuating the percentages of corn, wheat, rye and barley creates the many varieties and flavors found in today’s bourbon. The source of each of these grains and their effect on one another is another part of the formula. Each distillery has their own secret formula and variations to work their magic within these parameters. The formula itself, climate and climate changes as well as barrel storage location will influence the final product, not to mention the length of the barrel aging. All of these factors delicately come together to produce a variety of bourbon flavors. Over the past several years Bourbon’s popularity has outpaced demand and many distillers are working hard to not only deliver more product but also to create and refine new flavors. Jim Beam, has launched a new Single Barrel Bourbon that is their first ever-single barrel offering. Less than 1% of all Jim Beam barrels qualify for this bottling. Each barrel is individually bottled and hand numbered with care to ensure a unique profile and premium quality that make perfectly crafted bourbon.
24
Jim Beam Single Barrel is offered at 95 proof as full bodied with sweet, rich, well-balanced attributes of oak, vanilla and caramel. The aroma has a rich, oaky vanilla background with a light spiciness and a golden amber color. Knob Creek selects the highest-quality rye to create the World’s Best Rye (2016 International Wine and Spirits Competition Gold Outstanding Winner in Rye Category). Knob Creek Straight Rye Whiskey embodies shades of gold to light amber tones and bold spiciness with undertones of vanilla and oak. When drinking Knob Creek Rye you sense notes of herbs and rye with nuances of oak, finishing warm and smooth with spice throughout. Evan Williams Black Label, named after Evan Williams who founded Kentucky’s first commercial distillery along the banks of the Ohio River, is produced with the same time honored method Evan Williams mastered years ago. It is an 86 proof bourbon featuring a medium amber color along with a light nose with deep vanilla and mint. You’ll taste notes of oak, brown sugar and caramel and a medium to long finish. For those so inclined, Evan Williams White Label, their signature 100 proof Bottled-in-Bond bourbon, offers a little more kick. Each year their Master Distillers select barrels that meet their exacting standards. These barrels are used for Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage Bourbon, a five-time Whiskey of the Year award winner. Each bottle is marked with the vintage date it was put into oak, as well as the year it was bottled. With bourbon’s increasing popularity, many local companies such as Bourbon Barrel Foods have come up with very innovative and tasty ways to utilize leftover bourbon barrels. New bourbon-influenced products are being introduced regularly. As you travel throughout the area you will certainly notice the prevalence and availability of more brands of bourbon than anywhere else in the world. Take advantage and sample some of the world’s finest bourbon while you’re here. If you’re looking to take some home with you, no one offers a wider selection of bourbons than The Wine Rack, 2632 Frankfort Ave., (502) 721-9148. n 1999, the Kentucky Distillers’ Association formed the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® tour to give visitors a firsthand look at the art and science of crafting Bourbon, and to educate them about the rich history and proud tradition of their signature spirit. Each of the distilleries that participates in the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® offers its own introduction and insight into its unique way of making bourbon; You’ll find these to be beautiful sprawling properties located literally along the back roads of Kentucky. While many visitors drive the trail, some choose to experience it by bicycle. The tours are very educational and you’ll find it fascinating how each distillery has developed and perfected their own recipe and interpretation of the bourbon formula. Bourbon making is truly and craft handed down by generations and every small variation creates a new flavor. The Kentucky Bourbon Trail® also provides an official passport for visitors. This passport contains maps, listings and descriptions for each of the stops along the way and will assist you in navigating the trail. OFFICIAL TRAILHEADS OF THE KENTUCKY BOURBON TRAIL® participating distilleries can be found in Shepherdsville, Kentucky, approximately 20 miles south of Louisville in Bullitt County, as well as Lebanon, Bardstown, Louisville and Lexington. Member distilleries include: Angel’s Envy, Bulleit Frontier Whiskey, Evan Williams Bourbon Experience, Four Roses Bourbon, Heaven Hill Bourbon Heritage Center, Jim Beam, Maker’s Mark, Town Branch Bourbon, Wild Turkey and Woodford Reserve Distillery. The 2019 race on May 4th will be the 145th consecutive running! American Pharoah began his won of the Triple Crown here in 2015. Both horses were trained by legendary trainer Bob Baffert. For those of you who like to bet on jockeys, Justify was ridden by Mike Smith and American Pharaoh was ridden in most of his races by Victor Espinoza. The Kentucky Derby is often referred to as the “Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” and as the “Run for the Roses” signifying the famous blanket of roses draped over the winning horse. Kentucky Derby Museum: Barn & Backside Tour by Joey Yazell
W
hen the topic of Kentucky finds its way into a conversation, one of the first things that comes up is usually the Kentucky Derby. Known as the “Greatest Two Minutes in Sports,” this title comes with plenty of fascinating history that extends far deeper than what most of us are familiar with; the Mint Juleps, My Old Kentucky Home, and a lively infield. But what many of us don’t know is what goes on on the backside of the track at Churchill Downs when live racing is underway during meets throughout the year. Fortunately, visitors can get a true behind-the-scenes racing experience, thanks to the Kentucky Derby Museum, which offers a variety of van and walking tours that showcase the various layers of activities that come together to provide the total racing experience at Churchill Downs. I recently went on the Kentucky Derby Museum’s Barn and Backside Van Tour at Churchill Downs Racetrack, which gives you a first-hand look into the world of Thoroughbred racing. Here, you’ll discover the unique character and life force of racing at Churchill Downs, get a feel for all of the inner workings of everyday life and - of course - Kentucky Derby Day. You may even get a glimpse of Thoroughbreds training on the track during your tour.
Each Barn and Backside van tour is hosted by highly knowledgeable guides that are both funny and insightful. The route takes you underneath and all around the legendary
36
track and also to the backside. You’ll learn all kinds of interesting facts along the way. For example, did you know that the track goes down 25 feet below the racing surface? The Historic Walking Tour, part of your Museum general admission experience, takes you to the Paddock, giving you amazing views of the famous Twin Spires, and out to see views of the historic racetrack. The guides on the walking tour are lots of fun and are happy to answer any and all questions you might have. After absorbing the tours of Churchill Downs, you can try your luck jockeying for first place on a race simulator, or place some bets on races from back in the day in the Kentucky Derby Museum. But most importantly, be sure to check out the signature exhibit, “The Greatest Race.” This 360-degree movie about the life of a Derby horse will send chills down your spine. The 18-minute movie is in one of the only 360 degree 4k ultra HD theatres in the world at the Kentucky Derby Museum. After the movie, you can also browse a variety of interactive exhibits, including changing temporary exhibits, on both floors of the Museum that provide additional insight into what makes Thoroughbred racing such a fascinating sport. Experiencing the Barn and Backside Van Tour at Churchill Downs and the Historic Walking Tour, both offered by the Kentucky Derby Museum, gives participants a real appreciation for the Kentucky Derby, the Churchill Downs Racetrack and its deep history. Focus On The Fillies
S
ince 1875 the 1-1/8-mile Kentucky Oaks stakes race has been held each year at Churchill Downs on the Friday before the Kentucky Derby, which is always held the first Saturday in May. Unlike the Derby, entry in the Kentucky Oaks is reserved exclusively for the world’s top 14 three-year-old Thoroughbred fillies with the highest earnings. This field of fillies races for an impressive $1 million guaranteed purse to the delight of record crowds of more than 100,000 spectators each year and the event consistently ranks among the most popular horse races in the world. The number of attendees at The Oaks typically surpasses the attendance of all other stakes races except the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, often topping even the Belmont and the Breeders’ Cup. Traditionally, The Oaks has always been a held a special place in the hearts of locals, who come out in large numbers to attend the race, and many local schools are closed that day for an “administrative holiday.” Often called the “Race for the Lilies,” the stargazer lily is the official flower of the Kentucky Oaks, making pink the preferred color in both men’s and women’s fashion. The color pink is also part of the track’s “Think Pink” initiative, which is part of an ongoing partnership with cancer fighting charities like Bright Pink and Horses and Hope. In fact, Churchill Downs has been actively involved in the battle against breast cancer since 2009 and is pleased to be part of such a major fund raising program in support of prevention and early detection of these diseases. As on Derby Day, spectators come out to the track for the Oaks to enjoy the festivities wearing their finest
38
attire and most elaborate fancy hats. Festivities always start on Oaks Day with a parade, a fashion show, a highly entertaining Hat Parade and - of course - a mint julep or two! Despite the growing number of visitors from out of state who come to the Kentucky Oaks and the Derby each year, the Oaks has always been considered a local event among Louisvillians. Millionaires Row is another exciting part of The Oaks, so be sure to keep an eye out for the many celebrities who come to town each year for this special day. Of course, the infield crows are always entertaining to watch - either up close or from the stands - and numerous musical attractions, games, food and other vendors are located throughout the grounds and infield. Potential entries for this Grade 1 stakes race are selected based on the results of more than 70 graded stakes races held worldwide over a 10-month period. Fillies are permitted to enter the Derby instead should they qualify, but must earn their way to the field just like the colts and geldings. This careful selection process is part of what makes the Kentucky Oaks such an essential part of the most exciting weekend in horse racing and a true “don’t miss” event for anyone planning a visit to Louisville, Kentucky.

Doing Derby in Style
s you know by now, the Kentucky Derby is much more than just a two-minute Thoroughbred race! It is a significant cultural event that brings fans from all over the world and from all walks of life.
Throughout the grandstands you’ll find attendees dressed to the nines just for this special day! Derby hats are a favorite site on Oaks and Derby Day and they come in an unbelievable array of sizes, shapes arrangements and colors. The sky is the limit and no design is too over the top. To match the Derby hats, men and women alike utilize their best fashion skills! Some outfits are formal, some are entertaining but all are unique and attention getting. You’ll find as many fabulous photos in the press of our dressed up race fans as you will of the Thoroughbreds running in the race on the days following the Derby and Oaks. In an attempt to assist those interested in stepping up their Derby appearances, raise money for charity and have a tremendous amount of fun, Rodes hosts the annual Derby Divas, a night of shopping fun and friendship every April at their Brownsboro Rd. location. The annual event benefits the Norton Cancer Institute Breast Health Program and supports the cost of mammograms for undeserved women in the Louisville area. Along with high fashion, food and refreshments, the event has featured internationally famous hat makers and speakers. It’s never too early for start planning to your next Derby! lacing a bet on a particular horse during any race certainly makes the event more exciting and you become much more involved. Everyone from the beginner to the most experienced have their ways of deciding who they think might take the race. While the more experienced players have formulas and ways of selecting a winner, many fans have fun choosing their horse by the color of silks, favorite jockey, color of the horse and, of course, by name. It sometimes seems the youngest children have the best luck! Maybe their thinking is less complicated? Below is a list of horse betting basics to introduce you to the concept or remind you of a few key items to remember. WIN- You’re betting that your horse will come in first place. If your horse finishes in first, you get to collect. PLACE- When you bet on your horse to “place,” you’re betting that he will come in first OR second. If your horse finishes in first or second, you get to collect. Payout for a place bet is less than a win wager, but you do have the security of being able to cash in if your horse finishes in the top two spots. SHOW- You’re betting that your horse will come in first, second, OR third. Since you’re hedging your bets, you have a higher chance of winning, but the payout for a show bet is substantially less than a win or place wager.
THECITIVIEW.COM
WIN/PLACE, PLACE/SHOW- Similar to an acrossthe-board bet in that you’re making multiple straight wagers in a single bet. In a win/place bet, you’re betting your horse to win AND place. If he wins, you collect both the win and place money. If he finishes second, you collect just the place money. In a place/show bet, you’re betting that your horse will place and show. If your horse finishes second, you collect the place and show money; if he finishes third, you just get the show money. Because you’re placing multiple wagers on your horse in a single bet, a win/place and place/show is more expensive. A $2 win/place bet will cost you $4 because you’re betting $2 that your horse wins and $2 that your horse places. There are numerous “exotic” bets that can be made, as well, including an Across the Board, Exacta, Quinella, Trifecta and Superfecta, among others. For more details on making more sophisticated bets, the following website is a great resource: www.churchilldowns.com

The Art of Cuisine
L
ouisville is known for its diverse dining options. Internationally and nationally-trained chefs flock to Louisville to practice what they’ve learned in the kitchen, often translating their visions into their own eateries. These entrepreneurial chefs have established boutique restaurants throughout the city, and many are part of the movement to use seasonal, locally-grown produce, poultry and meats.
Fork & Barrel
National Geographic, Zagat, Travel + Leisure and members of the International Association of Culinary Professionals have all ranked Louisville as one of the toprated foodie destinations in the world. Ethnic fare abounds from Thai, Greek, Vietnamese, Cuban and Indian to the more standard Italian, Chinese, French, German and Mexican. The authentic flavors of dozens of countries are available. If the view out the window is as important as the food on the table, choose from the more than a dozen restaurants on both banks of the river with a view of the Louisville skyline or the Indiana shore. Stay downtown, head up or downstream of the city, enjoy fine dining or picnic fare, and find restaurants with a great view of the mighty Ohio. Why limit yourself to one style of cuisine when there are over 2,500 restaurants available? From country cooking served family style to haute cuisine, formal courses to alfresco finger food, downtown to uptown — Louisville’s got it!

ouisville has gained a national reputation as one of the best foodie destinations in the country. Nearly any list of foodie destinations will mention Louisville as a must-do! National Geographic, Zagat, Travel + Leisure and members of the International Association of Culinary Professionals have all ranked Louisville as one of the top-rated foodie destinations in the world. With the huge number of great dining options throughout the area, competition is at a very high level bringing out the best in everyone. The vast array of cuisines, dining settings and culinary influences come together to form one of the country’s most diverse and exciting dining scenes. To provide some perspective on how and why Louisville has become the dining destination it has, we talked to several area chefs and restaurant owners to relate their experience for our hotel guests. When it comes to a love of cooking, most of our chefs indicated they had experience early in life that made them appreciate the art of a good meal. Chef Eric Shaw of Jack Fry’s was introduced to the joy of cooking by his mother and grandmother who were both excellent cooks. Chef Matt Weber, of Uptown Cafe, began as a photography student at the University of Louisville but soon discovered his love of cooking while working at Cafe Metro, a local favorite, which was right across the street from his current gig at Uptown Cafe. Chef Geoffrey Heyde, of Fork & Barrel, grew up helping his mother put together meals for his family and developed a love for food and cooking. Chef Zac Young of Marketplace Restaurant at Theater Square also grew up cooking with his mother and still cooks with her for holiday events. Carter Gross, of Wild Rita’s, developed his love of cooking through his travels and experiencing different cultures and then realizing the power that cooking and food has to bring people together.

Chef Steve Gustafson, who began his tenure at the new Omni Louisville Downtown Hotel in March 2018, mentioned he enjoyed family meals together, which they shared no matter how busy everyone was at the time. Volare’s Joshua Moore was introduced to cooking by both of his grandmothers and was known to change the channel from cartoons to cooking shows as early as Kindergarten! Louisville might not be the first city that comes to mind when considering a restaurant venture. However, Louisville has attracted some of the best! The many local chefs held in such high regard have helped to attract new restaurateurs. Chef Andrew Hubbard of Martini Italian Bistro came back home at his mother’s request and ended up getting married and starting a family. One of the things we found common amongst the chefs we spoke with was their desire to express themselves in an artful fashion. Josh Moore loves to express his creativity and to see the excitement from a guest when they sample a dish. Steve Gustafson added the “endless possibilities” that cooking food and bringing people together offer. Creating is also huge for Zac Young and he enjoys coming up with fun new dishes and making those at the table happy!

Drinks on FIRE!!!
t is difficult to track down the exact beginnings of the Margarita cocktail. There are several stories…all completely different…connecting the Margarita to its Mexican origins. Legends do point to it being originated in the late 1930’s and Jose Cuervo was known to have run the first advertisement for the Margarita in 1945. The basic Margarita ingredients consist of: Tequila, Triple Sec and Lime Juice served in a salt-rimmed glass. Variations of this theme along with the use of various qualities of liquor can impact the flavor and consistency of the Margarita …for better or worse. We all have our favorite recipe and/or watering hole to enjoy these delicious concoctions. For a new and very bold twist on this traditional drink, Wild Rita’s has gone the extra mile in creating their signature “Wild Rita.” The one and only Wild Rita is made “au natural” with 100% Agave, Jose Cuervo Traditional Silver Tequila, Grand Marnier, freshly squeezed lime juice and natural agave. (No syrup used here!) To make it even bolder and over the top, the Wild Rita is set on fire at the table as you’re being served. Certainly unforgettable and it tastes even better than it sounds…or looks! In keeping with the big and bold theme, Wild Rita’s dining room features Chihuly inspired bright colored blown glass made locally by Flame Run Glass Studio and Gallery as well as brightly decorated tables, chairs and walls. This Over the Top modern Mexican and tequila bar is home to a special and exclusive Margarita menu including 7 House Specialty Margaritas. If you prefer your Tequila straight up, Wild Rita’s is home to Louisville’s most extensive and complete list of Mexican Tequilas as well as Cervezas and Cerveza Cocktails. A traditional Mexican menu with many modern twists compliments the Tequila and drink menus. A visit to Wild Rita’s is guaranteed to enlighten and broaden your Mexican dining horizon. Louisville Mega Cavern Underground Zip-Line Course
H
by Kirsten Silven
oused in a former limestone quarry, the 100-acre Mega Cavern in Louisville is home to the world’s first underground zip-line course, offering adventure-seekers a spectacular and truly unique experience. Although it’s not a natural cave system, the Mega Cavern is nothing short of breathtaking, with towering columns of sheer rock to support the massive underground space, which lies beneath 10 lanes of the Waterson Expressway (I-264) and parts of the Louisville Zoo! Entering the Mega Cavern is a breeze and some tours are handicap accessible. Once inside, the average temperature is 58-60 degrees year-round, so be sure to dress appropriately - especially if you get cold easily! Closetoed shoes are required for most tours and it’s a good idea to have pockets that zip if you want to bring a cell phone or camera along to document the journey. Full-service restrooms are available in the gift shop check-in area, and lockers are also available to rent. There are a variety of activities to choose from at the Mega Cavern, including an underground BMX & MTB bike park, a seated historical tram tour, and ropes challenge course, but the Mega Zips experience is among the most popular, as thousands of fabulous Tripadvisor reviews will attest! The whole experience takes about 2 ½ hours to complete, depending on the number of participants, and the tour ranges upward from the cavern floor to 10 stories high. Before practicing on a beginner-level zip, experienced guides will help suit you up with a harness, safety lamp and helmet. They will also cover a variety of basic safety measures, putting everyone at ease with lighthearted banter and an obvious passion for the job at hand. After the practice run, it’s on to the main attraction! Guaranteed to get your heart racing and adrenaline pumping, the zip-line tour features six totally unique underground zip lines and two suspension bridges, offering

plenty of opportunities to test your balance, skill and courage! The interplay of light and shadow on the colossal cavern walls is mesmerizing to behold as you fly from one platform to the next; an easy feat thanks to the expert help of the tour guides, who handle the braking, inspect and connect the gear and take every precaution to ensure the safety of all visitors. The longest line stretches an incredible 900 feet over the deep underground chasms and bridges, propelling you to speeds of up to 45 miles per hour. Other highlights of the tour included jumping off a 70-foot high platform and a dual/parallel racing zip finale that allows you to race another person to the finish line. Situated just five miles from the Louisville Airport and 15 minutes from downtown, the Mega Cavern is the perfect activity for travelers who want to see more of Louisville that typically meets the eye! Open year round with tours available rain or shine, it’s a good idea to reserve a spot in advance, since tours tend to fill up quickly. Don’t miss this extraordinary opportunity for adventure! Our much-loved Forecastle Festival, an annual nauticalthemed weekend of music, art, and sustainability, features some of the best local talent and local food the Derby City has to offer. It is also a one of the premier music festivals in the world. Up and coming bands play alongside established and classic artists during three days of non-stop music. Headliners of previous festivals have included Chris Stapleton and My Morning Jacket while artists as diverse as Robert Plant and the most popular hip hop artists have also played the notorious festival. Everyone in attendance at the annual Forecastle Festival enjoys great views of downtown Louisville and the Ohio River alongside killer lineups. “The food and people watching is something I always look forward to, but most definitely the local artists is something you certainly don’t want to miss,” said a native Kentuckian who came to Louisville to attend Forecastle from Lexington. “I’ve come to Forecastle for the last three years and I love it! I really enjoy the urban setting of this festival and all the bands they have play. Louisville is a great city and has a lot to offer, and the annual Forecastle Festival is one of those many great things.” For more information visit forecastlefest.com
